Santana Moss Update
Jason Reid reports that Jason Campbell and the wide receivers were indeed working together today (with only Antawn Randle El missing with an excused absence) at Redskins Park and spoke with Campbell and Moss.
Here's Reid's report:
Because of a groin injury, wide receiver Santana Moss did not participate in workouts during the previous offseason. And then Moss was slowed because of groin and heel problems during the 2007 season. But Moss, who has taken more time off from training than he has in the past, appeared sharp while catching passes from starting quarterback Jason Campbell and backup Todd Collins yesterday, Campbell said, and having Moss on the practice field at this of the year is a good sign for the Redskins.
"Santana took a different approach to the offseason," Campbell said. "He is such a fast athlete, and whenever you run as many routes as he runs, you tend to put more wear and tear on your legs. This year, we told him to take more time off to get his legs back healthy. Last year, he was fighting so many problems. "Today, Santana came out and caught passes with us and he looked smooth. He looked like he was right back in the thick of things again. We just told him not to overdo it. The worst thing would be for him to overdo it right now and it affects him later on in the year. Everybody knows how important Santana is to this team."
Although encouraged about how his legs responded during yesterday's passing session, Moss doesn't want to "look too far down the road," he said. "I don't like to get ahead of myself and think about what's going on way before it's time. That's just the type of guy I am. As players we just have to wait until it's time, and then you just have to go play the games.

I can never get too much Skins news. Awesome to hear that our team (at least the wideouts) are working together this early. How long till kickoff?
Posted by: Curzon417 | April 15, 2008 7:41 PM
This is a really good thing. Cooley did work out with Jason last offseason (think Randle El did as well) and the chemistry Jason had with Cooley was evident. Then again, how could any QB NOT have chemistry with Cooley?

You guys must be so happy to not be reading Receiver, The's name in these updates. That's worth 6 wins right there. So I'm going with 7-9.
Somebody wake the Caps. Same thing as Period 2, Game 1...rapid fire carelessness.

Santana's lack of production was a huge part of the Skins issues that left them at 5-7 before the run. Santana v.2005 would have brought the Skins 11-12 wins in 2007.
But he was not good and the Skins struggled.
I'm glad he is healthy now, but let's see him in October. He is lightening when healthy, but I wonder how many games he'll be healthy for ...
Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | April 15, 2008 7:57 PM
Along with Moss, the Skins suffered through many injuries last season. This will be our biggest challenge this year. I am not convinced that players should be tagged as injury prone, although years of abuse on the field do tend to break players down. And there are some players that can never stay healthy, but I do not believe that all players should be labeled that way.
The Skins will not suffer the amount of injuries this year and their record will reflect that. My prediction (drunk on Kool-Aid of course) is 10-6.

SMACK, I sure hope so. It will truly suck to lose to the flippin' Cavs in the playoffs 3 years straight! Of course, I don't really count last season since our 2 All Stars were injured and not playing.

Thanks for posting this Reid (and Cindy?). Personally I think Santana has developed as much as he's going to, which is great, because when healty he might be a top 10 reciever. The problem is he's never on the field and when he gets on the field he has hamstring problems.
I hope that this offseason he lets his leagues rest while focusing on conditioning. Hopefully he's keeping in shape by riding the bike or elliptical for an hour a day .

Since every story in The Post seems to be by Jason Reid and Jason LaCanfora I think it's time that they both author this blog. Jason R seems to be focusd on actual sports and for those fans who actually go to a Redskin Insider blog for information like this he could serve that need. For those who like to hear about obscure bands, reality TV shows and pick the NFL GM nickname contest they could read Jason L's posts. Either way, I think Jason R should share the blog.

Last time I checked, the groin and heel muscles were nowhere near the hand muscles that dropped and fumbled at about every concievable oppurtunity last year. If he doesnt fix that little issue he'd better start worrying about his kneecaps.

Because I am a Skins fan, I can say this...
Santana was some Sh**t last year. The ball hit him in the facemask and hands in the Green Bay game, but when healthy, he's a difference maker. The thing is the Skins need another deep threat. No one can cover Moss one on one.

10 wins 6 losses....

Not to be negative BUT...we have all new offensive coaches, right? And I don't believe any of them - especially the head coach - have done the job we have hired them to do before...maybe Stump Mitchell. How can this be a positive? Guarantee any wins? Everything is an unknown.

I agree with the spirit of Lisa's comment above, that we are all taking a leap of faith in this offensive staff... aside from Buges of course... but my hope (as noted above in the "punch them in the mouth and steal their lunch money and elicit boos from their home crowd" hope for our Thursday night all-patriotism opener) is that maybe, just maybe, we will be able to surprise some people early in the season because Zornball will (I think) be so different from Gibbs/Saunders ball...

I believe dcsween or someone up here had a theory last season that something wasn't right about Santana's hand or hands... an injury nobody was talking about, which the more leggy injuries were "covering for."
I just got bac k from having some beers with my man Stumptown Chris so I don't know if maybe this was already covered, but the Santana 2007 story cannot be written without some mention of this phantom injury, right? I mean, an injured hand for a wide receiver is like an injured sense of humor for a blog reader, right?

To me having anything between .550 and .450 is about as balanced as one can hope. The thing that is a ridiculous are the Easy schedules for New England (again) and SD, a strength of schedule below .400 is just pathetic.
The NFL is going to have to start looking at re-alignments at this rate. If they can't get the imbalance in pure crap teams vs good teams in the AFC in order that is just sad. Get rid of the conferences.
THe NFL is setting up to let the Pat's to go 16-0 again.
Posted by: Alex35332 | April 16, 2008 6:40 AM
The only solution to fixing this problem. Give each conference 1 more team and make teams play a 16 game schedule against teams in their conference. No more AFC-NFC games. But 1 game against the other 16 teams in your conference.

And he's not looking forward to being among those Boston fans you mention. Though he is looking forward to the possibility of a meet-up with you, Old School, and anybody else there in Boston, should such a meet-up ever occur. Just putting it out there.

Don't forget that this rating is skewed by the 2007 result. The Patriots swept everyone, including a 6-0 sweep of a terrible AFC East division, so that distorts their rating. The Chargers share a division with the Raiders (horrible), Chiefs (awful) and Broncos (barely have a pulse).
It would be interesting to see what the rating is if you exclude all the inter-division games.

unreg, the pats play 8 games, 1/2 their schedule against teams that won fewer than 5 games last year.
The NFL should be ashamed of themselves for giving them that much of a cakewalk. Its like they're being rewarded for cheating.

Posted by: dlhaze | April 16, 2008 8:44 AM
I'm actually encouraged by the Skins' schedule for 08...
Assuming they hold true to form and go 3-3 or at worst 2-4 in the Division...
Cakewalks against Lions, Jets, Cardinals, Rams, and 49ers...
If they can manage 2-3 wins from the likes of Saints, Browns, Ravens, and Bills (all beatable teams by the way). They're in the playoffs at 9-7 or 10-6.
The major caveat to this is injurys particular at key positions where they are not very deep like CB, WR, OL, and DL.
Posted by: Nico | April 16, 2008 9:07 AM
the schedule is meaningless in terms of predicting records....NFL landscape changes to much...
I do love it from a standpoint of mapping the teams travelling and predicting the flow of the season, also guessing what the narratives will be in the 24 hour newz cycle...
Posted by: chris lArry | April 16, 2008 9:13 AM
It doesn't matter what the strength of schedule is before the year starts, its what it is at the END of the year, which somehow we ALWAYS seem to invariably have the toughest sked at the end.

Top wide receivers in 2008 NFL Draft:
1. Limas Sweed, Texas
Height: 6-4 Weight: 210
College stats: 124 receptions, 20 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.50 40-yard dash, 4.33 short shuttle, 37 ½-inch vertical
Limas stayed in college for four year and refined his route running and ability to read coverage's. There is a lot less risk with Sweed than many of the other receivers. He had 39 starts in college football as opposed to Devin Thomas with 13 college starts. As he said to me in our discussions, "I know how to get open, I can leap and the best thing I do is adjust to the ball." Sweed will not be in the dark when he lines up against NFL secondary, while some of the other candidates just might be lost. Finally, this guy has excellent character. Draft projection: Round 1.
Sweed: Combine highlights | Day in the life of | Pro day interview
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Devin Thomas, Michigan State
Height: 6-2 Weight: 217
College stats: 79 receptions, 8 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.40 40-yard dash, 4.26 short shuttle, 33-inch vertical
Right now, Thomas is the popular choice to be the first receiver selected and he may well be. However, 13 college starts, junior college prior to that and two different high schools works against his great explosiveness. I must say his 1.47 10-yard time is lightning quick and in a simple system he may excel early. Draft projection: Round 1.
Thomas: Combine highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. James Hardy, Indiana
Height: 6-5 Weight: 217
College stats: 191 receptions, 36 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.49 40-yard dash, 4.22 short shuttle, 37-inch vertical
Hardy had some off-the-field issues two years ago, and some feel he turns it down over the middle. It all may be true, but he has special physical skills and will be a red zone threat from day one. Hardy caught 36 touchdown passes in 32 college starts. He's almost 6-foot-6, with a good vertical leap and long enough arms to get to a ball almost 12 feet high. He is a former Indiana basketball player and a 5-foot-9 corner doesn't have a chance on the jump ball. Draft projection: Round 1.
Hardy: Combine highlights | Combine interview
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. DeSean Jackson, California
Height: 5-10 Weight: 167
College stats: 162 receptions, 22 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.35 40-yard dash, 4.19 short shuttle, 34 ½-inch vertical
A number of NFL people are uncomfortable about a 167-pound wide receiver. A good press corner will eliminate his release so he has to play off the line of scrimmage, and may ultimately wind up as a third-down slot receiver. Jackson can catch the ball, has return skills, and taking him is about the same risk as selecting Ted Ginn Jr. last year. Draft projection: Round 1.
Jackson: Combine highlights | Analysis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma
Height: 6-3 Weight: 224
College stats: 144 receptions, 21 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.68 40-yard dash, 4.24 short shuttle, 32-inch vertical
Kelly swears he has run 4.4 this spring, but NFL clubs have a high 4.6-4.7 time and that scares teams off. Kelly will run again and a faster time puts him back into play for the first round. Draft projection: Round 2.
Kelly: First Draft
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Donnie Avery, Houston
Height: 5-11 Weight: 192
College stats: 210 receptions, 19 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.34 40-yard dash, 3.91 short shuttle, 37 ½-inch vertical
Avery can really run, and occasionally flashes Torry Holt skills. Some teams have him downgraded for his inconsistent hands and body-catching habits, but 44 starts and a ton of production make him intriguing. His short shuttle means he can separate on the break or just run by a defender with his 4.3 speed. Draft projection: Round 2.
Avery: Combine highlights | Senior Bowl highlights, analysis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Mario Manningham, Michigan
Height: 5-11 Weight: 183
College stats: 137 receptions, 27 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.38 40-yard dash, 4.38 short shuttle, 35-inch vertical
Manningham has some off-the-field issues concerning marijuana, but he is hoping a letter he sent to every club can help with the damage control. He ran much faster at his pro day than he did at the combine (4.6), which is hard to explain considering the difference. He's confident, but that can work for or against him in different situations. What if his team is losing and he's not getting the ball? That's how one personnel director put it when I asked him about Manningham. Draft projection: Round 2.
Manningham: Combine highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Early Doucet, LSU
Height: 6-0 Weight: 203
College stats: 160 receptions, 20 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.59 40-yard dash, 4.45 short shuttle, 34 ½-inch vertical
This kid is this year's Anquan Boldin. Can he overcome the slow 40 times and get teams to just look at the game tapes? Is there enough evidence that he's crafty enough to beat man coverage? I like this guy in a West Coast "shallow crossing route" package. Draft projection: Round 2.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Andre Caldwell, Florida
Height: 6-0 Weight: 204
College stats: 185 receptions, 16 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.37 40-yard dash, 4.11 short shuttle, 36 ½-inch vertical
Caldwell has the speed, change of direction and size to be rated higher than this, but he isn't considered a complete receiver. His hands can be inconsistent and blocking isn't his strong suit, but I think he has a chance to have a solid career like his brother Reche Caldwell. Draft projection: Round 3.
Caldwell: Combine highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State
Height: 5-9 Weight: 182
College stats: 110 receptions, 17 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.37 40-yard dash, 4.15 short shuttle, 30 ½-inch vertical
This kid can fly on a football field. He just looks faster than any of the other guys on the field. He is built for the slot, making the pivot route almost impossible to cover. He can also run away from defenders on the shallow cross. Could be a terrific NFL return man. Draft projection: Round 3.
Jackson: Combine highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11. Eddie Royal, Virginia Tech
Height: 5-9 Weight: 184
College stats: 119 receptions, 12 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.39 40-yard dash, 4.34 short shuttle, 36-inch vertical
Royal has the same package as Dexter Jackson, but he is stronger (24 reps on the bench, tops for wide receivers) and he demonstrated at the Senior Bowl he can get behind a defense. Draft projection: Round 4.
Royal: Combine highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12. Earl Bennett, Vanderbilt
Height: 5-11 Weight: 209
College stats: 236 receptions, 20 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.48 40-yard dash, 4.33 short shuttle, 32-inch vertical
Bennett could be ranked higher by the time the draft. He has a second-round grade by some teams, while others see him as a late third-round selection. His play speed appears average on tape, but he does snatch balls and will fit in a West Coast short-route attack. His 11 yards per reception and just five touchdowns last year were partially due to the quarterback, but it has something to do with his skills as well. Draft projection: Rounds 3-4.
Bennett: Combine highlights
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13. Jordy Nelson, Kansas State
Height: 6-2 Weight: 217
College stats: 206 receptions, 19 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.51 40-yard dash, 4.35 short shuttle, 31-inch vertical
People who watched Nelson play in 2007 believe he's a first-round receiver and are very frustrated about where he sits heading into the draft. He has the size, production and speed to excel in the NFL. He had a few fine moments when I watched him at the Senior bowl practices. He is fast enough to be an effective seam-route runner. His numbers were off the charts last year when he caught 122 passes and got to the end zone 11 times. Three years from now when he's still in the NFL and more productive than some of the above mentioned players, he will get the last laugh. Draft projection: Rounds 3-4.
Nelson: Combine highlights | Senior Bowl analysis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. Jerome Simpson, Coastal Carolina
Height: 6-2 Weight: 199
College stats: 161 receptions, 44 TDs
Vital numbers: 4.48 40-yard dash, 4.52 short shuttle, 41-inch vertical
Simpson is this year's version of Jacoby Jones, who was drafted by the Texans in the third round out of Lane College. Simpson has the hands and arms to snatch a football, and his vertical leap makes him dangerous when it's time to go up after a ball. He is raw and will struggle with releases and coverage recognition early, but he's worth the time and effort. Draft projection: Round 4.

I predict bounce back season for Moss, and he may flourish under Zorn. He needs to pitch and catch as much as possible however this offseason to better learn how to adjust to JCs ballz (hee hee)

Greg,
Nothing at all on the Sheppard article. Just that they may trade him or may keep him. Reid will make the decision based on what offers they get. Lame article.

Greg, Chris is moving to Quincy initially, working sort of in that south part of the 'hub.' I could put you in touch with him via the email if you want to drop me a line, nateinthepdx at the gmail. He'll be out there in a few weeks, and, come fall, will need a friendly place to watch the Skins :)

there won't be any news until the draft....its all posturing..."maybe we trade him maybe we dont..now we need a LB...."
The articles written are just dudes filing stories of the horsiht the teams are shoveling out there to gin up rumors and miss information b/c its there j-o-b...
or "Draftmanship" as some Anon dude dubbed it...
I am not knocking it, just saying thats the deal...post draft the actual newz will start flowin g again...
Posted by: chris laRRy | April 16, 2008 9:29 AM
curz, thanks.
I don't know how some of those receivers are predicted to go in the first round, or second round. DeSean Jackson, I weighed as much as that cat my freshman year in high school. When he gets LIT UP, by a LB who has 70 pounds on him, something will give in his body.
Skins need to pluck Nelson in the second. I just have such a good feeling about that cat. Look at his short-shuttle time, versus other guys. He has as good, if not a better short shuttle than guys who are much faster than he is. Great change of direction skills. If they pass on him, ugh...I'm going to be pissed..

also guessing what the narratives will be in the 24 hour newz cycle...
Posted by: chris lArry | April 16, 2008 9:13 AM
I don't want to betray any unnecessary information about myself, but there is a tremendous Talk of the Town by Hendrik Herzberg (are they all tremendous?) about a new word used in the political campaign vocabulary ... "misspeak". [Other terms include "narrative" and "hope" ... forces are working to get the word "meme" into greater usage.]
Also, sicwidit, the primary thing I will miss about St. Joe is going to be Gibbspeak. Nothing made for great jibba jabba that yammering like that swinging soul. I loved it. Redzone play calling ... not so much.

CL, Anon. that's what I've been saying... no news (Greg). Just feeding the beast. Updates are only news worthy if it involves jail time or playing time. The rest is just blog fodder.
I was hanging out in Quincy this summer. Fun place.
Its official for me. Dorf is leaving Harrisonburg for bigger mountains. I'll be in Colorado Springs in August. Any hamsters know of any good Skins bars out there?

Wasn't quite following which Sheppard was the subject Greg was asking about ... till I found the article about Lito being shopped again (yes please ... will offer third and sixth round pick). I was HOPING it was going to be about Edell Sheppard, the tall receiver who used to be in Tampa Bay (not sure where he is now) ... who has had so-so seasons in terms of consistency so far (he's real young), but has had AWESOME games when playing for the Buccs against the Skins. Fortunately, the Buccs were kicked out of the Skins' virtual division this season so we don't have to face them again.

Lito a skin....hmmm...dont see inner division trading...but maybe that in vogue now, i must not have gotten that meme....
Posted by: chris laRRy | April 16, 2008 10:02 AM
what is a "meme"??
Posted by: Greg | April 16, 2008 10:04 AM
this blog is almost identical to reids article, but atleast we're getting new ones! three in the last 24 hours - thats progress!
anyway, i'm happy jason and the receivers are practicing but i'd really like to hear something about anthony mix. I know its a pipe dream to expect him to be any sort of answer for us, but it would be nice if he were good enough to be a solid #4 guy. It would make me feel alot more comfortable about our receiving corps. As it is, even if we get my favorite receiver in the draft, Jordy Nelson, i still wouldnt feel comfortable with Moss, ARE, Nelson, and Thrash being our top 4.
Posted by: talkshowhost | April 16, 2008 10:05 AM
tsh, the thread starter was posted before the article was. lots of time, the thread starter is what the reporter is thinking about writing about ... sometimes a first draft ... or stuff that got cut by the editor.

What I don't understand is why Philly would even think about shopping Lito Sheppard. I understand the bit about how Samuel becomes the de facto #1 CB (though predict underwhelmingness from him outside Belichekplanet), but why does that make Sheppard expendable? Is it just the investment in corners? I would think the other guy, Sheldon Brown, would be the trade fodder/nickel candidate, rather than the 26 year old Hawaii-vacation-exhibition-game guy.

meme (mēm)
noun
a unit of cultural information, as a concept, belief, or practice, that spreads from person to person in a way analogous to the transmission of genes (Etymology: short for mimeme: both coined by R. Dawkins (1941-), Brit biologist).

DC, re: Shepherd, agreed. I would think that having 2 good corners, is good, having 3? Even batter. That move is puzzling to me, especially when his relative young age is brought into the picture.
dc/cl, thanks for the update. I was unaware of the origin/meaning, that is to say, I was ignorant of those facts.
Posted by: Greg(Beantown) | April 16, 2008 10:23 AM
no worries sweeny, I like that you noticed....
I would be pro Lito trade....but do not see it happening
Posted by: chris lARry | April 16, 2008 10:30 AM
I would even be pro Sheldon Brown trade, but not for the third + sixth round offer I'd make for Lito.
I just thinking that the team needs to be prepared for Rogers to be unavailable all season ... so an older corner for a short term contract would provide me with more comfort than a rookie ... and because corner does not seem like the most critical use of any of the first three picks. I'm with the meme up here about starting the draft at the line of scrimmage. [That felt a little awkward.]
Posted by: dcsween | April 16, 2008 10:36 AM
Are these memes?
"Vincenzo Spumante Cerrato is an imbecile who has no business running the personnel for an NFL team."
"Dan Snyder is a terrible owner, and he cares more about profits than about winning, and our beloved team will never hoist the Lombardi while he owns it."
"Jason Campbell has sub-moron-level football intelligence."
MEMED.

While it's interesting to try and predict how the skins will do with the schedule (I've got them at 7-9), the hard part for me wasn't who or when they're playing as much, but how good will the skins actually be. They've got the talent to be decent but they've also got a new, very inexperienced HC in a very tough division. They're changing their offense with a young QB, and they've got several key players who are coming back from injury (Rogers, Jansen, McIntosh, Thomas, etc). That's a whole lot of question marks.
Posted by: mtnskinsfan | April 16, 2008 11:37 AM
Timing and momentum are critical. The most important things right now are (1) not to sustain injuries at key positions in the preseason and (2) to win that first game against the NY (football) Giants.

You know, I keep coming back to RI for insights like this: no injuries and win the first game. Reminds me of that other one about "we take them one game at a time." Or is it "We want to beat this week's opponent. We're not looking beyond them?"

dcsween
Two thoughts
1. Iggles have had a bad recent history with salary malcontents (see TO- a**hole for hire)
2. Iggles believe Sheldon Brown is more durable than Lito and hence a more reliable option.
While I have no significant objections to seeing what Lito's market value would be and if the price were right, making a trade, given how public the dangling has been, it's going to be interesting how the Iggles are going to smooth over Lito's ruffled feathers if he's in the Iggles defensive backfield throughout training camp and the regular season

Scout.com's own Adam Caplan is reporting that Georgia Tech Defensive End Darrell Robertson visited with the Redskins recently.
Given all the defenders the Redskins have had in for visits, it is a given that the Redskins will look to upgrade their defense in this draft.
Defensive Line has been marked as a high position of need for the Redskins. Phillip Daniels and Cornelius Griffin are getting a tad long in the tooth and the need for quality backups now is essential.
Back on January 23rd, Chris Steuber reported that the Redskins had interviewed Robertson at the Senior Bowl as well. So this makes the second visit with him, which could signify that their interest is a bit more than just interviewing any available player.
In that article, Steuber described the 6'4", 245 pound Robertson:
Robertson is a tall, rangy defender who thrives on making plays in the backfield. He's a good athlete who gets after the quarterback and takes good angles in pursuit. He finished his senior campaign with 36 tackles, 16 for a loss and 6.5 sacks. Robertson projects as a late third-, early fourth-round pick.
Currently, Scout.com has him ranked as the tenth best Defensive End in the 2008 Draft.
At 245 pounds, I would think Robertson would either have to gain significant weight or just be a situational pass rusher to have any shot in the NFL.

This thread seems way to informative and civil. Is it too late to post a hate filled Jasno sucks and you all are idiots if you don't agree with me invective to return us to this week's standard posting modus operandi?

Not sure if this passes for invective, Adam, but I would like to call BS on 'memetics' as yet another intellectual circle jerk (SJK) which does very little to expand anyone's understanding of anything.
This really takes me back... I similarly called BS on 'semiotics' back in colledge. I was right then, and I'm right now.

Just for kicks, a complete history of the Skins' draft picks... with draft round/pick number, All-Pro and Pro Bowl appearances, number of seasons as a primary starter, total starts, and more stats... great stuff.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/was.htm
Dig the 32-round drafts in the Forties! I guess the rosters were so decimated by the war effort that they had to basically rebuild every year. Amazing.
And don't sleep on the Supplemental Picks from '84 at the very bottom! Hello, Gary Clark. Hello, one of the Zendejas brothers!
