Darrell Green vs. Ken Houston

Advantage: Green

Ken Houston was a spectacular safety. Possibly the greatest in Redskins franchise history. Still, he only spent half his career in Washington. Darrell Green holds the record for the longest tenure with the team, and he was productive every year. Both players are legends of the game and deserve credit. Unfortunately, only one can be chosen, and the one here is Darrell Green.

Ken Houston will always be remembered for one of the greatest defensive plays in Redskin history. No one who saw it will ever forget his seconds left, fourth quarter, goal line stop of Dallas running back, Walt Garrison, sealing a skins victory.

Kenny Houston played many season (appropriatly named huh?) for the Houston Oilers. He was so good that in 1971 he was the Houston Oiler leading scorer despite not even being an offensive player!

Yes I remember the Walt Garrison tackle, I am sure old Walt would rather forget that play. Garrison was the Cowboy's "go to" back in short yardage situations, kind of like Mike Alstot is for the Bucs. That Houston was able to stop him was a huge shock.

I am glad Kenny is in the Hall Of Fame....it is well deserved.

This is a stupid match up. Two different types of players in two different positions. Both of these players are amongst the NFL's elites at their positions! Deion Sanders couldn't hold Darrell Green's jockstrap. I can only think of maybe Ronnie Lott as being comparable to Ken Houston. Maybe Night Train Lane, also......But, you can't try to compare these two....They're immortals!

It's simple. Both were great. Darrell "10 Speed" was more feared and served the Skins for a longer period of time. He also had more electifing palys than did Kenny. It is not hard to choose but Darrell is da'man.

Just wanna weigh-in that Darrell should get the vote but that Garrison tackle was the cap to one of the most exciting Dallas games I've ever seen. I think I was about 9 years old and I remember running around the house yelling, "he stopped him, he stopped him!!"

It's hard to compare the two because Green was a corner,Houston a safety.I think Houston was just a better football player, though.Everyone knows about Green's amazing ability as a punt returner, but few recall that, due to injuries, the Redskins had Houston return punts against the Cowboys in a game in 1974.How did he do?He returned one for a touchdown. So Houston had a TD return in the regular season,Green did not. Also,Houston had the most returns for TDs on inteceptions for many years.

Deon Sanders couldn't hold Darrell Green's jockstrap? Now that's laughable. Green had amazing recovery speed, like Sanders, but physically there's no contest. Gree was a midget. He couldn't stop a receiver the size of Harold Carmichael. Sanders shut down entire passing offenses. Ask Brett Favre when he tried to prove he wasn't afraid of Sanders what happened. Deion took it 80 yards for a TD (Dallas still lost badly). No need to pump up Green by spitting on Sanders. As for Kenny Houston, he was as complete as a complete player can be. Its like comparing a .357 magnum and a .44. What's the difference, they both blow you away.
