Kerry Isn't Giving Up
It's looking more likely that Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) could get an ounce of revenge against the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth group that helped ruin his 2006 presidential quest. Sources tell the Sleuth that Swift Boat donor Sam Fox's nomination to be ambassador to Belgium is in real jeopardy.
As readers may recall, Kerry got a rare opportunity to tussle with Fox during the nominee's confirmation hearing last month in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.http://blog.washingtonpost.com/sleuth/2007/02/staring_adversity_in_the_face.html).
Fox is a major Republican contributor who qualified as a "Bush Ranger." In 2000 and 2002, back in the day when soft money was still allowed, he gave $495,000 to the Republican National Committee in soft money alone.
Fox, who donated $50,000 toward the Swifties' ad campaign to smear Kerry's Vietnam record, has now submitted answers to several written questions Kerry posed to the nominee to follow up on last month's hearing at which Kerry was visibly seething with frustration. The written questions and answers were obtained by the Sleuth.
Even after receiving Fox's written responses, Kerry feels he still hasn't gotten many answers. Take, for example, question No. 3.
Kerry asked Fox: "Please identify any individual or organization who contacted you, or whom you contacted, with respect to making a donation to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth."
Fox's answer: "I don't recall."
Or take Question No. 5. Kerry asked Fox, "Did you receive any acknowledgement or thank you for your contribution to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth? If so, from whom?"
Fox replied, "To the best of my knowledge I have never received any acknowledgement or thank you for my contribution to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth."
But Fox re-submitted his answer later stating that "after my assistant checked my records, we found the attached acknowledgement of my contribution." The thank-you letter, from the treasurer of the Swift Boat campaign, said, "The only way we can get the truth out about John Kerry is with the help of Americans such as you."
Fox continued to insist in his written answers, as in his answers before the Foreign Relations Committee, that he had no clue that his money would be used specifically to trash Kerry. When asked if he knew his money would go toward attack ads, he said, "I was aware that SBVT aired TV ads and that the content of such ads dealt with Senator Kerry."
Suffice it to say, Kerry still feels dissed by Fox. As Kerry spokesman Vince Morris told us, "During the hearing Senator Kerry asked Sam Fox a handful of pretty basic questions about his actions and judgment and is looking forward to hearing his replies."
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee still has not scheduled a vote on Fox's nomination. A senior Democratic aide on the committee tells the Sleuth that the nomination is in real trouble and suggested Democrats may sink it both to show support for Kerry and teach a moral lesson about the personal destruction wrought by of independent 527 groups such as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
"I can tell you people are going to be very sensitive to Senator Kerry," the aide said, adding that killing Fox's ambassadorial nomination may be the strong lesson that's needed in order to get "this level of shame" out of politics. "This is not a bad remedy," the aide said.

Isn't is a shame that elected officials get to use their positions on committees to achieve their own personal agenda? Mr Kerry needs to get over the fact that he lost and get on with his life.

Who said a man like this one cannot sink beyond the lowest border of ignorance?
Jeez!

Both parties fully engage in the practice of appointing ambassadors on the basis of partisan contributions. This is bad enough, but shouldn't we at least draw a line against rewarding those who finance anonymous smear campaigns?

The presidential election was in 2004, not 2006, as mistakenly reported here.

I notice republicans always telling democrats to get over something when its to their hypocritical advantage.when will you get over the fact that we have presidents in this country who suppose to work for all americans and not appointed kings that can lie and do whatever sleezeball thing he wants in the cause of special interest groups but in our name with our military and with our tax AND social security dollars. tell your king to stop sending our soc. sec. money to iraq so his friends can steal it. YOU REPUBLICANS WHO STILL SUPPORT THIS MAN ARE TRAITORS TO THE GREAT U.S.A. tell him to close the border too!!!in annapolis we have a60% increase in illegals since he has been in office. name one thing he has done to help the working class man?I just got laid off in this great economy you say he has got going!!!!

Kerry is SUUUCH a loser!
Not content with shooting himself in the foot in 2004, he is now trying to re-open the wound and pour salt into it!
Does it burn, John? Well, so will you!

Perhaps Kerry would approve Fox's appointment as Ambassador to the North Pole, provided he supplied his own scuba gear.

Please explain to me what any of Kerry's questions have to do with regarding an ambassadorship other than his case of sour grapes? Once a pompous blowhard, always a pompous blowhard.

Swiftboat those lazy Unarmored Humvee Amputees sitting in sewage in Walter Reed. They said that they had to scrounge for scrap metal at the local garbage dump to bolt or glue onto their unarmored humvees- Thats a national security secret!! just like the White House visitors records! And Swiftboat that Tammy Duckworth too. How dare she ask the country to fund medical research for the troops! Doesnt she know how to make a sacrifice for her country. Swiftboat er good, Rove. Heh heh, heh, heh. Pass me that frog and that firecracker over there, heh hehe, heh heh. Wheres my Jack Daniels and my cocaine? Do I still have to go to those dry drunk Moonie meetings with Pastor Ted? Ambassadorships and no-bid contracts to all my Bush Pioneers! The same draft-dodger cronies who Swiftboat our troops are the same ones who get billions of treasury loot to drip sewage on our unarmored Humvee amputees lying paralyzed in bed who cant move out of the way of the Bush no-bid contractor shiit dripping from the ceiling. Heh heh, heh heh. Swiftboat em good! Heh heh.

If you let this guy become ambassador, then I will kill you Kerry. You did not fight back the last time a bunch of chicken hawks questioned your patriotism. If you let this guy become ambassador, then you are not fighting back this time either. If that happens, I will call you a loser

The phrase "I will kill you, Kerry" in an anonymous post. commenting on the Senator's opposition to making a major contributor to the Swift boaters' campaign an ambassador, was over the line. That post should never have seen the light of Internet day. Doesn't The Sleuth have a Delete button on her computer?

The senior Democrat staffer says they want use this to teach a 'moral lesson' about the destructive nature of 527 organizations. I wonder, are they interested in teaching a lesson about MoveOn.org as well or are they just upset about conservative 527's. What a bunch of hypocrits...

An ambassador represents a country in its most sensitive dealings. The personal reputation of a negotiator for fairness and personal integrity is vital. The more difficult the problem, the more critical it is that the ambassador be perceived as personally credible--trustworthy and well-informed.
If -- IF -- you agree that the Swift Boat attacks on Kerry were factually unsound and IF you believe that the Sam Fox understood how his money would be used, then it is hard to see how Fox can be useful as an ambassador.
The power politics might be about Republicans and Democrats but underlying them is the fundamental need for competent representation.

Isn't this called intimidation? Doesn't it go against the right of free speech? Doesn't every citizen of the United States have have a right to contribute to any legal organization in this country without having a personal vendetta played out against them even those who must go before a Senate committee to get a job? Isn't there a law against such an abuse of power?

Did Kerry ever sue CSpan for running those old '70's tapes about him testifying before the Senate committe about how the US military cut off the ears of Vietnamese? NO WAIT, it was a MATTER OF PUBLIC RECORD. JOHN KERRY SAID THAT STUFF AND YOU LIBERALS ARE BELLYACHING OVER IT.
Wow, I am so surprised that Kerry is still whining and complaining about his loss in 2004. What a hypocrite!!! The Dems attack President Bush, wrapped up the selection of Kerry quickly in March 2004 and spent millions to undermine Bush for the next 8 months. It was anti-Bush votes not pro-Kerry votes that sunk his ship. Now with a new ballgame in 2008, few Democrats wanted a retread loser like Kerry to be the next Adlai Stevenson.
At least Al Gore could enter late in the game and have a chance.
Kerry, you lost, get over it.

It gets so tiring to hear the Republican mantra: "You lost, get over it!!!".
George W. Bush has "lost" the integrity, honor, respect, trustworthiness, etc.etc.etc of the United States.....and NO, WE "WON'T GET OVER IT"...!!!

I would never ever trust him again! He was in cohoots with the republican party. He was the decoy! Who as played his role exactly the way he was instructed by the Skull & Cross Bones! His pledged and sworn fraternity! I would trust Kerry to lead a country! He is weak! He proved it when he cried! He showed it more in his debates and in the fact that he is the same as the republican! Plus he is rich man! And he voted right along with the rest! He does deserve a second chance to set up the scenario for someone worst than Bush/Cheney!

Kerry is a mark! A mole! I wouldnt trust him to take my clothes to the cleaners! He is a phoney and he proved he was weak! Like most of the Democratic party! Who will be the one to speak out against the bs that accepted I believe because deep down no Caucasian amerikkkan wants to give up privilege! But the truth is...its not black & white as much as before....its the "have-not vs the have mores! Stop thinking white supremacy! The days of old are just that...OLD! With Globalization the world is clearly made up of more people of color! And Amerikkka is beginning to look the same way! And no white knight will be able to fix that!

The only ones whining here are the GOP propagandists and apologists. Waaah! I can't have my ambassadorship! Wahhh! Waaah!. Go change your diapers and grow up.

eliXelx...were you in Vietnam, or no, anywhere within 2000 miles of any combat zone?
Oh, wait, was cheney, bush, or rumsfeld? How about paul wolfowitz? Oh, no he was taking classes from this fascist neo-con Leo Strauss.
TempleofHypocracy...at what point exactly did MoveOn.org sponsor ads that made up extensive lies about soldiers who received medals in the field, and were actually IN RIVERS ON FLAT BOATS IN THE JUNGLES OF VIETNAM, and essentially belittle and degrade ALL American soldiers who received medals in the field as being a non-issue, and/or liars?
No, seriously...I'm waiting here...Actually, at what point was moveon.org even created? Oh, I know...it was the point at which everyone saw bush's complete ieptitude at fighting a war...planning a war..succeeding in a war. You plan a war with people like Tom Delay who doesn't know where military bases are in middle eastern countries? You shutout middle eastern experts paid by the US government, because they're not telling you what you wanna hear?
You people are living in a g*dd*mn different world, I swear.

Mr. Kerry needs to be strong and do what he thinks is right and reflects a firm persona.

There are certain things that are exempt from the phrase "GET OVER IT!" George W. Bush is one of them. He will be a black mark in American history forever. At least, if it is written correctly. Go John! You deserved better than to become a victim of such abominations perpetrated (and still ongoing) by this administration. Best of luck to you!

Only an opportunistic scheming phoney like Kerry could have lost to Bush in 2004. And he did.
Posted by: PJ | March 21, 2007 4:07 PM
It is not suprising to me to listen and read conservatives defend this man to beambassador. In the last six year conservatives have became defenders of lying and cheating politicians and have no remorse in doing so. Mr Kerry has earned the right to question this man and ALL the so-called hawks conservatives whom NEVER served in our armed forces and/or did everything to avoid serving, yet, question the services of those whom served. Bush, Chenney, Rumsfeld,Pearle,Gingrich,Rove, Gonzalez,Wolfzowich, did any of these clowns served anytime, even in the Boyscouts? They have no shame.
Posted by: Gus | March 21, 2007 9:59 PM
That Bush would even nominate this man to be an ambassador is an insult. Can he really not anticipate the response to his actions?
