President Bush's Personal Recession: Jenna's Wedding

While President Bush acknowledged Tuesday that Americans are experiencing "very difficult economic times," he failed to mention his biggest personal financial woe: daughter Jenna's pending nuptials to fiancé Henry Hager.

The cost of the first twin's wedding has become such a running joke at the White House that Fred Fielding, counsel to the president, recently gave Bush a piggy bank to help him save up for Jenna's May 10 wedding at the family's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Fielding, a former father-of-the-bride who feels the president's pain, tells the Sleuth Bush thanked him for the piggy bank but joked, "Not big enough."

Poor Dad. The wedding would have cost him a lot less, of course, had Jenna decided to have it (on taxpayer-funded property) at the White House. Instead, she opted for a more intimate (200 people) and informal wedding on the ranch.

It'll cost many, probably tens of, thousands of dollars just for the bride's organza gown, which is being designed by Oscar de la Renta (read more on that from Vogue magazine), and for the short chiffon dresses that will be worn by the 14 attendants in her house party. Not to mention the food, the booze, the band, the flowers, accommodations, and everything else that goes into the making of a wedding fit for a president's daughter and the son of one of Richmond's oldest and most affluent families.

Fielding says he wasn't invited to the wedding. Few administration officials were. And the White House, in typical fashion, is not divulging any information about the wedding or the guest list, other than to say the event is "private."

"It is not to be a media event," says Sally McDonough, spokeswoman for first lady Laura Bush. (For the record: the Sleuth didn't ask to cover the wedding.)

McDonough wouldn't even say whether Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, were invited. And Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, wouldn't cough up any information either.

The Sleuth hears from good sources in the know that the wedding list was capped at first cousins. None of this "Hi, I'm the second-cousin-twice-removed-of-the-groom" business at the wedding.

But many of the family members and friends who didn't make the cut for Jenna and Henry's big day on May 10 will still get a chance to celebrate -- at the White House, no less!

Our sources say a White House celebration in honor of the couple is planned for the weekend of June 20. The Sleuth anxiously awaits an invitation... we'll let you know what happens.

When can we expect the wedding night video, Jenna and Hank?

It's not a ranch: the father of the bride is deadly afraid of horses.

It's a former pig farm. When will the Post identify it correctly?

My, to just look at the pampered face of the groom to be and to think of our sons in Iraq sleeping in sand holes makes me sick. I guess to those who are only seeing the "big picture" it is fair, the working class does the fighting and dying and the Hagers' of the world do the partying, just like his future daddy in law, some things never change..

I admire the Bush family for their choice to avoid a White House bash. What they spend, who they invite, what they serve, what her gown costs, yadda yadda! What catty talk this all is. Jenna is not lounging on a beach somewhere. She is working, teaching our young people. And Laura is what I consider the ideal first lady. She graces the White House, continues to contribute quietly without fanfare, and is not "dodging sniper fire" in foreign lands with her daughters at her side. I may not agree with all that the powers that be may or may not have done, but let the next president come on and make everything rosy. Let him/her get a congress to work with them rather than bucking them. The next four years will be a test for anyone, Republican or Democrat, and it cannot all be blamed on our current president. Clinton cut our military drastically or we would have had enough to go over there and finish it off.

The Bush presidency has been scandal free and I, for one, must insist that whomever we put in the White House, that family must work towards unifying America, and be a family we can be proud to look up to.

Val Hayes hit it outta da park witth his comment about Clinton's wrecking the military, cutting bases and training, reducing personnel, don't ask etc. Clinton ducked the service, didn't answer the draft call (I know, I know. conviently out of the country studying debate procedures in the UK). Well ... the youth voted him (clinton) in there and they will try to dump OB on us and run his "change" on us. No doubt modeled after Wright's philosophy which surely appeals to those who need vindication for the country's experience with slavery. It was, after all, white men and women who stopped slavery by battling a few white men who bought slaves rounded up, captured and sold by blacks in Africa. The blacks are still enslaving and killing blacks in Africa. If, as Wright says, blacks learn differently than white folk they might use a little help over there, and OB is the guy to send.

New figures for GDP, first quarter are in. No recession for you! Find another word. I suggest "slowdown".

Posted by: Ed | April 30, 2008 10:03 AM

Val, the Bush presidency has been scandal free? Are you saying I've been appalled for 7 1/2 years for nothing? Damn it!!
Also, Jake, thank you for your insightful comments about "the blacks". You sound like you spend a great deal of time thinking about "the blacks". And finally, thank you both for blaming Bill Clinton for something that appears to be a George W. problem. I haven't started a day since late Jan. 2000 without some of that. Thanks again.

Posted by: Val Hays | April 30, 2008 9:11 AM, and actually in all seriousness:

"...And Laura is what I consider the ideal first lady. She graces the White House..."

"Clinton cut our military drastically or we would have had enough to go over there and finish it off."

"The Bush presidency has been scandal free and I, for one, must insist that whomever we put in the White House, that family must work towards unifying America, and be a family we can be proud to look up to."

I personally would prefer a president who is not a dry drunk, has some intellectual capacity, and LISTENS TO HIS POLITICALLY-ENGAGED WIFE rather than his crazy V.P. before he engages in a war against people who previously weren't our enemies.

Furthermore, do you really think the reason we can't end the Iraq war is because we don't have enough $ in the military? It's because there is no way to WIN such a war. Bush Sr. knew that and ended the first Iraq war because he followed the Powell doctrine ("you break it; you bought it").

A family and a President we can look up to?
Reminds me of the candidate who was "a uniter, not a divider" and "compassionate conservatism" but which became the "Decider!":
Accomplishments-
1. Misleading or patently false info used to justify Iraq war
2. Illegal wiretapping & torturing
3. Massive cover-ups in all areas of the Government
4. Selective prosecution of politcal enemies
5. Massive deficits with no coherent long-term economic plan
6. No energy policy with long-term in mind
7. Exponential increase in numbers of persons wishing to do us harm by whatever means necessary

I'll pass on the symbolism of the regal President if we can get a competent one.

Posted by: pgeagle | April 30, 2008 11:00 AM

As to comment by "Jake" re Clinton ducking the service: Did Chaney have 5 or 7 exemptions from the draft? Others in the current administration also "ducked the draft". And let us not forget the actor who also ducked the draft who then came back to make movies and wrapped himself in the flag he would not serve.

Posted by: maurice | April 30, 2008 11:05 AM

So when did Jenna rehabilitate herself? At one time in the not too distant past she had a reputation that would make an ally cat blush!Talk about lipstick on a pig! LOL!

Bush has had a Republican Congressional majority for 6 of the years he's been in office and now tries to blame the Dem's for all his failures.--Wake up America!!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 30, 2008 12:54 PM

Who cares about this wedding anyway? Comments about Soldiers serving in Iraq have nothing to do with her wedding. How about the countless stars that spend and waste thousands for parties or those who forget those Americans who are suffering and instead run around other countries picking kids up like a vaccum cleaner and then proclaim to be an expert about global situations. Big f'ing deal. She is getting married. At her family's ranch not the White House which was a smart idea since you would have thousands of Bush bashers describing how much tax payer money was wasted for the wedding when they can look at their own Congress rep and ask about the billions wasted in useless "earmarks". Find another subject to complain about. Gez, the Clintons had all kinds of mischief during their stay at the White House, it's a wedding.

What about the other twin ? What sort of gown will she get to wear ? Will video be shot there ? Where will the red phone be when Bush walks down the aisle ? What about the other twin ? What's HER name ? Where's the honeymoon ? Wow ! Forget the quagmire ! Let's Party !

Posted by: Shaun Case | May 1, 2008 11:23 AM

The 'other' Twin is seeing ME...no plans for anything yet, at least until this blessed event is put behind us! AND She will be wearing some sort of dress so as not to distract everyone for the Twin who is actually getting married. What quagmire ? What's a red phone at a wedding got to do with me and Jenna's kid sister?
Unfortunately for me...no dowry.

Posted by: Fred Lumbert | May 1, 2008 11:36 AM

They don't go with dowries anymore, stud. Nowadays, it's all ' Mission Accomplished', and 'the night before christmas' and all that stuff...When the Commander in C. gives away the Twin, he'll be wondering when he can hand over the OTHER twin. Believe me, he'll have a red phone hooked up to a cell phone in his lapel. Also, marriage is NOT necessarily a 'quagmire'... Go figure !

Posted by: Charles Horn | May 1, 2008 11:43 AM

Jena and Hank should invite everyone who supported her father to the wedding, with the understanding they would have to contribute $5 trillion that would be used to pay off Daddy's federal debt.

Posted by: MackAA | May 1, 2008 11:51 AM

Get over it ! Who really KNOWS what sort of dress the other Twin will wear down there ? Money AND Family Values mix pretty well, but that does not mean you throw out the OTHER Twin with the proverbial bathwater dowry...I was engaged once. I know something about this sort of thing...It will be a 'red phone at the ranch' sort of weekend...that's only a guess, but it's an educated one.

Posted by: Buck Calhoun | May 1, 2008 11:54 AM

I am apalled that there are actually people out there who would obsessively refer to Jenna's gown, and her twin sister's distraction from the 'main event'. This ceremony is not a 'quagmire' , and shall be paid for with private funds supplied by Bush and his friends . That's what I think . Where's Tom DeLay, and Karl Rove when you need them ? What's the other Twin's name ?

Posted by: Paul Norris | May 1, 2008 12:06 PM

Hey Fred, is Barbara as sweet and clean as she looks? They're both Texas hot, you did good. I'm a Democrat who believes in bipartisanship, especially concerning GOP hotties like Jenna and Barbara.

Posted by: danwatson | May 1, 2008 12:11 PM

Congratulations on the big event and as an American I am proud of the Bush family and would vote them in again, when Jenna has her turn to run for president.

Posted by: bentothemountain | May 1, 2008 12:34 PM

Some of these coments (while obnoxiously funny) have NOTHING to to with this girl. She's getting married for F's sake, at a private ceremony, and she is, most importantly, not her father. Cut her some slack F--kheads!

What ever happened to all the "fixin" the dems were going to do when they "took over" a few years ago?

In the last election the Pro-Israel lobby financed the Bush Election

In the last election the Military Industrial Complex lobby financed the Bush Election

In the last election the OIL monopolies lobby financed the Bush Election

As a result after Bush's election, they were all given Carte-Blanche to do anything they liked !

All three are out of Control !

The Lobby, the Oil-Cartels and the Military Industrial Complex, are so much out of control, that they now run the Government and no
President elected this time can really stop them.

Since the election of Bush, hundreds of Journalists like me who tell the truth have been assassinated, I can prove it. The result is that

other journalists are afraid to tell the truth or are ultimately financed by one of the above monopolies within the corporate press. The plain ordinary American people as a result, do not know what is really happening in the world and cannot make the informed choices at election time as a result.

SO WHERE IS THE BIG MONEY GOING THIS TIME ???

Well the big OIL Cartels and Monopolies are financing Obama !

I am not getting paid for this, so you can work the rest out for yourselves.

IF I SAY ANYMORE , I TOO WILL BE ASSASSINATED ! I'M TRYING TO STAY ALIVE !

200 guests for the wedding??? It must be the people who make up Bush's current approval rating. With 14 attendents and their 14 escorts, more than 10% of the guests will be part of the wedding party - and get their clothes paid for by being there. Maybe Poor Dub's oil riches will cover it all. Or perhaps some of the sole-source contractors Bush has made rich with his war will cough up the food, wine, cake, flowers, travel espenses, and accomodations for this down home nuptual shindig. But no matter what is done, putting Bush forth as some kind of classy guy is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Oh boo hoo for poor w having to pay for a wedding. He should be glad his children are still alive. 35 Iraqi's were killed today in a bomb at a wedding because of the breakdown of society that he created by the destruction of law and order there.

Hundreds of thousands of people are dead because of his incompetence and abject evilness and we're supposed to give a damn that he's put out over having to pay for a wedding.

Who the hell wrote this pathetic excuse for a column? Have they no decency. NO sense of proportion?

I am shocked that no one has thought to think of the plight of BOTH these twins, and the forthcoming marriage of one of them down there at the ranch in Crawford. What will they wear, and when will we know ? I heard one of the twins wants to join the Marine Corps...What's up with that ? What is all this talk about a quagmire ? I think there is a chance that the President will get the whole shebang paid for by the pharmaceutical lobby..!

How lovely! A beautiful bride and a happy groom. After nothing but doom and gloom and the trashing of the President, it's nice to hear about something happy! After the low rent Clinton years, the lying and the cheating, this is refreshing. hope the next occupants of the White House are as decent a family as the Bush Family has been.

ms. akers' snotty tone let's it be known where her opinions are of the President...i'm not begrudging her right to an opinion, but "journalists" should at least make an effort at objectivity....she must be getting lessons from froomkin, the most predictable "journalist" to ever sit in front of a key board...

if akers really wanted to inform her readers, she might provide updates on Jenna's career, where the married couple will live and other points of interest....but she'd rather offer snide remarks....

Posted by: Anonymous | May 4, 2008 8:50 AM

The reason you don't like Froomkin is because facts seem to have an anti-bush bias. Froomkin reports the facts and the facts reflect negatively on your hero Bush.

Posted by: esther clark | May 4, 2008 11:26 AM

As a private matter I extend my best wishes to bride groom and congratulations to the Bush family.

As a public matter, the President has shown his usual lack of political acumen and statesmanship in this matter.

Had they wanted a private wedding, they should have kept the wedding private. A ceremony for family and friends on the Crawford Ranch with the announcements reflecting the family's desire for discretion and privacy.

We can all understand that.

Instead GW Bush wants to have it both ways, he wants to play Daddy Warbucks AND pick on the press and his legion of critics for not respecting his privacy.

Like Daddy Warbucks Bush wants us to know where he got his money, how much of it he has and his contempt for those of us who still have financial concerns that might limit the size and extravagance of our daughters' weddings.

GW Bush, the President, is sending a clear message that class and wealth matter: money talks and suckers walk.

That there is a statiscally unverifiable recession in progress provides the perfect background for the Bush message of extravagance and privilege.

Jenna and Henry have never done you an ounce of harm, and yet, you are so full of pride and ignorance so as to judge them and cast dispersions upon them - simply because she is the daughter of a President that you don't like.

Get a life folks. Your hatred will only hurt you in the end.
