House Approves Anti-Caller ID Spoofing Bill

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved legislation that would make it a crime for someone to fake their phone's outgoing Caller ID information for nefarious purposes.

The "Truth in Caller ID Act of 2007" would make it "unlawful for any person within the United States, in connection with any telecommunications service or VOIP service, to cause any caller identification service to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller identification information with the intent to defraud or cause harm."

The House passed a similar bill in April, but the Senate has yet to act on it. This bill will also now head to the Senate. I touched on some of the security and consumer fraud problems introduced by Caller ID spoofing in a piece back in April.

Neither bill would do anything to prevent people from blocking their Caller ID information from being displayed, such as when the Caller ID readout displays "Blocked," or "Unknown Number."

Too bad, it would be really handy for computer/modem security. Maybe I am just having 90s flashbacks, but I remember before spyware there were porn dialers. Maybe I read that somewhere, yeah, that's it.

Just as people can block their out going caller ID information, users can also have their phones refuse those incoming calls that have been blocked - checks and balances.

Wow! That's what I get for having a slow internet connection - multiple posts!

Of course, nothing in this bill requires telemarketers or those bloody poll takers or political campaign "demon dialers" to provide accurate CallerID data...or deal with the junk fax problem by requiring a valid return number header on every fax.

Yet another useless bill that fixes the symptom, not the problem.

We have a solution that goes further than caller ID, we actually verify & validate ANI (the billing telephone number) used to make that call so you know for sure who called.

Our website is:
