Practice (UPDATED)
Randy Thomas was in jeans and crocs during practice, obviously not participating, and it looks like a real longshot he will play this week. Stephon Heyer was at first-string right tackle - Todd Wade (knee) is back at practice - so that's shaping up as Heyer/Fabini vs. Strahan on the right side. Make of that what you will. (Gibbs said Heyer will start this weekend).
James Thrash (high ankle sprain) was back at practice for the first time in a month. Shawn Springs (back) was practicing, too. Coach Joe seemed upbeat about Thrash's chances of playing.
Other than Thomas and Jason Campbell, DE Phillip Daniels (knee) and CB John Eubanks (toe infection) were the only other guys out. Gibbs said Daniels is not expected to miss action this weekend.

Geeze, why is RT in Crocs? It's just as troubling that he is wearing those as it is that he cant play this week. But seriously, whats the deal with this guy, goes in for 5 mins then thats it for probably the rest of the year?

If a spare part CB gets injured in the forest, does anyone hear him? Does anyone care??

You know if you guys need a 'shutdown' corner at the moment, you could probably pick up Jason David from the Saints for 50c and a (lightly used) t-shirt right now.
Posted by: toddcoat | December 12, 2007 2:54 PM
Question: Is it Jason David that does the "Mmmmmm Toasty!" voiceover for Quiznos?
Posted by: toddcoat | December 12, 2007 2:55 PM
Is Deion Sanders still cashing checks from Dan Snyder? Mark Carrier? How's Darrell Green running the 40 these days? Any chance we can trade Clinton for Champ? It would be nice to have a dependable corner. What up with LBW?

I'm not worried about Eubanks. With the predicted weather for Sunday night, nobody on the field (or in the stands, for that matter) will be able feel his toes. So that should take care of the pain.
For the Redskins, anyway.
Because all the peeps know Todd is gonna bring the pain to the Midgets.

Jason, why can't you admit that Heyer has been more than solid this season? Although he is not dominating nor mauling opponents he has been able to hold up on his own.
I have not seen the kid allow many sacks and would take him over Wade ANY DAY OF THE WEEK, and twice on Sundays. Ever since you bashed him in the preseason (when he did not allow a sack) you do not give him any credit, or props to a guy who was UNDRAFTED and is doing a damn good job (even guys drafted in the 1st day are doing worse than him).
BTW, I think he should be an integral part of our future in the O-line.

Too bad about Thomas. Maybe he pushed his return too much. DBs should include Doughty. Springs and Smoot are CBs and are good matchups for Giants WR's.
Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 12, 2007 3:35 PM
I think the wind at Giants stadium on Sunday night will be a better option at CB than John Eubanks.

Top seed SMACK (13-1 record) faces wild card winner Stumped (8-6).
Division winners Zebra (9-5) and kost52 (8-6) duke it out in the other semifinal matchup.
Trivia: The only team to beat SMACK this season?
You guessed it: He Nate Me, all the way back in Week 1.

Heyer, rookie requiring help vs Strahan, headed for HOF. Sounds like a mismatch to me.
Skins offense will rely on short, spread passing game. Its the perfect fit for Saunders. Running isn't working and it takes too long to go deep vs Giants pass rush. I'm guessing Giants don't blitz much this week since their d-line is effective.
Fortunately, Giants offense is nothing special.
Have Giants clinched? Because after this, they play in Buffalo and vs Pats. No easy wins in this group.
Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 12, 2007 3:44 PM
it's only Wednesday. If Daniels and Eubanks both practice on Friday, I would not be too concerned. As far as Thomas goes, it was going to be an amazing feat to come back from such an injury. You really can't work on regaining a range of motion in your until the the triceps is completely healed. My guess is that although he maybe medically cleared to play, the arm isn't in good enough shape to be effective.
Posted by: straub21 | December 12, 2007 3:44 PM

zcezcest1,
Giants have not clinched anything as of yet. If they lose their final three games, it is possible that they do not make the playoffs. If they beat the Skins this weekend, then they have clinched a wildcard but seeding would still be up for grabs unless Minnesota loses to Chicago.

I'm also guessing Skins don't use nickel as much. Smoot, Springs, Doughty and Landry are the DBs.
For the nickel, which LB are you going to take out, Fletcher, Washington or McIntosh? And more importantly, who are you going to put in? Torrence, Eubanks, Macklin? Too much drop off in talent to do that often.
In passing downs, expect the Skins to blitz instead. Eli does throw INTs and its not like the Giants receivers can run away from people. Plus, their backs are not especially good receivers

Posted by: dfly24 | December 12, 2007 03:36 PM
I know that's a joke, but I was thinking the same thing. If it's snowy and windy, I don't think we'll be seeing a lot of deep passes. (My expert analysis, because I'm so friggin' brilliant.)
If it were just snowy but not windy, I'd be more concerned. I don't remember who the teams were at this point, but there was a college game on New Year's Eve several years back, I think it was 2001 (the real start of the millennium), and it was snowing pretty heavily at the game. You'd think it would've been a low-scoring affair, but both teams were throwing deep and scoring like crazy, because the WRs were just running fly and post patterns, and the DBs couldn't make their cuts well enough to keep up, due to the poor footing. But I don't recall it being very windy in that game.
If TC can hit guys in stride on short patterns, those could produce some big gains. 'Course, we could be susceptible to the same thing.

thx Straub. Can we pass the NYG if we win out and they lose out?
Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 12, 2007 4:04 PM
kost52,
Grilliams isn't on the list because of his salary (already more than a lot of head coaches and teams will balk at outbidding the Skins) and because the contract term that requires the team to pay him $1 million if he's not the next head coach has a lot of other teams thinking he is a lock here.
If they thought he was available other teams would snatch him up.

Lets assume the Skins win all 3 games. The Giants could be at risk. They'd lose to us on Sunday to go 9-5. Then they'd play Buffalo, in Buffalo. With Buffalo still in the hunt (that has to be politically incorrect at some level), that would be a tough game. 9-6. And the finale is NE. 9-7. Skins win out and they are 9-7 and looks like they win the tie break based on record in common games. Either Minn, AZ or NO could also get to 9-7. NYG loses to Minn based on their head to head. Not sure how NO or AZ would impact things.
Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 12, 2007 4:24 PM
zcezcest1,
Speaking of impacting things, another thing to consider is the impact of that scenario on Mrs. Manning's Christmas letter.
"In sadder news, our other son continues to be a disappointment."
Posted by: freakzilla | December 12, 2007 4:30 PM
Both AZ and NO can not finish at 9-7 as they play each other this weekend. I think that is correct...(this could also be a double post as I encountered some technical difficulties with the WaPo site, sorry in advance)

zcezcest1, jspaceman, and all others like me who believe that Giants still have the potential to implode and have a three game losing streak. Take a look at the link I have above to the NFL tiebreaking rules. Like it has been mentioned, some other teams could be tied with us at 9-7 which makes it even more interesting. It may come down to record in common games played as that is ranked one above the conference record which somewhat surprises me as I would have though it would be the reverse. Assuming Skins win out and Giants lose out, both teams will be 9-7, 3-3 in the division, and 7-5 in NFC games.
There are only two games that are not common games. For the Skins, we lose credit for the win against Arizona and the loss against Tampa Bay. The Giants lose credit for their wins against Atlanta and San Francisco. And what does this mean? The Giants would have a record of 7-7 in common games and the Skins would have a record of 8-6. So gentlemen, if that scenario rises, we would beat out the "New York Football Not So Giants".

PLEASE!!! This is taking it to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. Lets just focus on trying to win this next game with an inept offensive line matching up against two ferocious sacking machines and our back-up QB pulling off the same amazing feat as last week despite no help from our absentee ground game!
When our team finally shows up (its been since Week 6)then we can have the confidence and ability to look at potentially winning the division! Until then lets just focus on winning one game at a time!

Quick slants. Look no further than Tom Brady's and Wes Welker's humiliation-inducing drive against the Steelers. The Todd can fire it off that quick, right? He has a good sense of timing, right?
There is not a snowball's chance in hell that the Giants are going to beat the Pats. They'll be 15-0 and you don't think they want to go undefeated? I can see the chip on Hoody's shoulder from here in Florida.

Posted by: Soup17 | December 12, 2007 04:40 PM
Um, maybe because he could be playing as soon as this Sunday? Or if not, the following Sunday? Or Maybe because what we would gain very little in signing another player at this point in the season? or maybe because we have a decent shot at making the playoffs and realize we need Thomas if we're going to try to win a game or 2 in the playoffs?
A better question would've been "Why in the world would we put Thomas on IR at this point??????"

"... Other than Thomas and Jason Campbell, DE Phillip Daniels (knee) and CB John Eubanks (toe infection) were the only other guys out. ..." - Jasno
First off (and I'm not making this up just b/c I've been pro-Barno today), I've been pro-Eubanks since he was a free agent signing at the very end of last season. His college career has some REALLY GOOD return yardage on special teams. I have no idea why they did not put him in for ARE instead of McCardell.
That said, hasn't the advent of modern medicine yielded various forms of salves, ointments, balms, or unguents to cure an "infection"? [I hope this isn't the dreaded toe fungus. Lamisil is not safe for women who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant.]
Posted by: dcsween | December 12, 2007 5:13 PM
Hey Barno,
When Thomas isn't able to play another full game this season...I'm sure our decision to leave him off of IR will look great!
We can't be looking down the road when the end of our season is in our face! Its the here and now that is important!

"While at Southern Mississippi, he set the all-time Conference USA kickoff return average record at 26.4 yards return...Also ranks second all-time on the career yards per return list with 2,321 yards and tied for second in kickoff return touchdowns with two ... Ranks first all-time on Southern Mississippi's career kickoff returns list with 88 ... Just a follow up to the last lengthy post. If another team is involved in the tie then can change/complicate things if New Orleans is there. We would have head to head tiebreakers against Detroit, Arizona, Minnesota. The common games with New Orleans is not as clear to me as NO played TB twice and we played Philly twice but they are both common opponents.

I did not. I registered this name quite a while ago for leaving comments on articles on the main WaPo site. I read RI off and on for quite a while but don't think I ever posted. Started living on the blog and posting when the news broke about Sean.
I'm also over on ES under a different name. (I'm the poster from Olympia who isn't a mod.)

Common opponents won't matter, saints blow us away with nfc record

Soup17,
I agree with you about focusing on this weekend. However, someone asked me a question and I just wanted to oblige and give an answer.

Do the Giants have any injury issues?

I read that Eli has a yeast thing in her girl parts.

dbowen11,
See the link I had in the post earlier to NFL tiebreaker rules. Record in common games is ahead of record in NFC games.

Dear Eli,
We hope your crotch feels better. Please throw us six interceptions this weekend.
Thanks!

dbowen11,
Chnaged my tune. I was looking at divisional rules which applied when talking about Giants. You are correct in that a tie with New Orleans we would lose as they value NFC record over common games. However if Minnesota were to tank as well as NYG, then they would be 7-9 and the Skins would take the #6 seed. Too many scenarios at this point. Need to focus on what we need to win against the Giants.

fersaltiel, I don't remember JLaC ever pooping on Heyer in the preseason, other than to note that he was an undrafted rookie. There was some hubbub about when Campbell hurt his knee and finger pointing in the whodunnit btwn Heyer and Pucillo (who was being tried out after Wade failed to be able to make the switch to guard). Most of that hubbub was based on one thread, and pretty quickly dropped after Bugel came to the youngster's defense (which was interpreted to mean that it was either Pucillo's fault or that Buges was going to keep his laundry in house thank you very much). Apropos of nothing, here is the blog from the first day when Heyer was inserted to replace Samuels at practice during the week (much to everyone's surprise ... people were expecting Fabini). http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/2007/07/report_from_the_field.html

Posted by: whiteben | December 12, 2007 5:57 PM
No sweat. I'm not worried about the saints. If we go 9-7 we're in.
Todd Collins takes us to the playoffs, and more. He's the superbowl mvp, and not only is Gibbs legacy not tarnished, it's taken to an alltime high.
I can drean can't I?

Soup17, I think the Sporting News link you gave us is pretty decent analysis. Skins do need to deal with Giants pass rush and the best way is thru quick passes. But not sure the Giants have to fear Portis as much as the article suggested.
As for the Giants, balanced offense is important for them. They are down one RB, but they are deep there, so its not as big a hit. Their WRs are not as strong, especially with Burress hurting, but our DBs miss Rogers some and #21 in a big way.
For us on defense, its slow the run and stop the pass. On offense, its nickel and dime them with the short stuff and hope ARE or Santana have big plays in them.

I still say Arizona takes care of business in Nawlins on Sunday and the Saints become the Ain'ts.
Let's just handle our business on Sunday night. Considering the forecast, maybe we could free up some roster space for this guy:

dbowen,
I agree with you now that I look again. If Giants tank and we win out and NO wins out, NO is 5 seed and we are 6 seed. Minnesota would have 6-6 in NFC record if they only lose to us and win their other two games. Can Chicago help us out on Monday night with Orton at the helm? I thought Griese had a pretty decent game after replacing Rex. He threw for almost 300 yards. Ok this is my last post related to other teams. In Todd we trust(and PRAY)!!!

Just thought I would drop one of many to come mock draft boards. I know folks like talent speculator consider this blasphemous to even be talking about the draft at this point, but I can't help myself. This one is from Yahoo Sports:
1. Miami (0-13)
The Pick: Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
The Buzz: The Dolphins are a wreck, and the team obviously has holes everywhere. Dorsey is a dominant inside force.
2. New England (from San Francisco (3-10))
The Pick: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas*
The Buzz: Patriots strike it rich and get the premier feature back and best player in this class.
3. St. Louis (3-10)
The Pick: Chris Long, DE, Virginia
The Buzz: The Rams defense must improve along the front four.
4. NY Jets (3-10)
The Pick: James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State*
The Buzz: The Jets are looking for another impact defender for their front seven.
5. Atlanta (3-9)
The Pick: Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
The Buzz: The Falcons are a total disaster this season and the quarterback spot is their highest priority.
6. Oakland (4-9)
The Pick: Jake Long, OT, Michigan
The Buzz: The Raiders are in the top 10 again and must protect franchise QB JaMarcus Russell.
7. Kansas City (4-9)
The Pick: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss*
The Buzz: The Chiefs' line must improve for this offense to return to the upper echelon in the league.
8. Baltimore (4-9)
The Pick: Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona
The Buzz: The Ravens defense needs younger talent on the corner, and Cason is a top-flight cover man.
9. Cincinnati (5-8)
The Pick: Steve Slaton, RB, West Virginia*
The Buzz: The Bengals are looking for an impact playmaker out of the backfield for this offense.
10. Carolina (5-8)
The Pick: Dan Connor, LB, Penn State
The Buzz: The Panthers are looking to solidify their struggling defense.
11. Chicago (5-8)
The Pick: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
The Buzz: The Bears will jump at a chance for a future leader on offense.
12. Philadelphia (5-8)
The Pick: Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma*
The Buzz: The Eagles are looking to stretch the field with a blue-chip receiver.
13. Arizona (6-7)
The Pick: Sedrick Ellis, DT, Southern Cal
The Buzz: The Cardinals defense gives up too many big plays and needs a leader and anchor in the middle.
14. Houston (6-7)
The Pick: Kenny Phillips, FS, Miami*
The Buzz: The Texans are looking to continue to build a playoff-caliber defense, especially in the secondary.
15. Denver (6-7)
The Pick: Early Doucet, WR, LSU
The Buzz: Mike Shanahan wants more playmakers to help Jay Cutler develop.
16. Washington (6-7)
The Pick: Calais Campbell, DE, Miami
The Buzz: Joe Gibbs wants a big-time pass rusher for the Redskins' front four.
17. Detroit (6-7)
The Pick: Andre' Woodson, QB, Kentucky
The Buzz: The Lions are in search of a future leader on offense and may take a chance on Woodson.

Another Early Mock Draft, McShay from ESPN -
NFL Mock Draft
1. Miami Dolphins
Current record: 0-12
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OT, OG, DT
Projected pick: Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
One of the Dolphins' top priorities is to upgrade the talent level along the offensive and defensive lines with an injection of youth. Dorsey played most of the second half of the season with a minor knee injury and a back injury and was still the most disruptive defensive tackle in the country. He should be ready to contribute immediately in the NFL.
2. New England Patriots (from 3-9 San Francisco)
Current record: 12-0
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: ILB, CB, OLB
Projected pick: Darren McFadden*, RB, Arkansas
This hardly seems fair. The league's best team lands the draft's top talent -- or strikes another lucrative draft-day deal for him. Both McFadden and Laurence Maroney split carries in college. A two-back rotation would make both last longer, not to mention the possibilities for an offense already overloaded with talent.
3. New York Jets
Current record: 3-9
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: WR, NT, ILB
Projected pick: James Laurinaitis*, ILB, Ohio State
There simply is not a wide receiver to get excited about with the third overall pick and USC DT Sedrick Ellis is not a good fit as a two-gap NT in this scheme. McFadden should be the pick, if he falls to the Jets, but in this scenario, Laurinaitis makes the most sense. He would solidify the linebacker corps next to another young talent in David Harris (2nd round pick in '07). Michigan OT Jake Long is a possibility, as well.
4. Atlanta Falcons
Current record: 3-9
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: QB, OL, DT
Projected pick: Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
It almost makes too much sense. The Falcons, in desperate need of a franchise quarterback in the wake of the Michael Vick mess, use their first-round selection on a signal-caller who played for current Atlanta head coach Bobby Petrino at Louisville from 2004-06.
5. St. Louis Rams
Current record: 3-9
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OT, CB, DE
Projected pick: Jake Long, OT, Michigan
The season-ending injury to perennial Pro Bowl tackle Orlando Pace and the Rams' overall poor play along the offensive line this season make Long a real possibility with this pick. He is unquestionably the most dominant offensive-line prospect in the 2008 class.
6. Cincinnati Bengals
Current record: 4-8
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: DT, LB, OT
Projected pick: Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC
It would be tough to pass on DE Chris Long, but the Bengals have a much bigger need for interior help. Ellis is a quick, tough and relentless defensive tackle. He has the potential to disrupt plays in the backfield while occupying blocks, which would make the Bengals' entire front-seven better.
7. Oakland Raiders
Current record: 4-8
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OL, WR, DL
Projected pick: Chris Long, DE, Virginia
Outside of McFadden, there isn't a player I value more in the 2008 class than Chris Long. He plays the game with rare passion and nearly flawless technique. In addition to controlling blockers as a 3-4 end in college, Long also disengages from blocks and makes big play after big play. The fact that he finished the regular season with 14 sacks playing in that scheme tells you all you need to know about his talent and motor. Raider Nation would certainly welcome another Long with open arms.
8. Kansas City Chiefs
Current record: 4-8
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OL, WR, CB
Projected pick: Ryan Clady*, OT, Boise State
Clady only makes sense here if Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle makes strides during the final few weeks of the season. If not, QB Matt Ryan would have to be a possibility with this pick. Clady is still improving his strength but he possesses impressive feet to go along with his enormous wingspan.
9. Baltimore Ravens
Current record: 4-8
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: QB, CB, LB
Projected pick: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
Ryan is the top quarterback prospect in the 2008 class. In this scenario, the Ravens would send a thank-you letter to the Falcons and gladly take Ryan with the ninth overall selection.
10. New Orleans Saints
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: MLB, TE, DT
Projected pick: Keith Rivers, LB, USC
This is a bit high for Rivers, but the Saints need linebacker help and could fall in love with his leadership and tempo. Rivers could possibly play inside in the NFL, but his more natural fit is on the weakside. Regardless, he is a first-round talent with very good instincts, quickness and tackling skills.
11. Houston Texans
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: DB, OG, RB
Projected pick: Malcolm Jenkins*, DB, Ohio State
Jenkins spends most of his time in soft-zone coverage at both corner and safety at Ohio State. It's unlikely he will ever emerge as a shutdown man-to-man cover corner in the NFL, but Jenkins is a ball hawk with excellent size and straight-line speed. His versatility could help solidify the Texans' secondary.
12. Denver Broncos
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OL, DT, S
Projected pick: Kenny Phillips*, S, Miami (Fla.)
Phillips had a substandard season, and it would say a lot about his character if he returns to Miami for his senior season and take on a leadership role. On the flip side, Phillips is likely to be the top safety selected if he bolts school early for the 2008 draft. Denver is aging at the position, making it one of Phillips' potential first-round landing spots. His speed and athleticism would be a good complement to the Broncos' existing group of comparatively slow-footed tough guys.
13. Carolina Panthers
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: QB, WR, DE
Projected pick: Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky
Woodson has the size, arm strength and accuracy as a passer to develop into a good starter in the NFL. Some teams will be concerned about his occasional lapses in decision-making and lack of mobility. However, I would consider the Panthers fortunate if Woodson drops to them at No. 13 overall. In this scenario, Woodson would be the third and final quarterback off the board in the first round, leaving the Bears to adjust their plans quickly.
14. Chicago Bears
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: QB, OT, S
Projected pick: Mike Jenkins, DB, South Florida
If the team can't get one of the top three quarterbacks, it likely will look for help along the offensive line and at safety. Jenkins plays mostly corner at South Florida but he may be a better fit at free safety in the NFL. Regardless, Jenkins has excellent speed and ball skills for his size. He has shown much better discipline and technique as a senior, which is why he is shooting up many NFL draft boards.
15. Philadelphia Eagles
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OT, S, WR
Projected pick: DeSean Jackson*, WR, Cal
Sam Baker would be a possibility, but will the Eagles really take another USC tackle considering Winston Justice's struggles thus far? From my vantage point, Jackson would be tough to pass on here if he leaves following a disappointing junior season at Cal. Sure, critics will attack Jackson for being lean and struggling to stay healthy. But none of his injuries project to have long-term ramifications. Plus, he's a better pure wide receiver than Ted Ginn Jr. (picked by Miami No. 10 overall in 2007) and Jackson is just as explosive in the return game.
16. Washington Redskins
Current record: 5-7
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: WR, DE, S
Projected pick: Derrick Harvey*, DE, Florida
Harvey could use another season in Gainesville to improve his bulk and strength, but don't count on him returning. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound junior notched 17.5 sacks the past two seasons and will wow scouts with his speed and athleticism during workouts. Harvey could upgrade the Redskins' perimeter pass rush immediately.
17. Arizona Cardinals
Current record: 6-6
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OT, DT, RB
Projected pick: Sam Baker, OT, USC
Baker has the feet and balance of a future Pro Bowl left tackle. Unfortunately, he is neither aggressive nor strong enough to start in the NFL right now. Depending on how many come out, Arizona could have more to choose from with this pick -- at both the offensive and defensive tackle positions.
18. Buffalo Bills
Current record: 6-6
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: TE, CB, OLB
Projected pick: Ali Highsmith, LB, LSU
Paul Posluszny, Buffalo's second-round pick in 2007, showed lots of promise prior to his season-ending injury. The Bills, however, could still use help at the position even if Posluszny returns to form. Cornerback and tight end are bigger needs, but Highsmith is rated higher than the next-best prospect at either position. Highsmith possesses the athleticism and speed to emerge as a playmaking starter in the NFL, but only if his bulk and recognition skills improve.
19. Minnesota Vikings
Current record: 6-6
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: DE, S, C
Projected pick: Calais Campbell*, DE, Miami (Fla.)
Yes, it's true. The Vikings are really in the market for another first-round defensive end. Campbell is first-round material despite failing to live up to expectations in 2007. Sure, he could improve his stock to the top-10 range by returning to school and maximizing his talents as a senior. Though something tells me an athletic 6-7, 285-pound end with 4.7-speed and 17 sacks the past two seasons won't slip far -- even if he's not fully developed.
20. Detroit Lions
Current record: 6-6
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OT, CB, TE
Projected pick: Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh
It looks like the Lions will be selecting outside of the top 10 for the first time since 2001. Now the trick is to find quality players this far down the line. Otah is a late-rising prospect from Nigeria with quick feet for such a massive frame. Otah will take some time to develop but he might be worth the wait.
21. Dallas Cowboys (from 7-5 Cleveland)
Current record: 11-1
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: S, OT, WR
Projected pick: Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
Sweed is the most naturally gifted receiver in the 2008 class if healthy. Unfortunately, the homegrown product's senior season was cut short by a wrist injury. Although durability is a concern, some team could get a steal in the bottom-half of the first round if Sweed returns to form as expected. Owner Jerry Jones has never been one to shy away from risks.
22. Tennessee Titans
Current record: 7-5
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: WR, DT, CB
Projected pick: Malcolm Kelly*, WR, Oklahoma
The Titans need to surround franchise quarterback Vince Young with better perimeter weapons. Young may be forced to befriend a Sooner if his former teammate, Sweed, is off the board. Kelly could use another season of polishing but word out of Norman is the 6-4, 220-pound glider will take his chances in the upcoming NFL draft.
23. San Diego Chargers
Current record: 7-5
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: ILB, DL, RB
Projected pick: Rey Maualuga*, ILB, USC
Maualuga is finishing strong as a junior. He publicly stated he plans on returning to Southern California next fall, but Maualuga wouldn't be the first to renege on such a promise. A strong showing at the combine could catapult the 250-pound middle linebacker into the top-half of the first round.
24. Seattle Seahawks
Current record: 8-4
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OL, S, TE
Projected pick: Jonathan Stewart*, RB, Oregon
The Seahawks have some tough questions to ponder at the running back position in the upcoming offseason. Will Shaun Alexander return to form? Can Maurice Morris be the full-time load-carrier if not? Stewart has yet to indicate his intentions but it wouldn't be a bit surprising if he followed QB Dennis Dixon out of Eugene. Stewart has the versatility, power and burst to thrive in coach Mike Holmgren's system.
25. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Current record: 8-4
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OT, CB, OLB
Projected pick: Aqib Talib*, DB, Kansas
Talib is a versatile athlete with the size, toughness and ball skills to fit well in the Tampa 2. Who knows, maybe coach Jon Gruden would get him some time at wide receiver like Mark Mangino did at Kansas.
26. New York Giants
Current record: 8-4
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OLB, OT, DB
Projected pick: Dan Connor, LB, Penn State
Connor is a bit overrated, but the Giants would be getting a solid value on him at No. 26 overall. Connor moved inside to middle linebacker as a senior but it seems his better fit in the NFL will be at the Will (weakside linebacker) position.
27. Jacksonville Jaguars
Current record: 8-4
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: WR, OLB, S
Projected pick: Vernon Gholston*, DE/OLB, Ohio State
This would have to be worst-case scenario for Gholston, who has 21.5 sacks the past two seasons, including eight in his last four outings. Gholston is a bit undersized but he is powerfully built with above-average speed. The Jaguars would jump at the opportunity to select the junior here, even if end is not a top priority.
28. Pittsburgh Steelers
Current record: 9-3
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: OL, WR, S
Projected pick: Michael Oher*, OT, Mississippi
The Steelers should use this picks to upgrade their offensive line. Oher is reportedly on the fence in regards to staying in school or turning pro. Should he leave early, Oher has all the physical tools a team looks for in a potential starting left tackle. He comes with some baggage, though, and his technique still needs polishing.
29. Green Bay Packers
Current record: 10-2
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: RB, S, OL
Projected pick: Felix Jones*, RB, Arkansas
Ryan Grant has been a nice story this season but the Packers can't count on him as its premier back moving forward. The verdict is still out on rookie Brandon Jackson, who has failed to meet expectations so far. A proven veteran would be ideal but Jones has proven capable of contributing as a complementary weapon. He brings world-class speed to the table as a runner, receiver and return specialist.
30. San Francisco 49ers (from 10-2 Indianapolis)
Current record: 3-9
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: WR, OL, S
Projected pick: Early Doucet, WR, LSU
Obviously, the 49ers would like to have that No. 2 pick back from the Patriots, but they'll have to make due with the 30th pick. Doucet has been bothered by a nagging groin injury, which prevented him from emerging as a reliable No. 1 weapon at LSU this fall. But a couple fast 40 times and a big week at the Senior Bowl could help affirm his big-play potential for NFL decision-makers.
31. Dallas Cowboys
Current record: 11-1
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: S, OT, WR
Projected pick: Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College
The Cowboys can use this pick to bolster their offensive line depth after selecting a wide receiver (Sweed) earlier in the round. Cherilus has struggled in his first year on the left side and in a new system. A team patient enough to rebuild his confidence -- which probably includes moving him back to ROT -- could reap the rewards.
New England Patriots
Current record: 12-0
Scouts Inc.'s three biggest needs: ILB, CB, OLB
Projected pick: Pick forfeited.

New England is on the verge of a perfect season and they get the #2 overall pick in next year's draft.

Great response BARNO, very insightful.
But you still haven't answered why La Canfora doesn't give Heyer any love when he's been great this season for us. All I'm saying is that ever since he wrote how Heyer was gonna suck in the preseason and he was proven wrong but never gave him any compliments or props ...
Posted by: fersaltiel | December 12, 2007 05:34 PM
Settle down Beavis. I agreed with every word you said. It's pretty obvious that had the beat reporter taken a liking to rookie Stephon Heyer early on, instead of starting a controversy and being publicly shunned in the pre-season by the head coacha and owner of organization for his harsh and unfounded criticisms of said rookie, we'd no doubt be reading stories and blog entries about how well Heyer has done--at least in pass blocking--for an undrafted rookie who wasn't even supposed to make the team. But instead, the beat reporter stubbornly doesn't say one positive word about Heyer, and has often mentioned the fact that 31 other teams passed on him.
Let me just say this: Objective is not word I would use to describe the beat reporter.

you hit it kost! Who's there at #32?
Posted by: daggar | December 12, 2007 7:39 PM
Hey Barno,
When Thomas isn't able to play another full game this season...I'm sure our decision to leave him off of IR will look great!
We can't be looking down the road when the end of our season is in our face! Its the here and now that is important!
Posted by: Soup17 | December 12, 2007 05:14 PM
Wait a second! This story sounds familiar! Didn't this happen last year to a player the Redskins put on IR too early and he ended up coming back before the season was over? But the Redskins couldn't play him because they already ended his season officially. Wait for it.....was it...... David....Patten???
Oh, okay. I get it now. You think it will look better to put Randy Thomas on IR now, after we've held a roster spot for him for 13 weeks, when he is so close to returning, and when we need him the most? So that we can pick up world beater Jimmy Farris? Jimmy Farris???
Thomas then soon declares he's "finally healthy", but there's nothing we can do about it because the team has already officially ended his season. After slipping by the Giants without him, we then lose to the Vikes without a solid run game, and all hell breaks loose. Redskins Nation erupts in anger over the putting a nearly recovered starting lineman on IR only to give his spot on an unused wide receiver, the beat reporter blames Joe Gibbs for the incompetent decision, and this becomes the ugliest off season in recent memory.
Great idea. Simply great, Soup. Thank God there are some people out there who have some common sense...

Skins run the table from here on out...meet Dallas in The NFC Championship game and win ince again....Then the Skins go down in history with waht is labaled as the biggest upset of the Century..Beating the Pats in the Superbowl.....31- 30...We MUST HAVE HOPE RIGHT?!

Hey, kost52: Did you check to make sure you didn't lose any type on that long post?
Posted by: Xlnt | December 12, 2007 8:10 PM
leevi, I would like to see the Skins beat the Pats 73-0 in the Super Bowl, with Mark Brunell scoring the last three with a drop kick field goal as the clock expires.
And I would like to see Joe Gibbs "forget" to shake Belichick's hand after the game.
And I would like to see the Commissioner hand the (Redskin Coach Vince) Lombardi Trophy to a winged unicorn, who in turn would hand it to Jason Campbell, the surprise starter for the game who is named MVP.
I would like lots of things.
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 12, 2007 9:32 PM

And the Vikings.
And the Girls.
And everyone else, and then the Cheaters, and then do the unicorn thing. And then the unicorn spears Belicheat and Brady and flies away into the night, never to be seen again.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 12, 2007 10:15 PM
Hayer does not run block well but does OK with pass blocking.
Looking at him you would think the opposite would be the case.

The NE defense does not look good at all.
One more injury and they well be at NO level.
Also two of there recivers are injury prone. One will go down soon I would think.
JETS in a Nor Easter on Sunday. They do have a mobel QB and a run game. I don't think MOSS likes snow.

TC lobed ever single pass. He looked like Chad Penn's dad.
I hope the Jints don't notice.

Beating the Giants?
We have to beat the Giants?
Jesus, that was the horrible absurd loss that started this whole f'ing season reeling.
One of my better poems, though.
But beat the Giants in Jersey? I just don't see it.
And, uh, that would kind of fudbud the whole playoff fantasy. . . .
So, hey, I like koolaid as much as anybody.
But the Giants? Beat the Giants?
Color me skeptical.

btw, it was fun to visit the Izzards blog and see Barno complaining there. And Lisa rebuking him. Felt right at home.

*** fantasy post
In the league populated mostly by Redskins Insider blog peeps, plus a few of kost52's Aussie mates, the regular season is over, and the playoffs begin this weekend.

I caught Nate taping me illegally. The rest is his story.
Actually, I am scared Petrinoless (I retract the sympathy for Petrino I expressed yesterday after seeing him doing hog calls with the Razorbacks today. Giuliani anyone? Sorry for the politics.) because I am playing against Stumped and Tom Brady.
Brady could score 80 on his own. Bring on some Nor'Easter! I can't leave 85 on my bench this week.
Good luck Stumpy, and great being in the league with you guys.

Is there anything else I need to do to become a Core Redskin(s Insider)?
Is I gotta get duct-taped to something?
Am I have to wait for a probationary period?

freak; nope, you're done... just choose something from column A (who needs to go from the front office), Column B (how many overpaid a$$hats need to be cut), Column C (your expert analysis of some bit of NFL esoterica [salary cap is always a good place to start]), and Column D (the list of bloggers that you hate and promise to attack at every turn) and you should be all set.

Fearing jm220 is definitely a requirement of being a core insider.
Having a sense of humor is a must, but you can tell we have some borderline members.
Having internet access at work is not necessary, but advantageous.
At Eastern Motors, your jobs your credit.
You have to be fickle and have really high expectations every year and by week 8 you've had enough.
I'm not sure if these are real core RI requirements... I mostly just talked about myself.
Posted by: Dorf | December 13, 2007 12:10 AM
Dorf, right there at the end you hit on another core requirement: the ability to mostly talk about oneself.

Freakzilla, Everyone knows unicorns don't fly. Now, if Pegasus bred with a unicorn, then the offspring (a Pegacorn) would fly and still have a horn with which to spear Bellicheat and that smarmy little cockroach Brady. Personally, I'd like to see the fire breathing bear from the Urlacher Fathead commercial eat Brady and then have that weird euro announcer dude kiss Bellicheck on the lips, after which the hoodie comes out of the closet and the two fly home to Massachusetts and get married. Then the unicorn could kill everyone (but not fly away).

Also, each time you get quoted in the print version of the newspaper, you get a helmet sticker.
They're just those little gold foil stickers, like back in grade school, so they don't show up very well unless you're really close to the helmet, and if you're like me it's hard to find a good excuse to wear the helmet at home and work (my compromise: I wear it during the commute), but they do make you super proud to have stepped up to help out the team.

Geez, I just finished up some work for my moonlighting job and was fixing to go to bed so that I could get up in the morning for my regular job, but noooooo....
Okay, let's see how fast I can knock this out.
Per cload (and I already did my reading and know how you got such a handle):
Column A - Vinny. Duh. Possibly the guy who takes his Vinny's lunch order, too. Depends on how close to Vinny he's standing when the axe comes down.
Column B - Receiver, The. Maybe I'm a softie, but he's the only current B&G wearer who I'd deem an a$$hat. That doesn't mean he's the only one I'd cut after this year. Brunell, a great player when in his prime, who I'll always love for 2005, but with Todd available, doesn't serve his intended purpose after this year. Caldwell & Farris - ain't doin' nothin' here, thanks for coming but go somewhere else where you can play (assuming Farris can play). Fabini & Kendall - pasture's that way, go enjoy your money. McCardell - you're old, and you can still play, and you've been clutch this year when we've called your number, but vet minimum for you is hefty; I love ya, but sorry. Of course there are more, but I have a bed to get to.
Column C: This is 2007, almost 2008. There is no good reason why anyone should ever lose headset communications for more than a few seconds. The NFL needs to hire someone to design a sideline communications system with multiple levels of redundancy and make every stadium install said system. (Didn't want to touch salary cap. I'm a Technical Writer and a Christian. I have an easier time with system design, and the salary cap involves witchcraft.)
Column D - Ummm...Barno? And that other guy.
I can write haiku. Here is one I wrote several years back. It's called "Darva Conger":
I'm a Christian girl
I just want my privacy
Look at my boobies!
Per Nate's SAT-inspired ratio question:
I wouldn't make that comparison. Not at all, actually. In fact, I'd say ES is more like RI with a budget, way more people, and thus the necessity for rules. The mods there have the same intolerance for a$$clownery as RI, but with the ability to eliminate the offenders when necessary. Despite being official, criticism of the organization isn't censored.
I'd say Ghostbusters : GI Joe :: RI : ES.
Dorf: I try not to talk about myself too much. I prefer to let my play do my talking for me. (Okay, sometimes I call Jasno's cell to vent off the record, but don't tell Barno.)
MrDumberton: In my dimension -- well, my old one anyway (don't know if I'll ever get back now that the portal closed) -- unicorns can fly, as can people with unibrows and people who use Uniball brand pens. My people are pretty sure that Pegasus was fictional, however.
Okay, there. Now in the immortal words of Eric Cartman, "Screw you guys. I'm going home."
'Night!

That was classic, Barno.
Oh, and what is up with Gibbs and Thrash? We get it. He's a man of God, he fights his guts out, etc, etc. But Gibby acts like he'd rather bone Thrash then actually win a game.
Gibby was "REALLY" optimistic about Thrash as he tucked his boner up into the waist band of his wind pants.
Posted by: RickyBobby | December 13, 2007 8:02 AM
RickyBobby, did you forget that Thrash had a FABULOUS game before he got hurt?
Posted by: Lisa_R | December 13, 2007 8:08 AM
wait I missed it... is Lisa back to Lisa R?
And Thrash has been such an anomaly on this team... one week we hate him, the next he's our best receiver and him not being available actually hurts the team.
I'm no psychologist, but me thinks RickyBobby has a thing for him too.
Carpe Toddiem everyone!
Posted by: Dorf | December 13, 2007 8:17 AM
Lisa and Dorf,
Yes, he had a GREAT game before he got hurt, but Thrash is Thrash. He's a decent fill-in WR and good special teams guy, but Gibbs makes him out to be the most valuable player on this team.
Don't get me wrong, I like Thrash, he might be the most valuable PERSON on the team, but Gibbs talk him up to be some pro bowl player when he's not.

And by Kip, don't you mean "Eli, if he had a pair"?

Posted by: freakzilla | December 13, 2007 9:08 AM
Thanks for posting those draft links. The one, college rivals, has us taking a safety in the 2nd round. Not just any safety, but a 5 foot 10, 185 pound safety. Um....no thanks. I'd prefer a guard, or a tall wide-out.
Also, the chances that the Pats stay at #2 is similar to Barno and Jasno having drinks this evening. Its just not happening. Some team is going to fall in love with Mcfadden and pay a kings ransom to move up. Not to mention that the Pats spent a 1st round pick in 2005 on a rb.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | December 13, 2007 9:09 AM
Lisa you should really chill about being offended by any anti-skins opinion.
reasons:
#1 Skins always play better when they are getting dissed instead of hand-jobs. That goes back to Gibbs 1.0. I think the only SB we were favored in was Raiders, and look how that turned out....(on a personal level with me crying myself to sleep...)
#2 In the 24 hour news cycle everyone has an opionons. Opinions are like todds, everyone picks one.
#3 Pundits are basically weatherpeople and say echo the conventional wisdom. The CW of skins for 15 years is that they are a joke, so getting behind that gives you a hight probability of being right.
#4 who cares??? you luv'em...believe in em...thats all that matters!
#5 Life is short who cares what these people say? Skins are agita inducing enough, don't make yoself sick with these bafoons!

"Weird rivalry, Giants and 'Skins. At some point, the Giants will pay for being such an inconsistent offensive team. Combine that with Washington having some time to get over the death of Sean Taylor, and I think Joe Gibbs gets one last heroic performance out of his team.
Redskins 19, Giants 17 "
Um, "one last heroic performance" meaning he's already predicting that we'll drop the last two? Or that whatever happens after this Sunday, it won't be heroic?
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 13, 2007 9:34 AM
That's sort of what I'm saying RB - I don't think Thrash is a pro bowl game changing down the field endzone finding cure all threat. I liked the prospect of getting a Chad Johnson on this team. We have lacked that type of receiver for some time now... wasn't Brian Michael Westbrook supposed to be that guy? Santana Moss is not the prototypical NFL star receiver. Yeah he's fast, but he doesn't necessarily make defenses adjust to him (especially this year). He had a great season in 2005, but that was in Gibbs' dink and dunk system. They never spread the field and took advantage of their stellar running game (where'd that go?). I would not complain if we went out and got a sure-fire guaranteed to produce stud, I'm just not sure about the cap room and such.
Oh yeah,
If Wonder Woman had balls, she'd be Todd Collins.

I want to revise something I wrote last night:
In fact, I'd say ES is more like RI with a budget, way more people, and thus the necessity for rules.
I'll also add that RI seems to have a higher per capita IQ. There are some really smart people on ES, but also plenty of giant, car-engulfing puddles of dumb. I guess that's the nature of the beast with a board that size. Plus, RI is like a book with no pictures.
The average ESer is more likely to get all of the jokes on Family Guy.
The average RIer (literally, Redskins Insiderer) is more likely to get all of the jokes on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 13, 2007 10:55 AM
Concerened most about our lack of a running game.....bad weather on the road back up qb, would be nice to be able to keep the defense honest....my guess is we will all know pretty early if 3 and 0 is more than just an RI collective prayer....gotta find a few big plays and a running game
Posted by: Oldschool | December 13, 2007 11:06 AM
The reason I got so upset with Shapiro is due to his previous slanderous remarks about Sean Taylor. So hearing him sit there with his pot belly and say the Skins were "toast" just sent me over the edge.
Incidentally, Barno, I was watching WaPo Live to hear Ken Harvey, not that nasty Shapiro - who just happened to be a guest as well. As soon as I heard Harvey's remarks, I did change the channel. So take that!!!

Barno, the Skins didn't put David Patten on IR ... and he played in the season closer ... against the Giants ... and dropped two of what could have been game saving catches in the last series of the 4th quarter.
Nate, re: the print edition sticker, I don't have a helmet. [I used to wear one, but my parents and Skippy's parents sued the school system over it b/c they are demeaning.] I wear my sticker on my forehead.
Those mock drafts are way wrong. If he declares, no way DE Calais Campbell falls out of the top ten. Same with WR Limas Sweed.
Posted by: dcsween | December 13, 2007 11:44 AM
Barno, that geeked me out. lol
Posted by: sams3 | December 13, 2007 11:47 AM
Though I'm not ready to talk about post-season (or either of the games past this weekends), or the draft, or free agency, I am ready to talk about positions of need (to be filled either through FA or the draft).
My need list goes: (1) free safety, (2/3) guard/wide receiver, (4) corner.
My want list goes: (1) defensive end, (2) free safety, (3) corner, (4) guard, (5) wide receiver.
Sean Taylor's absence changes the identity of the team. Pete Kendall's/Phillip Daniel's biological clocks are ticking.
Posted by: dcsween | December 13, 2007 11:49 AM
Sween my man,
The Skins did put Patten on IR, it was just in 05, not 06. Remember this?
http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/14324.html
"As the season wound down, a mini-controversy sprang up. Patten was quoted as saying that his placement on IR had been premature, and that his slightly torn meniscus was healed. And then, in the offseason, the brilliant young receivers were brought in. If anybody thought Patten's days were numbered after he had aired his dirty laundry in the press, now it seemed a foregone conclusion."

From SI.Com - the watchability of this weekend's games. We made the top 3 of games that are must-see.
SUPERGLUE YOURSELF TO THE COUCH
3. Washington (6-7) at N.Y. Giants (9-4) 8:15 p.m. -- Their Week 3 battle was epic (remember the Giants goal-line stand in the final minute?) and there's no reason to believe Sunday will be any different. In their first game without having Sean Taylor's death or funeral in the forefront of their minds, the Redskins will need the focus with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.
