Shawn Springs Reacts To The Hiring Of Jim Zorn
Corner Shawn Springs was a former draft pick and star for the Seahawks and knew new Redskins head coach Jim Zorn a tad from his time in Seattle. Springs was enthusiastic about the possibilities but expects significant change in the offense.
"The offensive guys better be ready, I'm telling you it's going to be different from what they're used to. The way they ran practice and the whole philosophy of thinking is entirely differently. This system is all about speed, the quickness, the timing getting in and out of practice, from what I remember."
Springs said Zorn's roots under Mike Holmgren should serve him well:
"I like the fact that Coach Holmgren and his staff were extremely confident and extremely well-organized. I learned so much from them in practice. We had a learning period in practice. I learned so much from being those offensive coaches and Jim's been around enough good people that he'll bring in some good guys with experience, and I personally think he can do some things. I know he worked his quarterbacks hard, but we'll have to see what kind of coach he is."
Springs compared the efficiency and organization of Seattle's offense to the way Gregg Williams ran practices here when he was assistant head coach - defense. Privately, many players complained about the lack of special situations and late-game situations in practice sessions under Joe Gibbs.
"How Gregg was organized that how they were organized on the offensive side of the ball in Seattle. They're going to be aggressive on offense; they're not going to clam up. They're going to continue to push to score."
Springs said he had just begun to talk to teammates but thought the overall reaction would be one of relief and hope.
"Guys will be excited that we've got a coach, for one, and you can't argue the fact that he's coming from a system where they're coming from winning. Not all the prestige that Coach Gibbs had, but being around Coach Holmgren, that's pretty impressive."

Zorn Porn's better than a Collasal Fassel!
Let's see where this goes.
Posted by: Alan4 | February 9, 2008 8:20 PM
I remember when Joe Gibbs was hired the first time. We all said, Joe who? I think this has a chance to really work out. Zorn is hardnosed, detailed, and hungry, just like Joe was the first time around. I did not want Fassel or Mariucci, and was willing to go with Meeks or Spagnuolo, but this actually has me feeling optimistic.
Posted by: Allan2 | February 9, 2008 8:22 PM
'We all said, Joe who?'
...and they all answered "JOE MAMA!"
Posted by: Original_etrod | February 9, 2008 8:24 PM
Springs said Zorn runs offense like Williams ran defense, and he's saying it as a complelement.
Seems like it would have been ideal to have Williams AND Zorn, doesn't it?

At least the Caps are skating better...

Charlie C just said on XXX that he was told 10 days ago that Fassel wasn't going to be the HC. And that fan reaction did play a role in it. He also like Zorn and said outside of Cowher everything else is a gamble.
Posted by: jm220 | February 9, 2008 8:25 PM
Hey, anybody heard of Andy Reid? He was "just" A QBs coach. He hasn't done such a bad job in Philly, Cowher was "just" specail teams coach
Posted by: craig2 | February 9, 2008 08:14 PM
What you say is true, so Zorn could work out, but Reid and Cowher were hired to be head coaches from the get go. They weren't hired to be offensive coordinators and then elevated to HC seemingly because the FO suddenly realized they couldn't fill a HC vacancy.
Blind squirrels occasionally find nuts, but it doesn't happen all that often. Even if Zorn is a good HC, will Danny and Vinny make enough intelligent decisions to give him a fighting chance in the NFC East?

The Skins have been Re Zorn!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Tyler84101 | February 9, 2008 8:26 PM
The Redskins started 0-5 in Gibbs' first season as Head Coach (Gibbs 1.0). Let's not get overly optimistic about Zorn. The offense has to learn a new scheme with new terminology, so there are going to be some growing pains. If the existing players can adapt and new pieces can be added over time, the offense may become a serious force. But it won't happen overnight.

True, but I think this has a better chance of being very good than just about any of the other possibilites had of being just good, or even "not bad". And as I posted on the other thread, Cooley alteady has talked about how much he likes Zorn already, and we STILL don't really know what offense Zorn is going to run, it could be a mix of many things, look at what Payton did in New Orleans, ya never know what we are going to end up with here.
I for one, am pretty fired up!
The process was pretty screwed up, but maybe the outcome will make us ALL forget about the process.

Did anyone see the televised NFC practice today?
Cooley was rocking the Short flat front coaches shorts form the 80's.
It was all Rich and Marshall could talk about. They asked Cooley who said he like the freedom it gave him. Didnt bind the knees. Said Tyer gave him his first pari, a set of 50th anni pants. Now tyer special orders them.
Posted by: Zebraskins | February 9, 2008 9:02 PM
Now it all makes sense. Zorn was hired to be the HC. All of the staff hires were made with Zorn in mind. DS wanted to interview Spag to get a free look into the NYG brain trust. He knew press would eat it up. Fassel and Mariucci were smoke screens. Remember prev hires/interviews
were very secret and covert. So obvious meets that were "leaked" were done to manipulate the press.
Now Portis can make like Westbrook and Cooley can get 70 balls.
DS may not know who to draft and hire but he knows how market and manipulate.

Here is my submission
I just wanted to let you know the apparent displeasure you are inciting amonst all the the faithful fans who fill the skins coffers each year.
Now nothing has been made official, but I guarantee that if the Redskins dont stick with continuity (your words not mine)and keep the current coaching staff (we dont consider promoting vinny as continuity) then you might just lose the fans base that your money making machine, I mean football organization.
I speak for many people on many public forums that we are starting to feel used and abused by you Mr Snyder. We love our redskins, we have bought into what you have sold us for the last four years about going about this thing correct. You brought Gibbs in to right the ship, and now when we seem close and you have a chance to stay on that path it appears you are ready to abandon said ship to get on the fancier one.
The skins faithful will not stand. A great business man as youself should know you dont bite the hand that feeds you. Pay attention to your constituents for once Mr Synder.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
