Rep. Richardson's Mounting Mortgage Disaster
The tale of Rep. Laura Richardson's (D-Calif.) home foreclosure just keeps getting worse.
Despite the congresswoman's claim that her second home in Sacramento (which she bought when she was a state assemblywoman) was not in foreclosure and that the bank had not seized it, published reports suggest otherwise.
The Los Angeles-based Daily Breeze newspaper reports that Richardson defaulted on her mortgage, failed to pay $9,000 worth of property taxes and did, in fact, have her home seized by the bank. Her house, which she reportedly bought for $535,000 in January 2007, was sold at a public auction on May 7 for $388,000, reports the Daily Breeze. (Read the entire story here.)
The Capitol Weekly newspaper, which originally reported the story, also suggests in this story that Richardson was not telling the truth in her statement released last night in which she denied the home foreclosure.
Richardson was clearly eager to get to Washington. At the time she was falling behind on her mortgage payments, Richardson loaned her campaign more than $60,000 to win her hotly contested special election race last year.
The broker who bought Richardson's three-bedroom home tells the Wall Street Journal the congresswoman "walked away from the property. I would be happy to resell her the home for the $535,000." (The price she paid for it.)
No wonder Richardson skipped this year's big vote on the Foreclosure Prevention Act.

Theaz: Yes! In fact, it's my understanding that Richardson is in fact a Superdelegate. Further, she's a Hillary Clinton supporter, having campaigned for Hillary last year in Signal Hill.

Richardson must resign. She is an embarrassment to America.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 23, 2008 10:46 AM
It's time for her to be perp-walked out of the Capitol.
Posted by: tim | May 23, 2008 11:19 AM
She must be a super-delegate. Her decision to walk away from her financial obligation now makes her a super-scofflaw.
Maybe the ethics committee will look into this right after they deal with "cold-cash" William Jefferson! (Neither are likely to happen)

Everything would be solved if William Jefferson would just give Laura Richardson his freezer.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 23, 2008 12:01 PM
Here's a question for a reporter, if there are any real reporters left:
Since the latest version of the Richardson excuse is that she defaulted on her mortage in order to move to DC, did she claim the DC homestead credit, thereby repudiating her California residency and her eligibility to run for Congress?
Posted by: John | May 23, 2008 12:17 PM
Laura has been known for not paying campaign staff after the hard work is done to get her elected, including a single mother of 3 and college students siting poor work performance after the victory comes in.
So it is no surprise she would shrug off paying a faceless bank and think there should not be consequences.
Why wasn't a lien placed on her home in LB to help cover the loss of $200K?
Posted by: Betty Ann | May 23, 2008 12:53 PM
Shouldn't we all be thankful that she didn't get an earmark to pay her mortgage but instead did the responsible thing and abandoned the house?
Posted by: Nancy | May 23, 2008 1:32 PM
Not knowing any of the facts reported in this story, I wrote Richardson (my Representative) on the issue of foreclosures and supporting a proposal to let bankruptcy courts alter the terms of mortgages. I never received an answer to my letter, which to my mind is the most damning thing one can say about a Congressmember.

A number of people have reported that the default was another symptom of the sub-prime mortgage crisis. This makes no sense. Falling home values does not change the payments on a mortgage. Only a change in the interest rate on an ARM can change it. However, the prime interest rate in Jan 2007 was 65% higher than it is today.
She just didn't pay.

Rep Richardson walks on her mortgage obligation, lies about it and the Sanchez sisters Loretta and Linda, pass around staffers who apparently steal taxpayer money to go on vacation. Or engage in kickbacks??
If any of the 3 were Republicans this would have been on Page one of the WP.
Where is the Ethics Committee?
The "new Morality" I guess. We need change.

Rep Richardson walks on her debt, lies about it and Reps Lorettan an Linda Sanchez bothhire a staffer that steals public money "to go on a vacation". Or to hide kick backs?
Where is the ethics Committee?
If they were Republicans they would have already been bounced out.
Time for Change.

She may have ignored the circumstances, which reflects poorly on her character and judgment, but the idea that a public figure like Ms. Richardson can walk away from a debt like this is ridiculous....she's just costing herself more money by mishandling the situation.

NICE--dramatically raise interest rates--and drive yourself right out of business???
The Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2008 provides $200 million for PRE-FORECLOSURE COUNSELING...
Neeeds to be changed to pre-interest-rate-bumping counseling...
A second provision allows bankruptcy judges to modify mortgages...
Should be: Allows a judge to commit morons who drive themselves out of business to mental health facilities...
These modern politicians walked into a bar...--real thirsty after a day of playing grab-a__...
WHAT???!!!

At the time of the purchase for $535,000 she got a loan for 100% value of the home and the sellers gave her 15K for closing cost. So at the time that was a jumbo loan and the money was still available for those type of loans.
But if she already owned a home in Long Beach and then purchase a home in Sacramento that would mean that should would have had to purchase the home as owner occupied. Was this really an owner occupied home? I think the article said Second Home. I am not sure if she would have gotten a 100% second home purchase. I wonder if WAMU (the lender) allowed for stated income and if she lied on the application about the occupancy?
Since she has been lying the whole time - maybe this is case as well.
I wonder what loan application stated??

She's a witch- burn her, buurrrrnnn her. I hope people are being sarcastic whn they describe her as filth, etc., etc. She had some financial problems, made unwise decisions, whatever. I suspect even our leaders are feeling the crunch nowadays - I don't think that amounts to being "filth" -- unless you would describe much of middle America as filth.
Rep. Richardson, much like most of her fellow citizens, has been living well beyond her means. It has caught up to her, I think that is probably punishment enough.

Look, the woman defaulted on a mortgage. She was not a pedophile like Foley, or a bribe taker like Cunningham, influence peddler like Delay, public restroom prowler like Craig, nor a 'family values' hypocrite like Vitter... What! All the Republicans are putting down their stones and slinking quietly away. Is it something I said?

RLAMBERT12, interesting that Foley, Cunningham, Delay, and Craig have all resigned or announced retirement while William (thar's $100,000 in my freezer! woot!) Jefferson and Laura (I ain't payin' my bills, beatch!) Richardson are still sitting pretty in Congress sucking at the tit of the federal taxpayer.

Judge upholds bribery charges against Jefferson
By Susan Crabtree
Posted: 05/28/08 07:49 AM [ET]
A federal judge has refused to dismiss bribery charges against Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.).
Jefferson is accused of orchestrating a complicated, and multi-layered scheme to receive bribes from companies seeking business in Western Africa. Proving bribery against a lawmaker is difficult because prosecutors must show that the defendant provided an "official act" such as a voting a certain way or sponsoring legislation in return for money or items he received. His lawyers argued that Jefferson didn't do anything in his capacity as a congressman that could be considered a bribe.
U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III turned that legal theory on its head in his denial of the motion to dismiss, filed late last week. He ruled that bribery charges could be brought even if the activity in question doesn't appear to fit into "responsibilities assigned by law."
He said it is up to the jury to decide whether Jefferson's promotion or advocacy of certain business projects to the politicians in the African countries and the travel associated with that are related to his duties as a congressman.
In his denial, Judge Ellis declared that the question of whether or not the government is able to prove its bribery case "is a question properly addressed at trial, not on a motion to dismiss an indictment."
Jefferson's trial has been postponed indefinitely while an appeals court considers his legal team's appeal of an earlier ruling on a different pre-trial motion. In that motion, hi s lawyers argued that prosecutors obtained the indictment by unconstitutionally infringing on his privileges as a congressman.

She should resign immediately from Congress. She even voted on the loan
bill to forgive debt to homeowners who
have lost their homes. She did it 3 times
in her effort to gain a Senate seat. That
was her reason.
Do we need more evidence that she is unfit
for office??? If any one says yes, then
they are what is wrong with America today!!

It's disheartening to read mindless attacks against someone who happens to be a public servant who loses their home. Attacks from people who obviously have no real estate acumen. I'm sure if she was Republican the attacks would be flying from the other side as well. I'm not saying Rep. Richardson is not responsible for failing to meet her mortgage payment and she should just admit it. And her reason for not owning up to it was probably out of embarrassment, foolish pride.
The fact of the matter is, there is evidence that finds a strong relationship between negative equity and default. In fact, as much as 90 percent of the variation in foreclosures over time can be explained by negative equity. "Default is essentially instantaneous" when negative equity exceeds 10 percent.
"Greater Sacramento's home values have declined 30 percent since the peak of the housing market in fourth-quarter 2005, according to a real estate Web site.
And almost 70 percent of families in the four-county region who bought their homes in 2006 have negative equity, one of the highest rates in the nation -- Sacramento's home price drop was the fourth-largest in the nation. Almost 55 percent of homeowners who bought last year have negative equity."
RealtyTrac® (www.realtytrac.com), the leading online marketplace for foreclosure properties, today released year-end data from its 2007 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report, which shows a total of 2,203,295 foreclosure filings -- default notices, auction sale notices and bank repossessions -- were reported on 1,285,873 properties nationwide during the year, up 75 percent from 2006. And although the banks don't want to be in the real estate business, they do have the property to re-sell.
And who knows how much Ms. Richardson has already paid into the property??
And talk about financially irresponsible!? How about our government taking a $289 billion dollar surplus in 2000 and plunging the United States into one of the worst deficits in its entire history - Federal Government Debt is $9.2 Trillion!! In 8 years!!

She's not a public servant that just "lost" her home, she's a politician that decided that it was more important for her to continue to rape the American taxpayer than to make good on her own personal obligations. She should me airdropped over Cuba where she doesn't have to worry because the state will own her home/splatting space.
