Gregg Williams Update

FOX is reporting that Gregg is a candidate for the Miami job, although it is no secret that Parcells has some of his guys in line for that thing, with Dallas assistant head coach Tony Sparano seen as the top dog by far.

According to league sources, the Dolphins have not contacted thye Redskins yet for permission to interview Williams. This being a Sunday, it would not be surprising if Skins got a fax tomorrow in that regard. Teams by rule have 24 hours to inform a coach in such a situation about the request.

Williams has gone out of his way let everyone out here know over the years how much he loves doing this job, how much he loves Joe Gibbs and he is obviously seen as a primo candidate to replace Joe Gibbs when that day comes. His children are in high school here and thriving and Williams is not a guy who wants to spread himself around and interview all over the place.

But he would certainly have every right to interview. We'll see what develops of this and I'll keep you guys posted. Jay Glazer has somne ins with Parcells people, so they very well would want to talk to Gregg.

first... anyways...,.

Gregg dont go!!! lets keep this same team with same coaches around at least one more year before making hard decisions next year to cut a lot of player and Joe Gibbs retiring.

Posted by: roycog | January 6, 2008 4:58 PM

He's the most valuable single person to the team, player. coach or otherwise. The job he did this year was outstanding - with the exception of the Patriots game - especially considering the injuries to Rogers & Mcintosh, the tragic loss of Taylor, a below par front four which has trouble penetrating (the true linchpin of any defense, particularly in this pass-happy era), etc. He cooks up a new stew for every team and, for the most part, they have confounded the opposition. Losing him would be devastating.

Posted by: glaytham | January 6, 2008 5:02 PM

Like I said earlier, I will cry if Gregg goes away.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 6, 2008 5:02 PM

i feel greg blanche could do the same job...that said grilliams aint goin nowhere....

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 5:05 PM

I would also cry if Gregg Williams leaves and I believe he has earned the right to be our next head coach when Gibbs leaves.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 6, 2008 5:10 PM

I'm fascinated by Norv's offensive strategy so far. The Bolts are taking what the Titans are giving them, and so far the Titans are giving them backwards.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 6, 2008 5:10 PM

If Gregg Williams really is the coach-in-waiting at Redskins Park, then outside interest could hasten Joe Gibbs' departure.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 5:11 PM

Personally Grilliams is a cordinator not a head coach. But who knows maybe he is Belicheck 2.0...

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 5:13 PM

who makes brady quinn your whole add campaign?.....

rooting hard for Titans right now...

Fat Man LenDale!

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 5:15 PM

On a side note....I love the Chargers white helmet/yellow bolt look. Sharp.

Not to beat a dead horse. None of us can be sure how much success any coach will have. It strikes me that we are lusting after Russ Grimm as the next coach because he has the same philosophy as Joe. Isn't this the same philosophy that we spent weeks blogging about ??

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 5:20 PM

lusting may be a strong word, and i am for gibbs staying, but grimm is my man "when"

and no his philosophy has been updated by working with norv, cowher, wisenhut, mularky....

so it essentially gibbsian principals that has stayed current....no "learning curve" that gibbs had

the great missed op was when steelers blocked grimm from being gibbs' o-cord when gibbs signed on 4 years ago

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 5:26 PM

How do we feel about Swiss-ham back next year?? There are worse out there, but made me nervous BEFORE saturday's miss. Confidence in him?? Does he have confidence in himself?

Career numbers
30-39 yds 82%
40-49 yds 73%

but hey, he had 5 tackles this year...which is 5 more than me.

Free Agents...Rod Bironas (RFA), Josh Brown (UFA), Lawrence Tynes

On another side note....that "rock me baby" commercial with the animals singing is starting to issue me a complete beatdown

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 5:33 PM

Titans well equipped to beat the Colts. They usually play good games. What a weekend it could be...all very good games!

'Hawks @ Pack
Jags @ Pats
Titans? @ Colts
Jints @ Pokes

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 5:44 PM

CEJ - if the Titans win (6th seed), they go to the Pats and the Jags play Indy. If Chargers win, they go to Indy and the Jags play the Pats.

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 6, 2008 5:47 PM

No way parcells hires a gibbs guy. NO WAY.

Id bet the falcons go after Saunders. If that happens Cam Cameron comes here as our new OC.

Posted by: goskinsgo | January 6, 2008 5:48 PM

I cannot believe that this game is going to be 3-0 going into the half!

Posted by: suzannepdc | January 6, 2008 5:51 PM

Suz...thanks for the smack back to playoff reality ! I got lost in my own *hic* bacardi moment *hic*

I always root against Norv, and I like the Titans, Vince young and Jeff Fischer...

Skins are out not thinking strategicaly anymore just rootin for dudes i like

plus i love LenDale! better than Bush....YES!

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 5:53 PM

goskinsgo--Cam Cameron will be in Dallas with Wade Phillips once the entire O Staff gets dispersed throughout the league.

And Saunders to Atlanta? That doesn't seem likely, does it? That guy's been passed over too many times -- always a bridesmaid, never a bride.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 5:55 PM

let the record show i am way pro suisham, no reason to get rid of him.

but maybe find a punter that also kicks off....

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 5:58 PM

cej--Suisham's done enough to earn another year with the Skins. We gave up too quickly on Akers. But I would like to see Suisham have some competition in camp this year.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 6:00 PM

Niiiice kick by Bironas to end the half. RFA, huh? Hmmm.

On the subject of Suisham, I was worried about him even before the game, because we watched him warm up and he was very shaky. It looked like there was something wrong with his technique, because the ball was going end over end at about double the rate of a normal kick. Of course, that weird kicking also nearly won us the game, since it was responsible for the short kick that bounced over the Seahawks returner's head.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 6, 2008 6:02 PM

Suisham should definitely be back.

And I agree he should have competition in camp.

I would also like to see him work on his leg strength for kickoffs; he is often VERY short on kickoffs.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | January 6, 2008 6:03 PM

If the Titans can drive a stake through Norv Turner's heart, then the 'Skins will be the only road team that didn't win this weekend. Weird.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 6:04 PM

I'm torn on this game.

I'd like to see the Titans win, but on the other hand, I'd prefer to see a Jaguars/Patriots matchup next week, and if Tennessee wins, that won't happen.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | January 6, 2008 6:05 PM

TE - I tend to agree with you about Suisham. He didn't scare me, but he didn't exactly bring back memories of Chip Lohmiller either.

76 Kick offs -- 6 Touchbacks = 8% ( 3 kicked out of bounds..yikes!)

trying to find out the league avg.

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 6:05 PM

And as long as we're for-the-recording, for the record, I have no problems with Suisham being our kicker next year.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 6, 2008 6:05 PM

talent_evaluator --- I'll be honest, Cameron goes to Dallas scares me. If Cameron didnt loes T. Green, or Ronnie Brown they wouldn't have been 1-15.

I still hope GW and AS both stay for the team's sake. If and whn they can turn the corner they'll be dangerous (injuries prevented a FULL turn - IMHO)

Posted by: goskinsgo | January 6, 2008 6:05 PM

TE:

Cam will be in either St Louis or SF, not Dallas. Garrett stays to percolate more in winning enviornment.

Also Al Sunders already been a bride in San Diego. But I agree he aint HCing anywhere next season...

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 6:06 PM

I'd like to see the Titans win, but on the other hand, I'd prefer to see a Jaguars/Patriots matchup next week, and if Tennessee wins, that won't happen.

Seconded. My main playoff hope is for someone to beat the Pats.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 6, 2008 6:08 PM

I hope they both stay as well. I just hope that Al gives Jason pages 125-700 of that playbook.

I'm sure I'm wrong in this opinion, but, it just seemed like Jason got pgs 1 - 124 and Todd got the rest of the playbook. Of course, Todd's knowledge helped and the health of Santana et al was huge.

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 6:09 PM

I'm totally rooting for the Chargers in this game - not because I like them but because next week's game NEEDS to be Jags/Pats. The Jags might be able to beat the holier than thou Pats. The Titans? Not a chance.

Suisham should stay. He's been pretty good this season and it's not like great kickers are bountiful.

For the life of me I can't understand how anyone can envision Saunders going to ATL.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 6, 2008 6:09 PM

What about Derrick Frost coming back?

I read that Jeff Feagles is an UFA, and even though he's ancient, he DOES have a helluva knack for putting punts inside the 10.

Not sure if a punter is worth spending much money on though.

Can someone remind me why it didn't work out for Gregg Williams at Buffalo?

Saunders was a bride at San Diego? That was Marty's third marriage partner and Norv's, as well. How long ago was Saunders the bride?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 6, 2008 6:13 PM

Pats are gunna win it all, no sense fighting it....so I take each game on individual basis, and I hate Norv, would laugh silly if he loses this game 9-3....

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 6:14 PM

TE:

YeaH Saunders was a HC/Bride in SD like 1.5 years in 80's...

And SD was Marty's 4th marriage!

(Browns, KC, Skins, SD)

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 6:18 PM

The big question is: if the Chargers lose this game will Norv be fired?

Saunders was a coach in the late 80's with San Diego. williams was in Buffalo for 3 years after he was the DC with the Titans under J Fisher. This was during their Super Bowl era.

Man, I would love for the Cowboys to get to the Super Bowl to face the Pats and then lose 63-10

Posted by: hailbg | January 6, 2008 6:27 PM

Is it me, or does San Diego like to pout and stomp their feet. I know that every team has that when you have men competing on this level ( see Collins/Selelrs ) , but if it is not Rivers, it's Tomlinson, or Merriman.

I guess if they don't get their act together, ol Norv will be pouting as well.

Let the congregation say AMEN !

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 6:31 PM

Mr. Redskin,

Frost is 28th in the league, with a 41.0 yard average. Your man, Feagles, is 30th, with a 40.4 average. Not much of an upgrade.

Now, should you spend money on a punter? There's a bunch of guys with a 44 yard average, and they're ranked 9 through 15. Most punters punt 80 times a year (105 if you're punting for San Francisco). So three yards on 80 punts is 240 yards -- 15 yards per game. How much money is that worth?

The Redskins offense this year averaged 333.4 yards per game, 15th in the league. An extra 15 yards per game would move it up to 10th in the league.

I know, kicking isn't offense and it isn't defense, it's kicking. But, in order of magnitude, it's got to be worth something to move the ball closer to the other guy's endzone.

Williams lost his players in Buffalo because of, what some would say, his arrogance and inflexible style of coaching. That style seems to be tempered quite a bit from his up-close view of how things are done with Coach Gibbs and especially with the events of the past year

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 6, 2008 6:50 PM

I kinda think we might - just - maybe - just possibly be ok at WR. If we go...

1. Moss
2. Bryant Johnson ( FA from ARZ-i'll explain)
3. ARE
4. Che Che Caldwell
5. Big Tony Mix

Johnson won't break the bank. He is a big kid 6'3" 213 from Baltimore. Playing behind Fitzgerald and Boldin, he has never had more than 49 catches. But he isn't coming here to put up number 1 stats. 137 of his 210 catches have gone for 1st downs. I honestly don't know about his hands, but whadda ya think?

This also gives us a chance to see what Mix has, and he can take the place of Thrash on ST's... i know i know painful.

Well?? Anyone got any thoughts??

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 6:50 PM

i like it!

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 7:01 PM

Other Free Agent WR's

Bernard Berian, Chicago ( just like moss)
Devrey Henderson, New Orl ( eh ?)
Patrick Crayton, Pokes ( not possesion )

and some guy named R Moss from New England...don't know much about him!! But Moss and Moss sound pretty damn good to me. ( I know it will never happen, but just for giggles )

Are you baiting the blog CL?

Posted by: mack1 | January 6, 2008 7:37 PM

What do you guys thing about WR's Javon Walker and Roy Williams? Looks like both will be available via trade this off season. Do the Redskins pursue either one of them? I think I may consider sending my 1st to Detroit for Roy Williams. He's a big strong fast true #1 WR. Apparently he wants out of Detroit. As for Javon Walker, he seems like a me first type and rubs me the wrong way. He has knee problems so I think I would pass on him. WR's take at least 2 - 3 years to develop so I'm not in favor of selecting one late in the first round. I'd rather send me 1st rounder to Detroit for Williams. Not sure if Detroit would bite but it's worth a shot. Salary cap may be an issue as well with Moss, Randle El and Lloydd all having huge contracts.

Posted by: redskinlaker34 | January 6, 2008 7:37 PM

OK guys...I can't find which post it was, but one or two people brought up the idea of trading Ladell Betts in order to recoup the lost draft pick. The thought is that he would get about a 3rd or 4th rdr.

DISCLAIMER !!I AM NOT AGREEING with that!! DISCLAIMER !!

But for argument sake, get a 4th for ladell and pick up an extra OL ( assuming we get one in round 1 ).

We then can replace him with ...maybe Mewelde Moore UFA from Minnesota.

Talent Evaluator---as your name suggests--what do you think?

AGAIN I AM NOT IN FAVOR just throwing stuff against the wall

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 7:39 PM

yo mack, hadn't thought about but the humor is endless...

say no to trading picks for vets!

i like cej's boy in AZ...lets go get next year's wes welker!

Posted by: chrislarry | January 6, 2008 7:40 PM

3 unintentional dick references in one sentence is extraordinary work CL!
And I agree with you 100% on the folly of trading picks for vets. Especially with Vinny and crew evaluating the talent.

Posted by: mack1 | January 6, 2008 7:48 PM

I say no on trading Betts, if they wanted to do it they should have last year. His YPC is down this season and we did not split the load like we needed to. I would be shocked if Saunders and GG don't get a lot of looks this year, they patch worked like mad men with this team. I think that the Fightin' Hon's could use a guy like Weird Al.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 6, 2008 7:53 PM

Besides Lloyd (who was REALLY GOOD in SF) and Archuleta, what mistakes have Vinny & Co made? They have certainly drafted some good young talent. Kendall and Godfrey were also great pickups.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 6, 2008 7:58 PM

Lisa,

Agree that nobody could have predicted the extreme failure of The Receiver and Archuleta. I think the failure of Vinny et al has been in the guys they let leave ( Ex Ryan Clark, Lavar, ) and not addressing the depth at both lines.

Posted by: cej75024 | January 6, 2008 8:04 PM

Anyone want to wager on what we get for Lloyd? What round pick of do we cut him flat out or trade him for someone (if so what position/round draft pick are they)?
I am guessing we trade him for a low round pick OL.

Posted by: alex35332 | January 6, 2008 8:04 PM

we will just cut blloyd....and really good in SF is a stretch, i know he was on my fantasy team then....

vinny has been around since norv so he has had had many gaffs, but was it him or snyder...who knows...

Posted by: alex35332 | January 6, 2008 8:10 PM

We have NO leverage for trading LLoyd. Why would anybody give us a draft pick for someone who isn't cracking our top 4, and makes a lot of money? We will have to cut him. If he goes somewhere and puts up a 1000 yd season, bully for him. But it can't be here.

Brandon Lloyd was REALLY GOOD in SF
No one could predict the extreme failure of The Receiver

WTF?

Here are Receiver, The's career stats courtesy of Sportsline (http://sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/396021),

receiver, the's highs in SF would be 48 catches (hardly spectacular), 15.3 ypc average (decent to pretty good), and 6 tds (avarage). During these three years, receiver, the racked up a reputation amongst teammates and player personnel as a selfish malcontent, a bad teammate, and a dbag. Despite all of this, receiver, the is given a six-year, $27 million deal ($10 million guaranteed) and expected to turn into an all pro team player.

i'm sorry, but there were LOTS of signs that this was going to turn out badly. to claim otherwise is to do some significant historical revisionism

Suisham is the kicker. Mark Mosely made a good point in that most teams don't stick with a kicker long enough through rough spells.

I like Betts, but why would you keep him. Cartwright could probably do the same thing. RB's are easier to get that picks and O-lineman. No way I would trade our first round pick unless it was for Randy Moss.

Non the less Adam I still think he could go into some crap cities like, Tennessee or Oakland, end up a no 3 WR and contribute. The bottom 5 teams when it comes to Passing yards, SF Oak Buf Car Min

I don't see him going back to the 49ers. Buffalo is too cold he seems like a nancy. Minn could pick him up.

Lloyd could be a super star in the new AAFL, though the teams play in crap locations outside the Florida team.

Hey gang,

Thanks for the link to the RI Wiki. I live in Dallas ( yes i know !) but lived in DC/MD for 27 years. I found the RI blog this year at about week 3 or 4. HAD A BLAST as a frequent reader, semi-frequent poster. This has been great.

Gotta go get my Bacardi and get ready for The Wire...

Cheers!!

Lisa,

Amazing catches make highlight moments. Badly run routes, missed assignments, and lack of effort do not.

No question receiver, the made some eye popping plays. But for the 1 eye popping play per game (and that's definitely generous), you got 3+ quarters of squadoosh. Far better to have less flash, more substance, and be reliable throughout a game.

Adam

Okay, so I am now official - all registered with the wiki.

Still a girl - I am ready for a new Desperate Housewives! :) No Wire for me!

I agree with what some have said. I have a feeling that this would give Joe added reason to step aside as head coach and move in as a GM/Personnel guy. Gibbs has done pretty well with our draft picks and a number of our trades and free agents. (The money some were paid wasn't exactly the best, but I digress)

I hope Greg Stays.

My personal opinion is that Gibbs should stay. Who was the last coach to lead this team to the playoffs in two out of three seasons before Gibbs 2? Gibbs 1! I know people are not satisfied with simply getting to the postseason, but considering where this team ended the season in years previous, it is pretty good.
