Rep. John Linder's Embarrassing Exit

It wasn't his most graceful exit, we'll put it that way. Rep. John Linder (R-Ga.) was carried out of Bullfeathers, a Capitol Hill bar and restaurant, Thursday evening, feet dragging on the pavement, as congressional aides enjoying happy hour looked on in amazement.

Two Capitol Hill Police cars and a fire truck were called to the scene.

"They had to hold up him up by the seat of his pants and his arms were draped around their shoulders," says one source, a congressional aide, who asked not to be identified.

Another Sleuth informant who was sitting at the bar says the bartender told him "some older guy fainted from the heat or something."

Linder's spokesman, Derick Corbett, says the 65-year-old congressman didn't faint but he did fall and hurt his knee pretty badly. Linder is scheduled to undergo an MRI medical test on Monday.

"John has a bad knee," Corbett tells us. "He put his foot down the wrong way, and his knee gave out." Corbett wasn't there but he says the congressman told him, "It hurt, and it hurt bad."

Linder was having dinner with his family, Corbett says.

Linder declined help from the police and paramedics who arrived on the scene. Capitol Hill Police spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider tells us police responded to the scene "for a sick individual" but that "the person refused medical treatment."

My god, what is this?
A congressman's knee gives out and it's news? Or are you trying to say he was drunk? What is this? I don't get it.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 16, 2008 9:31 PM

Well of course it is news, i mean as a whole congress writes and votes on laws. So if someone is injured and not able to go to the sessions it could have some effect on the outcome, particularly as things are pretty divided. I'm not sure if it is headline news but it is relevent information.

And for the people who were there, its got to be a pretty weird occurance. They might want to know if he is ok. This is after all local news also. I mean it sucks to have a bad knee, that's the human element of things.

Posted by: Elizabeth | May 17, 2008 1:14 AM

Knee gave out? My foot! He was drunk and out of his mind. Vote the Bums out!

Posted by: Lee | May 17, 2008 8:42 AM

OMG. A congressman is helped out of a Washington, D.C. bar and it makes news in The Washington Post, come on!

Now, if the bar in question, Bullfeathers, was a gay bar, and the congressman was being helped out by a couple of congressional page boys, now THAT would have been news; or maybe not.

Posted by: Wolfe_Tone98 | May 17, 2008 9:52 AM

A congressman goes into a bar standing up, and leaves being carried out. That's probably not unusual in DC, but it still is a story.

Posted by: Larry | May 17, 2008 10:36 AM

Come on people, lower your expectations, when has Mary Ann EVER reported on something that was actually news?

Posted by: Anonymous | May 17, 2008 11:47 AM

I am no fan of Republican congresspeople from Georgia, a number of whose personal lives should make them shrink from, rather than launch, personal attacks on others. (Think Bob Barr. Think Saxby Chambliss. Think Newt Gingrich.)

But based on the facts as reported (a 65-year-old man hurts his leg while having dinner with his family), there's no story, still less any justification for implying that the guy was sloshed.

To the extent that there IS a story, it is that he was having dinner with his family DESPITE being one of the 178 Republicans to vote against Mother's Day.

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll275.xml

But then, Rep. Linder was also one of the 159 Republicans to vote to stiff our troops.

If he WAS drunk, it would be news, since he's the guy who proposed that we quarantine drug users on military bases.

Posted by: writch | May 17, 2008 4:27 PM

This mister bush is absolutely nuts. Manufacturing weapons is one of the main activities of France, Holland, America. Arab and Jewish and other money is invested in this industry branch. When there is no war, we make a few. This is how the western hemisphere survives and overcomes hunger and pollution. So if this pig head really wants to make peace in the middle east there is only one way: "Move Israel with all its cities, holy places en grounds to America or Europe and let the middle and far east peoples write their own history. Let them develop in their own pease. Don't force a democracy on them. Doing so is an imperialistic act. The presence of foreign troops (causes instability and civil wars) in Iraq caused already over 1 million deaths. That is what I call a holocaust. We peoples of the western hemisphere are the worst terrorists of the last 300 years, history proves this as a fact.

Posted by: jwh | May 17, 2008 5:30 PM

What is he trying to hide? Since when did anyone who actually was hurt in an accident refuse treatment? It looks bad for Linder, trick knee or knot.

Posted by: mitch | May 18, 2008 9:41 PM

Pardon the pun but this is a pretty lame story. The only way this rates a mention is if you headlined it "Congressman goes to dinner with his own family." Seriously, with 535 Members doing all kinds of crazy things, either you need better sources or the Post needs a better reporter - probably a combination of both.

Posted by: David D | May 19, 2008 9:50 AM

Isn't there enough real stuff to get these guys on? You just dilute the stuff that helps by putting out vague gossip. No research? Perhaps, like Eddie Izzard, you let your research come to you.

Knees have a curious way of giving way when the alcohol content in the human bloodstream exceeds 0.08%. And this applies to Congressmen as well.

Here's a topic for debate: who is more insightful, Mary Ann or her nutjob commenters?

Posted by: Anne Marie | May 20, 2008 9:26 AM

this reporter is just like nbc news. she cannot get the story right.

Posted by: elmerck | May 20, 2008 10:37 AM

Shameful reporting. The only thing embarrassing is your attempt to embarrass him. His exit was painful and sad. not embarrassing!

A Republican House Rep., known as a Southern, Christian conservative, while having dinner with his family hurts his previously bad knee - medical help is called. He is carried out limping by friends and refuses medical treatment.

Let's see. how do we report this story, for maximum bite and bile?

I know - entitle article and Web posting as "Rep's Embarrassing Exit"

** Rep is in a well-known Capital Hill pub, is observed by many congressional staffers at the bar "enjoying happy hour looking on in amazement", and who refuse to go on the record. man is carried out "feet dragging on the pavement"

** note Two police cars are called (and fire truck)

** "They had to hold up him up by the seat of his pants and his arms were draped around their shoulders," says one source, a congressional aide, who asked not to be identified."

** include quotes from "Another Sleuth informant who was sitting at the bar says the bartender told him..."

** After headline and initial implication that Linder was drunk or "fainted or something", wait until 5th paragraph to say he actually hurt his knee and is scheduled to undergo an MRI the next morning.

** then include he has a bad knee already.

** Then wait until next to last paragraph to include he was eating dinner, not elbowing up at bar, with his family.

And to think we actually believe there is a bias in reporting.

shame on you.
