Rookies Kelly, Brooks Agree to Terms (Updated)
From Jason Reid:
The Redskins have completed negotiations with two more draft picks, agreeing to terms with wide receiver Malcolm Kelly - one of three big receivers they selected in the second round - and punter Durant Brooks. With training camp scheduled to begin in a week, the Redskins finalized deals with Kelly and Brooks, leaving only three of their 10 draft picks unsigned, though specifics of the agreements were not immediately available.
Kelly, the 51st overall selection out of Oklahoma, is the highest pick to have reached an agreement with the team. The Redskins still are in talks with the representatives of their two other second-round picks - wide receiver Devin Thomas and pass-catching tight end Fred Davis. Kelly (6 feet 4, 218 pounds) is considered among the keys to Washington's plan to open up the offense under rookie head coach Jim Zorn.
"Malcolm is excited and the Redskins are excited," said Kelly's agent, Chad Speck. "The Redskins believe Malcolm can really contribute to what Jim Zorn wants to accomplish, and he's very excited to get to camp" next week.
After trading their first-round pick - No. 21 overall - to the Atlanta Falcons on the first day of the two-day draft, the Redskins used their three second-round picks, including two acquired in the deal with the Falcons, in an attempt to bolster their receiving corps, which needed an infusion of talent for Zorn to run his version of the West Coast offense.
Kelly slid down several draft boards because of his disappointing performances in the 40-yard dash (he posted times as high as 4.69 seconds) in workouts and questions about his maturity. Some teams also voiced concerns about Kelly's knees, but Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said he received favorable reports about Kelly from a Sooners coach.
Brooks, the Redskins' sixth-round draft pick out of Georgia Tech, is expected to compete with veteran Derrick Frost for the team's punting job. In drafting Brooks, Washington was trying to send a message to Frost. After offering Frost, a free agent in the offseason, only a veteran minimum contract to re-sign, the Redskins made the unusual move of drafting a punter, selecting Brooks with the 168th overall pick.
Teams rarely expend draft picks on punters because other positions are considered more important, and NFL punters typically take time to develop. The Redskins last drafted a punter in 1993, selecting Ed Bunn of Texas-El Paso with the second of their two third-round picks. Bunn did not make the team.
But with so many picks in the draft, and Danny Smith, Washington's special teams coach, having strongly recommended Brooks, Cerrato selected a punter. Brooks won the Ray Guy Award as college football's top punter last season. He had a 40.6-yard net average as a senior. Frost had a 36.4-yard net average for the Redskins in 2007.

I've heard that it takes kickers a while to adjust to NFL, but how come? Aren't the duties (uh, punt the ball) pretty much the same?
Posted by: Josh | July 11, 2008 5:43 PM
Uh, Jason, it's not that unusual to draft punters:
2007: 3 punters, 3 place kickers
2006: 2 punters, 2 place kickers
2005: 2 punters, 3 place kickers
2004: 3 punters, 3 place kickers
What would have been unusual was to re-sign Frost for more than the vet minimum with those lousy numbers that he put up.

Josh,
Here are the negatives on Brooks from one scouting service -- what he'll need to overcome to adapt to the NFL:
Negatives: Has a very powerful leg with the ability to angle his punts towards the boundaries, but needs to improve his accuracy and placement, as he has had a good share of his attempts result in touchbacks (20 of 144 kicks)...Generally will use a two-step approach, but based on field position, he will sometimes lengthen it by a half step, making his kicking time look a bit deliberate (also affects his hang time, as he will average 4.8 seconds with his hang time on a two-step approach, but it drops to an average of 4.0 seconds or lower when taking extra steps)...At times, he gets caught up in kicking for long distances, kicking the ball away rather than trying to position it towards the sidelines... Has good athletic skills, adequate strength and timed speed, yet did not register any tackles in his role as the safety valve on the coverage units...Seems a bit reluctant to get involved in contact as a tackler, preferring to let others handle that job...Has handled just punting duties throughout his college career and can't be considered even an emergency fill-in as a place-kicker or kickoff specialist.

I'll be interested to see how the signings of the WR's go. Kelly will most likely contribute in the regular offense sooner than Thomas. How the skins structure their performance bonuses etc should to telling.

I wouldn't be surpised to see one more year from Frosty and Brooks on the Practice Squad this season. Not saying it'll happen, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Latest news re: Brett Favre....the Packers will not release him. Might trade him but no release.
My take: I LOVE Brett Favre and was very sad when he retired. However, we need to develop our young QB and not mess with his head. I think Brett needs to go back to Green Bay and make it work there and Green Bay is crazy if they trade him.

Lisa,
Good to see you back. What do you think of the Wizards draft? And how are they going to get better next year? They seem to be staying put while everyone else passes them.

etrod,
This won't happen. Any team in the league could take Brooks off the practice squad and as soon as a punter falters, Brooks will be gone. Four weeks, max.

I agree he should go back to GB but if they don't want him they should try and trade him so they can have some control on where he goes. It'd be crazy to release him and have him go to the Vikings. The Bears will probably only suck a little less if he goes there. The Lions? No idea.
I think the Pack is nuts for not wanting him back.
Posted by: skinswest | July 11, 2008 6:39 PM
Packers probably can't trade Favre. No one would want to take on that salary. So, Favre would have to agree to a pay cut in order to be traded. Why would he want to agree to a pay cut to be traded? He can make a better deal as a free agent.
Favre has the Packers by the short hairs. Or the nads, to quote one of our anons.

yeah, you know his reasoning wasn't totally out of this world either. Basically he said give Jason Campbell a year to learn Zorn's system, not just forget about Campbell all together.... because, you know, I'm a big Campbell fan but who could say no to Favre?

Good point but it's by their own doing IMO for not taking him back. Unless they can't because of the cap as well.
Posted by: skinswest | July 11, 2008 6:52 PM
other than the Packers, I mean.
Posted by: wonsapnatm | July 11, 2008 6:53 PM
TE,according to what I've heard Javale McGee (with the Wizards) is raw but has talent - and he is 7 foot tall. I do think they need to sign another player - someone defensive-minded like James Posey to try and get to the next level. And we have to pray that everyone stays healthy this year.
Re: Favre. I heard that Packers management flew down to Mississippi in March, talked with Brett, he said he was going to return and everyone was happy. Then 2-3 days later, he announced his retirement. If that is true, it explains the Packers reluctance to embrace his return - yet again.
Posted by: Lisa | July 11, 2008 6:54 PM
Of course there are alot of teams with much better cap situations than the skins.
Posted by: skinswest | July 11, 2008 6:55 PM
Favre is a PIA soap opera for sure, but he's also a helluva QB. Pack should just deal with it.
Posted by: skinswest | July 11, 2008 6:57 PM
I don't know...from a financial stand point. Jason's contract is up in (I believe ) 2010. SO we have to find out what we have in JC. If he sits for a year, then we have to open negotiations on a major contract with a QB that we have a relatively small body of work.
(Sorry about the run-on sentences)

Farve to the Skins is interesting. In fact it is the pretty much same system being installed that Brett played in under Mr. Hoggy and won a ring. the Skins have tons of weapons....Brett would definitely improve the offense.....What do ya say...??I say go for it what the hell.....Even if it's for 2 seasons...I know we have campbell but I think this is something ya juts have to go for.
I don't know....just saying lol Interesting thought though...

What ticks me off is the sports media speculating that the Skins will go after Favre because "Snyder loves signing the splashy players." Yes, that USED to be true but Snyder has not signed anyone "splashy" the last few years. Perhaps Snyder has changed due to salary cap restraints or maybe he has truly wised up. That remains to be seen but the media is basing their statements on past (not recent) history.

YahooSports is reporting the 'Skins also signed Malcolm Kelly today.
"ASHBURN, Va. (AP)--The Washington Redskins on Friday agreed to terms with second-round draft pick Malcolm Kelly and sixth-round selection Durant Brooks.
Kelly, a receiver from Oklahoma, agreed to a four-year contract."

I am not say'in...but I guess I am say'in..Brett would be a better choice this year (potential sleeper superbowl season for the skins with Farve...CL, I know understand your comment on the "True/Real Fan". To be honest, any American living in the US or abroad is PATRIOTIC, I know this because my father was a Naval Academy Graduate and my family has a history of, "Serving" so to speak. The fact that I choose not to join the military or "SERVE" means nothing regarding my patriotism. It does mean that when I want to know how the "Navy" or "Airforce" is performing/doing, I ask my father or brother first as they have first hand knowledge on what the "Real or True" answer is...albeit from their perspective. I am sure you are not a "TOOL", but please keep the football/politics analogies limited, I would say ALL NFL fans are Patriotic...happy forth and Brett would be better for the Skins this year..in my humble patriotic opinion.

Redskins Agree To Terms With Kelly
Redskins.com
July 11, 2008
Ashburn, VA - The Washington Redskins today announced that they have agreed to terms with second-round selection Malcolm Kelly, the 51st overall selection in the 2008 National Football League Draft. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The wide receiver is the seventh and highest of the Redskins' 10 draft picks to sign or agree to terms. While at the University of Oklahoma, Kelly earned second-team All-Big XII honors as a sophomore and junior, before opting to enter the draft with one year of eligibility remaining. He ranks second to Mark Clayton all-time in Sooners history with 144 receptions, 21 touchdowns and nine 100-yard receiving games, and is fifth in school annals with 144 receptions.
Kelly started 33 of 38 games in three seasons at Oklahoma, including all 14 in 2007, when he caught 49 passes for 821 yards (16.8 avg.) and nine touchdowns. That followed a sophomore campaign that saw Kelly open 13 of 14 games and register 62 receptions for 993 yards (16.0 avg.) and 10 touchdowns.
The 6-foot-4, 219-pound Kelly was a Freshman All-America honorable mention and All-Big XII Freshman first-team choice by the Sporting News in 2005 when he hauled in 33 passes for 471 yards and two scores. In doing so, Kelly became the first Oklahoma freshman to lead the team in receiving since 1975. That followed a two-time all-state career at Longview High School in his hometown of Longview, Texas.

CEJ called it right. 2008 is the year that Jason Campbell either shines or moves elsewhere. Changing to a system that isn't all that friendly to his talents could be a problem. Not just his size and slow release, but his only vet WRs are small. The WCO likes big WRs. The big WRs are the rookies, and will take 1-2 seasons to develop.
What do you do when a Campbell's is up an you don't know what you have? Resign Favre??
Posted by: AL Zeke etc | July 11, 2008 7:34 PM
I must admit i did not like the Malcolm Kelly pick at first.thought we should have gone D.E. with the pick but watching him on the practice field he has the best hand's i have ever seen come through D.C. he is a quick study and know's how to get open and can out jump db for the ball.

Favre should sit back in GB and enjoy life. Right up until a QB playing for a top team gets nicked up. Then Favre will command massive $$ and it will be a win-win situation.
Brady, Manning (either), Romo, Rivers, Garrard, Rodgers, Cutler, Hasselback (wouldn't Holmgren love that?), McNabb, etc ...
The first time any one of these guys goes down ... Favre will be the first call the team makes.
Posted by: AL Zeke etc | July 11, 2008 7:39 PM
D.C. -- I'm guessing you've been a Skins fan for 15 years or less. Because there are a few WRs that came through town with good hands before that. Guys that you wouldn't be comparing Malcom Kelly to just yet ...

Whoa, whoa, whoa...did anyone else pick up this little tidbit from the updated version of this post?
"Some teams also voiced concerns about Kelly's knees, but Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, said he received favorable reports about Kelly from a Sooners coach."
Nice, Vinny. Way to solicit a neutral, unbiased opinion. If this guy is Michael Westbrook 2.0, I want Vinny's taint on my wall as an object lesson to those who look to sully the good name of the Washington Redskins!
Posted by: brownwood26 | July 11, 2008 8:00 PM
You want his taint on your wall? Not me dude. That's not cool to look at.
Posted by: scampbell1975 | July 11, 2008 8:03 PM
I'd pass on Favre as well. A few years back he threw around 30 ints primarily because he didn't have the relationship with his WR's to be successful. Those recievers were youung and also learning the WCO for the first team similar to this Redskin's team.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 11, 2008 8:04 PM
I'm a huge OU fan and watched almost every game Kelly played there. He has great hands, knows how to get open (even without "combine" speed), and is a great competitor. I'm really happy that he is on the Redskins, and I think you guys will grow to appreciate him. He is a gamer, and he simply doesn't drop anything.
Posted by: lamont | July 11, 2008 8:09 PM
Campbell, ummm, by top teams I meant teams teams that are top teams and teams that are not top teams, but don't completely suck either. So really, I'm not narrowing it down much at all ...
Posted by: AL Zeke etc | July 11, 2008 8:10 PM
I don't know Kelly at all. Speed is a great thing, but there are guys that have been very effective who aren't that fast in a 40. Good hands with an instinct for getting open plus physical toughness can take a player a long way in this league.
Posted by: AL Zeke etc | July 11, 2008 8:14 PM
I predict Malcolm Kelly will be a contract holdout till camp starts, stalling the need for a cut, and thus my addiction to making predictions today.
Basis for these predictions? Exclusively LIFO accounting ... and Spidey sense.
Posted by: dcsween | June 13, 2008 2:03 PM

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 11, 2008 8:14 PM
I think most Sooner fans would agree with me that Kelly has been NFL material for a couple years now. I think the only guys on the team the past 5 or so years who were better pro prospects were Adrian Peterson (no surprise there) and Tommie Harris.
Maybe Roy Williams...if the Cowgirls had been smart enough to convert him to WLB.

As for the Favre thing, relax all. Favre is an upgrade over Campbell. It is sadly that simple. I don't think you need to make this trade but if it happened it would be an upgrade and not the end of the Jason Campbell era. I know that would be the story but it wouldn't necessarily be the truth.
There is no reason that either former number 1 draft pick (Rodgers or Campbell) can't wait another year to lead a playoff team. Your telling me their fragile egos are paramount to a possible super bowl. It they don't understand who is replacing them for one more year then they most likely will never be a great QB.
Marino, Montana, Favre; short list of QBs that if available to lead the right personnel in the right system you should look at the cost to do it.
Personally, I think the Pack should just use him but if somehow #4 lands here, this is what SHOULD happen:
The Skins wait at least two pre-season games preferably three since there are five, to determine if Jason has what it takes to take us to the playoffs this year. If then it looks like no playoffs then you tell Jason next year no matter what it's your team we need you to keep thinking this is your team because we're getting #4 over here and he may break down.
Then Favre comes for ONE year because you don't want the same drama next year and he has no meaning to our tradition - he would be a mercenary.
Favre if traded is a conditional draft pick (2nd round if the 'skins win the SB, pick 64), he is signed for 4 million bucks because he wears #4 and is obviously doing this for the fire in his belly Rocky Balboa stuff and not the cold hard cash, imho, and lastly as always the team that trades is responsible for that old contract of 12M. Then you figure out what to do with Todd Collins maybe trade him to GB.

To the Truth,
You are as regular as an old man eating oatmeal. It seems the old man - this blog - may no longer have bowel issues thanks to you're regularity.
I for one welcome it, whether you're a "cool"l regular or not should not concern the Truth. Bangkokben frowns at the Truth's need for validation. The truth is the truth and Bangkokben takes it (or your personhood) with a grain of salt.
P.S. Thanks for not mentioning UGA for a while now.
But now for curiosity's sake, is there a new Uga and what roman numeral is it? I assume it wouldn't be a b-itch (female dog for those who want all words to be evil - see Kost's post about the AFA and gay, etc.) as i think the boys from the great state of Georgia would appreciate a dog with, um, hardware, er, appendages, or you know something that represents testosterone. Hey, I'm cool with a b-itch but I'm from Northern Virginia, originally - not quite a true southerner - but don't let my dad hear that.
Posted by: bangkokben | July 12, 2008 1:41 AM
Looks as if the post won't allow the literal meaning of female dog, thus the hyphens. It certainly is easier having computers check things regardless of context. 37 year-old-man here nostalgic for a time when words weren't so stinky powerful.
P.S. Love the "nads" references, can someone give me the very abbridged Jesse Jackson story since all news reporting it can only do so without repeating the offenseive words? What exactly did he say?

Why is this a make or break season for Campbell? Quarterbacks must be given the opportunity to play and develop. I will admit that Campbell must show and prove this year, but to imply that if he doesn't he should be gone is ridiculous.
He missed a lot of throws last year, but look how many dropped balls we had. Look at the conservative play calling. We had injuries at the WR position and drama with "The Receiver".
Having said all of that...we have weapons, and a pass happy head coach...NO EXCUSES!!!
Posted by: sicwidit | July 12, 2008 9:07 AM
I don't know about make or break, but Soupy has to play better. That's how the NFL works.
And he's right at that point in his contract that he needs to prove that he's worth a top-ten QB contract -- because that's what he'll be asking for.
