Guest Blog - A Latin Lesson

Last week we had some fun with the Skins nickname contest (Vinny's Vendetta's was my lame attempt). Well Jason Hice came through with some deep Latin stuff, and was kind enough to pass it along. (On a personal note, I managed to avoid taking Latin at Loyola Blakefield, my beloved high school, but regret so now more than ever).

I'll let Jason Hice take over from here:

So...when I saw the suggestion "Vinny, vidi, vici", I thought that it was pretty clever, but since the phrase is conjugated in the past tense, I wondered if it was a bit soon to be comparing Vinny Cerrato to Julius Caesar. As my mind started spooling up in Latin mode - I was fortunate product of the Northern Virginia school system - another phrase came to mind: "In vino veritas" ("In wine there is truth" for the Latin challenged). At first, the simple parts were there, but I soon realized that there was much potential. I believe that the very nature of Vinny's quest is for the truth; not only for the team and fans, but for Mr. Snyder as well.

He is ultimately responsible for what we pursue and strive to accomplish and he will be judged accordingly. "In Vinny veritas" began to sprout many possibilities and translations. If it morphs into "N Vinny veritas", it can be used as the affirmative (In Vinny, there is truth!) or negative - "Non Vinny veritas": In Vinny there isn't truth. It has a certain duality that a good nickname should possess. It can be a compliment or a derisive poke. It can express admiration, frustration, sympathy (yeah, right!), support, mutiny, et cetera. Put a question mark at the end and it becomes a question, an exclamation point and you have an "atta boy!", an elipses and you have a "to be determined". Change a few letters and you spin it other ways (exempli gratia, through Vinny there is truth; with/without Vinny, from Vinny, to Vinny, ad infinitum).

Time will determine if this experimentum crucis gives us a dux bellorum or leaves us crying, "Et tu, Brute?". In any event and ab imo pectore, I am truly hoping that we can soon bestow Mr. Cerrato a monikor such as "Vinny, vidi, vici". Until then, abundans cautela non nocet.

Hail,

Jason

Mornin,

Sweed runs today, don't know what time that happens, but that will go a long way towards sorting out the WR picture in the draft.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | April 9, 2008 8:19 AM

Wow, a question mark at the end of a sentence makes it a question? Deep, man.

What happens when you do it all comic bookish like, "Non Vinny veritas!?!?"

Yet more ambiguity, no?

Good article in the Times today, regarding Mathis:

"An NFL source agreed, saying: "If the kid can stay healthy, he's a weapon. At a minimum salary [deal], what do the Redskins have to lose?"

Perhaps some tarnishing of what former coach Joe Gibbs would call their good name, something owner Dan Snyder claims to treasure. But Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak at last week's NFL meetings assured Cerrato that Mathis isn't big trouble"

For what its worth.

Sorry greg, I think I bumped the "on" switch when I was hurrying into work this morning.

Someone else must have bumped the "open the floodgates and let the moron(s) post" button though. That one wasn't on me.

Posted by: swb | April 9, 2008 9:30 AM

And by "bumped the on button", clearly I meant bumped the off button. Or, I bumped the on button, which turned the on button off.

Uh oh. Now I'm talking to myself again

I am the biggest philly homer in the history of time. Everything I do stinks of bias toward the Iggles. The only topics I write about are topics that I can pass off as opinion but are in someway related to the Iggles. I am the most bitter man that has ever lived. I am from New York but I think I'm from Philly and act accordingly. I have to talk trash on T.O because he wanted to be in Dallas over Phily.

Please explain what this has to do with the Redskins or with your being an "insider."

Thx to Greg for posting the info on Mathis from the Wash Times. Jason... please get back to football. Elfin reported what you should have about Mathis. More inside info, please.

Posted by: chris_zz | April 9, 2008 10:08 AM

At this point in time, I almost expect negative posts when it concerns the team. I mean, when you read the Times, and they have the EXACT opposite reaction that Jason does, as well as some research that was done, how should it be taken?

The Times has a quote from an NFL scout, while Jason has an email from Dan Sullivan.

Whats up Greg,

I can not handle all these idiots posting under different names, that why I have been staying away.

Saw an interesting mock, not sure I agree with all the picks.

21. Washington Redskins: Philip Merling, DE, Clemson

The Skins biggest needs in the 2008 NFL Draft are WR and DE. Philip Merling is a big DE that is capable of both Run stopping and rushing the QB. The skins would love if Merling fell to them because he will be an immediate starter and looks to be a promising pro. Other than Chris Long Merling may be the best run and pass defender. Another player they could go with would be Limas Sweed a good receiver out of Texas.

51. Washington Redskins: Jordy Nelson, WR, K State

Jason Campbell has a few options but could always use more. Jordy Nelson is a good receiver but isn't a very big name. The Skins opt to get Nelson and hope to make the playoffs again in the 2008 NFL Season.

84. Washington Redskins: Mike Pollak, C, Arizona St.

The get a very good Center in this Arizona State Trench beast.

96. Washington Redskins: Craig Seltz, S, LSU

A good player from a great program. Seltz could help add depth to the DB's altogether. I know they got Landry in 2007 but these are two completely different players.

Jasno is a distracted beat writer that wishes he was still BHGO about the World Cup. He despises all the internet dorks up here and throws us scraps to keep Cindy off his back.

Also, I heart Cindy Boren.

Posted by: Dorf | April 9, 2008 10:24 AM

What's wrong with Elfin? When the 'Skins traded for Mathis he (1) interviewed Cerrato; (2) interviewed Mathis; (3) interviewed Rock Cartwright. Then he "reported" what he heard.

I like the way Jasno works much better. Don't interview anyone, just write a blog "Why Sign Jerome Mathis? Don't Ask Me" where you conclude that Joe Gibbs wouldn't have signed Mathis. How do you know that? Did you interview Joe Gibbs?

Jasno, we're not asking you. We're asking Cerrato, Mathis, Cartwright. Call them. Interview them. Call Mathis's old coach and ask him. I would have thought that this is your job, not to sit around your house and hypothesize about what Joe Gibbs would have done.

KM, thanks for posting that. I agree with the first 2 picks, I'd be ecstatic with Merling/Nelson. That C from AZ. State is intriguing, in that he's big/fast. I'd want to see if he could switch over to G.

Where did they have the S from AZ going?? Barnett, I think his name is. If he slides into the third, I'd LOVE to pick him up.

Posted by: U.N.registered | April 9, 2008 10:37 AM

kmdp4, I think we'd all be pretty happy with a draft like that one. D line, O line, WR, secondary. areas of greatest need.

also, "Merlin" or "The Wizard" is a cooler nickname than "Cialis."

I'm not a huge fan of lamp ... but I like Latin. My education today involved this phrase "abundans cautela non nocet" which means something like "abundant caution does not harm." I probably will be forgetting this soon because I'm completely devoid of caution ... which might explain the devasted swath of harm in my wake.

TA, great points. That right there pretty much sums up the difference right now between the Times, and the Post as far as their reporting that is done on the Redskins.

Seems to me like the Times, does their homework, does legwork on stories, and puts out a story that represents what they found out. J-La, doesn't do any legwork, and spins the story to fit his "axe-to-grind" mentality, and takes pot-shots at the ownership.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | April 9, 2008 10:43 AM

I always thought that saying "auribus teneo lupum" would make me seem darkly intelligent and therefore devastatingly attractive to members of the opposite sex, until I realized that actually holding a wolf by the ears was a totally stupid thing to do.

Unless the wolf was dead. Or sleeping. Or otherwise rendered immobile.

I'm flinging my arm off, right now...

KM, if you look at the 10 yard split on Barret, and his cone drill, he's got 'suddenness', he's fast but its that first burst of speed that scouts focus on. That and his ability to change direction. If he's still on board when the Redskins chance to pick comes up, I'd be hard pressed to pass him over.

I watched some NFL Network last night, and Mayock has Balmer as the third rated DT, the closer the draft gets, the more I think he's going to be the guy in round 1.

Balmer
Nelson
Barrett
Keith

I think the idea is that the expressed view of several posters here is that the longcomings (is that right?) of the Times reportage means that they will find the information they so sorely seek, conveyed in a style more sympatico with their leanings NFL-wise.

No, this explains why we should read the Times and not the Post. Why Elfin is doing a better job than Jasno these days. It doesn't explain why we should complain about Jasno on the Times website.

But riddle me this. Where did you learn more about the Mathis transaction -- in Jasno's post or in Elfin's article?

Posted by: registered | April 9, 2008 11:35 AM

person posting as talent evaluator, so you think DT is our BIGGEST need? I think DE is our biggest need, and DT is second biggest need, and then secondary help and O line and WR (where we get into "best player available at any of these positions of need when our pick comes up").

agree to disagree.

Posted by: dcsween | April 9, 2008 11:42 AM

I didn't read Elfin's article. I don't care for the Times.

It DOES exaplain why you should stay with Elfin's coverage and blog if you find his style and information more reflects your needs.

Why come here to complain when you've already stated that someone else has what you need. Just go there instead. Any other action in that case is simply perverse.

Do you go to restaurants you don't like on a regular basis to tell them that you prefer other ones?

Odd.

Also, I think that Greg Blache has, at some point in the past, evaluated talent ... and t_e has been MUCH more active since the off-season started ... talent evaluator = Greg Blache? I'm just sayin ...

To paraphrase a maxim I've heard, you can't please all of the people all of the time. I'm not sure how that might be applied here.

I don't care for the WashTimes in general, but Elfin is all right with me. He was the DC area representative on the HOF selection committee this season, replacing Wilbon (note: I know Post part-timer Lenny Shapiro is an at-large selector), so it was on his watch that Green and Monk were elected. So that's something.

call me crazy, but I think the current DT rotation including whiz kids Muntgumry and Goldstone can hold the line (so to speak) even though they don't give us much of a push... I think an edge rusher opposite Dr. Dre is a bigger need.

what I'm saying is, either Blache doesn't know what he needs, or he's cleverly blowing smoke to throw the people who draft behind us off our trail!

just one anonymous person's opinion, posted on the internet.

Unregistered, I have a question.

What is wrong with wanting to have our cake and eat it too?

We would like to receive "inside" information about the current Redskins happenings (a post about WHY they signed Mathis, rather than speculation that Gibbs wouldn't have signed the dude (the cake)), as well as the great jibba jabba that this blog produces (eating said cake).

No one wants to leave this blog because it's a nice little community that provides good Redskins info (sometimes) and good entertainment. The Elfin blog only produces good info.

I mean, I learned more about what's going on with the Redskins in 2 minutes at the Times site than I have in the past week on the RI blog. But the Times site has no jibba jabba and no community at all, thus the need for the RI blog.

It's great that Jasno can post stuff about the Caps and soccer, that's one of the things I like about this blog. But it'd also be great if he could post a bit about why they signed Mathis (apparently Vinny likes his speed) or that the Redskins, as a team, are up for an award the celebrates their courage.

There shouldn't be a "like what Jasno posts or leave" mentality, that's just silly

More from superior knowledge of European history ... it was Marie Antoinette who said "If there is no bread, let them eat cake and have it too."

You see, people misquote that ... its not about having cake and eating it ... its eating it and having it.

Just sayin'

If that's why people come here, isn't it better to accept that this is how THIS blog works and stop berating it for not being the same as the Times one? That is the bit that makes no sense to me.

How about "RI: come for the jibba-jabba, stay for the occasional, apochryphal Redskins news"?

BTW, let's get something into perspective; what's going on with the Skins right now = very little, exactly the same as practically every other NFL team.

They're all plotting their planned picks and contingencies for the draft, but most of what leaks out will be deliberately misleading to try to manipulate other team's selections wherever possible.

Posted by: | April 9, 2008 11:41 AM

Person posting as nobody,

No, I didn't think that. I was a DE/OL guy, myself. I was suprised when Greg Blache contradicted me.

Two things though. (1) No one shows his cards two weeks before the draft (or ever) in the NFL so this is either mis-information or -- at best -- non-information; (2) Greg Blache spends a lot more time with the team than I do and, if he were accidentally showing his cards, I would defer to his judgement.

I read Jasno bashing as inherently inconsistent with restoration and maintenance of quality jibba jabba, and a distraction. Its not like anyone is going to change anyone's mind (much less Jasno's) about his interpretation of facts and circumstances coming out of the EVP of Football and The Owner. A frankly, having an earnest anti-Jasno rant interrupt quality jj distracts the jj towards directions it would not normally flow. One or maybe two good counter interpretations (including associated swipes at Jasno) is fine ... its the monotony of the on-and-on, summarizing, repeating, restating that gets tired. The love for the other paper's writers is even worse ... its like people who complain about the violence on television (which they won't turn off). People complaining. There is PLENTY of stuff in this world to complain about. Jasno-bashing is a complaint about Jasno's complaints! Complaining about complaining! I don't agree with everything the guy says just because he says (although I admit it often does confirm my own take on situations), but I do take everything I read with a grain of salt. [And my blood sodium is through the roof!] Complaining about complaining is where I pipe up. Its not MERELY hypocrisy ... its a distracting, tiresome, negative, and boring hypocrisy.

OK, now I want to go off on a rant ...

Posted by: dcsween | April 9, 2008 12:20 PM

I agree 100% talent evaluator! I know this is a blog, but I'd prefer journalistic integrity to (mostly negative) personal opinion. Particularly since these reports tend to be picked up by the national media and presented as fact.

Jason has access to the owner, players, and team officials. Like Elfin -- he should act as a representative of the fans by asking them questions and reporting their responses. This doesn't mean the reports have to be one-sided, but I'd prefer the qualitative balance of actual quotes, interviews, statistics vs. personal opinion, unsubstantiated facts, and innuendo.

Hey guys. I have been reading your comments and wanted to clear a few things up:

1) I DO hate the Redskins.
2) Brandon Lloyd was my only source of Redskins information the past couple years. Now that he is gone, I have no idea what is going on with the organization...
3)... Nor do I care. I was watching Sienfield last month - the episode where George Costanza just sat in an office and worked on the Penske file all week and did nothing when it hit me - why don't I do that? So basically right now i'm just coasting a long and seeing how long I can milk this free ride. The other Jason is a solid dude and he does all the real work.
4)I'll let you in on a little secret: I'm not even a real journalist. I went to school for hordiculture and don't know the first thing about journalism.
5)Poolman writes all my articles for me. I don't even proof read them. I just forward them on to an intern who puts the thing in Microsoft word, does a little spell checking, and voila! you've got yourself an article.
6)All my insider info comes from reading posts on extremeskins. Occasionally, when I feel like working, i'll troll their forums and find some speculation and post it on here as news. Hey, it pays the bills, so get off my back.
7)Registration is NEVER coming back. It amuses me to see all of you assuming eachothers identities and acting like children. I mean, what else can you expect from Redskins fans?
8)I hate the Redskins.

Posted by: Don't be mad at me. You walked into that one | April 9, 2008 12:46 PM

My full name is Vincenzo Cerrato. I was born in Flushing, New York.

I played college football at Iowa State University; quarterback and wide receiver.

I tutored under a coach named Lou Holtz. Maybe you've heard of him?

I was with the San Francisco 49ers for nine seasons; drafted players like Ted Washington, Ricky Watters, Dana Stubblefield and Bryant Young.

We went to Super Bowl XXIX in 1995. Our quarterback had a pretty good game that day; six touchdowns, breaking Doug Williams' old record by two.

I was hired by Mr. Snyder in 1999. I have to admit, it's been a rough patch; hard to believe it's been ten years.

Unfortunately, I'm most known for acquiring older big name stars like Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, Irving Fryar, and Mark Carrier. People on the outside may not know this, but I'm not solely responsible for making those picks.

Gregg Williams is to blame for wasting a first round pick on Carlos Rodgers, not me. Adam Archuleta was Gregg's idea too, not mine.

We have a great new coach in Jim Zorn and I've learned my lesson with the whole free agency thing. We're currently rebuilding through the draft.

I truly look forward to helping to bring back the glory to this storied franchise.

I could live with that draft. With some more OL in the later rounds, that would definetely work for me. Like Greg, I think if the Skins pick Balmer (Harvey, Merling and Albert being gone) and go with the rest of your picks it would be awesome.

Virginia OL to visit Dallas Cowboys

12:06 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Virginia OG Branden Albert is slated to visit with the Cowboys next week, one of 30 out-of-area players the team is allowed to host.

The Cowboys don't necessarily have an immediate need at guard, with Pro Bowler Leonard Davis and returning starter Kyle Kosier in the fold, and they haven't taken a lineman in the first round in more than two decades.

[dcsween note: the editor removed the last clause of the original article text, which read " ..., but this season, Jerry Jones figured it was time to fck with the Redskins who pick two spots earlier."]

mtnskinsfan, i like your picks and heres why:

1) Very smart picking up a DE and DL with 2 of our first 3 picks. We truly need to address both positions with players who can contribute immediately and start by the end of the year (at the latest). We have done that with your two picks.

2) I like going OL with our 2nd rounder IF neither Hardy or Nelson are there. If either of them are there, i think we have to take them and go OL with our 2nd 3rd.

3)You wisely address OLB and QB with later round picks. We don't need immediate starters there, but rather players to be backups and develop over the next few years.

The only think I disagree with you about is your choice to select two CBs - later round CBs rarely develop into anything. We need a CB who is ready to play backup nickle when the season starts - we're not going to find that in a late round pick. using two late rounders on CBs to me is just pissing them away. Im beginning to think we are best served to draft a safety and another OL or DL and ignore CB entirely in the draft.

Since we need someone who can come in right away (and play until carlos recovers) we really need to pick up a post june1st cut CB, maybe even two of them. Rogers will be healthy by the end of the season and I would say that next year we need to replace springs - either with a #1 draft pick or with a stud free agent (guy from oakland should be available)

Janso has been taken to the woodshed quite enough on this blog. When he dosen't produce the feedback seems to me to come pretty quickly from the readers. I think that is fair criticism.

As far as the Times is concerned, I do check it from time to time but its Redskins coverage really dosent compare to the Post. In general, the Times finds its greatest circulation at the local animal shelter where it makes for excellent cage liner.

Let's acknowledge a basic fact: a blog post is not the same thing as an article, though any journalist who has a blog is going to be held to a higher standard. Janso has to make clear when he is just bumping his gums and when he is putting forth vetted facts, since reading between the lines has proved a challenge for some.

As far a what to call Vinny and Synder, as I have said in the past, the Sopranos offers us all of the guidance we need: Vinny=Christopher and Synder=Tony.
Remember one of the final episodes when Tony finally realizes how much of liability Christopher has become, and he "helps" him breath after the SUV accident they have. The same thing might happen to Vinny if all the FO moves don't work out.

This is for DCTween from 12.30pm today

As published in: "Is Homophobia Associated With Homosexual Arousal?" Journal of Abnormal Psychology
1996, Vol. 105, No. 3, 440-45

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but do you have something you'd like to share with us Tween?

tsh/SETH, I sense that lots of people are still posting, just taking their real identities underground until re-registration. I definitely think Nate got fed up ... last time this happened, he took off a few weeks do to the thing we all wish we had the time to do ... work.

Posted by: dcsween | April 9, 2008 1:30 PM

Posted by: talkshowhost | April 9, 2008 1:07 PM

I hear ya TSH. I just figure backup CBs can fill in on special teams more ably than most while they're brought along to play nickel/dime defenses and what have you. Other needs like TE and P or more OL/DL depth would be fine also.

ignore the knuckleheads

is talkshowhost one of the Waldorf and Statler guys?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 9, 2008 1:35 PM

Agree completely swb, but....

If that's why people come here, isn't it better to accept that this is how THIS blog works and stop berating it for not being the same as the Times one? That is the bit that makes no sense to me.

How about "RI: come for the jibba-jabba, stay for the occasional, apochryphal Redskins news"?

Posted by: unregistered | April 9, 2008 12:02 PM

I think part of the problem is the standard that Jasno set for this blog during the season - when there's actuall info to post.

People come to expect the same level of "insider info" throughout the year, even if there isn't much info to be inside of.

When people see Jasno posting speculation peices, while other outlets are posting actual news (however small it may be), it turns into a "why isn't he posting 'inside' info on Redskins 'Insider'?"

The funny thing is, I'm sure once camp begins and preseason begins, this blog will be right back to posting good info on a constant basis, and all of this will be forgotten.

The part that doesn't make sense to me is why some just don't understand why there are individuals who get upset when no Insider info is posted on Redskins Insider.

How about "RI: come for the jibba-jabba, stay for the off season negative speculations". Then, during football season, it could just switch back to the good old slogan.

Posted by: swb | April 9, 2008 1:36 PM

mntnskinsfan, you beat me to it... later round guys and UFAs usually have to be ready to go to war on special teams, and be depthy behind the starters, and have pretty good speed and pretty good hands, hence DBs are so often in the mix.

we simply don't need any more "depth" at the CB position. We need a veteran who can start 8-10 games.

Good on you, lad. I always say that an hour or two of soul searching every year or two is never wasted time. More than that, of course, is narcissism. After all, if you can't find your soul in an hour or two, then what's the point? Now get back to the blogging.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 9, 2008 1:44 PM

I preferred ITA - cause they're way more than knuckleheads.

mtn - I'm with you, no way we can have enough CBs. Seems we're always thin and like you said, they can play teams until they are needed in their natural positions.

Posted by: mile high | April 9, 2008 1:48 PM

talkshowhost, completely agree that we need a #2-3 corner at the ready in case Carlos Rogers isn't ready by September. Without Carlos, after Springs (#1) and Smoot (#2-3) the trust level takes a nosedive.

We also need a #1 corner of the future to replace Springs, who may or may not = Carlos.

Also, it seems a low round draft pick or UFA might be able to displace one of the dudes you listed for depth/special teams and be a few dollars cheaper.

Man, that is terrible, but I've heard worse.

Posted by: RedDMV | April 9, 2008 1:56 PM

swb - the difference as dcsween said earlier is degree. Being disappointed at a perceived lack of 'inside' information is okay, voicing that disappointment is okay too.

However, continually whining about "agendas, bias, and axes (and the grinding thereof)" is just plain tedious to read or hear.

We should all remember that people who see Jasno's speculation as negative are just voicing THEIR opinion. There are no objective facts here that prove them right and him wrong, or even the reverse.

It's ALL subjective, so come go along for the ride and see where it takes us.

One final thing; NEVER forget that now that the Skins have a professional PR person, 99% of the news you hear about them is managed by that PR team.

The 'speculation' as it's called on here and printed on a few other sites may not always be right, but it may well be the only things you ever get to hear that are 'off message'.

If you don't want 'off message' (unless it fits your worldview) just get your Skins news from redskins.com and the rest of your news from Fox.

Anonymity ... which is also a big part of the explanation of road rage (the acting on it, not having the rage). Without registration, its like a blackout ... after the looting and rioting, then the graffiti.

That and the "open season on RI" post over at ES.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 9, 2008 2:27 PM

I don't think anonymity explains the chaos. We had anonymity before we had registration. There was some bad stuff going down, but I remember it as being episodic. It got extremely ugly after a Redskins loss. It would sort of come and go, and maybe this mess will too. We ITA'ed and it sort of disappeared, until it came back again.

I think it's worse this time because there's a nut job or two out there. They're familiar with the blog and probably posted in the past. They may have stopped, but they have grudges. They have probably been lurking, because they appeared pretty quickly after registration was dropped. Maybe they just get a kick out of p*ssing in the soup. One of them is intelligent and subtle. Others just seem to be high school kids or burger flippers on a lark (like me). I have my own list of possibilities in my head, but it doesn't really matter, unless someone at the Post will take the time to identify the posters and post their identities. That would be way cool.

I always thought that this stuff fell under the category of ITA. They are sociopaths and their reward is in seeing that they can make other people unhappy. If you don't wince when they give you the Indian rope burn then they stop. If you grimace, they'll be back tomorrow to do it again.

Now, to be sure, if registration were restored, this stuff would calm down a lot and we would have a higher jibba-jabba content. But, we can just sort of jibba-jabba around the miscreants, can't we? After all, we got through Jack, LiberalMike, and Barno.

I don't think we have to worry about taking Kelly with #21 anymore...

OU wide receiver Kelly times slow at Pro Day

Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly ran forty times of 4.75 and 4.68 at his Pro Day on Wednesday.

This may very well knock the underclassman out of first-round consideration, although his knees may not be 100%. By comparison, Dwayne Jarrett ran 4.67 and 4.62 at his Pro Day a year ago and went No. 45 overall. Kelly's vertical leap (32") also was unimpressive. He did reportedly look "very good" in position drills. Teammate Reggie Smith ran 4.65 and 4.61. Non-zone teams may only look at Smith as a safety now. Apr. 9 - 2:00 pm et

I'm thinking they'll draft the best available player, based on the hierarchy of need.

DT
OL
WR
DE
CB

I think the story on drafting OL with 21, is like someone filming the Cowboys Draft Board on Corners. It wouldn't have happened if they hadn't wanted to happen.

I thought Kirwan was one of the few writers (other than The Rooster) who actually came from the ranks of a team front office (Chargers?) ... so it did not surprise me that he would say something (which I presume would draw immediate flame from Greg(b) and tafka) like this about Campbell based on the player's entire body of work in college (as opposed to his performance at the Combine), "He also has a reputation as a hard worker and his eight forced fumbles prove the effort is a part of his package."

sween,

Maybe I didn't explain myself well. I'm talking about the earlier times, before we had registration. I'm talking about when people were writing "Where's my vibrator" and signing it Lisa. Everyone could have done it, but very few did, and they did it very seldom.

Thanks for the update on Sweed.

THAT SUCKS for the Redskins for 2 reasons:

1. He's DEFINETLY not going in the first round now, whereas had he run a 4.4, he'd have gotten picked before 21. A good player falling to 21 became even less of a probability.

2. Jordy Nelson's stock is on the rise. With Sweed running slow, Manningham being slow, and having character issues, Desean Jackson being tiny, and Devin Thomas having only ONE year of productivity, Nelson looks like the most sure thing of the whole group.

Crap, Crap, Crap. I'm really joining the peace corp now...

Kirwan's bio line from the nfl.com site:

"Pat Kirwan began his career in 1972. After coaching high school and college football, he spent eight years with the New York Jets, beginning as a defensive assistant coach and advancing to director of player administration."

I don't think Campbell is going to be as bad some some think, but I also don't think he's going to be great. With that said, I don't think he'd be the right pick for the Skins at 21.

Mr. Sween - if the Redskins somehow end up with Limas Sweed, and he ends up being awesome, would you ever entertain the thought of changing your blog handle to dcsweed? Or, is that just too sweedish sounding for you?

And DMAN, BOOFER, and the original Fake Nate, he had me going all day that 1st time.......

I think Kirwan was with the Jets. I've always enjoyed what he writes, but that's just me. He actually was an insider and he shares that perspective.

Nice try, but better go back to being Fake Nate. Like I said, people know who I am. You? Not so much.

Yes, I have previously posted that people know who I am - it is common knowledge.

Just restating this fact does not make people believe that you are me.

Sorry to see that nothing has changed.
