Everybody Knows Nancy Pelosi

Hideously low approval ratings of the Congress she controls notwithstanding, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's name is well known. So are her words.

Pelosi was the subject of Tuesday night's "Final Jeopardy" category on the "Jeopardy" game show. Each of the three contestants submitted a correct answer (in the form of a question!) about something Pelosi said last January when she was sworn in as the first ever female speaker of the House.

This is giving Pelosi aides something to cheer about during this Memorial Day week recess on Capitol Hill. Pelosi's communications director, Brendan Daly, sent the following email to his staff this morning:

For those who missed it, last night's Final Jeopardy category was "Notable Women" and the answer was: "On Jan. 4, 2007 she said, 'For our daughters and our granddaughters, today we have broken the marble ceiling.'"

All three contestants properly guessed, "Who is Nancy Pelosi?"

My 9-year-old daughter was watching with her grandparents and called me breathlessly while my wife and I were out for our anniversary dinner. She was especially glad to report that all three contestants (two men and one woman) knew the answer.

'Congress she controls'!!?? I think she controls congress as much as George Bush controls Cheney. The overall ratings of congress are being brought down by the corrupt republican congressmen.
The generic congressional poll average @ http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/ is +11.5 to democrats.

Posted by: yugan | May 30, 2007 3:38 PM

I like her and I think you are right about the average being brought down by the Republicans I wish them gone and I can't wait till November of 2008 to vote against any Republican running.

Posted by: ant | May 30, 2007 4:14 PM

Pelosi's personal numbers aren't that bad. The reason why Congress' overall approval rating is so low is because Republicans hate the Democrats and the liberals hate the war in Iraq.

What do you think about the Democrat backed Immigration (Amnisty) reform bill being touted by both parties and the Prez? I just got off a bunch of E-Mails to my Reps. how about you? Telephone tomorrow incl white house. With this Immigration bill Mrs. Pelosi may not be the Majority leader very long, with the actual poles of reps phone calls going 9 to 1 against. This will be a very great boost in taxes if it passes, and guess who will be paying the fines? You have heard of earned income credits haven't you? That and what about the Muslims who are here Illegally?
When the bill is signed they become legal as well even if they are Al Queada operatives awaiting orders from their wahabi imam's.

It's getting to be a sad day in America. I am frightened what's going to happen in the 08 election. Corruption, lies, big-money corps lobbying, evil Congress and admin getting more evil, hidden agendas that get no mainstreet news... I am worried! The only fix is another revolution... and take back our Constitution and country!

I have two wonderfully successful, aware, educated daughters raised in the liberal hotbed of our nation---MA, who are committed to good citizenship and giving back. They have mates and children who are sensitive to social issues such as conservation, gender, race and religion, media violence and family values.
Ms. Pelosi's vision and performance for ethical reform and balancing out the NeoCon madness are grave disappointments to me. Being tough is no substitute for critical thinking. I'm not sure she's bright enough for the tasks that have befallen her.

Rep. Pelosi has made some mistakes, but which speaker hasn't?

Somehow, I hope she works to bring Republicans into the Democratic agenda, largely because of the hugely unpopular occupation of Iraq and the low regard for the president.

She has perks to dispense, and I'd like to see her focus on building a coalition that could become veto-proof. We have lots of time before the 2008 election and we need to overturn the do-nothing record of the last Republican Congress.

Let me see now.

Pelosi supports abortions that kill thousands of viable human being every year.

Her antiwar buddies are now again calling us military baby killers. Seems like they should know who baby killares are since they have killed hundreds of thousands more than we are alleged to have done.

Nancy Pelosi and President Bush, dumb and dumber. But it's you pro-life idiots that are responsible for the war. You are the extremeists. You belong in the middle east with the other terrorists. The need to control civilizations has always led to war. Learn from history or you are doomed to repeat it.

Posted by: TM | May 31, 2007 5:32 PM

TM, "Nancy Pelosi and President Bush, dumb and dumber. But it's you pro-life idiots that are responsible for the war. You are the extremeists."

Gee, what a thoughtful, well considered comment. Let's see, billions, not millions, but BILLIONS of people in the world are taught life long that abortion is wrong. You know, Catholics, Southern Baptists, Muslims, etc. (Could it be that baby production is one of the reasons behind Islam being the fastest growing religion?) Yet you label them all as EXTREMISTS? Makes you sound like a typical thoughtless, emotional, name calling left wing blogger who is either uneducated, ignorant or stupid, (or any combination thereof) and who therefore, is unable to substantively express an opinion.

Funny that the same people, who want Mrs. Clinton as a future president, accuse Mrs. Pelosi, as one not acting to their expectations. Mrs. Pelosi has been and is clear and direct. She is patriotic; she came from patriotic family. If republicans together with a substantial number of democrats (Mrs. Clinton is included) are and were allowing "the military genius" of Bush to ruin the country within last five + years, how could then the democratic leader stage impeachment of the commander in chief in the midst of the war? If there are no changes in Iraqi situation by September, then house would stop funding. This much is still in the power of Pelosi. Maybe, hopefully, senate would do the same. Meanwhile, Mrs. Clinton, who changes her official views on all issues with almost the speed of light and does it with the corresponding frequency, is the favorite for dems nomination, according to polls. If patriotism, integrity, and self-respect in politics are completely obsolete, then there is no difference at all who when and how? Mrs. Clinton, our very probable future president, according to official statistics in Washington Post, though I-personally don't think that the statistics is correct, promises to end the Iraqi war, but she would, probably, changes her mind when and if in White House. She, of course, prefers this dangerous work to be done without her direct involvement.

Posted by: aepelbaum | June 1, 2007 9:30 AM

If corruption is the litmus test, let's remember Messrs Murtha and Jefferson. Of course, President Clinton's departing pardons of convicted felons, one of whom evaded taxes to the tune of something like $45 million, suggests a Democratic tolerance for corruption that is conveniently ignored by too many.

I agree with yugan, "Pelosi's control on Congress is about as dominate and firm as Bush's control on Cheney."

I am just waiting for the Jeopardy category called "Strategic Political Reserve." And the answer is, "that would be Who is the Bush Administration."

Posted by: Sandi | June 1, 2007 10:31 AM

Nancy Pelosi, to me, was a bad move by Congress. Ever since the elections, they haven't been able to figure out anything together, just silly compromises that never work out long-term. What's more is the fact that if, God forbid, Bush and Cheney die in the next few months, she would be next in line for the Presidency. I don't mean to sound stupid but Pelosi sounds like she would have no idea what to do with the nation.

Posted by: Jenn | June 1, 2007 10:36 AM

Senior members of both houses of congress have formed a coalition with a less than bright president to give us all reason to fear for our future. This unholy coalition in concert with domestic and international corporations is hell bent on destrying the United States. Take a positive step to secure our future by visiting unity08.com.

What I gather most from the comments is that not a single one of you has a clue as to why winning in Iraq is so important to our future safety.
If we allow extremists to win in Iraq and install an Islamic state, we will have to fight them again in a couple of years, on their terms. And they are likely by that point to have a nuclear weapon, if they haven't used it on Israel (and they will) Khomeni doesn't care one bit about the 70 million Iranians (or the Iraqis). He will order the use of the bomb on Israel (or the US), knowing that Iran would be obliterated. But Islam will flourish, that is his ultimate goal.
Sound nuts? Do some reading on the topic.

I read these blogs and can't believe the actual stupidity behind them. Of all of the problems brought forth no one has hit on the cause. The cause of most of our problems, Political, is Congres. Congress thrives on HATE. Each party blames the other for their mistakes and it has gotten to the point that each individual Conrgessman or Wonmans will is more important that the nations. Each hide behind their hate.

I would suggest that we Amend the Constitution to place term limits on them of twelve years and a gratuitiy, for retirement, based on the avertage means income of the state where elected.Plus that you have to live in a state 10 years before you can run for elected office. electYong reasonable people that would work together to Unite this Nation instead of deviding it.

Yes Gary, I can envision a future world where the Americas, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand are the only refuges in a world dominated by Islamist fascist states governed by Sharia law. If you believe in individual freedom and liberty for your progeny, teach them that their freedom is likely to have a very high price if they want to keep it.

The Dims and Pubs are united in wasting taxpayer money. They just can't agree on how. I say impeach Bush and Cheney and make Nancy Pelosi the first woman president before Hillary can get a shot at it. At least she speaks English.

Posted by: Katharine Otto | June 1, 2007 4:58 PM

Pelosi is a power hungry witch. Also, she has zero integraty. It's spooky to think of the power she has.

Posted by: sardony1 | June 2, 2007 4:19 AM

Term limits is the answer. Allow a Rep or Senator 8 years with another 8 years after that as an advisor to the current Rep or Senator. Their pay would be dependant on the amount of input they provided to the current office holder. That way we would not be wasting their talents.

Posted by: SteveB | June 4, 2007 11:10 AM

All this chatter about impeachment is irresponsible nonsense. No one is going to be impeached for doing their job even if the way they do it is not to one's liking. The standard is "high crimes and misdemeanors", not disagreeing with hot headed marginally literate bloggers.

Seems that this apple hasn't fallen very far from the family tree. Granddad and dad were Baltimore mobsters with nothing on their minds but hoarding as much illegal money as could possible and spending the rest of their time lying to their constituents most of whom didn't have the good sense to come in out of the rain. Nancy may have moved to SF but little has changed. She is in love with the sound of her own voice and has little time for the people she claims to be representing.

Our nation is in trouble, and shooting barbed arrows at our politicians, who ARE elected by US, will solve nothing.Make your voice, your opinion, your ideas HEARD-write your congressman, representative, your president. We need a solution, not dissention.A plan, not political graft. The errors in foreign policy must be addressed, not just belittled among mud-slinging factions. The incredibly short-sighted current administration has got to take off the blinders, admit to their mistakes, and open a real NON-PARTISAN discussion focused on the real problems we are facing. We are tired of a war that is beyond understanding, tired of losing our soldiers, our fathers, mothers, sons and daughters..The problems we as a nation face are numerous, but so are those of many other nations and nation-states.They are not insurmountable, but it takes teamwork and an open mind; something neither party has evidenced. As long as we are a "nation divided" and not a "nation indivisible",we are doomed to failure.Let's keep our eye on the ball, shall we? Our politicians WORK FOR US,something they tend to forget,or just plain discount, and they need reminded of the fact that they are PUBLIC SERVANTS,which should say it all..So get involved,it is up to us as citizens to guide our public officials, and to police them as is necessary,ya' dig?

Nancy Pelosi is a meanspirited, vindictive woman who will do both the Democrats and Congress more harm than good. Here recent foray into international affaiars is a perfecct example. While the idea of engaging Syria is an excellent one , there could have been no worse choice than Nancy Pelosi to visit the Middle East. Frankly she looked foolish and extremely uncocmfortable and sounded inexperienced and frankly clueless. Obviously her experience with the Muslim world is extremely limited. When you have Hamas supporting you, you know that you have missed the mark.

In response to Steve Hager, the problem with Congress is the American voter. They haven't realized yet that you don't have to be smart to be in Congress. All you need is money or be able raise it and listen to what your handlers tell you. Today's Congress is a bunch of wimps with no ideas and no vision. They are given a card each day on how to cast their votes. It is a pathetic lot.

Yet, poll after poll shows that the public hate Congress but love their Congressperson. Wakeup America, your congressperson is just as bad as the rest.

As a Harvard professor recently said: "Our Founding Fathers were geniuses because they put together a government that could be run by idiots."

Posted by: CongressionalWatchdog | June 5, 2007 11:59 AM

TM I was referring to what you said. "Nancy Pelosi and President Bush, dumb and dumber. But it's you pro-life idiots that are responsible for the war. You are the extremeists."

As someone educated in history I am well aware that there have probably been more people killed, discriminated against or otherwise harmed due to competing religious beliefs (including religious adherence to communism and fascism) than anything else. The comment was your failure to understand that human beings grow up being taught and influenced by other human beings who may not know what they are talking about. The result is that people take action on these beliefs. Then you come along and paint all pro-life types with the same brush and label them as responsible for this particular war with no evidence whatsoever to support such a claim.

Posted by: r man | June 5, 2007 3:03 PM

I THINK THAT ALL OF OUR SO CALLED POLITICIANS SHOULD REMEMBER WHO PAYS THEIR SALERY AND START DOING THEIR JOBS. LOOK PEOPLE DON'T LIKE WAR THEY DON'T LIKE ABORTION, THEY DON'T LIKE A LOT OF THINGS BUT THESE UNINTED STATES WAS FORMED BY IMMIGRANTS OUR ANCESTERS WERE NOT BORN HERE BUT WE PAY TAXES AND WE ARE AMERICANS AND WE HAVE A RESPONSABILITY TO PROTECT HER FROM PEOPLE THAT WANT HER GONE. NOW I MAY NOT BE AS EDUCATED AS SOME OF YOU AND I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO SPEEK MY MIND WITH TYPE BUT I AM JUST AS SMART AS THE NEXT GUY AND FOR ANY ONE OF YOU THAT DOESN'T LIKE MY OPINION THEN GOD BLESS YOU.
