OTA Update
Jason La Canfora reports from Ashburn:
Defensive back Shawn Springs and LaRon Landry, who have not been participating in most of the team's offseason programs, are not present for the first of eight OTA sessions. Springs trains in Arizona, and did not take part in most of last year's offseason programs, while Landry, a second-year safety, has drawn some raised eyebrows around Redskins Park with his absence this spring.
Starting wide receiver Santana Moss, who spent the weekend at various birthday parties and charity events in his name, was excused from practice with the flu.
New defensive end Erasmus James has been working with trainers on an individual basis, but not taking part in team drills.
Safeties Vernon Fox and Kareem Moore, cornerback Carlos Rogers, wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, tight end Tyler Ecker and linebacker Rocky McIntosh are also dealing with injury issues and are either limited in participation or are not taking part in practice at all.

Come on Laron

Redskin Nation, please review my last comment on the previous blog. I'd love to hear your views on Vinny's off-season thus far.

Not much to report other than he has chosen to not participate in any of the team's "voluntary" offseason programs, following the precedent of Springs, ST, and S Moss in previous years.

I've had the "flu" before...
I'm not saying, I'm just saying...

Vinny's offseason has been interesting. I like the low key approach to FA, considering how cap room has been a huge problem for us. The signings like James and Schwiegert are good, but not difference makers.
The draft is unknown. I had mixed thoughts since we didn't address some of the positions where we are aging. But you rate a draft based on how many players make the club and make a difference.
The real Vinny offseason will be measured by the coaches. The Spaghetti Gang hired Zorn and redid the offense staff. If that works, they will deserve the credit. If its a bust, then they will deserve the blame.

I thought the rookies had to wait until they were signed now that they've already had the initial minicamp.
Posted by: skinswest | June 2, 2008 12:31 PM
Vinny,
Off Season is like when you talked about girls you never had in the locker room in HS. The Deadskins will be 3-13 at the end of 2008 and your job will be safe but your mouth full! Enjoy but remember Danny Boy doesnt like teeth!

What the f Laron. He's going to demand a huge contract and be out of here in a few years. Punk.

I hope when praising our FO yall remember that we were trying our damndest to get Chad Johnson by doing exactly what everyone always complains about. It would've been just another Redskins off season if we had gotten them.
I think our FO was forced to use this strategy this off season much moreso than them choosing to use this strategy.
Posted by: Hizzle | June 2, 2008 1:05 PM
Come on Laron, don't be that guy. Hes also skipped out on about 3 or 4 autograph signings. Sounds like a punk to me.

LaRon loves the game. I don't get it.
Posted by: stumped | June 2, 2008 1:13 PM
So far, I like the offseason they've had, with two big caveats: we'll have to see how Zorn works out as a head coach, and we won't really know how good a draft we had this year until sometime down the road. It's kind of a sad commentary on the FO's past performance when we can take comfort in the belief that at least they haven't done anything stupid (yet).

Laron - maybe he's taining at the U like Shockey and the rest of the U guys. Oh wait he went to lsU, maybe that's close enough.
Vinny has had some moments but to be fair one off season does ot a good GM make, unless you are Mike Shanahan. How many FA or draft busts has this guy had? How does he always get a genius pass?
Although it seems like he is quietly finding some pieces. Both James and Schweigert were former startes and could be noce depth on our team. We suddenly having a huge WR corps. LB seems like the next likely target, maybe OL. Antonio Pierce still makes no sense nor did Ryan Clark. But Derrick Dockery was way over-valued as a free agent.
Posted by: ssh1549 | June 2, 2008 1:14 PM
London Fletcher is a major upgrade at MLB over Pierce. Clark was serviceable with ST.

Laron=much ado over nothing. Yawn.
Schweigert/James=Good to great moves. If they pan out, good for the Redskins, and it costs them a 7th round pick. If they don't pan out, they get cut, and it costs the redskins zippo.
These are "voluntary" people...

Interesting strategy to use in regards to compensatory picks:
WHY GIANTS WAITED TO SIGN WYNN
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 2, 2008, 11:54 a.m. EDT
The New York Giants and free-agent defensive end Renaldo Wynn had a visit three weeks ago, and they seemed like a good match: Giants coach Tom Coughlin previously coached Wynn in Jacksonville, Wynn is a big defensive end who will be a good replacement for the Giants' smaller, quicker starters on short-yardage downs, and another veteran defensive end will come in handy if Michael Strahan retires.
So why did they wait three weeks to close the deal?
Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger reports that the Giants wanted to wait as part of their strategy for obtaining more compensatory draft picks in 2009.
Although no one outside the league office seems to completely understand the formula the NFL uses in awarding compensatory draft picks, it is based on which free agents a team loses and which free agents a team signs -- except that free agents a team signs after June 1 don't count toward the formula.
So the 2009 compensatory draft picks the Giants receive will be determined by the league's complex formula that takes into account the production of the free agents the Giants have lost -- Gibril Wilson, William Joseph, Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor -- and the production of the free agents they signed - Danny Clark, Sammy Knight and David Carr.
If they had signed Wynn in May, Wynn would have been factored into the team's compensatory draft pick formula, but since they waited until June, he won't be.

I really LaRon gets his act together before it's too late. Maybe he's down at LSU training...that's what I'm going to hope for. I don't want to have to worry about him in the offseason like I did ST. C'mon Sean (RIP) get into his ear and let him know he needs to be here.

Why must there always be dramatics associated with my favorite players? I wish for us to read stories with headlines like: 'Everyone is at Redskins Park working really hard because they hate the cowboys so much'. Where are my headlines?
L2 is literally killing me. I have loved that dude since his freshman year at university and prayed to the football gods (Art Monk) that he would become a Redskin. This is what I get? I ordered a steak and they bring me an a$$ salad with no crutons.
LOVE the Shweigert signing tho. He'll def be an asset for us this year.
Lastly, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit thinking about how every Sunday, I'll have to hear/see stories about 'defending super bowl champions, new york giants and their quarterback eli manning'. Sickening.
Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | June 2, 2008 1:35 PM
even if they are voluntary, dudes like santana moss should be here. new offense and more time to work with JC. he hasn't had a big year since 2005 either.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 2, 2008 1:36 PM
Schweigert/James=Good to great moves. If they pan out, good for the Redskins, and it costs them a 7th round pick. If they don't pan out, they get cut, and it costs the redskins zippo.

I feel like picking a fight.
What exactly is the difference between these two moves and the move I suggested earlier in the offseason with DJ Hackett? Essentially the same salary as James, definitely has the talent, and much less severe injury problems. Why again was it smart of them to pass on Hackett (they only offered the vet minimum according to "sources"), but now it's smart to take a chance on James?

There were other people bidding on DJ hacket, there were no bidders as far as draft picks were concerned for James.
Posted by: Great One | June 2, 2008 1:45 PM
When I am hungover I def 'reefer' to it as the "FLU" - way to party like a rockstar Moss - now go practice so you can have a year like you did in '05!
BONG!

Posted by: Chia Pet | June 2, 2008 1:47 PM
psp, are you being serious? That horse is dead, the bones have been picked clean, and it is turning to dust, and you want to dredge that up again?? Good call.
Well for starters, what does it say about Hackett that Zorn, who saw him EVERY DAY with Seattle, didn't think that much of him?? If nothing else that should tell you that Zorn wasn't all that impressed with him.
The trade for James has ZERO downside to it. If he doesn't make the team, its null/void, so the Redskins lose NOTHING.
I'd rather take my chances with guys like Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly, and see what they can do, than DJ Hackett.
Posted by: Greg | June 2, 2008 1:51 PM
The Broncos just released Travis Henry.

On one hand, I think teams hold too many OTA's and wouldn't blame veteran players for skipping some. (ie Shawn Springs)
On the other hand, having a new coach on offense would warrant more veterans to show up and learn/practice with the team. Defense is iffy, but new coach is new coach.
I think football has become more involved during the offseason, not sure I like that.
Rookies are not allowed at the OTA's unless signed, from my understandings.

Says the team he signed with, the panters, and i believe that he got almost 1 million guranteed and we were offering nothing guranteed except vet minimum
Posted by: Great One | June 2, 2008 2:11 PM
Yeah, I know these are voluntary, but Landry better be a beast this season.
Posted by: sicwidit | June 2, 2008 2:18 PM
James right now is a position of need. Of course we didnt know we were going to get the players we got via the draft but right now James is a good gamble. Even if James pans out we will only lose a 7th rounder. The guys who sometimes do not even make the team.......We gave up a draft pick for James because players that are on the waiver wire go to the team with the worst record first. Since there were other teams interested we traded. IMO, no big deal.......
Nothing to see here people, move it along, move it along.
