Zorn Speaks

Since Jasno apparently has zero Springsteen on his Ipod (at least no Bruce songs ever come up during Jasno's chats), we'll take advantage of the blogger's absence by asking: "Is there anybody alive out there??" Seems it rained here today and the city pretty much shut down. For those federal workers at your computers (all three of you), Zorn spoke at the Combine with Mark Maske and went through the roster.
Nothing too Earth-shattering but I'll be putting things up all afternoon. Here's Mark's summation: Zorn said he wants Collins back as a backup. Campbell is the clear-cut starter and will be cleared for drills the first time the team takes the field in the offseason. He said he wants Springs back and Cartwright back. He said Carlos Rogers won't be ready for the start of the season. He said he likes the wide receivers he has, although not ruling out getting another one. He listed his positions of need as safety, cornerback, depth on the offensive line and backup quarterback.

hope Rock stays. As for what Zorn wants - we'll see if it matches up with what Vinny and the Danny want...

3rdish
I think we are ok at saftey, i would like to see reed get a chance back there. we need some depth at cb, smooooot played hurt at the end of the season, and im not sure hop many seasons springs has played every game in but its probubly not many.

Posted by: SAK2 | February 22, 2008 12:54 PM

How about converting Springs to Safety? Just a thought...

PFT HEROES 2007: THE ART MONK AWARD
Posted by Mike Florio on February 21, 2008, 11:46 p.m.

Art Monk never displayed the behavior that we've come to expect from receivers. Monk wasn't brash, he wasn't loud, and he didn't draw attention to himself.

Instead, he did his job, did it well, and waited for the next opportunity to do it again.

His reward for humility? Until this year, he got lost in the shuffle when it came to qualifying for Canton.

But that won't happen to him here. The award we give out each year to the guy whom we regard as the best receiver in the NFL will be named for Monk.

The first recipient is Giants receiver Plaxico Burress.

Burress suffered torn ankle ligaments in Week Two of the 2007 NFL season. He didn't whine, he didn't complain. Instead, he did his job, did it well, and waited for the next opportunity to do it again...

News!

Maske comes in the clutch as usual....

Posted by: 4thFloor | February 22, 2008 12:58 PM

I think he would get hurt, safteys do alot more hitting that cb's do. He can still cover really well, smoot stepped up big last year I hope he does the same this year.

Posted by: SAK2 | February 22, 2008 12:58 PM

Also - Resigning Rock is kind of a No Brainer. Special Teams is key in todays NFL. Rock knows his role and he knows it well....

You make a very good point.

Posted by: f_smoot27 | February 22, 2008 1:00 PM

"safety, cornerback, depth on the offensive line and backup quarterback"

That sounds about right. I think we're fine on recievers, especially if Mix comes along.

Posted by: lordtwang | February 22, 2008 1:01 PM

Where's the D-line mention?

Posted by: scampbell1975 | February 22, 2008 1:02 PM

yay rock.

um, hello, defensive end???

surprised he's talking d since he's responsible for results on O. thats a good thing i guess.

Posted by: jwruble | February 22, 2008 1:03 PM

Eh guys - I don't think we are 'ok' at safety.

Posted by: 4thFloor | February 22, 2008 1:03 PM

He listed his positions of need as safety, cornerback, depth on the offensive line and backup quarterback.

Still think DL has to be a "position of need".

Posted by: kerzon417 | February 22, 2008 1:04 PM

Hey Zorn, You for got D-LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: redryan400 | February 22, 2008 1:05 PM

Has anyone heard the Lavar comments on the JT show? Very very interesting.........

Posted by: 4thFloor | February 22, 2008 1:06 PM

i'd rather judge smoot by his performances where they actually mattered to us...in a redskins uniform. i personally thought he was playing the best football of anyone on the team to end the season, bar none. he was a blanket on those receivers during the post-ST tragedy, and was playing better than every NFC popularity-bowl corner at the time. hopefully he can keep that kind of play up for a whole season.

Posted by: psps23 | February 22, 2008 12:54 PM

Excellent points, psps. We saw the real talent of Smoot in the last month of the season. With Blache's emphasis on CB in his defensive schemes, we should see a lot more top-notch play from Smoot in 2008.

i know we don't have the ST-LL tandem back there anymore, but don't hate on Doughty. I'd take LL-Doughty over the pair of pro-bowl 'girls Hamlin and Williams. Anybody wanna dispute this?

Posted by: psps23 | February 22, 2008 1:06 PM

Zorn may be contempt with the D-Line already.

Agree on Doughty, needs a chance. DB is a must, but not sure before Rd 3.

Where's the D-line mention?

Posted by: scampbell1975 | February 22, 2008 01:02 PM

Zorn was just stating his evaluation preferences. Vinny already has the D-line angle covered.

Posted by: tafka | February 22, 2008 1:08 PM

What's Lavar bumping his gums about now?

Posted by: RedDMV | February 22, 2008 1:09 PM

Lavar is a disgruntled x employee he says he supports GG although it was GG that benched him, making it look like it might have been Gibbs or someone above that benched him. I blame no one but him if he signed a contract that did not have everything listed that he wanted.

Posted by: kmdp4 | February 22, 2008 1:09 PM

He shouldn't be contempt with the D-line, getting old and slow. We get no pressure on the QB, and that hurts our secondary! Someone on the other side of Carter could make a huge difference!

Posted by: redryan400 | February 22, 2008 1:10 PM

4th what did he say?

Posted by: jm220 | February 22, 2008 1:11 PM

Besides, we are now entering the NFL Disinformation Zone. Everyone starts lying at this time of year to throw off everyone else. Dan and Vinny don't want others to know what they are thinking. (Of course, no one else in the NFL really pays attention to what Dan and Vinny are thinking anyway, but eh.)

Posted by: tafka | February 22, 2008 1:11 PM

I have some contempt of our DL!

Posted by: kerzon417 | February 22, 2008 1:11 PM

Last year my school system shafted us on delays and snow days... this year we get off if there's a little ice on your windshield in the morning... this is the second "rain" day we've had this year. Funny how a few school bus accidents can change a superintendent's cancellation policies.

Zorn's speaking through a QB's eye. Corner, Safety, needs his line intact and a good backup

Besides Roy Williams playing for Dallas, why is there so much talk up here like he is garbage or something? Check the his numbers. No one said that he is good in coverage. He looks lost on the regular, but he can play the line of scrimmage very well. Hamlin, is better and more proven than Doughty. With that said, I agree with you that the tandem of Landry/Doughty is better than Williams/Hamlin. To me Laron is better than any of the other three.

Posted by: RedDMV | February 22, 2008 1:16 PM

Roy Williams = Archuleta with better PR

Posted by: tafka | February 22, 2008 1:18 PM

r u kidding me reed must smoke weed...because he is some str8 butt...i dont know how you end up in the nfl and dont kno something as simple as turn and locate the ball...instead of trying to guess when the ball reaches the reciever and tackling him before it gets there....reed is ok...he makes a great backup, but he's nothing more than that...btw he ran like a 4.6+ 40.....i mean there are linebackers that run faster than that...and there def. r recievers and te's faster than that

Posted by: mimic | February 22, 2008 1:19 PM

Doughty is an ok player and I am alright with giving him a chance at starting opposite LL. But you got to play to his strengths and let him near the line of scrimmage and covering TE's/FB's. He is not a great cover guy but I think he was making some strides in that area toward the end of the year. If the CB's are healthy and LL is back in center we should be ok.

Posted by: cdubb | February 22, 2008 1:24 PM

Double Vision had an excellent rookie year. His INTs in the playoff game were crucial, amazing, difference-makers.
He needs to tackle a lot better. He needs to get to the QB when he blitzes -- often seemed like he was content just to occupy a blocker.
I'm not going to worry about the penalties just yet, but I keep seeing him line up for the blow-up hit rather than the wrap-up hit. Not professional grade.

Posted by: daggar | February 22, 2008 1:26 PM

Last year Doughty was listed as the #2 free safety behind Sean Taylor. I dunno ... his style of play seemed more like early season LaRon (i.e., best when in the box). Maybe there is a taller, faster, softer handed "free" safety kinda guy out there. That said, I think the safety problem is more about depth than Landry and Doughty. The going out/breaking up/going out with Stoutmire got a little embarrassing. Prioleau never seemed fully back, and the coach love for Fox seemed intermittent. Bottom line: Sean Taylor was the best guy on the team regardless of position and it was a terrible loss for tons of different reasons on many different levels. Bottom line part two: I love watching LaRon Landry play.

4th, you've gotta post what ya heard...if you're playing, "how to keep a moron in suspense" with me, then you've won....

Posted by: gregmarino88 | February 22, 2008 1:32 PM

Roy Williams = Archuleta with better PR

Posted by: tafka | February 22, 2008 01:18 PM

I can agree with that. But Roy Williams has more career INT's than Archuleta. But Archuleta has more career tackles. Doughty IMO is undersized for a SS at 205 lbs. and he is slow. I think someone posted that his 40 time is 4.6 or something.

Posted by: RedDMV | February 22, 2008 1:33 PM

Has Blache said anything about keeping the same defensive scheme? I know he's a ManBoobs guy, but has actually come out and said what his defense will look like?

I'm excited about the potential for a more entertaining offense, but not at the expense of a struggling defense. I'd be a Saints or Bengals fan if that's the case.

Posted by: Dorf | February 22, 2008 1:34 PM

I like to imagine Zorn always referring to himself in the third person, and only using his last name.

"It's an honor for Zorn to be a part of this organization... Zorn is really excited to get this new offense installed... Zorn's feelings were hurt when Sally implied that he has hair like a horse...

"Zorn sad."

Also, and I cannot stress this enough, I only trust real estate-related rumours up here when they are attributed to the nickname "longandfoster".

Posted by: NateinthePDX | February 22, 2008 1:43 PM

Vinny's comments on the Radio weren't exactly consistent with these...
He mentioned that they needed: FB, CB, WR, DT (with pass rush ability), O-line G and OT (preferably a player that can play both C & G or can play G and OT,

Posted by: EinVB | February 22, 2008 1:44 PM

And besides, where is Lisa to respond to this scurrilous rumour about her boy Springs?

Posted by: NateinthePDX | February 22, 2008 1:44 PM

Does anyone think that it is odd that we never use the frachise tag on anyone?

I think they need safety depth more than safety help and with three to four solid Db's you can always float a db to free and move laron to Strong on certain packages

Posted by: keithfbutler | February 22, 2008 1:44 PM

I'm surprised he didn't say anything about the defensive line.

Posted by: stwasm | February 22, 2008 1:47 PM

It didn't really work that well with Stephen Davis. I still hold to the notion that if Davis was Gibbs' running back (Davis 1999, not Davis of the present) it'd be the second coming of Riggo!

But then I'm reminded of the Dallas fumble... you know what, I'm just looking forward from here on out.

Posted by: Dorf | February 22, 2008 1:47 PM

I would agree that hopefully they aren't looking to draft another Safety in the 1st (or 2nd at that) round. Doughty is smart and can certainly hold his own.

Safety should be about depth concern. Pick-up and decent vet FA for depth or draft one in rounds 5-7 if need be...

Posted by: tafka | February 22, 2008 1:47 PM

keithbutler, all of the Skins starters are under contract, hence no need to tag.

Dorf, Blache said something like "same same" and in response to a question about whether they would blitz or more less, said "depends on who we're playing."

RedDMV, do you really work at the DMV? On of my (many) favorite lines from The Simpsons is from Patty (or Selma) to Bart about working at the DMV, "Some days, we don't let the line move at all ... we call those 'week days' ... hah hah hah cough."

Posted by: dcsween | February 22, 2008 1:49 PM

Doughty played really well after he got smoked by the Girlz. He's smart, likes contact. He is a bit slow at 4.7 40 time. (Although I couldn't run that anymore)

ALL REPOSTED!! Why didn't anyone "Beep-Beep" the last entry? I feel silly and unappreciated--CORKCZAR

About the DRAFT and FAs

My advice? (yeah, like who asked for it?) Get a reasonably priced DB and big receiver in FA ( 'skins can't draft WRs, remember?), and use the draft to rebuild the lines.

Um, why aren't Tom Brady, greatest QB EVER!, and R. Moss, greatest receiver EVER! celebrating with Bill Belichick, greatest coach EVER!???

Giants D-line beat Pats O-line. Pure and simple. Give The Hoody all the camcorders he wants, it won't change the fact that lines win championships.

In a couple of years the DEs and OL of the skins will be ancient. And the Brigg's and '6'5" receivers obtained this year won't matter.

If Snyderatto grab for headlines again and bring in some overpriced and under motivated FA AGAIN, it just means more of the same mismanagement, and more years of Locusts at Redskin Park.

No one is taking a shot at you, and he apoligized anyway. Unless...hey, wait a minute, are you two conspiring on some underground absurdist humor? Yeah...that's the ticket.

It's only football. We're skin fans. We dang well better learn to laugh. My Lord Dan SNYDER owns the team, and made millions upon millions and isn't bright enough to fire Vinnie Ceratto?

Now THAT's funny.

How did 54 comments go by without anyone mentioning the Springsteen reference? "Is there anybody alive out there?" is from the new Bruce CD (I still want to say album, but I guess I would date myself...then again, I'm a Bruce fan so you know I'm not too young). Anyway, the disc is called "Magic" and my favorite songs on there are "Gypsy Biker" and "Magic". It's a very, very good CD from Bruce.

Okay, someone help me out please with the Shawn Springs situation. What is going on? I keep hearing he will be released because he doesn't want to renegotiate his contract so what's the latest?

Posted by: jalba | February 26, 2008 1:38 PM

im not so sold on doughty and really dont want to see him as our starter going into next season. i think we should bring in someone a little more proven, and whoever suggested moving springs to safety is a f-ing retard. springs is the best corner we have, why would you want to loose that.
