In The Tank
In a blog recently concerning the Redskins' spending, I made reference to owner Daniel Snyder's other businesses being "in the tank."
David Donovan, the Redskins' General Counsel, took issue with this and sent a letter to washingtonpost.com and The Washington Post complaining that the statement unfairly and inaccurately characterized Snyder's business acumen.
The businesses I had in mind were those with prominent local ties - his Red Zebra radio stations, and Six Flags theme parks. I was not referring to any of Mr. Snyder's other businesses. My opinion was based on the fact that Red Zebra's Arbitron ratings have been poor and fans have complained about its weak signals, particularly during broadcasts of Redskins games. As for Six Flags, its stock price fell from around $12 a share to less than $2 a share after Snyder led a hostile takeover of the company in 2005, installing a new CEO and winning shareholder approval to oust the existing directors.
Mr. Donovan counters that "Red Zebra has continued to expand in an industry in which other companies are shedding stations and expects to achieve double-digit growth during 2008 and 2009." He also says that Mr. Snyder neither owns nor manages Six Flags - he is "a stockholder and non-managing Chairman of the Board" so it is therefore not his business.

You're kidding me. We know this already. What happened to this blog? Did all your inside sources really go away when Gibbs left, because this is ridiculous. I know Dan Snyder is a world class A-hole. I've accepted it and moved on. Why can't you? You have missed so many stories this offseason it's unbelievable. And it would be fine if you were still going through all your stuff at home but the fact that you post this stuff shows you have time on your hands to look into what the team is trying to do this offseason, and instead you waste our time with this crap. I can't believe I'm going to say this but ExtremeSkins has become a better source, and thats just sad.

not quite sure what this has to do with the Redskins in general? Surely, 2 weeks before the draft, a team with a good number of needs, and a new coach, installing a good system, surely, there is something more football related to write about than the tired old, pot shot at the owner......

That is a pretty weak start to defending the statement that his business's are in the tank. I would think a better place to start regarding RZ would have been growth, revenue, things of that nature? But then I don't have an axe to grind, so what do I know.
Posted by: Greg | April 14, 2008 3:30 PM
Are you sure you don't have an axe to grind Greg?
You've already posted twice on this thread basically stating the same thing both times, i.e. Jasno is using this blog to advance a personal grudge/bias against the Redskins and their ownership.
Sounds like plenty of grinding to me.

You trying to say a 2 year old sports radio station which has shown 9 million in growth (compared to 1 million) over one year is "in the tank?" And beaten the mighty Clear Channel sports station? You tell me how that's a reasonable assumption, and I'll tell you about cost base and audience share.
Posted by: Ryan | April 14, 2008 3:36 PM
Why are the Redskins so concerned about what a blogger has to say about the owner? Whether it's a mistake or not, I think it's a waste of time for them to address it the way they did. Focus on the draft, please.

I might be. I might not be. What I am saying is that the numbers you used prove nothing either way. What did it cost to get that growth? What impact are they actually having in their local market in terms of audience share? If they're winning who are they taking it from? If they're losing who to?

And regardless "he started it" is hardly taking the high road if you think he is dissing your team!
Posted by: unregistered | April 14, 2008 3:43 PM
Ryan is correct. Red Zebra went from $1M to $10M.
But, the majority of this revenue probably came from Redskins' Games advertising.
Consider this,
The Redskins use to charge $10M for the rights to broadcast Redskins games on WJFK.
Also, DCRTV has been reporting rumors that Snyder is looking to upgrade by purchasing stations with stronger signals because XXX may go in 'the tank' if it dosen't happen.
Snyder is also trying to purchase WTEM (980)if/when Clear Channel starts to sale off their stations.

In response to the forced mea culpa theory... I would think it has to be. The editors had to have done some arm twisting to get this one out of Jasno.
It's one of those issues where the truth behind Jasno's generalization about Snyder's businesses is open to some level of interpretation at least legally and I'm sure the Post's lawyers advised the editors that a clarification would be in order.
Now, if I'm Jasno, there's no way in haaayyyuulll I'd print this anywhere without being told to. It was an off-hand comment on a blog that is at fairly well sourced.
I don't usually defend jasno's journalistic integrity, but this stinks.

Actually this isn't the truth at all. What we want is something RELATED to the Redskins in general. Its 2 weeks before the draft, they have a new coach, they have players coming in to visit, they have a bunch of players coming off injury, it shouldn't be that hard to get something to write about.

"As for Six Flags, its stock price fell from around $12 a share to less than $2 a share after Snyder led a hostile takeover of the company in 2005, installing a new CEO and winning shareholder approval to oust the existing directors."
Look, Six Flags is not doing well, but this is another Jasno smear. Before Snyder gained control, the stock was in the $4-$6 range. After he gained control it went to $12. And, yes, today you can buy a share for under $2. But if Snyder gets the blame for the fall, why doesn't he get the credit for the rise?
The second largest shareholder in Six Flags is Bill Gates, the second richest man in the world, and he hasn't sold -- he has some confidence in Snyder.
Six Flags was in big trouble long before Snyder came near it. The stock had taken a long, slow slide from around $30 to the $4-$6 range where Snyder became interested. Much of the value in Six Flags is in its real estate holdings rather than in its operations. That's why it went to $12, and that's why it's tanked to under $2. When real estate rebounds, so will Six Flags.
Jasno really ought to stop blogging about business. My impression is that he doesn't understand it. Barrons magazine did an analysis of Six Flags a few weeks back (recommending against buying the stock), and Jasno ought to just link to that. And when Barrons wants to know about Caps hockey, they can link to Jasno's blog.
The best test of Snyder's business skills was his communications firm, where he became a self-made billionaire. Why not look into that one, Jasno.
And as for the letter from Snyder's mouthpiece, that really stinks. I hope Snyder fires him. That's as likely as Jasno writing something in the blog about the draft.

Jasno, love the job you do but we don't care about Snyder's "other businesses". The fact of the matter is that their free spending ways have caught up to them and the day free agency started they had virtually no money to spend. That's the reason they were and are still not active. Do you really think that if they had $15 million in cap space that they would have just sat by and done nothing. Of course not! Asante Samuel and Alan Fanaca would be in burgundy and gold as we speak, no matter how good or bad Danny's "other business" are doing. Those business ventures have NOTHING to do with the Redskins and you know it. And for the poster above who said we want JLC to dissect 7th round draft picks, damn right we do. That's what this blog is supposed to be here for. To provide information about what the hell the organization, coaches and players are doing!

Did you call JLC's mommy to tell on him?
Posted by: Alex35332 | April 14, 2008 4:01 PM
Looking at just revenue numbers is misleading, you need to also review expenses. An old financial ploy some companies use - sign deals that inflate revenues, but your expenses increase at the same rate. Many people can't even get a signal from Red Zebra's stations.
Six Flags is currently at $1.54 a share and sliding. Funny that David Donovan would claim Snyder's role with Six Flags as "a stockholder and non-managing Chairman of the Board." Snyder led the proxy fight to oust Kieran Burke, hand selected Mark Shapiro as the CEO, and Snyder was the one to axe Mr. Six, deeming the ad campaign "pointless." Multiple news stories have Snyder and Shapiro bouncing ideas off each other to improve Six Flags. Simple shareholders don't usually decide the company's ad campaigns. Six Flags is in a terrible mess with so much negative press.
Snyder is one of the executive producers for Tom Cruise's $100 million "Valkyrie." Watch the trailer, it has the makings of a box office disaster. Cruise seems so out of place, with a California accent.

In a blog entry recently concerning the Redskins' blog "In the Tank", I made reference to David Donovan's lack of work during the redskins quiet off season.
David Donovan, the Redskins' General Counsel, took issue with this and sent a letter to me complaining that the statement unfairly and inaccurately characterized his workload.
The work I had in mind were those contracts with new FA's mainly big name guys, with prominent starter potential. Your Asante's and Moss's. I was not referring to any of Mr. Donovans other contracts that he looked over. My opinion was based on the fact that Redskins have been poor in terms of salary cap and fans have complained about its weak off season, particularly during broadcasts of The Sports Junkies. As for resignings, the vet minimum contracts after Snyder led a hostile takeover of big name players in 2005, installing a new HC and winning approval to oust the existing DC/OC.
Mr. Donovan counters that he has continued to expand in an industry in which other companies are shedding contracts and expects to achieve double-digit contract growth during the draft." He also says that Mr. Snyder neither reads nor writes contracts - he is "a paranoid owner and non-managing Chairman, and a rabid Communist" so it is therefore not his business.

The weird thing about the lawyer's letter is that Daniel Snyder is not the owner of the Redskins, either. He is the principal owner. But in getting the Redskins lawyer to write this letter, he is stealing from the minority owners -- using a company employee for personal business.
Now I'm not one of the minority owners, and I assume most of them don't read this blog, but the lawyer himself is a lawyer and he should know better than to get himself into this sort of conflict of interest. The letter should have been from Snyder's private lawyer, not the Redskins lawyer. Slimey.

Yeah, especially considering that in the past few years of the draft we have added Reed Doughty, HB Blades, Kedric Gholston, Anthony Monthgomery, Rock Cartwright, Stephon Heyer, and Lorenzo Alexander either in the late rounds or as undrafted free agents. So yeah who cares about the "8th round."

I ended up following Cartwright since he was one of the players involved in the first draft I watched from start to finish. The fact is those guys ended up contributing to team, and some of those guys have become starters (Doughty and Montgomery) or starters waiting in the wings (Blades). And if history is any indication then chances are the Redskins will find two or three guys either as UDFA or late round picks who will become household names around the beltway. Thats why I care about news concerning possible late round picks.

"Is'nt he and Tom Cruise doing something too.
They used to co-own United Artists I think."
Snyder is an executive producer for Tom Cruise's "Valkyrie." Snyder lent Cruise and Co. some money to produce a few movies, so far it has been a business disaster. Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner co-own UA with backing from MGM.

The problem is JLCs opinions -- posted as a moderator to the Redskins Insider blog -- are being represented as fact by other media organizations. They have been repeatedly negative and often unsubstantiated by fact. This is a question of journalistic integrity that in turn affects the reputation of the Washington Post and the Washington Redskins. Not to mention occasionally borders as slanderous to Dan Snyder + the Skins players and coaches.
We all know they are merely opinions. However some of them may in fact violate the terms and conditions for posting to the blog. Namely inappropriate comments and personal attacks against the owner and his businesses.
Personally, I'd prefer to read and comment on positive articles about the Redskins. Constructive criticism and factual reporting is fine too, but this constant negativity is getting old.

So now reporting on your own reports and the impact they had is considered newsworthy ... this blog is sinking faster than Maurice Clarrett's draft value ...
You didn't happen to come across something related to the draft, free agency, or a trade did you? Nothing? really? nothing?

I think it is clear that "in the tank" was absolutely a personal dig at Snyder, because there's no way Jason really believes that Snyder's other businesses have any affect on how he's running the Skins. If he wants to carry that tone on this blog, that's fine and his prerogative, but those of you who defend the author shouldn't pretend that this was anything but an intentional personal attack. I've always been under the impression that both ways these guys don't like each other. I'm sure at some point in the upcoming season, Snyder will dis "some reporter at the Washington Post" again.
Posted by: amcginl00 | April 14, 2008 5:23 PM
Wow, all these defenders of Danny Boy are incredible. I don't care what JLC says about Snyder. I don't care if JLC has an ax to grind (and he sure should considering Snyder holes himself up from the media). The fact remains that this team has done next to nothing with Snyder at the helm, so I say he's due all the criticism that comes his way. I appreciate that Snyder is willing to spend. I don't appreciate that Snyder has zero football intelligence, and so he surrounds himself with a bunch of lackeys who, also, have zero knowledge about football. So Snyder's feelings are hurt. Cry me a river. He should have thicker skin than this if he's such a shrewd businessman. And yes, Six Flags and Johnny Rockets are all doing poorly. Nothing unfair about that comment.
And RV, I seriously question whether you know if Jason is missing all kinds of stories. Do you cover the team? Give the guy a break. We don't need Redskins news every day of the week.

One thing to clear up - The Redskins are the 2nd (Thanks BOOFER) highest revenue earning team. He is only principle owner of the Redskins, so he can't transfer money from Redskins to Red Zebra to Six Flags. You can only do that IF you are the sole 100% owner of all companies involved. That's because the ownership structure percentages would change.
To much doom and gloom. Just like the thing about Cap Hell. There is no such thing for the Redskins!

That's all relative. Every team has dead cap space. I think the Giants had over $10 Mil in their SB season. We can't discuss until someone posts what every team's Dead Cap space was for the year. What JLaC posted last week was weak and not efficient enough to draw a conclusion on dead cap space and upfront monies....

Well, if you read the Post there's not. But if a reporter goes out there and finds out who's coming in for interviews, talks to the players about how they see the needs, interviews some of the new hires, then there could be news everyday. That's what reporters do. They get stories.

This is 2 weeks before the draft and we went a couple days without a post and this is what we get? Its a sad day for redskins fan when the blog is being run like this. We all have are own opinons about Danny Boy and I dont need to hear how Jayson thinks this is bad or Synder did this wrong. Lets get a REAL redskins fan running this blog or at least someone who can keep up with day to day activities in a timely fashion.

"And RV, I seriously question whether you know if Jason is missing all kinds of stories. Do you cover the team? Give the guy a break. We don't need Redskins news every day of the week."
Thats fair, and I agree we don't need news everyday of the week, especially since there isn't news that becomes available nearly that often.
However, with that said, there have been at least 18 pre-draft visits by prospects expected to go within the first 3 rounds in the draft. Theres also been other stories like:
The recent fall of Vinny Cerato's favorite Reciever prospect Malcolm Kelly, who the Redskins are meeting with this week according to KFFL.
How about the fact that Joe Bugel showed up to Virginia's pro day to get a look at Branden Albert (which I saw in plain few on NFL Network with Vinny Cerato) or the fact that Bugel is interested in the potential of Virginia Tech Tackle Duane Brown.
Why are the Redskins bringing in so many Running Backs for pre-draft visits (3 so far)? Especially Tulanes Matt Forte and Texas Jamaal Charles? Could this be a sign that the team is trying to move Betts?
Who stood out at the Redskins Local Pro Day a few weeks ago? Would the team consider taking local favorite Owen Schmitt with one of their 3rd round picks.
Trevor Laws apparently had a productive pre-draft visit, and the Redskins are looking for interior line help? Why no mention of Laws?
The Redskins want to trade down, what are their options? Apparently the Falcons, Ravens, or Panthers might want to move back up into the first round to insure that the Dolphins or Packers don't grab Brian Brohm.
Vinny Cerato is apparently friends with Mack Brown and in turn is reportedly interested in possibly selecting Tony Hills with their comp pick.
On top of that JLC is suppose to be an Insider, so he should have access to even more stories. Personally I don't like bias reporting either way. I remember in college I use to watch college coaching shows on FSN since they doubled for me as unintentional comedy where the coaches of teams below .500 would only say nothing more then "yeah he's a good player" or "yeah they did good" or my personal favorite "we're gonna be gud." Why the hell would anyone have a coaches show, its not like the coach can say anything of value, since doing so would be a PR disaster.
On the other hand JLC's constant negativity towards a franchise that made the playoffs last year with a young team is starting to feel like nails on a chalkboard for me. Especially since he isn't reporting relevant info to drown out the constant bashing that we see on this blog. If anything all I ask is that if we're going to get a bunch of stories like this (I believe around 4 or 5 since March 30th) then at least balance it out with some info that relates to the on the field product that the Redskins will field in 2008.

"Packers McCarthy: sleeping in office is counterproductive
Whatever NFL coaches wear on the sidelines, they share a legacy of wearing out the same thing: Themselves. They wear themselves out with endless schedules and sleepless nights and then wear their weariness as badges of honor. "I've worn that badge," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "I've slept at the office, I've done all those things. I think it's counterproductive. I don't think it works." -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Ok, that one I'll have to retract since JLC has covered both of those guys.
But the fact that we've been bringing in so many corners for pre-draft visits should warrent the mentioning of the fact that the Redskins have met with Brandon Flowers, Charles Godfrey, and Tracy Porter not to mention Leodis McKelvin. Instead all we get is that CB is a position of interest for the Redskins.

First off, CL, as usual you don't have a clue whether they're gamesmanship or draftsmanship. Why would they spend so much time and money on "gamesmanship?" Every one of these clubs is trying to make a profit.
But assume that, for once, you're right. Why shouldn't the fans know about the gamesmanship? This is something that only a few elite insiders should know? And when someone sets up a blog which he calls "insider" then shouldn't he be reporting his inside knowledge, for people unlike you who have an interest in reading it.
You've been spending too much time on the Caps blog. It's affected your usually clear thinking.
Posted by: Anonymous | April 14, 2008 6:55 PM

RV, that was a considerate and thoughtful response, and I appreciate that. Thank you.
Posts about Snyder are Redskins related, but the fact of the matter is simply that there isn't daily Redskins news. And if Jason wants to fill this blog with some non-related or fringe-related Redskins stuff, I say that's OK. We all have to get over ourselves a little bit and understand that Redskins news should be abundant during the season and leading up to the season. But this is a down time, and we should all relax and enjoy the off time until training camp starts.

Posted by: 4th | April 14, 2008 6:23 PM
No. It probably applies to 3/4 of the coaches in the league. There's always one more thing to be done.
Posted by: talent evaluator | April 14, 2008 6:31 PM
You're right. I should have said that 1.0 and 2.0 was included in his slight. Either way -
Hay McCarthy - How many SBs have you won? Now you don't even have a legit franchise QB....

Little Danny is such a clown. Dispatching his lawyers over a blog comment? What a crybaby. But the Washington Post is even worse to print this retraction. What are you afraid of? That Danny won't let you cover the team? Trust me, with Vinny picking the players and Zorn coaching them, Danny will be begging you to come cover the team. They'll be lucky to win 5 games next year.
Posted by: Bug Eyes | April 14, 2008 7:57 PM
Regarding Red Zone's revenue increase: yes, they grew from $1M to $10M. However, all of that increase came from money the Redskins paid them. Danny took money out of his left pocket and put it in his right pocket. If you think that takes great business acumen, you're a bigger tool than Snyder.
Posted by: Bug Eyes | April 14, 2008 7:59 PM
Do you notice how quickly Danny sends his lawyers after a blog comment, but Danny's never said anything at all about the poor little girl who got her legs cut off on a ride at Six Flags because the management decided not to perform the maintenance on the ride?
He's a lousy human being. But he's an even worse NFL owner.

BTSC Mock Draft - Pick #21 by Washington Redskins: Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida
By Blitzburgh
Posted on Mon Apr 14, 2008 at 02:45:58 PM EDT
New contributor frankrmineo impresses with his first lengthy contribution on BTSC with the Washington Reskins' selection at #21. I like the pick, and I certainly like the evaluation of the Redskins' needs. Well done, sir. Next up? Terry, represting the Dallas Cowboys
Redskins' Roster Breakdown:
Quarterback: The Redskins seem to have confidence in Jason Cambell although many league insiders are not sure that he will ever develop into a great NFL quarterback, and many believe that Jim Zorn's new West Coast offense is a poor fit for his style of play (long vertical passes as opposed to shorter, timing throws). The Redskins re-signed veteran Todd Collins to be Campbell's primary backup, so it is highly unlikely that the Redskins will devote a first round pick to QB.
Running Back: Running Back is another area that the Redskins should be set at, and I would be surprised to see them use a high pick here. With Clinton Portis, and Ladell Betts both inked to long term deals, and with the re-signing of Rock Cartwright, the Redskins have a solid core group of running backs.
Secondary: With the tragic death of Pro-Bowler Shawn Taylor, safety is a major need for the Redskins. The Redskins may wait until later in the draft to look for a safety to replace Taylor. Defensive Back is also a need as Shawn Springs is upset over his contract situation and the fact that he will be 33 years old means the Redskins need to provide some depth at the position sooner rather than later.
Offensive Line: The interior of the Redskins Offensive line seems shored up with veterans Casey Rabach, Pete Kendall, and Randy Thomas all expected to be starters next season. The only concern with the interior line was injuries that sidelined Thomas for almost the entire season. The Redskins have good depth at these positions and a high round draft pick seems unlikely. The tackle positions have been solid in the past for the Redskins with Jon Jansen and Chris Samuels both contributing consistently for many years for the team. The only issue there was a season ending injury in week one to Jon Jansen, and although he should be ready for the start of the season, the Redskins do need to start thinking about eventual replacements for Jansen and Samuels as they are both over 30. Unless a stud falls into the Redskins lap, a first round draft pick on the offensive line would be a surprise to me.
Defensive Line: The Redskins could improve on the defensive line. At defensive end they have a rising star in Andre Carter who proved to be a force in 2007. They also have a solid veteran, Phillip Daniels who has 12 years of experience including four years spent with new Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache in Chicago. A replacement for Daniels could certainly be in the cards as his age (34) is a concern. Defensive Tackle is probably the Redskins biggest area for improvement in the draft. Currently they have Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Golston, Cornelius Griffin, and Lorenzo Alexander but they do not have a shut down run stopper and the early part of the draft could be the place where the Redskins choose to address this need.
Tight End/Fullback: Tight end is another area that a first day pick is not warranted. Chris Cooley has been signed to a multi-year contract and should be considered one of the top tight ends in the league, although he is frequently left out of such discussions. At back-up the Redskins have Todd Yoder a skilled 8 year veteran that is familiar with the West Coast offense. The Fullback Position should have an increased roll this season due to the new system. Mike Sellers is a Pro-Bowl fullback and should figure prominently into the new system, but the backup roll is incredibly thin. I would expect the team to spend a second day pick trying to find some insurance for Sellers.
Kicker/Punter: The Redskins liked what they saw out of newcomer Shaun Suisham and resigned his services for another year. Derrick Frost did well for the team at punter and it would be more than surprising if the Redskins used a first day draft pick on either of these positions. (But hey I wouldn't put anything past Dan Synder).
Linebackers: The Redskins got a great deal last off-season when they signed 10 year veteran London Fletcher from the Bills. Fletcher led the team with 156 tackles and also added three interceptions and a forced fumble. Rocky McIntosh emerged as a star last season in his second year and if he can return from his late season injury I think all expect great things from him.
Wide Receiver: Outside of a Defensive Tackle, Wide Receiver might be another area that the Redskins could focus on in the early parts of the draft. The Redskins have Santana Moss who had a breakout year in 2005 but hasn't been very good since. The also have former Steeler Antwaan Randel-El on the roster who has filled in as a decent number two receiver. The team really needs a big receiver who can catch passes in the middle of the field in order to utilize the new offense. I wouldn't be surprised if the Redskins used their 1st pick on a receiver.
Pick:
The top two players left on the board of a few rankings I looked at would have the Redskins targeting either Mike Jenkins, the cornerback from South Florida, or possibly Quinten Groves the defensive end from Auburn. Mike Jenkins had some off the field issues that have moved him from one of the top CB's in the draft to somewhat of a gamble in the Roger Godell era of the NFL, but given the Redskins past they may be likely to take a gamble on Jenkins. Groves may have the talent, but his shaky season last year and the new information about a heart surgery could push him out of the first round..
Overall the Redskins need help in their secondary, Shawn Springs is getting older and they need talent and youth at the position. Jenkins would be a steal at number 21 as some mock draft have him as high as number 10 overall.
So, with the 21st pick, the Redskins take Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida.

Redskins Are Switching Sides
As Draft Weekend Approaches, Focus Turns to Offensive Needs
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/14/AR2008041402483.html
Now that was a good article. Good quotes from Vinny and the commitment to towards drafting the best player available were all what I've come to expect from JLC over the years. Of course it could also be a dog and pony show for the fans with the "best player available" talk, but at this point all we can do is take their word for it and wait for draft day to come. And if anything they choose to take a BPA approach last year by taking Landry over Amobi and Carriker.

Just another onslaught of haters from Extreme Skins or whatever.
I wish any one of these critics could explain WHY their collective panties are in such a wad, so we could have a productive conversation (as if).
So the Redskins beat writer has a beef with the front office, an axe to grind, and grind it he does, on his blog. He is critical of the team. And the quantity of inside information on the team he provides, and the frequency he provides it, are regarded as insufficient, to the point of dereliction of duty. Because this blog is SUPPOSED to be [fill in blank with whatever YOUR OPINION is of the purpose of this blog].
I'll grant you all that. So what, I ask? What does it matter if everything stated above is absolutely "true"?
Are you upset because you think the Washington Post is missing an opportunity to have better coverage of the Skins than it does, because it offers this clearly insufficient blog?
What exactly would you stand to benefit if things were different, if Jason La Canfora and the editors wrote this blog differently, or if another writer "officially" shared the blog or took it over completely? What, in your ideal state, would this blog be and do?
What the hell are you complaining about, exactly?

keep it up jason. despite that this post was simply an elaborate retraction, we still need a critical eye cast on our hometown team. a few good moves this offseason still have to pan out in order to begin to erase what has been an obvious lack of common sense in how this team has been run for the past ten years.
expect the excellence that danny's paid for. until we get it, i believe it's very much called for that jason's bloggings be critical. at the same time, i do think they have begun to border on pervasive negativity. if there was anything actually going on down at redskins park, maybe that would be different. (does anyone else get the feeling that instead of his normal spending spree, the illustrious mr. snyder has spent the entire offseason with fingers in his ears saying "la la la -- i can't hear you!"?)
on another note, for those that thought gibbs 2.0 was an underachiever, PFW has an article that paints his recent tenure in a little different light based on the draft picks the 'skins had available to them:
http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Extras/2008/recapintro.htm
Posted by: reality check | April 15, 2008 2:06 AM
reality check
Right. PFW says the 'Skins did well despite having no draft picks. Well the reason we had no draft picks was because of Gibbs. He traded them for Brunell, Campbell, Duckett, Lloyd. So what did the article prove? Gibbs did okay despite being a total screw-up?

Looks like there is no Redskins news lately. Man, I hate the offseason! Too bad I'm not in to the draft like some of the posters here. I care about the draft and all, but I just want to see them draft smart and coach em' up to be a blood drinking beast. Thats it! Me personally I think it's a waste of time to analyze draft prospects becuase you'll never know how they pan out. But I guess it helps time pass between now and September, so ramble on... ramble on... maps, such as, and like.
Posted by: Red | April 15, 2008 8:08 AM
I'm with you Red. Past assessing position needs, it makes no sense to assign picks to teams past the top 10 or so because you never know how the draft will play out. This pre-draft criticism and detailed analysis is arbitrary. Especially since after the draft, more criticism and analysis abounds. But at least then, you know who's going to your team.
Posted by: Nico | April 15, 2008 8:37 AM
"With weak-side linebacker Rocky McIntosh recovering from reconstructive knee surgery, the Redskins are expected to draft an outside linebacker. The Redskins have expressed optimism about McIntosh being ready to start the 2008 season, but McIntosh also has a potentially degenerative condition in both knees. Mayo, who also declared for the draft after his junior year, was a weak-side linebacker in his first two years at Tennessee and switched to middle linebacker before last season. Mayo (6-1, 242) led the Volunteers with 140 tackles last season."
Mayo may be the best pick at 21. He could play in Rocky's spot til he's ready to come back. He has experience in the middle for when London retires (and who's to say Blades isn't a career backup slash STs player), but might also play strong side - Marcus' days may be up sooner than later. Taking an OLman or DLman means we take the 6th or 8th best, but Mayo would be the 2nd LB off the board. He might be the one player at 21 who's a potential pro bowler.
