Position Glance - Quarterback
In the next few weeks we'll go over every position group with an eye to the draft. Figured I'd start with QB today. Everyone in the organization has said Jason Campbell is the guy for the present and the future and given the ridiculous rate of turnover at this most important position for this franchise, one would hope the kid would be given a full season at least in this new system before judgments are made.
Todd Collins proved last year that he is a pro's pro, merging the intellect and instincts no one disputed he possessed with a playing acumen previously unseen in more than a decade, given his eons between NFL starts. Re-signing Collins was the team's primary focus during the early days of free agency, and remains the only substantial contract they have doled out this off season (excluding the millions they continued to dole out to their own players in their never-ending dash to create cap space, a rite of spring around here).
So, this leaves the third QB spot wide open. Vinny Cerrato has been upfront about his hope to find a future backup QB in this draft; someone to hold the clipboard for a few years and then be able to be the No. 2. Last year Cerrato's attempt to land someone for this role via the draft completely bombed. They took Jordan Palmer in the sixth round and he was not even close to being ready for the practice squad. His training camp and mini camp were downright ugly at times, save for a perfect pass for a TD in the scrimmage against Baltimore. There's no more Mark Brunell around for insurance as the third QB, so this time the kid better be able to play. Palmer signed with the Bengals where he was reunited with his brother, and it will be interesting to see if Carson can help turn him into a viable back-up option down the road.
On the overall list of draft needs, you can't rate QB above the biggies for now - D Line, O Line, WR, DB - but with nine picks to choose from it's hard to imagine the Skins not going after a kid passer on the second day of the draft.
Randoms: A lot of Nats fans have jumped all over me for remarks I made on Comcast about the empty seats at the first game at the new ballpark and my concerns over the attendance there. Well, since then they've failed to draw to draw 25,000 to a game, with entire sections of the park appearing vacant on TV the other night. And the weather yesterday was as good as it's been in seemingly forever. Again, try to convince me how this is a great omen? From what I am told the season ticket base this season is less than it was the first year back at RFK, and they project to 2.3 million fans or so in the first year of a brand new park with a team that is supposed to be on the upswing. don't get wrong, I love baseball and most of all love the fact that there's a spanking new park 10 minutes away from my house now . I'm not hating and I wish the Nats all the best and I'll be in the stands for many an afternoon game with Chloe by my side. But I have reservations about Washington as a true baseball town. Hope I'm wrong ...
Been doing a lot of homework on the Caps/Flyers series - looks like I'll be joining in our coverage of the playoffs - and several of the GMs, scouts and players I spoke to like the Caps chances. Finding consistent even-strength scoring from that second line - specifically the Fedorov/Semin tandom - will be vital, but if Morrison and Schultz can get healthy and come close to the 38 minutes of ice time they usually eat up, the respected hockey people I know best and trust from my near 10 years covering that league are all leaning to the Caps for what that's worth ... Overall, you've gotta luv the way the NHL playoffs draw came out. The East is almost entirely old school (or at least my old school - 1982 ish - 1994 (first labor impasse), my golden era, pre dead puck era, with a lot of that wild west element still at play in terms of physicality as well). Montreal/Boston is straight outta the Adams Division, what used to be an annual bloodfeud each spring. Caps/Flyers and Devils/Rangers both are Patrick Division throwbacks and you cant beat the geographical rivalries. Pitt/Ottawa, well, at least Crosby playing in Canada will be a big story up north, where the game is truly best appreciated. Even out west, San Jose/Calgary had some great series back in the day - I remember Theo Fleury leading a huge upset for the Flames back in the day - Dallas/Anaheim have played big series and Detroit/Nashville have a budding divisional rivalry and the Wings draw guarantees sellouts in Nashville. There's no way to guarantee this kind of thing all the time given the league's divisional and playoff structure these days, but this draw is undoubtedly a cause of celebration in New York at the NHL offices.

"What happened to the QB who the skins had last summer who tore it up playing overseas in Europe."
You mean Casey Bramlet...he was cut last year and didn't make the team. The Skins couldn't find a young 3rd stringer last year to replace Brunell and i am kind of glad they didn't keep someone for the sake of it. I think the guy from Maryland made the Practice squad last year, can't remember his name and I' am an alum.

I'm big on the idea of drafting Kevin O'Connell out of San Diego State to fill our 3rd QB opening - the kid has huge upside potential, and minimal risk if taken in 5th or lower round. If Zorn is the guru of QB development that they say he is, he should be able to mentor the rookie backup at the same time he is mentoring the anointed one (JC), right?

Hollenbach is the kid from MD. He is terrible.

Didn't Bramlet then go to atlanta and not make it there either?

For a post titled "Position Glance - Quarterback" there was 1 sentence about Campbell and a small paragraph about the 2nd and 3rd stringers.
But thankfully we have in depth coverage (2 long paragraphs) about baseball and hockey.

The only later round QB I've seen repeated mock draft sites flagging as the Skins' interest is Erik Ainge. I don't know anything about him. A couple places said Josh (Jake?) Johnson too.
The biggest downside of Brunell leaving is what he did as the scout team QB ... the position usually filled by the #3 QB. B/c he was a long time vet, Brunell could mimic opposing QB styles pretty well ... which probably helped out immeasurably to prep the starting defense. My primary recollection about the Saints game this past year was about how "on fire" the D was against Brees ... thanks, in part, to Brunell.
Posted by: dcsween | April 10, 2008 10:31 AM
Thanks TSH. Who knew?
As Beck (the Mormon guy) was kept by Parcells I think he's probably in line for #2, which means that Bramlett and the other guy I've never heard of are fighting for #3.
Who said we don't have any talent in my Fins? Well apart from everyone, that is.
Ugh.

See, he is not going to be a diva, prima donna receiver in the NFL ... he's going to be hip and cool, like David Byrne, and wear over-sized pads and do that "same as it ever was" routine. It will be hilarious. Plus he's really tall, blocks well, and can catch balls, such as.

jlc,
"a true baseball town"...there are only a handfull of teams in all of the MLB that truly have the baseball town effect. NYY, BOS, CHC, PHI, and STL. The rest, dont really stack up the attendence in April. PLus, in most cities fans come to the park when there is a product worth seeing. Fact is baseball actually got its first organized start here in the district amongst politicians. The game belongs here.

Mike Sellers previously mentioned that the old wooden sleds were heavier than others. Kedric agreed and said "some of the sleds are bigger than most guys "decks" - but it sounded like he said another word instead of "decks." :)

The interesting bit from that Redskin Report blog is the one about running backs, esp. the presumed roster battle btwn Marcus Mason and Eric Shelton ... not to mention the photo of Sellers wearing a figure skater shirt.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 10, 2008 11:10 AM
Depending on where Chad Henne falls to, I believe he could be a tremendous pick up, for two reasons. The dude is an excellent quarterback with what he was given last year, and with him hopefully falling to a decent position (not too expensive), he could mature into a spectacular #2, or if JC fails or doesn't develop quickly enough, could potentially take over as #1. Although I still easily believe JC will be able to mature sufficiently to be able to play very well by the end of this season assuming our offensive line doesn't die, being prepared for injury or retarded development doesn't hurt.
Posted by: Karen | April 10, 2008 11:12 AM
My $.02.
I like Dennis Dixon, Oregon, as a late round QB pickup. He's coming off an ACL injury but he was having a helluva year before that. He's tall and athletic and sounds like he's got a decent arm.
Posted by: mtnskinsfan | April 10, 2008 11:15 AM
sween - I would not call that a figure skater shirt to the Meast himself. Damn he's large.
Posted by: mile high | April 10, 2008 11:15 AM
karen, i agree with you.
If we can trade out of the first round and get a high 2nd and 3rd round pick, then i would take henne with that 3rd rounder (or even our own 2nd) and not think twice about it.
Aside from the benefits you mention, he could also be very valueable in a trade in 2-3 years with a QB-needy team. Henne could even net us a future 1st rounder. I see Henne as a great investment. If we trade down, I definitely see us nabbing him.
Posted by: talkshowhost | April 10, 2008 11:20 AM
mtn - I read somewhere that Dixon had a great pro day despite only being a little over 3 months removed from acl reconstruction. Plus, he's got good size and speed.
Posted by: mile high | April 10, 2008 11:23 AM
I am against wasting a high pick on a QB. Use high picks for need (OL, DL, CB, WR). Hopefully guys that will be in the line-up immediately.
Posted by: unregistered | April 10, 2008 11:23 AM
mile high ... no doubt ... the only way I would address Sellers in person would be as "Mr. Sellers ... sir."
As in, "Hey, cool cutoff, non-figure skating-looking shirt, Mr. Sellers, sir."
Posted by: dcsween | April 10, 2008 11:26 AM
This town is so pitiful. The National Pastime is Baseball... not Football. All you people in this town care about is who may be the 3rd string QB, who may eventually get to no. 2, who may eventually be no. 1. Who cares!!!! Geez, the Nationals have played 3 games at home, two against the nothing Marlins, and Mr. LaCanfora is ready to move the Nationals back to Montreal. God you people are despicable. Get a life.

I don't think I or Mtn are advocating for taking Dixon or any qb for that matter high - but in round 5 maybe. If he's still there, i'd pull the trigger. One concern with him would be whether he could play from under center as effectively. He took most of his snaps at Oregon from the shotgun if I recall correctlty.

if we trade out of the first and land a 2nd and 3rd, then we will have 5 picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
that allows us to cover the positions you mentioned and still nab a QB. mid-round QBs are generally good investments because if you decide you don't need them, you can almost always recoup their value in a trade. Campbell isnt a franchise QB yet and Collins only has 2-3 more years left in him. Since QBs take time to develop in the pros, and we need a backup QB now, I see this as the ideal draft to get a good QB. Taking a QB in rounds 5-7 is like throwing your picks away. YOu have a far better chance of finding OL and DL depth in those rounds than you do a QB. We would be wise to nab a backup QB earlier and add depth along the lines later (assuming we grab atleast one OL and DL starter first)

I thoroughly agree with whoever the heck talkshowhost is. As long as we get one surefire hit on the OL and DL, and there are at least one real potential player later in the draft at those two positions that could be grabbed later, 2nd and 3rd rounds would be a great spot to nab a QB.
Posted by: Karen | April 10, 2008 11:36 AM

MH - I agree - I said I liked Dixon as a late round pick up. By that I mean 5th round or later also. I read he played mostly shotgun as well. The report also said he was good at reading defenses and making progressions to 2nd and 3rd receivers. He may not contribute right away but he sounds like he has alot of potential.
Posted by: mtnskinsfan | April 10, 2008 11:40 AM
It sound like Henne may go in the 2nd round. He is being lumped into discussions along with Flacco from Delaware and right behind Brohm who is slated to go late 1st early 2nd. I don't think we should use anything higher than a 5th rounder on a QB. Ainge, Dixon and Booty are kinda intruiging to me since they played in tougher conferences and some big games. Dixon was primarily in the gun with the spread offense, Booty may have peaked and I saw Ainge play a number of times with some questionable decision making at times but they did all show potential IMO.

Here is my question. Do we want more of a running QB at no 3 or a in the pocket guy? In terms of practice and scout team play, I think a runner is better, as Collins can simulate a good pocket QB. But in terms of play, if we are down to the no 3 guy in a game, do you want him running all over the field or playing it safe?

unregistered - the only position that I would say we no matter what need a starter for next year is CB. Granted, that's assuming a lot, but still. I doubt we need 5 guys that must be ready to start the first game. I'd say we need 3/4 - a versatile OL (or 2 so all the positions will be covered), a DL, and a CB. Besides, even if we are deficient in any area, Lorenzo Alexander can do it all.
Posted by: Karen | April 10, 2008 11:55 AM
Tough to pick an early QB in this draft when we have greater needs in other spots. I agree after 6-7th rounds its useless. Wish we had that 4th round pick right about now. If we could trade our 1st for a 1,3,4 or 2,2,4 or something maybe?

Greg,
If we can get our DT (assuming that the top DEs are gone) in the 1st, Nelson in the 2nd, and OL with the first 3rd rd pick, I would go for a OLB like Bryan Kehl with our comp 3rd rd. pick. Even more so if we could trade that 1st pick for and early 2nd and 3rd picks.
Posted by: Curzon417 | April 10, 2008 12:05 PM

Teams like the LA Dodgers, St Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, and many others have healthy attendance -- even though 33%-40% of their stadium is empty on a regular basis.
MLB expects its teams to average 25,000-30,000 fans a game, which the Nats have done with the exception of last year, where they averaged 24,217/game with a terrible team.
2006 - 26,582/game; 2005 - 33,651/game.
Baltimore averaged 27,060 last year -- but you can't really compare them and the Nats, because Camden Yards fills up many times a year to see the Yankees and Red Sox, with the majority of the stadium pulling for the visitors. Even with that awesome advantage, they only averaged 3,000 more fans than the Nats who have no Yankees or Red Sox to pull in fans on a regular basis.
The Nats will average at least 25,000 this year, and be considered healthy. When a team falls below 20,000, like the Devil Rays and Marlins do year after year, then the MLB is concerned and relocation talks begin.
The end of the school year is when attendance really increases for the Nats every year. To judge them by April numbers is not to know anything about Washington sports.

Vinny was, and has been, a major part of this organization for pretty much the entire Snyder era. To completely absolve Vinny for not being the head guy "in charge" is just as, if not more naive as completely pinning any past personnel decisions on him.
Just because Bill Belichick has final decision on personnel moves doesn't mean Scott Pioli gets no credit (good or bad) for New England's roster. Vinny Cerrato has been a major part of this organization, and as such, he gets a large chunk of credit for ALL personnel moves in the past, whether good or bad.

My Ideal Draft (while still being somewhat realistic):
Skins trade 21st overall pick to Atlanta for their highest 2nd and third rounders. ATL select Brian Brohm.
The Skins also trade Betts to someone for a 4th and 6th.
2 (ATL) DT Trevor Law
2 (WAS) WR Jordy Nelson
3 (ATL) G Roy Schuening, Oregon St.
3 (WAS) DE Chris Harrington, Texas A&M
3 (COMP) Craig Seltz, S, LSU
4 (???) LB Tavares Gooden, Miami
5 (WAS) OT Jeremy Zuttah, Rutgers
6 (WAS) FB Jerome Felton, Furman
6 (???) QB Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii
7 (WAS) DL Barry Booker, VT
7 (WAS) OT Carlton Medder, Florida
7 (WAS) DT ndre Fluellen, FSU
Notes:
1) Yes, I deliberately left off CB as I think we have to fill this need with a veteran player but after june 1st. We need a starter this year and we need to draft a CB to replace springs with our #1 pick next year. The Giants showed what you can do with a so-so defensive backfield when you have a solid defensive line. Please note I have us taking 2 defensive linemen expected to contribute this year and 2 in the later rounds to develop.
2) We didnt do anything with Betts last year and we didn't really miss him either. I think we will be fine with Portis starting and Carwright backing him up (Mathis takes rocks place in the return game) with Eric Shelton/Marcus Mason/Post June 1 cut veteran competing for #3.
3) Initially I had us taking Henne with our Comp 3rd our 4th, but Seltz and Gooden are underrated and too good to pass up. Brennans stock has fallen but he would be a good pickup in the 6th.

I've come to the conclusion that the redskins problems over the last decade plus fall squarely on the shoulders of Jason la Canfora for mentioning the problems of the Redskins over the last decade plus.
If he'd only hailed like the Pollyann's, the redskins would be defending Superbowl champeens..

I particularly liked this construction in Jasno's post: "they project to 2.3 million fans or so in the first year of a brand new park with a team that is supposed to be on the upswing."
So, if a team is "supposed to be on the upswing" it doesn't matter whether they're any good or not. This team stinks. They've never been any good and the fan experience of going to a game has been terrible. The owner refuses to spend a nickel on a decent player (Daniel Snyder turned upside down). He's charging an arm and a leg for anything sold inside the stadium (Daniel Snyder, exactly). The team's play sucks. So why would anyone want to go out to watch them?
So, Jasno "has reservations about Washington being a baseball town." Duh. It isn't a baseball town. Major league baseball has ignored Wasington for fifty years. You have to go to a nursing home ("assisted living community") to find someone who has seen a major league game in the city limits. Washington has to be changed into a baseball town. And as near as I can tell the Lerners are going about it all wrong.

SKIPPY'S SMOCK DRAFT GUIDE FOR REDSKIMS
In the previous recent past, the Redskims have given away their draft picks for overpaid players who reinvented the word "Suckage."
This year they are overthrowning that tradition, and going back to squandering their picks themselfs.

The Redskims, of who Skippy is a big fan, have nine draft picks this year to waste, so there is a lot of pressure on selecting exactly the wrong players to pick.
Fortunately, the Odor, Damn Snyder, and his Devoted Towelboy, Vinnie Cerratsosrizzo, get to make all the picks, so Skippy asks you--what could go right?

Skippy thinks the Redskims should continue their First Round tradition of drafting a receiver who can't catch anything more constipated than a cold. If he's available, Skippy suggests Lime-as$ Sweedish, the tall drink of water from the University of Dubya. He's 6 foot four, or four foot six, and has good hands but a bad wrist, injured in a tragic corsage accident.
Second round choice should either be a linebacker with a bad knee (a la Rocky Balboatosh) or a DT with a bad back like that guy with the bad back they drafted who name Skippy has mercifully forgotted.

There are two third round choices to be squattered, so Skippy recommends one be traded for a RB who can't run, Like T.J. Duckmeister, the other donated to the Red Cross. Otherwise it would just be some WR signed for an obscene amount of money he wont urn, like Brando Loins.

The lower round choices take care of themselfs. Skippy suggests a QB who'll later join his brother with the Bengals or a center with a smallish package.
Fondly,
skippy

Once again, the Nats will average at least 25,000-30,000 fans/game this year, and be considered a completely healthy franchise; the end of the school year is when attendance really increases for the Nats.
I bet the Lerners wish they had the Yankees and Red Sox fill their stadium multiple times a year with visiting team fans to boost their attendance like the O's.

Not sure I agree that the Mathis signing made no sense. Low-cost, low-expectations, not a lot of noise made about it. If they guy doesn't work out just cut him. Not lots of money invested in him.
It's not in the same ball park risk wise as signing T.O. or Moss.

The baseball season is 162 games long. Making any projections about player and team stats not to mention game attendance based on the first week is foolish. The leaves budding now will be falling before the season ends. Plus who cares the Redskins will be playing by then and we'll forget all about the Nationals.

I don't understand what the problem is. You don't have to read everything that he writes. He gives a pretty obvious disclaimer every time he goes off of the skins, and he still provides more "insider" updates than any other source I've seen. AND I'm pretty sure that any Redskins topic is willing to be discussed on this blog, so it's not like there's a bunch of random people with no skins/football interest. So once again, I don't really see what the problem is.

dlhaze, I know you were joking but, for the record, Brennan would be a perfect backup WCO quarterback:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/colt-brennan?id=196
"Brennan has that moxie on the field that reminds some of Brett Favre, but it is his quick reads that sees him get the ball out instantly to his targets. He is a mobile passer whose scrambling keeps defenses honest, but lacks the size and certainly lacks the core strength you look for in a quarterback that can absorb punishment at the next level. In a spread or West Coast offense, Brennan is a nice fit."

I do go there for NFL inside info, but I am more interested in the Skins.
This is a Skins blog, or supposed to be. The negative comments, off topic rants, non-insider info don't make it very fun.
It use to be a good blog for finding stuff out. When was the last time you heard any news from inside redskins park reported here. It's always, "hot of the presses" stuff of the "skins just announced" wow very insider.
How bout getting an interview with Mathis? Finding out who the Skins plan to draft from credible sources... all speculation, we can all do that and do.
The comments here are log because folks like the Skins not because of who is doing to posting.
Posted by: Toady | April 10, 2008 1:32 PM
I could not agree more that it is not JLC that brings people here -- it is the fact that the Skins have tons of fans.
JLC wants you to think the Skins aren't that popular and he is the reason people come here.
Get a clue JLC -- your hating won't change the fact that the Skins have one of the top 5 largest fanbases in football.

Well he promised a glance and he delivered on his promise. 'The Redskins have a starter in Campbell, a backup in Collins and are going to draft a 3rd QB.'
I can do the RB for him and save his time..
'Clinton Portis is the starter, Ladell Betts is a decent backup but fumbles too much, Rock Cartwright is 3rd on the depth chart because nobody else wants him and he fumbles too much too. Mike Sellers is the FB.'

Skins would be foolish to draft a #3 QB. Take someone else's reject. They are always out there. Guys who are never good enogh to be full time starters, but can play enough to get you through some games. Look at the kid for SF, Shaun Hill (?). He was totally unknown, playing behind Smith and Dilfer, and was their best QB ... by far.
The other thing the Skins have if they need to go to a 3rd QB, is Randle El. He was a very good college QB and would be respected by his teammates. If the Skins are in a pinch for a QB in an important game, I'd use ARE over whoever is the clipboard guy.

Hey, speak for yourself, blogger with short name who writes like another blogger with a long name. I was interested in the Elfin column yesterday where Mathis said "This isn't my last chance. It's my only chance."
I like that attitude, although I'm too lazy to look the quote up and I may actually have just made it up. Still I'd like to have heard it from, say, Brandon Lloyd.
Posted by: talent evaluator | April 10, 2008 1:43 PM
I'm in agreement that QB is one of the positions we have the fewest questions at. We're looking for someone who can be a decent #3 this year, nothing more. Why would we use a 1st day draft pick on that instead of the lines or the secondary? I think we could easilly bring in a vet minimum QB after the draft to help out until it's proven that we need a number 2 or starting qb. We could also find someone undrafted. Isn't Trent Dilfer available? He's someone who's been in the West Coast system and could be brought in to mentor Campbell on the cheap.
On another note, while I was completely against it at first, I'm liking the idea of trading Betts more and more if we're able to get something good for it. Seems like we've got plenty of young talent on the squad right now who could easilly take the #2 spot. The only concern is can any of them be a viable starter if Portis goes down?

TSH, if Brennan is there in the 6th, we need to take him. At worst, we should be able to get back some value if we trade him. I read an article the other day (will try to find the link) where he put on 25lbs. I believe it was discussed on one of the threads here.

Since we're talking about the draft...
I like Marcus Monk from Arkansas and not just because he's a namesake. He's tall, had an excellent combine and for his size has decent speed (4.5). He's got an insane vertical (36in.) He'll probably be avialable early in the 5th where I think he'd be a steal.

Draft Scout Snapshot: DS Rating on 08/12/07: #12 WR, #64/750 Overall, Projected: Rnd 2-3 (Injury)
2007: Underwent two surgeries on his right knee that would keep him on the sidelines for the first half of the season...On August 13th, Monk underwent an arthroscopy on his right knee to repair a small tear he suffered at practice on August 9th. Draft Scout Marcus Monk News
03/26/08 - "I want to let everybody know that I'm back," Monk said. "It's been a long, long year." Monk also improved his Combine numbers in the vertical and long jumps Tuesday. The Lepanto native had a 36-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-2 inch long jump at the UA's Pro Day, according to NFL. com. Monk performed well in position drills, cut well and had no stumbles or dropped passes. Jones also participated in wide receiver drills and dropped at least one pass that was thrown behind him in stride by former UA quarterback Clint Stoerner. Eighteen former Razorbacks participated in Arkansas' Pro Day and one player stuck out the most, ESPN NFL analyst Chris Mortensen observed. "Marcus Monk without question," Mortensen said. "... All of a sudden, there's a lot of buzz on him." Brandon Marcello, Northwest Arkansas Times
03/25/08 - Marcus Monk says his knee is just fine. His performance at Tuesday's pro day on the Arkansas campus seemed to back up that assessment. With approximately 50 NFL representatives on hand, Monk went through a solid workout that could help alleviate fears about the wide receiver's surgically repaired right knee. Statistics were not released at the workout, but NFL.com reported Monk with better-than expected numbers. He ran two 40-yard dash attempts in 4.43 and 4.41 seconds, plus a 36-inch vertical jump and 10-foot, 2-inch long jump. "It felt good," Monk said. "I want to show everybody I'm back." Beyond just putting up impressive numbers, Monk, 6-5, 215, looked sharp in agility drills and when running routes. Monk looked sharp when making his cuts. He had limited mobility and agility late in the season while attempting to come back from the injury he suffered in two-a-days. Monk played in nine games, but started only four. He contemplated going pro after catching 50 passes for 962 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, but elected to come back. - Chris Bahn, ArkansasSports360.com

I cannot tell you how disappointed I will be if the Redskins draft Campbell with their first pick. Watching him run at the combine, I just got the feeling that he just wasn't much of an athlete.

NFL Scouts Decided Where Kelly Ran Not OU Staff
By ccmachine Section: Football
Posted on Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 01:22:09 PM EDT
Malcolm Kelly shocked over 30 NFL scouts and the entire Sooner Nation yesterday with a 40 time that some had clocked as low as 4.75. Afterwards Kelly voiced his displeasure with the OU coaching staff and the location of the workouts.
"This is my life. You know what I'm saying? This ain't no school. This ain't no classroom. This ain't got nothing to do with that. This has to do with me; my family. This is what I do. I play football. And I'm supposed to come out here and run as fast as I can."
"I already had everything set up for where I want to do it at," Kelly said. "I get out here and it's a whole different deal."
"People want to say surface is surface, but it's a lot more to it than that," Kelly said. "You have to think about how much ground time you have running on this mushy surface here and how much ground time you have on Astroturf.
"Just a little bit of time could mean a whole lot of draft money."
The thing that Kelly is failing to understand is that it was the NFL scouts, and not OU strength/conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt, who requested that the players run on the softer surface because "this is the surface that they run on" and that scouts could add fractions of a second to a 40-yard dash time if they perceive a track to be too fast.
"I told Malcolm it's up to him, wherever he wants to run," Schmidt said.
Now Malcolm Kelly must overcome the perception that he's lost a step as a result of his injury and the he's going to be a high maintenance type player who blames all his woes on someone else. He'll have a few private workouts with the Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins before the draft to try to make up some ground.

Not surprised to see your baltimore roots come out in your comments on DC baseball.
Baseball in DC is here to stay, Baltimorans need to get over their obsession with trying to prove baseball won't work here. Two games in April against the Marlins is not how to judge how baseball will succeed.
The Reds had about 14,000 earlier in the week. Is Cincy a good baseball town?
DC hasn't had a contending team since about 1934, and it will take a few wins to get people following the team. Mediocre attendance in April doesn't mean a darn thing. DC is no better or worse a baseball town than Baltimore, Philly, Cleveland, Cincy etc.

Kurz, the more I read what Kelly did, the more of a turd this guy has made himself out to be. I'm just glad he ran so poorly so that everyone could see his true self, rather than the Redskins drafting him, and it blowing up in their faces.

Okay I can accept a judgment if it comes from our just leaders. I am trying like heck to not go completely Baseball on the blog... and finding it near impossible. So here I go.
The Nats ain't leaving any time soon. I have to give them credit they at least seem to have a long term plan, and it has a shot at working. Faze one from as far as I can see is done, they grabbed some young prospect players who can be used as trade bate. Now they need to start looking to make trades at the end of this season for proven pitchers.
They will not be contenders for a few seasons. !Shocker! given the state of the team when they brought them here.
I have only seen this team make one truly dumb move and that was letting Soreano go like they did, moronic move. Other than that name one truly bad move they made? What tradable player did the Nats really have to let go of? What big name free agent would have made the difference?

Probably old news but I saw that Justin Gatlin the former Olympic sprinter worked out as a WR at Tennessee's pro day last month. They said he's a long shot but he's certainly fast, 4.45 and 4.42 in the 40. Wonder if he can catch, return punts?.

DC, oh I moved on from Buckner back a long time ago. I didn't blame him for the Sox losing the Series back in 86. Blame the Manager for not subbing Buck out like he had done in previous games, blame Bob Stanley for throwing that wild pitch, blame Calvin Shiraldi, but you can't blame Buckner. I thought what he had to endure was beyond awful.
So yeah, I'm way beyond Billy Buck. I just wonder if he's found it in himself to forgive what he was put through.

OK ESPN are a bunch of morons. They regraded the 2005 draft and said the skins should've drafted Aaron Rodgers instead of JC. WTF. Based on what? One game the guy's played? Maybe Rodgers proves to be a better QB this year but it's just lame to call him a better QB than JC at this point.
Posted by: mtnskinsfan | April 10, 2008 5:05 PM
mtn, I think they're just saying that Rogers was higher on most peoples' draft boards at the time. Wasn't he supposed to be like a Top 10 pick? No way to know though how these things will really pan out.

I thought the point of the article was to regrade the 2005 draft based on how those players have panned out so far. Maybe Rodgers does become the better player but I don't think you should put him ahead of JC just based on potential - at least not for the purposes of that article.
Posted by: mtnskinsfan | April 10, 2008 5:18 PM
Since the Redskins drafted JC with the 25th pick, one selection AFTER Rodgers was picked, does espn explain exactly how they should have selected an already drafted player? just askin'

The only thing that bugs me about Jasno's post is that he sticks to the facts. The Redskins would like to draft a future number 2 QB.
There's no speculation about which draft prospects they might be interested in.
Posted by: Stumped | April 10, 2008 5:32 PM
I'll take Soup over A Rodgers anyday. Guy seems soft to me. Plus, he's got bad hair and that just won't cut it with the Skins.
Posted by: mile high | April 10, 2008 5:35 PM
They reshuffled the players from that draft based on how they've panned out. For instance they have Shawne Merriman going #1 overall instead of Alex Smith. JC isn't even mentioned as first round material which to be fair isn't what bothered me. I just thought it was silly to say the skins should have drafted Rodgers ahead of JC when Rodgers has barely even played yet.
Posted by: mtnskinfan | April 10, 2008 5:35 PM

Personally, I am sick to death of hearing about the Caps! I know this is bad and I do support my home team(s) but I just don't care for hockey.
While I am happy the Caps made the playoffs, Sportsnet has been talking about them AD NAUSEUM for weeks and it's just getting worse. The Wizards got very little love on Sportsnet today after beating the Celtics last night (for the 3rd time!) due to MORE talk about the Caps...and the Skins? They seem to have forgotten them (ok, I know it is the offseason and not much is going on).
The non-stop Capitals talk reminds me of last year when Cal Ripken was inducted into the Hall of Fame and we had to endure "30 Days of Cal" - it was actually called that - or something like it.
On the other hand, if Sportsnet was focusing on the Skins nonstop I would be totally cool (in fact ecstatic) with that.

What happened to the QB who the skins had last summer who tore it up playing overseas in Europe.
From the coverage last summer, it sounded like he fit the mold of a 3rd QB, but got lost in the numbers crunch when the skins kept both Collins and Brunell.
