Microsoft Re-Releases Internet Explorer Patch
Microsoft today re-released a patch it originally issued earlier this month to plug security holes in its Internet Explorer Web browser.
Redmond had planned to re-release the patch earlier this week, which has caused periodic crashes for IE installations on Windows 2000 computers and on machines running Windows XP Service Pack 1. But security experts at eEye Digital Security discovered that crashes resulting from the bad patch could actually be exploited by attackers to install malicious software, and Microsoft was forced to delay the re-release. Microsoft's revised securty bulletin explains this in a bit more detail.
This revised update is only for Windows users who are running IE with Service Pack 1. Not sure what version you have installed? Open up IE, go to the "Help" menu and choose "About Internet Explorer." Affected users can download the patch directly from here, or visit Microsoft Update.

Oooo! Oooo! Brian misspelled the word "security" in the 4th link. Sloppy journalism. No regard for the truth. Write the Ombudsman, phone his bosses, demand that he resign!

>Windows XP Service Pack 1<
If memory serves, Microsoft support for SP1 ends in October. This would be a good time to "bite the bullet" and upgrade to SP2.
BTW, before upgrading to SP2, I had to download some HP-specific patches from HP's web site.

I attempted to run the windows update in response to your article of 24 Aug on the rerelease of the patch and I got nowhere.
I got an error message: 0x80072EE2 when
Windows Update was looking for applicable
updates for my system. I am up-to-date on all windows updates for my system. First time for me that I couldn't get windows update to run.
Any suggestions?

h3: Who uses IE?
Unfortunately, most businesses won't let employees install Firefox or any other browser on their work PCs. And there are some intranet sites that are designed for IE only.

You may just want to restart, and then visit WU again (remember this patch is only needed if you're running IE SP1).

You ignored the fact that Windows 2000 users need to be installing this fix - and it's still in service.

Have you had users complaining about an NTAUTHORITY/SHUTDOWN message? This automatic shutdown message says the system cannot access a Windows "services.exe" file. I've talked with several techs, and no one knows how to fix the problem. While you can fool the shutdown by changing the year on the computer clock, most programs then do not respond. Any suggestions?
