The Immaculate Deception
There is a reason the media schlubs around here have a hard time believing a lot of what comes out of Vinny Cerrato's mouth, and a reason he has credibility issues. Yesterday was a prime example, though hardly unprecedented in these parts. Cerrato repeatedly denied the team was interested in Jason Taylor to the local media (via text, phone call, and then in front of the camera at a press conference), from about 2 pm right up until he tripped over his own feet entering the media room to announce the trade.
Then today in multiple interviews, with ESPN and Sports Illustrated, he implicitly concedes that he was lying through his teeth to every media entity that covers the Redskins on a daily basis. Yet somehow he still wonders why people don't take him seriously? (This is also the guy who claims the team misquoted him in its own press release in 2005. I'll never quite fathom that one.
Here's what Cerrato said about the Jason Taylor trade talks on ESPN radio this morning:
"We went out to practice at 3:00, and I talked to Bill Parcells probably like three times on the practice field, back and forth. We went and discussed some different terms, we came in after practice, talked to 3 or 4 of the veterans players, and asked them what they thought, what type of guy and everything, they said great guy. Everything was positive. Called Parcells back around 6:15 and told them, we'll do the deal. We faxed papers back and forth, got Jason Taylor on the phone and we were done."
Peter King of SI posted today that Cerrato told him he called Parcells at 3:10 pm yesterday:
"I'd called Bill a couple of months ago, I guess, like a lot of other teams did, doing their due diligence, asking him what he was interested in for Taylor,'' Cerrato said. "But nothing ever came of it. I didn't talk to him again about it 'til this afternoon. Then, during the afternoon practice, I'd say I talked to Bill three times about the terms, trying to work something out.''
But yesterday, minutes after the afternoon practice was over, here is what Cerrato said to the local media, repeatedly: "We haven't talked to anybody yet on anything." He then denied, again, any attempts to land Taylor to representatives of virtually every media entity that approached him at Redskins Park.
Now, is lying to the media anything new? Nah. And hey, it's his prerogative I suppose. But most people are more astute that this, maybe find a way to cover their tracks a little bit better. And, more to the point, most pros in the sports business learned long ago how to say - "No comment," or "Hey, we're working on things to make our team better and we'll let you know if we complete something." It's pretty easy to send a signal without destroying what was left of your credibility with the people who cover you only hours into the first day of your first training camp as the head of the Redskins' front office (with that fancy executive vice president title an all)
No surprises on this end, of course. I learned my lesson long ago and went roughly three years without talking to the guy, from the 2005 draft until the 2008 draft, and it had no adverse impact on my ability to do my job. Actually, it's pretty refreshing.

that's what GMs do...they also talked on ESPN radio this morning (Mike and Mike) about whether Parcells was wrong for consistently saying Taylor would be a member of the Fins this season...the verdict? No, he's not wrong, that's what GMs do when negotiations and bargaining power hang in the balance...man this guy whines like a little b**ch, how long have you been a reporter on the NFL...misinformation is the name of the game
Posted by: Puhlease | July 21, 2008 3:36 PM
Sorry JlaC,
You know how much I appreciate your effort & writing. But I have a hard time sympathising with media. Not that I have any sympathy for Cerrato either - it's just you both have jobs to do and they are contrary to each other.
It's like me complaining about stupid tourists... what's the point!?

I basically agree, but so what.......
Can we get some details about practice?

I am all for pissing this so call reporter...go back to Baltinore !!!
Jaso Taylor WELCOME !

Not sure why anyone would expect a GM to speak candidly ... but that said, affirmative "misstatements" are something other than lack of candor. Still, no surprises (or worries) here.
Being a spokesman for a secretive operation can be a grueling job if you lack the stomach for "intentional misstatements" ... that's why some White House Press Secretaries last longer than others.
Posted by: dcsween | July 21, 2008 3:37 PM
Yikes...its not venom, its logic. Why in the hell would you tip your hand? What benefit does it have to let the world know what you are interested in or what you are doing until it happens.
For all you bitter Need To Know Now fans, Vinny and FO doesn't owe us anything in re to inside information or dealings.
JLC, i actually enjoy your writing, but please stop acting as though you are owed something from Vinny. Report and speculate, its what the rest of the media world does.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:38 PM
Jason, keep it up. Love the by-line on this post. Of course there was nothing immaculate about it.
I found out at an early age I was a poor liar, so I stopped doing it.
Then there is Vinny, who continues to work on the craft...I guess I forgive him since he got the deal done.
Posted by: Stumped | July 21, 2008 3:38 PM
lmao, sween!

=======
I learned my lesson long ago and went roughly three years without talking to the guy, from the 2005 draft until the 2008 draft, and it had no adverse impact on my ability to do my job.
===========
lol at "no adverse impact". Sure. If you consider having to consistently rely on anonymous sources as not adversely impacting your ability to do your job.
In any event, Cerrato's objective is to improve the team. Now, when he knows another team could swoop in and snatch his only real chance to get some DE depth, he has to lie. We see how close that 3-way with NYG, NO, and MIA was to being realized. Where do you expect his loyalties are? Do you expect him to be more concerned about your job than his?
I would figure that would be a Day 1 lesson for any sports journalist. You should talk to Vinny, he's such a bad liar it would be pretty easy to suss him out.
Posted by: je suis un pizza | July 21, 2008 3:38 PM
JLC, I hate to say this but Vinny will never give you info (I heard him say this on Redskins Radio) - he did not mention your name but it was apparent who he was talking about.
That being said, it is my understanding that because Taylor was under contract to the Dolphins, discussions with/about him must be kept quiet or Vinny and the Skins could be held in violation - and heavily fined ($$$, draft picks, etc.)
Posted by: Lisa | July 21, 2008 3:38 PM
I understand the frustration but I personally have no problem with this.
There was another deal in the works with Miami and keeping it a secret as long as possible was tantamount lest NO and NYG further expedite the 3 way trade idea.
Posted by: Skinz | July 21, 2008 3:40 PM
I am a fan of the blog and you update it more frequently then most out there, and for that I thank you. But more often than not recently your sour grapes just happen to spew into your work. Ever think that telling the media you were trying to trade for Taylor would reach another team and drive the price up even more than what they ended up paying. Nobody ever likes to tip their hand let alone when an important cog on the DL goes down. Somebody is beginning to sound quite a bit like Len Pasquarelli when it comes to the skins.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:40 PM
I think the moral of the story is not to bother checking in with and/or quoting the Executive VP of the team (either the Skins or the Dolphins) ... or most other GMs ... though I don't think Phil Savage or Ozzie Newsome have either been caught in direct "misspeaks", esp. so quickly after making them.
Must be a game among GMs ... like the first GM, a young George Washington, "I cannot tell a lie ... Vinny Cerrato cut down that tree ..."
Posted by: dcsween | July 21, 2008 3:40 PM
Just curious...where is the line drawn between being savvy and being deceitful?
If he tells you yes, they are going after Taylor, what kind of idiot does that make him? Do you really want other teams to know our strategy?
I know as a fan I am curious and of course would like up to date information. But I'd rather it be late info than find out that because you got some leaked info, the dolphins got an extra draft pick or another team made a better deal and got him...That would not be cool
Same thing happened in the Soccer Insider. Goff was getting info on who would be starting/on injury list well before the games, and other teams were taking advantage of it. So DCU closed practices. It wasn't the reason they were sucking, but sometimes it is better to keep info in house.
I know that's contradictory to JLC's job, but I feel like if JLC had a better relationship with the FO, instead of just bashing them/applauding them on the internet, maybe the information would be more forthcoming...maybe not, but maybe.

There was no reason for Vinny to lie. Jason's right. "No comment" or the like will always suffice. At least this is honest.
This is how the Redskins do business, folks. They are liars.
Posted by: Pants on Fire | July 21, 2008 3:41 PM
As an NFL observer, I've seen this happen in every NFL city. Hell, the Dolphins and the almighty Parcells weren't commenting even after the 'Skins announced it.

Actually, Jasno had the title cued up and on hold for years and finally had a reason to write a blog for it.
Posted by: Not Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:43 PM
...and I hardly begrudge Jason for posting this. In fact, he's doing us a service. We now know not to believe what Vinny Cerrato says. Although, like Jason, we already knew that.
Posted by: Pants on Fire | July 21, 2008 3:43 PM
Jason is absolutly correct. Vinny should telegraph every move he wants to make and it should be put into a story so he has 0 bargaining position. It's only fair so Jason can do HIS job.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:43 PM
In general this is a media complaint I think fans care little about. I knew immediately that the Skins talked to Miami months and that is why things moved so fast. Common sense.
Moving on...

Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:44 PM
Seriously, if Vinny had tipped their hand and said "yes, we are talking to them"... your story would have been how Vinny was such a moron and could have had JT for a 3rd rounder... but since he opened his mouth other teams found out and the price went up. Admit it. I love your blog... really do... but this is a little bit of Seagull reporting.. that is... you fly in... crap on something and fly away... it's too easy.
Posted by: Scott | July 21, 2008 3:44 PM
JLC- Did you ever think he did not want to happen, what did happen? The story breaking and other NFC East teams jumping in and stealing him away from us? Almost happened with the Giants and we are glad Vinny tried to protect a move he knew he HAD to make.
Think logical from a business standpoint and not from the media standpoint.

Any nice catches by the three twos today?
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:45 PM
These were needless misstatements.
Most people in Vinny's position value their own credibility, don't you think?
That's why the no comment option would have been so much better, not for the media, but for Vinny.
Couple bad throws for JC.
Couple bad misstatements for Vinny.
It must be July.
Posted by: Stumped | July 21, 2008 3:45 PM
We have not once in the last two days gotten any info on how any non-injured player has looked so far, aside from Smoot coming back from the sprained ankle today...that's the choice of the bloggers right there...surely they could have said something about someone who was actually participating in the practices
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:45 PM

Posted by: je suis un pizza | July 21, 2008 3:38 PM
This makes no sense at all. The Saints were giving up a second and fifth round pick -- Parcells had settled for a second and six round pick. The timing of the misstatement makes no sense at all ... why bother with making ANY statement other than to have some "fun" with the local media? And why bother coming clean later with national media types like PeKing or whathisface at ESPN ... other than to have a little MORE fun with local media? This was just a cat playing with mice. Simply messing with minds.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:47 PM
I usually agree with you, Jason. But you sound like a little Nancy with this post. Give it a break. It is sometimes necessary to keep things secret. Did you hear Vinny say that Parcells told him EVERY team in the NFC East had called that day? And sometimes a "no comment" is all the comment you need. Just get over the fact you didn't break the story. So lame. What do you expect? You sound like such a snot nosed baby with this post.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:49 PM
There's a difference between no statements and misstatements. Vinny seemed to purposefully use the latter. I can see why, as a reporter, Jasno would be upset. Especially when idiots on this blog bash him for being "scooped" by other news outlets when he's accurately reporting what he's been told.
Posted by: psps23 | July 21, 2008 3:49 PM
The fact is, regardless of whether or not Vinny is deceptive or whether deception is simply the name of the game, this isn't what should be reported. This is a report about the nature of reporting. I don't care about that. I care about what is going on at training camp. This report comes off as Jasno griping. I don't care about that. I care about what is going on at training camp. Jasno needs to learn that the honesty of the GM or how forthright he is with the press while he is in the middle of making a deal is not what people care about. The blog should not be a forum for personal vendettas. The blog should be about what goes on at training camp.
Posted by: Mike in VA | July 21, 2008 3:50 PM
Jason has continually reminded us that he does not work for the Skins and has no obligation to the team, so why does he expect any level of cooperation from the FO?
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:50 PM
The soccer analogy to use is the USA has Bradley as their coach and not Jurgen Klinsmen! You don't want to un-Klinsman our Taylor just for a scoop do you? If you did, I might night be able to break bread with you.
Got to get a new post up quick! with practice speculation, ahem?
Posted by: bangkokben | July 21, 2008 3:53 PM

Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 3:53 PM
Jasno's tone is consistent with the tone of former White House Press Secretaries when THEY get played and used to propagate false information.
btw, peeps up here were venting yesterday about Clayton and a bunch of other national outlets had the news before it was up here. Given that the WaPo needs to confirm story lines with independent, non-Cerrato sources (as opposed to what those national media outlets can get), will the anons who were bashing the lateness of the news yesterday please stand up if you are also bashing on this thread?

I beg to differ Sween, that's what 'plausible deniability' was invented for....
It's one thing not to comment, another to deliberately mislead. Parcells did not deliberately misspeak; if nobody offered what the Fins wanted, JT would have started the season as a Fins player. Parcells would never have cut him.

Posted by: Alex35332 | July 21, 2008 3:54 PM
The only people for whom Vinny's credibility has any real bearing are the other personnel departments around the league. What he tells the media, and how they take it, has nothing at all to do with how he does his job, which is to get the Redskins the best players he can.
Mr. La Conforta needs to understand that it is not Vinny's job to be the PR manager, or to keep him and other members of the media informed. The very nature of Vinny's job puts him in an adversarial relationship with guys like him. He should consider himself lucky Vinny doesn't feed him false info, as some other GM's around the league have been known to do.

Fair enough, but it also goes both ways. I hope Vinny and Snyder don't expect to be getting rave reviews to the public when they treat certain members of the media this way. There's a reason they have a less-than-stellar status in the eyes of the NFL-viewing public.

A lot of people seem to have trouble reading for comprehension.
A "no comment" response to enquiries about whether the Redskins were trying to trade for ANYone does not "tip their hand".
Are you kidding me? Every other NFL team KNEW that the Skins were going after Jason Taylor 5 minutes after Philip Daniels was carted off the field.
The fact that they suppressed the news on hte severity of Buzbee's injury until after they'd done the trade was a smart thing to do, as they might have had to trade even more picks for him. BUT they didn't come out and directly lie about Buzbee's status to help their bargaining stance.
This plays back to your EVP/SVP/RVP/VP/DVP/whatever's desire to be seen as 'a player' in the greater NFL market, and therefore WANTing to be heard as often as possible.
You don't see Scott Pioli mentioned as teh Pats are trying to get deals done, you don't hear Ossie Newsome being quoted all the time even though the strong rumo(u)rs continue that 'The Diva' may go to Balmer, do you? Why is that?
Is it because those guys are chumps? No. It's because the media will just get rebuffed with a blanket 'no comment'. They won't be lied to, they just won't be told anything, so the media leaves them alone.
Your boy Vinny likes the limelight too much to sit in the shadows and just do the deals, and this is the price you pay. Media will always be antagonistic because he'd rather lie than say nothing.

Glad Vinny didn't talk...he's just trying to walk to his office to get the deal wrapped up and these hungry hamsters pepper him with questions that the hamsters ALREADY know he cannot openly answer.
HELLO? you said you didn't trust him before, so are you surprised????
So, he says "YES, WE ARE TRYING TO TRADE FOR TAYLOR"?
Then, it appears instantly on this blog courtesy of Cyndi...Then the Giants send Shockey to Orleans for Taylor and the Fins get Orleans picks....catastrophe.
Seriously, what did YOU expect?
Posted by: the_squire | July 21, 2008 4:12 PM
Zorn also denied trying to get Taylor. Why are we not crapping on him too. To me, "no comment" would have fueled the speculation created by ESPN. Who carriers if Vinny lied. He was protecting his interests.
Posted by: 72 | July 21, 2008 4:14 PM
i often wonder why reporters ask such questions in the first place. seriously, do you expect him to answer honestly? and if he said "no comment" you'd construe that as being "yes". really, what do you expect?
and really, i know vinny's a knob and it's probably no fun to talk with the guy, but like it or not, he is one of the inside guys on the the team. to intentionally not talk to the guy for three years (and brag about it) sounds like borderline dereliction of duty. not saying you have to publish every thing he says, but at least talk to the guy.

=========
That's all well and good, but the WaPo can't have it both ways. For example, I think it was when the Zorn story broke and the WaPo didn't break the scoop, that JLC posted some comment along the lines of, "well, we knew about this last week but couldn't confirm it until after it broke".
Please. Live by confirmation from anonymous source, die by confirmation by anonymous source.

Many of us don't think of Vinny as our boy, we're just not looking for any and every opportunity to crucify him, and would like the opportunity to imagine that getting a stud DE who probably has a few good years left could be a good thing, without those daydreams being sh*t on by Jason constantly grinding axe

What is this, your first day as a sports reporter? Here's a clue: Vinnie's job is to serve the best interests of his employer, not your employer. Do you expect him to undermine the confidentiality necessary to accomplish anything in such a cutthroat business, just for the privilege of being your source??? On the other hand, I'm very happy for you that you found it so "refreshing" not to talk to him for three years. Get used to it.
Real professional, pal.

Jason, 2/3 of the time, you do good, but I'm with Vinny on this one; he tells you, he could get in a bidding war.
I would have lied to your face, too (and every other reporter out there) and said something along the lines of "We're trying to evaluate the available talent, via free agency, trades, and waiver wire. We want to at least get a few of the free agents in in the next few days to have a look, and we'll scan the waiver wire up until we solve this issue. We'll do anything we can to help this team beside mortgage our future, and that may include a trade at some point later in the preseason, if we don't have success finding some depth. But we do have some quality players HERE, NOW, in our depth... yes, we're not happy, but it's not the end of the world. But specifically, as to your question, we aren't talking with any teams yet about a trade; it's way too early, we're the only team even in training camp, so many teams won't have had a chance to evaluate if they have talented players that would be available for potential trades."
Bald faced lie, of course, if I'm pulling the trigger in the background on a deal with the Fins, but it sounds good, and gives me time to get a trade lined up without getting into a bidding war.
Posted by: Bill | July 21, 2008 4:24 PM
lisa, that is if the team talks to the player under contract then it's a violation. rember what danny did last year with lance briggs or was it the year before? that was all legal. shti heady move but legal.
jason, he's just big timing you that's all. and btw...this is the only fcking place left in the entire metro area where us fans can actually criticize the team now. don't you ever sell out on us jason. this is our last hope and medium.

I've agreed with Jasno's blog 95% of the time, but this time, its just sour grapes. I'm glad Vinny lied, its the cleverest thing he's done since taking the VP or whatever you call it title. If he came out and said he's in negotiations with The Tuna, he would've of looked like a fool and possibly driven the price even higher. No comment means we're setting up the trade and everyone knows it.

Bill, that wouldn't be a bald faced lie ... that would be misdirection. Nothing you said there is inconsistent with being on the phone with Parcells three times during the afternoon practice. What would be inconsistent with talking to Parcells would be to say something like "We haven't talked to anyone yet on anything." That would be a bald-faced lie.
Posted by: dcsween | July 21, 2008 4:29 PM
I'm curious that everyone seems to be over-looking the fact that Vinny lied to people. Putting aside the love for JLC, Vinny could have danced around the question, but he chose to lie instead. Are you all saying that lying is a generally-accepted principle?
When Vinny says Taylor will 100% be here (in football) for more than a year, who believes him?

Why complain about something as petty as this. Some teams use the media to their advantage (see NYG) and some ignore the media all together and never tell them anything (see NE). It's just the name of the game JLA; you're just hurting your rep when you make comments like this griping about Vinny.

Anybody see this?:
Last Year For Sonny, Sam, Larry? - 7/18 - DCRTV hears rumblings that this could be the last year for the Redskins game-day radio team of Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, and play-by-play man Larry Michael. Next year it could be Mike Patrick doing play-by-play, with Joe Theismann and John Riggins adding color. At least that's what a reliable local radio source tells us. You'll recall that Jurgensen and Huff have been calling Skins' games for several decades, having previously been paired with play-by-play man Frank Herzog.....
(How timely--I am now listening to an ad by that tool Larry Michael on the new "ESPN980" Ugh--another downside to this merger. You suck Synder!!!)
Posted by: Not Anonymous | July 21, 2008 4:32 PM
Jasno's complaints for the most part miss the point:
If Vinny is known to lie, then (1) he can never quell any rumors by saying, "No, this isn't happening," which just leads to rumors running rampant; and (2) reporters look for other sources, and the GM becomes a minor player in getting the story out for his team.
If Vinny wasn't prepared to tell the truth about the Taylor transaction, he should have avoided the media, not avoided the truth.

Yeah I'm sure Cerrato is the first GM to not be completely honest with the media. I'm also sure that Vinny was losing sleep at night over the fact that Jason didn't talk to him for three years. Jason La Canfora: If Snyder told a boldface lie Tuesday about his desire for a GM, then no. And you know what, if actually did an about face and landed a Pioli he would get lauded by everyone.
That's part of the business and deception is part of his job.
=========
I wonder why JLC is changing his tune now?
Posted by: je suis un pizza | July 21, 2008 4:39 PM
You know, if this really was Vinny sticking it to Jasno by outright lying, good for him...Jasno would stick it to Vinny in a second when the opportunity popped up. As a Skins fan, I don't forgive or forget the Front Office's past transgressions, but I still hope for a better future. On the other hand, Jasno is just salivating for Cerrato to make another mistake he can criticize. Anyway, shut up so Jason Reid can actually give us some information about the players while you obsess about Vinny. I'm surprised you didn't make a racist joke about Italians in this post too.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2008 4:40 PM
It is called a smoke sceen. Why would Vinny or any GM tell the only people following his day-to-day dealings, the local media, what he is doing? Some other team could have picked that up, and made a stronger offer befor it was final. What Vinny was telling the natioanl media, what happened after the fact. So far, vinny seems like he has stepped his game up and has come out of the Dan and Joe shadows.
Posted by: Al | July 21, 2008 4:47 PM
This is one-time where Vinny keeping his mouth shut actually played to his advantage. It is now known that the Giants were very interested in Taylor and Vinny could have lost his leverage if he said the wrong thing.
Now, I don't advocate his 'lying' and think a 'No comment' would be better, but there is no reason for him to give out any sensitive information during trade negotiations.

pizza, the difference is about hypothesizing about someone telling a bald faced lie ... and then being on the receiving end of a bald-faced lie.
That said, one of them (Jasno, Jason, or Cindy) actually did post the words up here ("We haven't talked to anyone yet on anything.") ... but it was just factual reporting ... I don't think anyone took it to be truth when it was spoken, esp. given that Clayton was reporting differently (probably getting it from Miami's end).
Just like you can't make a claim for defamation of character if no one would believe it, I don't think Vinny risks getting into real trouble for his intentional misstatements b/c no one expects his words to mean what he says.

I know we are all weighing in on this but--just one more opinion here-Jasno is right to harp on his misdirections for this reason. I run a company myself and find many situations where it isn't in the best interest of our firm to be totally open about what we are thinking. Sometimes it is to be polite and let someone down easy, sometimes to allow us to keep options open, sometimes because the person asking has no darn right to know. Still, our policy here is NEVER to lie. It's unnecessary and to put it directly--it's just plain wrong. You can be vague. Others will draw their conclusions but they really don't know if they are right. They can pontificate all day long about what they THINK you are saying but they have to keep hedging that because the truly don't know.
Jasno pointed this out clearly with his hypotheticals. To me, you could easily say something that is neither here nor there but true: "We are always looking at deals until deals cannot be done becuase that's our job but we like our guys . . . anything can happen. . I obviously can't comment on . . Remeber Chad "no deal" Johnson--talking ain't the same as buying". What this whole thing shows me is that Vinny just isn't good at what seems to be routine honest waffling and that is a sad thing becuase if he cared about his credibility he'd be real good at it by now in this position . . but he isn't.

Exactly. No one should. As JLC even reported, deception is part of the game. JLC obviously knows this. It just sounds like sour grapes that he missed the scoop when he relies on Vinny, whom he knows will lie/deceive/smokescreen/whatever, instead of sniffing around some other front-office types.
Maybe he just didn't have the connections in the front office of Miami that Clayton has. But badmouthing GMs and purposefully not talking to them certainly isn't the way to build those connections.
I just think it's a non-story that's taking up JLC's limited time to write on more substantive issues that everyone wants to read about.

Hope this is informative for some of you un-educated hamsters, who've been pounding Jason. The Man, P Diddy, posted this on the post thread:
Commenting on the last thread...
I have spent the better part of my adult life managing the media for some of the largest corporations in the world. What Jasno is talking about is pretty simple. You never, ever, ever lie to the press unless lives are in danger. Period. It is unethical and unprofessional.
Now, I understand that most folks posting here have never talked to the media or have never been a spokesperson, so it's a little difficult to understand the written and unwritten rules of doing so. If you don't want to answer a question, you simply bridge back to your talking points and provide a non-answer answer: "From the moment last season ended, we have been exploring all avenues for improving our team, and will continue to do so."
Obviously, we only have Jasno's side of the story. I'm just stating the basic fact that there are only one or two exceptional circumstances under which misleading the media is acceptable.

Yup Jasno's whining and blowing off steam...Unlike the posters here, myself included.
But Cerrato's a Yutz for not knowing how to make the "No Comment comment."
Of COURSE everyone knows Cerrato's calling about Taylor. But how simple is it to respond with a real or digital wink and a nod.
To a text message:
"Can't answer now, busy not contacting Parcells."
"What do you think?"
"I could answer that question but then I'd have to kill you."
To a call:
Sec'y calls back.
"Mr. C. is tied up now. He'll get back to you as soon as he can answer that question;
in person:
"Don 't be silly."
A wink and a nod.
Act like a human, in other words.
Lying is not only not necessary, it's stupid.

Oh please. Like we would not have known what "no comment" or "we're looking at options" really meant. Nothing wrong with misinformation.
Now the real problem would be if he was telling the local media (i.e., the Post) one thing and giving the real scoop to ESPN or that tool Peter King. THAT would be wrong, but it doesn't sound like thats what happened here. If ESPN had asked Vinny about it before the deal was done he would have denied everything to them too.

Posted by: Chris Mortensen | July 21, 2008 5:32 PM
I think you're being a bit naive Jason. What do you expect him to say? If he said they were in talks with another team, everyone would have jumped on Jason Taylor. Don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that there is only one guy on the market that is looking to be moved. I'd also point out that if it was "no suprise," why post about it? Sounds like you take it as a jab against you, but just like any management position in a corporation...there is only so much you can tell others.

You say that you conflict with Vinnie has no effect on how you do your job but It seems to me that I knew more about what was going on than you did. I got my information from other columnists on other web sites. They had the info before you. Vinnie has implied had he doesn't trust you not to discolor the facts. He feels he's been burned by you in the past and isn't likely to trust you again. There were other teams from the NFCE calling Parcels about the same player. If the ongoing negotiations had been revealed then the deal might never have happened. Worse yet, Taylor may have ended up with another NFCE team. Honestly, I don't care about the relationship, or lack thereof, you have with Vinnie. All I care about accurate news about the team. It seems that your ability to do your job and provide the news has been compromised do to your inabilty to get along with Vinnie. Many of us feel that we have to take what you say with a grain of salt because of the infamous sources you use. You should be the one getting interviews with Vinny not Mike and Mike or Peter King. You really need to repair the rift with the front office. This certainly does effect how well you do your job.

How can he "vent" about lack of credibility and still maintain integrity himself? This is NOT journalism -- moreover this is why blogs in general still beg for respect. If anyone in charge at WP is monitoring this at all, they should take action immediately. There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF JOURNALISTIC MERIT in what JLC posted here -- and it's merely the cherry on top of the cake of his perpetual ineptitude as a beat writer for the Skins. If the hometown main rag can't field a reporter who has any meaningful access to the team and THIS IS THE RESULT -- then the writing is on the wall. It's time to let JLC go...his time is up and it's never been more apparent. WP -- do something before the season starts and regain a shred of respect from a long time reader.

TRUE REDSKIN FANS WANT TO HEAR ABOUT PRACTICE: COACHES, PLAYERS, AND PLAYS MADE--GOOD OR BAD, AND THE PROGRESSION(OR LACK THERE-OF), MOOD, TEMPO, AND INTENSITY OF THE TEAM. WE WANT TO SEE THROUGH YOUR WORDS WHAT HAPPENED AT PRACTICE ON THE FIELD, AS MUCH AND AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE.
NO ONE CAN LIE TO YOU ABOUT THAT, AND US FANS WOULD THINK YOU'RE THE GREATEST EVER.

I wouldn't care if Cerrato ever talked with me. You're fortunate Jason. Cerrato is a %$^**&%$ idiot and Snyder's lacky. Why did the 'Skins have to throw in the 6 rounder in 2010? The number 2 was enough.

VINNY MAKES JLC DO HIS JOB! More at 11.
Seriously, I can see how this might be a pain, but isn't not like there's no track record -- or that Vinny has much to gain by being more honest.
So what did Parcells tell his peeps at 6pm? Anybody call to find out?
Posted by: WorstSeat | July 21, 2008 6:24 PM
why does this guy take it so personally? lacanfora - news flash: you destroy your own credibility with posts of this tone. and you show an alarming lack of sophistication for a reporter. if Vinny tells you there's a trade in the works before it's completed, he risks alienating the trade partner. his duty is to the Redskins, not you and your cohorts.

who stole who's ice cream?
Are the WP's sales still plummeting? Wonder why.
No matter how many interviews Katharine Weymouth does on NPR or other news outlets won't save the WP from crappy journalism.
JLC, how does Kornheiser conduct himself? By flamming the F.O. at which he tries to get his info?
this blog was a waste of time.

You whiney little man. You are a blogger. Please pick a vocation columinst or blogger. Piss into the wind!!! Get real!!!!

It's called TAMPERING, JLC, you MORON!!!
While a player is under contract to another team, you can't talk to the media about acquiring him. Look at the Minnesota Vikings and the Bret Favre situation to understand what I'm talking about. Although its not exactly the same, you can get my point. Why doesn't some guy (JLC) who is supposed to know about this stuff get it?
Posted by: rb-freedom-for-all | July 21, 2008 6:40 PM
your a whiney little biatch JLC. dont you have a diaper to change or something? If vinny had said 'no comment' one of your INVISIBLE anonymous sources would have made up some huge BS. your just pissed cause he doesnt and never will give you a drop of anything, point blank.
Posted by: done with JLC | July 21, 2008 6:41 PM
I remember Jason talking to Vinny Cerrato on Washington Post Live, and I'm quite sure it wasn't even 6 months ago, much less 3 years. When I saw them tease the episode I really wanted to see how he would question Vinny given the bias he's consistently shown against the team he covers.
So what did he do? Turned poodle and helped lob softballs at Vinny for 20 minutes. Larry Michael couldn't have done it any better.
This moment proved you a total fraud as a journalist, and conveniently forgetting about it has proven you a liar in your own childish whine about being lied to.

a beat reporter that hasn't spoken to the gm in three years should br fired!
Posted by: cabraman | July 21, 2008 8:16 PM
JLC is an idiot. Who the hell are you that Vinny should make sure you are 100% up to date on what's going on behind closed doors? How is this any different than what every other team in professional sports does. Get over yourself. If I were Vinny I wouldn't even bother to fart in your general direction
Posted by: The Diesel | July 21, 2008 8:26 PM
A source close to JLC told me that JLC needed his diaper changed, a warm bottle, and a nap after this tantrum.
A WaPo source with knowledge of the situation said that baby Jasno may also be teething, and thus his blindly lashing out.
More as this after JLC's nappy time is over. Stay tuned.
Posted by: The Truth | July 21, 2008 8:55 PM
Hey, nothing negative. But is Vinnie supposed to tell the media the team wants a player before the negotiations begin? Wouldn't the team be giving up leverage then? I think the Cerrato's forthright after the fact, that's better than most. I like your columns Jason, but I think you should cut him some slack on this one.
Posted by: Chris | July 21, 2008 8:57 PM
JLC is a beatch, too. Still, I can't stand that whiny little Schnydah minion and seriously cant believe any redskin fan is happy that guy is making ANY decisions re our team. Look, it sounds like Zorn didnt even have a say in picking up Taylor, which is a HUGE problem. What happens if we go 0-3, is Vinny the Mooch going to be calling plays.
VC: Hey, boss, I have an idea, lets run 7 wide outs behind a 3 man front. Its real out of the box thinking.
The Schnydah: Vinny, your an idiot, but I like your nose in my *ss. Pick up my drycleaning and then we can talk about this out of the box idea.
Zorn: Guys, shouldn't I be included in this?..
VC and the Schnydah: Shut your hole and go put up more Sean Taylor memorabilia.

Why would any GM talk about discussion that are still in process with reporters??

Hey idiot, do you ever check your grammar? I'm not the best typer in the world but you get paid to do this and should at least check you writing before you post it. And another thing, Peter King now works for ESPN, but if you had any intelligence, you would have known that.
Posted by: Jc | July 21, 2008 9:54 PM
I was one of the biggest Cerrato doubters, but If you look at what he's done since his promotion, honestly, He's been pretty impressive. I love the Zorn hire thought the draft was the best we've had in some time, and his restraint in free agency enabled the Skins to avoid a really bad situation by having enough cap room to handle Taylor's contract and have all rookies signed BEFORE camp started, Please Jason stop Bashing the team that pays your bills
Posted by: skinztattoo89 | July 21, 2008 10:03 PM
So is this what you wanted him to do:
JLC: Any news on Jason Taylor?
Vinny: Well Jason and the rest of the DC media. We are in talks with Miami right now and we offered a 2nd and a 6th. The Eagles, Cowboys and Giants all called them today too so if you can wait a little while until you release this to the public I'd appreciate it. We don't want to tip our hand.
JLC: Sure, no problem.
Bottom line is, a little jealous and vindictive weasel like yourself wouldn't be able to help himself. But it's Vinny who can't be trusted. You're a joke and your media brethren share that same feeling.

Update
I just spoke with one of my sources whom has informed me that baby Jasno woke up grumpy again. Seems the nursemaids missed the sand in his mangina. Seems that was cleaned out, he was given another warm bottle, passed gas and then went back to sleepy time.
Posted by: The Truth | July 21, 2008 11:41 PM
hey don't go to vinnie for the facts...let the dude disemble...NFL was built on bad information. That's the Post's job, not his.
Posted by: Fletch76 | July 22, 2008 12:07 AM
I usually agree with Jason, but today this is just bitterness. You know full well why he said what he said. It seems it worked too. Why give a team that wanted JT a shot to up the deal? If you took him at his word and stopped your work there, then that was your fault. If you know what comes out is probably false anyways, then go find your info elsewhere. If it came out of his mouth, he would be shooting himself in the foot. No matter how unlikely that what he said influenced a team, he'd be a fool not to try. You just gave a bunch of people a reason to cheer for Vinny.
Posted by: Cliff | July 22, 2008 12:26 AM
What do you expect from a suck up to the dirt bag owner? I wonder why Jason didn't CALL OUT Vinny on his devious methods back in 2005 and forward? Vinny has so much baggage it gives the Redskins a bad reputation and makes enimies with other GM's and owners. The Redskins front office is a laughing stock of football AND NOT TO BE TRUSTED!!!! GREAT JOB JASON__INTEGRITY MEANS A LOT IN ALL BUSINESS AND PRO FOOTBALL IS A BUSINESS!!!!

YOu want a GM to do your own job?

"DID EAGLES MAKE A RUN AT TAYLOR?
Posted by Mike Florio on July 21, 2008, 7:53 p.m.
Anthony Gargano of WIP radio in Philadelphia said on Monday that the Eagles made a late run at acquiring defensive end Jason Taylor from the Dolphins.
Also on Monday, Eagles coach Andy Reid didn't address of the question of whether his team tried to land Taylor. But Reid hinted that he had some inside information, saying "I knew [Bill Parcells] was trying to get rid of him."

Redskins Training Camp: Day 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Keim
WarpathInsiders.com Jul 21, 2008
John Keim reports on his observations from the Redskins' second day of Training Camp under Jim Zorn. John touches on a lot of different subjects including some lighter sides of the players and coaches.
Thoughts and observations:
...Vinny Cerrato angered members of the media when he, um, told less than the truth about the Jason Taylor situation. At 5 p.m. Sunday, Cerrato said he hadn't talked to the Dolphins and denied anything was imminent. A little more than an hour later the trade was finalized. And a day later he told several outlets that he had talked to Bill Parcells three times during the afternoon practice.
There's two things here: one, it's nothing new; two, it'll always happen. Just the way it is.

What a friggin waste of a loser!
Posted by: Rosie O'Canfora's Mother | July 22, 2008 3:46 AM
And, more to the point, most pros in the sports business learned long ago how to say - "No comment," or "Hey, we're working on things to make our team better and we'll let you know if we complete something."
ROFL yea JLC and most journalist can spell and form grammatically correct sentences!!!!
"But most people are more astute that this,"
YOU FARGIN HYPOCRITICAL LOSER!!

The more Vinny Cerrato lies to the likes of Peter King and Rosie O'Canfora the more my love grows for him!

Jlc,
Instead of reporting the story you have tried to become the story. Stop crying like a little biotch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: SPMac | July 22, 2008 7:47 AM
If he's lying to JLC, he is in effect lying to all of us. I personally don't like being lied to... especially when I plop down a huge wad of money every year for my season tix. I realize that even the almighty and all holy Joe Gibs was frequently broke a commandment or two when it came to draft time... Now, I'm glad that Vinnie did the deal, but don't blatently lie to me especially when nobody believes a word of what you're saying to start with.
Posted by: Boo | July 22, 2008 8:04 AM
I guess Joe Gibbs was a liar too... or was he just practicing the same strategy that used to have him putting covers over the fences in PA at training camp to keep people from knowing what was coming til it happened?
What would you have done if he had told you yes? You, in your infinite wisdom, would have gotten on your phone and it would have been on the paper's site before 10 minutes went past.
The Eagles and Giants who were in the mix and trying to, from other reports that you don't mention, drive the price up and screw the Skins.
Yep - let's let the opponents who are trying to step in and play havoc with your emergency plans know what is going on.
There are other teams who routinely deny things right up until they happen... probably 31 of them.
Keep reporting the news and keep your personal opinions out of it - that is where this goes so wrong.
Posted by: Rich | July 22, 2008 10:20 AM
Most of you guys are overlooking something really obvious. If Cerrato didn't want to tip his hand all he had to say, when asked about Taylor was "No Comment" or "I don't talk about deals until after they're done".
He didn't have to lie. Yet he did.
It says quite a bit about his character and how will deal with members of the local media who aren't getting a paycheck from the team.
Posted by: Jimmie | July 22, 2008 10:32 AM

The Extreme Skins sound like dunces. Don't they know that when Vinny lies to JLC, he's actually lying to all of them. JLC writes for the public. Vinny is a snake and his boss is a midget.
Posted by: UMD's Burning Couch | July 22, 2008 1:30 PM
Either Get on good terms with Vinnie or Quit reporting on the Redskins. You have no inside information because you are on the outside looking in through locked doors
Posted by: Alligator Jack | July 22, 2008 3:32 PM
So an exec in attempting to acquire a prized player lies to the media so they don't kibosh the deal and a leak leads to a bidding war against other teams???
Will wonders never cease...
Go right ahead and lie to th media Cerrato....all they do is use the REDSKINS name in any news story to garner attention anyway.
Posted by: GoonieGooGoo | July 22, 2008 4:48 PM
IT CRACKS ME UP HOW THE MEDIA FEELS THEY'RE PRIVILAGED AND SHOULD BE PRIVILAGED TO HAVE ANY AND ALL INFORMATION AVAILABLE. THIS POST SOUNDS TO ME LIKE A DISGRUNTLED REPORTER WHO IS POUTING BECAUSE HE DIDN'T GET THE SCOOP FIRST! I FOR ONE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THE VINNY AND DANNY BASHING. LET'S FACE IT, DISGRUNTLED REPORTERS ARE NEVER GOING TO GIVE THE LOVE TO DANNY AND VINNY!
Posted by: Allskins | July 22, 2008 4:52 PM
Instead of saying "No comment" or "We can't confirm anything." Cerrato decides to lie to local reporters like a snake.
Extremeskinners are used to being lied to.

Go Vinny? Is that what I read?
Is any Redskins fan so contemptuous of the media that he roots for a lying GM at the expense of a reporter? Remember this: When Cerrato was lying to Jason, he was lying to you, too. For weeks and weeks, he has said there was nothing going on. As a result, you, the fan, were misinformed. And you're happy about that? Please get a grip.
Posted by: Rob Daniels | July 22, 2008 8:51 PM

GET OVER IT!!!!! vinny has a job to do, and it DOES NOT include giving you, me or esp. whiney JLC any direct info until hes able too. As long as he is not lying about things that are actually gonna hurt the team, I DONT GIVE A SH!T. OH and by the way mr jlc, why do my other post keep disappearing? did i strike a nerve? there wasnt any profanity, or personal attacks, hmmmmm. seems to me like your trying to distort the REAL purpose of a blog. let me start crying now the same way you do when you dont get your way. wah wah waaaaah
