It's Elementary, My Dear for GOP House Candidate
Wow, the criteria for becoming a member of Congress are getting tougher all the time.
A Republican House candidate from Missouri is sounding as if he thinks he'll have a leg up on the competition to replace retiring Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R-Mo.), who's running for governor -- and not just because of his rushing yards record.
Brock Olivo, a former star running back for the University of Missouri and a player for the Detroit Lions for four years, doesn't have a platform yet. But he thinks he has one thing going for him, besides being a jock.
"Not only was I football player, but I also was in social studies class, and I have a passion for how this country works," Olivo told reporters recently.
Good old social studies, a fine qualification.
His platform may be nonexistent, but at least he's on to a catchy slogan: "Put the ball in my hands. I want to be the citizen's politician."

Better still -- the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has reported that Brock Olivo has never so much as voted, EVER. As a teacher in Missouri, I can confidently report that actually do teach about civic responsibility and voting in social studies class; he may have missed that lesson...

This sounds like it would be a very good place for a Democrat to run....surely one could be found who would be more qualified than this Brock Olivo. We need a few more good men (or women).

Olivo's success due to his character is unparalleled not only in this race, but in this modern world. His work ethic, honesty, leadership, and ability to forge success have blazed a reputation that is the best among those who's paths he's crossed. He will do the same for the people of the ninth through his sheer determination to lead them and be the strongest voice for them in Washington. He isn't a career politician: remember the nine scariest words: "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help." This isn't him - which sets him apart from all the others in the race, R or D. The people will speak for him as he unites them and as they collectively move forward to further the vision of the ninth district. Olivo is only the 7th player in the history of Ole' Mizzou to have his number retired for the intangibles, he was tapped into the exclusive secret honor society Mystical 7 for his representation of the University, and he's got a network due to those accomplishments that spreads throughout the ninth district and the country. He is very smart and capable of the work ahead of him, and I can't wait to join the effort! Go MIZZOU!

Being a good FB player hardly translates into being a good Congressman.
I'm a lifelong Republican, and I'll vote Democrat if he makes the ticket. He's an embarassment to the party.

I don't think anybody on this site suggested that being a good athlete translates to being a good politician - which we have very few of in this day. I think that those who have enjoyed such great success in such a rigorous career such as professional sports is equiped with the package to gain success in many areas, specifically the public realm. The skill set is what historical leadership is defined as: the ability to lead and transform those around you, and to be unwavering in the face of criticism. We will see all of these fine qualities from Olivo over the next several months, and the people will speak, not the party. That's what counts - the people. Seems like you, Chuck, are lock-step in-line with the instititution, and not the people. How unfortunate.
