Post-Practice Notes

LaRon Landry says he missed Monday's OTA session due to a family issue but plans to be around here. Coach Jim Zorn didn't make a big deal out of his absence and Landry was back with the first-team defense in practice.

Zorn said thus far he has been unable to reach corner Shawn Springs, who has not reported for this session of OTAs. Springs has been working out in Arizona and has told associates that his plan was to show up for the start of training camp but not voluntary workouts.

Santana Moss was as up front as can be about his "flu" that caused him to miss Monday's session. His "sickness" was indeed a product of a weekend of birthday celebrating he said, but his teammates haven't given him a hard time about it because it was to be expected

"All they did is laugh because they knew it was going to happen like that," Moss said. "I told them you think you're still young and you can still hold up, but they all know what time it was. Have to chalk it up and be ready the next day."

Zorn still has a big arm. The former Seattle star QB unleashed some throws at the end of practice, failing to connect with Moss on one attempt, trying to pick on corner Fred Smoot, who has a tendency to trash talk just a lil bit in case you were somehow late to that party. "Smoot was the guy that I wanted," Zorn said. "We've got a little competition going and he's got me 1-0 right now."

I do like the fact that he's a player-coach. Who's the last one of those we've had? Did Marty play?

Posted by: Dik | June 3, 2008 1:27 PM

When Zorn was here in Seattle, he would regularly warm up the receivers and QBs with throws. Once an NFL QB, always an NFL QB. He has some serious zip on the ball. It was my favorite thing to watch in the Seahawks pre-game, and I really hope he keeps doing it (at least for a little while) as the Big Guy.

Posted by: P Diddy | June 3, 2008 1:27 PM

Spurrier was the last player/Head Coach. He played for the 49ers and Bucs back in the 60s and 70s.

I like the fact that Zorn is "active" with the players. Friendly competitions with the DB's and stuff like that is building a cohesive unit.

whats the deal with the draft picks...are they practicing...i remember after the mini camp after the draft...they werent allowed to participate in teh otas that followed the mini camp...because...and i cant remember exactly...they were still in school taking class (or hadnt graduated yet) or was it because they hadnt actually signed contracts yet...

are they practicing in the OTAs now cause i woudl think theyd all be done with school now...and if its a contract thing...isnt it in the best interest of the skins to get these guys signed...not to mention the best interest of the players to get as much work as possible?

whats the skinny on that? i need a refresher...

Well, becomming a bit of a fogey myself, I don't see all this relaxed bs working out either - but forcing the issues only worked us into the 2nd round of the playoffs tops with this generation of ballerz.

I guess we'll see, huh?

Posted by: Dik | June 3, 2008 3:14 PM

All this talk of Zorn as player-coach made me wonder when the last player-coach arrangement existed. I think that Jimmy Spencer was given a title of cornerbacks coach at Denver in 2003. Before that I think that the last legit player-coach was Dan Reeves in Denver in the 1971 season when he was running back and some kind of assistant coach too. It was more common in say the 1940s but I gave up looking.

The NFL prohibits you from getting paid any extra $ for coaching, so nowadays it would be more of an honorary position. Other sports prohibit this as well - mainly to prevent circumventing the salary cap.

The last real major sport player-coach as head coach was probably Pete Rose with the Reds - but I may be missing a few examples. Any NFL history experts out there know the last player-head coach?

Posted by: zornskins | June 3, 2008 3:16 PM

35332, imagine the thrill of Zorn pulling off his NFL-issued windbreaker and having a gleaming Skins uni on, then trotting onto the field to lead our boys to battle.

Oh wait, that wouldn't be thrilling, it would mean something had gone horribly awry with every available QB.

Would be a fun stunt for preseason, though.

I just think he could get away with, lets say a gold jersey different from the regular players maybe with a C rather then a number. to me any former player pacing the sidelines has the right to wear a jersey.

Posted by: 35332 | June 3, 2008 3:24 PM

Well, some folks like to call the wildcard round something different... but it's the playoffs so they can just sip on a big 'ol cup of 'Shut the Fkuk up'... It's the first round of the playoffs...

George Halas 1920-29 Chicago Bears
Fritz Pollard 1921 Akron Pros
Jim Thorpe 1923 Oorang Indians
Guy Chamberlin was the player coach of several teams.
Paddy Driscoll 1921-22 Chicago Bears
Ernie Nevers 1929-30 Chicago Bears
Earl (Dutch) Clark 1937-38 Detroit Lions

Also, you can go to the following site to see a few that were assistant coach's, including Jimmy Spencer and Dan Reeves.

There aren't any numbered rounds. They are as follows:

Wild Card Round
Divisional Round
Championship Round
Super Bowl

I assume it is like that because the top 2 seeds in each division don't play in the wild card, so that wouldn't be their 1st round and the divisional round couldn't be the 2nd round because that would be the top 2 teams 1st round........

Posted by: 4th | June 3, 2008 3:37 PM

Ok question. While obviously Zorn is no Spurrier they do have similiar backgrounds being QB's and laid back. Does anyone see another train wreck coaching job from Zorn or do we think he's a different breed?
Also, who would you rather do, Tootie or Joe from the Facts of Life?

Posted by: BB | June 3, 2008 3:40 PM

Moss probably gave up on the route like he did in that heartless playoff performance against Seattle. Nice job showing up hungover for work yesterday Moss. That just shows his level of dedication. I can't wait until Thomas, Kelly, Mix, Toler and McMullen have passed him in the depth chart because they actually care, don't give up on plays, and can stay healthy.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 3, 2008 3:41 PM

Wild Card Round - 1st round
Divisional Round - 2nd round
Championship Round - 3rd round
Super Bowl - 4th round

The top teams get a 1st round bye.

It isn't that complicated.

Posted by: Jim Justice | June 3, 2008 3:42 PM

BB, I will save my decision for a few games in or the first player meltdown. My first thought is I like the new approach to a point, I don't care if moss or any offending player is not getting ripped appart in public but as long as Zorn lets them know what's what when the door closes I am cool with that. I mean, the no public spectical thing is from the holmgren tree isn't it. Though for some *cough* reid *cough* it blows up in their face when they get a TO or drug adict son

Fred Davis slept through manditory practice. Not so good.

Portis and Landry had a match race, injuring Portis. Didn't tell coach.

Moss blew off practice hungover. Lied to his coaches.

Landry blew off first practice for "family issues," didn't bother to tell his coaches he wouldn't show.

Springs blew off OTAs. Didn't tell anyone anything. Unreachable.

PDX,

I know that. But to me its a joke to call any team a champion unless there is a championship game, not to mention. The Cowboys are considered the devision champs but were stomped by NY in the playoffs how is that right? Same thing happened to the skins 3 years ago. We were not division champs but were the last NFC-E team standing in the playoffs.

I also would say that about the NCAA's PAC 10 "champions".

Hopefully, you just mean nothing beats the Stanley Cup playoffs in early June. I mean, it's not bad for a filler while nothing else is going on, but I can think of many sporting events that carry much more interest factor (including every week of the NFL season).

Posted by: Anonymous | June 3, 2008 4:25 PM

Eh, 35332, winning the division in the regular season does matter, mostly because it gets you a home playoff game. It means that over 16 regular season games you did better than the other three teams. I do think that counts for something.

What happens in the playoffs doesn't change the regular season record.

Sounds like what you take issue with is calling a team the "division champion" or whatever. I agree that a term like that is silly.

If tying up a game in the final minute with the championship on the line ... followed by 50 minutes of sudden death overtime with guys flying all over the place, goalies making crazy saves, big hits and some very very near misses ... if that can't get your blood going ... maybe sports isn't your thing (whoever you are :)

Every time an OT hockey game ends, its always seems incredibly sudden. In football, you may see a drive and then the team will set up for a FG. Even when Santana made that catch vs Jax a couple years back, he was running for several seconds before he scored.

But in hockey, its about .2 seconds from action to over. So quick

Springs's absence drew strong comments from Phillip Daniels on Tuesday.

"As a veteran, I would expect him to be here," Daniels said. "We need him to be a leader of that [cornerbacks] group back there. He's the oldest, so you have to show that leadership. The young guys in the secondary, they need that.

"There might be a reason he's not here--I'm not sure. But at the same time, if there's no reason...It's my 13th year and I'm here. Be here. Be a leader. That's how it is."

Nate - wasn't the main reason for Springs absence last year related to his father? Or, was that the year before?

Posted by: Chris | June 3, 2008 4:58 PM

Corkczar,

GET OVER IT! Your comments are a little premature. It is obvious that Zorn is not Shottenheimer. Nor do we want him to be, because then we would never win a playoff game.

Stop trying to connect events that are likely unrelated. We are less then two months into the offseason.

Posted by: 72 | June 3, 2008 5:00 PM

I think Nate that maybe Daniels is suggesting there is a difference between Springs missing OTAs in Gibbs' year 4 (and year 4 under GG) and missing OTAs in Zorn's year 1 (and year 1 - sorta - under Blache).

your team does need everyone to 'bond' again within the new management and coaching construct. I would just put it differently. "What harm could it possibly do for Springs to be here for OTAs"?

Posted by: Redcoat | June 3, 2008 5:01 PM

The thing is , last year was Gibbs' 4th season this is Zorn's first. I think that a leader steps up and puts the team first. Let the young guys know that there is important work to do to make this a successful transition.

Springs was hung out to dry by Skins mgmt ... wanting him to take a big paycut despite his quality play. Springs refused to back down and was a bit like Jason Taylor is now. HIs team didn't want to keep him and his trade value was small due to age, injury history and contract. So Springs stayed away from the offseason stuff. I think it left some hard feelings.

But Springs did show up ready for last season and clearly earned his pay as one of the Skins top players. If he plays anywhere close to 2007 level, Zorn will not have a problem with him

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | June 3, 2008 5:04 PM

I also think having Daniels call you out makes the point nicely

Posted by: Pat | June 3, 2008 5:05 PM

All valid AL, Zeke, and all nothing to do with Zorn. I'm just surprised that with a new guy running the show, Springs would feel there is no benefit in spending time with the guy or in spending time with his team-mates either. As Daniels said "being a leader".

Springs took a chance. They asked him to take a pay cut. He refused and said he wasn't coming until after June 1st so he can work out and be in top shape just in case he was cut.

This will be the 5th year they are under this defense, so missing a few practices in May won't hurt him.......

ZORN is a fun guy. He probably would have encouraged it. Which is cool. Point is, he was kept out of the loop, and an injury occured. Individually, no biggie. But as part of a pattern--it worries me.

I dunno, could be Blache and Buges are kicking patootie. Zorn wisely asked Clinton to be a team leader on offense and Daniels stepped up on defense as a leader.

But in case you haven't noticed this team has been "lost" by coaches in the recent past. Hate to see it happen again.

Posted by: corkczar | June 3, 2008 5:54 PM

Springs should be there. OTA's aren't just for getting/staying in shape. Get to know the system better, know your teammates better etc. He can "train" all he wants in AZ, but aside from staying in good shape, it does not help him in the least. Technically we have a new DC, so he should be there getting to know any tweaks to the system.

As far as Facts of Life:
Jo for a while, but once Tootie blossomed it was all over. Kind of like comparing apples to oranges, or in this case, apples to cantalopes. Big cantalopes.

Posted by: dlhaze | June 3, 2008 6:01 PM

I don't think the Skins ever asked Springs to take a pay cut. They simply wanted him to convert salary into a guaranteed signing bonus that would free up space under the cap for other purposes -- like signing FAs or extending key player contracts. A lot of Skins players take that deal every year. I assume he was selfish and wanted the prestige of saying he made 7+ million last year.

Springs is an excellent player and he's worth the money, but I agree with Daniels that he should display better leadership for the new coaches and players. It's unprofessional that he's the only Skins player not at the OTAs this year. And it sets a bad example for the rookies.

Maybe he's scared that Zorn will throw to his side during practice...

skins actually wanted him to take a 2 million pay cut. no up front cash, converted signing bonus, etc, simply wanted him to cut his base salary last season by 2 million.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 3, 2008 6:15 PM

If Daniels is calling him out then that says a lot. It's a good sign if the players have to do it and not the coach (sometimes). Riggins thinks Moss should be cut, and questions Zorn's disciplinary style. I think it's a bit premature to say he's too laid back. I don't think Zorn was brought in to be a whipcracker. I think he was brought in to win football games.

Posted by: sicwidit | June 3, 2008 6:21 PM

John "loosen up Sandy baby" Riggins thinks Moss should be cut!! John "I'm going to Kansas with my mohawk" Riggins thinks Moss should be cut!!!!

I guess John lost a few memory cells along the way

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | June 3, 2008 6:26 PM

Riggins is old school, the game and players have changed since his day. Doesn't Springs work out with McNabb in AZ? He manages to get to his OTA's. I don't think it is a big deal he is not here but why be the only one. He could help Smoot to teach these young guys like Tryon and Westbrook how to be better players. It is after all about the team and winning games. His comment from last year about being paid 7M to be the nickel was fine with him after he didn't start the opener says a lot about him.

No there's some classified imagery.

kost, if you think Melbourne in June is something, you should visit San Francisco in December!

Like, say, this December. When the Redskins play there. They won't get much closer to you than that, any time soon. Just a thought...

Welcome back, mate.

This one is for our resident curmudgeon, Talent Evaluator:

A recent study points to an area of the brain previously unrecognized as the source of one's sense of sarcasm. Before now, doctors may have brushed off those who reported a loss of the ability to detect sarcasm: "The family will say the person has changed dramatically, but even neurologists will often just shrug them off as having a midlife crisis." But now we know it's a sign of dementia! Fortunately this is not the same part of the brain that makes you sarcastic, so as you get old you will think everyone around you is a twit while you get meaner and meaner.

Of course if you're a blogger, you won't notice the difference!

Hey-oh!

Last one:

Rob Walker, who writes the "Consumed" column in the New York Times Magazine every weekend (a sweet "job"), has a new book out in which he draws the sad--but unavoidable--conclusion that we are all a bunch of sheep blindly obeying a world of marketing messages.

PBR was more sure-footed: The brewer carefully cultivated its image among the indie crowd by taking great care not to cultivate its image: no ads on local radio, no celebrity endorsements (despite nibbles from Kid Rock) and certainly no TV. PBR's divisional marketing manager, cribbing tactics from Naomi Klein's anti-corporate manifesto, "No Logo" (full of "many good marketing ideas," he told Walker!), worked to make PBR "always look and act the underdog." He was so successful at retaining the brand's cachet (or anti-cachet) that one 28-year-old Oregonian whom Walker interviewed had a foot-square Pabst logo tattooed onto his back. "Pabst is part of my subculture," the kid told the writer, pointing to the absence of Pabst advertising as evidence that "they're not insulting you."

-gawker.com

------------

It stands to reason they would have found the guy with that tattoo in Oregon.

One of Nate's drinking buddies?

Personally, I could never understand the PBR phenomenon, other than it's good and cheap. I place I know sells imperial pints, that's 20 ounces, of PBR for $2 bucks.

I partially agree with Riggo. Moss needs to go but he can be traded. He is injury prone (or he doesn't know how to properly stretch his hamstring), he disappears for games at a time, he is not suited for this offense, he gave up in last year's playoff game in Seattle, and he just showed that partying for his birthday was more important than OTAs. He has had the entire off season to party.

The difference between Moss, and vets like Thrash and ARE is that they are dedicated and they know that they are expendable. Moss is under the impression that he is bulletproof.

The Zornskins don't need a cancer like him spreading his bad habits to the new crop of WRs that have potential, are suited for the West Coast offense, and are hungry.

Trade him to Miami for Jason Taylor and give a boost to the D-line in addition to ridding themselves of a potential problem.

All hail Dan Snyder.

First comes the fan message board. Then comes all of the radio stations. Next comes the WP and all of the local papers. And finally, in the year 2015, it will be illegal to publicly speak out against Napolean Snyder. If caught, you will be tried by Judge Larry Michael and sentenced to death.

Thanks for posting this! I miss a lot of this news since I'm up in PA. Having worked at WTEM, it would be DISASTEROUS for Sports Talk radio fans in the D.C. area if Snyder buys that station. Not only is FoxSports radio FAR superior to the ESPN programming, but it would be a daily exercise in brainwashing by Snyder. I heard Riggo's show before I left town, and I still can't believe the watered-down version of our beloved out-spoken former RB that's on the air! He used to speak out against Snyder and anything else he deemed wrong with the Redskins when he had a weekly show on WTEM, but now that he's getting Snyder money those days are long gone.

Clear Channel is going to do what's best for Clear Channel, but I sure hope they hold on to SportsTalk 980. I would sure hate for the "Voice of the Fans" to become the "Voice of the Redskins PR Department".

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 4, 2008 6:21 AM

Trade Moss, I think you're going a little too far. Santana Moss does not appear to be a cancer in this locker room.

I give him a pass for missing a day of OTAs after his birthday weekend; maybe I'm too forgiving. But I haven't seen anything from him that indicates he "is under the impression that he's bulletproof" as you suggest.

He's still our top wide receiver, just as Springs is still our top cornerback.

I'm not saying this makes either of them above reproach, just that before getting too outraged and suggesting this or that trade or punishment, we should consider the implications.

We're a better team with Moss and Springs on the field than without. That's my opinion. Just trying to take a longer view, beyond this June feather-ruffling and saber-rattling.

-Nate in the PDX

Posted by: Anonymous | June 4, 2008 7:49 AM

I agree Nate. Springs has proved he can workout on his on and come in good shape. Moss without question is the best WR we have right now. He miss one day. People really need to just breath.

brownwood, I have to agree that based on what I've heard secondhand up here, I'm glad I haven't been listening to Riggo radio the past couple of years.

I love the guy too much to bear the thought of him kowtowing to Snyder/toeing the company line... though I guess I've heard criticism pro and con, so who knows. Hard to tell, really, when listeners seem so polarized. Symptomatic of the times.

From the other paper:
The Washington Redskins have asked Carlos Rogers to be patient in his return from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. That, however, has not been easy for the injured cornerback, who stalked the sidelines in frustration yesterday because he couldn't participate in walkthroughs during organized team activities.

"It's hard because you know you can do things. You see how your leg's coming," said Rogers, who the medical staff says won't be ready for the start of the regular season. "I'm breaking and cutting in individual drills, so what's wrong with doing a walkthrough? I guess my knee's about 80 percent. I don't feel it cutting and breaking, doing all the [defensive back] drills ...

"They tell y'all that I won't be back until after the season starts, but the way my knee feels, I'm not going to miss no half a season. I'm on track to be out there for training camp. I know I'll be there first game. I'm not going to miss that."

The Redskins open the season against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants and receiver Plaxico Burress, who beat Rogers for the winning touchdown in Week 2 last season. Burress visited Redskin Park recently and bragged about how he planned to do the same this season.

My only question is why is Buress at Redskins Park?

Plax carries himself well. I can't imagine this being a pinnacle offseason catalyst for a Redskins Super Bowl run.
