David Vitter (and the rest of America), Blessed By Pope Benedict

To see Pope Benedict XVI in person at the White House was the climax of a truly blessed (and just plain lucky) week for Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), who dodged the ultimate bullet by not having to testify in the trial of the D.C. Madam.

Vitter and his wife, Wendy, were spotted Wednesday among the thousands of guests who gathered on the south lawn of the White House to sing "Happy Birthday" to the pontiff on his 81st birthday and receive his blessing for America.

For Vitter, a devout Catholic, seeing His Holiness in the flesh was the culmination of one gigantic sigh of relief.

On Tuesday, the Louisiana Republican was spared the threatening embarrassment of having to explain why his telephone number showed up not once, not twice -- but six times -- on the phone records of the so-called D.C. Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, when he was a House member. Palfrey's defense rested its case without calling any witnesses.

Palfrey wasn't as blessed. She was convicted Tuesday of running a prostitution ring, not a "high-end erotic fantasy service" as she had claimed. (Her defense attorney had subpoenaed Vitter to testify in hopes of -- get this -- bolstering Palfrey's claim that her employees only provided sexual fantasy, not actual sex, for money.)

Also spotted in the crowd on the south lawn Wednesday was Rick Santorum, the former GOP senator from Pennsylvania who was defeated by Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) in 2006.

One informant says although Santorum, who is also Catholic, was "way in the back" where the staffers stood, "he sure was excited."

After losing his Senate seat, Santorum joined the Pittsburgh-based law firm Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott. He works out of the firm's Washington office. (Guess they decided to stay in that house in Leesburg, Va., where the Santorums' cyber-schooling of their five children became a thorny issue in the 2006 campaign.)

I understand Senator Vitter wore his formal diaper for the big blessing. Rumor has it that Sen Vitter was so excited when the pontiff sprinkled him with holy water that, well, let's just say that the special diaper isn't so special anymore.

Sen. Vitter deserves the blessing of the Pope as do we all. your column, the remarks of the peanut gallery and the hate felt towards GOD by the liberals however show we have a long way to go in the eyes of the Lord.

Dwight: No one hates God, so you can just can it with your standard conservobot talking points. What we hate is the blatant, rotten hypocrisy of scum like David Vitter and others of his ilk.
That you would defend this pathetic excuse of a right-wing Bush rubber-stamping senator and major-league fornicator is far more damaging to YOU, sir, than the "liberals" you spit at.
Start thinking for yourself, Dwight.

Posted by: vegasgirl | April 16, 2008 6:51 PM

On another note: Isn't just typical of Vitter, a hypocrite extraordinaire, to seek the Pope's blessing.
News flash, Sen. Vitter: Bill Clinton's reckless infedilities will never be erased, and neither will your couplings with a hooker.
You are a disgrace to Louisiana and the U.S. Senate. Please do the honorable thing and resign.

What is so surprising about the visit of an ex-Nazi Pope with a Bush? Pope Pius XII and Prescott Bush (Dubya's granddaddy), were also buddies with the Nazis, and the Bush clan had some of their companies taken away for violating the Trading with the Enemy Act in WWII. In fact, Union Bank, started by Dubya's forefathers, financed the first Nazi headquarters building in Germany.

It's tradition, folks. Look into how the Luftwaffe was able to get high-octane gasoline to kill the British in the Battle of Britain.

Now, THAT'S real capitalism!!

let's talk about hypocrisy for a second. how many of ya'll trashed bill clinton when he smoked the intern?

Posted by: caleb | April 16, 2008 8:04 PM

This journalist was in the presence of the pope and the only thing she notice and wrote about was a Vitter and Santorum sighting???

1. vegasgirl...There are people out there that do hate God, they're called the ACLU.
This article fails to mention real hypocrites such as John Kerry who took on thousands of dollars from the ACLU in 2004, but he was there to meet with the Pontiff. Same old Kerry...two-faced. What about a woman that sees nothing wrong with abortion and even signed onto a letter complaining about the Catholic church's stances? Well, Pelosi was there to receive her communion.
This article really should be about those pretenders instead of a sarcasm piece on a man who was there for the RIGHT reasons.
Look in your own cupboard before raiding someone else's.

Obviously the liberal and biased author of this story is showing she simply set out to take cheap shots of a very low standard. Her sad and weak-minded commentary took no talent or thought process to write whatsoever. It takes little brain power to throw mud but her weak diatribe openly paints a picture so left-leaning one has to admit this author's agenda is showing. Senator Vitter who enjoys strong support has apologized to voters in his state and gone back to work. You may be surprised to know that voters want their senator to work for them on issues of importance like health care, jobs, economy, lowering taxes, fighting illegal immigration and supporting a strong national defense. In fact, people moved on as this story graces page 36B and beyond in its ongoing fade from any coverage whatsoever. The author does not realize biased and blind liberal fiction like hers is relegated to the bird cage of life for the purpose of cleaning up droppings on a daily basis and read carefully by the birds. She will obviously find her superficial writing somewhere between the recycle bin and the trash heap which, in my view, is exactly where her career is headed.

Posted by: facts matter | April 16, 2008 9:31 PM

The author is lost in space. It is almost like they sent her out there to do a hit piece. She sounds like she was reporting for the grocery store tabloids and a cheap one at that. Kinda Sad.

MAA is a bottom feeder. Just reading this you guys may need to realize what we all already know about her. story was a non story if you ask me...why did she even write this crap?

Why is he referred to as a devout Catholic? Obviously he isn't that devout if he's getting off with hookers.

Hey, seenitbefore, dumb@ss--it's a blog. Why are you so stupid?

Posted by: Fred | April 16, 2008 9:49 PM

This is the first, and last, entry I will read from Ms. Akers. It was nasty with a mocking tone towards the Catholic Church. Does she comment this way about Muslim Leaders and Jewish Leaders, or does she have a particular issue with Catholics? Does the Washington Post condone Anti-Catholic commentators? (I'm pretty sure the editor's watch Anti-Semitism a little closer.)

Linking Senator Vitter's issues with the Pope's visit reveals a great deal about Ms Akers. Probably won't find "The Sleuth" in any Church on Sunday.

facts matter says:
"You may be surprised to know that voters want their senator to work for them on issues of importance like health care, jobs, economy, lowering taxes, fighting illegal immigration and supporting a strong national defense."

You might want to rethink that, after seeing what Diaper Dave and his co-horts have done to the environment, the economy, illegal immigration, and our Armed Forces.

Complaining about Kerry and Pelosi being there to meet the pope for the wrong reasons, 2manystrokes says regarding them and Diaper Dave Vitter:
"This article really should be about those pretenders instead of a sarcasm piece on a man who was there for the RIGHT reasons."

Is this woman kidding me with this rambling prattle posing as news and commentary on important issues? Of all the topics a writer could find to reference about the pope's visit to Washington yesterday, all this "slueth" can find to snoop out and report on is David Vitter singing "Happy Birthday" to him along with the hundreds of other catholics in the crowd. Is the left so starved for a reason to attack they have have been reduced to sending out their spies to stag the worship habits of Republicans? David Vitter hasn't been accused of any crime and, as admitted even in this bumbling garbage posing as journalism, he wasn't even called to testify to anyone else's crimes. Has not one person, in all the speculative conjecture that has been batted about in the media by left leaning pundits with obvious smear agendas, even allowed it to cross their narrow little minds that guilt by association is no proof of guilt at all, and that condemning people on the basis of blatantly circumstantial evidence is the biggest immorality that has occurred here. Do any of these hacks even remember ever having heard the phrase: "Innocent until proven guilty" ? A look at David Vitter's voting record in the House and the Senate and an objective examination of the bills he has sponsored show plainly that he is doing a good job for Louisiana and reaching the goals he promised to work toward when we elected him. If the author wants to snoop out information in Washington and inform the citizens on important issues that are under wraps, she would do well to focus on some unconstitutional bills that are snuck through congress in the dark of night with voice votes and congressionally unconsidered signing statments the President slips onto the end of laws to propogate his growing police state. There are enough real injustices to the American people going on in Washington to be investigated and exposed without wanna be PI's with liberal attack agenda's posing as credible informants. All "the sleuth" has really proved here is that she is more akin to Joan Rivers than Sherlock Holmes.

Mary Ann, you mentioned that Santorum had apparently decided to stay in his Leesburg home, but according to local real estate transfers, he sold his Leesburg mansion a few months ago for a very nice profit. This is somewhat interesting in light of the local real estate market. I wonder who bought it, maybe his new employers.

Posted by: Susan M. Purdy | April 17, 2008 10:23 AM

I am a lifelong La. resident and I have to disagree with the comment that Vitter "is doing a good job for Louisiana". Vitter has been nothing but a rubberstamp and a yes-man for everything Bush and the Republican Party want, regardless of the consequences to our state. They pull his strings and he dances obediently.
David obviously has been a hooker addict for years and he's just now getting caught. I don't think personal lives of elected offcials should be anyone's business but their own but hey, Republicans started this and David was one of the worst finger pointers. He was calling those hookers around the same time that he made the statement that "Clinton was morally unfit to hold office and should resign." That kind of hypocracy is what makes this newsworthy.
I agree with one of the previous posts - David is a disgrace and should resign.

liberals don't hate God, they hate Americans. You can't hate something you don't believe in

Posted by: | April 17, 2008 11:03 AM

the fact of the matter is that no one is perfect. Like, Vitter, Clinton, Kennedy (remember the Chappaquiddick incident?), Craig, and the list goes on, we have all done things that we are NOT proud of. However very few of us can claim to have achieved so much in our professional lives as Vitter, Clinton, Kennedy and all the other Wasington elites have done. Whether or not you agree with their political stances, they have (or were) elected to the offices which they hold (or held) and therefore, since we the people elected them, we have to endure whatever disgrace they may impose on our state or nation. However, dragging out thier sins does not make ours go away, nor does it make them less of a public figure. The state of Louisiana elected David Vitter to do a job...a job that he is accomplishing with great success, vitality, and ability. Yes he made a mistake, but he publically apologized for it, sought forgiveness from his God, wife, and family... and is getting back to work. As should we all.

If we all wore our sins on our forehead we would all have very long bangs.

I object to the holier than thou Republicans and Bush supporters who accuse anyone who doesn't see things their way or worship in the same way they do as atheists or evil in some way and that they are the only holy people on earth. They're all hypocrites. How many of these so called Christians support a president who sends our childred to die in a war he lied to get us into all the while telling us he's pro-life. What part of Pro-life do people like Bush, Dwight and facts matter not understand? Good Christians do not frequent prostitutes either. And I'm sick and tired of these right-wing nuts like facts matter justifying attacks on anyone to the left of them but acting as though they are altruistic and infallible. Besides many of the injustices going on in this country have been perpetrated by the Republicans right-wing. By the way, liberal is not a dirty word and we don't hate Americans or God and we are tired of being accused unjustly. Again the man who lied to get us into a war that subsequently saw the loss over 4000 of our men and women not to mention countless Iraqis was the man of choice for these called God loving and frearing crazies. How can anyone call that patriotic while people starve to death in our own country. Basically the point to Akers' article is the fact that Vitters is a total hypocrite like the rest of the so called pro-lifers right-wing nuts in this country judging others as sinners as though they are on the fast track to heaven.

Really? You wanted the ten trillion dollar debt? You wanted the collapsing economy, the polluted environment, Global Climate Change, our Armed Forces wasted in adolescent dreams of glory, the wholesale corruption of the Department of Justice, the sale of HUD, the dumbing-down of our kids, and the hatred for America in the International Community?

I have to admit, you achieved all your goals.

Correct me if I'm wrong Dave B., but it seems you are asserting that David Vitter alone is responsible for all of the problems we face right now on a National level, because of the fact that he has served in Congress for the last several years...and you use a quote by me about the good Vitter is doing for Louisiana as your basis of debate. What in the world does the culmination of the the nation's woes as a whole have to do with a statement I made about good that is "being done for LOUISIANA"? Did you even scan or reference at all Vitter's voting record or the bills he has sponsored before clammoring about MY goals as a point of opposition? I was sure, and verified by reading again the statement you quoted from my post, that I wrote about David Viter's goals and how he had achieved those. I have included for you here a few highlights from Vitter's record, since it is overtly apparent that you have not done your own research before making uninformed and uneducated assertions about national problems caused more by an administration that is incompetent and blatantly unconcerned with the constitution as well as bellicose toward any citizen that opposes it, rather than being the fault of a single Republican Senator. Lets get a grip on reality and focus on the actual problems that need to be addressed. Unproven gossip about David Vitter is not one of them. Instead of jumping at the chance to automatically condemn Vitter because he is a Republican or because you don't like that he talked about family values as a reason to elect him, why don't you focus your energy on suggesting solutions for some of the problems that have you so hostile that you react to my post without carefully reviewing exactly what I said. The truth is that David Vitter accuately represents and acts on behalf of the the vast majority of his Louisiana constituents. If you aren't in the majority and you don't like the majority's stance on the issues, then why don't you be pro-active in swaying them to your side. David Vitter is doing his job....period!

Here are the facts I mentioned you seemed to have missed:

Highlights of good things David Vitter has and is currently sponsoring in the Senate include :
• A resolution that supports a program to encourage young voter participation
• A bill that would cut off all funding to the United Nations if they were to pass any resolution that took away our second amendment right to bear arms
• A bill to ensure that firearms are not confiscated from citizens in times of emergency as did happen with New Orleans citizens following Hurricane Katrina
• Over 14 bills and resolutions to ensure future emergency preparedness and disaster relief.
• At least 3 bills to make prescription medications more safe, accessible and affordable.
• Bills supporting veterans and ensuring the national defense.
• Bills to safeguard Social Security and Retirement Resources
• A bill to cut unnecessary spending on out of country trips for federal employees.
• A bill that makes registered sex offenders more easily identified
• Several resolutions that give recognition to outstanding Louisiana citizens who have made a difference in our communities.
• Over 10 bills that suspend and/or lower taxes, tariffs and duties collected by the federal government.
• Over 5 bills that support the ecosystem and wetlands of coastal Louisiana
• More than 3 bills that seek out new or untapped sources of energy
• Bills and measures that fight for the right to life for all human beings and eliminate federal funding for abortions.

For two thousand years the same "solutions" have been proposed , advocated and implemented and the mess goes on. The real solution is to dump faith as a means of knowledge and utilize man's unique ability to reason. But that requires questioning the methods and results of the past and questioning is not what faith is willing to accept. Cling to dogma and wonder why progress eludes the human race. It really isn't so complicated. it just requires the guts to stand up to worn out traditions and challenge them.

Posted by: Dale Netherton | April 18, 2008 10:39 AM

Anyone who doesn't think a U.S. Senator who espouses "family values," yet has been linked to a prostitution ring, hides from the press, but shows up at the White House to be blessed by the Pope, just might not have a nose for irony and hypocrisy.
