Kareem Moore

There will be plenty of talk about the trio of second-round picks the Skins selected in April, but I wanted to take a minute to touch on safety Kareem Moore. He's someone who plays a position of obvious need, where immediately playing time is hardly out of the question, and he's also been in the news a little bit because of his absence from mini camp in early May.

I've received several emails about him recently and how he was injured, so I exchanged emails with his agent, Jeremy Sanders, on the topic. Here's what Jeremy had to say:

"Kareem injured his knee ironically while participating in a college all-star game in early Feb. We did not know the status of his knee at the time, so he started the game and played well. We later learned the extent of his injury and he had a scope performed on the knee about a week after the all-star game. He then rehabbed for a few weeks and performed all drills during two pro days, one at Ole Miss and another at Nicholls State. Scouts knew of his injury and could see he was performing well even after the knee was scoped a few weeks prior to the workouts.

"Kareem was widely considered the best safety in the south region during his senior year. The Redskins knew of his prior knee scope but could definitely see his upside. (Several other teams were equally as interested). So after he was drafted, the Redskins had him examined by the team doctor in Alabama. The doctor determined that he should have a second scope to fix the knee completely. The Redskins know that he is a player that can help the team immediately so they wanted the doctor to scope the knee asap. I think the scope took place the day after the draft ended.

"He is rehabbing now and hopes to be at full speed by the start of training camp. The doctor is expecting a full recovery and the knee will be stronger through this process.

"The Redskins made a great move by getting a player of Kareem's ability in the 6th round. He has the ability to be a starter for the team this year. He has great ability and is a great person as well. I think the fans in Washington will see this."

The Redskins will need some of their second day picks to be players - and in some cases provide cherished depth immediately - and missing the entire off season won
S work in the youngster's favor, but he's someone to keep an eye on once camp opens in July.

Thanks for the info on Kareem, Jason...and Happy Memorial Day!

Hopefully the most recent new plan will work and we will actually develop bench talent. Moore was a very player and if we can hit on him and a couple of other guys (like Golston and Montgomery) then we should be in real good shape. Not needing a starter this year helps.

Three day weekend/hangover - BONG!

Posted by: BigMurf08 | May 26, 2008 9:37 AM

Nice agent-spin:
"widely considered the best safety in the south region"
"could definitely see his upside"
"several other teams were equally as interested"
"can help the team immediately"
"the knee will be stronger"
"Redskins made a great move"
"player of Kareem's ability"
"has the ability to be a starter for the team this year"

Oh brother:
folks, all that ability, and all that interest from other teams and all the upside slipped all the way down Round 6!!!

Talk is easy; let's hope he can play come July!

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | May 26, 2008 10:26 AM

Thank you for the good news.

Posted by: + | May 26, 2008 10:36 AM

It's all about production on the field.

Posted by: Shock | May 26, 2008 10:44 AM

"Kareem was widely considered the best safety in the south region during his senior year."

So why was he drafted 150 picks after Kenny Phillips from Miami. Craig Steltz LSU went 60 picks before him. Agents may as well be used car salesman as all that pours outs their mouth is a bunch of bs.

Jason, you think we could get one of these about each of the redskins draft picks?

Posted by: follybeach | May 26, 2008 11:00 AM

follybeach

That would require him to actually do his job instead of just bashing the front office! No you can't have one for each pick.

Excllent pont. That said, what else is there to do with a sixth rounder?

Teams could pick a guy who is a sixth round talent, and chances are pretty good he's cut, practice squad, or special teams, if you're lucky.

Or they can reach for a guy with an asterisk. Pick a player who maybe could shoulda woulda gone higher save for injury, the system he was in, or some other factor, like false character issues.

Look at the 'skins second day picks and the ones who've worked out--aren't many--fit that asterisk category--specifically Monty and Golston.

Sure his agent is filled with chocolate nougat, but I'd rather take a flyer on someone like that than a "sixth round value"

Watched some of Carrier last night.

Man, 15 Bolters in a row! One F/A-18 jock, after he got down, showed the camera his hand, still shaking. How hard is landing a jet on a carrier at night that a macho fighter pilot willingly shows the world what it does to him? I'm a former AF guy, but even AF pilots admit night carrier landings (especially on a pitching deck) have the highest pucker factor going.

Then the last guy, the jock who is retiring, who volunteered to go up to fly a fuel bird because he's so damn good, sticks the landing. He's the last plane in, and there's no one up there to re-gas him if he can't make it. Great stuff.

To the vets.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Vikings on Friday waived DE Erasmus James, the former first-round draft pick who had a series of knee injuries during his time with Minnesota.

James leaves the Vikings with five career sacks and 38 tackles. Making the move this long before the start of training camp gives James the chance to catch on with another team.

Erasmus James, anyone?

i hope monty becomes a beast this year. and some of the other youngsters like him.

for all of the talk of jim zorn and the three new receivers and JC, i'd love to see the defense get even better.

of course, RIP, 21. we will always miss him.

but there is a big group of guys coming back from last year, and aside from the new england (and seattle) game- they were a solid lot. borderline excellent.

i'm sure it's wishful thinking for a chris wilson and monty, golston, lorenzo & company to make this year the manifestation of the youth movement and really step it up to elite status. they'll probably need a few other guys like smoot and marcus washington to stay healthy, and rocky to get himself healthy. all big ifs.

but, the defense could be really fun to watch this year. there are some hitters.

should be interesting to see how different blache is from grilliams. grilliams called some pretty sporty ones toward the end of the season last year. minnesota and at the meadowlands come to mind...

anyway, HAIL!

Posted by: dwdjmu | May 26, 2008 2:33 PM

I would sign Erasmus to the vet min. and see how his work ethic is in the ota's and training camp

Posted by: Riot905 | May 26, 2008 2:36 PM

What do you guys think about the 5'9 twin of Fred Smoot we drafted in the 4th round. Not so much biological twin or even ability but trash talking twin.

Posted by: Riot905 | May 26, 2008 2:41 PM

Tryon looks like a competitor, a short one...

Let's hope he can catch a football, unlike Carlos Rodgers.

Posted by: Chia Pet | May 26, 2008 2:50 PM

The blog seems somewhat dead already, can't wait for ota's to start up again. When exactly will that be, this week or next week?

Posted by: Riot905 | May 26, 2008 3:08 PM

i think they need more trash talkers out there.

none of the linebackers are really that big of S talkers, so if it's the secondary that's got to step it up- so be it.

i think the whole team has lacked attitude for years. i'd like to see the offensive line get a little nastier, too.

i used to love when tre johnson would pull and just level somebody- and then trash talk the guy into further embarassment.

Hey have you heard anything about curtis gatewood.I watched him play at vandy.he played D.E.was very explosise off the line i hope he make's the team great up side even at L.B.

Posted by: Chia Pet | May 26, 2008 1:44 PM

No, how about Rick James? Or Susan St. James? Or Jesse James? All three have more career sacks than Erasmus.

Posted by: Leevi | May 26, 2008 5:52 PM

I like what little I've heard about this guy. Only had 2 years of experience so there's probably plenty to refine in his game. Could have done with less agent spin though.

Posted by: HMG | May 26, 2008 6:38 PM

I'll believe it when I see it.

I just hope he's good enough to make the team and help out as a #2 and a STer

Just what we need......another defensive guy coming off a late season torn ACL. He could join Rogers and McIntosh on the bench til fall.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 26, 2008 8:12 PM

Tough thing to deal with right now... no matter how quickly he heals, he'll probably be a half-step slower and a good bit less explosive when we first see him; combined with the raw, explosive speed of the pro game, it's going to take some time to get his legs under him.
That's the thin line between "just a guy" Pro and Insurance Salesman of the Quarter.

Posted by: cload & daggar | May 26, 2008 8:15 PM

Good blog entry JLC -- look forward to reading more!

I expect Kareem will be the backup FS when the season starts. Hopefully he'll be healthy by the start of camp and be a good, long term replacement for Prioleau...

Posted by: Siris | May 26, 2008 9:01 PM

What have you heard about the other 2nd day picks? Who's impressed?

I think Brooks has a good chance to be the punter and Brennan the 3rd QB.

Tryon has to beat out Eubanks, Westbrook, or Torrence to claim the 5th CB spot. If the Skins keep five CBs, then only two of the four incumbents and rookies will make the final roster as the first three are already held by Springs, Smoot, and Rodgers. My guess is Torrence and Westbrook, with Eubanks on the bubble and Tryon to the practice squad.

If SS Horton and DE Jackson play well in the training camp -- they could also be practice squad candidates. Assuming everyone stays healthy, then I'd be surprised if Horton beats out Fox and Jackson bests Wilson.

Posted by: Siris | May 26, 2008 9:20 PM

I also believe all the first day picks (WR Thomas, TE Davis, WR Kelly, and OG Rinehart) will make the team.

We'll see what happens in 2-3 years... But the Skins 2008 draft would have to be considered pretty successful; with 3-4 starters discovered and 7 out of 9 draft picks on the roster.

Looks like I'm talking to myself...

How have the undrafted players looked?

Last year, I believe the Skins signed 6 or more undrafted players. This year, the competition for backup OG should be intense. If Wade falters again at G/T, then he could be a final cut. That could result in Kerry Brown or Andrew Crummey making the team and one or both of the losers going to the practice squad.

Another good JLC article. I think that more than Kareem's agent had good things to say about him around draft time. I like this kid and think that he will make the team along with our first four picks.

Like siris, I like to maintain that optimistic outlook for 2008 and the draft picks we sign even with the risk of a bigger disappointment if thing go wrong.

Posted by: Curzon417 | May 27, 2008 1:08 AM

Oh, and Larry Bud, that was some serious code you were using. That vodka almost made it read like Russian.

Well, like many before me this weekend, looks like I am monoblogging tonight. Sitting here catching up on what FB news happened over the weekend, drinking some bacardi 151 and watching some John Wayne.

Would like to see write up on some of our rookie FAs. At this point any Skins info would make me happy.

Posted by: Curzon417 | May 27, 2008 1:29 AM

Siris, Prioleau is gone. He's one of Williams' guys from the Buffalo days that's not expected to return. I don't know if it's official, but there was word he would join him in Jacksonville. One of the reasons why safety was such a need for the Skins going into the draft.

Posted by: brownwood26 | May 27, 2008 5:42 AM

All this football talk on here, I was trolling, it got me all excited. I turned on a AFL game and after 3-4 minutes got board and found myself regretting that decision.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 27, 2008 6:54 AM

It doesn't hurt to look for the upside on somebody who has been hurt.

The Bolts drafted a guy who sat out his senior year with an injury. Cromartie has worked out OK so far.
