Virginia Beach

Most of you guys have probably heard the talk and read the reports from a while back about the Skins moving their training camp to Virginia Beach possibly as soon as the summer of 2009. There have been discussions between the team and civic leaders down there about making this work and the Skins are always looking to build and expand their brand, emphasizing the May "Beach Blitz" event in Virginia Beach. (Personally, I'd love to see it moved down there and have the wife and kids stay with me down there for a few weeks. I've wondered for years - since way before I started covering this team - why they didn't head down that way for camp).

Both sides want the deal to be economically feasible and have been in contact to that end. Spoke to some football people in the organization about the project recently to get their takes on the potential pros and cons. A big concern for now is the infrastructure at the sports complex down there. The fields are immaculate I am told, but the facilities are largely lacking, with size and amenities an issue (training rooms are not up to par; limited space for meeting rooms and film rooms.). People I spoke to recently believe from a football standpoint such a move would be at least two years away given all the work that would have to be done to get the sports complex equipped to handle 90 NFL players, all the coaches and trainers and other staff.

Some on the coaching staff would also worry about the issue of players racing up the highway to get back and forth from Virginia Beach on off days around home playoff games - then veterans racing against the clock to report back down to the training complex at the beach - and logistics about when to break camp, etc., would be imperative. The location is certainly appealing, but if the thing is going to be done right then a lot of work would need to be done ... and the issue of which entity funds that endeavor could end up looming large.

At the end of the day, however, the dollar may be king, and if the Skins get a fat financial deal from the good folks down there to move there in 2009, then it might just prove too good for Dan Snyder to pass up. If the Skins are to move there for camp a year from now people on the football side of the building hope that all of the necessary upgrades are made, and wonder if a year is sufficient time to do so.

Randoms: Speaking of fields, the Redskins are re-sodding the middle of their practice fields at Redskins Park ... again. They took a beating with all the weather lately and the pounding from mini camp. Some within the building believe that if they do build a practice bubble onto the side of the facility that the completion of such a project would be at least a year away, too ... Rookie tight end Fred Davis took a large degree of criticism for missing a mini camp practice a few weeks back, and rightfully so, but I have yet to talk to a player or coach who was not highly impressed by his performance during the two days of practice he did participate in ... Second-year safety LaRon Landry has not been around the facility much this off season, drew plenty of attention for his post-practice race with Clinton Portis a few weeks back and ended up skipping the Beach Blitz event after telling people within the organization that he would attend. Landry attained a fair degree of fame in his rookie season and while no one is freaking out about any of this, there are some within the building keeping their fingers crossed he maintains the same attitude he exhibited as a rookie ...

Gonna try to meet up with some of the blog faithful at Summers tonight for the replay of the Champions League, but given the kids being sick and all that has transpired in my family in recent weeks I'll be a game-time decision. Will be coming from Bethesda after doing Washington Post Live on Comcast - so please, my Comcast peeps, let's ban all talk of the Chelsea/Man U match in the green room and on the set, cool? Retaining suspense about tape delayed matches is pretty much impossible these days, but thankfully most of my close friends will be waiting for a replay as well, so I'm thinking no one will spoil it for me on my cell ... Last but not least, even if you hate my Sox you have to show Jon Lester the luv after his no hitter (caught most of it on NESN; was sitting right behind home plate with my wife-to-be at the time when Nomo threw his NoNo back at Camden Yards back in 2001). Amazing story. All of us have been struck by cancer in out families to one degree or another, and what this kid has overcome and accomplished is pretty awesome.

Spaghetti Gang making moves? Virginia Beach? Priority one has got to be whether it makes sense for the players. Will it help them develop better?

My guess ... no.

They still need to maintain facilities in DC area during the year. So its an extra cost from that perspective. Does it help players to be somewhere else during preseason -- away from their day to day lives? Maybe. Some people respond well to that. Others, not as much.

Will it increase interest in the Skins in Va Beach? Yes ... and that is the reason. More fans, more money for the owner. And oh yes ... isn't there a Six Flags down that way? I mean, can't you see the cross promotion stuff?

What did they do - freeze your keyboard so you couldn't type and send? Break your fingers? Threaten your friends and family?

The rules (?) around here are the same for everyone: type your comments in the box and hit return; maybe someone comments back, maybe not. If so - great! If not - get over it. Plenty of "regulars" make comments that don't get responses also. But I am willing to bet that if you say something that others consider interesting, you will get a response. Just don't take it personally, either way.

I figured out how to overcome the Fred Davis alarm clock problem.

Fred moves to Tokyo. If he wakes up on time, he flies east, over Europe to get to practice. But, if he wakes up late, he flies west and crosses the international date line, so he'll still be on time

At Summer's, make sure you don't look at any other tv showing the ESPN ticker. After waiting all day, I sat down to watch Arsenal in the final a couple years ago only to glance at another tv and see that they lost. Not happy!

Man I've heard that VA Beach rumor before, but it just seems crazy to me. I've had to do coaching courses down there the past few years in June and July for soccer (the other football). Do you have any idea how freaking hot it is in VA Beach in July?

Its freaking hot.

I know Ashburn isn't a cool breeze either that time of year, but seriously. Its HOT!

I live in Ashburn Virginia.

The Skins KILL in training camp attendance.

NOVA/DC/Maryland Skins fans are RABID and show up in hordes.

Why change that? It is one of the cooler aspects of training camp to see thousands of people show so much love for da Skins.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2008 1:46 PM

I'll say one thing... Interstate 64 was not friendly to Allen Iverson or Marcus Vick.

If I'm going to put the Skins training camp someplace new ... its not going to be to a party town!!

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 21, 2008 1:56 PM

Let me sum up my case: Pro athlethes, scantily clad women nearby, crazy college kids looking for a good time. Refreshments for all! Great for me, bad for Skins. I smell trouble!

Posted by: Prodigal Son | May 21, 2008 1:59 PM

My folks live in the 757 and I have to say that Redskins fanitude would be there for the move. Immediate results may not come (a lot of beltwayers have made training camp apart of their lives), but I think it will grow on the place. 757ers love sports. They're just living in a place that has identity issues that confuse the nation.

Tidewater
Hampton Roads
Norfolk
Virginia Beach
Chesapeake Bay Area

The cities need to pull together to get some national media advertising going. Agree on a name to call it and let the whole country know where you are. I bet the majority of people could get close to pointing out New York, Boston, DC, LA, Chicago, Miami, San Fransisco on a map. Where is Hampton Roads?

===Where is Hampton Roads?===

Near Tidewater.

jva and prodigal son, ditto here. Maybe Va Beach is a good place to raise more summer revenue, but nothing about it makes sense as a place for an NFL looking to prepare for an upcoming season ... boiling heat, beachgoing distraction, and I-95 btwn here and there. I say go back to Frostburg or some such in the mountains ... away from the heat, isolated from the distractions, and nothing but two lane byway btwn here and there. But then again, I'd rather having a winning season than increase my revenues by tapping into the summer vacationers' wallets.

I don't think Virginia Beach would be such a good idea. Personally, the team should probably pick a venue very similar to Carlisle (if not Carlisle, itself). If you think there were readily-available distractions for the players in the DC area (Ashburn), just wait until they're partying it up in Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

If someplace in Virginia is to be the new site for training camp, I'd vote for someplace in the southwestern part of the state (Roanoke, for instance).

Another possible option would be Williamsburg. There are tons of athletic facilities in the Williamsburg/James City County/York County area, and its far enough away from Virginia Beach to kill some of the distractions.

Posted by: Gus | May 21, 2008 2:10 PM

Maybe they could try the Jamestown thing... just rename the whole place Jamestown. Doesn't every American have to learn about Jamestown or was that just us poor sorry Virginians that had to suffer through that depressing, overglorified history lesson.

If the NFL were to have a Minor League I would want the skins team in VA Beach. Training camp there would make sense in that case. in the present context though it does not.

I love the idea of building a Domed practice field in Assburn.

The town crier argument sounds pretty appealing for Williamsburg. I would pay admission to the camp just to see that. How about back to Carlisle? I still remember my first camp I went to in Carlisle, great little community and not that many distractions.

"... 3. What will be the feel-good story of the NFL preseason?

Put me down for the doubleheader of Potomac-area positive vibes being generated by the league's two most energetic and enthusiastic new head coaches in Baltimore's John Harbaugh and Washington's Jim Zorn. Neither has ever even been a coordinator in the NFL, let alone a head coach, but we'll have to find out if that's a plus or minus on their behalf. Harbaugh has the tougher task, taking over a veteran-laden Ravens team that's pretty set in its ways, and trying to whip it into a more disciplined and cohesive bunch. ..."

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/don_banks/05/21/storylines/index.html

Factually, I have a recollection that Harbaugh was the special teams coordinator in Philly, but still, its always nice for someone to "feel good" about Coach Zorn.

Here is some real news I did not know:

http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/05/21/redskins-looking-to-hire-a-blogger/

Dan Steinberg of the D.C. Sports Bog reports that the Washington Redskins are looking to hire a blogger. This is good news for Redskins fans, for bloggers, for blog readers -- for everyone who likes football and likes going online to get information about football.

The reason it's good news isn't so much that the Redskins want to host a blog at Redskins.com -- there's nothing inherently good about blogs -- but that according to Steinberg, the team is committed to the idea of bringing in a writer who actually covers the team more or less the way an independent blogger would, not just to re-print press releases and talk about what a genius Jim Zorn is.

Steinberg's colleague Jason La Canfora reported that Steinberg himself was a candidate for the job, and although that ain't happening, the mere fact that the team is reaching out to someone with that kind of journalistic background is impressive. This is a smart move for the Redskins.

And can we talk about North Carolina pitching in to the cause? They're milking the "OBX" thing dry and all of that traffic goes right through I-64.

Maybe Daniel Snyder could pay for some more tunnel lanes. He could paint them Maroon and Black (or burgundy and gold) and put his marketing genius to work to turn a profit. He becomes the saint of the city and everyone names their 1st son Daniel and their golden retrievers Snyder.

Ummmm maybe I'm a retard but why are the skins playing home playoff games during mini camp? Playoffs?!?!

Posted by: Huh? | May 21, 2008 3:07 PM

I say no to the DH, nancy AL, a real man can throw the ball and hit it. But I also say rase the mound back to 15 inches.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 21, 2008 3:07 PM

Greg, I could never figure out why the NL refuses to adopt the DH rule. What, are you taking valuable swings away from Tom Glavine?

Must be a fantasy thing. But then again, Carlos Zambrano can hit also. Gotta love a pitcher who GETS his own RBI.

My favorite thing about that Pepsi commercial with the yawn play is watching Romo getting sacked trying to execute the Yawn Coast Offense.

While we are discussing sports rules.

Should the NFL do away with the coin toss for something more interesting? One thing I loved about the XFL was that race for the ball to get possession in the beginning of the game. I would say that or have two linemen sumo for it.

In other news, apparently the Miami Cowboys really ARE done with Jason Taylor:

... "I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTA's," Sparano said. "I know that Jason will not be at any minicamps. I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp. ..."

I wish Jason Taylor would go away now. I'm not mad at him for wanting to explore other options, since he is nearing the end anyway. But does it have to be a HUGE issue, or the top 5 topics in football everyday. I'm sure Dolphins fans would rather be concerned about UDFA's than "The Dancing Dolphin".

Red, JT is a first ballot guy. 117 sacks in a 10 year career. Yeah, he makes it in, first time. He was a game changer, and don't kid yourself, he's 245-250, if not less.

Posted by: Greg | May 21, 2008 3:32 PM

I think it's bad that I really begin to follow baseball recently (about 15 years ago). I'm used to seeing HR's quite often. They're saying that the game is changing, and the small ball tactics are coming back.

F the Rockies. Good group of young players, but F em'. Gimme 400 ft. bombs all day.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2008 3:32 PM

Taylor would be a good acquisition for most teams, but he just isn't the right fit here. Too bad. He'd replace Andre Carter who is playing well and in his prime. Just not enough of a step up to justify the costs involved.

Taylor is a temporary for a team that needs a top pass rusher. I could see the Gints making a play for him if Strahan doesn't return

Greg, on closer reflection, you're right ... other than Pacman Jones (who IS a valid threat as a PR/KR), the only other guy is Zach Thomas. They did draft well (Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins), but not that well ... mostly a replacement and an age-related need ... plus, half of their coaches moved to Miami. Never mind. Bring on the yawn play. [Maybe it was Philly that was giving me the yips, but that can't really be it either b/c former Pats never quite play as well outside of Boston.]

Hmmm, i didn't know Jason Taylor put up those sack totals in only 10 years.

Impressive.

If he's less than 250, and averages over 10 sacks/, then he must be strong like bull. Funny thing is he doesn't look it.

Okay, I'm aggressively lobbying for Chris Wilson this season.

Yes, I was over-reacting ... caffeine-inspired paranoia. For all intents and purposes (intensive purposes?), Taylor is done. He's just ready for one or two more seasons ... the guy to be picked up by some team in desperate need right before the start of the season, if not right after it starts ... like the role Randall Godfrey had for us this year (maybe even Kendall ... that that one was a win/win for everyone but the Jets). Solid, as necessary, but not any sort of solution that you want to have to bank on.

I don't think VaBeach is a good place for training camp. As mentioned (numerous times), its extremely hot and humid down there during July and August.

When DS decides to work towards winning a superbowl, rather than work towards making another buck, maybe this team trains at a remote location and really becomes a team.

Football isn't what is used to be.....

Posted by: Rando | May 21, 2008 3:47 PM

I wouldn't go so far as to say Taylor is done. He'll be an impact player wherever he winds up for 2-3 years. But the Skins have a guy who is a lot like Taylor, just not as good.

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 21, 2008 3:48 PM

The hill and the train at Minute Maid Park - (AKA - The Juice Box) are essential ingredients to the overall fan experience. How, I really don't know - it just does.

And BTW, if you look at the cargo in the train's car, they are giant oranges that have faded in the sun, and they look just like a large load of pumpkins.

It's a strange place to watch a ballgame.

Posted by: John D in Houston | May 21, 2008 3:52 PM

If Taylor were on the open market sure I would make a run. But he is not worth more then a 6th round pick now.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 21, 2008 3:53 PM

A train? Maybe. But I have liked the idea of no fences for a long time. Hard hit balls are more likely to become HRs than a long fly. And guys would have to run!!

The HR is so valuable in baseball that you get all these guys that can't move (Cecil Fielder, Mark McGuire) and who have only one talent and that is their swing.

The most exciting plays in baseball are defensive plays, not some fat guy trotting around for 360 feet.

Plus, I kinda like the idea of putting out a sheet on the ground and watching a baseball game from a hill 700 feet away. Just us tight wads who refuse to pay for a real seat

It's near Langley AFB. I used to be the base IO there a few wars back. They used to have a C-123 spray flight, which was used to spray for mosquitos. (Yeah, same dudes did the Agent Orange Thing in 'nam. But at the time, who knew?)

My point? LOTS of skeeters in that area. If they move camp, bring your Off! dudes.

Also, one of the benes of my gig is I flew with them a couple of times. (The C-123s, not the Mosquitoes.)

Disney doesn't have an E-ticket ride to compare with flying at 150 feet at 150 MPH. then slamming a wingover into a hammerhead turn to fly back the other way.

Two new NFL rules I'd suggest
1. If the defense gets called for a penalty during a play in the last 2 minutes, the clock is reset to the start of the play. Because sometimes 7 seconds is more valuable that 5 yards

2. If a player is running off the field and is almost at the sidelines when the play starts, he is the 12th man on the field. first violation each game gets a warning, not a penalty. The frigging Super Bowl result almost changed because a Giant player was running off the field and Belichek won a challenge on it.

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 21, 2008 4:17 PM

I think a 17 game season could work. one more gamee is not going to throw off the balance of the NFL. it should be a win, win. the owners get more money and the players get another game check

I am for the 17 game season, with 16 AFC-NFC games on "Neutral" ground, put some games in LA, some games in London or wherever around the world. I would love to see an annual Skins Ravens Game in Annapolis or something, or Giants Jets at Yankee Stadium or Mets Stadium.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 21, 2008 4:28 PM

John D in houston, the players would rather play 1 more meaningful game then get hurt in preseason when they dont get their full checks.

Posted by: Great One | May 21, 2008 4:29 PM

FYI on the 17 game rule it does mean we lose a pre-season game. So they play the same number of games overall.

I got no problem with 17 game season. But I'm guessing the players will want more $$, so whats it really worth to the owners?

Also, only half the teams would get 9 home games, so half the teams would be "penalized".....
And the players get their yearly salary paid out in game checks; adding another game wouldn't give the players more money unless the NFLPA arbitrated it into the contact....

Posted by: dlhaze | May 21, 2008 4:31 PM

Because the Commissioner threw the idea of a 17th game out there, the owners are going to rally around it, if only to have something to back down from in the upcoming CBA renegotiations.

My only question is how to make it work, like how to do you figure out which team you play for the 17th game. The current 16 game schedule has some nice orderly rules to it, based on how you ranked in the division the preceding season. The six division games, home and away, are easy. The divisional matchups where every team in the division plays every team in two other divisions (splitting home and away) is also very tidy. That's another eight games. The final two games, also where which divisions play which divisions, are also pre-figure-out-able (based on where you finished within your division).

How do you figure the 17th game? The home-away part seems straightforward enough ... its 50/50 alternating years ... but WHO do they play?

That part of it ... and how 17 is a prime number ... are what I don't like about it.

Posted by: dcsween | May 21, 2008 4:33 PM

From my understanding of the 17 game strategy. its 8 home- 8 away and 1 neutral ground.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 21, 2008 4:34 PM

just gettin caught up - Dorf, wasn't C-Webb also pulled on 64 or was it 95?

Posted by: saywhatagain | May 21, 2008 4:35 PM

My suggestion for the NBA playoffs. Knockout games.

9 teams make it in each conference. Seed 'em 1-9.

First round has 6 play 9 and 7 play 8. One game, winner moves on. Losers are gone.

Round two has the two first round winners play the 4 and 5 seeds. One game. Losers are gone.

The winners from round 2 play each other. One game. That winner is the number 4 seed.

And then its goes to best of 7 for rest of the way.

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 21, 2008 4:36 PM

Sween,
I would like to see a yearly AFC-NFC rivalry game in the 17th game
Skins-Ravens, SF-Oak, KC-Stl, NYG-NYJ, Phi-Pit, Hou-Dal and so on. As I said its going to be their Neutral ground game so they can play games in LA, Toronto, Europe and Mexico as well as US cities that dont have teams, maybe Orlando will get one, Columbus

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 21, 2008 4:38 PM

Indy and Chicago at South Bend.
Detroit and Buffalo in Toronto
SD and AZ in Vegas.
Denver vs Seattle, in Salt Lake or somewhere in the NW.
TB-Miami in Orlando

There can be others as well but those are off the top of my head for natural rivalries that could form.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 21, 2008 4:43 PM

I'm thinking the natural rivalries for the NFC East are

Skins and Raiders
Dallas and New England
Giants and Colts
Eagles and Steelers

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 21, 2008 4:46 PM

Skins and Raiders (which owner sucks more?)
Dallas and New England (which QB has knocked up a hotter woman?)
Giants and Colts (Manning vs Manning)
Eagles and Steelers (who wins PA?)

Posted by: AL, Zeke, etc | May 21, 2008 4:49 PM

Rather than the Ravens or Raiders, seems like the Skins latest natural rivals have been Tampa Bay (and, to a lesser extent, only because it didn't turn out so well for the Skins, Seattle).

Posted by: dcsween | May 21, 2008 4:49 PM

Skins Raiders? Well its an easy win. Odds are the NFL will have it be more along the lines that the No 1.AFC plays the No 1. NFC and go down the list through all 16 rankings. I do love the idea of playing in more cities rather than expansion to 33 teams, give LA 5-8 games against random teams for MNF or something.

The basis for my Dallas paranoia just came back to me ... its about who they HAVEN'T yet signed plus their cap space that worries me, esp. that Jerrah was supposably in the big receiver sweepstakes going after Chad Johnson too. Plus, reading that now Boldin is officially wanting out of Arizona worries me ... and that Jason Taylor still lurks out there. In addition to his coach poaching, Parcells just swiped a couple of actual players for the Fins. At some point, Jerrah is going to say "comma dude, you owe me, at least karmically."

I had them in my first group, allong with Dallas vs Houston (I would have that in Longhorn stadium). If they do 17 games I would like to see them played regularly in the same spots between the two cities for those teams but expect to see.

2 in North America (Canada/Mexico)
1 in Australia or South America
10 in a random group of US cities with a bunch in LA.

I just saw your post, sween, sorry. The current NFL structure is a thing of symmetrical beauty.

32 teams in the league
16 teams in a conference
4 divisions in a conference
4 teams in a division

AND 16 games in a regular season.

That doesn't even touch the symmetry in the playoffs. This (and the mere existance of NFL playoffs) one of the reasons I prefer pros to college ball. I know that makes me sound souless to I-A football diehards, but I think computers determining who plays in a "championship game" is pretty souless, too.

1. The wide range of the talent level of the teams makes college uneven and lopsided most games

2. At least there is no pretense in Pro FB, dudes get paid. The college game is so corrupt its taints the experience

3. The polling, the computers, the rankings, no playoffs. Well that is al very lame.

4. College FB is often exploitive on many levels.

5. Saturdays its hard to justify taking both weekend days away from the family

6. Bowl Games are lame

7. The option offense is way lame

8. F tradition

9. Pro game actually has smaller stadiums!

10. Just cuz!

But I do still love college FB...

Dude, you are right on. YOU know, at least, that's it's about the sizzle, not the steak.

But you don't go far enough. I say let's penalize the dullards in football.

Don't celebrate after a meaningless sack? That's 15 yards and a suspension.

Failure to spike the ball imaginatively after a TD? Forfeit.

Guys like Riggins screwed up a great game by just handing the ball to the ref after a TD, instead of dancing.

Think how many years this could add to Jason Taylor's football career.

Heck, teams could even have designated dance squads--dressed in unis. They'd come out after a score and do a highly choreographed routine.

Or perhaps, allow the defense to counter-dance with THEIR dance squad, and if they are impressive, eliminate the score for the other team.

Why you could have people text message their votes.

I think Deion could return to the game.

This is what Football needs!

No more "No Fun League!" Whooooo-Hoooooo! Par-TAY!

Here's another genius idea. Make it 12 people per team and ONE of them must be a topless female Go-Go dancer.

More flash. More trash. Hey, Trash talking contests at halftime!

You know I love the jibba jabba up here, and I really love the football, but how did the beat reporter become the "story"? I'm not sure he realizes it (because he stopped reading below the thread long ago). I am more worried about Laron Landry. The last thing we need is our best DB acting like an azz...

Posted by: sicwidit | May 21, 2008 8:02 PM

sicwidit, agreed. I'd like to hear about what's going on with Landry as well. I know that St. Joe was big into the character thing, so I'm not real worried, but it does seem a little off that he's not hanging with the team. Has he even been in town at ALL this spring?

Posted by: dcsween | May 21, 2008 8:08 PM

Does anybody really think that NFL teams would surrender 1/2 a home game a year to a 'neutral site' where they have to give a cut to someone else and the stadiums are likely smaller? Yes, they are losing a preseason game in this scenario but remember how the economics work for a typical franchise: TV pays the players, gate pays the operating costs, and concession is the profit (yes, the Redskins among others have done better but this is basically the norm). So giving up home concessions even at an underattended preseason game seems crazy. This is just a PR ploy by the owners in the 'we care about the fans' vein. Starting shot in a 3 year PR war that is just starting.

I like the idea for the Bullseye between the sticks. Instead of the kicker wins a million, a fan wins a million and if the opposing teams kicker hits the bullseye later, that fan loses the Million.... That would be a great homefield advantage... fans going nuts on the P.A.T.

Posted by: CLEGG | May 21, 2008 8:41 PM

sicwidit, you know I had the same thought when I was reading down through the last few comments. I remember worrying about Sean when he didn't return St. Joe's phone calls or during the whole retaliation thing in Miami, but he turned out well. I miss knowing he'll step out on the field for us.

My other thought is, if LL IS acting up, I wonder if his good behavior last year had anything to do with him respecting Sean, maybe even being a little afraid of him?

Posted by: Curzon417 | May 21, 2008 9:29 PM

It seems kinda dead in here. I've been at class all week; I'm taking summer classes obviously. Considering Zornskins' comment, I doubt we'll end up with 17 games in the regular season. It is all about making money in this league even though spending is slightly regulated. The way Gene Upshaw is acting is disgusting to me because he's saying he won't give in to something that's in the best interest of the players, but you guys all know my reasons for that. What's happened with LL? I've been out of the loop on that one.

Posted by: Karen | May 21, 2008 10:11 PM

Hi Karen. We're talking about this bit that was in Jasno's post:

"Second-year safety LaRon Landry has not been around the facility much this off season, drew plenty of attention for his post-practice race with Clinton Portis a few weeks back and ended up skipping the Beach Blitz event after telling people within the organization that he would attend. Landry attained a fair degree of fame in his rookie season and while no one is freaking out about any of this, there are some within the building keeping their fingers crossed he maintains the same attitude he exhibited as a rookie ..."

Posted by: redskirt | May 21, 2008 10:18 PM

Why do people think Jason Campbell is dumb?

Posted by: sicwidit | May 21, 2008 8:10 PM

-----------------

People think JC is dumb because he breathes through his mouth and makes ill advised decisions on the football field which demoralize the team and sends the team into a funky firk of a joinky jerk of a funk from which they finally emerge in the nick of time with four games left to play in the regular season with a 37 year old career backup who breathes through his nose under center, playing the role of savior and making Joe Gibbs look very dumb in the process.

Posted by: Chia Pet | May 21, 2008 10:19 PM

LL looked like the most pissed off guy on the sideline during the playoff loss in Seattle after making 2 picks. I wouldn't worry about him showing up Sundays.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2008 10:31 PM

JC got a bad rap starting with his Wunderlich (14 I think - pretty bad - Brock Berlin and Jim Sorgi territory). Like many others he did much better the 2nd time. But I think with all the confusing offenses he has been trying to learn, for some unfortunate reason the 'Jason is not so smart' thread has lived on. I wouldn't distinguish the guy either way - not some sort of genius but not clueless either. I would say he from a smarts standpoint he is better at absorbing stuff then making quick decisions, I am not sure which is better but I think on the field decisions are more key.

Dan Marino had a 14 by the way. And Sage Rosenfelds had like a 32 or something.

Posted by: zornskins | May 21, 2008 10:42 PM

Does the team know where he is? He got drafted from LSU if I'm thinking correctly. So do they have anything similar to the Miami spring training thing where all the Miami players go there frequently instead of going to non-mandatory OTA's? If the team hasn't had any contact with him, unless he's in a coma, they ought to fine him for every day he stays silent and doesn't communicate with the coaching staff. This will send a message so there's no crap as to where the players are in the offseason. If you're not going to be at OTA's you should at least have complete communication with your team so you can be prepared when training camp starts. IMO. Have a good night everyone.

Posted by: Karen | May 21, 2008 10:46 PM

I worried about Laron Landry...I hope Blache rips him a new one...

I know some of this stuff ain't mandatory, but damn... You ain't Sean T.

Posted by: sicwidit | May 21, 2008 10:54 PM

I am really routing for JC...I think we need to take the Pampers off that dude though. He has to show real leadership this year. No more..."he's young", "he's got the tools"...he has to produce. For me he doesn't have to win a Super Bowl, but he has to hit his weapons. Personally, I think that Tampa loss was on him. That was a horrible INT at the end. In the Green Bay game...Santana Moss should have turned in his game check.

Posted by: sicwidit | May 21, 2008 10:59 PM

Counter argument to Zornskins. Just for arguments sake.

Does anybody really think that NFL teams would surrender 1/2 a home game a year to a 'neutral site' where they have to give a cut to someone else and the stadiums are likely smaller?

There are roughly 50 Stadiums in the US that are bigger than the smallest NFL stadium *Chicago now but used to be Indy, and 8 bigger then FedEx. Teams would be sacrificing 1 pre-season games worth of profits which is not nearly 1/2 a home game. Most pre-season games don't fill the stadium anyway, I would argue that the profits the teams would "lose" would be less than that and would be balanced out by a 17th game, likely in prime time.

There are ton's of other spots that teams get profits from that your missing here, and as I stated above teams would be able to get more money from the increased value in advertising a real game over a pre-season game. The value of advertising based on the value of the game in prime time and it matters so more viewers= more advertising dollars. Playing in larger stadiums could mean more concession revenue to be divided among the teams, not to mention games overseas is good marketing and brand expansion, with more sales for shirts and stuff like that. However this is pure speculation on both our parts, I am sure the NFL will do a cost benefit analysis before they make any decision, if they have not already.

This is just a PR ploy by the owners in the 'we care about the fans' vein. Starting shot in a 3 year PR war that is just starting.

This is something Goodell brought up the day he took charge, along with playing a super-bowl out of the US, so I don't think thats the case, I think the King of the NFL dreams of the NFL brand going global. The idea came from Goodell not the owners.
Thing is the owners are not going to stand by forever, with one team getting shorted a game in the 8 game schedule like they have been the last few years.

Plus I like even numbers.

Last year the luckiest QB was Romo. How many snaps went over his head, with one hitting him in the face mask, yet the ball seemed to bounce back to him or the girls. JC is compared to Romo alot and needs to step up this year. If he does not show he has "IT" we need to bite the bullet and move on. The problem is who will be his replacement?

Instead of developing someone over the last few years we chose to go with two "older" guys that do not have many years left. So what does that leave the Skins??

Even if there is a super QB in next years draft, 1)are we able to draft him based on where we will pick and 2)can that person come in a play in year one??

We may be giving up a 1st rd pick in order to trade for someone (Anderson or Quinn) to come in and play for us. JC needs to step up and be the QB we thought he was/is or we could be three steps back from where we could have been by keeping one of our former QBs that was here during the Spurrier years.

The opt out is neither a PR ploy nor an attempt to get games played overseas. This is about leverage and getting what the owners were not able to get in the rush to extend the last CBA.

This is about Bonus $$$ and discipline. Based on the ruling made on Vick's bonus money, the owners need to be able to recoup bonus money due to breach of contract similar to Vick's situation. And for some reason the hair length is an issue for the owners and they are not able to discipline players for the way they wear there hair.

Especially during Marshall Goodell's regime of tougher penalties to repeat offenders, the owners need to be able to get bonuses money for players who pull either a "pac-man" or "vick" on them.

IMO they can live with players getting 60% of revenues, but want to protect themselves from the two situations I mentioned above.

Brady Quinn won't compare to Campbell. I'm hoping my boy Stafford doesn't go pro next year, but if he does Skins might wanna jump on that real quick. Zorn could make him something special and he'd have been coached under great QB coaches Mark Richt and Mike Bobo and then under Zorn.

Hizzle,
A interesting choice. A fan favorite for sure.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 22, 2008 9:00 AM

Some good points Alex. But I think it will come down to in the end that the players who run NFLPA (read: starters) will demand to get paid more for a 17th game, where they actually have to play, instead of current system where they run 2 series and then head to the bench.

Also as Kurzon said clarity on contractual obligations as boring as that sounds may be at the heart of the owners' beef here. If they can pay 60% but not have to pay Michael VIck like players I think that would probably fly. Not so sure about the hair though

Personally I think international SB as Alex suggests is more likely than 17 game season.

I still like even numbers though.

This is a tough one, 35332... I would think spending one's entire career in the crimson and lemon adds heft to the case for any Mr. Redskin nomination. Cooley is a leading candidate, to be sure. No argument there.

But I'm going to look past the recent injury problems and pick Jon Jansen, for his warrior characteristics, his longevity, the likelihood he spends his entire career in our uniform, and for being an O lineman.

I think the Chris Samuels argument is a good one. Yes, he never SEEMS to get hurt (though at the beginning of last season he spent most of training camp rehabbing from an injury...was it a knee injury? I can't remember now).

But come the regular season, he was ready to play. My vote goes to Samuels.

Karen and sicwidit, OTAs don't start till June. Anything until that point is voluntary ... meaning non-mandatory ... meaning no adverse consequences without a change to the CBA ... which I hear is opening up soon anyway. Also, Springs has been away too ... and does so this time every year.

Everybody deals with grief differently. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Landry has a lot on his mind after what can safely be labeled a "brilliant" rookie season ... that happened to include the loss of the player with whom he worked most closely. Remember that Sean Taylor was not well-served by the departure of Ryan Clark.

Posted by: Alex35332 | May 22, 2008 10:05 AM

Alex, I was thinking about Cornelius, but I'm worried that putting him up there might be a jinx that results in him getting cut for salary reasons. Also, Fletcher would be a good choice, but he's only been here one year.

Posted by: dcsween | May 22, 2008 10:09 AM

Oh, maybe a signature moment or period is important, some image the player's name instantly evokes... for me, Jansen will always be the guy who went to war for us with two broken thumbs, with those big clubs on both hands. Love that.

Defense... when we lost our best defensive player last season, and LaRon is only in his second year, and the other top dudes on that side of the ball seem like relatively new-to-the-team guys (Fletcher, Springs), and Darrell is so fresh in our memory, it's hard to hold any of them up as Mr. Redskin. Yet.
