The Portrait of a (HUD) Secretary

Now that Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson has resigned amid scandal, what will become of the multi-thousand dollar portrait of himself that he commissioned last fall to hang on the wall of HUD's new state-of-the-art auditorium?
Currently, Jackson's portrait, and the others he had commissioned simultaneously of the four HUD secretaries before him -- Jack Kemp, Henry Cisneros, Andrew Cuomo and Mel Martinez -- are being stored in the basement at HUD, according to HUD spokesman Jerry Brown. Jackson wanted all five portraits to be painted in record time at a price tag of $100,000, according to a contract solicitation obtained by the Sleuth.
Brown says he isn't sure when or if there will be a portrait hanging ceremony once the auditorium is completed in the next month and-a-half or so. They sort of have more pressing things to worry about at HUD at the moment, such as, well, finding a new secretary.
"The last thing on our mind is the portraits," Brown said. "I'm not sure anyone other than you has given it any thought."
And having thought about it, we wonder: Will Jackson's portrait still be hung at HUD in spite of the specter of a federal criminal investigation that surrounds his resignation?
"I'm not a protocologist, I'm a spokesman" Brown said, chuckling at the seeming absurdity of our inquiry.
When and if there is an unveiling ceremony, Jackson's portrait should hang right next to that of former HUD secretary Samuel Pierce.
When we wrote last fall about Jackson's decision to reinstate the portrait tradition at HUD, we warned it could be an omen. Because the last HUD secretary who had an official portrait painted and hung at the agency was Pierce, President Reagan's appointee, who earned the nickname "Silent Sam" during a sprawling, multi-million-dollar corruption investigation of his agency.
At the time, we wrote: "Let's hope for Jackson's sake that reinstating the portrait tradition isn't an omen - Jackson came under fire last year for admitting that he urged staff to favor political pals of President Bush when awarding HUD contracts."
Sure enough, on Monday, employing one of the oldest clichés in Washington, Jackson announced he was leaving office to "attend more diligently to personal and family matters."
He'll be spending more time with family while the feds continue to investigate whether he improperly steered housing contracts to his Republican cronies and directed his staff to help him.

What a waste of public resources to spend national monies on further glory to the past corrupt HUD directors. It is a monument to the "god of excess and abuse of public trust." SHAME on whomever approved this misuse of money. This money could have been spent on homes for those in the greatest need instead of for the glory of corrupt politicans.

I walk past the HUD building on my way to work most days, and both entrance lobbies were adorned with, I would estimate, 20-30 photographs of Jackson. Pathetic display of low self-esteem. Who authorized funds for such idoltry?

He didn't seem the least embarrased by his firing, in fact he seemed smug that he was responding with killer ripostes to your inquiries. And here all the time I thought that Bush would appoint at least intellectually mature people to his cabinet .

If you think he is the only one, he is not. Pass by the lobby @ 2600 Wilshire Los Angeles City Housing Authority where his pal Rudy Montiel has the same expensive set of himself. He has spent enourmous amounts of money on legal fees, disregarded, demoted, fired, embarassed, humiliated,violated rights,attempted bribery,many of the employees and have done the same to the residents. Alphonso is just a branch on the tree there are many other branches on the HUD tree that will live on if they are not eliminated along with this guy. Chris Dodd continue your cry for the poor and homeless. P.S. don't bother with the OIG there is a protector there also.

You have got to be kidding me. This is an April Fool's joke, right?
C'mon, it's 2008. Why are we still commissioning painted portraits in this day and age when a quick and cheaper photo shoot would do just fine. This is not the president, this is the head of HUD. You know, the people who are supposed to care about homeless people. Not spending thousands of dollars on paintings like the gentry of old. And just who pays for these portraits anyway? (And just really who wants to look at their ugly mugs 10 or 100 years from now anyway?!)
