Rep. Jackson Jr. and Lee Terry, Still Spatting
One of the rowdier arguments in Congress this week, in the tense and waning moments before August recess begins apparently has not, as previously suggested, been put to rest - at all.
A spokeswoman for Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.) told the Sleuth this week that her boss and Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) had shaken hands and agreed to let bygones be bygones after the two congressmen nearly came to blows on the House floor Tuesday. "It's in the past now," she told us.
Or maybe not.
Because today the Omaha World-Herald reports that Jackson finally ended his silence and decided to give his side of the story after Omaha area martial artists called his office wanting to know why he - a muscular guy who, unlike Terry, is trained in kung fu and tae kwon do - was picking on their congressman. (Click here to see photos of Jackson practicing martial arts.)
The way Terry had told the story, Jackson was dropping the F-word repeatedly during their spat on the House floor and challenged Terry to "step outside."
The way Jackson tells the story, Terry was the bully.
Jackson claims Terry was the potty mouth. "Why is he in my face and cursing?" the newspaper quoted Jackson as saying. "I'm in a position where I needed to defend myself."
Jackson admitted that when Terry questioned his integrity and suggested the Illinois Democrat was escalating the argument, Jackson said he told Terry, "Now let me show you what escalation really is."
Terry, he stands by what he said originally, which essentially is that Jackson was a big meanie.
There's a long day ahead of them yet on Capitol Hill, let's hope things don't get too ugly.
