Spags To Stay With the Giants
Steve Spagnuolo will remain with the New York Giants and is not a candidate for the Redskins job according to a source with knowledge of the situation. A formal announcement is likely to come later today, with a new three-year deal from the Giants on its way, too.
Spagnuolo returned to the New York area this morning. Jim Fassel was seen by many as the frontrunner to get this job, with Spagnuolo emerging late. It would appear to be headed that way now.

Spags would be a great coach for the Eagles if/when Andy Reid retires. So would GG. Would love to know what precipitated Spags no longer being in the running...
If Fassel ends up winning a Super Bowl, I will print this post, wrap it around a hot dog, and give it to barno to eat.

This has gone from bad to worse.
What a joke.
Posted by: CMoney1 | February 7, 2008 12:01 PM
Ahem...I'll rehash my post from earlier today.
""The biggest thing I believe that he has learned is patience. He obviously has more patience than we do. If not he would probably already hired a HC and perhaps made a huge mistake that in years to come everyone would be slamming him about."
There's a fine line between patience and complacence. Don't discount the fact that his lengthy decision process is losing him candidates. If you find the right man, you hire him. That's it. You don't need to take 4 interviews and a month without contact to decide if somebody will come along who's better suited for the job.
Snyder used to be the guy that when he found who he wanted, he wouldn't let that guy out of his sight before a deal was in place. Now he's done a 180, and just lets his candidates run free hoping that they'll come back to him when he calls.
Remember, it was originally reported that GW pulled his name from the list of candidates. It was GW's decision, not Snyder's. GW wanted out.
And what if the best candidates out there were Jim Caldwell or Jason Garrett? What if Snyder secretly had them at the top of his list? But he and his "due diligence" released them to get counter-offered by Indy and Dallas, and they agreed.
Snyder used to be the guy that snatched up whoever he wanted. Now he's having it get done by other owners. Not necessarily for those two guys listed before, but it is getting done. Remember a couple weeks ago, who was at the top of Snyder's reported list? Jim Mora. What if at the end of this whole process, it turns out that Mora was the best out of any candidate out there? Snyder had to go through his "thorough process", he allowed Mora to leave, and Mora decided to take his options elsewhere. The old Snyder would've had his man on the 1st try. The new Snyder allowed his man to leave.
I'm not saying that any of these guys would've been the best choice for Snyder. In fact, I think Snyder has lucked out with Spags ending up so hot, being IMO the best candidate, and being able to be the last guy interviewed. What I AM saying is that this whole process was done incorrectly. I'm saying that if Spags was available and was interviewed a month ago, and Snyder opted to practiced his "due diligence", it's very likely that Spags would've went elsewhere.
He lucked out and now has Spags available, but the way Snyder went about this process just screamed for a mediocre selection. He very well would have waited and waited for the next best guy to come along, then finally realize that there is no perfect guy, and by the time he turned around all his "plan B" top choices would've been snatched up. All he would've been left with are "plan C" retreads and leftovers that weren't good enough for any other jobs out there.
Just one man's opinion.

Almost everyone is up here screaming, bit@@ing and moaning about Fassel....F FOSSEL ... yadda yadda yadda....
Why on Earth is everyone sooo convinced that Spags is the answer??? Is it because he "is sooo intense??" Because he has a cool nickname?? Because he yells and screams on the sideline?? He was an assistant that did a great job for ONE GAME !! Granted, it was a pretty amazing game. None the less, we are going to hand over the keys to someone with NO RESUME?!?!?
Fassel at least has taken teams top to the play-offs and a Super Bowl. He has a history of at least leading quality teams.
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't feel the need to jump off the 14th st bridge....besides my ex-wife lives in SW DC...she might get a kick out of me jumping.

Well, I guess Spags had enough wisdom not to join the the cluster#$%^ that our team has become. I REALLY hope that Snyderatto can dig deep and avoid the team-killing mistake of hiring Fassel. Fassel is a boo-inviting retread who will not be successful here. Maybe he'll be a stopgap measure until something shiny is able to distract the attention of the Redskins brain(?)trust. Why does Snyder make it so hard to be a fan of this team?

Maybe the only reason Fassel would be a good choice is because he really doesn't give a damn and just wants the money, so maybe he'll just let the coordinators do all the work. Let's hope.
Oh yeah, Fassel sux!

Let's not even stage a charade. Just let Snyder coach the team. It's going to happen eventually. Snyder has already played the role of "the scout who brought you Patrick Ramsey" and "the GM who brought you Trung Canidate." How could coaching be far off? Heck let's even have him take a few snaps under center. He deserves it for all he's given this city!

Prior to the Giants/Buffalo game, many believed that the Giants were going to complete yet another 2nd half collapse and miss the playoffs entirely. This would have cost Coughlin and the rest of the Giants staff (including Spags) their jobs. As it turns out, they made a great run through the playoffs and Spags was made to be a genius, with his HC stock at an incredible high.
My bet is that the Giants return to their mediocre ways next year, as they often do after a great season. Spags stock will return to being a hit and miss DC, and he will have missed his opportunity to land a head coaching opportunity.

rickyroge, come on, dude. You know it's our God-given right to complain endlessly without any knowledge whatsoever!
For the record: I think if Fassel takes this underachieving lot and manages to eke out 9 wins, he will have done his job. The offensive line is old, the defensive backs are injured or worse, the linebackers are old and/or injured, and the receivers are midgets. The team has some great running backs, a very compelling, young defensive line, and a QB to build around. 9 wins would be a miracle, just as it was this past season.

Meh. It doesn't much matter to me since the real screw-up occurred when Snyder couldn't stomach Williams as HC. Everything since then is just damage control.
That said, I think Fassel would provide better immediate returns. I'm not sold on a position coach with one year as a coordinator having the best DL in the league carry him being able to handle all of the administrative duties that come with being a head coach.

I say we give Meeks a shot. He is ripe to be a head coach and the upside is unlimited. We also have the coaching staff all set, so we need a guy like him who will go with the flow at least this year (2008).

if snyder hires fassel, get ready for 1/2 empty Fedex, starting with the first game, and by the end of the season, completely empty.
hiring fassel is a complete slap in the face.

>>> "it will make sense next year to fire them and hire Bill "The Jaw" Cowher"
I believe that this would have been the case no matter who he hired. Remember, no assistant coach (save, perhaps, Zorn or Blache) have more than a 2 year deal remaining. It would be easy for "Mr." Snyder to clean house next year or the year after.
All NFL jobs have an inordinate amount of pressure associated with them, and NFL head coaches bear a ton of that pressure on their shoulders. Add the Snyder Factor to the equation, and, well, that's a lot of pressure. Even barno would crack.
Posted by: PDiddy | February 7, 2008 12:22 PM

>>> "a first year coordinator turns down what was once the marqee coaching job in the NFL"
We do NOT know this for a fact. Spags may well have not been offered the job at all. I'm all for bashing "Mr." Snyder. He is, after all, an arrogant jerk who treats his people (both at Snyder Communications and the Redskins) like dirt. He is a horrible manager and a worse executive, and his track record of success proves that out.
BUT we do NOT know if anyone other than Jim Mora, Jr. has declined to be considered, and even then we now know there were extenuating circumstances behind Mora's decision to withdraw.
Posted by: PDiddy | February 7, 2008 12:25 PM
Perhaps we could use the peening head to "work" Fassel by such methods until he loses all of his ductile characteristics and becomes strong but brittle.
Posted by: WrongDog | February 7, 2008 12:25 PM
The main problem with this franchise is that everyone wants to have their cake and eat it to. This team will not be better without 2-3 years of rebuilding from the ground up - through the draft.
Instead, we perpetually try to argue that we are just one or two missing pieces away from being a real contender... so instead of sinking the ship and building a new one, we are just mopping the decks of the titanic. Fassel will just continue this trend.
Unless Snyder is willing to destroy everything and build from scratch and accept several consecutive seasons with less than 5 wins, this franchise will never turn the corner and be a contender.

I WILL SAY IT ON THIS POST AS WELL.
F Fa'Sul,
F Snyder,
F all the posters who like either!!
You think George Allen, who, besides Gibbs, is the greatest of great Redskin's icons, would want a Giant coaching the 'Skins? Fa'Sul is a hack...a has-been...a failed offensive coordinator. And, for all you "he was NFL Coach of the Year" F YOU ALL!
Here are some coaches of year.
1989 Lindy Infante (NFC) 36-60
1991 Wayne Fontes (NFC) 67-71
1994 Dave Wannstedt (NFC) 82-87
1995 Ray Rhodes (NFC) 37-42-1
1996 Dom Capers (NFC) 48-80
2000 Jim Haslett (NFL) 45-51
2001 Dick Jauron (NFL) 36-49
Combined record? 351-440-1
That is a .443 winning percentage. You want Fa'Sul, listen to Westwood One. You want Snyder, eat at Johnny Rockets and ride Superman Tower of Power @ Six Flags (where that poor girl lost her feet). Leave the 'Skins alone, and hire some F-ing football people. Look at who was up for the Hall of Fame? Jacoby, Grimm, Monk and Green. Who drafted Grimm, Monk and Green and signed Jacoby as a RFA? B. Beathard. Who screwed Beathard after trying to resign him? Napoleon Un-Dynamite. Who has screwed the 'Skins since 1999 and will do so well into the 21st-century? You got it.

Posted by: drumer1972 | February 7, 2008 12:16 PM
You're mistaking the new Snyder for the old Snyder. The new Snyder must practice his "due dilligence", and thus will refuse to offer any candidates the job until he has scoured the earth and interviewed all current NFL assistants, out-of-work former NFL employees, NFL analysts, writers, and life-long fans before making his decision. It's a good thing that every possible candidate is completely desperate for a job and has no other options available, and thus will come running as soon as Dan phones them in.
Posted by: psps23 | February 7, 2008 12:26 PM
I just do not see the fascination with candidates like Fassel and mariuchi who have been lucky to field a .500 win % At least take a chance with a proven good assistant (Russ Grimm). I would rather take a risk on someone like Grimm (or Spagnoula) than be guaranteed a middle of the pack finish.

II think that's pretty good. As for his time in baltimore you can't hold that against him. How many of you on here complained about gibbs conservative style hampering Al Saunders offense well rthe same thing happend with fassel in baltimore billick handcuffed him. I wanted GG like everyone else but I am a skins fan till the end and how bout we give fassel a shot before we throw him under the bus.

I think barno is that hack Larry Michael, coming here to protect the (little) integrity of Dan Snyder against the mostly warranted attacks from the Redskins beat reporters.
Anyway, Fassel would be awful. He inspires zero confidence. Go with Mooch or Meeks. Snyder never should've let Grilliams walk. That's the move that will bite him in the butt.

It's nice to see someone "play" Snyder for a change. I'm betting Antonio Pierce let Spag know what a f'ed up organization the Redskins have now reverted to and Spags used the interview process to get a huge contract increase from the Giants.
Fassell sucks!!!!

3. Eat, Drink, and smoke cigars
4. Have butterflies caused by suspense

Has anyone else noticed that the once great franchises of the NFL (redskins, dolphins, bills, chiefs, raiders, 49ers) have completely fallen by the wayside while eternal losers/laughing-stocks (Patriots, Chargers, Seahawks) are now some of the premiere franchises?
Posted by: scotchirishprince | February 7, 2008 12:31 PM
Oh man. Snyder and Vinny have turned this once great franchise into the laughing stock of the NFL. Neither of the two have a clue as to what they're doing. I am ashamed to be a Redskins fan right now.

Spags is a lot smarter than maybe some people gave him credit for.
This team is headed nowhere fast. Couldn't happen to a nicer owner.
Posted by: ken_berlin | February 7, 2008 12:32 PM
I have never been so humiliated/embarrassed to be a Redskins fan! And Fassel would just be the absolute worse choice! Only Russ Grimm would save the day for me!

Posted by: the_squire | February 7, 2008 12:33 PM
Yea, what you guys really need is a new owner. No coach will ever succeed under "Chainsaw Dan".
Posted by: dwood31 | February 7, 2008 12:33 PM
The only positive in all this is at least Snyder is taking his time and taking this coaching search seriously and methodically. On that count, this certainly appears to be the best coaching search he has conducted.
Of course, it remains true that Snyder should not be involved in the process at all. Jerry Jones was a player, and has been a football guy all his life. Snyder is just a rich fan who has no technical understanding of the game or personal experience of the game whatsoever.
If Vinny the the new Executive of Football Operations, shouldn't Vinny be taking the lead on the coaching search, then bringing his choice to Snyder for approval?
Posted by: mirf59 | February 7, 2008 12:33 PM
Let me see. Assistants already hired, a couple of old Gibbs coaches still on the payroll, an aging O-Line, no big draft picks, big time cap problems, a bobbing head VP and a meddling owner who just wants to be part of the action. Sounds like a sweet deal to me. Who wouldn't want that.
Posted by: bfjam | February 7, 2008 12:34 PM
This is all hilarious. Eli/Coughlin this time last year? Right, both on the way out. Now? Genius. Bottom line is you need players and talent. With that D- Front line you look good. Let Blache have a crack at that front with the depth etc. Let us have a Moss/Burress jump ball receiver with Campbells arm. Its players folks. They make coaches look like geniuses...

this is worse than norv. at least norv had some sort of track record as a coordinator. fassel has stunk on every level. that one super bowl team was a complete fluke. the dirty bird falcons were less of a fluke than those giants.

uh...no ricky, jim fassel did not win a super bowl. he took a team in his first year as giants head coach that he didn't build to the SB, lost...then soundly fell into mediocrity.
Posted by: songsofpraise | February 7, 2008 12:19 PM
Actually, Fassel took the Giants to the playoffs in his first year and was named NFL Coach of the Year. He took the 2000 Giants to the Super Bowl, 3 years after he was hired so I'm pretty sure he helped build that team.
That said, he doesn't excite me too much either...but then again, none of the candidates really do at this point.
Posted by: sean.reese | February 7, 2008 12:36 PM
Boycott the little Napoleon! Stop subsidizing this idiocy and let's implement a fan strike! Skins might be Synder's team but the fans also have a stake in this as well. As long as Synder is blind to this fact the idiocy will continue.
Continue to support the skins by watching the games on TV but don't renew your season tickets and don't purchase skins merchandise or support any of Synder's enterprises including six flags, cruise movies, redskins tv, redskins radio, redskins.com, etc etc
Posted by: skinsfan7 | February 7, 2008 12:36 PM
My Guess is that he never planned to take the HC job but use it as a bargaining chip for a renegotiated contract in NY. Can't blame the man...just sucks balls for us.
Posted by: bryanlowers | February 7, 2008 12:37 PM
Spags is a wise man. He must've read Sallys column this morning. Snyder might as well coach the team himself at this point, because no decent coach is going to want to work for him.
Posted by: harrelsonw | February 7, 2008 12:37 PM
Also I am a huge Gibbs fan but Fassel finished 1st in the NFC East twice in his first 4 years and in the top 2 of the division 4 out of his 7 years in New York. In four years how many first place finishes did Gibbs have? none How many second place finishes? 1 how many last place finishes? 2 How many last place finishes for Fassel? 1 in seven years as coach. I think the numbers speak for themselves Fassel never won a super bowl like Gibbs but he is not that bad. Even his last season in New York he lost a lot of players and even the players thought he took the blame when it wasn't his fault
Posted by: murraysdaman10 | February 7, 2008 12:38 PM
It's amusing to read comments like these. It's just amazing to see that some people actually believe that Dan Snyder has spent all of this time, countless hours over the past month, putting all these pieces together on his coaching staff, interviewing countless candidates and advisers into the wee hours of the night, then re-interviewing many of them--some as many as 4 times--all so he can break it all up a year from now. Yeah, I'm sure that's his plan. You've figured him out, Puffy.
Like I said...there are some intellectual lightweights among us.
Posted by: barno | February 7, 2008 12:38 PM
>>> "redskins radio saying rogers will be ready for the season and rocky has a good chance too."
This is good news, but history has proven that it takes one additional year of playing for a player to fully come back from a torn knee ligament.
Posted by: PDiddy | February 7, 2008 12:39 PM
The only positive in all this is at least Snyder is taking his time and taking this coaching search seriously and methodically.
Posted by: mirf59 | February 7, 2008 12:33 PM
Am I the only one who thinks this has gone beyond the point of methodical and careful. HE hasn't narrowed his search, the candidates have narrowed it for him. They're leaving him in the dust. First Mora, then GW, now Spags. At some point you have to make a decision. All we're left with is are three coaches with no interest from any other franchises, two of which aren't even employed as coaches right now, and one of which who can't find a job at all. How is this coaching search encouraging at all?
Posted by: psps23 | February 7, 2008 12:39 PM
Why does everyone speak of Grimm as if he has "credintials" to be a good head coach? he doesn't. He was a good player and thats it. He might be a good HC some day, but we have no evidence of that fact.
Posted by: SETH.LEMASTER | February 7, 2008 12:39 PM
Smart move by Spagnuolo. I would never want to work for Snyder, situation is better in NY anyways..coming here he'd have to win over the majority of the players since everyone wanted Gregg Williams. and for a rookie coach that'll be tough to do. I guess Fassel is our man now..haaa Good luck because you'll need it
Posted by: ttn703 | February 7, 2008 12:40 PM
Sorry to hear Spagnuolo is out of the running. I think he would have been a good choice. I'm not that excited about the possibility of Fassel becoming the Redskins' next coach, but if he gets the nod i'll be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. He did have a lot of success in his last head coaching stint, and he knows the NFC East. Going back to the hindsight annointment of the Giants as the model franchise, how many New York reporters and fans were stoked when Coughlin wasn't fired last year and was given an extension? I personally loved it, thinking that the Giants had chained themselves to a horrible coach for at least another season. Not a lot of people knocking Coughlin now.

I used to be a Snyder defender...it is becoming nearly impossible now though...He was a mensch for Sean Taylor, as he should have been. But at this point, if we go with Fassel, it feels like a step backwards and a lack of consideration for the fanbase. Who has ever heard of a team hiring an OC and a DC and still searching for a coach. As a Skins fan living in NYC it becomes even harder to take the sad daily updates on this floundering search...
Posted by: sloopy | February 7, 2008 12:41 PM

barno, I can assure you, I am not an intellectual lightweight.
I stand by my assertion. If Fassel goes 8-8 or worse, this thing will get blown up again. If he wins the Super Bowl, I have some organic ketchup for you.

Posted by: chrislarry | February 7, 2008 12:42 PM
Spags is not ready for prime time. You don't bet your franchise on him until he's proven a little more than he has.
The Pats lost the Superbowl much more than the Giants won it. They came out heartless and soft. And I think Tom Brady was maybe 70% healthy. He couldn't plant quite right, and all of his throws were short. I give Spags a lot of credit for beating the Pats, but not all of it. I think you'd have seen a moderately similar game out of Dallas (ack) or Green Bay.
I applaud Snyder for taking his time. Hiring in reverse is weird, and I don't understand his motivation, so I won't comment on that. But it seems in the past he's had his one guy in mind, and this time he entered the process with an open mind. He didn't go with conventional wisdom (Williams) and he didn't go with the flavor of the moment (Spag), and for that he gets kudos.
Fassel and Mooch are proven pro coaches. Neither has earned a spot in Canton, but you could make the case for either of them that they have a lot left in the tank, and with a good team, they could be very good coaches. Mora was in that category, too. But he wanted (and got Seattle).
Meeks, Grimm, Schwartz, Spags (and so forth) are unknown. They have more potential (because you haven't seen them lose a ton of NFL games as a HC), but a lot more risk. I only have to point to Norv Turner, hired by the great can-do-no-wrong Jack Kent Cooke. To illustrate this point. If you're rebuilding, sure, why not. If you have a nucleus of strong talent, then I wouldn't gamble that on a novice coach.
Fassel has had some bad breaks. He was fired from NY after a not-so-bad season. Coughlin was about to be fired THIS season. Things turn on a bit of luck (and a Redskin goal line stand).
And I don't count Baltimore for Fassel. Arguing with Brian Billick about offensive ideas has got to be like arguing with Darth Vader about wearing black. The man's going to do what the man's going to do.
I hope we find out soon, though.
Posted by: jvwright | February 7, 2008 12:42 PM
TAKE THAT DANNYBOY!
You've managed to throw away a hell of a coach in Greg Williams. Why?
Because YOU want to control personnell, this, that, and the other.
You're the one who needs to go!
Posted by: bernard.deane | February 7, 2008 12:43 PM
Come on! Last time Fassel coached with the Ravens, he was fired by one of his best friends. The Ravens improved immediately after that. The only thing Fassel was considered for, was broadcasting, for radio. He might be the only one wanting to work for Snyder.
Good for Spagnuolo that he took the right decision and will remain with a winning team!
Posted by: verdi1 | February 7, 2008 12:43 PM
Can anyone out there check on the jet and see if it is on the way to/from Phoenix?
That will tell us if Fassel is imminent.

Posted by: wingmd | February 7, 2008 12:44 PM
If true may be why it was not Spags:
http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2008/02/07/ap4628306.html
WASHINGTON - The Washington Redskins eliminated Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday from their list of candidates to fill their coaching job.
A person familiar with the selection process, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the New York Giants defensive coordinator and the Redskins agreed he is probably a year or two away from being prepared to become a head coach.
Spagnuolo also felt he could play an important role as the Giants try to repeat as Super Bowl champions...

Posted by: kbmcwhinney | February 7, 2008 12:46 PM
Oh WOWSER!! not again, what the it`s again. It`s getting harder and harder to be a fan of this team, is SNYDER really that DUMB? Really that Stupid of a man. What a Joke. Fassell or whatever = Failure and honestly F that, i`ll be Dallas fan soon, this is insane what Snyder is doing. What a moron.
Posted by: rommi7 | February 7, 2008 12:47 PM
Does anyone really believe that the Redskins will be any better as long a Snyder owns the team? Nothing in the past eight years would support such a belief. It doesn't matter who he hires, the team will still be mediocre, or worse. Snyder had an opportunity to show he has changed. He could have followed Gibb's recommendations, but he didn't. It's just not in his personality. I'm giving up my tickets. It's just not worth it anymore.
Posted by: dfogleman | February 7, 2008 12:47 PM
The reason "Snyder is taking his time and taking this coaching search seriously and methodically" is because the candidate pool is empty except for the few retreads that other teams have declined to consider. This is the sad state of the redskins organization, once the envy of the league, and the holy grail of coaches everywhere. Under Synder and Cato's oversight we have become the laughingstock of the NFL!
Boycott Synder and his lunacy!!
Posted by: skinsfan7 | February 7, 2008 12:47 PM
Um Team JVwright,
Fassel's final season was 4-12 if thats your definition of "not so bad season" than your mentally prepared for the Skins next couple a years...
And the Pats lost the SB? Do you watch Football? The Giants punched them in the mouth repeatedly. Beat em in the trenches. That wins you games.....
In the words of the great Libertine Intellectual Barno....wow...just wow!

Then you had better start lining up for the fantasy rides at 6 flags along with Danny, Tom, Katie, Vinny and all the other vermin who are over there in fantasy land !

He did not win a Superbowl..he made it there and choked. Regardless, I do not like Fassel, he has no personality.
Posted by: hardhitter | February 7, 2008 12:11 PM
Well, I would argue that they didn't choke. They went up against one of the toughest Defenses EVER in the Ravens. As far as personality....THAT IS MY POINT !!!
Just because Spags and GW yells and screams and hops up and down while the ball is in the air, doesn't mean they can be a good coach.
DISLAIMER: I am not comparing these HOF coaches to Fassel !!
How much personality did Tom Landry have? I must have forgotten about the laugh a minute pressers that Tony Dungy had? How 'bout Chuck Noll? I always get Chris Rock and Joe Gibbs confused.
This is my argument about politics... just because someone gives a great speech, doesn't means they can be president. ( see Obama ) I hope he does/and is a good president. But don't mistake charisma for excellence.
Posted by: cej75024 | February 7, 2008 12:50 PM
I feel that everything that has happened to this point just undoes everything that the return of Joe Gibbs did for the franchise. It now seems that everything that he helped build over the past 4 years is quickly crumbling. Transitioning to Gregg Williams and Al Saunders was more than likely the logical move that Gibbs would have made if the decision was his. The team was in good hands and would have likely made the playoffs again. However, I believe they will be 6-10 next season under whoever takes over because the powers that be have not grasped what Gibbs attempted to teach them. I hope that I am wrong and will be the first to eat crow if I am but at this point I am ashamed to be a fan of this team as I donot believe that the ones making the big decisions have any clue on how to work with people or to run a team that can win!
Posted by: mottermx | February 7, 2008 12:50 PM
Everyone get off Fassel's back he was 31-19 vs the NFC East while he was the giants coach that is 62% so how many of you would complain about himgoing 4-2 vs the NFC east every year.

Posted by: pat5387 | February 7, 2008 12:51 PM
HA. So Spags agreed that he is a year or two away?
And who wants to bet Snyder and his bug eyed puppet ate that up as Spags dated his new, inflated, contract with the Giants due to his 2-day stay with Napolean?
Anyone who couldn't see this coming should be committed...
Heck, maybe we all need to be committed when it's realized that Napolean/Vinny/Fassel are running our favorite team.

Karma will bit you in the a**. Danny's getting his now after treating so many people like crap.
Make no mistake, the word's out about the Danny and Vinny show. Two inept individuals who know none of what they actually think they do.
There's no coaches beating down the Skins' door to work for him.
He's getting exactly what he deserves.
Posted by: SavedByZero | February 7, 2008 12:52 PM
I'm with skinsfan7, no more of my hard earned cash is going into that chump's pockets, no matter who He hires as HC. The reason he's made so much money off the Redskins franchise is NOT because he's a business genius, but that he happens to own a team with a large DIE-HARD fan base which sits in the nation's most affluent metropolitan area. You think he'd pulling the kind of bills he does now if he owned, say the Lions? The Redskins are a cash cow with a large, wealthy, loyaly fan base....and this "HC search" has been the watershed moment that has begung to significantly erode that loyal fan base. I love the Redskins, but as long as he owns the franchise I'll be watching the games on tv, filling my local watering hole's coffers and wearing my old 'Skins gear until it returns to dust.

Are you kidding me?
What in heaven's name do they talk about for 16 hours?
Does Snyder have some pathological
syndrome in which he can't get to the point quickly?

Let's all go POOP on Dan Snyder, literally.
Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 7, 2008 12:55 PM
Looking at the "who's staying/who's going" list from the coaching staff...
They basically got rid of the Space Cowboys (being a consultant is so much fun!), Weird Al (who none of us could stomach anyway), and GG (who was a fan favorite, admittedly).
The rest of the staff has remained more or less intact. So, "Mr." Snyder aims for "continuity" (a concept which I still think is a myth when you change head coaches in the NFL) and replaces a guy he probably hated as much as we did (Weird Al) with a really, really good coach (Zorn). I think he totally screwed up the GG situation, but there was no way he was going to stay as DC after getting passed over, so they elevate another fantastic coach (Blache).
In the end, we're going to get an offense that may be easier for JC to digest and an offensive coordinator who is likely less dogmatic about his system and will alter things to suit the QB's strengths instead of simply scaling things back to protect him.
The defense is in trouble at defensive back and linebacker (age and injuries) and they need to get stronger there. But that defensive line could be really good next season.
It's not as bad as it seems, but who am I to stand in the way of today's vigorous attempt to reach 500K posts by training camp!
Posted by: PDiddy | February 7, 2008 12:55 PM
Just imagine where we would be if Gibbs had fulfilled his contract and we weren't looking for a HC until next year....
Continuity leading up to Cowher.... it would have been a beautiful thing.
Posted by: SETH.LEMASTER | February 7, 2008 12:51 PM
SL,
No player/roster control. A front office that is arguably the worst in the league.
Cowher would NEVER touch this job under these circumstances.
Even he did, it would just be Marty II.
Posted by: gdennie | February 7, 2008 12:55 PM
and repeat . . .
Funny how coaches who want to be able to have their players respect them don't really want this job, while coaches who only want a paycheck and the cachet of being a HC in the NFL do . . .
- Let me say that I don't think that applies to Ron Meeks, so I hope to heaven that he gets the job, but history says that is what will disqualify him -
Posted by: RedBee | February 7, 2008 12:55 PM
This is all Joe Gibbs fault, he's not even a man of his word.
Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | February 7, 2008 12:56 PM
Any Redskin fan that wanted Spags to be our coach needs their head examined. This guy caught magic in a bottle at the end of the season. What makes this guy the next great coach? Who wants a stinking Giants coach anyways? Much the same as Norv (a Cowboy) being our coach, sucked!
Mooch is my pick. He's a proven winner and players like him.

I've been posting this for days..
"I still think spags is pulling thee ole "squeeze play" and using the redskins... which everyone does.. can't blame them.. i'd be surprised if he takes a job where he has little control, the staff is already picked, etc.. look for Fassel as the only one who will take the job here (after this half ass way of getting a coach) and danny to say "he was their man all along".. yeah right..
Wow, i'm i surprised he used the redskins to get a better deal.. to bad because I really think he would be a great coach.. and knows the nfc east inside and out..
we all better realize that no good coach wants to be a puppet here..
and I can see it now, danny boy at the podium saying: after an extentive search Fassel came out at the top of our list.. i'm getting my barf bag ready..

I'm writing this post only so I can be one of those "you read it here" j@ck@$$es. Also, because people are posting so fast and furious up here, no one will read this.
Big Media is being played ... the answer is Jim Schwartz. The FIRST guy to be interviewed. They've never stopped talking. It was Schwartz, not Fassel or Mariucci, who said Zorn was the guy. Schwartz is a "Moneyball" guy (per the wikipedias). Sciencey. Young. Late nighter. Local guy.
Anyone remember when Emilio posted Jasno's call-in about other teams asking to interview Saunders and Williams after they got canned? The Rams and the TITANS requested the opportunity to interview Williams. You think Jeff Fisher is going anywhere?
The Owner likes plash. Even though there are no celebrities to hire, the other way to make a plash is "surprise!" When they hired St. Joe, everyone freaked out b/c it was Joe Gibbs. The reason it was a plash was b/c NO ONE SAW IT COMING.
Schwartz will be the guy. Just sayin'

When you are a coach that has been actively looking for a head coaching job ever since you got fired from your last one (READ: Jim Fassel), and the only team to seriously show interest is the Washington Redskins, then that is a concern.
When you are the last head coach to be fired by the team that just won the Super Bowl (READ: Jim Fassel), and the only team to still show interest in you is the Washington Redskins, then that is disconcerting.
When you are the self-proclaimed offensive genius and "molder of quarterbacks" who was fired from your last head-coaching job AND your last offensive coordinator job (READ: Jim Fassel), and, inexplicably still draw interest from but one team, the Washington Redskins, then that is joke.
Let me see if I understand who the choices are now:
The aforementioned Jim Fassel.
The much-heralded Steve Marriuci (who, aside from getting fired from his last head-coaching job, also lost control of a quality team in San Francisco and was fired there as well).
Ron Meeks. The former assistant coach of the Washington Redskins seeking his first head coaching opportunity.
Tell me again...What was so wrong with Gregg Williams? Oh, yes. I remember. He wouldn't let his name be smeared by the poor spin disseminating from the mouths of Dan Snyder and Vinny (what grown man calls himself Vinny) Cerato.
And as for that one man who longed for Norv Turner:
The Norv Turner-coached San Diego Chargers were in the AFC Championship Game. The Washington Redskins - who made a valiant effort to get into the playoffs twice in the past three years - were at home.
And now, every coach who had responsibility for getting the Redskins to the playoffs, from Joe Gibbs to Gregg Williams to Al Saunders (yes, even Al Saunders), is gone.
Congratulations, Mr. Snyder and Mr. Cerato. You have both done a fantastic job of living up to your promise of "continutity" of Joe Gibbs II.
Bravo. Bravo, gentlemen. And I use that term loosely.
Posted by: ilovewilbon | February 7, 2008 12:58 PM
Enough already just name a friggin coach...this is getting downright stupid! If this wasn't the guy, then the choice should've been already to go..I mean how hard is it to say if Spags is not the guy here's our first and best choice for the job and get'er done....

Doesn't mean that I'm going to like him as my head coach.

Sorry to hear that Spagnuolo is out of the running. I think he would have been a good choice. Not that excited about the possibility of Fassel becoming the next coach, although if he gets the nod I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He had a lot of success in his last head coaching stint, and he knows the NFC East. As for the hindsight annointment of the Giants as the model franchise, how many New York reporters and fans were stoked when Coughlin wasn't fired at the end of last year and was given a contract extension? I personally was ecstatic about it, as I thought the Giants were getting saddled with a horrible coach for another year. Not too many people are knocking Coughlin now.

Remember Gibbs was an assistant at San Diego and Cook's second choice when he came to Washington. Give R. Grimm a chance but he must have the same power over the team that Gibbs had last year. That is the problem. Danny boy wants to make decisions and not get laughed at by the real coaches.
Posted by: warnerr | February 7, 2008 1:02 PM
For the ham-handed way this has been hadnled I believe the boy should move the team to Los Angeles to fit his personality and etiquette for dealing with people.

Serious question - if you were Fassell would you want the job? Okay, I realize that there are only 32 of these out there, but what to do you/how do you handle all of this incredibly negative reaction about you? It's not like people are split - 95% of the reaction is very, very negative - think it takes some balls (or perhaps some arrogance) to come on in under these conditions.
And if thing re: Spags not being ready is true - good for him for recognizing where he is professionally.

Posted by: kapiskosky | February 7, 2008 12:56 PM
There are guys in a town called Detroit that might disagree with your statement.
Mooch was the steward of a team that dominated the NFL in the 80's and early 90's and declined under him as it got older. He then bombed out in Detroit.
His claim to fame was that Brett Favre played well under him. Hardly unique in that regard.
Posted by: Skinz | February 7, 2008 1:04 PM
I guess Spags decided he didn't want to drink Little Danny Snyder's wine from a coke can a-la Michael Jackson. No worries though, I am sure that Vinny Cerrato came through and serviced Little Danny Snyder's useless genitals to help ease the pain.

Hahaha As big of a skins fan as i am, i would actually be extremely delighted and satisfied to see that happen. Snyder and his dumb-ass due diligence deserve it. This isn't rocket science, you only have a handful of options to decide between. You're a businessman, you're supposed to be decisive.

You win games. Hatred quickly turns to adulation if you win.
And no matter how loved you are, if you lose, adulation turns to hatred. If Spanuolo or Cowher took the job, then went 5-11, this blog would be bemoaning the fact that Snyder didn't pick Fassell.
Posted by: talent_evaluator | February 7, 2008 1:07 PM
Not to state the obvious, but I have come to the conclusion that Danny's interview "Process" is actually working in reverse.
It's really not Danny and Vinny interviewing potential coaches, it's potential coaches interviewing Danny and Vinny. And no one's buying what they're selling, not Al, not GW, not Carroll, not Cowher, not Mooch, not Meeks, not etc etc etc......
Work with me on this. Maybe Danny's meeting with Jerry Jones was so Jerry could tell Danny that he should seize the opportunity, put on the headset and stand on the sidelines and run the team himself!
Jerry sure acts like he wants to in Dallas.....
It will be interesting to see if Fassel is really serious about entering the world of Dannydom....
Posted by: Skinzfan2 | February 7, 2008 1:08 PM
Everyone get off Fassel's back he was 31-19 vs the NFC East while he was the giants coach that is 62% so how many of you would complain about himgoing 4-2 vs the NFC east every year.

Yeah but Fa'Sul had a stellar 25-33 as the head coach at Utah. Granted, he had 2 1st place seasons in the NFC EAST, but he also had 3 3rd place seasons and 1 4th. He also is 2-3 in the post-season.
According to our friends at Wikipedia, "In 2004 and 2005, Jim and Kitty Fassel owned a Quiznos restaurant in Denville, New Jersey. Their son Brian was in charge of day to day operations. The store was sold in April 2005 but still remains open."

Jason Campbell is our future, he either developes into a franchise QB and our coach and FO look smart, keep stability and be a consistant winner or he doesn't and we continue to lose, be a laughing stock, but I think that leads to the end of Vinny..... I will continue to monitor this situation using 20/20 hindsight and provide the blog with timely updates.....

Just popped by between presentation sessions (and nursing a hangover from being overserved last night).
Many thanks to Markin21132 for coming down to Annapolis to meet up with me on Tuesday evening. He's a very interesting, fun guy; who knew a Redskin fan could be those things? :)
Thanks 4-12 for suggesting the Boatyard, the beer and food were excellent.
As he had come from the future he was able to tell me the outcome of the current coaching search but I am unable to pass that on as:
7. He made me promise not to.

Sorry to see you guys are still without, but rest-assured you'll have your new person within this quarter!!

Then ask yourself why all these other non-Fassels won't come here ?
Wake up Danny !!!!!!!
Posted by: vpar57 | February 7, 2008 1:12 PM
A lot of Mooch calling going on. I'm not calling for mooch, or Fassel. Mooch had 2 good seasons, both with a Hall of Fame quarterback. His other seasons were under .500. Why do you think the 49ers fired him after Steve Young was gone? They didn't see anything in him. I would rather have Mooch than Fassel though. I think Mooch is adaptable and does bring good experience, If he is the type of guy to learn from his mistakes. Meeks, Cowher, or Mooch would satisfy me, all could leave us utterly dissappointed still. Cowher only turned the job down because he wanted personnel control and Danny didn't want to give it to him. Stupid.
As frustrated as I am with Snyder I can't stop being a Redskin. Although I think Snyder is living off of Redskin "Diehards" like me that couldn't stop supporting them if we tried.

Snyder more than anyone else understands you have to sell sizzle. Fassel is unsizzle.

AP Breaking News: "In his infinite wisdom, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder hires Mark Brunell as Head Coach."
Posted by: f_smoot27 | February 7, 2008 1:13 PM
I am glad Spags is out of the mix for the HC job. I am so angry about how this has played out. If Snyder hires Fassel, then my 55 as a Redskin fan may be over. Snyder has yet again blown up a team on the cusp of being pretty good. And what really tees me off is the Gregg Williams has signed on in Jacksonville. We may never know what the problem between the owner and Williams was. But I suspect it has something to do with the fact that Williams was not going to be a puppet for the owner. Snyder wants someone he and Vinny can manipulate. Everyone can see, as Sally Jenkins said in her latest column, that Snyder is a coach killer. He even killed Joe Gibbs. He really did. I am not big on conspiracy theories, but I wonder if Gibbs left because of Snyder, or at least in part because of that, or maybe he was pushed. Sounds crazy. But nothing about this guy Snyder surprises me. As Jason wrote the other day, Snyder and Vinny leave people by the road. Unbelievable that someone like Snyder could end up owning this franchise.

It would have been nuts for Spagnuolo to leave a great organization just won the Super Bowl and to take over HC job of a dysfunctional organization in which every job is filled before head coach even hired, and has no say about personnel and their competence as if running DC school system.

Actually, he's dead. But if he were alive and the new coach, we'd have the hand signals down pat in case the coach-QB headset stopped working.
Posted by: PDiddy | February 7, 2008 1:18 PM
One more thing. If I were the team's owner, I would give Mooch a chance and more than one year. His selection is the only one that I can think of that would not so antagonize Redskin fans. Meeks might be OK, but I still would go with Mooch.
Posted by: royhobbs56 | February 7, 2008 1:18 PM
Spags is a very, very smart man. I believe his stock went up even more by not becoming part of the Snyder Circus. Why would anyone want to work for Snyder. Spags will get his chance with a professional, well-run organization.

I suggest we try to setup a system similiar to a lot of European soccer teams, where the fans own a stake of the club. We can buy the majority shares of the Redskins from Snyder, have a say in the structure of the team. We can also fire the GM or personnel director after a set amount of time if they do not perform up to our standards. If we get over 500,000 fans to buy shares ranging in price from $20 to $20,00 we can retake this beloved team, and try to restore to the way it was when the Squire was running things.

I say again, we do NOT know if Spags withdrew, if he was never offered the job, or if it was a mutual decision. As I said numerous times before, young coaches should take every opportunity afforded them to interview for a head coaching job. It's a job interview process obviously unlike anything we've ever seen (except maybe barno, he knows everything). And interviewing with a little dynamo like "Mr." Snyder has to be great preparation for when your time HAS come.

It's amazing how dumb a person can be while making so much money.
Snyder is a nightmare for Redskins' fans.

I think Mr Gibbs back to coach Redskins was a waste of time.He knows it, even though, it seems like he stabilize things, really he tried, but SNYDER is a DESTROYER. Nothing is really achieved, Absolutely big FAT ( Zero O).I see tis organization going down the DRAIN.. Anyone know of LIVERPOOL FC in England? the Fans R trying to Buy out the Club from the Current Owner, WHY Can`t we do that with the REDSKINS? Let`s Buy and take away REDSKINS From SNYDER b4 he destroy it, he`s a DESTROYER. We need to create a site, get names and contribute $$ and BUY OUT the team we love, this is a TV show that SNYDER plays in, produce and direct, this is BAD BAD BAD show to watch. This team nees help and only FANS can do it.

I'd sign Rocky Balboa in a heartbeat. And that Rudy guy from Notre Dame. Oh, and Marky Mark from that Iggles movie. And we'd get the "Friday Night Lighs" coach (from the TV show, not the movie or book). I'm sure my little team of Hollywood tough guys could take on the big bad NFC East.
