Jim Zorn, Take Heart
We all remember Jim Zorn's "maroon, black and yellow" gaffe at the introductory news conference. Apparently, he's not the only one who struggles to identify Redskins team colors ... (From video man Jonathan Forsythe, who spent a week at Nats spring training):
PS -- If you're curious what the die-hard Nats fans who comment on Nationals Journal think of this video, check out the comments. I smell a feud in the Marc Fisher-vs.-the-soccer-fans vein ...

Also love that I can't identify more than like two of these dudes. Ladies and gentlemen, you 2008 Washington Nationals! :)

Nate- You mentioned something about your Wahoos and the Elite Eight. Well, wouldn't you know it...they've actually made the Elite Eight in the CBI. Yes, the CBI. You know, the College Basketball Invitational. For those teams not good enough for the NCAA tourney or the NIT. I can hear it now..."We're number 98, we're number 98!!"

After the win last night, you cannot dispute that UVa is one of the best 16-15 teams in the country, 4-12.
I have them in the Elite Eight of all three tourneys, that's how confident I am in these plucky lads and their exemplary stick-to-it-ive-ness.

Boy that reminds me, its been a long time since my last Senators game, it seems they've changed the uniform.

Do baseball players take the Wunderlic test and, if so, do they consider it good to have a high score or a low score?
Posted by: talent_evaluator | March 19, 2008 1:04 PM
I beleive its a foregone conclusion we will take a QB at some point in this draft (Vinny alluded to this in an interview and we currently only have two QBs on the roster. Also, it just plain makes sense. Its a wise strategy to draft a QB every year in the lower rounds. If the guy is even half-good, there is always a team that will be willing to trade you a higher draft pick to take a gamble on him.)
That being said, what round would we likely take one, and who are our options there?
I don't know any names, but my guess is we take a QB in the 5th round. I cant see us taking one higher as we have too many needs to fill; and any QB taken lower than that is going to be garbage (ie jordan palmer). You can usually get decent reserve linemen and special teamers in the 6th and 7th rounds. So my guess is the 5th round.

The Nationals not only wouldn't pass a Wonderlic test, they wouldn't pass the Bradshaw test.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) - The Rev. Al Sharpton's organization says Canton has not addressed complaints of police misconduct, so the civil rights group will ask the NFL to cancel this summer's Hall of Fame game in the city.
Richard Jones heads the local chapter of the National Action Network, founded by Sharpton. Jones says the group also will publish contact information for black NFL stars so they can be urged to put pressure on the league.
The Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins are scheduled to play in the Hall of Fame game August 3rd in Canton.
A spokesman for Canton Mayor William Healy II says the call for the NFL to cancel the game comes as a surprise. Spokesman Adam Herman says Healy wants to meet with Jones.

How about those Nats!
(Geesh, why do I hear a high-pitched whine in my ears?)
Posted by: _Stumped_ | March 19, 2008 2:45 PM
Here is the plan to actually focus on the draft. We need to generate picks, dump the losers, dump the egos, dump the old timers...
Trade Jason Campbell
Trade Clinton Portis
Trade Marcus Washington
Trade Santana Moss
Trade Jon Jansen
Lets look at these guys a little closer:
CAMPBELL is 27 years old and has only thrown 22 TDs in his career. Tony Romo has been in the league the same number of years, is the same age, has started the same number of games, and has 55 TDs. That is more than double that of Jason Campbell. Jason Campbell will never amount to anything in this league. He is trade bait.
As for the rest of my trade list, they are all players that were once very good at their position, but all now lack the home run hitting ability. Trade them now, before they fade away completely. Infuse new talent with a massive draft...
MOSS was a dud last year. He caught 3 TDs, plus dropped passes and fumbled away the most important game of the early part of last season. This compares to the 34 TDs the rest of his career. He's toast.
PORTIS had the most carries of any backs last season. He only scored 11 TDs out of all those carries. His longest run was a measly 32 yards. His average was 3.9 yds/carry. Compare that with 4.5 yds/carry for his career! Bail on him now, and get something in return. Betts can carry the load.
WASHINGTON had 48 tackles last year. Need I say more?
JANSEN is way too fragile. He cannot make it past the first couple of games, let alone an entire season.
It makes perfect sense to trade these guys. They are all aging fast. They've all showed that they are on the down slides of their career. And in the NFL, once you make that turn for the down slide, the bottom comes very very fast.
If we trade these players, the new team will absorb the salary cap hit. We only take a hit, if we cut them. Plus, rookies get smaller contracts. If we have any hit from trading these players, it will be offset in the long run by the smaller incentive based rookie contracts.
We trade them for picks, package the picks and trade them, move up to better spots, and infuse young hungry blood into this mediocre underachieving team.
Posted by: Sports_Guru | March 19, 2008 2:47 PM
montessori university? I think I should be offended.
I hope you realize my UVa stuff is all tongue in cheek. I was sensitive to the level of snobbery evident on that campus (sorry, Grounds). It's a great school, but I think I could have a good or bad school experience just about anywhere... and that leaves out whatever is meant by "education" anyway...
blah blah blog. Man, this refreshing burst of jibba jabba is waaaaaay better than making up offseason fubbal topics, ain't it?

(No, just kidding.)
Posted by: _Stumped_ | March 19, 2008 2:56 PM
tafka,
If we don't bite the bullet at some point, we will remain in the salary cap position we've always been in. We've already restructured all these contracts. There is no relief by simply pretending we didn;t have a free agency period.
Any hits we take will be offset by the cheaper incentive laiden rookie contracts.
We need to trade the dead weight, not extend their contracts to 2012 to get cap space now and next year.
Posted by: Sports_Guru | March 19, 2008 2:57 PM
I'm Sports_Guru. People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I enjoy ice cream and a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me I have an I.Q. of 48 and that I am considered mentally retarded.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 19, 2008 3:00 PM
Sports_Guru,
I agree with some what you say. Unfortunately, nobody would give us anything for most of those old players you want to trade and their contracts make it impossible due to salary cap ramifications. I think trading Campbell now would be a good idea. He has some value. I think after this year his value will be much decreased. I predict a 7-9 record for the Skins this year and I repeat my earlier thought that Gibbs left because he could see the writing on the wall: the team is over the hill and rebuilding is indicated. I think that is the real reason why Vinny and Dan did't bother to get any free agents this year too.

Tabling the Sorts_Guru bloodletting just for a moment, I have been favorably impressed with the FO, of late.
Having washed the slate clean following Sean Taylor's death, there has been only one gaff, the Coach Search debacle, which was mostly a PR blow-up. Presumably this is why they kicked the PR guy to the curb. God only knows what he was thinking during that mess.

Sports_Guru, The cap hit to trade Portis is about $20 million. (Trades accelerate ALL bonus money not previously accounted for - immediately.) The Redskins have about $8 million in cap space currently. Who are you going to cut just so you can trade Portis?
Posted by: tafka | March 19, 2008 3:02 PM
People get emotionally attached to players, like Moss, Portis, Campbell, etc...
They feel like if we keep the same faces around, we will have the same time honored tradition we had in the 80's with Gibbs 1.0
Guess what!
The ways of the old are over! There is a new era, and it doesn't involve hanging on to aging players for the sake of fan attachment.
