Lieberman and Swiftie Donor, Bound by Admiration.... and Money

Quid pro quo, or no?

That's the question that came to mind when we found out that Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) made a guest appearance at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing last week to lobby for Sam Fox to become ambassador to Belgium. Why would Lieberman, who isn't even a member of the committee, show up at Fox's confirmation hearing to heap praise on the wealthy Republican donor?

Lieberman showed up early to the hearing - more than an hour before Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass), who is a member of the committee, calmly waltzed in and grilled Fox on why he helped bankroll the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth smear campaign against Kerry in 2004 - and said the following:

"Sam Fox represents what America is all about and that's why he will be, when confirmed, an extraordinary ambassador."

If America is all about giving hefty campaign cash to Joe Lieberman, then Sam Fox certainly embodies that spirit.

According to a story in the Hartford Courant, Fox and his wife each gave a $10,500 donation to Lieberman's Senate campaign against Democrat Ned Lamont on the day after the 2006 election.

Hmmm, does that explain why Lieberman went out of his way to make a special appearance before a committee to which he doesn't belong to advocate for the donor? 'Course not, Lieberman campaign spokesman Marshall Wittmann explains.

"Senator Lieberman supports Mr. Fox's nomination because he is impressed with his life story, his credentials and the strong bipartisan support that he has received from the people who know him best in Missouri," Wittmann tells the Sleuth.

Lieberman himself praised Fox at the hearing this way: "A child of immigrants born in very modest means just had the dream that in America, if you work hard and play by the rules, you can make it."

Fox, a wealthy St. Louis businessman, told the Courant's David Lightman that he "gained great respect for Sen. Lieberman during his run for the vice presidency in 2000" and that "over the years my respect and admiration grew."

Unfortunately for us facial reaction spotters, Kerry hadn't entered the room yet when Lieberman was lavishing praise on Fox. And Kerry's office declined comment when we asked today what the Swift Booted Senator thought of Lieberman's pro-Fox soliloquy.

But it didn't sit well with at least one Democrat on the panel. An aide to one of the Democratic senators who sits on the foreign relations panel, bemoaned "Lieberman's kissy-kiss with Sam Fox."

Lieberman is too ashame to become a Republican, and has none of the social convictions associated with the Democratic Party. nevertheless, for the sake of clouded clarity, it is about time he follows part of his heart and join the Republican Party.

Nobody will care about Lieberman once he officially becomes the Republican he's always been in his heart. This sort of thing won't get anyone's attention. He's really turned out to be a major sleaze, hasn't he? I can't wait til 2008 when the Dems can ditch him.

Posted by: Sagacity | March 9, 2007 12:47 PM

Wow. Joe Lieberman sang the praises of a slimy Republican and got a chance to stick a(nother) knife in John Kerry's back.

Shocking.

I'll say this for him, it wasn't about the money. It's all about ego with Holy Joe.

As a non-American who follows US politics closely I have tried to fathom the strange inconsistencies of Lieberman's policy positions especially on Iraq. The only logical conclusion I can reach is that like some others who have positions of influence in Washington he is a front man for the AIPAC lobby whose objectives he consistently espouses

To Joe Lieberman, politics is a garden. And he is the hoe! What a pathetic dude!

Sam Fox helped fund the Swiftboating of John Kerry, and Robert Gibbs, who is Barack Obama's campaign manager, helped fund the swiftboating of Howard Dean.

What is wrong with this picture?

Excellent point Matt K.

The simple answer is there is too much wrong with this picture to enumerate. We are in deep deep trouble in this country and we're not going to get out of it by throwing feces at each other. That's how we got here.

That being said, I still want it known it's the Republican's fault we're here. ;-)

Joe Lieberman has become a slimey politician following his loss in hie primary, and his alliance to the Swift Boaters is the ultimate move to put him in the Hall of Shame, but the majority of the GOP have no shame. But, go ahead, send this slimeball to Belgium and see the friendly response he'll get. But remember, the citizens of Europe are more savy than our citizens, they actually read and reason.

I find it somewhat ironic, in the comments above, that all these great thinkers can not even put a sentence together. Sen. Joe is one of the few J.F.K. Democrats left in office. He isn't leaving the party the party is leaving him and me.

Will the 2008 elections not come soon enough? If my stomach could just hold out a little longer... then this horrific dream will start to end at long last.

Posted by: larry | March 10, 2007 10:37 AM

You liberals get so offended when one of a defecting Democrat actually thinks for himself and leaves the cult- unlike the current morons: Chappaquidick Teddy, Lying Flip Flopper Jean Francois Kerry, and the ultimate hypocrite- Billary Clinton. The Republicans will gladly welcome Senator Lieberman, a man who has a quality liberals don't have-- ethics.

Posted by: dla | March 10, 2007 11:02 AM

The major point here I argue is that the such "thugs of intellect" (my term) as Swiftboat Veterans for Truth illegal group, their unconscionable methods and theirself-evident lack of morals and ethics applied to slandering idividual candidates and officeholders can destroy this nation's elective process completely.
Misuse of opinion in place of attested fact, subjective preferences in place of standards-based evaluations and fantasized beliefs replacing scientific proofs are NOT thought, not acceptable rhetoric under American law, and not part of any rational choice of responsible leaders in a nation where rights and votes belong to responsible individual deciders.
Mr. Lieberman cannot I argue be judged by his mistakes reone issue--the needless and mystically-motivated re-invasion of Iraq nor his failure to grasp that our baltle with al Queda's apologists and its mass-murderers is a war of concepts, one which therefore cannot be won by military weapons. But his lack of judgment re Mr. Fox's character, record and capabilities now brings into serious question his judgment, his political beliefs and his trustworthiness once again.
Isn't it time we who are not pseudo-religious right-wing of left-wing unAmericans of either party started asking about Sen. Lieberman--and the rest of major candidates in this country--the hard questions about what they actually believe, have done and ethically stand for? If we cannot stop our philosophically incompetent news-twisting corporate moguls from destroying the elective process through trivilaization, speculation about polls and misrepresentations of candidates' realities, we cannot have any serious form of election.
And the Joe Liebermans will never get justice any more than the voters will, whatever that justice is. It is not true that people always get "the government they deserve". It is hwever I assert always true that the people of any country deserve the government they vote to keep having--and the long-term politicans they do not dismiss for misconduct, mental shortcomings nor illicit behaviors.

Robert C. is factually dishonest. John Kerry refuses to release the records that will prove his war record to be a figment of his own imagination...one that he presented in his own after-action reports. Aside from those distortions, his treatment of the men serving in country, after he was safe at home, was unforgiveable. He will go down in history as one of the worse Democrats ever....Along with the senior senator from Mass. What is wrong with the water up there?

Posted by: William S. | March 10, 2007 5:24 PM

The NYTimes on March 7 reports that BARAK OBAMA received money from Jared Abbruzzese who was contributor to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, and whose other contrubtions were exclusively to the GOP.

Tejas and people associated with it were major donors to Mr. Obama's political committees, having raised more than $150,000 since 2004. The company's chairman, John J. Gorman, has held fund-raisers for the senator in Austin, Tex., and arranged for him to use a private plane for several political events in 2005. Mr. Gorman declined to comment.

It surprises me that some Democrats in Connecticut supported Lieberman in last years election. Of course, the Republicans wanted him in as he has become a Bush sycophant.
Mr. Lieberman, I am very much afraid, has become a bitter old man, perhaps as a result of his having been rejected by the Democratic Party as their presidential candidate in 2004. Perhaps he thought he was entitled to it.
Someone neglected to tell him that we do not usually elect "wimps" to the presidency, although we have not done too well the last two times out.
We can only hope that when his current term comes to a close the people of Connecticut will retire him, and none too gracefully. The country would be well served by getting rid of theis "whiner." The Democrats in Connecticut would do us all a great favor.
The Democratic Party is stuck with another "Zell Miller", the paragon of arrogance and ignorance, more concerned with himself than with what is best for the American people.

Lieberman is lead too much by his religion. He is a liberal when it comes to social issues, that is why he is applauded among supporting Dems. But he is a blind hawk over Iraq. Any war against any Arab is seen as good for Isreal. It really isn't but many blindly pro Isreal believe so.
Lieberman is also being taken for a sucker. Do you think for one minute the Republican supporters want his whole agenda to succeed? He is being used to hype their war.
Like so many weak people he is doing what it takes to keep himself in power. Not doing what is right.

I cheered when Al Gore selected Joe Leiberman as his running mate. I have since watched in surprise, starting with his friendly debate with Dick Cheney. His rush to seek the presidential nomination without so much as a tip of the hat to Al Gore. His strong support of George Bush and the Iraq war. His loss in the primary in Connecticut and then running as an Independent against the Democratic nominee. Now with his endorsement of Sam Fox to be an ambassador to Belgium. As the late Joseph Walsh of the Army/Mc Carthy hearings said "Have You No Shame?" to Joe Mc Carthy I say to Mr. Lieberman "Have You No Shame?"

Posted by: John P. Mc Donald | March 12, 2007 1:19 PM

We all now know the real Sen. Lieberman--one of Bush's staunchest neocons who led us into a pre-emptive war in Iraq based on lies. I wonder how he can sleep at night when thinking about our wounded and killed soldiers and their families. But neocons do not care about our soldiers fighting a failed war because no one in their families go to war; they just send other people's children, husbands, and wives to war. Lieberman is just like another chicken hawk whom we know so well--five-time deferment Cheney who said that he had better things to do than go to Viet Nam.

TO DIA--I know you can't be serious with your absurd statements. Liberals have no ethics and I suppose conservatives do. Then your a perfect example of somebody who watches to much FOX NEWS then runs around saying really stupid stuff thinking your really well-informed. Boy thats pitiful.

Posted by: Ed Feeney | March 12, 2007 2:37 PM

TO WILLIAM S--Im sorry you didn't get the news. Im talking about the news that finally made it to the surface. That the Swifties instead of being Patriots turned out to be a bunch of back-stabbin, fabricatin scumbags. Its fact that anyone who wa close to the action backs Kerrys version. Its true that Kerrys political actions at home made him alot of enemies. Especially Nixon who appointed that head Swifty to dig up dirt on Kerry because of his dissent. Its to bad you can't tell political desperation from the truth. As for the Senator from Mass why don't you guys give it a rest. You don't see us digging up more dirt on Strom Thurmond and a host of other of your heroes.

Posted by: Ed Feeney | March 12, 2007 3:08 PM

I havn't seen a scumbag like Lieberman since the likes of Zell Miller.

Posted by: Ed Feeney | March 12, 2007 4:23 PM

everyone here that thinks they are a republican and and a supporter of "free markets" and the usual republican rethoric which is in no way a reality I challenge you to do research. Look at Noam Chomsky's writings about imperialism and the aquesence of both parties to private wealth. "free market fantasies" are a reality. I challenge you all to put your ideas to a rigerous investigation. Chomsky on the left, go through his popular works, and try to find anyone who can stand up to the truth he speaks, or rather it is analysis of the lies we live with... remember reagan the contras, nicaragua the indictment by the world court against the US for "International Terrorism" concerning the nicaragua issue. The bishops murdered by the regan admin. for promoting socialist activism, over throwing democratically elected leftest governments because they don't serve our economic standards- both in Latin America. Back door funding of the massacre of those indigenous people in East Timor by our administration-for similar reasons to the above example, our economic interest- meaning our economic superiority and dominion staying in tact. Clinton was no better in that he pushed NAFTA through, barely gave the union's lawyers time to estimate the impact on our labor, and this paper as well the NYT didnt give the official union stance, rahter they praised NAFTA, while those with any sense and concern about the state of our labor were silenced.

Joe Lieberman is a great American, and a Democrat in the tradition of Harry Truman, John Kennedy, and Henry "Scoop" Jackson. That Democrat Party doesn't exist anymore, it has been taken over by the far-left pacifists. Senator Lieberman is fooling himself if he thinks there is anything he can do to revive his party -- the Democrat Party is hopeless and cannot be reformed. It must be destroyed to make way for a responsible center-left party. Senator Lieberman needs to find a way to create that new center-left party... he might even be able to peel off some discontented Republicans.

Has anyone done a poll in Conn. recently? It would be interesting to find out how the people in that state think now that they've really seen Joe L. in action. He is so pathetic.

Don't you think it is about time to quit crying over the SWIFTIES. No matter how hard you try to do the Josef Goebbels routine, on the Swifties, they were the ones telling the truth. Is it too hard to admit John Kerry parlayed some faulty memory into a neat position.
It is sad that the one truthful event of the 2004 election (on either side) is the one that gives you lock step lefties the most indigestion.
