Green, Monk Elected

Mark Maske calls this update in from Phoenix:
Former Washington Redskins teammates Darrell Green and Art Monk were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame today.
Green and Monk were elected as part of a six-member class that also includes Andre Tippett, Gary Zimmerman, Fred Dean, and Emmitt Thomas.
Former Redskins guard Russ Grimm was not elected.
"This is incredible," Green said. "It's just so special."
Green was elected in his first year of Hall of Fame eligibility, while Monk gets in after several years of fierce debate and election day rejections.

I'm going on a cruise the day after the HOF inductions. I swear, if Monk & Green get in, there's no way I can't work in a stop in Canton before I head to the cruise ship.

Rod Woodson is letting Adam Schefter have it about the flawed selection system. Schefter used to vote. Woodson says the voters are narrow minded :)

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 2, 2008 3:20 PM

they should all be locks. top 5...i'll take it.

Posted by: tenniz | February 2, 2008 3:30 PM

Um...why aren't there any voters from the Post? That can't help.

Posted by: jespider89 | February 2, 2008 3:36 PM

matt mosley is saying on his ESPN blog he has heard 10 got in...which would be a positive sign i think...

also that the biggest fight was Taglibou....also a good sign...

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 3:38 PM

10 people? I thought 6 was the max...

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 2, 2008 3:41 PM

6 is the max. I think there might be a provision for a 7th candidate if he's an old-timer...not sure, though.

Don't forget Emmitt Thomas in all of this. If he gets in as well, that would mean one more 'Skins player/coach in the HOF.

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 3:45 PM

i really hope Monk gets in....its such a joke....

Dr. Z i will take back 25 years of bashing you if you lift the ban....

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 3:48 PM

Len Shapiro is a voter. I guess he technically dosen't work for the Paper Post. But he does write articles on the web Post.

Posted by: 4thFloor | February 2, 2008 3:53 PM

They just have to get in.....I've already bought my tickets to the ceremony.....

Posted by: dchandl3 | February 2, 2008 3:56 PM

Ah. Ok. Thanks for the clarification, 4th. I just read Shapiro's piece today, and was about to ask, "What about Shapiro?"

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 03:48 PM

F Dr Z and the horse he rode in on...for that matter F Len P and all the other D-Bags who refuse to look at the cold hard facts and vote Monk in. He should have been in years ago and I, for one, refuse to believe he will not be elected before long by the majority of writers who will finall see the light. THIS YEAR!!

HAIL SKINS, HAIL ART MONK, HALL OF FAMER

cosmofla

Posted by: squashmo | February 2, 2008 3:59 PM

cosmo,

i agree...just saving my full court venom press until the list is out...

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 4:01 PM

Dr Z has said THIS YEAR he is going to vote for James Arthur Monk. We shall see

Posted by: roweq | February 2, 2008 4:05 PM

Schefter said only 1 wide receiver will get in...and SHOCKER - he does not think it will be Cris Carter this year...actually said Monk has a better chance although Cris will get in at some point.

Rod Woodson CONTINUES to say how worthy Art Monk is....

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 2, 2008 4:08 PM

Big Upps to Rod Woodson, also like his bigger point about the selection process....hope it doesn't hurt him when his time comes...

the arguements against Monk are almost to silly to believe...

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 4:11 PM

How can you retire as the alltime receptions leader and not be a first year lock?

I believe the voters are beginning to see Monk's many accomplishments - I will be stunned if he does not get in this go-around.

Posted by: CBT | February 2, 2008 4:12 PM

CBT...i hope i am wrong...but be prepared to be stunned

Posted by: clawrence | February 2, 2008 4:13 PM

If Monk gets in, we'll have to find another thing to complain about... but what? (tongue in cheek)

Posted by: Dorf | February 2, 2008 4:14 PM

btw, nfl.com is carrying the HoF announcements live at 4:30.

Posted by: CBT | February 2, 2008 4:15 PM

dorf, c'mon....you know we never complain about anything :)....and we all get along so well....:)

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 2, 2008 4:22 PM

absolutely absurd he is not in. Not only was he number 1 at retirement (actualy he was 2, rice past him just before he retired, but nonetheless was #1 for a very long time), held the record for most receptions in a season, but he also had the reception streak that people forget. Also, the most impressive stat is the number of receptions caught for 1st downs. It really is ridiculous he is not in. Also, while I love Darrell Green, I really can't understand why he would be a first ballot if monk is not. He played longer than Monk but in no way has the stats Monk did to support him. He should be in, but I just don't think his credentials are more than Monks.

Green and Monk in - what a throwback to a day when all was so right with our Skins. Both epitomized great talent together with hard work and humility in a franchise that always seemed to get more from its players than perhaps they had, individually. I miss it. Looked like those days were back until just a month ago. No we are back in the "let's buy a championship" days.

It' about time Art got into the HOF. I was beginning to think the whole thing was fixed, which it probably is. Congratulations to Darrell too. Much deserved for both of you.

I'm not a current fan of pro sports but when these guys played, I was as rabid a 'skins fan as ever existed.

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am just THRILLED that Art Monk made it after all these years of waiting. One of the classiest guys ever to wear a Redskins uniform, both on and off the field -- like his teammate Darrell Green.

With Art, Darrell and Fred Dean (plus coach Emmitt Thomas), it's a Redskins year at the HOF. Applause!!!!!

"Mr." Snyder...on the NFLN set in just a moment...

Vinny spotted in the audience talking to Doug Williams.

Maybe Doug's going to be our new head coach...

Posted by: PDiddy | February 2, 2008 5:32 PM

This is AWESOME!

I've started making plans to attend. My two favorite players of all time inducted on the same day? How could I not be there? :)

The tentative plan is to fly from Seattle to Pittsburgh, get picked up by my dad who'll be driving from VA, and take it from there. Probably spend Fri. & Sat. night in Pittsburgh, and fly home on Sunday. I'm holding off buying tickets for a day or two until we find out if one of my step-mom's sons (Bears fan) wants to join us. My step-mom's uncle was Bill George, inducted into the HOF in '74:

Snyder said he was very close to Sean Taylor. Snyder was also asked if he was going to hire Mooch....he was very evasive about who he plans to hire or WHEN. Darrell was asked if he has advised Snyder who to hire and he said "we'll talk about it" and then laughed....

Wait a minute. You're saying the coaching search is a debacle? Why hasn't Jasno posted anything about this?

I hope the press has the good grace to stay away from this. Today is the day to celebrate Art and Darrell, not to try to poke Mr. "Snyder" in the eye. But, knowing the media...

As I stated above, Schefter did ask Snyder about the coaching search.....basically ask if they (the NFL Network) were going to lose Steve Mariucci. Schefter was not rude at all.

I have a question I hope someone can answer (Cindy?)....if the Skins organization is not talking to any media outlet about who they plan to hire....and I'm sure they have instructed the candidates to keep their mouths shut...how in the world does John Clayton get inside info? Clayton STILL INSISTS the Skins will hire Fassel next week :(

Congrats to Art and Darrell, and big BOO to WBAL TV in Baltimore. When the sportscaster reported the induction, the station showed highlights of Darrell in his only uniform, and Art in an iggles uniform. How gauche is that.

Posted by: Markin21132 | February 2, 2008 6:28 PM

It still baffles me that a man who was the league's all-time leading receiver and played on 4 Super Bowl teams at the time of his retirement was not a first ballot inductee. The only saving grace is now that he is finally in, he gets to go in with a longtime teammate. Congrats to 2 of the greatest Skins, on and off the field, in the history of the franchise. Long overdue for one and well deserved for both.

Posted by: tkss | February 2, 2008 6:28 PM

Got my Tix - See you all in Canton

Posted by: mi-ti-bear | February 2, 2008 6:33 PM

4th, supreme thanks for the heads-up on tix. I successfully ordered 2 on the floor. Apparently you can't buy 3 on the floor, just in the stands. Makes sense, I guess. Step-mom's son didn't get back to my dad in time, so I had to pull the trigger. I have the benefit of having three computers at arm's length, so I was able to jump from one to the other to keep trying to get the best seats possible. Ended up with section 33, an upgrade from section 37. The tickets are ordered and paid for, and I'm psyched. Super-psyched, even. :)

Bobby Beathard, who Sports Illustrated once called "the smartest man in the NFL" has now drafted two HOFs in Green and Monk and hired a third in Gibbs. He will have a fourth after Junior Seau retires. Why won't the Danny hire Bobby?

Posted by: slidd | February 2, 2008 6:59 PM

Okay who was the greater roll model for the Washington/ Baltimore Metropolitan Area in the 80's-90's Green, Monk or Cal?

Posted by: alex35332 | February 2, 2008 7:00 PM

Finally something to be happy about as a Skins fan.

Congrats to D. Green for a first ballot selection. And congrats to A. Monk for finally making it to the HOF and for being so professional all those years he was snubbed.

I'll enjoy this for 2 days then go back to the realization that this franchise is a joke when Fassel is named HC.

From Wiki.

Bobby Beathard
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bobby Beathard is a former general manager in the National Football League. Over the course of his 38 years, his teams competed in seven Super Bowls (winning four times), beginning with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1966, Miami Dolphins in 1972 and 1973, Washington Redskins in 1982, 1983, and 1987, and the San Diego Chargers in 1994.
Beathard first joined pro football in 1963 as a part-time scout for the Kansas City Chiefs. He left the Chiefs briefly to scout for the American Football League and returned to Kansas City full-time after the AFL-NFL merger in 1966. He earned his first championship ring as a member of the 1966 Chiefs organization.
Beathard served as a scout for the Atlanta Falcons from 1968 through 1971. In 1972, Beathard was named director of player personnel for the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins won the following two Super Bowls. In 1978, the Washington Redskins named Beathard general manager. During his tenure in Washington, Beathard and head coach Joe Gibbs led the Redskins to three Super Bowls and two championships.
Beathard retired as general manager of the San Diego Chargers in 2002 after 10 seasons with the club. In just his third season in San Diego, the organization won its first AFC Western Division championship in more than a decade and, after five years, appeared in its first Super Bowl.
Beathard's son, Casey Beathard, is a country music songwriter.[1]

Man, it feels good to see that a man who wouldn't play the hat-in-hand, give-the-reporter-some-face-time, ya-gotta-go-sell-yourself game can get in simply on the merits.
Kind of like when an honorable man gets elected... happens almost never, but is incredibly invigorating and ... proper when it does.

Hey, watching the '72 skins losing to the champagne-poppers. Who's backing up Kilmer? None other than the infamous Sam Wyche.

He's been out of (head) coaching about as long as Gibbs... and as a former QB could be a great developer for JC.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you your "This kinda worked last time" head coaching candidate...

Consequently, Brian "homeless man" Belicheat will be 10 feet tall as well. Any wardrobe malfunctions will also be 10 feet tall... let's just hope its not Tom Petty.

Posted by: SwiftIT | February 3, 2008 01:05 AM

Guess Irvin's "injuries" and drug habit caught up with him and caused him to retire earlier, making him HOF-eligible earlier. (12 years in the NFL - retired at 33.) Elected in his third (?) year of eligibility.

Darrell Green, who is six years older than Irvin, played in the NFL for 20 years. (Came in 5 years earlier; left 3 years later.) Elected in his first year of eligibility.

So, who beat who?

Only an assclown like Norv would have ever made a comment like yours. He should be pleased, now that he has you for company.

Gibbs, who resigned Jan. 8, spoke yesterday about his role in the hiring process. "I've been purposefully kind of standing back because I didn't think I should be talking while the process is taking place. But I also think that some people have taken that the wrong way, that I had a problem with the process, and that's not the case at all."

Staff writers Jason Reid in Washington, and Les Carpenter and Mark Maske in Phoenix, contributed to this report.

I don't want to piss on the good news blog but.....

"But I also think that some people have taken that the wrong way, that I had a problem with the process, and that's not the case at all"

Did you see anywhere in the story that Gibbs said they were doing a good job? This is what we call political speak don't lie just don't say anything bad. They were going to put in a 3-4 (which is stupid for this team with two old and one injured starting LB). They got rid of Sanders for Zorn (stupid but arguable). ect. ect. ect. Oh yes Vinny is the GM.

Here's the question of the day for all of us:

Only ONE number has been officially retired in the history of the framchise (#33, Sammy Baugh).

Do #81 and #28 deserve to be officially retired? Answer dispassionately.

Discuss.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 5:15 AM

My answer: yes.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 5:16 AM

It makes me sick to see that low class f head with our great player D Green during the hall of fame news. He had nothing to do with D Green or Monk getting in.

F U Snyder - bring in Fassel and let the good times role.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 5:16 AM

I say NO.

Retire ST number.

Think about 50 years from now we won't have any numbers left if you do two a decade.

We have the ring of fame.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 05:20 AM

Wait! We're down to 10 numbers? :)

Maybe Vinny can trade our 2nd and 3rd this year to Cleveland for their unretired numbers--they've got bunches...

Posted by: HogsHead | February 3, 2008 7:25 AM

I think that #28 should be retired. He was a lifelong Redskin, an all decade player, and a first time hall of famer. Given the totality of his accomplishments, I could see retiring his number. While Monk was an outstanding player and deserved to be in the hall of fame, I don't think he reaches Green's level of impact to the Redskin and the NFL in general.

Posted by: mdvj | February 3, 2008 8:27 AM

Lets retire vinnyDAN's number.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 8:44 AM

This will be the last piece of good news for the skins for the next 27 years. So lets enjoy.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 8:47 AM

Can you all believe that vinnyDAN was about to get Fassel to be the coach in 2004 after the ball coach. Four years transpired, Fassel was fired, and nothing better came along than Fassel. Wow just Wow. Unless the Giants win then another coach will tell vinnyDAN to go to hill and Fassel will still be the HC.

Before retiring them they should retire #9, #42 and #49. Maybe also #43 and #44. But the Redskins have had a policy about retiring numbers. There is one number that should be retired in a ceremony at the home opener: #21.

Posted by: skinfanman | February 3, 2008 10:32 AM

f bestmick1

Posted by: clawrence | February 3, 2008 10:34 AM

Art Monk was finally voted in and deservedly so. He should have gone in a long time ago.

There were multiple reasons why he went in this time. One was that the voters decided they'd make up for several deserving players like Fred Dean and Andre Tippett. But also I think there was a lot of sympathy for the Redskins this time. The way the organization handled the Taylor tragedy with class and inspiration impressed the entire football world and, I think, allowed voters to consider all things Redskin in a different light.

Posted by: skinfanman | February 3, 2008 10:37 AM

I like the idea of what the skins do with most the numbers now. #33 is the only retired number every other number is simply a do not wear number. I think the policy should be numbers are designated as off limits unless a player goes to the "owner" of that number in person and asks for permission like Campbell did with Doug Williams.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 10:47 AM

I do agree though if you were to retire any number for the skins it would be 28. All the great players we have been mentioned but I many of them played for more then one team and soforth.

i like the idea of not retiring numbers (save sean taylor) as a rule, that then eliminates debate which gets old...

NFL Network just reports that Gregg Williams was talking to the Cowboys now. WTF!

Posted by: isonic1 | February 3, 2008 11:56 AM

Should the Redskins retire #28 and #81?

No. I agree with the poster who said that a new player should ask the former owner of that number for permission to wear that number. A new player hopefully would look at the ring of honor and measure himself honestly to that person before asking. The team and staff itself has a collective memory that judges the worthiness of allowing a player take a famous number.

Remember that the Redskins have been here for 75 years! For most bloggers that is about 45 years older than their living memory span. Starting to retire numbers would weight the process to the most recent in memory and would lessen the accomplishments of those who preceeded them, who may have been as influential in their own time but whose memory has faded with the passing of those fans.

Posted by: driley | February 3, 2008 11:57 AM

I am sure to catch hell for this next idea. I do not believe that #21 should be retired either. We are at this time still emotionally ragged in all aspects of Sean Taylor. I do wish that we not issue that number for a period of time. Nor do I think that any present Redskin would take on the burden of playing with that number at the present. To me the best way to honor the player and the number would be hold #21 for the player who in the future that plays most in the style of Sean Taylor AND exhibits the character to be a team leader. Then the number #21 would be awarded as a mantle for that player to wear and would be a living reminder and tribute to Sean Taylor. (The example that comes to mind if he were to reincarnate into another player would be Kenny Houston.) Of course that player would have to change his own number in a public ceremony but I think that would give far higher dignity and importance to #21.

Posted by: driley | February 3, 2008 12:14 PM

Gregg Williams to the Cowboys!!?!!!?!

I hate to say it but there would be some sort of twisted justice to this. Slapping Snyder's face twice a year would have to feel good for double g.

He should've been ours. Freaking Snyder.

WOOHOO! Late in the game today (was getting on the plane to Texas when the HOF was announced, but was on the phone with my sister, so I knew the good news before my three hour flight!)

Anyway, are you sure that #33 has been retired? I thought that we had not retired ANY numbers.

I also agree - I think that the "unofficial" number retiring works now.

Posted by: suzannepdc | February 3, 2008 12:39 PM

Oh and proudly wearing my #28 jersey at the bar here tonight (my #81 is too big and it will look like I have on no pants -it's about 75 there today - nice change from DC lately!)

Posted by: suzannepdc | February 3, 2008 12:42 PM

suzannepdc,
Pulled this from Wikipedia's page on the skins

Retired numbers
33 Sammy Baugh, QB-S-P, 1937-52
[edit]Unofficial retired numbers
The Redskins' policy since Baugh's retirement has been to not retire numbers. However, some numbers are unofficially retired and are usually withheld from being assigned to new players. The following numbers of past Redskin greats fall into that category.
7 Joe Theismann, QB, 1974-85
9 Sonny Jurgensen, QB, 1964-74
28 Darrell Green, CB, 1983-2002
42 Charley Taylor, WR, 1964-77
43 Larry Brown, RB, 1969-76
44 John Riggins, RB, 1976-79, 1981-85
49 Bobby Mitchell, RB, 1962-68
51 Monte Coleman, LB, 1979-94
65 Dave Butz, DT, 1975-88
70 Sam Huff, LB, 1964-69 (Worn by Leonard Marshall in 1993)
81 Art Monk, WR, 1980-93
84 Gary Clark, WR, 1985-92
The use of unofficial retired numbers drew controversy during Steve Spurrier's first year as head coach[36] Quarterbacks Danny Wuerffel and Shane Matthews first wore 7 and 9 respectively during training camp. The resulting sports talk furor led to them switching to 17 and 6.[36] During the season, reserve tight end Leonard Stephens wore number 49 for the season. After his retirement as assistant GM, Bobby Mitchell blasted the team, accusing late owners Edward Bennett Williams and Jack Kent Cooke of racism for not being considered for GM and was upset that the team would let a player like Leonard Stephens wear his number.[37]

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 12:48 PM

But I would have thought that Shane Matthews' performance as a Redskins quarterback would have earned him the right to wear #9 a la Sonny.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Posted by: RedBee | February 3, 2008 12:56 PM

So now to get to my point earlier. A lot of our great players who's numbers have been unofficially retired played in places other then DC. I think a prerequisite of an official number retirement should be playing your entire career on the Redskins.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 12:56 PM

alex,

i see the merits in that idea, but, look at Monk he wanted to finish his career here but that geek Norv ousted him...so why would that reflect negatively on Monk?

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 3:24 PM

Bobby Mitchell does not have a screw loose. The Redskins were the last team to have a black player (Mitchell) and that's pathetic. Then Mitchell is part of the organization for many years, makes the Hall of Fame, is in the admin but is never considered up for the GM position. They'd give him an "assistant" GM title but whenever the head GM position came up, they never approached him...and this was when there was no black GM in the league.

and no, i'm not saying he should have been hired because he was black. But you can see his frustration with the franchise but he was ALWAYS a loyal, class act. and then for them to allow some random player (Leonard Stephens) to wear his unofficially retired number was just bogus.

For the record the Redskins integration question is an unusual one to me. I don't dispute it in terms of African american players they were the last team to have a player. But the team had integrated prior to that in terms of minorities having had a Native American Head coach in 1933.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 4:11 PM

alex, I think "Lone Star" Dietz's claims to a Native American heritage are dubious at best.

In any event, Bobby Mitchell knows full well the history of the Redskins, and I would be loathe to question his authority on the circumstances of his acquisition and career as a player and his time in the front office.

And for Dan Snyder to have let Mitchell be humiliated by seeing his number worn by some nobody, and then let him leave the organization without (from what we know) doing anything to make it right, was nothing short of a disgrace, and remains one of the biggest blemishes (and that's saying something!) on the Snyder regime.

I as a fan have sat back had blinders on when it came to how things operated. I guess unitl he goes hout the
Skins won't win.

Posted by: lilagram | February 3, 2008 4:57 PM

The Six Flags investment has gone south, but it's not as bad as City Paper claims. Snyder bought most of his stock near the previous bottom -- $3 to $6 a share -- not the $12 peak that the story is premised on. The stock did rose in anticipation of his turning the company around, and has subsequently sunk to around $2.

A lot of the value of Six Flags is based on the real estate holdings. They could shut the parks and sell the land for more than the value of the stock. Real estate has sunk, and the stock with it. But you've got to wonder where Vinnie and Swanson came up with money to buy into Six Flags in a big way -- they probably have some loans out.

Very ugly.

If Portis ave 1200 yds a year for 4 more years he'll be in the top 10 all time!

Posted by: jhess18 | February 3, 2008 5:10 PM

It is a masterful theory on why Cartio has a job. Very good research there. I got to wonder if there isn't a grain of truth in it. Snyder is hesitant to fire someone who he is co-owners with in his Six Flags venture, totally logical.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 05:11 PM

I think it could explain why he has a job, but not why he has the important job that he's got. Dan could put him on the payroll as a driver for $1 million a year, and I'm sure he would if he didn't trust Vinny and think he's the best at what he does.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 5:18 PM

Vinny did a hell of a job with the 49ers. If the skins hire Mooch or Fassel and go 10-6 and make the playoffs. nobody has anything to critize about.

I just hope the skins don't trade for Chad Johnson

Hopefully Jason Campbell is our franshise QB and the organization will be on a winning roll.

TE - Haha I wish! Nothing but barrel-chested blokes where I am!!

I don't like the Pats, and hope they don't go unbeaten, but who are they playing? I reckon that at the end of the regular season, if we had've ranked the playoff teams, the Giants would've been one of the worst teams through.

I know that there are a lot of people picking the Giants, but I don't see it, I think this game is going to be an absolute whitewash.

And with the Spygate II stuff going on, it's just disheartening to know the integrity of a game you love so much, could potentially be so flawed.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 5:48 PM

kost,

You don't want to watch the first half just to see if we can get another Super Bowl III with Eli as Joe Willy Namath? You'd rather hang out with a bunch of barrell chested blokes? Probably better than barrell assed Sheilas.

Spygate II, if there turns out to be anything at all there, is about the integrity of Belichick's organization, not the game.

The NFL really does know how to put on a show. God, I love Super Bowl Sunday.

At home with the new puppy, got pizza on the way, trying to overcome this hangover, and ready to watch the mind-numbing boredom that is the Giants getting squished by the Patriots.

Patriots 31, Giants 10.

Have fun peeps!

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:15 PM

I suppose I'll follow it a little on the net, and if it seems close in the first half, I'll watch the replay. How long until kick-off?

If it's true, and they did cheat in the Rams Superbowl victory, how do you know they didn't in the others? All of them were close games. If they did, can you see how much they've changed things, McNabb might not be so frowned upon in Philly, TO might still be in Philly, and happy! Mike Martz might still be the Rams Head Coach, Bulger may not have ever replace Warner. I know the what if game is a silly game to play, but how do you trust that the game you're watching today, is a true match up between the two teams?

Wow, I really am in a bit of a downer mood! What's going on!

What do you guys think of having Tom Petty? I'm not sure, I'm sure he's bigger over there than he is here, so it probably makes more sense to you guys. I really liked Prince, I thought his show was awesome!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 6:27 PM

kost,

You're talking about Philly? They booed Santa Claus. If Philly won 32-10, they'd still hate McNabb. And TO? That's his problem? The Patriots taped him?

And you don't know if it's a true match-up. It's like that old question "What if the universe were only created 15 minutes ago and everything is just memories?" So what? It's the only game -- or universe -- we got.

You've been living upside down too long.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 6:28 PM

kost--

Tom Petty? I had to try to explain to my teenage kids who he was. And I couldn't because I don't even know who he was.

It gives you an idea of the demographic they're aiming the half-time show at.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 6:33 PM

LOL I can't say I'm a big Tom Petty fan. The only song of his I can think of off the top of my head is "Free Fallin'." Is that the one with the Alice in Wonderland type video?

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 6:36 PM

TE - Haha, reckon the blood's rushing to my head? Might be right!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 6:37 PM

Isn't Tom Petty the racecar guy?

I think I must own an Audi R8. Like right now.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:38 PM

Haha I know Tom Petty best as 'the artist Red Hot Chili Peppers stole Dani California from'

....oh and he was in the Simpsons "Rock Camp' episode.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 6:39 PM

Impressive little drive here. Chris Snee is blocking his guts out.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:39 PM

Now, the Chili Peppers, I *do* like. They would be a great half time show.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 6:41 PM

Wow, Eli and Peyton must have changed bodies. Great play.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:42 PM

The Giants are looking good so far.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 6:42 PM

Even my kids would watch the Chili Peppers.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 6:43 PM

Agree wholeheartedly. The Chili Peppers would be awesome.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:44 PM

Just looking up some stats, the biggest margin is 45 points, achieved twice. I'm not sure it'll get that high. I'm going with 52-10 Pats.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 6:48 PM

Bud Light's got the early lead in commercials. Next time I want some sparkling water, I'm buying a case.

Cindy, are you on duty tonight? When the cat's away...

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 6:50 PM

Best commercials so far: Audi R8, Pepsi Max (bobblehead), Bud Light (cheese run)...

Worst commercial so far: salesgenie.com

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:51 PM

The Peppers would be great, but only if they rocked out with their socks out.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 6:52 PM

Full Fox synergy going on...American Idol National Anthem, a very special episode of House brought to you by NFL assistant coaches, and MySpace replays all the ads later.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 6:53 PM

I think Cindy has her hands full with Tony.

That's different than "her hands full of Tony"...

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 6:56 PM

Diddy,

For what they're paying the NFL, they've got to milk it. Is Tom Petty a Fox property? Probably they'll have Paula Abdul on stage with him.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 6:57 PM

Good flag or bad flag?

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 6:58 PM

Great call. Obvious call. Pierce tackled Watson while the ball was in the air.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 7:01 PM

Good to hear. Was hoping we wouldn't be having a Seahawks/Steelers repeat.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 7:04 PM

You know, I could watch Angelina Jolie in a movie about cleaning toilets.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 7:04 PM

Now, the Chili Peppers, I *do* like. They would be a great half time show.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 06:41 PM

Dude I heard they broke up. They are on their final tour still I think but thats the end of that.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 7:06 PM

How do you do that in a climate controlled Dome??

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 7:06 PM

I watched the TBS(?) Lara Croft marathon yesterday... marveling at the feats of engineering that kept looking at me.

I'm sure there was a story involved.

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 7:08 PM

You know, I could watch Angelina Jolie in a movie about cleaning toilets.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 07:04 PM

Oh, so that was the plot.

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 7:17 PM

....and so the Eli Manning show begins.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 7:28 PM

no great commercials today as of yet but better than last year and the year before.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 7:29 PM

So the commercials here are better than last year.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 7:29 PM

LOL There's nothing I like more than seeing Tom Terrific on his ass. *giggle*

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 7:29 PM

sorry for the double post blog broke for me... or so i thought

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 7:30 PM

Randy Moss really has disappeared in the playoffs hasn't he!!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 7:34 PM

Good quick first half. I like that, I want Tom Petty.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 7:43 PM

Wow, I take back all that I said earlier on. It looks like a good close game, maybe I'll switch off now, and watch the rest tonight.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 7:53 PM

Methinks "Mr." Snyder will be quite enamored with Spags after this game. If he ends up getting the coaching gig, the D-line is gonna be beefed up big time in the off-season.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 7:53 PM

I agree, does not matter if the Giants lose or not. Hitting the Pat's in the mouth like this, Spag's stock is rising.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 7:56 PM

Are you crying about that? I want to talk to this guy after this game...

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 7:58 PM

JustMe, it'll be interesting, IF he is hired, he obviously places a high level of importance on the D-Line, while our new DC says his philosophy all starts with the corners.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 8:02 PM

LOL Not crying at all. If anything, salivating at the thought of having an actual pass rush.

Spags, or any good, youngish, up and coming coach, is exactly what I wanted to see if Manboobs didn't get the job.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 8:08 PM

Half time show sucks!!!!!

Posted by: jm220 | February 3, 2008 8:09 PM

I know, kost. Resolving that difference in philosophy would be quite interesting.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 8:11 PM

No offense to Tom Petty, but couldn't they have picked someone, you know, younger? This is a carefully calculated selection to offend the least number of demographics possible.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 8:15 PM

I haven't read all the posts so this may have been handled, but VinnyDAN lied in that "interview" saying that people on the superbowl teams were on his original list and he could not possibly deviate from the list.

B*&&sh#t.

I don't buy it. McDaniels maybe, but Spags? And wouldn't BB tell the newest BoyWonder what a bad idea it is to go to a team and have NO power, much less the kind of power BB is used to having?

Posted by: RedBee | February 3, 2008 8:19 PM

As Lincoln said at Super Bowl I, "The world will little note, nor long remember who we saw here..."

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 8:23 PM

Tom Petty is going younger. Before this it was The Stones and McCartney. Prince is about Pettys age, Petty just has the old hippy look is all where as prince has the old transsexual pimp look.

See they tried going too young and we got Brittny Spears, Boy Bands, and boobs with pasties on them. Oh and most of that music sucked balls.

Petty is a proven talent, he learned rock from the best in the business, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 8:25 PM

Bah a Gettysburg joke. Too Soon!

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 8:27 PM

Mike Carey calling a great game, as usual. I'm happy to see the first African American referee in the Super Bowl, and I'm happy that it's one of the League's great refs. But couldn't they give us one call by Ed Hochuli, just for fun?

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 8:38 PM

Tom Terrific is eating a lot of dirt today. *giggle*

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 8:43 PM

This may actually turn out to be a good game after all. Spags is going to look great in burgundy and gold...

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 8:44 PM

Man which coordinator would you rather have from that match? Every time we see the pats on the field I am thinking their OC and the Nat's DC are playing for a possible HC job.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 8:46 PM

Eh, I'm not convinced he's HC material, but he's using an effective defense effectively.
But I sure do want to have a 10-hour conversation with him on defensive philosophy.

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 8:47 PM

There is a great little spot in Potomac to do interviews I hear. Its in a van down by the river.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 8:51 PM

Why did New England go for it on fourth and 13 instead of kicking a field goal?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 8:56 PM

Why did New England go for it on fourth and 13 instead of kicking a field goal?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 08:56 PM

Maybe they just wanted to keep it interesting.. If they win 7-3 now that would be wild stuff.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 9:03 PM

A slight white dude was shown limping on the sideline. Maybe their kicker is hurt?

Posted by: mack1 | February 3, 2008 9:07 PM

The sideline reporter said the kicker isn't injured.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 9:08 PM

I tell you what, with a close game like this, I bet you Belicheat is wishing he had Vinatieri back there right now

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:09 PM

Wow. This is going to be a fun finish.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:11 PM

Now that 4th down attempt looks real bad

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 9:11 PM

I think the Giants are going to win this game....

Sad to say, Snyder will not be hiring Spags....it's gonna be Fassel. Or some offensive minded coach. Blache will be heading up our D and most of the D coaches are still here....but the offense needs help. I'm pretty darn sure it's going to be Fassel :(

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 3, 2008 9:23 PM

Huge, huge, huge, huge tackle there by Harrison. This is a great game.

The fans stopped the hiring of Fassel the first time. Maybe we should start the call for Spagnuolo.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:25 PM

And to think Lisa, during the pre-season you said you called the Giants!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:27 PM

Snyder simply put the hiring of Fassel "on hold" but I truly believe if Rex Ryan has been open to coming here (or able to) Fassel would have been hired 2 weeks ago...fan outrage or not.

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 3, 2008 9:28 PM

Who is the MVP of this game so far?

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:28 PM

That's right Kost....:)

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 3, 2008 9:29 PM

Lisa -- I think you're right. Offense is the weak link, and we have enough players to be competitive. I'd be thinking of an offensive coach first.

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 9:29 PM

PDiddy, was just thinking the same thing, looking at the stats, no one really stands out. Maybe Tuck - 2 Sacks, 1 FF. Welker has 10 catches almost 100 yards. Depends on who wins too.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:31 PM

My vote is for Welcker at this point...

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:32 PM

Great F-ing game.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:34 PM

KEEP THEM OUT!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:35 PM

NOOOOO!!!!!!!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:40 PM

The Sports gods have simply been smiling on Boston....first the Red Sox win the World Series ...looks like the Patriots may probably win the Super Bowl...and I'm predicting the Celtics to win the NBA Championship.

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 3, 2008 9:42 PM

I dunno about the Celtics Thinking that if we can beat em like we did then they may get KOed in the playoffs.

Posted by: alex35332 | February 3, 2008 9:45 PM

And, to think I wasn't going to watch this game.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 9:48 PM

How sweet would it be if the Giants scored on the final play!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:49 PM

JustMe, me too. I feel like a real a$$. Instead of being at work, I should've been at home watching this game. With Beer.

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:51 PM

Amazing!

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 9:51 PM

Steve Smith is a baller.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 9:55 PM

Wow. Wow. Wow.

I love this game.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:56 PM

YES!!!!!!!!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:56 PM

Do you believe in miracles?

Yes!

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 9:57 PM

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M MISSING THIS!!!! I'M SORRY FOOTBALL GODS! I'LL NEVER DOUBT YOUR INTEGRITY AGAIN!!!!!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 9:58 PM

Wasn't Plax's prediction 23-17? So if the Pats tied it here, then the Giants score a TD in OT, he'll be correct!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 10:00 PM

Tom Terrific in the dirt again!!!

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:00 PM

Unbelievable!

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 3, 2008 10:01 PM

This is it...

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:03 PM

Don't want to jinx it...

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 10:03 PM

This is good.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | February 3, 2008 10:03 PM

Wow.... Just, wow...ROFL

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:04 PM

OH MY GOD. Greatest upset in Super Bowl history? Is Plaxico the new Joe Namath?

Belicheck doesn't want to play out the last second. Jerk.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 10:04 PM

Can you feel that Billy Boy!!!! That's your perfect season down the drain!!! Crack those bottles of wine '72 Dolphins!!!!!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 10:05 PM

The Hoodie. No class cheater.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:05 PM

God, remember how Randy Moss was positively skewered by the media for running off the field before the end of the game when he was in Minnesota?

The media should absolutely ROAST Belicheck for what he just did. What a classless jerk.

Congrats to the Giants. Amazing story, amazing performance. Just amazing.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 10:06 PM

F Belichick, F cheaters, F Brady, F New England in general (Skins fans notwithstanding).

I got no love for the Jints or their fans. But I am doggone happy they won this game.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | February 3, 2008 10:06 PM

I can't stop giggling. *giggle*

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:06 PM

You gotta be happy for Coach Coughlin here. Man, oh man.

This is great.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 10:07 PM

What a great weekend. Monk and Green in the HOF, the Partiots humiliated on the biggest stage, and Bill Belichick shown as the arrogant, classless jerk that he is.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 10:08 PM

Who is MVP? Eli?????

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 10:08 PM

What a sorry loser Bilcheat is! Damn stay out on the field and show some class.

Posted by: jm220 | February 3, 2008 10:09 PM

Thank goodness, a good game. I was afraid of one of those done-by-halftime blowouts.

For some strange reason (having to do with 7th-grade politics, no doubt) my daughter is very unhappy right now.

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 10:10 PM

Steve Smith had some really big catches. I wish they could give the Giant's D-line the MVP. They played their asses off.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:11 PM

You gotta be happy for Coach Coughlin here. Man, oh man.

This is great.

Posted by: PDiddy

Yes I don't like the Giants but Coughlin is da man.

My mom is like "I don't like the Patriots I don't know why" then I have her a bunch of reasons.

I think ST had to be a part of this.

9-7 in the NFC was not that bad this year.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 10:12 PM

What on Earth is Doug Williams wearing? He looks like a blueberry.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 10:12 PM

LOL Doug needs a stylist, desperately.

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:13 PM

And just think....we assisted in this win....if not for the Giants goal line stanch in our game (when we could not score) they may have imploded at 0-3.

Posted by: Lisa_R | February 3, 2008 10:13 PM

For some strange reason (having to do with 7th-grade politics, no doubt) my daughter is very unhappy right now.

Posted by: daggar

Your daughter had a crush on Tom on doubt. Bad taste man.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 10:13 PM

Kost, you silly old fool. Sat around with a bunch of barrel-chested blokes while the greatest Super Bowl ever blew right past you.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 3, 2008 10:14 PM

Spags for head coach! Start the emails flying!

Posted by: PDiddy | February 3, 2008 10:14 PM

The Hoodie is gonna get skewered for going for it on 4th & 13. LOL

Posted by: JustMe | February 3, 2008 10:16 PM

Maybe, but I was kidding her about it and it didn't get the kind of rise out of her that it normally would.
But I'm sure it's a Boy thing in some way.

Posted by: daggar | February 3, 2008 10:16 PM

TE - Don't rub it in! I'm in tears!!! I wanted to see the Pats lose, I just didn't believe it was possible that they would!

Posted by: kost52 | February 3, 2008 10:17 PM

Congrads to the Giants, rude and obnoxious as their fans may be sometimes--I was a Gints fan today :-)

They took down the top seeds in both conferences, the Gurlz (thanks!) and the Pats (thanks!).

I'd rather put up with Gints fans this offseason than Gurlz fans or Pats adulation!

Maybe the Gints will make themselves my SECOND favorite team by hiring Fassel before Snyder hires him!

Posted by: Alan4 | February 3, 2008 10:18 PM

Spags for head coach! Start the emails flying!

Posted by: PDiddy

See my post in the morning. Dan likes shinny objects so yes Spags will get to tell dan to go to hill like all the others and Fassel will be our next coach. But Fassel did coach the Giants soo.

Posted by: mul | February 3, 2008 10:18 PM

Spags sh
