Cowher Madness

Great games today, eh?
Had a feeling this NFC game was going OT from the half.

Anywa, rumors going nuts about Cowher and the Redskins. Went back and watched the CBS post-game clip in question and at one point Cowher clearly states how enticing the Skins job would be for any coach ... "But not for Bill Cowher."

Spoke to a person very close to Cowher tonight who says nothing has changed in his approach at all. He's not coming back to coaching in 2008 and loves what he is doing. Again, who knows. Maybe some $50 million deal at the last minute changes his mind.

The Redskins coaches still have heard nothing from the front office about the search. Also heard that Jim Mora was never offered the job, contrary to a FOX report, and that no one has been offered anything to this point, in fact. The idea that Mora walked away from a potential life-changing payday at this stage of his career, out of hand, frankly, is laughable.

Was hoping for 1 upset today. This wasn't the one.

damn gints

Posted by: kenneth920 | January 20, 2008 10:18 PM

Best game of the entire year, regardless of teams. Nothing but respect. Second (or third) or something.

Posted by: messier.dawn | January 20, 2008 10:18 PM

Grilliams will be announced by Tuesday. End the madness.

Posted by: Alan4 | January 20, 2008 10:19 PM

I'm betting that the "mystery candidate" this week is Josh McDaniels. You're allowed to interview Super Bowl assistants in the week off. I think McDaniels would be a fine choice. Dude has the demeanor, talent, and Belichickness to be a great NFL head coach.

My order of preference: GG, McDaniels, and Grimm.

Posted by: PDiddy | January 20, 2008 10:19 PM

This just SUCKS.

Honestly, one cannot count the Giants out in the Super Bowl....they have now won 10 (I think) straight road games and the Pats did not look very impressive today.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 10:20 PM

Does Norval get fired like Marty now?

Posted by: Alan4 | January 20, 2008 10:21 PM

I won't count them out of staying within 2 touchdowns. That's about it.

Posted by: Original_etrod | January 20, 2008 10:22 PM

i know this is revisionism at its very best, but the nfc did turn out to be wide open in the end.

man, if the skins had gotten past the seahawks, we might be talking about gibbs v. belicheck part 3

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:23 PM

And they wanted to fire Coughlin after last season. Maybe this is a lesson to the Danny to have some patience with coaches not named Gibbs.

Posted by: ksimonetti | January 20, 2008 10:26 PM

if someone told me, that manning v brady would be a big game in the posseason, my reaction would've been "no, duh".

however, the biggest game in the postseason? who would've thunk it?

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:27 PM

The Mora situation seems like a guy who did not expect to get named coach, so he withdraws to not have to look bad when he's passed over. He has always seemed like a pretty shameless self promoter, and who wouldn't be after watching your father act like a goof ball repeatedly on television. During his coaching career and now again on NFL Network.

Posted by: bhayesp | January 20, 2008 10:27 PM

And the Giants owner even brings up the fact that they were 0-2 and getting beat 17-3 until Gibby the Clown and the Skins turned their season around. This feels worse than getting punched in the potato sack.

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 10:27 PM

even Howie brings up the goal line stand against the Skins.

this is going to be the worst 2 weeks ever.

I hope the Patriots beat them by 50 points, but I honestly think the Giants have a darn good shot at beating them.

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 10:30 PM

Early line:
NE -13.5
ou: 55

Posted by: puttinforbird | January 20, 2008 10:31 PM

i don't know why people are harping on the 3rd game of the season like the skins are the sole reason the gints are in the super bowl.

they won 10 games on the road, an nfl record. congratulations to a great season and let's hope they beat the pats and more importantly the skins beat them both times next season

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:31 PM

Miserable Super Bowl but I do think it will be a close one.

Giants always win on the road and the Patriots win - no matter whether they play that well or not.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 10:34 PM

hailbg,

we single-handedly turned their season around and saved Coughlin's job. if Gibby doesn't lose one of his 800 halftime leads in that game, the Giants are 0-3 and heading to a 6-10 season. no doubt about it.

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 10:35 PM

C'mon.....the Giants beating us in that game did not turn their season around. It was one win for them but they went up and down until late in the season.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 10:38 PM

johnw,

I disagree that the gints would be 6-10. they're a very good team. You don't win 10 games on the road, lose to the pats by a mere 3 points, and beat the number 1 and 2 teams in the NFC on the road (in Lambeau no less) unless you're a top team

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:38 PM

oh well....good for the Jints... very impressive feat..

on the road Tampa Bay
on the road Dallas
on the road Green Bay

You know what...i HATE HATE HATE the Jints....but...damn if they didn't pull this off. Good for them...but gimme the "Evil Empire"...GO PATS !!!

Posted by: cej75024 | January 20, 2008 10:38 PM

I watched the game with some Pats fans. The talked about the red soxs a lot.

I guess looseing the the Giants was not that bad after all.

I think they have a much better chance than the Packers vs the Pats. They should be better in the secondary this time around and Plex will be 90 percent.

Posted by: mul | January 20, 2008 10:39 PM

Giants played them tough and lost 38-35 when they had nothing to gain from a win. Now, with the Super Bowl at stake -- could at least be a good game which is a lot to ask from a Super Bowl.

Go Giants -- they've had a great season and won three road playoff games to get to the Super Bowl. And Jeremy Shockey can only watch.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 20, 2008 10:39 PM

gints only hope is to knock brady out of the game early.

the gints have the one thing that makes them one of the few teams with the ability to beat the pats: ability to pressure with only the front 4

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:41 PM

football is a game of momentum. at 0-3 the giants are done. finished. kaput.

But Gibby single handedly resurrected their season so I hope Coughlin sends him a thank you card.

this is worse then that time I had a spray fart in 7th grade art class.

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 10:41 PM

Amen TE...the best part about this is that the punk Shockey will miss it!!!! Him and his American Flag/ Eagle tattoo
Amen TE

Posted by: cej75024 | January 20, 2008 10:43 PM

i disagree. what happens early in the season has less bearing in post season success than how a team plays late. Want an example? look at the chargers who lost three straight to fall to 1-3. In any case, it's a pointless argument since there's no clear way to settle it

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:48 PM

johnw/RickyBobby, that comment is simply ridiculous!

Oh and by the way...Gibbs has retired...you need to find another whipping boy for next season.

Do you visit the Wizards blog? Is your name DCMan88?

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 10:54 PM

Does someone want to go out on a limb and tell us who the mystery guy is?

Posted by: songofroland | January 20, 2008 10:55 PM

hail,

I hear your point. You may even be right but I'm just really pissed off because I absolutely despise the Giants.

Level of Hate Rankings for Ricky Bobby:

1. Ravens
2. Giants
3. Eagles
4. Cowboys

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 10:55 PM

cowboys at 4?? Dude, cowboys always have to be a #1 on the hate-o-meter, do they not?

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:56 PM

Lisa,

Ha. I've posted on there a few times but I post under this name or Ricky Bobby.

Who should my whipping boy be for next year? Maybe it will be the mystery man everyone is talking about.

Oh, and did I see you call Daniel Snyder "Napolean" earlier in the day? There you go, girl! I knew you had it in you!

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 10:57 PM

bill belicheck?

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 10:57 PM

hail,

yeah, kind of weird, but when I was growing up the Skins/Giants rivalry was at its best. I also went to school with, and have tons of friends who are Ravens/Giants/Eagles fans. I can't stand listening to them all gloat when things go their way. I don't know very many people who are die hard Boys fans, plus they are 1,000 miles away so you don't have to hear about them as much.

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 11:01 PM

PDiddy,

You could be right, but I think McDaniels is a bit too raw to run his own ship. But, certainly a viable head coach candidate for the future.

If JLaC calls bull on Glazer's reporting of Mora receving an offer, who's to say the other part of his reporting is accurate in any case (i.e. the "mystery candidate")?

Posted by: hailbg | January 20, 2008 11:01 PM

Johnw/Ricky Bobby, if Snyder does not promote Williams ot head coach and blows up the coaching staff/team, he will be known as Napolean to me.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 11:03 PM

See Lisa, I knew you and I could agree on something...

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 11:07 PM

Jason, to which CBS post-game are you referring? Is this a recent post-game show? I haven't heard a thing from him.

Posted by: squid1 | January 20, 2008 11:12 PM

Although I can't stand the Giants since they are in our division, the main reason I cannot bear them is
(1) Eli Manning (enough said)
(2) Antonio Pierce - Gregg Williams pulled him out of obscurity on our bench and he became a star then ran off to NY - and never fails to diss the Skins and boast about how great the Giants are. Can't stand him.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 11:12 PM

Lisa picked the Giants about 3 months ago, so please check your egos at the door, guys.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 20, 2008 11:13 PM

Lisa,

We agree on something else. AP is a loud mouth jerk. I wanted to puke when I saw him pointing to his NFC championship hat after the game.

Posted by: johnw | January 20, 2008 11:14 PM

Now can we all just be mature and root for our fellow NFC East athletes, these Giants, to take down the Cloverfield, the AFC behemoth, the infection of perfection...the Pats.

F THE PATS

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 20, 2008 11:19 PM

SMACK, I would be fine if they just cancelled the Super Bowl since our choice is either (1) the abominable Patriots or (2)mumble mouth "I refuse to go to the Chargers" spoiled brat Eli Manning and arrogant Antonio Pierce.

Sooo disappointing.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 20, 2008 11:24 PM

Mystery Candidate Possibilities:

Mike Ditka
Don Shula
Buddy Ryan
Richie Kotite
Lou Holtz
Dan Reeves
Jimmy Johnson
Tom Flores
John Robinson
Bobby Ross
Sam Wysche
Jerry Glanville

Posted by: jgarrisn | January 20, 2008 11:26 PM

Admit it Lisa, you'll watch it. The draft thing was years ago. Forgive Eli. Root for Eli. It's what's best for us.

GGG will be the coach, Jason Campbell is good, and the Skins are ready to rocks and roll. The Cowboys are right there. If the Eaglets don't fall off too much (sorry adam) we could be in for 5 or so years of legendary NFC East play. That would get a huge boost from a dynasty-ending Giants win in the SB.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 20, 2008 11:38 PM

ugh....

lisa does get props for calling giants in preseason....cyndy gets resberries for laughing at giants early..

RB is right, we beat giants game three they aint in SB...team was fragile...i live in nyc so i know...but they aint fragile now....

oh well...

Posted by: chrislarry | January 20, 2008 11:43 PM

Redskins fans antagonism ratings

1. Cowboys
2. Cowboys
3. Cowboys
4. Cowboys
5. Eagles
6. Cowboys
7. Cowboys
8. Giants
9. Ravens
10. Cowboys
11. Cardinals (used to be in our division)
12. Patriots

From this chart alone, thus, you'd say we should root for the Pats. But no! If you factor in the overall loathing ratings applicable to all fans, not just Redskins fans antagonism ratings, then the Pats come in at #2, and the Giants at #7.

So it's logical to be pro-Giants for this one.

If you plan on watching NFL Films for the next 75 years, would you rather hear the term 'dynasty', or the term 'miracle'?

I vote for 'miracle', and for the chance to make that miracle eat its shorts next year.

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 20, 2008 11:59 PM

Hating on Cowboys now = wasted energy

Posted by: SMACK1 | January 21, 2008 12:02 AM

NFC East pride, and loathing of the Patriots, will make it easy for this Skins fan to root for the Giants. As for obsessing about game 3, I prefer to keep myself warm with memories of Game 14 when the Toddmeister helped mop the floor with the new NFC champions.

Posted by: jaypem | January 21, 2008 12:02 AM

That's like saying gravity is wasted energy, Smack.

Posted by: farstriker | January 21, 2008 12:06 AM

Ah, another week of getting to say, "It's not a Too-mah." Good times.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 21, 2008 12:18 AM

I was really hoping for Brett to go out a winner, not for Eli to go out a wiener.

How can you make a hate list for skins fans without the seahawks?

1. cowgirls
2. gints
3. eagles
4. seahawks
5. tampa bay

Posted by: billy6 | January 21, 2008 9:05 AM

Mora getting an offer. He was offered a ride home.

Keep in the front of your mind that anything you hear from the Fox Network didn't pass any journalistic standard. They just make crap up.

Posted by: erthdog | January 21, 2008 10:17 AM

From ProFootBall Talk:

On Friday, we caught wind of rumors that there's a mystery candidate for the head-coaching vacancy in Atlanta. Now, Jay Glazer of FOX reports that a mystery candidate has emerged in Washington.

In our view, the term "mystery candidate" is usually code for a college head coach who's hoping not to disrupt his recruiting effort if he doesn't get the job.

Glazer says that the Redskins' mystery candidate will be interviewed on Monday or Tuesday.

Also, Glazer reports that Seahawks assistant Jim Mora would have gotten the job if he had wanted it. Some have speculated that Mora withdrew his name from consideration after he learned that he wouldn't get the gig.

Posted by: i155133 | January 21, 2008 1:02 PM

That's the sight of Williams and the entire coaching staff twisting in the wind as Gibbs "advises."

Posted by: i155133 | January 21, 2008 1:05 PM

Post an H-Back!! We miss your gameday analysis.
