Portis in the P.M. Practice; Depth at LB (Updated)

It's no surprise that the Redskins have placed Phillip Daniels and Alex Buzbee on the injured reserve list and re-signed defensive end J.T. Mapu. ...

Clinton Portis, who turned an ankle in the brief morning practice, was back on the field in the afternoon. He went in -- and promptly was blown up (according to Jasno) by H.B. Blades, who knocked him off his feet with a clean hit. Portis popped right up. No harm, no foul.

Jason Taylor was on the field and participated in a few drills as he works into football shape. He just took a few reps.

Players not participating in the afternoon practice included Chris Samuels, Rocky McIntosh, Carlos Rogers, Erasmus James and Kareem Moore. London Fletcher, as noted this morning, is excused to be with his wife, who is giving birth to their second child.
...
Offensive line coach Joe Bugel said it will be a very physical session, with the team adding some plays they did not get to this morning. The weather is cooperating now - the rain was very brief, it turns out - so it should be fun to watch. To this point there has been very little to truly evaluate.

In the meantime, some ramblings on the situation at linebacker:

The Redskins obviously made a big move Sunday, acquiring DE Jason Taylor after a rash of weird injuries struck. It's hard to foresee another move of that magnitude any time soon, but if you asked me to pick a position where the Redskins could still seek the help of an experienced veteran, I'd say linebacker - easily.

Many in this building were stunned the team did not draft at least one - or add a veteran free agent to fill the role Randall Godfrey played as a reserve last season. Linebackers are generally the life-force of a special teams unit, and depth there is vital.

The Redskins have to be very careful with their three starters, however. Middle linebacker London Fletcher is willing and eager to do anything that's asked of him, but at 32, and given all his massive responsibilities within the defense, he must be used judiciously on special teams, if at all.

Weak side LB Rocky McIntosh is coming off another knee surgery, and even when the Redskins drafted him there were serious red flags because of the condition of his knees (some teams removed him from their boards).

Strong side LB Marcus Washington, like McIntosh, is a special teams beast, but he hasn't been fully healthy in years. He is very important to the overall defense and asking him to participate on too many special teams units is dicey.

There is good depth at middle linebacker - both HB Blades and Khary Campbell are special teams aces who know the defense and can fill in on defense for a short period. But even with their special teams ability, most teams would say the Skins need another LB, particularly with the starters likely limited in their special teams roles.

In the base defense, Campbell would be a spot guy to get you through a game, and with Blades's lack of size, there are serious concerns about whether he could play every down for an extended period. As we noted, the most significant injury concerns at LB are on the outside, but there is no proven commodity on the roster in a back-up capacity.

Guys like Matt Sinclair and Danny Verdun-Wheeler and Rian Wallace are battling for that spot for now, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Redskins scanning the waiver wire as other teams enter camp, and other linebackers are released over the next few weeks.

Sounds like Jason Taylor might be used as an LB from time to time and Andre Carter did play LB before. They may have more depth at LB than is apparent. A lot depends of Rocky's recovery.

There's no clever definition, though, just a rough "Jason Taylor and Andre Carter" written beneath it because the aforementioned pop-up kept making me hit the "enter" key after every. single. keystroke.

Why does every non-move the Skins make "stun" somebody, whether they are inside the organization or a rival exec? I can't believe all of these people are "stunned" and/or have their jaws on the floor. Does Jasno have to sensationalize everything?

As usual, I'm suffering from "Ebeepbeepulo Praecox"

Things that are making me lose by f-ing mind.

1. References to Fred Davis oversleeping. Stop it already.

IT COULD MOTIVATE HIM. HE HAS A REP AS LAZY

2. Posters acting like they are great GMs. If you're so damn great, go get a job in the front office.

SOME OF US CAN'T PLAY RACQUETBALL WORTH A DAMN

3. James Thrash as a punt returner. Forget it unless all punt returns are basically in a straight line.

AGREE.

4. Brett Favre as a Redskin. Until last year, everybody thought he was done. Maybe last year was like the last bit of strength shown by a dying man.

NOW WHO THINKS HE'S A GM?

5. Trying to figure out who is going to stick after two days of camp. Enough said.

FOOTBALL IS A SPORT. GUESSING LIKE THIS IS FUN. SHUT UP.

6. JLC's relationship with the Skins' front office. He may work for the Post, but his relatioship with the front office definitely impacts his ability to do his job. He needs to make peace.
There's more, but that's enough for today.

NOW YOU'RE ACTING LIKE A TEAM OWNER NOT JUST A GM.

jm220, I'm saying that special teams is what makes the difference btwn the top and bottom of the NFC East. Hence, my pre-draft rant about punter.

Also, on where to find special teamers ... the Arena League either just ended or is about to end for the season ... those guys are all special teams-ready ... and they should be in good shape ...

The Truth also says that should Kelly, Thomas, and Davis perform well, The Redskins would be very wise to take advantage of the trade value in ARE and/or Moss next off-season. The Truth says they are both getting older and less productive.

dcsween you just don't bring someone in for special teams. They have more than enough players capable of playing on special teams. To me this is a not story and a reach.

Posted by: jm220 | July 22, 2008 3:14 PM

I'd expect a pretty darn good LB for ARE.
(or I'd have to be sold that one of the young WR could really step up, which I'm not yet)

Posted by: Stumped | July 22, 2008 3:14 PM

What the Skins really need is topflight offensive and defensive coordinators, and a veteran QB who has great experience and success in the offensive coordinator's system.

Oh wait, we fired Gregg Williams and Al Saunders, and demoted Todd Collins. Thanks Snyder/Cerrato. At least we have a bunch of rookie gigantic WRs though.

Did you not sleep enough Jm220....he is saying that depth is already suspect at LB AND you cant risk the starters on Teams as you normally might....thus you need bodies there to both back up/spot start AND take the teams burdon off your very key starters...

special teams shoo-ins: K.Campbell, Blades, Cartwright, Thrash, Mix, and Sellers

guys who'll probably be there: Doughty, Kareem Moore, Chris Wilson, Lorenzo Alexander, Stuart Schweigert

That's 12 guys named that could easily be there, and along with other backups that I can't think of right now, I think we've got a pretty solid base. Not really worried about special teams right now.

Have to say this here, even though I haven't even read this blog post. After yesterday's whining about Vinnie "lying" to the local media about Tayler, and today's Wise article focusing on Tayler becoming an "ambassador" that can turn around an ailing franchise, I'm completely turned off by the Post right now. Cut the whinning, and cut the ridiculousness - Taylor is a 33 year old player. If he plays great, fantastic. If not, so be it. The franchise is hardly "ailing" - it's the number one money maker in pro sports. And the only thing that the fans ultimately care about is whether the team wins or looses, not whether a new addition has a sense of humor or a nice smile. Geez...talk about a letdown right at the start of camp!

Posted by: OffTopic | July 22, 2008 3:31 PM

Posted by: REP. Heath Shuler (D-NC) | July 22, 2008 3:35 PM

Careful congressmen, you should not be admitting you are getting high off anything, especially by its street name "blades", and especially not in print or on camera.

Posted by: Alex35332 | July 22, 2008 3:38 PM

jm, I'm with cL on this... the beat reporter is raising the flag that, at the moment, we appear to be shorthanded as far as LBs, and veteran LBs in particular. And that LB looks like the "shallowest" group on the team, now that Taylor has bolstered the D line.

One of the repercussions of being shorthanded on LBs is it looks like not such a good idea to use starting LBs on special teams, even when they're the best men for the job.

That's how I read it, anyway, using my special Pollyanna decoder ring...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 22, 2008 3:41 PM

Alex35332 - True. I didn't say that we shouldn't worry about special teams, I said that I'm not worried about our special teams - meaning I'm not worried about our current situation because we've already got most of the pieces in place.

How many players who have lacked size have gone on to have great careers in the NFL? Tired of this type of statement. Blades is a player and will be fine. LBF has not missed many (if any) games and has not let "lack of size" keep him from having a great career.

Posted by: Curzon417 | July 22, 2008 3:49 PM

The Truth is a fan of Verdun-Wheeler and always has been. With that said, The Truth admits that Verdun-Wheeler is really not much of an NFL LB.

The Truth will note, however, that he didn't expect Odell Thurman to be a very good NFL player, but Odel was pretty solid, which was proven by The Bengals giving him multiple chances.

The Truth says that the majority of defensive players who came through UGA recently had speed and pretty good overall athleticism, but The Truth has had trouble gauging who will be a good NFL player and who won't.

Reality check. The Skins do have depth issues in places, as does every other NFL team.

Reality check. The Skins roster is one of the best in football.

Reality check. The areas where the Skins are at risk are in key areas, namely: coach, QB, injuries in certain places.

By unit, when healthy
RB's are above avg for the league
WRs -- avg
QB -- avg
OL -- above avg
DL -- above avg
LB -- above avg
DB -- above avg

This team has character players and plenty of talent.

I'm with freakzilla on the punt return thing. I believe Thrash learned his technique from one of the masters of kick returning, that plucky little fellow who used to wear #30.

Maybe all those years watching Brian Mitchell go straight upfield and get ten yards every single time, if not more, screwed up my expectations. But I have a weakness for punt returns that actually gain the team yardage. ARE's eye-poppin' lateral movement does nothing for me, because it does so little for the team.

From the Sportsbog...Cooley on training camp:

The one cool thing about the first month of camp is living in a dorm room. I love it when I get to leave my 2.8 million dollar house and live in a 400 square foot box, trade in the Mercedes for the bus, and curl up in my twin bed. The TV's are great too, who isn't happy when they pick up 10 total channels on a 24 inch box? Yea, I guess now people can say what a ungrateful bastard I am and how much anyone would give to play pro football, but please, whether it's a high school or NFL training camp, it's still gonna be as fun as a [bleep bleep].

4th does not understand the English language as well as the truth, possibly. That's why the truth can act the way he does.

4th is a go getter and gets things done. The truth is not so he talks weird and plays 'gotcha' to claim victory.

...(deleted sentence).....

4th also notes the truth dosen't have as much common sense as 4th. If he did he would engage in civil back and forth conversation without claimng victory so early you would think the truth is actually GWB 43rd ('Mission Accomplished')........

4th also notes that while the truth may be better at english, well, that's about it.

Well, no sooner do I type those words than Jasno txts me to say that Portis went onto the field -- and promptly got lit up by H.B. Blades. Clean hit. He's fine. No harm, no foul. Top is refreshed with that info.

Posted by: Cindy | July 22, 2008 4:26 PM

I dunno, sween, I think 'Walk' merits a second viewing. Using your scale, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. The music is awesome, and John C. Reilly is awesome, and I laughed out loud a lot. Not bad, not bad at all.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 22, 2008 4:26 PM

Shouldn't you be off playing for the CFL or AF2 Rod?

Holy smokes, this joint is hoppin'! So happy the fubball is back!

Cindy's here!

NCICURN's here!

Gardner, Rod's here!

HAIL!

NCICURN--

Nice to see you back! It's been a long time. I've had so many medical questions about symptoms real and imagined and you always had a good insight. Also, you were helpful with football things.

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 22, 2008 4:28 PM

There you go Blades LB position solved and a little harder next time and CP can relax for a few weeks

Posted by: skinsfanWI | July 22, 2008 4:32 PM

Right now, I'm "dropping the kids off at the pool" while reading the insider via my laptop and wireless connection.

How sweet it is.

Posted by: | July 22, 2008 4:19 PM

Why don't you drop your laptop in the pool and get to know your kids a little better? Okay, I know the answer. I have two of my own. You've earned some quiet, daddy time. You've probably earned more than you get.

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 22, 2008 4:35 PM

Wow, you guys are cool! Bet none of you knew that the CFL and the AF2 are MUCH more competitive than your crappy "NFL". LOL

seriously

The Redskins are crap now without me. Redskins would MAYBE go .500 in the AF2 where the REAL MEN PLAY!

HAIL TO THE GARDNER!!

Posted by: Rod Gardner | July 22, 2008 4:35 PM

Welcome back, NCICURN. Where were you when I smashed my thumb in a car door??? I visited the Post nurse. She told me I was an idiot.

God. B'ben told me I am an f'ing idiot. I conceded the point, and now here's further proof.

Is there any more slang I should know so that I won't embarrass myself again? Is there a website where I can catch up with 2008? I'm about on 1993 right now.

Wait I know what to say:

I recommend getting a second opinion. I recall a poster from an earlier thread whose opinion would be that you are a "word typer" too.

Posted by: dcsween | July 22, 2008 4:47 PM

1) It was Derrick Gardner for the last time. Derrick is a guy that drives a car just like mine, lived at FedEx Field at the time, and also played for the Washington Redskins as a WR drafted out of Clemson at the same time as me.

2) I'm still a baller and you all suck.

I think he said that Jasno was the "word typer" and that Cindy was the "spell checker." But "idiot" from a nurse? That's adding insult to injury.

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 22, 2008 4:49 PM

I believe I was called a "spell checker." And, a coupla days ago, a "lemonade maker."
BTW, nobody's heard from the nurse since she said that, so consider yourselves warned.

Giving the stadium address as your home address = brilliant.

Picturing Henry Gibson and the Illinois Nazis rolling up to 1060 West Addison (Wrigley Field) in 'Blues Brothers'... good times.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 22, 2008 4:57 PM

Why does every non-move the Skins make "stun" somebody, whether they are inside the organization or a rival exec? I can't believe all of these people are "stunned" and/or have their jaws on the floor. Does Jasno have to sensationalize everything?

Posted by: Carl Williams | July 22, 2008 3:01 PM

Funny, I was going to post almost the exact same comment. It's really too bad we are stuck with Jason La Canfora for yet another year, as he struck out in his attempts to get a national gig. Oh well...

Posted by: OG Barno | July 22, 2008 5:02 PM

Dang it, I hate having to argue with an anon at 4:16. Our o-line is above avg, our DBs are a very good unit ... our QB is might be slightly below avg ... but near the middle

Anyone else a little scared when you hear that Favre is being shopped around and one NFC team is talking?

Posted by: svxcountry | July 22, 2008 5:37 PM

From the Peter King mailbag on SI.com:

BEAUTIFUL THOUGHT. From JJ, of Louisville: "It will be good to see a Redskins jersey with "Taylor" on it running around and making plays again.''

Wow. Touching sentiment. That's nice.

Posted by: svxcountry | July 22, 2008 5:37 PM

Not going to be Romo, Eli, or McNabb, so no worries here. [Also, remaining cap space officially spent and plashed by signing Jason Taylor, so yet another reason for no worries.]

Posted by: dcsween | July 22, 2008 5:46 PM

A little housekeeping...the team placed Phillip Daniels and Alex Buzbee on injured reserve and re-signed defensive end J.T. Mapu.

Sleepy is awake!

* Many people complained about drafting Fred Davis, myself included, but he looked like a veteran today in his one on one drills. His best work was vs. Marcus Washington, who jammed Davis at the line, and continued to hold Davis until Fred broke his route to the other side of the field and caught the pass with ease.

Lisa makes a mean casserole but she won't let me blog anymore.

I like the Taylor trade, A LOT. I know it only leaves us with possibly 4 picks next year, but we were desperate and picked up a pro bowler essentially for a 2nd.

Still hate Snyder with a passion, but if he keeps Czabe (an uncensored Czabe) I'll move him down to number 2 on my HATE list.

I'm sorry to be so out of the loop, but is there somewhere people have discussed how the Redskins closed Redskins Park to the Washington Post (Jason Reid's thing, in particular)? I've just never heard of anything like it before. It's kind of shocking. Is this only for training camp, or is this how it will be from now on? Someone set me straight.

Posted by: DCUnited2 | July 22, 2008 6:36 PM

DCUnited2, Cindy the editor can give the details, but I think what's been specifically prohibited is broadcasting any video content from the Park -- I think that's the sole province of the Redskins' official broadcast partners or something like that. And I think it applies to everybody who's not a partner, not just the Post. Though I could be wrong about that.

The Post's beat reporters are both there at the Park covering training camp, in the media room, all that stuff, as far as I know...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 22, 2008 6:49 PM

I said it before and I'll say it again. Lavar. league minny and a motorcycle helmet. It's a steal. and why aren't we going after Spikes if they're look for vets. He played with london for years. Seems like a no brainer to me. Not to mention the NFC east loves picking up everyone else's throw aways.

Posted by: Ben | July 22, 2008 6:53 PM

Ben, Lot of teams need LBs, but none of they are going after Spikes. Guy had a lot of injuries and has nothing left. Remember, he was an Auburn teammate of Stephen Davis.

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 22, 2008 6:59 PM
