Another Day At The Circus
Another day, another round of rumors du jour, eh? Don't you just get the feeling the owner is eating up all this pseudo-intrigue and BS? Oh the drama. There is one guy already here who makes the most sense, but this cloak and dagger stuff (tried to repeat my old typo there - for the OGS - but forgot. Was it cload and dagger?) is probably irresistible for some people.
First of all, a disclaimer: I am not reporting this stuff as fact. In an era of rampant speculation I am being as careful as I can.
But with my email getting whacked by requests for info, I wanted to post something between calls.
I continue to hear that Jim Fassel, former Giants coach and Baltimore assistant, could be getting a look. Could is the operative word there. His name keeps popping up among sources. He could - there's that word again - be headed to town from Green Bay, where he did the radio broadcast of the NFC game Sunday. But I do NOT know this as fact yet.
Getting a lot of emails about Giants D Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as well. Two sources who would normally have direct knowledge of any such interaction between the Redskins and Giants - to ask for permission to speak to him - have said they have heard nothing of it. Would be stunned if somehow it was taking place without them knowing. Are like 99 percent sure it's not happening ... but I can not say I have that last 1 percent accounted for, so again, take that as it is.
Also, Russ Grimm's name keeps popping up out there. Spoke to someone close to him who chatted with Russ today, as the Arizona assistant was flying to the Senior Bowl in Mobile. Any possible interview with Grimm remains unconfirmed - I continue to hear he and his agent have told people there was no interview with Snyder - and Russ has heard nothing from the Redskins recently, according to the source.
So I'll keep chasing everything down and figuring out what, if anything, the Redskins are up to. All of my reporting thus far has continued to lead to Williams, and we'll see if that changes as this thing drags out.

From Peter King of CNNSI.com
Washington (9-8). "I'm not interested in winning any press conferences,'' Dan Snyder told one of the candidates who interviewed for the head-coaching job. "I'm interested in winning the Super Bowl.'' Here's one of the strangest things about this coaching search: Snyder has talked to Gregg Williams about the job four times. This is a guy he's seen in the building for four years now.
Posted by: i155133 | January 21, 2008 1:18 PM
Things that make you go hmm on a Monday:
- Gregg still not named the head coach after the Rooney Rule has been satisfied
- Mora bowing out (could holmgren be retiring?)
- Mystery candidate reportedly interviewed twice?
- Gregg has not spoken publically since Joe Gibbs annouced his retirement
- Cower, Vermeil, Fassel, Mora and now M000ooch - not names we thought would be in the mix.
- Head coach by the end of the week? If not it'll make us all start speculating that the coach they are most interested in is on the Giants or Patriots team.
Stay tuned... should be a fun week. GG's shot at being coach is almost in the luke warm stages.

In Grilliams we trust

The suspense kills me!

More from Peter King:
In Washington, it sounds like Gregg Williams is the leader in the clubhouse, and I'm not sure he fits the mold of the oft-impulsive Dan Snyder; but Williams is a direct, pointed guy.
Posted by: i155133 | January 21, 2008 1:26 PM
I'll repeat an earlier point - if Williams is the guy after all this charade, how will that affect him and the team? Even if he is in on the ruse, reports are that the other coaches have heard nothing from Snyder & Co. Looks more and more like the urge for dysfunction is appearing stronger adn stronger.
Posted by: i155133 | January 21, 2008 1:28 PM
i still think that even snyder doesn know who he wants, I really doubt it will be Cowher or Vermil. I dont remember fossil being a good HC, but I could be mistaken. I think Snyder will interview anyone who he sees as possibly being a good HC for us, just to make sure he makes the best descion he can. That doesnt mean he will make the best descion though,
Posted by: SAK2 | January 21, 2008 1:36 PM
So, if we use logic and our knowlege of our owner, what do the signs point to? Something splashy? I think so... if he can't get it he has his fall back plan, GG.
So really simple right? He is looking for the big splash first:
Cower, Mariucci, Vermeil
Posted by: JoeyV | January 21, 2008 1:36 PM
I woke up this morning convinced that GW and The Danny are playing this out in an attempt to see if any "great" assistants pop up without having to fire anybody currently on the staff.
They can interview and consider the possibilities under the guise of the looking for a HC, and not worry about psing anybody off(big Al maybe).
It must be GW or Snyder really is lost in space(and that space/time continuem is stuck somewhere, myabe in 1990).
Snyder needs to get his head out of his A#$ in a hurry though, it's time to get to work on the draft, and if the staff is changing, they need to know it.
Posted by: craig2 | January 21, 2008 1:36 PM
Danny Snyda - if you f this up your dead to me...don't go pull some bozo off another club that knows nothing of our history and the NFC Beast...I mean c'mon.
Grilliams deserves it no doubt and if somehow it's not him we better win the division next year and go deep...nothing else is acceptable.

something tells me danny didn't strike it rich by being an idiot. he made mistakes when he first started, but he's come a long way since then. i see no problem with him taking as long as possible to find a coach. better to make a guy wait and make sure he's the best for the job than to be impulsive again and hire the wrong guy.
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 1:52 PM
But it has to be Cowher! It has to be! All along, Jason has been telling us that Dan Snyder always always wants to make a big splash! That is what everybody says! Even when Charlie Cassrely, the day after Gibbs retired, said to "Take Cowher off your list", Jason and all the other lazy media schlubs kept on saying, "Cowher is very likely because the owner always wants to make a big splash!" Big Splash Big Splash Big Splash! Cowher Cowher Cowher!

Wow...just wow! We're now measuring our coaching suspicions in Lear Jets and volleyball games. Talk about your foreign currency. Where's Thomas Cook when you need him?
I think 4th Floor is right and he'll be having a good laugh tomorrow. You're not going to announce your coach during the championship games, and you might not even announce him on MLK's day. They wouldn't bother announcing the new Pope during the World Cup final. I'd expect a big dose of GGGGG's tomorrow.

Profootballtalk.com is reporting another "mystery candidate" that $nyder is interviewing today or tomorrow. BTW, it's been confirmed by the league that a team can promise that a team's assistant coach will be the next HC w/o satisfying the Rooney Rule, provided it's in the coach's contract.
Imagine what the NFL world would look like, if Campbell could have gotten a touchdown on one of those 4 tries at the goal line...

Thanks, sk8, I'll listen to it in a second. Someone posted it last night but I was importing Soul Coughing: Irresistible Bliss. Now I'm on Soundgarden: Superunknown. Not the freshest beats, I know. Recent hard-drive crash has me reloading everything.
But, I must admit, that new Lupe Fiasco joint is off the hook.

I'm thinking like Schneed10... why is noone talking about Jimmy Johnson. If Redskins One is out -or has been out- in Green Bay, they aren't looking at Fassel. The bigger catch would Jimmy Johnson... he may like retirement, but the old Double J like the dollar bills more!
Nobody buying Jimmy Johnson's comeback to battle and spite Jerry Jones twice a year!?!
Posted by: bgmoneym20 | January 21, 2008 2:31 PM
I'm in the group that thinks the gig is already G-Williams, and they're just trying to have everything buttoned up when they do finally go public.
If this was not the case, wouldn't it make sense that Gregg would be making the rounds interviewing with other teams? I mean, if he wasn't getting the gig, wouldn't other teams be calling the Redskins to interview him?
Or is that just too simple....
Posted by: gregmarino88 | January 21, 2008 2:32 PM
You want Jimmy? Remember his stint in Miami (and that whoop-ass the Jags put on him)?

You want Jimmy? Remember his stint in Miami (and that whoop-ass the Jags put on him)?
Posted by: nojunk4me | January 21, 2008 2:35 PM
GG can only interview with other teams for head-coaching gigs. because he's still under contract here, he's not allowed to interview for anything less, unless snyder ok's it. my hunch tells me he's not a serious candidate for head coaching gigs outside of DC.
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 2:36 PM
Let's consider that GW doesnt want the responsibilities of the HC job... what if he is sitting up there with Snyder, Gibbs and Cerato contemplating who would be the best fit for the HC & GW is staying on as DC, because that's what he wants to do?
Posted by: bgmoneym20 | January 21, 2008 2:36 PM
The trend this year is against retread coaches. I think the owners looking for head coaches this time around are the more thoughtful types, with the exception of our guy, who happens to be an impetuous jerk.
Arthur Blank, Bill Parcells (for all intents and purposes the owner down there), and Steve Bisciotti are all guys who have football men in place making good football decisions. As a result, they're not looking for the big name hire and are all looking for the next John Fox or Mike Tomlin.
That's my theory as to why GG is not getting interviews elsewhere.
As for the 'Skins, I think taking a knee on 4th and 1 would be, uh, dumb, but not out of character. After all, this is the team that called two timeouts in a row...
Posted by: PDiddy | January 21, 2008 2:37 PM
Funny, the only reason I still think GG has the best shot is because he has been so quiet. If he didn't have a shot it seems like we would see him more in the public.
However, the more time that passes the less chance he has of getting the job.
Speculatory comment:
What if GG doesn't want the job? Is that even a possibility? Maybe he is acting as an advisor like Gibbs and wants to find a guy who gels with him?
Extremely out there:
What if Snyder is looking for the first WOMAN head coach! ow, I just hurt my braaaiiinnn...
Posted by: JoeyV | January 21, 2008 2:39 PM
Dorf was close. Under the cload of darkness, Fudge-Ums will ride into town on a winged unicorn and become the new coach.
Posted by: 4-12 | January 21, 2008 2:39 PM
let's not forget what Jimmy Johnson did in Dallas, and how he built that team from the ground up... one of the best coaching jobs I've seen in my time. I mean he would bring the talent evaluator that this organization needs... lets not forget that it is Jimmy's formula that is used by almost the entire league to rate draft prospects...
Posted by: bgmoneym20 | January 21, 2008 2:40 PM
I don't think you'd see a press conference today because of the holiday and the respect most businesses will afford MLK and those who honor his memory.
I'd bet you'd see a press conference tomorrow with GG named head coach. If there isn't one tomorrow, then all the GG lemmings can rightfully start panicking.
Posted by: PDiddy | January 21, 2008 2:41 PM
From the previous blog entry... "(though at 31 that would be quite a bold stroke and not sure how many of Washington's ubber-experienced coaches would want to stick around to work under somone that young)."
Really? The old guys aren't quitting just so that they can have one last year's worth of paycheck? They'd actually stick around? I mean, I hope Buges is here next year, but past that what's the reasoning past the coaches staying *and* the new (or old) OC wanting them?
Posted by: WorstSeat | January 21, 2008 2:43 PM
While I think that Jimmy Johnson would make an excellent coach, he seems to enjoy being retired. I just can't see that happening.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | January 21, 2008 2:45 PM
The skins are the only team in the market for a new head coach that has actually interviewed a "retread" coach, and they interviewed 2 (mora and GW). If you look at the final 4 teams this year, 3 of the 4 are retreads...
Posted by: puttinforbird | January 21, 2008 2:46 PM
It think the reason for the delay is that Gibbs and Danny are arm wrestling and Gibbs keeps winning. Danny wants the splash, Gibbs wants Williams
Posted by: JoeyV | January 21, 2008 2:46 PM
The only reason I'm harping on Jimmy Johnson is that, do you think Snyder sent Redskins One to Green Bay to visit with Fassel or Johnson? I mean, who would make the bigger splash that Danny may be trying to drop?
Posted by: bgmoneym20 | January 21, 2008 2:48 PM
Greg,
What you are saying makes sense, but I don't think anyone has a clear picture of what's going on here. I guess Gregg could make rounds interviewing with other teams, but many of those teams might be dissuaded in interviewing him if they think he's got the inside track on the Skins HC job.
You can spin what's going on with the search in a million different ways. You can say Dan Synder is doing the right thing by taking his time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of all available candidates to make sure he makes the best decision possible or you can call him an idiot for taking so damn long to pick GWill. You can say GWill is the shoo in for the job and it is already his, or you can say he can't be the candidate Synder wants to pick because otherwise, Snyder would have already made this decision.
I don't think anyone knows (or is ever going to know) exactly what's going on (went on) during this process, so all the "information" right now is speculation and innuendo. Since there's not much (if anything) you can do to influence things, sit back and do your best to enjoy the show.

Are we 100 percent certain that the "redskin 1 to Green Bay" happened? Or is this like the line that gets trotted out during the free agency signing period of, "the redskins are said to be interested". It makes for good press, but not much more....
Posted by: gregmarino88 | January 21, 2008 2:51 PM
i dont think if he wanted to create a "splash" jim fassel would be the name popping up. neither would the likes of marriucci. they may be recognizable names, but not necessarily "big".

Marriucci is a big name, he was the 4th coach in 49ers history in wins.

if the chargers can keep everyone there, theyll be nasty next year. every one of their key cogs is either yuong and developing or in the middle of their prime. they were the better team on sunday, in my opinion, its just tough to win with a qb on one leg, your best aerial threat on one leg, and your best overall talent sitting on the sideline.
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 3:11 PM
the mystery candidate IS Marty Schottenheimer...i would love to have that dude back. but all in all, when this thing is said and done, the next HC will be Vinny Cerrato. I mean, he has been here since Danny Boy and is the epitimy of continuity. Who is more revered in Danny's eyes than Gibbs? Vinn! Open your eyes people, he will be our next HC and will subsequently trade all of our draft picks to Green Bay for Brett Favre, who will then retire 3 days later.
Posted by: jmc2007 | January 21, 2008 3:14 PM
There's no reason not to hire Williams - we've had a top 10 defense in 3 of the 4 years he's been here. He clearly took stock of himself and the D he had and actually checked his ego and made the necessary changes to give our team a chance to win this year. He's proven that he can change and the players respect him and should play hard for him.
Posted by: david | January 21, 2008 3:16 PM
david, I completely agree, its such an obvious choice. I have to think that Gibbs on his way out, 'might' have hinted around that Williams would be the best guy for the job, that continuity would benefit the team.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | January 21, 2008 3:27 PM
they were the better team on sunday...
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 03:11 PM
...same as last year. Marty was 14-2 with the Chargers, before losing to the Pats in the playoffs, 24-21. He was fired.
Norv was 12-5 this year before losing to the Pats in the playoffs, 21-12.
If the Chargers--for whatever reason--don't deliver next year, then what? I'll be watching curiously... it's not like Norv has a strong record of head coaching success to fall back on.

I'd have to think that if Williams was no longer in the running we would have heard something about it by now after 4 meetings. If rumors keep coming around and he isnt named in the next day or 2 all bets are off. Fassel would be an embarassment. He got fired by Billick and hasn't sniffed a head coach interview in 3 years, nuff said.

Posted by: jmc2007 | January 21, 2008 03:14 PM
That actually makes sense. It's got to be someone who isn't currently affiliated with another team (i.e., a former HC or a college guy). I don't see them going with a college guy after the Spurrier mess. The only former HC's that make sense (to me anyway) are Marty, Cowher, and Holmgren if he retires - not sure what we'd have to give the Seahawks in return though.

The only reason Danny would be in Green Bay is to gather DNA from Lombardi so his crack team of scientists could start working on cloning him.
I hear his scientists have already successfully cloned Mark Brunell to keep him on the roster (his death of old age was covered up last year when JC officially became the starter).

just heard that dan snyder has traded vinny cerrato for brett favre and two undisclosed mid-round draft picks. the packers are said to be in need of a strong front office presence as they're in salary cap hell from drafting too many players over the past 5 seasons.

i am holding out hope its gonna be grimm, although GG is prolly the guy and thats fine...
i think grimm would rule and would prove my 1.5 year prediction true, and i love being right...

Congrats trailblazer, we are wondering the same thing.
Posted by: SAK2 | January 21, 2008 4:03 PM
schneed10,
Just a thought: If the rumor that Snyder was at yesterday's game is true, then Skins1 might just be flying out there to pick Snyder up and bring him home. The flight log doesn't show an earlier flight to GB, but he could've hitched a ride with someone else.
Posted by: freakzilla | January 21, 2008 4:04 PM
I will now prepare myself for the onslaught...Bracing...
Other than the fact that Williams would provide continuity/stability I wouldnt mind having Mooch as our coach...

I have on good authority from a good friend who is high ranking within an organization that:
1. Jimmy Johnson will be named President of Football operations
2. Greg Williams will be named coach of the Redskins
Announcement should come tomorrow.

Caldwell is also suppose to be at the presser, along with the president of the team and the GM. I think it points to him stepping down. Schefter has been saying alot of stuff lately.

I guess so, but given that Glazer reported on Fox last night that there was an interview set up with a "mystery candidate" for Monday, I think it's more likely that the plane is either taking Snyder to someone in Green Bay, or bringing someone from Green Bay back to Snyder. Like JLC says, Fassell was in GB covering the game. But so was Jimmy Johnson. And Glazer couldn't have known we had an interview set up with a Packers or Giants coach, because when Glazer announced it he didn't know whether the Giants or Pack would be bounced from the playoffs. It's either Fassell or Jimmy Johnson. My money's on JJ, knowing big-splash Snyder.

Congrats on the new one TB.
I don't particularly like Rivers. Seems like a loudmouth who is kinda average so far. But playing on a torn ACL I won't question his toughness.

This would actually make sense, but really doubt that JJ would come out of retirement to be president for his former teams rival.
Posted by: SAK2 | January 21, 2008 4:12 PM
you all see that rivers was playing on a completely torn acl and had his knee scoped last monday for meniscus damage just to be able to play in that game yesterday. i just gained a lot of respect for that guy.
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 4:12 PM
I was just poking around over on one of the Seahawks message boards, and they are just as excited about Mora staying in Seattle as we are.
More proof of my theory that the average fan out here doesn't know much about football.
Posted by: freakzilla | January 21, 2008 4:14 PM
Yeah, gained for Rivers, but lost a little for Tomlinson, who didn't play when his team needed him the most. Kind of strange...

1. I don't think JJ has any more ties to Dallas.
2. He still hates, and I mean hates Jerry Jones. Jerry was 10 times worse than Snyder when Jimmy was coach in Dallas.
All of this is just personal opinion and does not come from "good authority from a good friend who is high ranking within an organization."
Posted by: isnadd | January 21, 2008 4:15 PM
well remember JJ doesn't particularly like the cowboys and he hates the other JJ (Jerry Jones). It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him taking a position here. And I would be all for it, because I do think he has one of the best eyes for talent this league has seen (at least he did 10 years ago while he was coaching).
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 4:15 PM
I think the JJs have buried the hatchet, and have done a bunch of TV spots together...
F the JJs
Posted by: chrislarry | January 21, 2008 4:16 PM
Tomlinson's tough. If he didn't play it was because he couldn't play. Rivers shouldn't have played. He had a bad day. His backup should have been in the game.

"good authority from a good friend who is high ranking within an organization."
what does "an" organization entail. does this not mean "the" organization?

psps23,
You're a high ranking official in the organization known as Redskins Insider. Consider yourself qualified to spread rumors.
Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 21, 2008 4:19 PM
Ooops. Nate's here. Everybody look busy.
Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 21, 2008 4:20 PM
its so much more fun if you actually believe a rumor could be true.
Posted by: psps23 | January 21, 2008 4:21 PM
trailblazer, that is great news, congrats, dude.
Sure feels good to come back to the blog to relax, doesn't it? By 'relax' I mean fret about Snyder making a misstep that sets the franchise back six years.
Posted by: NateinthePDX | January 21, 2008 4:22 PM
SAK2, Schefter's report is probably correct. The local news media in Indy is also reporting that Dungy will return. They also stated that Caldwell will be at the presser.....maybe they are going to anoint him as Dungy's predecessor in 2009.

Lisa, Probably you meant to write successor? Otherwise, it gets kind of Twilight Zoney, which would be interesting, too.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 21, 2008 04:23 PM
That makes sense, he did pull his name from open jobs he was going to interview for. It just seems like alot of people for a press conference to say whether hes coming back or not. but its almost 430 so we'll find out soon.
Posted by: SAK2 | January 21, 2008 4:26 PM
Oops....yes, I meant successor :)
Posted by: Lisa_R | January 21, 2008 4:31 PM
What does a "Director of Football Operations" position entail exactly? And what does that do the Cerrato's role?
Other than JJ being a big-name, this move does not seem very "Dannyish."
Posted by: CBT | January 21, 2008 4:35 PM
i would basically envision it to mean the same thing as team president, president of football ops, general manager, all of the above, with the notable exception of possibly not having final say over personnel decisions (that i would expect would still fall on snyder). that would be kind of strange to hire a director of football ops and a head coach at the same time, don't you think?

Dungy Can't Quit Colts
Indianapolis fans, take heart. Your team didn't make it back to the Super Bowl this season, but the team announced Monday that coach Tony Dungy will return to the sideline next season. (ESPN)

Jimmy Johnson, President of Football Ops
Gregg Williams, Head Coach
Jim Schwartz, Assistant HC, Defense
Tomorrow.

Jason, can you find out who from the Skins organization is at the Senior Bowl practice? Vinny usually attends....is he still at the Park?
Also, how can we be certain Gregg Williams has interviewed 4 times? Keep hearing this said but is there any evidence?

Danny's jet was in GB to pick up the bikini girls so they could train the Redskins cheerleaders on the fine art of staying warm during winter despite wearing little to no clothing
http://www.green-bay-packer.com/2007/12/31/green-bay-packers-bikini-girls/
They're cute and I'm sure they're very nice, but you gotta be nuts (and extremely hammered?) to wear a bikini in 0 degree weather.

Adam, you said you're heading for NYC soon? I'll be there in a few weeks as well. If those people were insufferable a few weeks ago when I was there, they should be off the charts leading up to the SB. Girding my loins for the onslaught of the chooches.

Are those Packers girls are wearing blue lipstick? I'm guessing their lips weren't so blue when they first got there.

how reliable are those skins sources who are claiming Jimmy Johnson is coming to town as Team President?
Posted by: bgmoneym20 | January 21, 2008 6:27 PM
I used to work with a guy who played for Fosseil back in college. Guy was probably around 35-40, was a running back. Said that Fosseil was a horrible coach, had good x's and o's but he was totally unable to motivate his players.
