P-Ten's Take on Minicamp

With Jasno out, we thought we'd send a rookie of our own to minicamp...Here's the view through Paul "P-Ten" Tenorio's eyes:

So, Jim Zorn made it through his first minicamp as head coach of the Washington Redskins without getting punched in the face by any reporters, a positive in his opinion but not the only positive to take away from the three days of practice.
Zorn got to work implementing his version of the West Coast offense, and it's obvious it will be an offense that opens things up. Just watching the offense work, whether it was in shadow drills, 7 v. 7s or full team, you could see the differences in philosophy and sense that things will be more "aggressive." By that I mean, well, I'll steal from Antwaan Randle El here, the offense doesn't look like it will be as "handcuffed." At times, there were five receivers running routes -- something that hasn't been seen too often in Washington in recent years. Fred Smoot laughed when asked the last time he saw five receivers running out in front of him. "Hey, man, it's been a while. We didn't do that under Al [Saunders]. But you know, right now we got it going." Center Casey Rabach agreed: "I think we're definitely going to open some stuff up this year, obviously, and get some verticals down the field and hopefully make some big plays."
Zorn was around the quarterbacks for nearly the entire practice, working on different things from drop backs to throwing while rolling out in space, and, of course, the Madden-esque Pilates ball drill. There's no doubt he looks like a great teacher, and those around him have said as much, but it'll be interesting to see how he balances his time with the quarterbacks to take a look at the rest of the team. Zorn conceded that he didn't get a chance to see the linemen work other than when they were in contact drills with the rest of the team, and I'm not sure if he saw much of any of the other individual workouts. It was a minicamp, so this is the time for Zorn to work as much as he can with the QBs, no doubt. Still, how well he manages those duties with his head coaching responsibilities bears watching.
The defense has much less of a learning curve, "we basically just picking up where we left off," Smoot said. And you could see them flying around to the ball at times -- as evidenced with LaRon Landry "chasing down" Clinton Portis from behind on a screen play, or when he nearly crushed Santana Moss as he caught a pass coming across the middle from Jason Campbell. Landry looked very impressive, often nodding his head towards his coaches as if to say "I read that one all the way."
As was written in a notebook today, the thing to keep an eye on will be the defensive line and the health of the veterans. The decision not to draft a defensive end, like Phillip Merling or Calais Campbell, in the higher roundsl means the Redskins are gambling that Daniels, 35, will stay healthy. Daniels sounded confident that he was headed toward a good year (and yes, I know it's just May). He has jumped up nearly 20 pounds, he said it's the first offseason in a while in which he didn't have surgery, and he said he expected to bring enough of a push that he'd be facing lots of double teams. That all sounds well and good, and maybe he will have that type of year, but there is no disputing the fact that this line is getting old and the team will need to find some young players in the mold of Montgomery and Golston during camp. Players like Buzbee and the rookie Rob Jackson will certainly have the opportunity to prove themselves in camp and earn a roster spot.
Of course, the weekend ended with two polar opposite events. First, a fun 40-yard race between two of the most important pieces of the franchise, Portis and Landry, and I think Smoot summed up everyone's relief when he shouted while walking inside, "And we ain't got no pulled hamstring neither."
Then there was the Fred "Without a Trace" Davis drama. It's interesting; certainly, to hear the Redskins say the rookie overslept. While that may be the case, there are questions surrounding the episode. Why didn't his roommate -- whom Davis' brother spoke to -- wake him up? Why did it take so long to locate the kid if he was just oversleeping in his room? Did he request a single room? Obviously, there are probably some parts of the story that are being lost in this whole "he overslept" explanation.
Regardless, the point is: He missed his third day of work as a Washington Redskin. Not the best first impression to make, especially as a high second-round pick. The Redskins have to hope this is just one lapse in judgment, one mistake. And hey, it'll probably be something people look back on and laugh. But it's still something worth discussing and it's something worth keeping an eye on. And yes, I'm sure the rook will be taped to a goalpost as sort of a lesson from the veterans that, "If we have to wake up on time and get here, I don't care if you're on West Coast time, you better be here 20 minutes before me."
All in all, though, I think the Redskins got done what they wanted to get done with three days of practice in early May: They got an opportunity to get players on the field in front of a new coach and let him see exactly what he was working with. They got a chance to install parts of Zorn's West Coast offense. And, as if they didn't already know it, they were reminded that Landry and Portis are fast.
Zorn said the organized team activities, which begin today, will be less intense but are important as the team continues to install his offense. And come training camp, when things really start getting intense, there will be plenty to watch (in case you forgot, stuff like defensive line depth, offensive line depth, wide receiver development, Campbell's growth in the WC offense, punter competition, Zorn's ability to get a handle on everything, etc.).

Didn't Sean Taylor hinself change numbers once Smoot rolled out???????

And I am sure, Taylor had alot of #36s in circulation at the time.....

4th, ST changed his jersey after year one. It pointed to in the story thay after a certain number of years, if you have a number you are 'strongly encouraged' to keep it so it doesnt look like the nfl is trying to rachet up revenue on jersey sales.

Probably one other stupid thing in the CBA that is so weak.

P-Ten was just making a little joke! Nice nickname...thanks, Nate!

Also, I'll repost this from the other thread:

For those who missed it, Daniel Snyder announced Saturday night that his wife, Tanya, is battling breast cancer and has undergone treatment at the Mayo Clinic. This can be a tough crowd, but I know everyone "up here" wishes her a speedy return to health.

Jim Zorn is so zen.

Jim Zen...

--------------------

Zen made what I believe to be a revealing comment regarding Davis' "screw up."

He said something to the effect that Fred Davis is still a kid, and that kids do mess up, and as a rookie, how "mortified" Fred Davis must be feeling.

Got empathy?

Forgive the repost, but I'd like to emphasize how cool our new head coach is.

"Smoot summed up everyone's relief when he shouted while walking inside, "And we ain't got no pulled hamstring neither." "

Soo, Smoot is saying they all have oulled hamstrings? In May??

Wow that was refreshing!! Condolences to JLA and his family but it is nice reading something without the jabs at management.

I have a confession to make: Fred Davis is my room mate. Last night I crushed up some sleeping pills and put it in his drink. i turned his cell phone off and unplugged the alarm clock and telephone in his room to make sure he didnt wake up on time. Ok, now my conscience is clear.

I'm really sick of this constant negative tone. Really, this blog has just gone down the drain. All we hear is the constant negative conjectures made by this blogger, who clearly despises the Redskins. Hey JLC, why don't you just go back to Baltimore where you belong.

Oh wait, that wasn't JLC. Nevermind...

CP - He's from the WC and that's pretty much how they talk over there. He's their Head Coach, not their buddy. He prob is just trying to get on the reporter's good side so they won't investigate anything.

To me, he sounding like he is getting his 'Coach Speak' fine tuned. Like Paul said, if Davis just over slept, then why didn't his roomate just wake him up? There's more to the story, though it will never get out.

Actually "P-Ten" thought Madden from the get go...his first file from that day:

Paul Tenorio reports:

Here at the start of the afternoon practice, one of Zorn's quirky quarterback drills has made its first appearance. No, not the slip n' slide, this instead is similar to a drill in the Madden video game training camp mode.

A quarterback stands in the middle of a circle surrounded by the other QBs and Zorn, and must avoid the large, silver exercise balls thrown at him as if avoiding on-rushing would-be sackers. If it were Madden and I had to guess, I'd say rookie Bret Meyer got the highest score...but I can't be too sure.

LaRon Landry is a beast.

You think he's been spending some time in the weight room?

Holy Moly!

What are you talking about?? Where did that come from??

Here is the actual 1st posting from Paul and the 1st person to reference MAdden as well:

From Paul Tenorio:

Jim Zorn introduced one of his quirky quarterback drills during the second practice, working a drill in which a quarterback stands in the middle of a circle formed by other quarterbacks and avoids large pilates balls thrown at him.
"I just call it dodge ball and that is what we are doing," Zorn said. "We are trying to get the QB to actually move his feet. If we had a really tiny ball the QB's would just avoid with their upper body but with those bigger balls you have to actually move out of the way and sometimes that is what it feels like in the pocket. You are looking downfield but you feel something coming at you and you actually physically have to get out of the way."

JZ and JC (With Afternoon Update)

JReid send this note on the offense:

In another small step on offense, the Redskins began to install screen passes in the morning practice.
"When we put in another big group, you see things really working," Coach Jim Zorn said. "This was the first day we put in the screen, so that was very successful. The next time we run it, it may or may not work, because [the defense] ... they're going to adjust to what we're putting in as well.
"That's how offense and defense works. That's what makes football work. It's all about adjusting."

Who let the anon out?

Posted by: Chia Pet | May 5, 2008 1:43 PM

The Davis thing:
It seems like the public is being left out of this incident. This may be okay. I know if I'm working on a new job (with huge bucks involoved), I'm doing everything I can to impress my boss. Oversleeping and missing practice isn't good. Now if the veteran guys had something to do with this, then fine - maybe is was some rookie hazing or something. I can only hope Fred Davis is more responsible than simply oversleeping, as stated.

Zorn with QB's:
I'm fine with this, Zorn needs to know these guys inside and out. Anything he can do to help JC along is definately needed. This is JC's coming out year, maybe next year given the fact he has a whole new offense to learn and get in sync with all the other players. Zorn needs to know each QB's strength and weakness and make decisions on playing time and play calling in different situations. I like the fact he's spending a lot of time with the QB's. It is the most important position on the field and we've been weak at this spot of quite some time.

Portis/Landry Race.
I like this, shows team cohesiveness and lets them have some fun. If one would have gotten hurt, then I wouldn't like this, lol. A friend said today, if pro athletes can't run without pulling a muscle then they shouldn't be playing pro football, weed them out early. I'm taking the younger faster LL in future races, not to take anything away from Cp and his speed.

Good mini camp, but the Redskins have so much work ahead of them. Getting the chemistry right this season will be close to impossible. I'm hoping the veteran team can pull through in the end.

Posted by: Rando | May 5, 2008 1:44 PM

Did I read correctly that Philip Daniels has jumped up nearly 20 lbs.? As in his playing weight? Wow, that's a solid addition in a 4 month span. Maybe he'll be moved to DT and be our new interior pass-rusher that we were looking for.

20 lbs in 4 months. I don't think I could do that if I tried, let alone be able to do it while staying physically fit. That's damn impressive.

Posted by: psps23 | May 5, 2008 1:44 PM

I don't mind Zorn's soundbites because he's trying to not turn the episode into a controvery/story and put added pressure on Fred Davis. But really I Davis is running all day until he pukes and passes out. Anything less than stern, visible discipline will be a tremendous disappointment to yours truly. It's a long slippery slope once the inmates get empathy at the assylum. Zen don't win football games...

I frequently shout people down in a bullying tone to accuse other people of bullying someone.

I suspect that other bloggers understand this makes me a hypocrit, but I'm not self-aware enough to comprehend the true irony of the situation.

Sorry, where was I? Oh yeah..

Boo! ...blog elite... ...shouting down... ...get with the program... ...blah blah blah...

Who among us has not been drunk, or "not drunk," on a boat without a life vest?

Who?

more info on SleepGate:

From John Clayton:
"5. No ZZZs with Zorn

New Redskins coach Jim Zorn had the most entertaining minicamp. Jason Campbell seems to be responding to Zorn's unique coaching methods. Clinton Portis, in his best shape as a Redskin, almost beat safety LeRon Landry in a match race. Landry ran a 4.35 40 coming out of college, but Portis wanted to challenge him. Then there was second-round pick Fred Davis. He couldn't sleep Saturday night because his roommate wouldn't shut up. So he went to the desk of the hotel and asked for a different room. He slept until 11 a.m., and the team couldn't find him because he wasn't in the right room. Zorn wants his players alert -- but Fred, tell the roommate to shut up and don't forget the wakeup call."

I would love for all of you bust you butts for two days at your first NFL mini-camp and see how quick you are to get up on a Sunday.

Posted by: | May 5, 2008 2:04 PM

I guess that anyone going through basic training in the military uses the same excuse all the time. I mean two whole days of vicious exercise. :)

Or maybe he just overdid the relaxation-juice on Saturday night.

I don't think you hang the guy for this but you DO hold him accountable. He's in a job now, he's not at school any more.

Chia Pet,

Boats were already too expensive, and when the cost of fuel went up I had to sell my life vests to buy beer for the cooler.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 5, 2008 2:14 PM

Beep beep; JReid spoke with Vinny Cerrato about Fred Davis.

"I politely asked him why we needed to go to land to take more tests when I took every test. Then he sprayed me with mace, on his boat."

-Cedric Benson

Posted by: Chia Pet | May 5, 2008 2:17 PM

Hey t_e, maybe you could use the money from the life vests to upgrade the cooler and float in that instead?

So you could sell the boat and you could use the empty extra cans you could buy as some sort of auxiliary floatation devices - with some work of course.

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 2:18 PM

Has "P-Ten" every heard of a paragraph break?

Have you ever tried to sell a boat? It's easier to sell the empty beer cans or the life vests.

----------

Tell that Marquise Hill and his family.

Muscle doesn't float and life vests save lives (period)

If you spend much time being drunk on a boat without a life vest consider yourself luck to be alive.

Posted by: | May 5, 2008 2:23 PM

A good friend of mine said there's an old saying that the two best days of your life are when you buy a boat and when you sell it.

I guess you'd have those two reversed! :)

stupid stupid analogy, your point is totally moot.

It's kind of hard to oversleep when you share a barrack with 20+ guys and revelry is blasting in the early morning.

The guy changed rooms so he could get some sleep.

Again, what a completely idiotic thing to say.

Another High Horse, Soap bOx idiot.

Posted by: | May 5, 2008 2:31 PM

Do you actually understand what the word 'moot' means anon?

And I believe they sound 'reveille' in the morning, 'revelry' was presumably what was keeping Davis up in the first place.

From your continual use of the phrase 'high horse' I'd say you have some issues you need to deal with there, son.

There are no high-horses here, we're in the blogosphere now. Whisper it quietly but we're all actually equal here, so try not to project your prejudices onto everyone else if you can. It makes for much more interesting conversation rather than the trite banal 'you suck' stuff when everyone contributes.

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 2:38 PM

Redcoat,

There are a lot of good days in between when you pull the kids on tubes, knee boards, water skis, etc. And, of course, the "in between" period is extended by the difficulty of finding a willing buyer.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 5, 2008 2:42 PM

red coat,

I love how Red Coat spell checks from his high horse.

comparing oversleeping a mini-camp to someone oversleeping in boot camp?

Come on, you don't expect to be call out for that.

It was a stupid comment, you sound like Rosie O'Canfora!

Posted by: | May 5, 2008 2:51 PM

That's basically what my friend went on to say t_e.

He also said that the whole boat thing was a quote-unquote 'weeping sore' in his marriage from the day he bought it until the day he sold it at, of course, a huge loss!

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 2:51 PM

Maybe young Mr. Davis was at Room 871 in the Mayflower Hotel...

Posted by: Ashley Alexandra Dupre | May 5, 2008 2:53 PM

Damn! I should have bought the boat from your friend, not from the dealer. He sold it at a huge profit.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 5, 2008 2:54 PM

Congratulations anon, your IQ continues to decline in inverse proportion to your rising righteous indignation.

It's not being in need of a spell checker when you insert a completely different word in your sentences, it's malapropism, without the humo(u)r.

And your posts are so very humo(u)rless.

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 3:33 PM

I'm sure you would have enjoyed buying that boat t_e, you'd have had to travel to sydney to pick it up!

Would have been a fun sailing trip back though.

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 3:35 PM

"malapropism"? First time up on Redskins Insider. Redcoat continues to push the envelope with pearls before swine.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 5, 2008 3:39 PM

Sadly I guess I'm just continuing to confirm my position as an elitist. *sigh*

Hey t_e, it looks like we have our own mini-version of one of those treehouse thingies. Should we try to make this "boating and boating products" related while it lasts?

I must warn you I have precious little knowledge of the on-water recreational life, I didn't got bitten by the bug - particularly once I realised that I swim like a stone. But I can pun with the worst of them!

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 3:48 PM

rc--

I, personally am scared of boats. But we bought a home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. There are 21 barrier islands, and you can only reach three of them by car. If you have a boat your family can be the only people on an 8-mile long Atlantic beach. So, we took the plunge and I became semi-competent, although now I worry I lost my limited boating skills over the winter. Some of the life-long boaters down there enjoy watching me dock and are generous in offering advice on how I can do it better next time and with less damage to the boat.

Sort of like you explaining a malapropism. Only they don't point out that my iq declines each time I crash into the dock, even if that's what they're probably thinking.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 5, 2008 3:58 PM

Sounds like a good trade t_e, overcoming your fears (somewhat) for the promise of idyllic quality time with the family in return.

My experience of boating people is that they're a friendly lot, particularly if they realise that you're not 'competing' with them (who's the best sailor, has best boat, etc.) and as long as you can afford the repairs, just keep truckin' your own way!

Posted by: Redcoat | May 5, 2008 4:19 PM

RC,

Hard to say about boaters. Mine is a power boat, not a sailboat so the people are different, and the people on the Eastern Shore are just different than the people who live around DC. But they're eager to help. First time we were trying to trailer the boat they could see we didn't know what we were doing and they kind of pushed us aside and did it all for us. I tried to get their cel phone number so I could call them the next time I was trailering the boat.

And, while we're up here chatting off line, I just wanted to say thanks for the feedback that you gave me the other day. You're the faerie in Burns "Would some faerie the giftie gi'e us to see ourselves as others see us." Or, where I worked before I retired, they said "feedback is a gift."* Even when it doesn't come in pretty wrapping paper with bows on it.

*They said this because the people who gave feedback didn't really know how to do it, so they tried to brainwash us that getting peed on was a good thing.

Posted by: talent evaluator | May 5, 2008 4:38 PM

You have my enduring admiration if you steer a power boat around. If I got behind the wheel of one of those things I'm fairly sure that I'd just power-dive it straight into the closest rock/river bank/cliff! I find myself 'marginally competent' in these areas and prefer to leave it to others because of that. A man's got to know his limitations, as Clint once said.
As for your 'feedback', although it was what I felt I was very disappointed with the 'wrapping paper and bows' I put around it, hence my asking Cindy to remove. Stuff like that should have been handled off-line and preferably over many beers. Are you coming to DC for the june meet-up?

The one thing that disappoints me about the blog these days is that there are so many 'cranky' posts out there that I think it makes us all a little shorter with each other than we should, and I'm becoming one of the worst for that. I have to do better.

It sounds like you've worked for some of the same companies as I did/do! But if you got out I'm glad to hear that there is potentially light at the end of the tunnel - I have waaay too many years to go to be able to believe other!
