Malcolm Kelly Leads Charity Trip to Liberia

Jason La Canfora -- on vacation, but still at least mildly plugged in -- passed this along for the blog. To quote Jasno, "This is pretty cool."

Press release text follows ...

REDSKINS' DRAFT PICK MALCOLM KELLY TO LEAD DELEGATION TO LIBERIA
Malcolm Kelly, former standout receiver at the University of Oklahoma and 2nd Round draft pick of the Washington Redskins, will lead a group of private citizens to the African Nation of Liberia, from July 5th through the 10th on behalf of the global charity, Mercy Ships. The "Vision Trip" is designed to shed light on the medical relief effort Mercy Ships is providing for the people of Liberia, as they continue to improve their health and well-being standards within the country.
During the weeklong trip, the group will visit with staff on the Mercy Ships' flagship, Africa Mercy, the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship, which is docked in the port city of Monrovia - the capitol of Liberia. The group will view surgeries in one of Africa Mercy's six state-of-the-art surgical suites, and tour parts of the country, now recovering from more than a decade of civil war. Malcolm will also meet with Liberian officials and hold an international press conference before leaving Liberia.
He will also spend a day working out with members of the 2008 Liberian Olympic Team. Malcolm has enlisted the help of his own personal trainer, world-renowned sports performance coach, Chip Smith and Competitive Edge Sports, based out of Atlanta, Georgia, to help train the Liberian athletes and generate support for sports in Liberia. The Liberian government is expecting several thousand spectators, coaches and athletes to attend the training session.
Mercy Ships is a global charity that has operated hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to the forgotten poor by mobilizing people and resources worldwide. A crew of both professional medical and non-medical volunteers serves all people without regard for race, gender, or religion. They are scheduled to perform more than 7000 medical procedures during their 2008 Field Service. After his involvement in college with the East Texas based charity, located only 25 miles from his hometown of Longview, Texas, Malcolm named Mercy Ships as his charity of choice soon after declaring himself eligible for the 2008 NFL Draft.
"I'm honored and humbled to play a small part in this effort to bring both hope and healing to the people of Liberia," said Kelly. "As I have come to know the history and spirit of the Liberian people through Mercy Ships, I feel a real connection to the country. I admire the way they are rebuilding their future and I want to do everything I can to help. My folks always taught me that giving is better than receiving...unless of course it is on the football field."

Bravo Malcolm Kelly.

To those of you that were/are paying attention (and from the looks of the vote count many of you are) Chief Zee managed to take out that moronic yardbird mascot from Pukedelphia and has moved on to some retarded mascot from Minnesota. Commanding lead so far but only about 400 votes at this time. Take a second and vote:

Good job MK..
I bet this won't get any national play since his name is not "pacman' jones..

Posted by: jo | June 24, 2008 4:51 PM

Well it would be newsworthy if it were Adam Jones, as I can't imagine he's permitted to leave the country.

Posted by: SMACK | June 24, 2008 4:57 PM

I just crawled through 500 yards of filth to post this.

Nice, good to hear stuff like this from a young cat, shows he's got his head on right.

Gotta go crawl back before the warden knows I'm gone.

somebody ship this dude greg a dvd of prison break so he can get out already

Posted by: Great One | June 24, 2008 5:04 PM

Very interesting. Well done! Couldn't agree with Greg more. Very nice to see a young man who is about to have a ton of money keep his head screwed on straight.

I would love to know more about Malcolm...hint, hint Jon and Cindy!

Excellent Malcolm! As a man who loves the country of his birth (Liberia) and loves his Redskins, I would like to commend this man for going to assist others and see another part of the world. Liberia was founded by free black Americans in 1847, and has seen some hard times in the past 28 years! With much more exposure from others the country can and will be built back up! To give is better than to receive, be Blessed Mr. Kelly!

Will Elfin try to go to the corner, or maybe run a corner-post? He's getting predictable... and the safety is just dropping back and waiting for the pass.

Good for MK. I just spent 5 hours with my controversial presidential candidate friend. And this is like of those things we talked about. Its not all about what our leaders do, its what individuals do that count for the most in the end.

Good for you, Malcolm. This should go a long way toward reversing the damage you did to your name in the time leading up to the draft...

By the way, I don't know if anyone caught it on NFLN last night, but the Top 10 series did a rundown on the Top 10 Super Bowl Performances. Our Skins had 3 entries!

#7: Timmy Smith's 200 yard game in Super Bowl XXII
#6: Riggo's 166 yards and game clinching TD in Super Bowl XVII

and of course,

#1: Doug Williams' 4 TD 2nd quarter in Super Bowl XXII.

Makes you proud to be a Skins fan, doesn't it?

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 25, 2008 5:55 AM

And, on a non-football note, leading up to the NBA draft, ESPN last night did a story on the top-10 NBA draft busts. Their pick for number one worst draft pick ever was a local boy -- Kwame Brown. Kind of makes you forget about Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, and Rod Gardner.

Posted by: talent evaluator | June 25, 2008 6:56 AM

Yeah TE, Kwame is probably the worst pick ever in ANY sport. But then again we did get Caron "Tough Juice" Butler for him, and Pau Gasol(the guy we should have taken first that year)showed he has a tendency to go MIA in big playoff games, so I think it's a happy ending overall.

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 25, 2008 7:24 AM

Great to hear a young man giving back.

Posted by: jm220 | June 25, 2008 7:25 AM

brownie,

I get your point, but I see it slightly differently. If Ernie Grunfield could get Caron for Kwame, imagine who he could have gotten for Elton Brand.

Elton is the one we should have taken (in a trade down) except that Michael Jordan -- as a UNC alumnus -- was too stupid to pick a Duke man.

Posted by: talent evaluator | June 25, 2008 7:42 AM

Good point, TE. That whole Jordan situation set the team back several years and gave Detroit a championship. But you're right, if the Wiz had Elton Brand in the middle with Arenas on the perimeter and Jamison at SF, it would have been the Wiz in the Finals against the Spurs last year (provided the entire starting lineup doesn't get hurt, of course).

The Truth notes that these "fans" don't even know about Malcom Kelly flipping out when some scouts came to watch him before the NFL Draft.

The Truth notes that Malcom Kelly yelled at the Oklahoma staff because the turf wasn't the type of turf he wanted and that he wasn't as fast as he had said he would be.

The Truth still says good job for this, but The Truth would be happy to do charitable things like this if he were on the verge of signing a mult-million dollar deal.

The Truth also notes that CMR (Coach Mark Richt) of THE University of Georgia Bulldogs returned from the Middle East a couple weeks ago where he met with our troops.

The Truth is mistaken.

The subject of Kelly's 'hissy fit' in OK was debated ad nauseum 'up here' in the period leading up to the draft, and it was not viewed favo(u)rably by the "fans".

Alex,

Name ganking is to me at least, the worst.

1. Perpetrating someones name. (See fake nate.)

2. Ganking someones name for mockery. (See fake The Truth)

3. Anon posts.

Pretending to be someone else in posts like fake nate is really lame. When you use the name but are obviously not the person that isn't as bad as trying to pass yourself off but still pretty bad.

Anons are just being cowardly either by not wanting to take abuse back or being a regular calling out another reg but not wanting to cause beef.

Greg, no money disclosed yet on Snee, but they ripped up the last year of his previous contract and gave him a 6-year one that pay him "as one of the top 5 at his position", so that means he must be up there with Hutch/Dock/Faneca.

Wow so anyway, back to NFL news there is a story up Romo or Eli.

So which would you choose. (I understand that we hate them both just talking skill wise.)

I think I go with Romo. (Yes I vomited a little in my mouth) but he's more fun to watch and I think a better leader, more dynamic.

Eli is just kinda meh to me. He's got a ring and I won't take that away from him but I'm just not nor will I ever be impressed.

Posted by: Skinz | June 25, 2008 10:24 AM

RC, thanks, not sure how I feel on this one. Is Snee that good? I mean, Dock doesn't deserve that kind of money, and I'm not sure at his advanced age, that Faneca does either. Hutch on the other hand, is deserving I think.

Not sure about Snee. RC, your thoughts?

"No one makes me bleed my own blood."

Nice! Not as classic as some of the comedies being discussed yesterday, but any comedy with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn is fine by me.

Posted by: Matt | June 25, 2008 10:34 AM

Not sure about Snee. RC, your thoughts?

Posted by: Greg | June 25, 2008 10:24 AM

Not sure Greg. From what I see he has three big factors on his side: 1. Age (only 26), 2. Durability (48 consecutive starts), 3. Ability (he's been a starter virtually since day 1).

The Gints fans seem to rate him very highly, and we all know how hyper-critical they are!! Plus this is obviously part of their trying to keep the younger elements of their team together.

Skinz, I really like the way Romo plays too, but he's got some big question marks that he has to answer this year or Lord Jerrah may lose patience. To me there's little difference between Romo's situation and Jason Campbell's in that this year is probably make or break for both of them.

You're right that Eli has been 'meh' since day one, but he looks like he grew up in that playoff/bowl run last year.

If that ring gives him confidence to play and truly makes him the leader of the team (Strahan leaving helps that too) then he may turn into a very good quarterback.

All this plus McNabb should make for some really great NFC East games for you guys.

Posted by: Mom | June 25, 2008 10:41 AM

I dunno Romo has been ok. Granted the botched FG and all but he still lacks alot of game experience.

On the other hand Eli got hot at the right time. I don't think he's been overly impressive save last year ( Not that that is not impressive in it's own right)

Plus Eli just reminds me of a Stoner or something. Had he been Eli Smith I don't believe he'd be playing QB for the Calgary Mustangs far less the NY Giants. You're darn right I'm jealous!!!!!

The Truth notes that the anonymous poster at 9:52, or whatever time it was, was definitely fake and incredibly lame.

The Truth also notes that he doesn't care how many people steal his name, everyone can sense when the real Truth posts.

The Truth doesn't care about Malcom Kelly doing charity work anymore.

Posted by: The Truth | June 25, 2008 11:41 AM

On offense I would like to see:

Campbell throw at least 23-27 passes per game.

Portis with 17-21 carries per game.

Betts with 12-16 carries per game.

All I ask of the receivers is to CATCH the ball and make something happen after the catch.

As far as the defense, i'll be content with anyone contributing to the internal bleeding of thier opponents.

in a non-lethal way.

Red,
Well I would like to see our D allow less than 5 first downs a game and have a 3+ turnovers.

'NOT' poster" at 9:59am. YOU are pathetic. Here's 5c, buy yourself a better life and try to learn another word to express your inadequacies other than "douche"...

Being a douche is still being a douche.

Posted by: Dik | June 25, 2008 11:37 AM

i ask what is wrong with using the term "douche". i didn't hear until i began reading this blog. where did it come from? who modernized it as a derogatory term?

to me its hilarious, but overuse could result in the lameness effect.

some of the douche references i've read so far:

doucheface
douchebag
douchetool
douchehead
douchebaggery (my personal fav)
douchation (very creative)

douche - 1. a jet or current of water, sometimes with a dissolved medicating or cleansing agent, applied to a body part, organ, or cavity for medicinal or hygienic purposes.

here endth the lesson.

Posted by: Skinz | June 25, 2008 12:00 PM

Alex, less than 5 first downs in 3rd down situations or total? I think you may be reffering to the formal.
Damn 5 total first downs per game will be a sure way to win the super bowl.

i'm defintely with you on the 3+ turnovers /game.

more ints/fumbles recovered on defense is something that was still lacking, although they did get better from the previous year.

Posted by: red | June 25, 2008 12:11 PM

Um, Dik, I think i'll wait to get home and take a look at your 12PM link.

it scares me.

Posted by: Red | June 25, 2008 12:13 PM

tryin' to kick knowledge, my suggestion was specific to that troll, who repeatedly turns up here and posts as if to parade their ignorance for all the world to see.

I have nothing against the word itself, and in fact I probably even resemble it's colloquial meaning on my worse days.

What I do find offensive is people who try to use it as bait for a dialogue that they are woefully equipped to have.

If you are the above troll, credit to you for trying to start a conversation. If you're not, welcome to the conversation anyway.

Posted by: Redcoat | June 25, 2008 12:20 PM

colloquial - 1, 2. Colloquial, conversational, informal refer to types of speech or to usages not on a formal level. Colloquial is often mistakenly used with a connotation of disapproval, as if it meant "vulgar" or "bad" or "incorrect" usage, whereas it is merely a familiar style used in speaking and writing. Conversational refers to a style used in the oral exchange of ideas, opinions, etc.: an easy conversational style. Informal means without formality, without strict attention to set forms, unceremonious: an informal manner of speaking; it describes the ordinary, everyday language of cultivated speakers.

Great One, The Rock has a very big hand... and you know what that means. It means, he can lay the smackdown on ya whenever he pleases.

Posted by: | June 25, 2008 1:27 PM

Agreed, but wouldn't it be interesting to see college teams play a team of college-age or college-attending players from say, the Dominican Republic? Puerto Rico even?

That would certainly legitimise the 'World' part of the World Series name, at least a little.

Otherwise it's really just the US Collegiate Invitational Championship trying to pump itself up a bit by implying something that it isn't, which I don't understand. Isn't being the US Collegiate Champion good enough?

Wow I go away for a while and the blog explodes. I don't like someone stealing my Rock impersonation. I bet it is the rock. This dude The Doof is basically just totally copying the Rocks act.

Or to put it "colloquial" ly this dude is a fraud. His entire act is just a carbon copy of a character on wrestling of all things and for that he isn't even worthy of my derision.

P.S. The 'dawgs are a subject of constant ridicule for their inability to win anything of substance. I used to work with a bunch of UGA grads at Turner in ATL and I used to love showing up on monday mornings.

You've been weighed, measured and found wanting.
