Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Fassel, Ryan and Zorn

All of my reporting leads to this trio topping the coaching staff. They have yet to finalize deals but are the top choices for the positions and league sources said the Redskins would like to announce the coaching moves en masse, rather than individually, and that could happen tomorrow.

Jim Fassel is expected to be named head coach, and the hold-up is negotiations with the Ravens regarding Rex Ryan. As I previously reported, contrary to other reports, the Ravens retain Ryan's coordinator rights and can block a lateral move. They appear to be doing that. The sides may reach an agreement, but Ravens ownership badly wants to keep Ryan, who the players love. Fassel and Ryan spoke as recently as last night sources said and Ryan interviewed with Snyder Sunday night, according to sources.

Zorn, as we were the first to report, interviewed for the offensive coordinator job. He is set to depart around 5:40 and if all goes well he would be the leading candidate to replace Al Saunders (with whatever fancy title they want to use).

Everyone is waiting to hammer the contract details out but barring a last second change of heart, disaster, whatever, this is how it's shaping up.

*UCK THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

almost makes you want to be a giants fan... their organization stuck with its coach through thick and thin.

Posted by: SETH.LEMASTER | January 23, 2008 4:36 PM

Earn my respect. I'll root for the team cause they are my team, but I want to see something.

Not thrilled, and stopping by Staples today for some more clipboards....

Posted by: redryan400 | January 23, 2008 4:38 PM

complete JOKE!

Posted by: gowen | January 23, 2008 4:38 PM

Why can't Snyder spend more time on his Six Flags park rides and quit blowing up the Skins every few years just for his kicks? Seriously, WTF?!?

Posted by: david | January 23, 2008 4:38 PM

Giant Douche....obviously.

Posted by: ralstondan | January 23, 2008 4:38 PM

prediction - look for vinnie to give a number 2 to the ravens for ryan

Posted by: bestmick1 | January 23, 2008 4:38 PM

A Turd Sandwich. At least a Giant Douche is hygienic.

"almost makes you want to be a giants fan... their organization stuck with its coach through thick and thin"

Um. Tell that to Fassel. He was gone one year removed from a Super Bowl appearance. Coughlin would have been gone if the Skins hadn't collapsed in Week 3.

Posted by: LiberalMike | January 23, 2008 4:39 PM

If Fassel is a one year placeholder until Cowher becomes available a year from now, why not simply keep GG? Would it be that hard for Vinnie and Gregg to get along? Seriously, I would love to be a fly on the wall at the Senior Bowl as the management and coaching staff from REAL football teams snicker at the joke that the Redskins have become.

Posted by: tkozikow | January 23, 2008 4:39 PM

Number 2 is right.

Posted by: Skinz | January 23, 2008 4:39 PM

I guess the meaning of stability has changed. I thought it meant keeping most of the same guys. Apparently it means wiping out the entire coaching staff and starting over. REAL STABLE SNYDER!!

Posted by: jdixon35 | January 23, 2008 4:39 PM

HELL to the Redskins!

disaster is right Jla

Posted by: kenneth920 | January 23, 2008 4:40 PM

I am not totally upset by this. I will be if we give the Ravens any draft picks!!!! I thought the Ravens were going to hire Rivera from San Diego. How does that affect this situation?

Posted by: billhildebrandt | January 23, 2008 4:40 PM

yep, not only are they screwing us on the coaches, but they're going to give away a draft pick to get ryan as well. the entire gibbs reign was a waste and a lie. snyder hasn't grown at all. this is an infant with money. so ridiculous. you think a lot of these players with huge contracts are going to want to renegotiate now?

Posted by: vjr9r | January 23, 2008 4:40 PM

good grief i cant root for the giants. i cant root for the pats! the superbowl is meaningless.

Posted by: SETH.LEMASTER | January 23, 2008 4:40 PM

Dan Snyder's definition of "stability" is meaningless.

I think a better analogy is, who's worse: Dan Snyder or George Lucas? They both raped my childhood.

Posted by: SETH.LEMASTER | January 23, 2008 4:41 PM

So will the cherry on top be the skins giving Baltimore our first round pick for Ryan?

Posted by: mtnskinsfan | January 23, 2008 4:41 PM

It's 2003 all over again.

Posted by: jvass | January 23, 2008 4:41 PM

To quote Barno, "Wow...just...wow"

I am someone who was never that hard on Snyder - he is first a fan and has made some "fan decisions" and not "owner decisions" in the past, in my opinion.

But right now, I am pissed - I think I feel betrayed by his whole continuity thing and while perhaps he has had the chance to step back from the emotions that go with this season and Gibbs' abrupt departure and make a strategic and the best move for the team, I just feel like his comments at the presser 2 weeks ago were nothing but lies and BS - it would have been best to say nothing - then I would not feel like I was being lied to - that and this secrecy crap makes it worse.

That said, I have been a fan since birth and am going into my second season with tickets, so I will stick by my team and weather the storm, as I did through Norv and Marty and Spurrier, and hope, hope, hope for the best.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 23, 2008 4:42 PM

I'm done with the Skins. At least I'll get to play more golf on Sundays now, and the courses are less crowded (maybe not for long).

Posted by: jj250 | January 23, 2008 4:42 PM

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????? Stability my ASS!

Posted by: herb | January 23, 2008 4:42 PM

So Rob Ryan is the hold up? And there are no OTHER defensive coordinator possibilities out there (that don't require draft choices?)?

Also, the Ryan boy from Oakland is the pirate, right? The Ravens one is just sort of big in the middle, right?

Posted by: dcsween | January 23, 2008 4:42 PM

I just don't get what Rex Ryan has in it for him to just become a d coordinator for another team.

I feel real bad for GG, but I also have to wonder how he could not get this job, he must have really not tried to get along very hard with Vinny.

Posted by: Jwolff03 | January 23, 2008 4:42 PM

Continuity: An uninterrupted succession or flow.

Dan was being truthful, what we are getting is continuity; we assumed he meant continuity with the Gibbs approach. After that brief interlude, we now return you to our uninterrupted succession of revolving door head coaches and continuous changes in direction.

Posted by: carver9 | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

If this is true we'd better start a suicide watch for Barno....

He's really stuck his neck out in his self-appointed role of "defender of 'Mr' Snyder ".

Posted by: Redcoat | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

The pick to the Ravens will be the straw that broke the camels back for me. Thats just being stupid, and going back to the year 2000.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

I HATE SNYDER

This is a sad day so much for any kind of continuity.

Posted by: SAK2 | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

This could go down as one of the absolute worst things the Danny has ever orchestrated...easily trumping the Jeff George debacle.

To blow up the nucleus of a great team in the making for Jim fing Fassel? Gibbs laid a strong foundation, the blueprint for success was in place and Synder burned the whole thing down in three weeks. Pathetic.

Posted by: jeffhayes | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

I am not sure which is making my stomach turn more...

1. My Apple stock results today
2. The thought of this new coaching staff

Posted by: isnadd | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

Vinny will trade the 1st or 2nd for Ryan, maybe both picks! What a disaster! F U SNYDER, SELL THE TEAM!!!!!!

Posted by: redryan400 | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

I'll believe it when I see it...

Posted by: barno | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

Jack Kent Cook is probably turning in his grave. What have we become?

Posted by: scampbell1975 | January 23, 2008 4:43 PM

INSTEAD of Fassel, Ryan & Zorn! I've got and idea...hell why don't we bring in Vinny for the HC job, hire Tom Cruise as the the DC, and bring in the dancing Six Flags guy as the OC. Since we're already the laughing stock of the NFL it couldn't get any worse and at least it would be funny as hell!

This is complete BS!!!!

Posted by: mamarsha34 | January 23, 2008 4:44 PM

So is Grilliams out of a job after coaching the D to a top ten finish three of four years? Wow, that's all I got to say.

Posted by: ga8085 | January 23, 2008 4:44 PM

I am at a loss. What is Snyder thinking? What is Gibbs saying to him? Is Snyder simply not listening to Gibbs' advice?

I'm so confused!

Posted by: psummers | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

Snyder is a liar....this is a sham and travesty.

How could Gibbs stand by and watch this happen to a team he developed and made stable??????

Anyone else want to join me in picketing Redskins Park?

Posted by: Lisa | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

Posted by: dcsween | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

"The Redskin's are expected to name Jim Fassil as their 27th Head Coach, with Jim Zorn as the new Offensive Coordinator. The Redskins and Ravens have agreed on the terms of a deal to allow the Redskins to hire Rex Ryan as the Defensive Coordinator, with the Redskins sending the Raven's the Redskin's 2nd round draft pick in 2008 and their 1st and 3rd round draft picks in 2009.

John Harbaugh, the Ravens new Head Coach, is expected to offer the now vacant Defensive Coordinator job to Gregg Williams."

Okay - not a real press release, but would anyone be surprised if it was?

First Day Picks? We don't need no stinkin first day picks . . .

Posted by: RedBee | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

Is it possible that we trade Receiver, The for the DC from baltimore that would be a good deal

Posted by: Hawkeye | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

There is going to be more changes on the offense as the new regime runs the west coast. Ryan runs the same D as Williams

Posted by: mdvj | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

And now the Redskins fans will suffer the same fate as the Six Flags shareholders.

Posted by: jklaw | January 23, 2008 4:45 PM

We just better not F away any draft picks for Rex Ryan.... Dan you've got the money to give them... Just don't screw away anymore picks....

I will F'n scream...

Apparently GG is his backup plan if this doesn't all workout. If he's so sold on Fassel as the HC why not announce him and figure out the rest later....

Is this the new way you hire a HC...

First Jerry Jones and now Danny trying to hir the complete package at once...

Posted by: sams3 | January 23, 2008 4:46 PM

If the Ravens won't release Ryan, would they consider trading him for Williams?

Posted by: dcsween | January 23, 2008 4:46 PM

Posted by: COskins | January 23, 2008 4:46 PM

Can't wait to see Joe's statement in response to these hirings, if they are indeed true. Will he sell Snyder out or sell out GG? If Snyder actually had Gibbs believing all the hogwash at his presser, Gibbs should be embarrassed to remain part of the organization-especially as a specail consultant to Danny.

Posted by: dave197391 | January 23, 2008 4:47 PM

actually, the only positive here is to hear what Joe Gibbs has to say.

Jason, I expect you to track down Gibbs like a fat woman looking for a Krispy Kreme and get his take on the "post Gibbs" era.

Also, I can't wait to hear what the players have to say....

Posted by: isnadd | January 23, 2008 4:47 PM

I have been a life long fan and a ticket holder for 5 years. If Snyder goes through with this, I think I will stay a fan, but give up the tickets and not purchace any additional Redskins related merch for a long time. I thought Snyder had grown up a little...

Posted by: mack1 | January 23, 2008 4:48 PM

I don't know why everyone is getting upset, after all, management has a plan and they know what they're doing

Posted by: WalkTheLine | January 23, 2008 4:48 PM

Alrighty, now comes the PR and spin part. Let's write the Rude Q&A for this announcement...

Q: You spoke previously about maintaining continuity, yet you've replaced the top three coaches on the team. What changed over the last two weeks?

Q: What about Jim Fassel was attractive to you in selecting him over the other candidates?

Q: What are your expectations for the team next season?

Q: Are you worried that asking Jason Campbell to learn his third NFL system in four seasons could possibly stunt his growth into an elite quarterback?

Q: You're faced with some tough personnel decisions on offense, with an aging and injured offensive line and several role players coming off injury riddled seasons. Are there any specific areas on offense that you'd prefer to focus as you enter this season?

Q: Conversely, on defense, you've developed several younger players over the last four years, but two important ones, Rocky McIntosh and Carlos Rogers, are coming off serious knee injuries. With history suggesting that most players don't fully recover from such injuries for 18 months, how will you approach personnel decisions on defense?

Q: Are Johnny Rockets Chili Cheese Fries truly the best thing on the planet?

Posted by: PDiddy | January 23, 2008 4:49 PM

By continuity he meant continously poor decision making

Posted by: jklaw | January 23, 2008 4:49 PM

will the Skins have to give up a pick to get Rex Ryan? Will Fassel be able to keep the locker room together? Is Zorn the right guy to help Campbell develop?

These are just some of the questions that I will no longer care about if this rumor proves to be true

Posted by: zcezcest1 | January 23, 2008 4:49 PM

Your an idiot, Ryan does not run the same defense. It is a completely different scheme. Which we need are draft picks for and a lot of time to learn.

Posted by: billhildebrandt | January 23, 2008 4:49 PM

So we're going West Coast offense and a 3/4 defense. A total overhaul indeed! Maybe Danny Boy is getting the team setup for Cowher's return to coaching next year.

My earlier message was not serious, but said in jest. My sarcasm tags were left out.

Posted by: WalkTheLine | January 23, 2008 4:50 PM

well i suppose the one good thing to come of this, will be that they will start building through the draft -- because NO FREE AGENT IN THEIR RIGHT MIND will want to work for Peter Angelos....err...I mean Dan Snyder...who will do whatever it takes to maintain CONTROL.....not stability. this is BS. I'm letting my season tickets go, he's made me hate my childhood obsession for so many overpriced reasons, but this is too far!

sams3 - sarcasm, its called sarcasm.

It's time to harness the power of jasno's blog and flood the Redskins with angry emails. Will it change anything? No, but it might make you feel better. I just fired off a beauty of an anti-Snyder rant and I actually feel a little better up here. Come on folks, give it shot. Let the voices of the fans be heard!

Posted by: herb | January 23, 2008 4:52 PM

I called it first:

Let's not overestimate Vinnie. There's no reason he couldn't throw a few draft picks Baltimore's way to pry loose Rex Ryan.

Posted by: carver9 | January 23, 2008 11:04 AM

Posted by: carver9 | January 23, 2008 4:52 PM

Ryan is a good football guy. In 2 years he will be a head coach. He is that good. Zorn is a good offensive guy. Fasell is suspect. Sean Payton was the play caller for the Giants. I dont get this. If Greg Williams got the job with Zorn that would be a good duo. And so would Zorn And Ryan and we are a 3-4 if this happens.
But Fassel did go to the Super bowl. This is a Vinny Hire!

Posted by: tjzukoski | January 23, 2008 4:52 PM

This was not a team on the verge of greatness this was an OK team with alot of high priced veterans. Nothing Willams has done should make any of you think this team would be any better next year with him as coach and now we no AS would be gone no matter who got the job so JC would be learning a new offense anyway. The last 4 years have not been that great so why continue you remember we were not that good after we went to the playoffs last time (6-10) the next year.

sams3, good players are still good players but a good player in a 3-4 may only be an average player in a 4-3 due to different skill sets and responsibilities. Schemes mean a lot and the schemes have to fit the players.

Posted by: sams3 | January 23, 2008 04:49 PM

What makes snyder know more about football than anybody here? Did he play in college? Was he riding the bench in the NFL? Did he study under Bill Walsh?

Or is it because he was able to purchase the most expensive toy all of us fantasize about having? Sorry, but just because he owns the redskins doesn't make him know more about football than anyone else here.

Posted by: psps23 | January 23, 2008 4:53 PM

What a joke. This hurts, sucks, and why would anyone renew their season tickets...

Posted by: mmeeskins | January 23, 2008 4:54 PM

This team has become a complete waste of my time.

Completely overhauling a playoff team's coaching staff? Are you kidding me? How many coaches has SOUP had now?

Snyder is a laughingstock and he's turned the team into one as well.

HATE SNYDER.

Posted by: jcarter999 | January 23, 2008 4:54 PM

I actually like Rex Ryan but he aint worth giving up picks for. No coach is. It aint like there's a dearth of good coaches out there anyway.

I gotta thank Jasno for giving us this news in peices and dragging this out. Because I might have choked on my own vomit had this been a "Joe Gibbs" surprise. At least this way we got prepared for the news over a couple days time.

Posted by: sheidt99 | January 23, 2008 4:54 PM

folks forget about snyder for a minute let me tell you this much if Jack Kent Cooke made up a will to include the skins to his sun John and left him better financially this team would have never been on sale in the first place and we would have Never heard of Dan Snyder bottom line is that when Jack Kent Cooke died back in 97 my guess is that he didn't see his son john as much of a owner to carry the Cooke Family tradition to bring a winning team and if the person who tried to buy the skins before Snyder was set up better financially the skins wouldn't be in this mess.

Posted by: argh | January 23, 2008 4:55 PM

Maybe they can't work with GWilliams. Fine. I get that. But why Fassel? I'm hoping it will work out, I really am. But why him? What's wrong with some of the up-and-coming coordinators?

I don't get it.

Snyder doesn't have a clue and he's acting like a spoiled child by going back to his pick before Gibbs, as if Gibbs hadn't been there.

Posted by: lordtwang | January 23, 2008 4:55 PM

This is a travesty. Is there any way to successfully conduct a mutiny? Snyder has no sense of public relations, not to mention long-term strategic vision. He has a successful, playoff-tested coaching staff and roster, yet he is willing, even in the face of extreme public and fan opposition, to blow it all up and literally patch together a staff that has not cohesion, history, or commonality. He needs to read this blog, every thread and every entry. What a nightmare for this team and its loyal fans.

Posted by: sams3 | January 23, 2008 04:46 PM

I am with you sams3. We have been a decent team the last couple of years and played soem really exciting games but what makes any of us think that Flapjacks had the plan to take us over the top from decent to good. I am not defending either but I do believe that some new faces are a good thing. Let me make this clear it can't be a win now situation they must look at the long term side of things.

Posted by: Hawkeye | January 23, 2008 4:56 PM

KJ, vote with your feet. I think a lot of ticket holders will also.

Its your hard earned money. If you don't respect the team/owner, don't give him the $$$.

Its not about growing up, Sams3 -- its about doing what you feel is right.

Jim Fassel? Blech!

Posted by: taupecat | January 23, 2008 4:56 PM

I am very sad today, and I feel betrayed by the organization that I fell in love with as a child. Things will never change with Dan as the head, and it's very sad that he did not learn anything at all from such a great man and coach as Joe Gibbs. Some of you on here are joking that Tom Cruise should be the new coach, but in all seriousness I don't know how we as fans can stand by and let a scientologist (either actually, or in the making by the looks of things) run our beloved Redskins. I wish there was something we could do!

Posted by: amychris74 | January 23, 2008 4:57 PM

Glass is still half full Skins Nation...new coach, new era...why not improve on mediocrity? Continuity is great...if you're continuing greatness, which we haven't been in 15 years. Who knows what is to come? The players will follow suit soon enough, they get paid to.

Pie rocks! I'm still going to get pie and ice cream on the way home. Unfortunately, I've been overridden in my choice for dinner. We are having chinese per the orders of my 3 yr old son. My wife and I are well aware of who runs our house.

Get a grip. Everybody acts like its life and death. Fassel is a terrific coach, and will probably be pretty good for the team. He's going to have to make a lot of compromises anyway -- with the salary cap situation in DC, there's only so much he can blow the roster up (or else he'd have to have 12 undrafted rookies on the team). Plus, look on the bright side -- even if they give up some high picks for Ryan, Snyder would probably blow them anyway.

Posted by: groundhogdayguy | January 23, 2008 4:58 PM

Good point p00p. That is all I can hope for!

Posted by: SmallPen15 | January 23, 2008 4:58 PM

I can picture it now, Lil Danny Snyder, pushing down the lever on the ceremonial explosion detonator as the Team Joe Gibbs 2.0 built crumbles to the ground.

THE NAME ASHBURN HAS NEVER BEEN SO FITTING.

BURNED TO THE GROUND.

Posted by: the_squire | January 23, 2008 4:59 PM

I have to reserve judgement until I see what happens. Not that my opinion counts, but I am fine with this move if:

#1: We don't lose anymore than Brandon Lloyd or a 6th round draft pick for Rex Ryan.

#2: Fossil doesn't play that Conservative game he played when we used to kick the hell out of the Giants year in and year out.

#3: We don't have a free spending, overpriced free agency spree like pre-Gibbs 2.

Bottom line, our offense is in a much better position than Baltimore's when Fossil had his stint there. Ryan is a bad A$$ offensive Coordinator. I think give it some time, and this may be a good move.

Posted by: kmckinty | January 23, 2008 4:59 PM

If the Ravens are demanding picks for Ryan then Snyder should just step back and find another DC. Ron Rivera's already been mentioned as someone out there who's qualified. He's a position coach so going to DC would not be a lateral move. I can live with the coaching changes (for the time being) but a return to throwing away draft choices just pisses me off.

Posted by: mtnskinsfan | January 23, 2008 5:00 PM

Hawkeye, you are a smart man. If it took the death of a teamate and every trick a hall of fame coach knew to motivate these playoff runs what makes anyone believe man tats could come close to doing this?

It's not like the skins were sitting pretty every year. They had to fight and claw for a spot in both playoff appearacnes.

Posted by: sams3 | January 23, 2008 5:00 PM

Daniel Snyder is the anti-Christ and Vinny Cerrato is his bit'che boy!! This four foot tall punk should be thrown out of DC. Sadly, he has destroyed a once proud franchise, for what, a coach that LOST one freaking Superbowl? Bill Callahan lost one too, why wasn't he interviewed? FASSEL COULDN'T EVEN GET THE OC JOB IN KC. Just think, if Marty was never fired, Vinny "Lap Dog" Cerrato would still be working at the DQ.

Posted by: duh2mag | January 23, 2008 5:00 PM

Posted by: jimwell | January 23, 2008 5:00 PM

Maybe I have the rankings wrong, but is there any word on how many draft picks it's going to cost to dump the DC of the 6th ranked defense to hire the DC of the 9th ranked defense?

Posted by: mack1 | January 23, 2008 5:01 PM

J Cambell to Bmore for Ryan and Zorn comes in as a lefty OC to bring Brunell back up to speed. Way to go Snyda.

Posted by: steviej1964 | January 23, 2008 5:01 PM

Oh man, I can't wait until George Michael asks Mr. Snyder the really tough questions about continuity in their next interview! Oh...umm yeah...nevermind.

"it is my party, and you can cry if you want to" - Snyder.

I say. Yes it is. I have no choice but to put up with you me Lord. Although, I do wish you could take your team and join your buddy Gibbs out of town.

Posted by: groundhogdayguy | January 23, 2008 5:02 PM

All the players wanted Williams, continuity, blah, blah, blah. I am so thankful the Wizards are doing well and the Caps have turned the corner. Between them and the Nationals I have enough to keep me occupied that I can relegate the Skins to second fiddle. I can't believe it's come to that, but Danny had nothing to lose by giving Williams a chance and he blew it. I hope he hears the laughter of the rest of the league. The players will, and how does an organization expect to win when that happens?

Posted by: larjan2004 | January 23, 2008 5:02 PM

In all seriousness, I don't think Snyder realizes the backlash he's about to face. I have NEVER seen this many megative posts about anything he's ever done ... not Jeff George, not Deion ... nothing! Sad thing is, Joe Gibbs wasted 4 years of his life trying to show this idiot the ropes. Joe, thanks for what you did ... even though our record wasn't great in your second go-around, we were a respected franchise again for 4 years. We may never see that again with Mr. Johnny Rockets in charge.

Posted by: jj250 | January 23, 2008 5:03 PM

Everyone relax...this may not be the worst thing ever, lets dissect this:

D: Rex Ryan is as good a defensive coach as Gregg Williams, and while I love Gregg and think he absolutely deserves a chance to be the head coach, on D I think this is a push

O: Many scouts have said that Al Saunders offense does not bring out JC's best strengths (e.g. Strong arm and athleticism)...Fassel has a great history with QBs (John Elway and Phil Simms) and Zorn has done extremely well with Hassleback..this could work out for the better on O

Team: This year was like no other year ever for an NFL team, and they rallied around a great set of coaches, but now that it is a new year, moving on may be what's best for the team, fresh faces, ideas, and most importantly not dwelling on the past and trying to match last season's emotion

this is all assuming we dont give up a pick for rex ryan....

Posted by: 06bbl | January 23, 2008 5:03 PM

I hate Dan Snyder. He has ruined this franchise. We will never be a consistent winner with him owning the team. He refuses to hire a GM and acknowledge that Vinny Cerrato is an incompetent, bug-eyed loser. Jim Fassel? Are you kidding?

Posted by: jknobla | January 23, 2008 5:03 PM

Why did Lucas rape your childhood? I am very interested in knowing. He took too long to come out wit hthe prequels?

Also....

STOP THE MADNESS! STOP THE MADNESS....

I still have a hold of the Williams ship. If Williams is thrown form the Plank, we still have Blache and Gray who run the same exact defense. So, we win regardless. I would feel bad for Williams though. He appeared to love those guys on defense. Especially Sean Taylor....

STOP THE MADNESS.

Posted by: 4thFloor | January 23, 2008 5:03 PM

Gah...I hope that SNYDER comes to his senses and chooses to keep Williams....

Granted we were going to have offensive changes because I didn't really expect those loyal to Gibbs to stay but this whole blowup of the organization with a Jim Fassel.....

Snyder likes Sexy...how the hell is Fassel sexy??

CHOOSE STABILITY FOR CHRISSAKES!!! Give Williams a chance!!!

Give Campbell some friggin' stability!!!

Posted by: opita | January 23, 2008 5:05 PM

The Skins made the playoffs twice in the last 3 seasons. Which is as much success as Danny has had in his entire tenure.

And it was a team that was respected. For the ONLY time in Snyder's tenure.

So he takes the best thing he has ever had and blows it up to get Jim Fassel !!!!!!! What a crock.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | January 23, 2008 5:05 PM

All I can say is why? Just when everything starts to come together we blow it up.. If there is one thing an emerging QB needs is stability. Do you think bringing in a new O-Coordinator is going to help Campbell's development? I just lost a lot of respect for Dan Snyder.

Ah, Scientology. So many fish, such a small barrel.

Posted by: JohninMpls | January 23, 2008 5:07 PM

Gregg Williams, Rex Ryan, and the Pirate are from the same coaching tree - Buddy Ryan.

Posted by: Markin21132 | January 23, 2008 5:07 PM

Lucas raped our childhoods because the prequels sucked. Not that the Ewoks will go down in history as the greatest possible choice, mind you. The prequels had a really good shot at being great. But like "Mr." Snyder's tenure in charge of the 'Skins, Lucas took something that should be pretty simple (the father/son and path to darkness story arcs) and completely F'ed it up.

I do like Jim Zorn, though. He's a great guy, and it's awesome to see him get a shot at the big time. Totally class act. Folks in DC are going to love him.

Posted by: PDiddy | January 23, 2008 5:07 PM

This is ridiculous! I can't imagine a single Redskins player or fan that is happy about this. Way to go, Danny!

Posted by: Carlton83 | January 23, 2008 5:07 PM

Gibbs doesn't care what stupid move Snyder makes. He quit so why should he care. Will Snyder have the guts to answer many tough questions on why he blew up the team again. Gibbs got his 20 million for 3 playoff games and is now sitting pretty back at Nascar.

It is tough to be a fan of this team.

Posted by: dhoran60 | January 23, 2008 5:08 PM

I hear Arena Stage is putting on the Mikado with Campbell, Collins, and Brunell as the 3 little maids from school and Zorn as the executioner. And Vinny as the daughter-in-law elect.

Posted by: groundhogdayguy | January 23, 2008 5:08 PM

NEW TEAM WANTED

Wanted: New NFL Team to cheer for. Long Term Relationship Wanted or until Dan Snyder dies or sells the team.

This Owner does not know the fans of the Redskins......

Now would be a good time to changed the name of the team I suspect a few fans will leave so it will no longer be the Redskins. Instead from now on the team in Washington will be know as the Dannies

I've dome 40+ years as a total fan. Its been the only 'addiction' I had my entire life. And yet, it just seems like it won't be that hard to walk away.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | January 23, 2008 5:10 PM

At first I was completely against this completely. The more I think about it, the more I am okay with it. I think that the offense over the last few years has been a weak point. We have not utilized our talent the way we should. Portis is not a 3.6 ypc back and if they can better utilize him, it will no doubt open up the passing game. As for the defense, same story...we HAVE NOT utilized our talent. Sean Taylor (RIP) was not fully utilized until this season and look how that turned out. Rocky last season sitting the bench while Holdmand played? As for continuity, I remember thinking over the last few years that this is the most inconsistent team in the NFL. Maybe keeping the coaches and systems that produced such incosistency would have been a mistake. I know continuity was the key word of the press conference, but player have to play. I don't believe that the players in New England would have a say in any of their processes. I'm not a Snyder apologist, but I don't think this is the worst thing that could happen.

Posted by: rbruce | January 23, 2008 5:10 PM

Hope all the KoolAide Brigades show up to put a spin on this abject humiliation of the players, coaches and fans.

Posted by: i155133 | January 23, 2008 5:10 PM

Of course if anybody was really serious about their dislike of Dan Snyder they would turn off their TV's, radios and stop going to games. As long as the 'Skins are profitable, Snyder will continue to treat 'Skins as a source of revenue.

Boycott the 'Skins is the only way to get rid of Snyder's irritating qualities.

Posted by: atidwell | January 23, 2008 5:11 PM

Dudes and dudettes - You have missed the obvious. We have TOM CRUISE on our side. The entire power of L. Ron Hubbard's Church is behind us and they're DOERS not talkers and that means we're about to win 10 SUPER BOWLS in 1 year!

(Is it time for us to pie Danny in the face yet?)

Posted by: sheidt99 | January 23, 2008 5:11 PM

I have reconsidered and think we are being way too hard on Snyder. I mean, look how successful the Orioles have been with Angelos...can't we hope for the same here?

Posted by: isnadd | January 23, 2008 5:12 PM

Dan Snyder Speaks:

"Fans, I said the word continuity, and well, nothing has changed since I bought this piggy bank. Pretty consistent if you ask me."

True.

Posted by: the_squire | January 23, 2008 5:12 PM

Fellow Skins fans and Snyder bashers... I am with you. I do not believe this for one minute, but it appears to be happening... and all I can say is Snyder runs his team like an amusement park.
He's a jerk, pompous and doesn't listen to his team. He's alienated them and he's alienated his fans.
I think if the Skins do not make the playoffs -- and win a game in the playoffs -- then this move will be a travesty and the fan base will trickle away.
I am sick and tired of all of this baby talk around "Campbell's development." We approach this as if he's some science project or something. This is pathetic.
What we had at the end of last year was starting to work. The team liked it and I think Campbell and Collins would have worked well together.

I think Snyder needs to take some of Cruise's anti-depressants!!

Not that the Ewoks will go down in history as the greatest possible choice, mind you.

Diddy, I beg to differ. The Ewoks were pretty brilliant. I mean, what foresight they had to have all of those logs already cut and piled, suspended, and so forth, on the off chance that they ever needed to overcome a far superior force with primitive technology.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 23, 2008 5:14 PM

i'm all for a new coaching staff, but not this one. i think the west coast offense is completely wrong for a player like campbell. his best attribute is his down-field arm, and his worst is his short touch passing. west coast is all about his worst ability.

i admit i know little about ryan, because i hate watching the ravens. but if his defenses are anything like when marvin lewis was here, i'd rather pass. i prefer attacking, blitzing defenses, not read & react.

and i am totally not sold on fassel. if ryan was that close to 3 HC jobs, why not give him the job, bring in zorn, and forget fassel. we also wouldn't have to give the ravens anything.

i still would've preferred grimm, mora or schwartz...

I wonder if all the NE Patriots fans were saying the same thing when Bill Belichick became coach. So Gregg and Fassel are both retreads. Not necessarily a bad thing. and the offense hasn't been good under AS. and the D has overachieved this year.

but Zorn coming from a West Coast offense team...what implications does that really mean?

Posted by: tenniz | January 23, 2008 5:15 PM

"HUNTERSVILLE, N.C., Jan. 22 -- Two weeks after resigning as coach of the Washington Redskins, Joe Gibbs is back in the thick of NASCAR, looking well-rested, rejuvenated and ready, it appears, to throw himself into an arena that's as fiercely competitive as the one he just left." - Washington Post.

So much for family and dying grandson.

"As I've reflected back on it, I think it was perfect timing for me," said Gibbs, whose teams went 31-36 during his second stint, including the playoffs. "Obviously you'd like to finish things in Washington with a championship. But I think we have things going in the right direction, going to the playoffs two of the last three years. I'm excited about the Redskins. They've got a great group there. And hopefully there will be a lot of stability in what happens up there." - WashingtonPost

What a bunch of crap.

I agree with this statement fully. I was never convinced that Al's 700 pages did anything for Campbell. I still think that Campbell is the future so now you need to get those new coaches working on a plan that fits what we have already not try to plug people into a plan. Just look at GG he ahd to modifiy the plan for defense so what makes us think that you don't need to do the same thing for the offense. I think that we can still improve and do better. We just need more than next year to see if it works. By the way I agree with you Sams3 there is still a lot of work to be done to make us yearly contenders not end of season pushes to get there but a legit shot at the playoffs and most of that starts with home games in the playoffs.

Don't worry, you'll be able to get tickets again at a later date. The waiting list is a lot shorter than it's ever been. Trust me on this one!

A decade ago, I was working for a biz and doing a great job. Had been there since its early days and was very attached to the people and company. Had some nice stock, etc.

Then CEO hires a new SR VP who decides to make a power statement and I'm the target. Two months later, I walked out. The emotional attachment. I left with friendships intact, but the emotional connection to the company had mostly gone.

That is what Danny is doing to my attachment to the Redskins. For whatever reason, I feel he has disrespected me. Apparently, I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I won't be the only one to walk away from this team.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | January 23, 2008 5:19 PM

Gibb's reputation will be tarnished if he continues to make comments about "continuity" in Washington.

He knew the culture and failed. Time to exit rather than grimace through another season. He also had comments to the effect that his family knew football was secondary to racing, which he wanted to keep going as long as possible.

Home is where the heart is.

Posted by: i155133 | January 23, 2008 5:19 PM

This is the worst case scenario-blowing up the entire coaching staff to start over with an older(58) re-tread head coach. I wouldn't have been any happier with Cower, all these guys are the same to me. Older coaches like Fassel and Cower have a system that they will blindly stick to regardless of the strengths and weaknesses of the players already here. This will mean a year of mediocre play, trying to fit square pegs into round holes(just like 2004 Gibbs). That will be followed by an offseason of over-spending in free-agency in an attempt to find players that better fit the new coaches system(please stop me if any of this sounds familier). If the Redskins blow-up the staff to this degree, we will be looking at another multi-year rebuilding process and the 4 years under St. Joe would have been completely pointless. I therefore pledge to keep my tickets(Synder will figure it out or leave someday) and promise not give the Redskins another dollar of my money. This means no jerseys, no hats, no beer or food at the games etc. If enough people protest in this manner, maybe we can get someones attention. (or maybe I just naive)

Posted by: cbulow99 | January 23, 2008 5:20 PM

...and by the way, Norv's record was worse than the the most recent regime, yet we gave him 7 years of stability! His first season (3-13) was worse than Petibon's (4-12).... What makes other people's coaches som much more damn special than our own?

They say the most precious gift is that of time. Tht being so, I guess I should thank Dan Snyder. He has given me 3-4 hours for 16-19 Sundays, and relieved me of the need to incessantly check the internet for Redskins news.

I am done.

Posted by: westme | January 23, 2008 5:22 PM

If Danny give the Ravens any draft pick....even a 5th rounder or whatever for Rex Ryan he's a douche.

Ryan will be interviewing for Head Coaching position with some other team next year...ala marvin "1 year as DC" for Danny Lewis

Posted by: mmz114 | January 23, 2008 5:22 PM

I cannot wait until this time next year to see what you people (who call urselves fans) have to say.

Posted by: lilagram | January 23, 2008 5:22 PM

So, Atlanta should make out like a bandit. They can pick up Grilliams or Saunders.

Posted by: _Stumped_ | January 23, 2008 5:23 PM

I have nothing left to say. This is a TOTAL DISASTER. Snyder has fully alienated all the fans. I hope he knows he is the laughingstock of the NFL. I honestly dont know what else to say. I feel like somebody just broke my heart

Posted by: SeanTay77 | January 23, 2008 5:24 PM

I am still (foolishly) holding out hope that this is but a cruel smokescreen orchestrated by Danny. If and when it turns out to be true, I will vow to finally give up on the 'Skins and not renew my season tickets. But I know that once the draft comes 'round, I will relent and give in again like some poor abused spouse. Such is the plight of a Redskin fan.

Posted by: norkus123 | January 23, 2008 5:24 PM

I am going to try my God's honest best to turn in my Club Level seats. I am so tired of financing Danny and Vinny's team. They have run this franchise into the ground.

I will not spend another dime on this god-forsaken team while those two chimps are running the show.

Posted by: zap123 | January 23, 2008 5:25 PM

Something tells me there will be a sudden influx of Capitals season ticket holders once the dust settles.

No Sunday ticket for me, and certainly no Sundays wasted watching Washington come up with new ways to give games away.

Posted by: null | January 23, 2008 5:25 PM

This is about respect. The 2007 Redskins earned respect. No other team in the Snyder era has had this level of respect.

If the owner wants to blow it up for a very good reason, I can see that. Jim Fassel is not close to a good reason.

Snyder and his puppet Vinny have done it this time. I've never seen so many pissed off Redskins fan. Those twits didn't learn ANYTHING from Gibbs. For example, why is SNYDER interviewing for Offensive coordinator? Doesn't the HEAD COACH do that?

He is now the GM and is a proven failer. Fassel is an no worse then Norv we will win next year but after that who knows.

I don't see a superbowl until 2026. We might as well be Caps fans. I though Gibbs had learned Snyder something. If any one out there has a 'condition' you could... no I can't condon thae.

Posted by: sams3 | January 23, 2008 04:51 PM

Yeah, tell that to Andre Carter and see what he thinks. The only possible decent outcome I see from this is if they still go with Grilliams as head coach and Zorn as OC. Why overhaul the defense when it was one of the best? I'm sorry, I tried to be optimistic, but this sucks.

Snydato is, pardon me, retarded.

This "once proud" franchise is an absolute abortion. You can forget building on last season. See you in the playoffs, say, 2020 ?? What happens to gregg, Al and the rest or do we have a 50+ coaching staff? What a joke !

Posted by: aginsburg | January 23, 2008 5:27 PM

Vinny, Fassel, Ryan, Zorn, etc. had better do well and soon. The NFC East is going to be a beatch next year with Eli going to the SB and likely gaining uber-confidence, the cowboys coming off a 13-3 season and the eagles with a healthy McNabb. If they don't then the only pie being served around Ashburn may be humble pie.

Exactly. Supposedly Dan Snyder is great friends with Biscotti. Lets see how Biscotti handles this.....OH, THAT'S RIGHT. Steve Biscotti won't be handling the compensation for Ryan. That would be handled by their GENERAL MANAGER Ozzie Newsome.

Ozzie Newsome - 1
Vinny Cerrato - 0

Bottom line we don't know what happened. Maybe GG interviewed himself out of a job. Snyder has direspected no one. He gave GG 4 interviews.
Maybe GG wanted to blow up the offensive roster.
Maybe GG wanted more control over the roster.
Maybe GG didn't have a clue as to who he wanted to run the offense since it seems apparent that AS was out.
Maybe Snyder, after talking with some of the leading candidates throughout the league and having four years of dealing with a HOF FC just felt that GG was a step backward.
Consistency for consistency's sake is a bad move

Dan Snyder does not care what the fans think or want. This is his team and he's going to prove it. He knows more than anyone else; so he doesn't have to listen to anyone, including his idol Joe Gibbs. The only way to make his change is to hurt him in his wallet. We need to boycott everything he owns...Redskins, Six Flags, Johnny Rocketts, etc. Don't go to the games. Don't buy the jersey's. Don't give him a dime of our money.

Posted by: Jeb_Brown | January 23, 2008 5:34 PM

On Continuity:

I personally believe that the Snyder/Cerrato are unable to do so
because uh some uh people out there in our Redskins nation don't have maps
and uh I believe that our fans like such as in U.S. America and uh the- the Northwest America everywhere like such as and I believe that they should uh
our Snyder/Cerrato over here in the Redskins Park should help the Redskins or- or- should help continuity and should help the Gregg Williams and the other U.S. American coaches so we will be able to build up our continuity. ((for our fans))

Posted by: thusler | January 23, 2008 5:35 PM

I included this link in my previous post, but I think it warrants mentioning again since some readers were confused about Ryan's contract status. From The Sun's Jamison Hensley:

A team official explained that the Ravens' coaching staff was "released" but not fired. That means the coaches could look for other jobs, but they could remain with the team if the new coach wants them. Because Ryan is under contract for another year, the Ravens could block him from taking another defensive coordinator job under NFL rules. They couldn't stop him from becoming a head coach, so Ryan would be free to leave if he gets the Falcons' job.

Either way - whether the staff stays or goes - the damage is done - Snydratto has permanently alienated a great staff and ripped the spirit right out of the entire team. Why would anyone want to play or coach for this clown?

If this indeed turns out to be true, it's a sad day I think for all that Joe Gibbs had done for the team.

Now, it sucks that Snyder has complete say in this; but it's his right as the owner. Is there any way can influence him to sell the team? Perhaps, each season ticket holder boycotts 2 home games of the year and reduces merchandise purchases. That would mean that the Skins revenue would go down by about 25% not accounting for revenue sharing...

Also, I'm thinking hostile takeover and an ability to run the team the same way the Packers are run; by a municipality. Then, you select a GM to run the team and he selects the coach, who selects the staff, etc.

Posted by: hailbg | January 23, 2008 5:39 PM

oooh boy that would be great if the Ravens get some picks for Rex!!

Angelos is still worse than Danny...but not by much...the skins just spent two years learning Al's system and now he's gone..for Jim Fassel..lol..that makes no sense.

Posted by: jsedelman22 | January 23, 2008 5:39 PM

I sincerely hope that this report isn't true. It doesn't make since to destroy the continuity of the team, especially, since they've made the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years. Why doesn't Coach Gibbs speak out about this? This is his team that's left behind. Even though GW had it tough in Buffalo, his fortunes could be considerably different here in Washington. Jim Fassel didn't win the SB. He's probably a nice guy, however, the same team that is now going to the SB was the same team that quit on him in 2003 resulting in a 4-12 record and his firing thereafter. Team continuity is very important in this league, with every head coach wanting to make his mark that continuity will most certainly be lost. What a lost for US the Fans. We matter little, except for the money we spend. Too Bad for ME the FAN.

Posted by: rww829 | January 23, 2008 5:40 PM

and btw...the ravens are going to crunch the skins this fall!

Posted by: jsedelman22 | January 23, 2008 5:40 PM

I laughed at the Arrington post too. Sick as it is, I think it speaks to the anger, rage and embarrasment we Skins fans have here.
I've never seen anything like this. I think Snyder and Cerrato are incompetent and the Post and everyone of us needs to publicly state this. Snyder didn't want Williams because he wouldn't say yes to him. What does that make of Gibbs. I think we've all been banged up the you know what with the crap we've been fed the last four years... All of that mumbo-jumbo.

This team needs a GM. Hello Beathard and Casserly. GMs andd coaches aren't supposed to always get along, but when the two are good, you usually win football games. HELLO STEELERS, COLTS, GIANTS and of course the Patriots!!!

Oh, Snyder is too busy running his Redskins amusement Park.
I'm out.

Posted by: petefaggen | January 23, 2008 5:41 PM

It feels like Snyder and Cerrato are about to flip the bird to the Redskins organization, the current coaching staff, former coach Gibbs, the players, the fans, and the whole city of DC. Morons (if it's true).

Posted by: busterkurosawa | January 23, 2008 5:42 PM

My only hope is that Snyder's other business ventures (Six Flags, Johnny Rockets, etc.) fail so completely that they become such a drain on his finances that he's forced to sell the team.

Otherwise I'll be forced to go through this BS every 3-4 years for the rest of my life. A little too Kafka-esque for me.

Posted by: ygbrown2001 | January 23, 2008 5:44 PM

btw, I am anti-cut-and-paste-from-the-blog posts by barno. Shows no effort. Just a cut and paste added to the preceding string of cut/paste. Remember barno, cutting is a thing you do to cheese ... and paste is made to be eaten while in kindergarten.

Hey idiot Vinny, why don't you trade Gregg Williams for Rex Ryan?? I look forward to a Gregg Williams coached team humiliating the two moron clowns! By the way, I hope BRANDON LLOYD bangs Dan Snyder's wife!

Posted by: jimwell | January 23, 2008 5:47 PM

Pretty disappointing news. Not real happy, I was of the opinion that continuity was the way to go.

I suppose though, I remember at the beginning of the season they were talking about how if the team didn't make a deep playoff run, they would blow it up.

Posted by: kost52 | January 23, 2008 5:47 PM

The B'more Sun seems to think that Ryan will stay there:

---------------------------------

The next move could be retaining Rex Ryan as their defensive coordinator, an NFL source said.

The Atlanta Falcons have offered their head coaching job to Jacksonville defensive coordinator Mike Smith -- according to reports -- a deal that would eliminate Ryan as a candidate for the position. Smith is a former Ravens assistant and Brian Billick's brother-in-law.

Ryan has been contacted by other teams about being a defensive coordinator, but the Ravens can block any move because he has another year left on his contract.

Harbaugh coached with Ryan when they were both at the University of Cincinnati in 1996.

I found the Arrington post hilarious. And the rape of your childhood, too. Tell me another.

Seriously, if Saint Joe hadn't called for continuity when he quit (how's that for continuity?), would any of y'all have been so keen for Flapjacks' picking a starter to mess with and Saunders's 700-page-playbook that apparently it takes 7 seasons on the bench to learn?

Posted by: suz | January 23, 2008 5:50 PM

Drew Bledsoe where are you?

Posted by: dave197391 | January 23, 2008 5:50 PM

JLC brings his fastball:

The moves appear to contradict statements Snyder made at the news conference announcing Gibbs's departure two weeks ago. Then, Snyder stressed his desire to maintain continuity and praised Gibbs for stabilizing a franchise that had gone through four head coaches in the four seasons before he arrived.

Now, naming two new coordinators and a new head coach would result in a complete overhaul of the team.

Posted by: Burgundy | January 23, 2008 5:51 PM

**(&^). Picking -another- starter to mess with.

Posted by: suz | January 23, 2008 5:51 PM

If Williams refused to pucker up for Vinny and that constituted a "lack of a relationship," then good for him. He will leave knowing he had the respect of his players and a job well done, with his dignity intact. Find greener pastures and then roll in to FedEx and lay the wood to Snyder & Co. The look on Snyder's face when Norv rolled in and beat the Skins was priceless. Now he can wait for Williams to do the same. Snyder's lack of character has come through loud and clear over the years - refused to fire Turner in person; denigrated Mike Nolan; dropped the hammer on Marty because football was "not fun;" dumped Coles; and now left the entire coaching staff out to dry as the jobs with other teams dwindled. Payback is hell. This is getting to be as much fun as watching Shanahan go toe to toe with Al Davis. What a joke the Skins have become - a cartoon.

Cmon, do you think any one of the PROFESSIONAL players on this team won't view this as a business decision. You hear it every day. Another player is cut it's business. Lost your job cause you got hurt, it's business. GG didn't get the job. That's a shame , it's business. After everything that Snyder did right after 21 was murdered I think the players may very well cut him more slack than the fans.

I Totally agree. Fossil has done well as a Head Coach. If we were hiring him as an OC I would be worried. He's the most proven candidate out there. Didn't anyone listen to the Acorsi (sp?) interview on Riggins last night? Hiring an assistant is just taking a shot in the dark as to how he will project to the totally different HC job. One will be a good HC, the other 9 will be gone in 3 seasons. I always thought Fossil did a good job with the G-men.

Even if you don't like him like I do, the comparisons to Spurrier or other doomsday scenarios, are just ridiculous. At worst, he's a competent pro coach.

I think that the last thing that Danny wants is players being loyal to a coach. That seems to offend Danny (as in "Why can't they love me?") So if the team is generally regarded as being loyal to Williams, it's obvious that Danny could not abide by this situation. Sounds childish? Couldn't happen? Remember Sanders? Remember that over the hill pass rusher from the Bills? They could care less about team lo
