Picking Up Two Terps
Ok, this blog has been all web and no log today, so here's a little bit of news that just came over the transom: the Redskins signed two undrafted free agents today, both University of Maryland guys: offensive lineman Andrew Crummey and tight end Jason Goode.
Crummey is 6-foot-5, 301 pounds and was a second-team all-American last fall. Goode is 6-3, 238, and had 36 catches for 401 yards and three TDs in his College Park career. And as a bonus, both players have an extraneous "e" in their last name.
That's it for now ...

Gentlemen,
I took it upon myself to very quickly photoshop up your proposed burgundy on burgundy uniforms and have uploaded the photo to the wiki (oh, and i joined the wiki in the process. Fun!)
I think burgundy on burgundy could work:

What were the other uniform ideas? Black pants? Black jerseys?
Posted by: swb | May 8, 2008 4:58 PM
swb, how about burgundy socks and gold shoes?
Posted by: dcsween | May 8, 2008 5:00 PM
I think that the "e" are superfluous rather than extraneous.

swb-
Here was one of the other color combinations. Please colorize the picture of Sean Taylor's uniform in which he is wearing the black socks. Thanks.
"My personal vote for a new home uniform is maroon jerseys and black pants. The helmets will also be maroon. The yellow is used only as an accent color on the jersey, and for things like gloves and shoes.
Road jerseys will probably be yellow or black, with maroon pants. Depends on what the other team is wearing."

Man, what's up with the Redskins signing Jason Goode? We don't need another pass-catching TE on the team. And why Goode? Does his family own an alarm clock company or something? This is some jive-ass stuff if you ask me.

If Jason Goode is any good, then Tyler Ecker and his un-good groin will not say "Oh Goode"

I don't think Crummey was 2nd team All-American, maybe 2nd team all-acc but definitely not 2nd team all-american.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland senior offensive guard Andrew Crummey earned All-America honors from the Associated Press on Tuesday, despite missing more than five games this season with a fractured fibula.
Crummey was a third-team choice after securing second team All-America honors from The Sporting News last week. He was also a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice this season.

I would like to see a white bottom yellow top, similar to the throwback but just switch the color scheme around. The throwback 75th anniversary uniform would make a good 3rd uniform, but at this point, i really like the tradition in how our uniform has stayed constant over the history of the team and do not want the top 2 choices to be changed

and I think Tyler Ecker will surprise alot of people this year. Reports out of ashburn are that he completely reshaped his body, got cut and bulked up significantly, so i expect him to make the roster as a third string tight end/ blocking tight end and for him to contribute heavily of special teams

riggo drill -
Maybe you didn't hear, but Ecker missed last weekend's mini-camp with a groin muscle pull, which is basically the same thing that got him put on injured reserve last year. Don't look for Ecker to be around for too long. There's a good chance that as soon as he passes a physical, he will be cut.

And what the heck is a 'transom' anyway?
It's the back end of a boat, in some cases. You can hook an outboard to it.
Posted by: | May 8, 2008 5:49 PM
Transom (architectural), the horizontal lintel or beam across a window, dividing it into stages or heights. In the U.S. it also can refer to a fixed window over a door or another window.
Transom (nautical), in naval architecture, is the surface that forms the stern of a vessel.

4-12, looking back in recent weeks (trying to figure out how many TEs are currently on the roster), I get the feeling that the poster known as "JD" may be the Sports Editor above.
I had thought there were more TEs, but its only five: Cooley, Yoder, Fred Davis, Tyler Ecker, and now Jason Goode.
Another fun thing to do is to go the Skins site and click "roster" then "transactions" ... seems like Burl Toler is the big winner for getting signed and released multiple times. Also, is it news to anyone else that Jimmy Farris was on the roster again this past season from Nov. 15th to Dec. 15th?
Finally, thinking about Jesse Lumsden (as if a white guy could play halfback in the NFL!), I researched and learned that the first CFL preseason game is the second week of June and then after two more preseason games, their season starts ... they might be bringing out there talent just in time to get pilfered for NFL training camps!

The Skins signed another right guard (Crummey)? He's big (6-5, 311) and fairly fast (5.36-40), but don't they still need to find a backup left guard? The Skins already have Fabini, Wade, Rinehart, Geisinger, and Brown competing for backup RG or RG/RT. But I wonder -- just how easy it is for a guard to transition from the right to left side?

All kidding aside, signing Crummey is a good move, as he is one of those players whose stock fell because he was dinged in his final year. Kind of like Golston and Monty. If he works out, great. if not, nothing ventured.

I play basketball twice a week, and have played for 13 years now, at some stages 4 games a week. I also run, ride and have played Aussie Rules. I have never had a soft tissue injury in my life, not even a strain. I also never stretch. I had heard that there is no proof that stretching actually helps, and found this article.
http://weighttraining.about.com/od/physicaltherapy/a/hamstring.htm
"Now this may seem like heresy to anyone who has been told to stretch their hamstrings to prevent hamstring injury, but there is no consistent evidence that a stretching program prevents hamstring injury or even that 'tight' hamstrings predispose to injury. Stretching may even make things worse in some circumstances"

O-Line Depth Chart: I'm hoping this is what it looks like come week 1.
LT: Samuals, Heyer, Fabini
LG: Kendall, Rhinehart, Fabini Brown
C: Rabach, Crummey
RG: Thomas, Rhinehart, Fabini, Brown
RT: Jansen Heyer, Fabini
I keep on hearing that Wade will be cut for salary cap/production reasons

Andrew is a steal as an undrafted free agent. He was an all-american, and had he not broken his fibula in the east-west shrine game he would be a 3rd or 4th round pick. Oh yeah, it was his second broken fibula in 4 months. He is completely healed and will make the team.

As I stated in my previous post, Crummey has the potential to play Center, which is probably one of their main reasons for signing him, not to mention the success they had last year in developing Heyer.
Per ESPN Insider:
"Crummey also has seen action at center. Crummey has the versatility, athleticism and aggressiveness to develop into a valuable reserve that can provide depth at guard as well as center"
Posted by: RIV | May 8, 2008 6:58 PM
I'm suprised nobody picked up on this. Somebody noted that "Crummey" is an unfortunate last name, but I like the idea that the signed both at the same time. Kind of like a package deal. Sounds like some of these people think signing Crummey was a good idea but signing Goode was a crummy idea.

If you're counting Alexander then thats 10, but I listed 9, which is good to know after seeing that thats the same number of OL we had on the roster last year. Besides Alexander is an awesome blocking TE, but I think Brown, Crummey, and Rhinehart have more potential as Offensisve Lineman, in which case we should have Alexander split time between short yardage TE and DT.
On top of that I don't want to put Brown on the practice squad. I think he has a lot of potential working under Joe Bugel and the thought of someone picking him up off waivers scares me. On the other hand we might be able to get away with putting Crummey on the practice squad, but either way I'm glad to see we have a guy that we can possibly back up Rabach as he (Rabach) missed time during the Arizona and Green Bay games last year.
Either way Offensive Line is now a strength, assuming those 3 young guys develop into quality players, especially Rhinehart and Brown.

I saved a copy of our opening day roster last season so I can refer back to it and see which battles for roster spots will be tight. So obviously it's only a guide, and won't be exactly the same. I reckon with the shift to a WCO we might take an extra WR.

ESPN has Goode listed as a FB.
Strengths: Has a quick first step, shows adequate footwork and can get into position as a blocker. Keeps head up when combo blocking with tackles and shows adequate lateral mobility when asked to slide off the initial block to pick up a linebacker. Plays with a good motor, has adequate upper body strength and flashes the ability to sustain blocks. As a receiver, has adequate agility and does a good job of avoiding contact when releasing on routes. Changes directions fairly well for size and runs adequate routes. Snatches the ball out of the air and isn't going to drop many passes should catch. Occasionally makes the first defender miss and is a powerful open field runner that can pick up some yards after the catch. Has experience lining flexed out wide, played H-Back at Maryland is versatile. Though an injury hindered him during his true freshman season in 2004, he hasn't missed a game since then appears to be durable.
Weaknesses: Fails to deliver a violent initial punch, hasn't learned to roll hips into blocks and isn't going to jar many defenders at the point of attack. Plays too high, lacks elite bulk and lacks ideal lower body so is liable to get driven back if asked to line up in the traditional tight end slot at the NFL level. Lunges, loses balance a little too much and has problems sustaining blocks consequently. At times takes sound angles to downfield blocks but takes poor angles at other times, struggles to adjust to moving targets in space and has some problems getting into position at the second level as a result. Hasn't carried the ball since high school and is a raw runner. Has adequate-not-great top-end speed and isn't going to be much of a big-play threat at the next level.
Overall: Goode played in just one game as a true freshman in 2004. In his sophomore and junior seasons (2005-'06), he played in all 24 games as a reserve, posting a combined 19 receptions for 188 yards (9.9 average). Serving in a hybrid tight end/H-back role as a senior, Goode played all 13 games (four starts) and turned in 17 receptions for 213 yards (12.5 average) and three touchdowns. Goode possesses the tools to contribute in a system that uses H-Backs and features them in the passing game. However, he is a classic tweener because he isn't big enough to develop into an every-down tight end, he is not a natural fullback and he doesn't have the burst to move to running back. This is why Goode projects as a rookie free agent.

take my props for the scoop on the Post staff on that one.
A few quick hitters on Crummey...he was brought into play guard and center. In college, he excelled at pass protection and in the run game his best asset has been his ability to pull and stretch blocking schemes. This had to have been something Bugel was begging for because none of the other reserve guards can do either very well.

Posted by: MJ | May 8, 2008 9:13 PM
Not really, but we can survive with Heyer or Fabini playing the left side. Rhinehart might also be able to fill in at LT since he played it in college, but then again he's being moved to Guard for a reason and playing LT in the NFL is no picnic.
Posted by: RIV | May 8, 2008 11:28 PM
I believe it was riggo drill above who said above that the Skins' unis have been 'constant throughout the team's history'... doesn't seem like that's really the case. They've worn the same unis for most of the past 30 years, but that doesn't constitute a majority of their 75-year history.
Until the 70s it seems like we wore burgundy shirts and gold britches quite a lot.
I couldn't find much of this except for single photos of dudes in uniform. But here's a tiny little image which displays some of the uni combos over the years:

The left guard position is the easiest position after center to play on the offensive line. There was an exellent article by Russ Tucker, a former Redskin, on the difficulty of each OL positions. He listed positions in a descending order of difficulty and provided indepth analysis: LT, RT, RG, LG and C.

I think I'm coming around on pairing our current burgundy jersey (not the darker one we wore for the 70th anniversary throwbacks, which I did not like) with golden britches based on the current burgundy britches, just switching burgundy for gold wherever they occur. I think that would look pretty darn good. One fan's opinion...

M, I'm with you, I'm not worried about the left guard spot per se. Any of these backups, aided by a steady diet of profanity-laden old-school coaching/hectoring from Buges, would probably be fine over there.
It's the health of the line as a whole that I think is the primary concern. Getting the top five guys to play close to 100% of our snaps together this season. Man, would that be nice.

Rinehart may be able to displace Fabini which would allow Brown or maybe Crummey to make the roster. Depending on how many OL the team keeps.

We get to have a couple of extra roster spots and 12 men on the field on offensive downs, since we have a rookie head coach who's never been even a coordinator, in the interest of parity, right? Or did I dream that?

NO to changing colors. I've hated the fact that we lost the gold pants back in '81 or whenever it was. Because, if the colors are burgandy and gold the damn unis should be burgandy and gold. Change the helmet, change the mascot, change the name, change the owner; but not the colors! More bling! More gold; less white. It ain't high school the b-on-b and white on white is soooo "Friday night lights." It should be burgandy and gold and new unis. Now it won't happen until the name changes unless another reason to take the team to court.

I see the conversation has finally turned to the Redskins...
If I had my way, the Skins would wear the throwbacks from the '02 season (with the spear helmets and gold pants). Better shade of burgundy and it looks better with black shoes.
That said, I think the current unis are fine. My only issue is that they've been wearing black shoes for the last two years, which in my opinion looks hideous when you wear a predominantly white uniform. It just looks dumb to have black shoes when you don't have black in your colors. Zorn will win my affection if he gets the team to wear white shoes again.
Wow, I just went Uni-Watch on Page 2 of ESPN.com right there...

Good news about Crummey. I like it, as has been stated previously, low risk, but big reward factor. I've gotta think that between Crummey, Brown, Reinhart, the Redskins have gotten a possible core of players that could make the team, and push some of the older cats out.

No, I have never met Rhee, but I admire the vigor, energy, and new ideas that she has brought to her job -- and Mayor Fenty for picking and supporting her.
Both of my kids are out of the Oyster School now, but the parents who are still associated with Oyster have been very frustrated, and their chief frustration has been the principal. She has done a particularly bad job in the last year of expanding the bi-lingual program through the middle school grades.
The Oyster School is a wonderful asset and both my kids are bilingual. The teachers have been incredibly good and they deserve better leadership than they've gotten since Sra. Guzman arrived.

On the uniform front, white on white is terrible. I would go Burgandy on Gold with black cleates. Or B on B with Black cleates. I also think a new design would be good, spice it up a little. They could also add some Black to the uniform. I love the spear helmet.
Posted by: kmdp4 | May 9, 2008 8:47 AM
I think I'm coming around on pairing our current burgundy jersey (not the darker one we wore for the 70th anniversary throwbacks, which I did not like) with golden britches based on the current burgundy britches, just switching burgundy for gold wherever they occur. I think that would look pretty darn good. One fan's opinion...
-Nate in the PDX
Posted by: | May 8, 2008 11:39 PM
Nate, I'm totally with you. Basically it's the 72-78 home unis......jersery is very slightly different (solid whitwe numbers, no outline) and the burgundy is a bit darker. Refer to this Billy Kilmer pic on ebay......
Posted by: dlhaze | May 9, 2008 8:52 AM
F Lebron. I hope the Wiz get him in the playoffs next year so he can get his taint handed to him.
I think the white on white is OK. If for no other reason than the fact that they don't wear those retro-80s burgundy and gold striped socks with them. But I would be interested in seeing the burgundy on burgundy IF and only if they can make the burgundy match. I can't tell you how crappy it looks to have the burgundy jersey not match the burgundy helmet (the burgundy jerseys looked more red in the 80s).
Posted by: brownwood26 | May 9, 2008 8:53 AM
Sorry Greg, forgot to sign my name. Yeah, Lebron has minimal help. Jordan would have 0 championships without Pippen...
Posted by: cosmofla | May 9, 2008 8:54 AM
dlhaze, that's the spirit, man! I should have thought to find a pic.
Some solid gold trousers -- not bright yellow, a color that should be avoided, as somebody noted above -- matched with our current burgundy shirts. Hell yes.
Seems like that color combo would be awesome in and of itself, would make our two primary colors its two primary colors, would not have the monochrome effect (same color pants and shirt) which I don't favor, would not include white pants (do I need to mention Visible Jockstrap Lines again? I think not), AND would be evocative of the team's history, since that combo may have been worn more than any other in the team's 75 seasons.
But, the million dollar question, would it sell? Seems like uni decisions hinge on selling jerseys, and changing just the pants color by definition wouldn't sell any more jerseys.
Eureka! It's time for the NFL to start selling replica and authentic uniform pants!

The jersey Kilmer was wearing is a lot closer to a true burgundy than what the Skins wear now. Unfortunately, anything Kilmer wears is not going to look good. Better they show a picture of Charley Taylor or Larry Brown. I'm for the team wearing a true burgundy and gold rather than yellow. Dan can afford it.
The last throw-backs the Skins wore, based on the 70s, were horrible. They made the players look like Ronald McDonald.

I love the Throwbacks they wore last year but they were tainted by the egg we laid whilst wearing them vs. the Giants.
I personally would love to see the dark burgundy Jersey's, similar to the ones from the 75th but without the bamma yellow stripes on the sleeves. If we paired them with pants of the same color and helmets with the spear logo, I'd be a happy camper. Very simplistic and intimidating. Away would keep the same pants, white jersey's with burgundy numbers. Keep the gold to a minimum. I'm not down with the bling.

Nate, having the top 5 OL play close to 100% of snaps over the course of the season would be great. I think that people forget that prior to last season Redskin's OL was one of the top lines in the league. They lost Dockery, but he was the weakest link at the time and Kendall is a capable (and much cheaper) replacement. What people forget is that last season's injuries on the offensive line were well above the norm. They lost both starters on the right side of offensive line for the season. In one game (it may have been the game against Buffalo), they lost to injuries all offensive tackles but Samuels and I even recall "do-it-all" defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander finishing the game on OL. The OL should improve this season, because they are returing two starters that they lost last season due to injuries. I do think, however, that by next season someone would have to take Kendall's place as the starter and hopefully it will be one of young offensive linemen they are grooming now.

I have to confess that I didn't realize that people got so excited about uniforms.
Is it because specific variations remind you of particular periods of glory or certain players? I don't think there's an equivalent in any sports I followed back in the UK, so I'm intrigued by this.

I suppose there may have been an equivalent in soccer at one time - when they didn't change the kits every year - but I don't recall it being a part of fan-dom either in my youth or adulthood.

Posted by: SMACK | May 9, 2008 11:17 AM
Redcoat, I reckon the disconnect is because your football sides have a tendency to change their kits every few seasons, so you're inured to this sort of debate...
I realise it's not a perfect parallel because the third/alternate kit has been prevalent much longer over there, and sponsor logos have been a design factor for a long time, but to cite one example, see how Man Utd have changed the fundamental appearance of their kits over and over and over through the years.
http://www.prideofmanchester.com/sport/mufc-kits.htm
Seems like over there it's about frequently introducing 'variations on a theme' which can vary wildly, where over here it's a much bigger deal to make such dramatic changes. I dunno...

My $.02. I like the burgundy and white unis (road and away) or the all white unis. All burgundy or black and burgundy not so much. Always thought the gold pants were kind of fugly. Also definitely like the spear on the helmet.
Posted by: skinswest | May 9, 2008 11:25 AM
Very true Nate. Main reasons:
1. Corporate sponsors come and go.
2. Players names are now on the back so you can't just 'wear a number' any more.
3. Clubs keep ALL revenue from kit sales!
So the constant rotation of kits - with some of the most egregious like my own Red Devils having anywhere up to 4 new per season - is actually a huge source of revenue for the teams.
When you combine that with United's global fan base you understand why they are the most valuable sports team on the planet, Skins/Grrls included.
Maybe that's why I didn't get into that. By the time I could afford to buy replica shirts, etc. I didn't want to because I begrudged getting fleeced that way.

The 50s and 60s were the heyday of 'holiday camps' in the UK, and Butlin's (also known at Butlitz - to sound like Colditz) were the market leaders. The camp assistants/entertainers were called Redcoats.
But I have to admit Nate, you got me on that. As I've said before, my ambition is to one day march in the Leesburg 4th July parade in full Redcoat attire.
But I need to get my affairs in order before I do that as Mrs Redcoat will kill me even if the crowd doesn't!

Posted by: Sweet Feet | May 9, 2008 10:09 AM
Sweet Feet, most teams primarily run behind the right side of their offensive line behind their grinders with occasional runs to the left side where they have their best pass protectors at QB's blind side. Redskin's drop in running ypc average last season has something to do with the loss of the right side of the OL to season ending injuries (Randy Thomas and Jensen). Redskins had to run behind the left side of their OL last season because they could not run effectively behind Fabini at the right side. This made their running game very predictable, just recall the Giant's goal line stand when all Giant's players knew that Redskins will be running to the left. Dock is a nice player and I wish him well at Buffalo (it was a no brainer for him to take their offer considering how much they were willing to overpay him), but I won't miss his false start penalties. Plus Redskins got a compensatory third round pick due to his departure.

So Great One, I will join you in the hope that Clinton will have a great season statistically. Not a career high for him, but top 5 in the league sounds good to me. This hinges on the corresponding hope that the new passing game clicks and keeps opposing Ds honest.
Also, I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I saw our leading rusher for 2003, and saw his total yards. Ugh.

Chiefs could turn to Vanderjagt or Carney?
The Chiefs' strategy for solving their kicking troubles was a simple one. Too simple, as it turned out. Their solution was to sign the best available free-agent kicker, Seattle's Josh Brown. They had no backup plan. So when Brown instead signed with the Rams in the opening days of free agency, the Chiefs were left at kicker with journeymen Nick Novak and Billy Cundiff, an undrafted rookie in North Carolina's Connor Barth and plenty of continuing unease over the situation. "We'll have to decide at the end of the day if one of these three guys is the guy or do we have to go out and get one of those old guys who doesn't want to come to training camp?" coach Herm Edwards said. "Hopefully we don't have to do that, but if we have to, we'll do it." The "old guys" Edwards referred to include John Carney, who kicked for the Chiefs toward the end of last season, and former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt, who worked out for them early in the spring. Both are free agents.

Tall, possession type dudes.
I don't think we need three. But I understand after watching WR's who couldn't get on rides at Six-Flags. We have a want for the guys 6-2 and taller. But you'll still need a couple of smurfs, those are usually your burners.

Ellis: Cowboys could trade Roy Williams
Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams has doubts about whether he fits into Coach Wade Phillips' scheme and has been isolating himself from his teammates, defensive end Greg Ellis said Thursday. Ellis told Sirius NFL Radio that Williams' concerns about his place in Phillips' version of the 3-4 defense surfaced last summer at training camp in San Antonio. "He said, Greg, this defense does not fit me. I don't fit in well with this defense at all,' " the Dallas Morning News' Web site quoted Ellis as saying. "So when he told me that, I was like, Well, man, it's still new. Get used to it, and it'll probably be fine for you.' And, obviously, I think it came to be true. Just like he said, he doesn't fit what's going on here in Dallas right now.' " Ellis expressed optimism that Williams will feel more comfortable this season, while also suggesting the Cowboys could trade the former Oklahoma star.

NFL legend Joe Montana suing his first wife
Former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana is suing his first wife, Kim Moses, and a Texas auction house for selling love letters and memorabilia from his time at the University of Notre Dame. The other items include Joe's freshman I.D. card, a University of Notre Dame letter of intent and Joe and Kim's 1979 marriage certificate. Joe is suing in excess of $75,000 -- claiming the items were obtained and sold by Moses without his consent.

No trading with the Cowboys.
Posted by: Chia Pet | May 9, 2008 1:54 PM
The Cowboys tried to move Williams closer to the line of scrimmage last season to take advantage of his hitting ability, but that plan hit a snag when cornerbacks Terence Newman and Anthony Henry suffered injuries.
Later in the season, Phillips kept Williams on the sidelines as much as possible in obvious passing situations. Williams has struggled throughout his career in pass coverage.
Despite recording just two interceptions and failing to notch either a sack or a forced fumble, Williams was named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster a fifth-straight time last season.

While he has some struggles in pass coverage obviously, that cat can bring the wood. I'd ask him to get down to about 220 pounds, then pair him with a good coverage safety, and blitz the heck out of him.

Wasted 2nd Rounder Symbolizes Skins' Failures
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Elfin
WarpathInsiders.com May 9, 2008
Fred Davis was the nation's top tight end as a USC senior in 2007. Despite his preference for his pillow over practice on the final day of minicamp, the 22-year-old from Toledo seems like a good guy.
However, that doesn't mean that it was smart for the Redskins to use their second choice, 47th overall, on Davis. Chris Cooley's presence will prevent Davis from having the impact that his talent says he should have. Cooley, a Pro Bowl tight end in 2007, is just 25 and is signed through 2012. He's also perhaps the most popular Redskin.
With so many other needs, the Redskins don't need two Chris Cooleys. Even with injuries to such starting tight ends as Jeremy Shockey, Todd Heap and L.J. Smith, only two backups at the position caught as many as 30 passes last season:
Ben Utecht of high-powered Indianapolis, who has since signed with Cincinnati; and Chicago's Greg Olsen, the only tight end taken in the first round of the 2007 draft. And neither Utecht nor Olsen reached even 40 catches.
But with no successor to 35-year-old left defensive end Phillip Daniels or injury-plagued 30-year-old strongside linebacker Marcus Washington on the roster, the Redskins took a luxury like Davis.
Perennial contenders New England and Indianapolis can draft the best players on their boards, but when you've won a single playoff game in 15 years and you're 59-72 this millenium, you fill your needs.
Daniels will be 36 next year and Washington will be an old 31. Instead of grooming their successors, the Redskins are looking at replacing them in 2009 with rookies or over-priced free agents.
Does anyone think the teams that start Tom Brady and Peyton Manning would've drafted quarterbacks with their second picks if players at that position had been No. 1 on their boards? The Patriots wisely took a cornerback to replace departed free agent Asante Samuel while the Colts chose a linebacker to succeed the waived Rob Morris.
That's why Bill Belichick and Bill Polian are master architects and Vinny Cerrato has yet to assemble a team that can even host a wild-card game (Charley Casserly built the 1999 Redskins).
Miami (Fla.) end Calais Campbell, an elite passrusher for new Redskins defensive line coach John Palermo in 2006, was still on the board at No. 47. So were the highly-regarded Chris Ellis of Virginia Tech and Quentin Groves of Auburn, both of whom might be switched to outside linebacker as Washington was when he was drafted by the Colts.
Perhaps the above trio can't be every-down ends like Daniels. And Kendall Langford and Bryan Smith, picked in the third round, are from less reliable small schools, but how about Purdue's Cliff Avril?
All the standout college outside linebackers except Keith Rivers and Jordon Dizon were also available at No. 47. Do the Redskins really believe that Dan Connor, Xavier Adibi, Geno Hayes or Shawn Crable couldn't help them more than Davis?
Yes, the Redskins needed bigger targets for Jason Campbell, but they had already drafted 6-2 Devin Thomas and were about to choose 6-4 Malcolm Kelly to complement vertically challenged starting receivers Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El. Taking an end or an outside backer instead of Davis in between Thomas and Kelly would have made so much more sense. As Dan Daly of The Washington Times wrote, no team had used its first three picks on pass-catchers since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
The Redskins then compounded their mistake by not choosing an end until seventh-rounder Rob Jackson, who had only two sacks (both in the same game) as a Kansas State senior, while not using any of their 10 picks on a linebacker.
Washington drafted a punter for the first time in 15 years but didn't deem a linebacker worth selecting even though Maryland's Erin Henderson, an all-ACC choice, and Georgia Tech's equally worthy Gary Guyton went undrafted?
Davis might have Pro Bowl ability, but with Cooley in front of him, we'll never find out until one of them departs as a free agent. That won't happen before 2012 and that's way too long to wait.

Greg, you're a Celtics fan, correct? I'm curious to know, how does the fan base view the team? Of course they're supportive, I mean they did win 65 games this year. But I would think because the team is cut and paste, maybe some fans wouldn't view them as "their own".
Posted by: Red | May 9, 2008 2:16 PM
As far as that Elfin article goes, lets see how this plays out on the field, before we come to conclusion.
Posted by: Greg | May 9, 2008 2:16 PM
You know I am tired of these people writing these columns on how we took luxury and didnt take a succesor to philip daniels. What if chris wilson is the replacement. the problem is not that we did not draft a defensive end the problem is that we did not give the media anyone to drool over or start a contreversy. that is the problem where football meets business. we might have football players that are ready but if the media does not fell like they can market those people then they rip you to shreds because they cant get a story out of it.
Posted by: Great One | May 9, 2008 2:20 PM

Red, its been so long since the Celtics were relevant, that just putting a winner on the floor this year, has caused the fan-base to rally around the guys they brought in. There was MUCH hand-wringing during the Atlanta series going on around here.
They've brought people back around with the first 2 games versus Cleveland however.
As far as viewing them as their own, it was easy with KG, because he immediately respected and had an appreciation for the history of the franchise. I also think that Pierce had been without a decent wing-man for so long that something like this had to be done.
My 2-cents anyway...
Posted by: Greg | May 9, 2008 2:32 PM
people stop associating Roy Williams with the redskins. Secondly it is amazing to me that we drafted a certain positions that we felt were more pertinent. if we drafted a DE then the reporters would complain about not having receivers and injury concerns. you cant build a football team through one draft. more importantly 97% of all sport writers never played football or any other sport in their life and they can tell you how to run your sport. some of these geeks get an asthma attack when they write to many paragraphs.

Bringing in Roy Williams to the Redskins would be disrespecting to Sean Taylor, in my view......
Posted by: 4th | May 9, 2008 2:36 PM
Here is my favorite part of the article:
"Miami (Fla.) end Calais Campbell, an elite passrusher for new Redskins defensive line coach John Palermo in 2006, was still on the board at No. 47."
The problem is that he was largely mediocrre during 2007, and that if his LINE-COACH didn't make a play for him, what does that say about this guy? Hmmmm you think Palermo might have had something to say about what kind of player he thought Campbell might be.

F the league
Posted by: Zebra | May 9, 2008 2:43 PM
How is it disrespectful to ST? If he wasn't a Cowboy would it still be disrespectful? I didn't like the fact that Williams wanted to wear ST's number in the pro bowl. There will never be another ST, but the redskins need to find someone to help at safety and I don't think doughty is the answer in the long term.

No to the hell on Roy Williams. I think he's a decent safety, but he's a liability in pass coverage. "Dirty Thirty" (Good one jm) can play FS or SS. I would like to see him stay at SS. I think he'll draw comparison to Sean Taylor, if he hasn't already, and thats unfair to both of them.

The only reason I can see the Redskins signing or trading for Roy Williams is for WR/TE injury prevention. Just to make sure none of our WR/TE are on the receiving end of one his mastery of the Horse Collar Tackle or if the Redskins feel that our defense is so great that in order to make things fair for other teams we actually play Roy Williams at safety.
