Fred Davis Agrees to Terms - 4 Year Deal
The Skins have reached financial terms with TE Fred Davis (paperwork has not been signed as of 10:30, but should be shortly), their last remaining un-signed draft pick, and will have a full compliment of picks at the start of camp.
Davis agreed to a 4 year deal, with veteran minimum base salaries, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. He will get roughly $1.8 million in bonus money and the deal is worth $3.5 million overall. (My earlier guest-imates were pretty much on).
The Skins released long-injured TE Tyler Ecker, a 2007 draft pick, to make room for Davis on the 80-msn roster. Ecker underwent surgery on both sides of his groin in the spring after missing OTAs.
Jim Zorn is doing a presser at noon and then it all gets started at 8:30 Sunday morning.

Welcome back, Jasno! Man, we missed you something fierce. Or, as you might have put it, "Msn, wee mised yu sumthin firce."
1. With Jasno back, the Post has its full complement of beat reporters. You can tell he's back when you read of the 'Skins "full compliment of receivers." They go around telling each other how good they are?
2. Sween, The Turk, hits it right for the first time on the last signing. He called Tyler Ecker. He's one for ten which is one more than I would have gotten.
3. If they operated on both sides of Ecker's groin and he's still injured, that only leaves the center groin. Call in the moil, or worse, the Rabachciser. Ouch!
Posted by: talent evaluator | July 19, 2008 10:30 AM
You can tell he's back. Reading a fine article on Springs until the last paragraph when he has to put his little bias shot at the team. I still don't know how he's not a GM somewhere. All the knowledge he has.

Chris Larry,
My humblest apologies for that unwarranted verbal assault that you took. Although I was not that deranged individual that ranted for several hours, I did initially start the barrage early Thursday afternoon. I left on a business trip later that day and didn't get to a computer until today. After reading that, I was sickened. Glad to see that you're still posting.

Getting all their draft picks into camp on time, don't see that too often. Maybe we should just forgo the first round picks altogether, saving money and headaches.

I'm trying to figure out what you're talking about and I guess you object to this:
"With the Redskins facing questions of depth and health at cornerback, Springs remains a key figure. The team's anemic pass rush remains an issue, and the entire secondary likely will be heavily tested again in a system prone to pressure-filled man-to-man coverage. After weeks of uncertainly, Springs says he is ready."
Where is the bias in this? The Redskins had a good run defense last year -- 4th in the league -- but they gave up 214 passing yards per game, 16th in the league. They had 33 sacks last year, 18th in the league. And they had 14 interceptions, 27th in the league.
So, what in your judgement would constitute and "unbiased" description of the Redskins pass rush and their secondary?

Oh I don't know? Maybe that the players have gotten better, maybe there's a change in system that will allow a better pass rush, etc. Training camp hasn't even started yet and LaCan't write is already taken pot shots at a problem last year. They were middle of the pack in sacks last year but there's an anemic problem?

Not sure what you're talking about. I made 3 posts in reference to chris larry. The ones by Jim Mora, Denny Green and Lou Gehrig. All 3 were sports related. Just trying to infuse some humor into another boring blog day. I didn't forsee that it would take off the way it did. I admit that I thought it was funny at first, but then when the other poster(s) took it too far I was disappointed.

Look, I've seen plenty of bias in Jasno's blog posts, particularly in his animus towards Snyder and Cerrato. But on this one, with the Redskins 27th in the league in pass defense, I think he's right that there's "an issue" going into training camp. What we'll discover in the pre-season is whether your conjectures -- better players, better system, better pass rush -- are correct.

It appears my post has been lost by movable type or perhaps I used inappropriate language.
Stop the fighting. Skins have ALL 10 picks in camp with ALL having a great shot to make the roster, throw in the kid from Maryland - Crummey - is that his name and we may have to say good bye to eleven from last year - which won't be hard since we already did say good-bye to about that many free agents.
This is time to dream about a Super Bowl, when optism reigns and injuries don't exist. Anyone in Vegas put a Benjamin on my 'skins for me. I'll take care off you in 30 weeks when in pays 28-1!

Somebody put some money down!
Stop with 27th pass defense that is pure b.S. - league rank and interceptions are two separate things.
Here's the latest from Adam Schefter about the teams interested in #4. The blog should sigh with relief of believe none of it and fret until the opposite happens.
"»WASHINGTON REDSKINS -- Former Packers coach Vince Lombardi once finished his career in Washington; Favre will not do the same. Though teams are prohibited from commenting on specific players, the Redskins are committed to Jason Campbell, who recently went fishing on Favre's property. Campbell's backups are Todd Collins and rookie Colt Brennan. None is Favre. But the Redskins, once the home of all big names, have shied away from them this offseason. They have no intention of pursuing or trading for Favre, not with the quarterbacks on their roster."
Posted by: bangkokben | July 19, 2008 12:45 PM
If Cryboys are 5-6 odds to win the East, does that mean there is a 120% chance they will win the division?

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 19, 2008 12:55 PM
It just means the Cowgirls are heavily favored to win the division. For every 6 bucks you bet, you win 5. Linemakers are giving us no respect with basically Dallas at 1-1 and the Giants and Eagles at 3-1 with the Skins at 7-1. We are all biased on here but I see the division as way more wide open than that.

Posted by: bangkokben | July 19, 2008 12:45 PM
It's based on passing yards per game. And it can be misleading in the sense that because the Redskins run defense was so good (fourth in the league in yards per game) teams passed more.
If you want someone to make a bet for you in Vegas, try diddy. Seems like he's going there every three or four weeks. For a wedding, trade show, etc. Sure.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 19, 2008 1:04 PM
If you look at with "stars" in your eyes, with Dallas 13 pro bowl starters and a 13-3 record - winning the division by three games over the G-men. Then you lay lots of money on your team and get crapola back. Take the SB, 50-1 is a lot better than 7-1 and look at what the G-men accomplished, perhapa a more attainable goal is winning the SB than the division.
Posted by: bangkokben | July 19, 2008 1:09 PM
Betting even money or worse is never a good idea unless it is a virtual lock - say as the sun will rise tomorrow.
No way in hell is Dallas 13-3 again.

Dallas and 'Skins have similar schedules. Where we get the Saints, they get the Packers. Where we get the Lions, they get the Bucs. Otherwise, same. Both have .523 2008 strength of schedule. Seems to me like a fair fight, but I'd be happy with a winning record this year - new head coach, lots of new targets for JC, maybe it takes a year to settle in.

I'm sure by next year or the one after that we will have a winning season. going into the season with an untested qb and damaged ol we will be lucky to go 2-3 over 500.
I know it's unpopular but trade 2wr's a conditional set of 2's with a 1 for superbowl and take favre. i could care less about his back and forth he just loves the game. if he would sign a 2yr contract with an option for 3, what do we have to lose? we don't need a plethora of change we need a proven winner at qb jason isn't any more the answer than shuler, ferotte, well any we have had the skins would be brutal winners with favre. it's always a shot but this guy is consistent. i thought dallas would go after him because romo choko in the big ones, probably because favre hasn't been a felon of late

I'm sensing that, with the new season, there are lots of new posters up here. Welcome.
One of the ways to identify new posters is by their eagerness to point out Jasno's typos. They can spell; he can't; they're better than he is; etc.
We've all been there. Why do you think we call him Jasno? Why do we have a poster named "Cload and Daggar"?
All you newbies might want to take a look at "Megskin's Guide to Redskins Insider" on the wiki:
http://redskinsinsiders.wetpaint.com/page/Megskin%27s+Guide+to+RI
Sure, it's a bit dated and we hope Megskin will come back and update it, but her explanation of Jasno's spelling is still fresh:
Q: Why does Jason have so many typos? Can't he type? Doesn't he have an editor?
A: Who cares--it's a blog! Jason updates when he can, from wherever he can, sometimes while running through the WaPo hallways at a mad dash, driving his Volkswagen across midfield at Redskin Park trying to get to the afternoon Gibbs Presser, and sometimes on the train to NJ while quaffing Red Dog beer. Trains can be shaky you know, and Red Dog beer is a risky endeavor at best. But his main job is being a journalist and writing articles for the Washington Post. You know, those things that appear on the sports page that you get to read every day, and his editor is off doing those specials things editors do, like editing said articles. Anyway, once again, it's a blog, get over it.
We hope you'll stick around long enough to get over it. And, in the meantime, we hope you'll ignore it or, if you can't do that, then you'll roll with it, not rail against it because that's how things work up here.
Posted by: talent evaluator | July 19, 2008 4:35 PM
I'd like to blame his typing, sentence structure, and bizarre word choices on his use of a blackberry. However, since he was jonesing for one last fall, he has denied himself such an excuse.
My current belief is that the keyboard has it in for the man, and the Dauphine is primarily responsible for turning the semblance of gibberish that comes out of the brawls between LaToucanfora and the keyboard into the quality finished product that graces the Post.
Tell me she can't do that! She's the Dauphine, after all!
Posted by: cload & daggar | July 19, 2008 4:42 PM
The other theory, which is mine, and was thought up by me, Mrs. Anne Elk, is that Jasno got caught betting that the Ravens would definitely go over .500 under Billick, and Guido the Nose broke one finger a week until the debt was repaid. Thus, LaToucanfora has to type with his left thumb and right pinky, which, due to interest payments and a little known 'escalation clause' that Guido has in this type of contract, were ripped out and replaced in his left thumb socket. Together.

I think that the rredsskins should hire the guy Springs uses as his personal trainer as their strength and conditioning coach. He has done wonders with injury prone Springs. It seems we always have an inordinate amount of hamstrings, pulls, cramps and strains compared to other teams. Springs used to have all these and now, training away from the team he is in the condition of his life. We have had many players over the years never reach their potential because they were never in game shape by the time they got hurt. You have to be willing to work, but I don't have much faith in the guys we have. With all due respect this includes Bubba. he was great after an injury, but not much on preventing them. Not hating but I think this has to be one of the 2 or 3 most important positions on the team and you should have the best. Not sure if thats this guy or not, but he sure seems to have done a nice job with Springs.
Posted by: Daman | July 19, 2008 5:21 PM
I agree with the last post. i am always mad with these early season hammies. I am especially worried about guys with a rep for being lazy and not signing until the last day before camp opens. i hope that guy is ready. he has some people to get back on his side after the over sleeping on the first day on the job. Signing last is not good PR either. HAIL!
Posted by: Johny A | July 19, 2008 5:25 PM
i cqan't wait to see that new cornerback return kicks to the 50 every time. I think thats what he guarenteed right? if he can cover anyone for more than 10 yards it will be an improvement over the last CB we drafted, Mr Rodgers, and the guy that came back from the sex cruise in Minnesota, Mr Smoot.
Posted by: jackson | July 19, 2008 5:28 PM
I agree with you both. We are hurting at CB. All the more reason Springs better be good. Can you believe they were considering moving him to SS? And Davis does need to try a little harder to gain our trust. We already don't like him as we see him taking some catches away from Cooley. East or West coast there has never been a team with 2 TE with over 50 catches and Davis isn't known for blocking. Yeah he needs to be first in last out every day.
Posted by: Daman | July 19, 2008 5:32 PM
Just wanted to say I don't mean to sound negative. i am excited about the season and the potential splash we could make with a successful first 4 weeks in the division, but there are some glaring weaknesses and lack of depth everywhere on the defense except safety where there is a lack of talent after Landry. Rookie coach and old Offensive Line also. We are only really solid at Running Back and deep at Wide Receiver, new scheme for our QB to learn......again. It can be done, but it is looking like 2009 will be our year.
Posted by: Daman | July 19, 2008 5:37 PM
Lot of hate up here for Fred Davis. Guy was second best TE in the draft and the Redskins stole him. He signed without a holdout. His contract was difficult because of the incentives you can give a guy of his quality but who has no realistic prospect for starting. He plays for us, not against us and he will make Cooley even better.
His transgression? He missed practice. The coach settled it with him and it's time for the rest of us to move on and welcome him to our team. Who would you rather have -- him or Tyler Ecker?
Posted by: talent evaluator | July 19, 2008 6:05 PM
Have not posted in some time (excluding earlier today) and I have shown that I am a glass half full type of person. Sayin that, I think that we are fine at safety. IMO, RD will be fine as a strong safety. He is the type of player we need, someone who feels he has to prove himself all the time.
My only concern is at the CB positions. I think that Daniels will prove that our like is solid, especially using him inside on passing downs with Chris Wilson coming in to rush the passer.
Only injuries will slow us this year.
Posted by: Curzon417 | July 19, 2008 6:05 PM
TE agree with u on Davis. I remember oversleeping once in the marine corps. Never happened a seconded time. He is signed and is eager to prove that one mistake does not show who he is.

And the practice that Fred Davis missed was in bloody MINI CAMP. It wasn't the Tuesday practice before the Dallas game.
Jasno posted yesterday that Davis has been at Redskins Park, working out with the team. As far as hating him because he was "last to sign" I recall that Laron Landry and Sean Taylor were both the last to sign and they've been pretty good Redskins.

It's here!!
IT BEGINS, FINALLY
Posted by Mike Florio on July 19, 2008, 5:58 p.m. EDT
The offseason is officially over.
The Washington Redskins gathered on Saturday afternoon for a team meeting, and on Sunday morning they'll be the first NFL team to have a real, live training camp practice in 2008.
Coach Jim Zorn said on Saturday that morning practices will be "heavy," with players typically in full pads. The afternoon sessions will be less intense, and on some days veterans will practice only once per day.
"You will see some days will be a morning practice and a special teams practice in the afternoon," Zorn said. "There won't be anything else but special teams."
Still, the experience will be more intense than the camps under Joe Gibbs, with more contact.
"I think our lines -- they'll have physical contact every day," Zorn said. "Our running backs and our linebackers [will have contact]. Even our defensive backs and receivers have to learn how to block or shed blockers downfield.
"It's the live contact, where you're taking a guy to the ground and leaving your feet -- we have to watch that [to avoid injuries]."
Because of extensive offseason practices, which entail plenty of contact in T-shirts and shorts, training camp for most if not all teams generally isn't the same grueling, physical hardship that it has been in past years.
Still, it can turn serious. Seven years ago, Vikings tackle Korey Stringer died due to practice in intense summer heat.

Quit hating on Fred....
Rick Snider - who covers the Skins for the DCExaminer - wrote this week that Fred Davis will be the guy to watch in training camp. Snider said Fred was very impressive in OTAs. Snider is right up there with JLC in criticizing the Skins and rarely pays them a compliment and he was impressed with Fred.
In other news....Zorn said in his presser that he is not nervous...just excited and that he does not expect CP to play much in the preseason games....but that he would play.
Posted by: Lisa | July 19, 2008 6:59 PM
Thank god for that. I think portis should only have 3-5 carries a game in pre-season, and if he ain't supposed to get the ball I would keep him out for the most part.
Posted by: Alex35332 | July 19, 2008 7:55 PM
And someone needs to tell him to give up the TD in preseason. Save the tackling for the reg. season. Dude is a player!
Posted by: Curzon417 | July 19, 2008 8:00 PM
Curz. I think he knows.
Posted by: Alex35332 | July 19, 2008 8:29 PM
And Davis does need to try a little harder to gain our trust. We already don't like him as we see him taking some catches away from Cooley.
Posted by: Daman | July 19, 2008 5:32 PM
Daman, Do you understand football? It's a team sport. We win if we score the most points, not if Cooley makes the most catches.

I don't care if Todd Yoder leads us in receiving. As long as the W's pour in, it's all good.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 19, 2008 9:30 PM
I'm just wondering why no coverage of the Davis press conference? Whazzup with that?
He can be a narcoleptic as long as he catches some TD passes...

I'm so good at this I can catch 'em in my sleep.
