Sen. Warner, 81, Off the DL, But Not 91-year-old Byrd
While octogenarian Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) was released from the hospital Wednesday and immediately went back to work, nonagenarian Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) remains at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington after falling at his home late Monday night.
Byrd, 90, the oldest and longest serving member of the Senate -- who, as president pro tempore of the Senate, is third in line of succession to the presidency -- is rearing to join Warner back on the Hill.
"Senator Byrd is still in the hospital under observation -- much to his chagrin -- feeling a bit feisty according to his daughter, and wants to get back to work as soon as possible," Byrd spokesman Jesse Jacobs tells us.
Byrd has cast a record 18,241 votes in the Senate and, according to Jacobs, is anxious to be first to get to the 20,000 Vote Club. "And being in the hospital does not help that effort!!" Jacobs wrote in an email to the Sleuth.
Jacobs said it didn't appear Byrd had broken any bones during his tumble Monday night. The doctors are just being cautious. "Based on the fact that he is 90 years of age and his position as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, I think they are just taking some added precautions," he said.
Warner, meanwhile, was released Wednesday from Inova Fairfax Hospital and "returned directly to the office and resumed previously scheduled engagements. According to a statement from his office, Warner, 81, was hospitalized for two days this week "during which time he responded positively to new medications and rhythm treatments for atrial fibrillation."
"Last evening, his heart returned to a normal rhythm," the statement said.
Warner is retiring when his term expires at the end of this year. Byrd was re-elected to a 9th term in 2006.

That Robert Byrd is a Democrat is shameful and embarrassing. The R's do not have any Klansmen, why do we? For those who do not know: Sen. Bryd was a member of the KKK. Sheets, burning crosses...the whole nine yards.

Sen. Byrd has admitted to his youthful speech writing for the KKK. It was a shortlived experience and one for which he continues to be sorry. His tireless work to save the constitution is what should concern the folks these days as inroads are being made daily by this administration.

DL snarky? Must not be a sports fan; simply means "disabled list" meaning one with an injury that prevents playing. Senator Byrd, being in the hospital, is unable to journey to the Senate and thus is unable to play; on the DL.
