Devin Thomas Agrees To Terms

Skins got him on a four year deal. The WR out of Michigan State was Washington's top pick in the draft, and first of three second-round picks. His signing leaves just second-round TE Fred Davis un-signed. Thomas will earn a max of $4.8 million in his deal, with $2.75 million as his signing bonus, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The team has been confident all along that it would get all picks signed before practice begins Sunday (players report Saturday). Davis and Thomas had been among a group of players already in town, working out daily at Redskins Park, and eager to report.

Talks with Davis were not as advanced as the Thomas negotiations at the start of the week, but ample time remains to complete a deal. I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't have a full slate of picks on the field by Sunday morning.

Sign Brett Favre and we're not "good to go" -- we're good as dead. What a mess that would create for this team, both short term and long term.

To make room for Thomas on the roster, the Redskins released fullback Pete Schmitt.

Second round picks are the value picks in the NFL. A lot of the players have first round ability and to get highest rated receiver and tight end for bonuses less than $3M each is a relative bargain.

Cowboys Romo has to shed playoff albatross

Ah, the playoffs. Superman had his kryptonite. Tony Romo has the playoffs. Did you know that during the three years that he started for Eastern Illinois, his team made it to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs three times? It did, and on each of the three occasions, Eastern Illinois lost ... in the first round. Add the two first-round playoff defeats that he's had as Cowboys quarterback, and we sense either a horrible trend or some cosmic coincidence. The man has never won a playoff game in his life. Am I the only one that seems concerned about that? Granted, Romo threw for 4,211 yards and 36 touchdowns last season, both franchise records in a record book where Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, Danny White and Don Meredith are mentioned prominently.

-- Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Campbell is better than Romo.

Greg,

NFL.com has a tracker for the first round deals but not for the second round. It shows only four first round picks have been signed:

Still gonna hold my breath so that at least ONE of Thomas/Kelly (2nd/2nd) is able to avoid the fate of Taylor Jacobs (2nd), Cliff Russell (3rd), Gardner, Rod (1st) and/or Darnarian McCants (5th? 6th?).

Posted by: mike | July 18, 2008 1:40 PM

Something tells me that the Skins who are least psyched about today's signing are Rock Cartwright and James Thrash:

"Thomas also established a [Big Ten] conference record in 2007 for kickoff return yards in a season with 1,135."

Posted by: dcsween | July 18, 2008 1:37 PM

Hey, what's wrong with Gardner? He had a respectable NFL career.....for a third rounder.

Schottenheimer took him one pick before the Jets chose Santana Moss. It wasn't the last straw, but it might have been the first.

And I think Cliff Russell cost us nothing. Washn't he taken with one of the picks that we got when we traded down, twice, and chose Patrick Ramsey? Ramsey and Spurrier -- what a match.

Chris Larry, a little pitchy, dawg.

Posted by: Randy Jackson | July 18, 2008 2:46 PM

I spent a little time on youtube watching greatest hits reels of Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly on College. I even brushed up on Davis a little.

My layman's view is that Kelly does better in the "althletic, over the middle, catch things that are behind me, rangy, possession type receiver" mold. Soupy should immediately get a better margin for error on his sometimes high throws to the sideline when he's in trouble from the rush. Thomas on the other hand seems to have sheer speed and some slippery moves and some vertical ability. A nice blend of downfield threat and red zone target ability. But not Antwaan Randle Elish, more a taller braod shouldered version of Santna Moss... speed with height and some strength to sheild DB's away from the ball. Bottom line....I am starting to take little sips of the cool-aid on this two WR thing.

Davis looks like he can rumble in the flat. Maybe not as nimble as Cooley, but something in between Chris and Sellars. Good hands, good body control. Hard to bring down, runs straight line with decent speed, but instead of running shoulder down overtop of a would be tackler, (Sellars style) might throw an evasive move in there and get another 10 or 15 yards.

If they stink it up later, (running bad routes or unable to adjust under the ball in the air like Santana, rookie mistakes etc. ) I can tell myself that I drank the Kool aid when it was hot outside.

Posted by: DTC | July 18, 2008 3:13 PM

Ben Wallace has the bell everytime he scores. I want an alarm clock sound everytime Davis gets a 1st down or TD.

Who's with me?

Posted by: NFeKPo | July 18, 2008 3:35 PM

Great news on D. Thomas. About Fred Davis, he made this mistake, what in May? He learned from it. It's all good! Go 'Skins! Let's do this 2008 football season thang! Peace.

Posted by: skins | July 18, 2008 4:01 PM

Trade Davis for draft picks next year...he is a major problem waiting to happen. And the Skins dont need him....they need lineman and DBs more!

Posted by: oddjob | July 18, 2008 7:42 PM

It's great we have Devin signed and ready to go because I feel we should have one of the deepest tandem of receivers in the NFL. And as for you idiots with all your sleeping Davis jokes, what are your 7 years old. He overslept 1 OTA practice in June, and your getting on him like he caught a DWI, DUI, or an assualt case or something. He wouldn't get on you for oversleeping your shift to McDonald's or the time your parents didn't wake you for your first day of work at WAWA, so lay off the guy. The Redskins are one of the handfull of teams in the NFL that do have good character in their players but you wanna beat one minor incident into the ground. It makes no sense. Grow the h*ll up and stop hating!!!

Posted by: E.O. | July 18, 2008 8:46 PM

Here we go again, hype up the Redskins, tell us how good they will be, then let us down by post-season. Same ole story!!!

Posted by: WHERESGIBBS | July 18, 2008 9:28 PM

you guys should really like devin thomas - watched him at msu all last year. previous msu coaching staff got fired for a reason - apparently not geniuses at putting the best talent on the field.

thomas used to be a running back, has good hands and can move, and he's strong as hell for a receiver. seems to have that (unteachable) knack for making plays. all season long it was obvious he was an nfl player among college kids. should be good :)
