Skins Block The Saints
The New Orleans Saints have been looking to fill a void in their front office for a director of football administration since February and were recently rebuffed by the Redskins. The Saints wanted to interview Skins VP of football administration Eric Schaffer, but were denied, league sources said.
It's a slightly unusual move, but given the time of year - with the draft upcoming and lots of contracts to hammer out - not entirely surprising. Schaffer has been with the team for six years and spends most of his time doing deals, analyzing contracts and managing the nuances of the salary cap.
How much blame to put on him for the oodles of poor contracts and the NFL record $80-plus million in dead cap space since 2000 is hard to pinpoint, however, given how hands on owner Daniel Snyder is in this regard, and the fact that Vinny Cerrato and Joe Gibbs were also charting the course the past 4 years, with Schaffer taking cues from them and much lower down the hierarchy.
Two other teams blocked the Saints from interviewing their cap guys as well, league sources said, with both teams putting together new management teams. Atlanta refused to let Brian Xanders, their director of football administration, interview as well and Miami denied permission for the Saints to speak to Matt Thomas, their general counsel/football administration.
A message for Schaffer was not returned. The Saints lost their previous football administrations guy, Russ Ball, this off season when he went to Green Bay.

Here is my Worst-Case-Scenario Mock, that assumes all the sexy 1st and 2nd rounders are gone and we can't trade down:
1)Kentwan Balmer (DT)
2)Trevor Law (DT)
3)Roy Schuening (OG)
3)Eddie Royal (WR)
5)Colt Brennan (QB)
6)Jamar Adams (S)
7)Mike McGlynn (OG/OT)
7)Chris Harrington (DE)
7)Vince Hall (LB)
Not specifically familiar with the players with the picks in rounds 5-7, but i like the positions and found their names in a couple of mocks for us. I await your criticism.

I don't understand the hate on Nate. He has a passion and runs with it. Cynics rule the blogs in america because they can be 'unregistered' and attack under a stealth identity.
This wouldn't happen in Japan. Respecet should be recognized regardless of what format you are interacting.

This guy is wanted by other Ball Clubs and you still bagging on them? How you gonna blame anyone with Snyder as the Monarch?? He dosen't cut the guys. He just makes sure he can fit these guys under the cap.
Plus, a lot of teams are using his tactics now when he was the only one using them 5-6 years ago. This guy knows the cap. He should get big ups, JLaC.......

talkshowhost,
Again, Eddie Royal does not have the size we need for a WR- 5'10" 184. There are several bigger WR this year and we do not need any more Moss/ARE size receivers.

Posted by: | April 8, 2008 5:41 PM
4th, my only recollection of Doug Gabriel is from a mid-seasons fantasy football free agent ... for the Raiders. Is (or was) he actually good? Raiders doesn't seem like a place to be able to figure that out. In other news, the Bengals seem desperate.
Posted by: dcsween | April 8, 2008 5:42 PM
The nice thing is that most regulars would not fall for the spoofer who is steeling the names.
Posted by: Alex35332 | April 8, 2008 5:44 PM
He seemed to be good with the Raiders. He was out of the league last year when he was cut by the Raiders. Might be issues we are not privy to....
Bengals are extremely desparate. I wonder how BBP and LBP are feeling right now......
Posted by: 4th | April 8, 2008 5:46 PM
The wikipedias say that Doug Gabriel is 6'2".
I know that everyone here is anticipatorily in love with Anthony Mix (6'5"), but the Skins also have Billy McMullen (6'4") on the roster ... and he's actually played in more than five NFL games.
Posted by: dcsween | April 8, 2008 5:46 PM
thanks Curzon417. I am pretty sure we won't have a realistic shot at nelson or hardy without trading up or down and those are the only players that have the "best bang for your buck" value that make them worth considering IMO.

If we could trade down to early in 2nd rd, I think we could get Nelson.
Posted by: Curzon417 | April 8, 2008 5:51 PM
In the spirit of JlaC's previous post about the skins going after players of questionable character (Jerome Mathis), evidently Kansas CB Talib admitted to testing positive for pot while in college and his falling down draft boards. CB is a definite need for the skins - should they grab him? I'd probably pass. Why risk selecting a knucklehead in the first round.

Credibility with who? (or is it with whom?) Diehard Skins fans? Or people who tune in to read his take on whatever? [Frankly, this type of article would REEK of fraud to me if it were written by Jasno ... at least until things start to change a little.]
What I don't get is why people get so upset when Jasno rips into Vinny or The Owner and read it as "anti-Skins." Its anti those two.
Just like there is a difference between the jersey and the player wearing it, there is a difference btwn the Skins (as a symbol of the community) and the two guys who own and run the team.
I'm for the team ... people come and go.
Posted by: dcsween | April 8, 2008 6:00 PM
I would guess that more than half of the potential draftees have smoked Marrid to Juana. Just so happens a few got caught.
I see no big deal, especially with Talib. Calvin Johnson, Okoye, and Gaines Adams admitted to smoking and all were sleceted in the top 10....

Ricky Willams, did someone say Ricky Williams?
Posted by: BONG | April 8, 2008 6:03 PM
mtnskinsfan, you run the risk of getting a player like Randy Moss, or Warren Sapp. a slight risk, but you have to account for that. where there's smoke...

Credibility with the bloggers who say he needs to be tough on the Skins. Maybe in DC you get to see/hear more on the Skins i.e. radio and local tv, but here where I live it's the internet for me. I don't go to redskins.com because I do not want sugar coated info, but to me it does seem as if this FO IS trying to make a change.

Congratulations MVDame! And well done Nate for organising a great, fun contest!

Just a couple notes on your draft:
1)Kentwan Balmer (DT)
2)Trevor Law (DT)
3)Roy Schuening (OG)
3)Early Doucett(WR)
5)Colt Brennan (QB)
6)Jamar Adams (S)
7)Mike McGlynn (OG/OT)
7)Chris Harrington (DE)
7)Vince Hall (LB)
First isn't Law a Sexy pick for the 2nd Round? Secondly Brennan is not worth a 5th round pick, and I guarantee Mike McGlyn and Chris Harrington will be gone by the 5th if not the 6th round
