At Last, Kucinich Begins His Quest for Impeachment
He finally did it!

After delaying, rescheduling, postponing yet again, and then re-rescheduling, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) finally held a news conference late today launching his Quixotic quest to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney.
Accompanied by his red-headed, statuesque bride and a handful of aides, Kucinich approached a set of microphones at an outdoor news conference on Capitol Hill and somberly began reciting from the Declaration of Independence. "We hold these truths to be self-evident..."
A dark-horse Democratic candidate for president whose name is usually accompanied by an asterisk in the polls, Kucinich introduced a House resolution "impeaching Richard B. Cheney, vice president of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors" -- mainly for allegedly dragging America into war with Iraq "under false pretenses."
Why is Kucinich solely blaming Cheney and not both the vice president and the commander in chief? Because "if we started with Bush" and he actually got impeached, "Mr. Cheney would then become president," Kucinich replied.
Asked by one of a handful of reporters who covered the news conference whether any other members of Congress have signed on to his impeachment proposal, Kucinich explained that he just sent the "weighty" proposal today for all to review.
"So at this point you stand alone?" the reporter asked.
"No," Kucinich said, he stands with "millions of Americans" who have written to their state and federal officials demanding action against the Bush administration.
"I do not stand alone. I have multitudes of people [supporting] me," he said.
Kucinich introduced three articles of impeachment against Cheney: The first accusing the vice president of deceiving the country by "fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify" an invasion of Iraq; the second accusing him of "purposefully" manipulating intelligence to Congress and the American public about a relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda "despite all evidence to the contrary;" and the third for "threaten[ing] aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States."
In a synopsis, Kucinich wrote, "In all of this, Vice President Richard B. Cheney has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as Vice President, and subversive of constitutional government, to the prejudice of the cause of law and justice and the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore Richard B. Cheney, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office."
You can read all of the articles yourself on Kucinich's Web site, as well as here: Synopsis | Text of Resolution | Letter to Cheney.
After scrapping plans to introduce articles of impeachment against Cheney last week in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting rampage, Kucinich rescheduled his announcement for noon ET today. But in what his supporters might call a random act of kindness, he postponed after news reports said Cheney had to make an unexpected visit to his doctor Tuesday morning to have the blood clot in his leg checked.
As The Sleuth noted earlier, Cheney looked just fine later in the day when he made an extraordinarily rare appearance before the TV cameras following the Senate Republicans' weekly luncheon and blasted Senate Democrats for their position on the Iraq war.
Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride told The Sleuth that the vice president isn't giving Kucinich's impeachment plan a second thought. "The vice president is focused on doing the job the American people elected him to do."
A Republican strategist close to the vice president, meanwhile, quipped that Kucinich's strategy is to "try to go from a quarter of a percentage point to a full percentage point" in the presidential polls. (Or maybe from one-one hundredth of a percentage point to one-tenth...)
We'll be watching the polls in the coming days, as Kucinich plans to hold another news conference (barring any Cheney medical issues) at noon ET tomorrow.

it's about time. the days of unchecked behavior on the part of dick cheney need to come to an end. whether kucinich has a viable presidential run is beside the point. the people are fed up with this administration and i applaud him for taking action.

He can make a point here....sorry Conservatives but he has a point....Kucinich introduced three articles of impeachment against Cheney: The first accusing the vice president of deceiving the country by "fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify" an invasion of Iraq; the second accusing him of "purposefully" manipulating intelligence to Congress and the American public about a relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda "despite all evidence to the contrary;" and the third for "threaten[ing] aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States."

Let's lose both of them before their time is up. I'd like to see Nancy Pelosi serve at least a few months as America's first woman president.

I remember when the first whispers of "impeachment" started circulating during Clinton's administration. Not many "serious" people spoke the word, much less believed anything would come of it. Now some people confidently dismiss Kucinish's proposal as "quixotic." I wonder if they are ignorant of history, or just scared of history repeating itself?

The U.S. mainstream press may find all this talk lighthearted and humorous, the idea of holding Cheney and Bush accountable for perpetrating the most horrific strategic blunder in the history of this country (or 2nd most horrific if you want to consider slavery). But many Americans do not find the issue amusing. The slaughter continues in Iraq and the Bush Administration counts on the press to back their play. Not all the warmongers reside at the White House.

Finally! Now we need the pollsters and the MSM to ask the question on impeachment on a daily basis until it happens. But I am afraid the corporate media will never bring this up because they are afraid of what they will find. America overwhelmingly will vote for impeachment!

This little mouse has only a few problems...every big time Dem on capitol hill insisted Saddam had weapons of mass destruction long before Mr Cheney was elected. Second, the terrorist were all over Iraq and Saddam offered $25,000 for anyone(besides himself of course) to go blow himself up to kill Jews. Third, the Dems had every line of intelligence the President & VP had before the voted for the war. If you want to totally ignore the truth to satisfy your rage over actually losing elections, then you may have case. Otherwise impeachment hearings would wind up as a massive embarrasement to the lefties like Kucinic.

Today is a great day.
Mr. Kucinich is a man of unimpeachable conscience and integrity.
I hope our members of Congress and the Senate will wake up to the call. Cheney actively promoted lies about Iraq, promotes torture against domestic and international law, and is the greatest threat to our Constitution and world peace.
Cheney MUST be removed from office ASAP. The world cannot wait.

Once again Mary Ann Akers misses the point and "reports" nothing but a glimpse into her own ignorance. I cannot understand why with such a caliber of excellent (and legitimate) journalists, the Washington Post continues to employ her. Can someone respond, including Ms. Akers, with information on who she knows in HR there -- or higher?

Skip the attitude and just write the facts and you would have had a decent article. Some people in Washington seem to think it is just an intellectual exercise to start a war that has caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians,(believe it or not), and brought the US to the brink of moral and fiscal bankruptcy. Mince and parse words all you want, you don't have to worry about sudden violent death much, do you?

As a longtime Kucinich supporter I always wince when some reporter takes a swing at his sad little numbers in the polls. This time I'm sorry for the reporter... if this lionhearted gesture from a truly bright, entertaining and free-thinking congressman on behalf of legions of Americans provokes only a sneer, then you've lost your touch. Period.
Posted by: Molly | April 24, 2007 09:03 PM
I'm not sure I understand why this post takes such a flip tone. There is evidence to suggest that the administration knowingly deceived the public in its rush to war, or that it put American and Iraqi lives at risk in a grossly negligent manner. Perhaps it did no such thing. But, if it did, action is surely appropriate. It is the ridicule implicit in coverage like the Post's that leaves Kucinich near the bottom of the polls, not the sensible policy proposals he repeatedly offers. That hardly means the Post has any obligation to agree with him: may the better argument win. But at least he deserves some respect.

Mister Kucinich is a hero. It got about time that the American people learn the true nature of Cheney. Cheney should be arrested and removed immediately. Congress should call for early presidential elections and arrest Bush and his father as well. The American people stands firmly behind the Democratic government. LET THIS GAME CONTINUE !!

Posted by: Jack13 | April 24, 2007 09:22 PM
Lea Anne McBride is not right. The American people did not vote for Dick Cheney, President Bush did. I doubt that anything will come out of these articles of impeachment, but something needs to be done.
Posted by: RR | April 24, 2007 09:24 PM
Cheney has an 11% approval rating and the MSM thinks Kucinich is standing alone on impeaching the vice president. Perhaps the MSM will wake up to the will of people when their approval rating joins Cheney.

So, Mary Ann Akers, should we understand from your snide tone that Cheney does not deserved to be impeached? That he should face no accountability for his now proven lies and the role his campaign of deceit played in leading America into this bloody, destabilizing and unwinnable war? Just what, then, would justify impeachment in your mind?
Posted by: Disgusted | April 24, 2007 09:32 PM
Long, long overdue. From Dennis's lips to the rest of the House's ears. His strategy of going for Cheney first makes sense as I would hate to see the big idiot impeached first and then be stuck with Cheney in the top spot.

If the Washington Post wanted to salvage their reputation after 6 years of playing lap dog to the Bush administration, they would give this the coverage which it deserves.
As the political pendulum swings to the left over the next couple of years we should work to marginalize those parts of the mainstream media that helped to promote the Bush agenda. I would place the Washington Post near the top of that list.
Posted by: Phil | April 24, 2007 11:49 PM
Unfortunately Cheney's impeachment is a long shot. Not because the charges are wrong but because they claim they made decisions with faulty intelligence that everyone had access to and was widely believed and supported. Therefore the intelligence can be at fault but not those who consistantly used it with a end goal in mind. So they will claim they are victims with the same limitations to the truth as the least among us. It is as if the life of one soldier was never worth the simple critical questioning of intelligence that never had any basis of physical evidence. All the evidence was based on suppositions and the lack of evidence to the contrary.

Inasmuch as Dennis is the only Presidential candidate who has opposed this Iraq invasion from the start, it is not surprising the the Cheney impeachment proposal originates from him. Cheney was surely the major cheerleader beating the drums of war before the invasion, and clearly the most influential in spreading false 'intelligence'.
Many would like to see Cheney's impeachment proceed quickly to removal from office and more, followed by GW Bush. I am one such. I am grateful to Dennis. And I hope other members of this Congress recognize the value of this initiative, the need to see it through to completion and the broad support among the US American electorate for removing these criminals from our United States government.
I appreciate what Dennis has done before, and now.

IMPEACH NOW!...and I'm a Republican.
Bush has made horrific decisions. Every great leader, be it in business or politics, surrounds themselves with the best and brightest they can find. If Harriet Myers and Alberto Gonzalez are the best lawyers Bush can find that should tell you the low the bar has been set for this administration and to be so stubborn as to NOT execute the ideas to engage Iraq neighbors from the extremely knowledgable and experienced bipartisan members of the Iraq study group is idiotic. DEMOCRACY WORKS if you use it. IMPEACH NOW.

Apparently, Mary Ann Akers is one of those reporters who, a few years ago, laughed hysterically at President Bush's video of himself looking under furniture for WMD's. Well, a lot of us who have friends and neighbors with kids in Iraq didn't think it was so funny. Ms Akers and her ilk have no idea how much Bush and Cheney are hated outside her comfy little world of Washington, and how out of step with the rest of the country her snide little opinions are. The more you try to make fun of Kucinich for finally doing what over half of the country wants him to do, the more you'll look like a fool. hay, Cheney still smells as sweet as a Rose with the networks still fighting it out for audiemce supremacy. Can someone tell me what tv network,if any, is better than any other network? That sounded confusing--just like the 2000 election. Has anyone decided if there has been a decision by the American people about who could ACTUALLY deliver a palatable product to the American people. I think some one network actually can deliver an honest product to the people. I just wonder if anyone has a notion a decision has been made. I've decided who can do it--and it's not the network that USED to employ Charlie Rose.

The sleuth's tone is embarassingly patronizing when it comes to Kucinich. Kucinich has a much broader support than the media leads us to believe. This newspaper has been a supporter of the invasion of Iraq like most 'liberal' media so I'm not surprised. It's also not surprising to see newspapers like the Washington Post have the same stance as the Fox network when it comes to Middle East or those like Kucinich who have radical ideas for solutions of that region.

Since when has the Vice-President and the President been above the Law. They have done far more to hurt the American people than Bill Clinton's hummer in the Oval office. After spending billions on spying on ordinary americans, the NSA probably has the goods on half the potential Democratic candidates well into the future. as Kaady didn't attack anyone.
I called the top police official in the training division of Oregon
State Police and asked Lt. Fred, what must an officer do when he sees
another officer repeatedly beating/kicking a restrained person? Lt.
Fred said, the witnessing officer must assist in the arrest and report
the incident. I said what good would that do if the victim is maimed
for life or dies due to the police brutality? Not until I said I will
form a citizens oversight board did Lt. Fred say, I will take two steps
to make that change.
Seven months later Lt. Fred's top superior, Superintendent Ruecker failed
to reply to our letters and telephone calls to verify the changes we
requested to amend their policy/procedures, add new training and work
with our oversight board to require all officers and their supervisors
to intervene when an officer clearly is using excessive force as it is
their duty to do so. We notified all Oregon State Legislators of this
non-response from Supt. Ruecker so they pressured his superior which
forced Ruecker to send us their code of conduct and a cover letter
admitting that Ruecker has no specific data we requested of changes to
protect all Oregonians from police brutality. On December 1, 2006 Supt.
Ruecker resigned as he said for the betterment of members, his family
and Oregonians. Lt. Fred also resigned in 2006 as he was also pressured
too do so.
On March 12, 2007 Supt. Ruecker's replacement, Acting Supt. McLain said
in answer to my question as we secured on video/audio tape at his senate
hearing was, the person should file a complaint. If that was his family
member getting beaten would that be his same answer?
Sheriff Roberts of Clackamas County, their top cop failed to respond to
our registered letter for 6 months asking the same question so we
contacted all the Clackamas County Commissioners and they required
Roberts to respond to us. A repeat of NO changes in their
policy/procedures, training and they will not work with our oversight
board to protect all Oregonians from police brutality.
On July 4, 2006 we sent a registered letter to the Police Chief, Skelton
of Sandy, Oregon again asking for the same documents; policy/procedure,
training and reporting to our oversight board as stated above and
without any surprise to us NO response from the the police chief.
On Feb. 20, 2007 I asked Portland Police Chief Sizer at a public meeting
the same question and Sizer said, I answered that question, which I
replied that is a false statement! We received another video/audio tape
that proves our allegation that Chief failed to respond to our police
brutality question. We sent a registered letter to Chief Sizer to give
her another chance to answer our dire question and she failed again to
respond as we received NO letter or telephone calls on this matter from
her.
All 5 top cops were made aware they are in violation of their sworn
oaths of office, and many violations of Oregon State and United States
Constitution Laws and that this data has been given to federal agencies
as our very top state officials, the governor & the attorney General
condone the 5 top cops wrong, illegal actions. The attorney general was
pressured to author a new bill, Senate Bill 111, "Police Excessive
Force" but refused to even consider our formal 3 amendments to the
senate bill to protect all Oregonians as stated above to all the 5 top
cops of Oregon.
WE THE PEOPLE, are convinced that from the very top Oregon State Official, Governor Kulongoski, Attorney General Meyers, former and current O.S.P Superintendent's Ruecker & McLain, Sheriff Roberts, Police Chief Sizer and Police Chief Skelton not only refuse to protect all Oregonians from Rouge Cops, they don't care about the people that were killed in unjustifiable homicides by out of control cops which stole about 130 years away from Rubio, Kaady & Chasse men & shattered their families and friends. In the last 9 months these 3 cases were filed in the federal courts of Oregon and are expected to exceed over $100 million which will drain the funds to operate effective law enforcement agencies.
What happens in Oregon goes Nationwide.

Now, all we have to do is take this fervor and enthusiasm to our Senators, Congressman, television stations, and other news organizations. The problem with the "left" is there is no organization to leverage the respected opinions of power to help advance their agenda with the American people. Who cares what Sheryl Crow and Bono think about the environment or Bush's lies. Get excited when you convince Fox News to air Mr. Kucinich's valor.

Wow, I am just floored at the number of certifiably crazy people posting here. Either that, or a few crazy people have been diligent in inventing creative variations on the same rant... Kucinich is just the other side of the same coin that was the right-wing extremism of yesteryear offered by Dornan or Barr...

Mr. Kucinish's name will one day be known in US History as one of this country's greatest patriots. I only wish more members of congress were as brave as he is. Imagine all the other secrets this administration has that have yet to be revealed. Hang On America, this is just the tip of a melting iceberg. This country has looked the other way far to long, we are either to busy, don't care or are from another planet not to see what the Bush Administration has done to this country. Its time for a good house cleaning and show this country and other nations that we can still be true leaders of this endangered planet.

Impeachment its not just for blow jobs anymore. To lie a nation into war is wrong. To make tons of cash off your stock portfolio because of the war you lied to get is wrong. And to ask someone to fight and die in a war that is a lie just might be an impeachable thing.
Call you congress man tell him/her you demand Impeachment Kucinich can not do this alone he needs the American people call your newspapers this will not happen without a populist out cry.
We The People Demand Rule Of Law!

Well, Miss Mary Anne, aren't you a snippy little thing!
Your OPINION that Kucinich will not succeed, your use of terms such as "gonzo" and other clearly slanted or charged terms are just that, your opinions. As such, they should be so presented, rather than placed in a major national newspaper's website unchallenged.
What is clearer still, however, is that a clear majority of the American people, in poll after poll, want to be RID of the Bush-Cheney organized crime family yesterday if not sooner. If that's "gonzo", then so be it.
Whether Kucinich will succeed or not, your snotty little efforts to make him look like a loony are not appreciated, nor are they professional. And nor, indeed, are they true in any objective sense.
Try writing without so many subjective adjectives, and see if it doesn't make you feel like a real journalist after all.

Mary Ann Akers thinks she is a journalist. She is not. She is a biased mouthpiece for the powers that be and should be fired and blacklisted from writing so much as a poem ever again.

Have we ever thought seriously about our brothers and sisters who are still being killed and maimed in Iraq today, just to maintain Bush Administration's lies?
After killing so many innocent people since this bogus war of terror, are we safer now? Give me a break!

You know, I would prefer President Nancy Pelosi over President Hillary Clinton.

The most despicable abuses of power in US history...managed by one evil man...yet challenged by one good man...without his own fear and smear machine. Such a predictable and savage MSM tone thus far.
Repent now or prepare to join Cheney at his final destination.

I hope that the whole world would be a better place without any help from the destructive and self serving presidency with a vicious and wicked VP with oil interests. Impeachment is deemed to be urgent as the majority of the people feel. The basis would be perjury and contempt of the American people.
