Nothing Doing At Redskins Park
Vinny Cerrato and Karl Swanson are interviewing candidates for the vacant director of PR position, with more interviews scheduled for tomorrow..
Skins have no free agent visits planned (they told free agent safety Will Demps he could come in for a visit during talks with his agent over the wekeend, sources said, but we'll see when or if that happens)>
That's it. Pretty quiet. Quite weird, but as a worn-out beat schlub I ain't compaining. I could get used to this.

Anyone know if there are any college pro-day's scheduled today?
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 2:31 PM
For Gregmarino -
21. Washington Redskins -- Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State
Record: 9-7 | Needs: WR, S, DE, OT, CB
Previous mock selection: Phillip Merling, DE, Clemson
The Redskins' top priority is adding a playmaking receiver to the roster. There projects to be a run of wide receivers in the bottom half of the first round, so the Redskins should get involved here before they get shut out. Thomas might not have the ideal size Washington is looking for, but he's a well-built wide out with strong hands and excellent run-after-catch ability.

When are they going to interview Jasno for the vacant PR job? And, do they "interview" him or will he "visit"?

Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 2:38 PM
taf, much thanks man.
I'm ok with that. From everything I've been reading on Thomas, he'd fit the bigger receiver that they're wanting, he'd return punts, he'd return kicks, he's got some great hands. I think if some of the usual suspects are gone at 21, Otah, and any of the Defensive ends that can out run a sun dial, I'd be more than ok with this pick. They could use their 2nd on a DT, which might be less of a reach than trying to get one in the first.

On the ESPN free agent tracker, if you sort by 2007 team, they don't list all of the current Skins free agents. The Skins FAs are not listed in alphabetical order, but they SEEM like they list the guys who they Skins should think about re-signing for depth. Though I'm not an "insider" there, I see at the bottom that they assign a "score" to each free agent. I also see that The Todd is the first Skins FA on their list. Also near the top (maybe third guy listed?) is Fabini. I haven't thought much about Fabini, and I know he used to be a tackle forever on the Jets, but filled in competently (in some cases very well) for Samuels ... a move that Todd Wade didn't transition so well.
Any thoughts on Fabini as the #3 guard while they "train up" whoever they get in the draft? I know Fabini is long in the tooth ... but so is Kendall. Also, Fabini is monster big (6'7"), which is for some reason what the Skins wanted (height) when they initially drafted and then tried to replace Dockery.
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 3:12 PM
Swwen,
Word on the street is that Fabini may end up in Miami. He is a Parcells' guy from way back, and follows Parcells around like a puppy.
Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 3:15 PM
Seriously, regarding taking a wide-out at 21, if everyone else worth the 21st pick in the draft if gone, and the team explores trading back, and is uable to do so, I'm ok with taking Devin Thomas.
He could fill a number of roles, starting with the #3 wide-receiver, KR, and PR.
Thoughts...
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 03:06 PM
I dunno, maybe wide receiver and kick returner, but I think its too much to ask of a rookie to do public relations for the Skins. They need a professional for that.
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 3:15 PM
Devin Thomas seems like a good choice if Vinny decides to go WR with the 1st pick. It seems like he would drop right into the kickoff return team, based on his college numbers. I don't know about the punting game for him. He didn't do very much of that in college. The thing about both Devin Thomas and Jordy Nelson is that they appear to have really good hands, catching everything near them. Both looked good at the Combine and on limited film. Nelson also seemed to have success with punts, based on limited experience.
The one thing that is rarely discussed about these WR draft prospects is their route running. Based on the demands of the West Coast offense, I would expect Zorn to put big emphasis on this for anyone being considered in the draft.
Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 3:28 PM
Are there any ESPN insiders here who might be able to confirm/refute my guess that the order of the 2007 Skins listed is based on the ESPN "score" for that player? [Actually, Fabini is #7 of 8 listed ... and The Todd is in the middle somewhere ... the #1 guy is Ethan Albright.]
If I'm right, my suspicions are confirmed that Derrick Frost is not the bee's proverbial knees.
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 3:28 PM
I think mdjwxyz and kost are espn insiders.
Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 3:33 PM
sween - The FA tracker is actually listed alphabetically by last name. The score that ESPN gives is a rating of the player. The best score on our FA is a 60 for Albright. The 60's are for an average starter. The 50's for a good back up.

The exact origin of "bee's knees" remains a topic of debate, but there is wide-spread agreement that the phrase first appeared in North America during the 1920s. Some interesting theories are listed below.
Bees carry pollen back to the hive in sacs on their legs. The allusion is to the concentrated goodness to be found around the bee's knee. (extract from the Phrase Finder).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The expression was coined in the 1920s by an American cartoonist named Tad Dorgan, who also graced the language with such corny superlatives as "the cat's pajamas" and less durable ones such as the "the flea's eyebrows" and - a real clunker - "the canary's tusks." Dorgan also came up with: "Yes, we have no bananas." I've long been puzzled why, to this day, the bee's knees expression has maintained a certain currency in Britain, something it has not had for decades in the United States. The thought occurs that perhaps, more than half a century on, it's a still lingering cultural artifact from the American occupation of the south of England in the lead-up to D-Day. (extract from the Guardian's Notes and Queries site, article by Dave Todd)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's one of a set of nonsense catchphrases that originated in North America in the 1920s, the period of the flappers, nearly all of which compared some thing of excellent quality to a part of an animal. (extract from Michael Quinon's World Wide Words).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the idea is that on a bee, knees are strictly a luxury. The phrase originated in 1920s U.S. slang, which had a whole slue of such phrases: "the eel's ankle", "the flea's eyebrows", "the clam's garter", "the snake's hips", "the elephant's instep", "the kipper's knickers", "the cat's pyjamas", "the canary's tusks", "the sardine's whiskers". The fact that "the bee's knees" rhymes may have assisted its survival. (extract from the aue archives, article by Mark Israel)original article
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bee's knees is actually a development from something that was originally stated as "The be all and the end all of everything." this being rather long, was shortened to "the B's and E's" which eventually became "the bee's knees" (extract from the Guardian's Notes and Queries site, article by "Ogins")
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My _Dictionary of American Slang_ says "bee's knees" was a fad started c1924. Like some Chinese menus, pick one from column A and one from column B... (extract from the aue archives, article by Robert Keller)original article
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...[the] _bee's knees_ may be a humorous pronunciation of _business_. I have seen this offered as a genuine derivation and it seems as plausible as the current favourite for _OK_. (from the aue archives, article by S. Z. Hanley)original article

There was an important note attached to the Mock Draft by Todd McShay. Let's hope he's right - it could be a good thing.
"While I still value Brohm as a first-rounder, there simply was not a good fit for the former Louisville quarterback in this mock draft. When all is said and done, though, my guess is that a team like the Falcons, Ravens, Bears or Panthers will trade back into the bottom half of the first round in order to secure Brohm, just as the Browns did in order to get Brady Quinn last season."
Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 3:35 PM
There are some questionable omissions from McShay's first round. Calais Campbell?
Posted by: post | March 3, 2008 3:43 PM
after 33 years at WMAL-AM 630, radio host Chris Core was fired last friday. I haven't seen anything about that radio station in a long time. anyone in DC know if they still air the Redskins games?
Posted by: _Superman_ | March 3, 2008 3:43 PM
If the Redskins trade out of the first, the least I would want to gain out of that would be a second as well as a third round pick this year.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 3:45 PM
sam3, thx for the info (prime time jibba jabba that). I knew that bee's knees meant something good. Now the term has modern meaning, esp. after the so-called "Africanized killer bees" that were going to take over Texas all got capped by the Gilooley-like bee mites that have been knocking out North American hives.
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 3:45 PM
post, McShay essentially said Calais Campbell fell out of his (McShay's) mockery:
"OTs Ryan Clady, Chris Williams and Jeff Otah moved up from their spots in the last mock draft, mostly due to team needs. OLB Keith Rivers, RB Rashard Mendenhall and OG Branden Albert are also on the rise. Conversely, QB Brian Brohm, DE Calais Campbell and OT Sam Baker all fell out of the first round."
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 3:47 PM
post, at this point in time, Campbell would be lucky to get picked in the second round. Have you seen his times from his pro-day, and the combine? That, combined with his benching like a corner, has him dropping like a rock.

Posted by: kmdp4 | March 3, 2008 4:01 PM
The Jets also signed Damien Woody to a 5 year 25 million dollar deal??? My only question is are they operating under the same salary cap as the rest of the league?
That and, Damien Woody sucked for the lions, throwing more money at him just makes him a higher paid lousy player.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 4:04 PM
Greg, glad we didn't deal at that number, that's waaay too high.
Whoever put Matt Ryan up at #1 for Miami, no chance. If we stay at #1 we take Chris Long.
Posted by: Redcoat | March 3, 2008 4:07 PM
The Jests certainly are going nuts this offseason. They must have decided they were close enough to the Pats to be worth trying to compete with them for the AFC East next year.
Good luck with that. :-)
sams, terrific work on the bees knees. Would you help me do the same research on an old Northern English colloquial phrase: "the donkey's knob"?
Posted by: Redcoat | March 3, 2008 4:09 PM
Redcoat,
Do these people having Miami taking a QB even no who parcells is, he is not going to take a QB.
Chris Long will be a workhorse for Miami for the next 10yrs, as long as he does not get injured.
Posted by: kmdp4 | March 3, 2008 4:11 PM
That, combined with his benching like a corner, has him dropping like a rock.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 03:49 PM
However, if he'd been able to bench like a Rock (Cartwright) he'd have risen like some sort of gigantic rising thing! Like such as, maps, etc.
Posted by: Redcoat | March 3, 2008 4:11 PM
RC, agreed, considering that he's got 14 sacks in a 5 year career, WAY, WAY too much money. Although I do think that he is trending upwards. That is, versus Tommy Kelly, who is trending no where.....
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 4:13 PM
Taking Long is the main reason why I think Jason Taylor will stay. He can learn a lot from JT and we will instantly improve our D.
If we get him our games against the Pats might actually be interesting next season!
Posted by: Redcoat | March 3, 2008 4:15 PM
Agreed Greg, and if he'd been the last piece to make us a contender then maybe we go for him, but we still have a LOT of 'positions of need' to fill....

This makes no sense (from Taylor's perspective). If Long could learn alot from Taylor, why would TAYLOR want to stay? That's like saying the main reason McNabb would stay in Philly would be because Kolbe could learn alot from him.
I thought Jason Taylor had a list of gripes, not the least of which is the money being spent around him and not on him ...
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 4:31 PM
rr(sw/it), from what I can tell, the 49ers are doing it again this season too.
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 4:32 PM
Agree with you Ricky. I think they're feeling the pressure of the Pats and Gints 2007 and they're responding by opneing the cheque book.
We'll see if it works for them, but I don't see that it will.
Posted by: Redcoat | March 3, 2008 4:32 PM
Right now it seems like both the Giants and Pats have gotten fleeced of players. The Pats have lost Samuel(starter), Gay, Stallworth(starter), Eugene Wilson, and possibly Gaffney(Starter). The Giants have lost Gibril Wilson(starter) and a starting linebacker.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 4:37 PM
Where did Eugene Wilson go? I must have missed that.

Taylor has 2 years left on his Fins contract. He's also moved to LA to live at least until May (when his "Dancing with the Stars" gig finishes) and therefore would miss early pre-season with ANY team he joins.
The Fins will let him do that, but I'm not sure anyone else (who would presumably acquire him to try to win it all) would be so indulgent, as they'd have to pay him a boatload of money too.
This way he gets to mentor Long next year and probably play alongside him for the last one, maybe two years (after 2008). If Parcells has convinced him that 2008 is rebuilding and 2009/10 are years to contend, he may decide he wants to be part of it.
I think if he decides that he will be in Miami until he retires and they will minimally redo his contract to give him some incentives to keep going (he already gets GOOD money, just not Porter money)
Posted by: Redcoat | March 3, 2008 4:42 PM
bcb, the pats opted not to resign him. He's unsigned at the moment.
Posted by: gregmarino88 | March 3, 2008 4:46 PM
greg - You'd think I'd known that about Wilson seeing as I'm in Pats country with you. Real life is interfering with fun stuff lately. Such a shame.
Posted by: BCBarney | March 3, 2008 4:53 PM
Redcoat, I'm still not getting your point. Initially, it seemed like the reason Jason Taylor would stay in Miami would be if the Fins drafted Chris Long. From what you're saying now, the reason he'd stay in Miami would be because the Fins are willing to indulge his dancing with stars and pay him good (but not Joey Porter good) money. I don't see what the latter has to do with the former.
Posted by: dcsween | March 3, 2008 5:18 PM
I tell you what, pre-combine I was massively on the Calais Campbell bandwagon, but after a poor combine, and an even worse Pro-Day, I'm not sure if I'd want to use out 2nd Rnd Pick on him!

Been remiss in posting regularly for the past few days...did I miss anything free agent wise with the 'Skins? With anyone else? Barno sightings? Rooney Rule discussions?
I have no excuse except that I was up in Whistler continuing my private snowboarding lessons (after 6 lessons and 5 solo trips to the mountain, I can do the double black runs pretty self sufficiently now) and interviewing (gasp!) for a job for the first time in 13 years. Two things are certain at this point: I love snowboarding, I hate jobs.
Carry on.
(and, no, Dorf, I have not seen "Semi-Pro" and likely won't unless the buzz improves. "Old School" and "Anchorman" are legendary in my mind, but the ice skating one and some of WF's others are terrible and unwatchable). I was introduced (briefly) to "Beerfest" last week (I know, not WF) and I think it's a moral imperative that I watch it ASAP.)

That's awful! Chris Core was great. Some of my earliest memories are of being in the car with my dad, and him listening to either Harden & Weaver in the morning or Trumbull & Core in the afternoon. When I still lived in Virginia, WMAL was pretty much the only station I had any use for, save for WJFK a couple of summers during college when I was going through my Don & Mike phase.

Free agent WR Johnson visits Bills
Leo Roth
Staff writer
(March 3, 2008) -- Free agent Bryant Johnson knows all about the Buffalo Bills' need for a big wide receiver to play opposite Lee Evans.
Owner Ralph Wilson has talked about it and so has coach Dick Jauron.
"Yes, that's something that I've heard and is the reason why I'm here,'' the 6-3 Johnson told reporters today after visiting with coaches and front office staff at One Bills Drive.
Johnson, who has plans to visit other teams, including the Washington Redskins, said he wouldn't mind if those plans got canceled after liking what he saw and heard in Buffalo. He said his agent would speak with Bills officials about a potential contract.
"I definitely think I fit in good with the Bills,'' Johnson said. "Hopefully I won't have to take any more visits after I leave here. My agent is going to talk with them (the Bills) and hopefully we can work something out and make both of us happy.''
Johnson, a five-year veteran, has 210 career catches for 2,675 yards and nine touchdowns. A first-round pick out of Penn State in 2003, he has played third fiddle to Pro Bowlers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald with the Cardinals and is looking for a team where he can play a bigger role.
"I'm definitely eager to get more opportunities to show my ability and I definitely think this is a good place to do so,'' Johnson said.
For those interested in Johnson.

From Bryant Johnson's perspective, its like "should be the opposite to one guy, Lee Evans, or two, Santanadannadanna Moss and Antwaan Randel-El?"

Alternatively, maybe The Owner's money is the new "Canadian money" ... and Johnson is thinking that, after the Bills move to Toronto, he will get paid in the actual "new Canadian money".

Willis MaGahee loved his time there.

"I definitely think I fit in good with the Bills,'' Johnson said. "Hopefully I won't have to take any more visits after I leave here. ..."
Johnson explained to his agent that he was a little worried about interviewing in Washington, based on his understanding of a process requiring an overnight stay in the owner's guest house and recurring interruptions requiring review of game film.

Don't know if this has been posted:
JUST TALKED TO JOHNSON: Just had the opportunity to talk to Bryant Johnson when he had a few minutes free on his visit. We'll have the whole interview on the multimedia page in about 20 minutes or so. I'll provide the link here in my blog when it's ready.
Johnson is definitely interested in the Bills as a potential employer. Advantages for the Bills, they have a #2 WR role open for the taking. Receivers coach Tyke Tolbert was his receivers coach in Arizona his rookie year so there's some familiarity there.
The only negative is Johnson does have another visit scheduled and it's with the Redskins.
Here was one of his more interesting comments from my conversation with him.
Does he see the Bills as a potential fit?
"Definitely a potential fit. They need help on the outside. I feel like I can come in and help on the outside. I like the Bills. I used to watch the Bills a lot back when they went to every Super Bowl in the early 90's. It's a nice facility, I'm enjoying my tour. I definitely like the town. I look forward to hopefully becoming a Buffalo Bill."

Byner To Be Hired As Running Backs Coach
Staff Report March 3, 2008
The Titans will hire former Redskins assistant Earnest Byner as running backs coach, The Tennessean reported Monday evening.
An official announcement is expected in the coming days.
Byner will replace Sherman Smith, who became Redskins offensive coordinator last month.
Byner was a part of the Redskins staff the past four years but was let go after the resignation of Head Coach Joe Gibbs.
Byner played running back for 14 NFL seasons with Cleveland, Washington and Baltimore, rushing for 8,261 yards and 56 touchdowns. He's perhaps best known for ''The Fumble'' in the AFC Championship Game, when as a Brown he fumbled near the goal line against the Broncos.
Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher also interviewed former Chargers assistant Matt Simon and the Jaguars denied him permission to speak to running backs coach Kennedy Pola.
The Tennessean could not reach Fisher for comment on Monday afternoon.

Excerpt:
Expected Draft Placement Henne is currently fighting to be the second quarterback taken in the draft along with University of Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, University of Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco and University of Kentucky quarterback Andre' Woodson. However, it is unlikely that Henne will be taken in the first round. His name will likely be called in either the second or third round.
During the NFL Scouting Combine, Henne said he met with the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins. Teams that will likely be interested in Henne are ones that either have an aging starter that can help groom Henne into an NFL starter or a team that have question marks at quarterback and can bring the Michigan quarterback in to compete for the top spot early in his career.

The facts don't line up with the analysis, both Dallas and Washington have young QBs with bright futures.

Stumped, you're right, I reckon both teams would just be grading Henne (as they will the other top-line QB's) just in case a team tries to trade up to get a QB, which is something that happened a couple of times last year.

The only way Henne gets drafted by us is to fulfill my fantasy-league All-Michigan team.
When Tyler Ecker got drafted, I began to wonder about the power of suggestion. If Henne gets picked, I'll definitely start worrying.
Now Jamar Adams (S) isn't quite that much of a reach. And Shawn Crable reminds me a bit of Lavar -- a solid OLB that can really blow things up.

This is the time of year the draft spin machines begin to crank up.
There should be a lot of draft mockeries and travesties forthcoming.

Watch out for Quetin Groves out of Auburn. He played all season with three dislocated toes and still had a great year.
Posted by: shanteefamilee | March 3, 2008 7:35 PM
I've heard a few 'experts' saying that teams such as Chicago, Baltimore and Atlanta would be best served to copy what Cleveland did last draft, overlook the QB with their first pick, but then trade back into the first round at a later point, and take a QB then.
Posted by: kost52 | March 3, 2008 7:38 PM
Not sure about Groves, he's more of a 3-4 LB, don't think he suits our system.
Posted by: kost52 | March 3, 2008 7:40 PM
'During the NFL Scouting Combine, Henne said he met with the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins.'
My first reaction was that this is idiocy. In fact those are two of the last places Henne fits. We are set with franchise like QB (or if not we blow but all signs are positive). Collins as #2. So if you really want a long term rookie prospect try it in the 5th round or something. I know it didn't work out with baby Palmer but always try to find the next
Cowboys while slightly different have picked their guy too (they are worse off because they already paid him, but otherwise I think probably feeling about as good as us in terms of future growth)
So I think _stumped is right- this is gaming the potential draft day maneuvers.

Quentin Groves is now being listed as a linebacker, rather than as an end, by Draft Scout. Even guys like Gholston and Long are being looked at as possible OLBs in a 3-4 alignment, although they are very capable of playing DE in a 4-3. Look for Groves to go to a 3-4 team and be an OLB.
So who was it that wanted Calais Campbell? He seems like the classic underachiever. How about someone who is a classic 4-3 DE/DT like Daniels, almost as big as Calais, and will still be available in the 3rd round? Take a look at Kendall Langford of Hampton.

That Brant Johnson guy sure sounds like he doesn't want to be with the Redskins. How desperate can someone be to want to be signed by Buffalo? Bad team, bad (cheap) owner, bad city, bad location, bad weather.
Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 8:47 PM
I get it now. Bryant Johnson is originally from Baltimore (probably grew up hating DC) and then played at Penn State (Redskins were mean to LaVar) and went pro with the Cardinals (who beat the Redskins once about 25 years ago). No wonder he wants to go to Buffalo.
Posted by: tafka | March 3, 2008 8:51 PM
tafka, I'll admit I was pro-Calais Campbell, wow, they say that the combine and pro-days don't really count for much and that they're more of a tool, but I think some of his results were enough to scare a bunch of teams off. I think the only DE I'd take in the 1st(who may be available) is Derrick Harvey, other than him, I'm looking elsewhere.

" .... No wonder he wants to go to Buffalo."--POSTER
Try this on for a statement.
"Ah man, Buffalo, are you kidding me? The weather? The market, the owner? All losers. Now I'm going to DC where I just pray God they offer me a minimum contract with no money guaranteed."--Bryant Johnson
Gees people. These agents, they tend to study owners. And, do you think they think Snyder throws money at people he wants and fears he may lose? With any luck, that's changed, but....
I think this might be a good pickup, but not breaking the bank for him.

Calais Campbell really reads like the classic underachiever with tons of potential. His 2007 results were down in almost every category from 2006. (If Miami was a worse team in 2007, then a great defensive player should have better stats, being on the field more often.) Seeing him run and do drills at the Combine wasn't awe-inspiring either. He looked like the least athletic guy on the field.
The Redskins just got rid of another player who was/is a classic underachiever - Brandon Lloyd. With the high upfront cost of 1st round draft picks these days, underachievers need not get their hopes up. Calais will be lucky to be drafted in the bottom of the 2nd round. (In a random side note, I'm very surprised his Mom didn't name one of Calais' brothers, "Cialis".)

I am with tafka. At first the idea of picking up a plummeting pick (campbell) sounded like the draft day wizardry we are all aching for. But after reading more let's stay away -there are others that will plummet and be more deserved of attention.
