Hillary Loses the Nina Primary
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) took heavy flak from all sides this week -- and not just from her rivals at the Democratic debate.
While her presidential primary competitors at the Drexel University forum in Philadelphia Tuesday evening skewered her on everything from her integrity and electability to her aggressive stance on Iran, Clinton took heat from the Fourth Estate in Washington for her penchant for secrecy.
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) sharply criticized Clinton and her former president hubby for keeping their documents under wraps at the National Archives and likened them to the Bush administration -- which he called "one of the most secretive administrations in our history." An hour earlier, Nina Totenberg of National Public Radio made the same comparison on a different topic.
Totenberg was accepting an award at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press gala, where government secrecy was a running theme. The NPR diva compared then first lady Clinton's health care task force to the energy task force of notoriously secretive Vice President Dick Cheney. She said Clinton made Cheney "look like he was running a Common Cause meeting."

Why does the press not call HRC on her statement that it is the National Archives holding up access to her papers. Given the Clintons' letter to the Archives, that seems to be an outright lie. Where it the speaking truth to power, Washington Post?
Isn't it your job to question openness? You guys are only too happy to question Cheney's secretive nature, but how about the potential next administration? Doesn't the American public deserve to know?

That's a pretty silly comment by Totenberg. Cheney and Addington and Bush, the whole bunch, think that they are a royal family. They've told so many lies about life-and-death matters, to compare Clinton or her husband to Cheney is absurd. But I know if you work for NPR or any other news outlet, it helps your standing in DC to bash Democrats.

Clinton said this. Bush/Cheney said that. Faux News accuses Clinton (and pick which Clinton it is for yourself) of all manner of things. Meanwhile, the press refuses to ask the tough and obvious questions of either side in order to remain cozy with power.
This is exactly why we don't need Mrs. Clinton as our next president. We really don't have the luxury of another four to eight years of "he said this, she said that, they said something else" demonizing.
Think about it, folks. The Clintons and the Republicans (again, pick your Republican) need each other! They are two sides of the same coin that only prosper by having the other side to rail against. And yet they're both taking money from the same sources! This is all a disgusting game designed to keep a public with ADD interested in a competition--like hype for a sporting event.
Meanwhile, there are serious problems that need to be solved in this country. They won't even be touched unless we stop electing these dynasties that exist only to retain power.
Yes, Bush and Cheney are unethically secretive. Still, I applaud Totenberg for raising this matter. If only she or someone in her profession had the guts to demand answers from Bush/Cheney/the Clintons to their faces.
We need more Helen Thomases.

The Same Thing That Hiliary Went Through On Tuesday Could Have Been Said About Obama,& Edwards,But It Seems Whenever Hilliary Opens Her Mouth Some One Has Some Negative Attack To Shoot Her Position Down.Senator Clinton Is Not Perfect But It Seems Like That She Is The Only One With These Issues,Barack Obama Is A LIAR,& Flip Flopper For Changing His Position Of I Hope The Audacity,Was The Way Of Politics In Washington,But I See He's Not Getting Grilled For That Lie,I Wonder Why Not,He's Lied About Where He's From About His Family's Non Present At Any Of His Campaign Or Speaking On His Behalf,I Wonder Why Not.Edwards Is A Homophobic That If You Look At Him Whenever He Opens His Mouth It Comes Out Sideways,He Used His Wifes Health To Benefit His Cause,Which i Think Is Pathetic,He's Trying To Have A Students Editorial Stopped From Being Published,Because He Doesn't Want The Public To Know What He;s Doing While In North Carolina,He Accepts Donations From Different Hedge Funds,And Then Critisize Hilliary For Doing The Same,So Why Aren't Any Of These Candidates Being Grilled On These Issues Like Senator Clinton.I Wonder Why Not

As I said before..."HRC's association with WJC is absolutely the only reason she has made it this far. She has done NOTHING on her own to establish presidential level credentials. How can simply being a woman trump the proven accomplishments of so many of the other candidates? It doesn't. What it demonstrates is the incredible stupidity and lack of objectivity of the media and their powerful influence on so many in the electorate. Sadly, it will probably be to the nation's detriment."
Why does the press and her debate opponents not pursue the obvious? Specifically address the issue of what organizations HRC has led and what accomplishments she has INDEPENDENTLY achieved that demonstrate she is of presidential calibre. Women like Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meir did so. What has HRC done? Virtually nothing. But she is a woman and was associated with Bill Clinton and to many, that's all that matters.

to actuator: You state that Hillary hasn't accomplished anything on her own unlike Margaret Thatcher/Golda Meir. What did they accomplish before getting into the postion they are most noted for? It wasn't until they became powerful enough to show they were capable of performing the tasks at hand, that they received any recognition.
Did Bill help Hillary through college, law school,etc......I think working hard to assure health care for 6m kid's shouldn't be called nothing. She did that with hard work and dedication, not as a favor from Bill.
Given the chance, she'll show that she is as equal to those two women,if not more.

It is my understanding that Bill Clinton asked for all documnets to be made public at the time that he left office. Bush has tried to keep all of these things secret.
Think about it folks if these documnets were to help Hilliary bush would keep them under wraps. If they were to hurt Hillary they'd be on the front page of every paper in the country.

Y'all better come to grips with the fact of a 'royal' Clinton family and entourage are waiting to saddle up to the Federal money trough again. It happened under Clinton I and would occur under Clinton II, if elected (same deal with Bush I and Bush II). Why are people not bothered with this unbroken chain of Yale graduates running the country with their friends. HRC is not a breath of fresh air, just recycled stuff. She has not 'earned' the right to be nominated and elected, this is but fairy dust and news spin. It's time for the these two families to go away and give us a chance with really new people and ideas.
Posted by: JimU | November 1, 2007 12:46 PM | Report abuse
Jime, you proved my point by not being able to name an organization led or an accomplishment that indicates HRC is presidential material. You did not because you can not. Having obtained a law degree in not in itself a qualifier. Her performance in pursuit of the health care initiative during Bill's tenure is evidence she lacks leadership skills. The ONLY reason she gets consideration is her relationship with Bill. 'Tis a fact, sorry.

Way to go Barack! He is right, you know. The Clintons and the Bushes do have secrets. And those secrets probably should be made public because they could open doors as to why all these outrageous events keep occurring and re-occurring.
Since Barack, Nina Totenberg and, mostly likely, many others have made the same assumption, I am going to assume the same; that the Clintons and Bushes have something hidden that needs to be revealed.
And probably soon before something bigger than all that has happened in one occurs.

Neither Golda Meir or Margaret Thatcher's spouses were in politics. Niether of them spent time as First Lady or Israel or United Kingdom before running for or assuming office. I think the UK would scoff at the notion of Cherie Blair, as accomplished as she is, running for Parliament and Prime Minister to succeeded her husband. The most apropos political spouse to compare Hillary to is Eva Peron. I don't think that's what we want.
Unlike a the widows of political persons who run to fill their (typically) husbands unexpired terms, Hillary is using the coattails -- no, wearing the coat -- of her husband.
She brings with her the vast right wing conspiracy, the secrecy and scandal that plagued the Clinton White House, the arrogance of a know-it-all policy wonk unable to work with others.
Hillary would like people to think that she is a feminist. But examining her feminist street cred shows us a woman dependent on her husband for her name recognition (and his accomplishments), his fame and likeability to reflect positively on her. Women in the Clinton administration (or invited to join the administration) were frequently thrown under the bus: Dee Dee Meyers, Lani Guinere, Zoe Baird, Jocelyn Elders, to name just a few. Hillary -- in the face of at least four extra-martical trysts (Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey and Monica Lewinsky) by her husband -- pulled a Tammy Wynette and stood by her man, tuning a blind eye to his infidelity, and pretending that his very public humiliation of her didn't matter. Hardly a "feminist" stance.
Hillary, as has been said before, possesses none of the charm of her husband which allowed him to ingratiate himself with voters, lobbyists, money-men and women. The Clinton practice of polling a subject to death to determine where to stand behind it continues, but Hillary lacks the grace of her husband who could make you think he WAS for it before he was against it and that was A-OK. A return to the Clinton style of governance is a return to 24-hour parsing -- what is the meaning of "is"? today? yesterday?
Hillary is not her husband. She cannot give him a third term in office. (And giving it to him will not make him love her -- which I think is the base reason for Hillary's run.) Her husband is in an orbit and has always been, at a speed and altitude at which Hillary cannot fly, not matter how hard she tries. She did not make a name for herself separate and apart from him. She cannot now.
Wommen voters cannot be and should not be seduced into voting for Hillary on the flimsy promise of "making history." A cursory read of Hillary's book "Living History" will tell you why not.
Hillary's debate performance Tuesday night is the real Hillary behind the mask. And the mask is hideously cracked. Hillary cannot announce she's playing "big boy politics," and whine about piling on. Nor can she play the gender card: poor little Hillary, she's just a woman. (No, she can't play that card any more than Barack Obama or Bill Richardsom can play the race or ethnicity cards. Or Dennis Kucinich can play the "short guy" card.)
Smart women will see through Hillary Clinton and save their history making vote for a woman far better qualified to make the run for President. They will opt out of the Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton revolving door, and vote for real change. Change we can believe in.

I said to myself after watching the MSNBC Debates that never again. I am so very disappointed with Tim and Brian for actually setting the stage for the nasty attack against Hillary. Enough is enough and my appreciation for Bill Richardson for standing up fo Hillary. I have had enough of Edwards and Obama period. They getting desperate and we as intelligent Americans can see this I hope. About her support of my Gov. stand on the drivers license. Hillary was actually very forth right. It isn't the perfect answer and the New York Gov. had no other choice on how to manage the problem. Yes there is negativity about this whole issue in NYSTATE but as Hillary states something had to be done since Bush and Cheney have done nothing except make us the most disliked nation in the world and has made us almost bankrupt. The next debate is coming up soon and I hope the CNN will be fair to All the candidates. Keith Oberman is the best thing on MSNBC. I use to watch Chris Matthews and not he has really turned me off since I finally woke up to the fact that he is against Hillary. Chris you are going to loose your listeners with some of your approach to have fair and openess. Hats off the Keith and also Abrams.

There is no question that the good folks at MSNBC set this debate up to elicit fireworks directed at Hillary Clinton because they thought it would be more entertaining that way. Thats why she was at the middle podium with her two nearest competitors on either side. And Tim Russert is the the king of the gotcha question and is often unfair to his democratic guests. Still, Hillary is the front runner and if all those conditions were removed, she would have taken the same shots because thats how people who are running for office are supposed to act, especially when told they are trailing in the polls with an election just around the corner. So the damsel in distress act on the part of the Hillary campaign may backfire and if so will be something she brought on herself because it belies the image of the tough, unflappable leader she has sought to convey with her campaign and some of her votes in Congress concerning war.

Hillary's accomplishments include being a great Senator from the State of New York, who's earned plaudits from fellow Senators on both sides of aisles (we need more of this, not less). She got elected the first time by sweeping upstate, the first Democrat to do so. The fact of the matter is that she looks, sounds and acts the most Presidential of all the candidates - Democratic or Republican.

I am not impressed with this self righteous demand for records. If I were then I would insist that Senator Obama comply with similar requests for information from newsmen in his own city.
What rankles me more is the blatant partisanship of Matthews and Russert. To them I would say what Army Secretary Welch famously said to Senator McCarthy in the face of similar tirades: "Have you no sense of decency?'

If you want a continuation of the Bush administration then vote for Hillary. She is so afraid of showing any signs of femininity that she always votes as a hawk. She never wears a dress because she sees that as a sign of weakness. She tries hard to stick to her message but was definitely caught off base when the media finally stood up to her. I for one am glad that Russert and Williams finally took her on and showed her for the two faced liar that she is. Do you honestly believe that she did not know what Bill Clinton was doing when he wrote that letter to the archives. He does not go to the men's room without her knowledge. At some point we are going to have to elect someone to the presidency that has some amount of honesty and integrity. I would love to have a woman as president in my lifetime. Hillary is not going to get my vote. I will not vote for the first time in my life if she gets the nomination of my party. As a matter of fact if she does I will officially leave the party. I will never again vote for the lesser of who makes me vomit.

Truth is sometimes so obvious. Men are afraid of her because she is female. Period. Her work in education, and health care speaks volumes. She has represented the US in 83 countries. What was Bush doing while she championed education for handicapped kids? Getting drunk as a lifestyle.

Democratic Debate in Philadelphia - Who was least honest
"I think that our responsibility as presidential candidates is to be in 'tell the truth' mode all the time," Edwards said.
Which candidate do you believe was the least honest & least forthcoming during the Debate?
