Cheney Apologizes for W. Va. Incest Joke

UPDATE: Vice President Dick Cheney has apologized through his spokeswoman for making an offhand joke during a speech at the National Press Club Monday stereotyping West Virginia as a state prone to incest.

Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride tells us, "The Vice President's offhand comment was not meant to hurt anyone. On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The Vice President apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."

Cheney's statement came after West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin added his voice to the chorus of outrage from Mountain State politicians and demanded an apology from the veep.

"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter," Machin said in a statement. "West Virginia is home to some of the most patriotic people in the nation and our sons and daughters have answered the call to duty every time a president has needed their service. They deserve better from the vice president, and so I would simply ask for his apology."

And this from Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.): "West Virginians are the hardest working, most decent people I know. Anyone who spends time with them gets it. The Vice President should be more careful about cheap shots aimed at the very people who elected him."

And Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) said, "That a man who has ascended to the seat of vice president of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans. Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia."

ORIGINAL POSTING:

Did Dick Cheney just hand West Virginia to the Democrats, or what?
'Cause his remark at the National Press Club today is bound to rub plenty of folks in the Mountain State the wrong way, especially those who are sick and tired of hearing West Virginia incest jokes. Already, members of the West Virginia congressional delegation - Republicans and Democrats alike - are ticked off.

Cheney was at the Press Club to congratulate this year's winners of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency. During a question-and-answer session toward the end of the luncheon, someone asked the vice president about his wife Lynne Cheney's revelation on MSNBC last year that "Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins."

The questioner jokingly asked the vice president if he and Obama were going to have a family reunion, to which Cheney replied he would "have no objections" though he said he doubted Obama would want one - "certainly not before November."

Then came the offensive punch line. Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne's memoir "Blue Skies, No Fences" last year, he learned there were Cheneys on both his father's and his mother's side of the family. There was a Richard Cheney on his mother's side, the vice president said.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

West Virginia politicians aren't laughing at Cheney's little joke, including his fellow Republican, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.).

"This is exactly the type of stereotyping that we don't need from our elected officials," Capito tells the Sleuth. "It's disrespectful, and it's certainly not funny. The Vice President should know better than to make a remark like this one. We all work hard to further West Virginia's good name, only to have comments like this tarnish it. As a proud state, I can say we are disappointed."

Rep. Nick Rahall
, a 16-term Democratic congressman from West Virginia, was equally as irate. "We may owe the vice president a debt of gratitude for yet another great West Virginia slogan: Dick Cheney is not from here," Rahall told us.

As much as I detest Cheney, he just scored a point with the Chief.

I don't think anyone will notice. This will have zero impact in the election and will blow away by Friday if not tomorrow.

in my "elitist" view (as a person whose father once worked in Moundsville and who spent some time in Wheeling), the people of the mountain state aren't really paying attention anyway. If they haven't yet noticed that Bush's rules allowing mountain topping to mine coal is polluting their water, they probably won't care about a slur that has been around for ages. They made their decision in 2000 and 2004 and they don't seem to want to change. It is sad, really. It is such a beautiful state and the people have always been friendly to me. I am sorry they don't seem to realize that the "Republic Party" thinks of them as mindless drones and easy to finagle. Sad.

Cheney is the poster boy for incest...deranged megalomaniac.

Posted by: Toomy | June 2, 2008 4:44 PM

I doubt if West Virginians are smart enough to figure out they've been insulted.

Posted by: oddball | June 2, 2008 4:48 PM

Hey Sleuth, please call up some GOP West Virginia lawmakers and ask THEM what they think of this.
I love to see Republicans wriggling.

Heck, I'm a democrat and I think the joke was great! We all know it was tongue & cheek, so why get offended? This is a non-issue, no-big-deal thing.

Except to headline making journalist who forgot what a newpaper REPORTER was... you guys are barely credible now, don't push your luck...

Shoot, at the very least, 'ol Dick's admitting to a family tree with one branch...

I didn't find the joke offensive, just not funny. West Virginia = incest, wow haven't heard that one before.

Sounds like it hit Jim-Bob Rahall a little close to home.

Gerald Ford was a reporter?

Posted by: Anonymous | June 2, 2008 5:38 PM

As someone who lives in West Virginia I am hardly offended by this ignorant comment. Especially coming from a man who continues to demonstate his complete incompetence on a daily basis.

Charming.

Cheney should have just told the story about the good old days when he was unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter of the KKK......oh wait that was Robert Byrd, who has represented these sensitive West Virginians for 45 years

Can they even read in West Virginia to be insulted by this article? Who cares anyway. McCain will win this state hands down.

Posted by: GOGOP | June 2, 2008 5:48 PM

Those people are too ignorant to even know they were insulted. Incest to them is a way of life not an insult. They are too dumb to vote their own interest, they deserved everything they get.

Well, it wasn't funny but it does give an opportunity for Republicans to distance themselves and look like they can attack the Bush Administration too in WVA. As optimistic as I am for a Dem landslide in the fall, I'm not dreaming that Republicans in WVA will vote any different than usual.

Posted by: Larry | June 2, 2008 6:01 PM

Wow, Cheney's a jerk , but this sure touched a nerve with the W. Virginians... Maybe incest isn't in current practice, but they still can't get out of their own way. I doubt they'll wise up and realize that Republicans haven't been on their side for a *long* time. The state will support the Republicans this time around, too. After all, quality education is still relatively out of reach and McCain looks more their kind than Obama...

Posted by: CAC | June 2, 2008 6:11 PM

Cheney, the guy who will write a book about how he dodged the Draft.

Wonder how he'll like it when a few folks from W. Va make jokes about his daughter??

I would like say that I as a West Virginian was smart enough to realize that the state of West Virginia was insulted, but I give Dick Chaney my prayers because only a very sick person would say that.Let alone the vice president of our great United States.By the way,I'm only 12 years old.

Look, if "hardworking whites" and "maybe he'll be shot like RFK" doesn't disqualify Hillary, this modest crack shouldn't be any news.

Speaking of, how do you know that the toothbrush was invented in West Virginia?

Because if it was invented anywhere else, it would be called a teethbrush!

Have you ever been to West Virginia? Dim-witted rednecks in pickup trucks with Confederate flag license plates, all parked out in front of their neighborhood Walmart. If you ever wanted to know how Bush could be elected ...twice!, just visit any WVa. Walmart on a Friday night. You'll know then how President Poop For Brains made it to the White House. This is Bush's base. Yeeee haaa!

I am sure that, regardless of their relationship, more West Virgnians have served and died for their country than Deadeye Dick can count. If Obama's pastor said this it would be the lead story.

I think that a lot of the comments about this have been personal attacks about my great state of WVand should be removed. Yes we have poverty and we have rednecks and yes I am sure we have incest but I'm am also sure we are not the only state that does.
I have traveled all over the United States and wouldn't trade my one acre in WV for all the slums and down trodden areas in NYC, Washington DC,and Detroit just to name a few.
So if all you highly educated people especially the ones from N. Va and Dc area thinks our state is so backward stay the heck away from our condo's and ski resorts. Ski down 18th street and see how backward WV is.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 2, 2008 7:14 PM

Cheney's comment is just plain stupid, much like many of the posts here. Reading through the insults, it will be interesting to see if the WP enforces its own policy, "User reviews and comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site."

In my 49 years of walking this planet it has been my experience that those who must insult and demean others usually have their own issues and believe they must demean a group so they can feel good about themselves. Here is a hint for you: try to be positive. While it is much more difficult to be positive than negative, at the end of the day you will feel better about yourself.

Posted by: Dan | June 2, 2008 7:14 PM

Thanks for the insightful article and the lovely comments thread from Republicans and Democrats alike. Most people from West Virginia have heard all the incest jokes they care for and they complain when they hear them over and over again. I hope the Shelley Moore Capito voters remember this insult came from her party leader even though she acting a little huffy. Now if you were to discuss political nepotism that might be different, eh Shelley, Joe?

Cheney Besmirches Virginia to excuse his own dirty family secrets.

The usual NeoConMen trick, accuse an innocent of your very own crime so you muddy the waters.

When NeoConMen speak all I hear is spin, lies and talking points.

McClellan's confesses and Trent Duffy and the rest of the Republicommie NeoConMen all begin parroting the same talking points; like good little apparatchiks in their oh so commie bubble. Hey! George, where are the tractor production figures? For White House read Pravda on the Potomac. America Awaken the Reds are in The White House beds!

The NeoConMen create 10 Trillion Dollars of US Tax Debt with Republicommie Pork subsidies for the likes of Halliburton, Blackwater and KBR and all those other Republicommie companies that went to Iraq to suck on the US TAX TIT. Cheney even gave his bankrupt company the worlds biggest ever Social Security Cheque 8 billion dollars of No Bid Contracts. Then they whine about congress spending a 62 million of Medicaid for the USA's poor.

Cheney's dirty family secret comes out and he hides behind a smear on Virginia. If a US Ambassador has served the Nation for decades and he says the intelligence you want to use to lie America into war is wrong then then smear his wife and out her as a CIA agent. Not a thought for others or even the nation. Only the selfish whining of a bunch of commie traitors

But now the American People see the NeoConMen for what they are:

THIEVES, TRAITORS AND LIARS who care only for themselves.

It is time to gather the evidence.

It is time to begin the investigations.

It is time for the American people to have their revenge.

We can see the signs as the traitorous rats savage each other in desperate search for a way out of their sinking ship.

The prosecutors should only let the first to rat on the others have immunity.

Soon Bush will be out of power and can no longer issue pardons.

Then the American People can have their revenge as a dish of Cold Hard Justice.

The Day of Reckoning is coming.

Joke for Dick Cheney. I'd like to know if Cheney ever had a herosexual relationship. In his efforts to dodge the Vietnam draft he got kicked out of beau coup colleges as being to dumb. Then in order to contiue his draft Dodger status somehow Lynne got pregnant in a hurry. What member of his family was the donor? I have known a view West Virginians and I'll tell you they were much more intelligent than anything anywhere in the Republican White House.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 2, 2008 8:57 PM

My brother-in-law Warren W Burnett a former Police Officer here in the Monsey NY area of Ramapo Township NYS once quoted himself as saying " I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken." How true he was.
While this might be true if it were a game the real reason the VP is making unregarded remarks these days is that he's being chased down by the likes of those he will know longer support because they have lied to him.
So before they get him I'll spill the beans here.
The Vice President of The United States of America Dick Cheney and Family are hipper then the whole President Gerald Ford Family put together. The VP and his family have put them to shame. Betty Ford's breast cancer candidness and her remarks about her childrens pre-marital sex and marijuana use is nothing to what is going around in my neighborhood. It seems that Mr Cheney has aritficially impregnated his daughter Mary's wife Heather Poe in order to bear Mrs and Mrs Poe and Cheney an heir unto themselves. Cool? What a grandfather. My friends are even thinking about voting for Senator McCain.
Lowell Cheney is about the luckiest guy on Earth right now. On May 23 2008 the little future star of whatever he wants to be had his first birthday.
You can read his birth announcement in the NYTimes on May 23 2007 in the article about Governor Corzine of NJ.
Look in the article for the words "circles followed by the word "circle" followed by the name Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
What's this about? The whole thing was recorded in a cryptogram which ended with the VP's grandson's birth that day. The newest Cheney was supposed to received a SSA# starting with 101. This is an abbreviation for AKA or also known as. Fortunately supporters of Lowell himself like me dePaul Consiglio the origainal 101 SSA# holder interupted this whole thing by holding the line as they say and confused the whole article. The word circle between circles and Clinton ended the possibility of adding the digits 964814 spelling out RODHAM after 101 in order to circle out of office Senator Clinton. This was not another Dirty Trick by CREEP. This was the democrats trying to put the name CHENEY written as 38557 after 101 in order to influence and listen in on Republican Party goings on. But it wasn't Senator Clinton's people that did it. It was Senator Obama's ourtermost circle that tried to do it. The are so cock sure of themselves this year that they had to guarantee it even going to the extent of catching the Cheney Family in the act of Conception. So as it goes the Vice President has been sometimes finding himself having to defend his remarks and whereabouts and accidents during hunting trips or slipping up about incest.
This is unfortunate for him and for the Clinton and Obama camps.
If the number was issued like a few before those that hold them unfortunatly could become very disabled by the numbers issuance. Why? It's unAmerican that's why.
Take it from me I have nothing because of my number 101423386. I've even written to my repesentatives for an explanation but they refuse to even answer after I've explained.
I know the US being a democracy this year and not a republic went about doing a circle on The Cheneys. They did a circle on me and convinced everyone I was wrong until now I have nothing.
I know it will be different for Lowell. So
remember to send him a birthday card next year. He will be in his "terrible twos".
So make up your mind this year when you vote. I suggesting that you all go out and register to do so . But as for me I'll vote for myself this year until the US Government gives me an explanation.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 2, 2008 9:48 PM

Those who think this will blow over and be nothing: Maybe you should 1st poll the West Virginians serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe also poll the families of WV soldiers killed there. To have a sitting -- not former or elderly or senile -- VP of the United States of America severely insult one of his own 50 states is outrageous. Not only that, he's not insulting MA or NY or some other way liberal state; this is a state that cast 1000's of votes for him to be VP twice, and is generally quite conservative. I guess deeply insulting 1/50th of the senators over which you preside (as senate tie-breaker) is "family values" in Dick Cheney's mind.

May I remind you, Mr. Cheney, that West Virginians were at least intelligent enough to associate with the North in the Civil War, with the WV counties breaking away from Virginia, something that must have taken a lot of guts to do. Guts that you, Mr. Cheney, didn't have enough of to even serve in Vietnam.

What a total idiot....

Posted by: Steve | June 2, 2008 9:50 PM

Dick and George both cut and ran from VietNam. As Dick put it "He had other things to do" like babysitting. So maybe he should apologize to the family members of those 4,000 plus brave soldiers who he sent to there deaths so he could make money from Haliburton. His stock in a blind trust went from $40,000,000 to $400,000,000. Now he made a lot of money from those brave Men and women from W. Virginia who fought in this fight and died in fight he and George can't finish. Now if don't see the truth and let him get away with this huge crime then you deserve his insults because he is getting away with it at your expense.

I'm from Indiana, where I have "endured" (boohoo!) this trivial banter all my life and it didn't traumatize me one bit. In fact, it instilled in me a sense of pride - in who I am & in the fact that as an American, I can still say these things! I think that his remark was far from being a joke. No wonder why they call him Dick!!! I don't feel that anyone in office should make any kind of remark as he did by any means. I think a person like "Dick" should step down from his position!!!

I think that both Bush & Cheney has wore their welcome out and they both need to take a long walk off a short pier. I am sick of the blood sucking politics. It is time for a change. There are towns in far western North Carolina where everyone has red hair and looks the same. Coincidence, don't think so!

Posted by: Dr. Will | June 2, 2008 10:19 PM

The real shame is that none of us are allowed to laugh at ourselves anymore in this age of self flagellating so called political correctness. We have enslaved ourselves for no good reason. I remember the Dean Martin roasts of the 1960's before Americans became afraid to laugh at themselves. Shame on all of you. Now we Americans live like the Soviets did during the 1950's---we have to look over both shoulders before we share a joke with a friend. Just imagine the world your children will have to try to survive in.

It's sad to think the folk in WV would vote against their own self interest. Voting for Reagan was bad enough, but these two!

Cheney has insulted the people of my home state WV. He has pretended he is from TX. He has insulted veterans by differing from the Vietnam War 5 times and deceiving the US into the Iraq War. He has broken laws and hurt national security in the Valerie Plame case. He has lined his pockets with the American treasury through Halliburton and made energy policy with his oil buddies all the while ignoring the law and the US Constitution.
He is a war criminal, a criminal on par with Richard Nixon and he will get his just desserts in the end.

When asked about service in Vietnam, Dick Cheney said he "had other priorities at the time". I imagine those who died in that war of non-necessity also had other priorities at the time -- like watching their kids grow up, having grand kids, living out their futures. The privileged got deferments (for college, which was a very privileged pursuit those days), the average Joe died in combat. To have these draft avoiders be todays war-hawks and war-barons is hypocrisy at its worst. But then again, Republicans pound their chests and vote for their ilk with delusional fervor. I wonder if they will do so even after being insulted by them.

Posted by: Keelaay | June 2, 2008 10:24 PM

Posted by: Hen | June 2, 2008 10:26 PM

I don't think anyone should make any kinds of remarks against the Vets that were in Vietnam. I had a Daddy that fought in Vietnam when I was 2 years old and he was in Aging Orange above his ankles and now my Daddy has been gone for 5 1/2 years for fighting for our country. He died in the VA Hospital in Huntington and it was from Cancer from the Aging Orange. There were 5 other individuals on the floor at the hospital where he was and they all had the same type of cancer and were all in Vietnam at the same time. Dear God please place your hand upon individuals like Dick Cheney and please forgive them for all their wrong doings. God Bless this Country.

I moved to WV from TX and would take WV over TX any day of the week.

Since all of you must read at least some parts of the newspaper, I don't think I should have to spell out for you the implications of my statement regarding TX.

This is especially applicable in light of the state of residence of the utterer of the comment in question, as well as recent events in TX that one can read about on the first page of this fine publication.

To wit, I think it's quite interesting that one who claims TX as his state of residence would have the intestinal fortitude to comment on aberrant sexual practices by specific geographical location.

Posted by: WV rez | June 2, 2008 10:34 PM

The venom and disrespect shown in alot of these comments is exactly what they hope for. The 'us or them' mentality keeps us squabbling about trivial things, unable to reach compromise and understanding, and thwarts the great power of this country - the people's will.

Cheney should apologize - it's what civil people do when they've said something to hurt someone else. It's what a person of integrity would do. It's what my parents taught me and I hope my Grandson will learn.

We need decent leaders and we need to quit hurting each other.

Posted by: squiddlywonk | June 2, 2008 10:36 PM

Republicans are the true "elitists", the behind-the-scenes big business tycoons that manipulate our government and laugh all the way to the bank.

Cheney and his kind are the elitists, not goofy Hollywood celebrities who just want attention and walk around trying to get quoted...

My hat is off to the Republicans for flipping it so that the ignorant poor are tricked into voting against their own self-interest.

The West Virginia Supreme Court recently issued a ruling that stated that even though a married couple gets divorced, they're still considered to be brother and sister.

Posted by: Nick in Virginia | June 2, 2008 10:41 PM

Crude? Sure. I'm no fan of Dickie, but honestly, even in writing, it is plain to see he was merely trying to be humorous.

It irks me that people go nuts over something like this and yet pay good money to watch a comedian like Chappelle.

The problem with America isn't that evil men like Cheney exist, it's that thin skinned people exist. If I were a West Virginian, I'd give a polite smile at Dickie and cronies and then vote for an independent. Nothing infuriates politicians more than losing an election because his votes went to a third party. No need for all this PC 1984 speak. Actions will speak loudly enough. I guess we'll find out how insulted West Virginians were come November.

Don't forget, you can always write in any person you wish at the ballot.

ok, if someones family has been in the us for more than say 5 generations, you WILL find were there are cousins that have married. Its a proven fact. Go back to Europe pre 1700 and you will find it even more so. In past times with a smaller population, there were fewer choices for spouses, cousins married all the time, its not as bad as people believe. Its a fact that most people who do genealogy research already know. Also, just because two people have the same last name, doesn't mean they are related, in fact, with most surnames, its about an 85 percent chance that you aren't, or at least not with in 8 generations, which beyond that, it truly doesn't matter, except to genealogist and geneticist.
If you believe in Christianity, Judaism, or Islam, then you by default believe that all humans descend from incestuous relationships. Point being: get over it.

That being said:

When you get to West Virginia, what does the sign say?
Welcome to West Virginia,
Population 1,808,344:

(population number from the 2000 census)

Sick Dick. To vote for Bush was to keep Teresa Heinz Kerry from running the county. We figured as arrogant as Dubya is he would keep Dick inline. If you don't like WV Dick, Don't come back to the Greenbrier or any other place in WV. We don't like your dumbass anyway. The people of WV have rallied for all the wars, carried over for Kennedy's, Donated time, blood, sweat and tears whenever there was a crisis anywhere in this great land. Yet, we get made fun of. Why? Because outsiders dont know us. Nor do they care. Obama, I was going to vote for you until the comments your staff made and the craziness about your church made front page. So, we have a few holyrollers, at least they are honest about it, and don't change their story when confronted or disown their own church to win. We honor our friends, our family's and our country. SlickDick, come on over, take your shoes off, sit a spell, you never know whats gonna come outta the holler....Shesh.

People, including those from the beautiful state of WV:

Getting married to a COUSIN is not - I repeat NOT - incest!!!! Beyond that, having two people with the same last name doesn't mean they are related!!!! Sheesh!

In other parts of the world, many people would have taken Cheney's comment to mean that everybody in the the area is related to one another, mainly because people traditionally had larger families in the past and the mountainous terrain made it more difficult for people to marry someone from far away.

I agree Cheney's joke was tasteless, and frankly, not particularly funny. I agree that it's especially not funny if you are on the receiving end of it. But at least keep your facts straight.

Frankly, I think incest in WV is much less of a problem than a whole new generation of WVians refusing to vote for someone simply because he is black. To me that shows a disappointing lack of thinking in a people who are otherwise sincere and decent.

It's a pity Cheney wasn't bright enough, or sensitive enough, to come up with a better joke. It's even more of a pity that he couldn't even appologize in person for his pejorative words.

I'm not originally from West Virginia, but lived there for five years, in Morgantown. What I found there were the finest, hardest-working, most genuine people I've ever met. I have a Masters degree from an Ivy League university, and I met many people in West Virginia, including many who attended WVU who were as intelligent, thoughtful, and insightful as most I met in the more prestigious places I've been.

If you're out there criticizing West Virginia, you are doing it out of your own ignorance, a state in which you no doubt repeatedly find yourself. Grow up and look at yourself. If the best you have to offer is to criticize good people, then you indeed have nothing to offer at all.

VP Cheney's remarks were rude and hurtful. He should be embarrassed, as should you.

As a WV native who has lived in other parts of the country and abroad, I am neither surprised nor offended by Dick Cheney's inference to incest in WV. I pride myself in knowing that I can only be "led" by someone I perecive as being smarter than I am. He sets the bar pretty low, and therfore, could never get my vote of confidence on any level. Stereotypes have been around longer than I have been on this earth. As a Black woman from WV, I've heard more than my fair share. Still, I find comfort in knowing that my parents worked hard to instill a good work ethic and sense of personal and collective responsibility; provide a good education for me; and foster a sincere concern for others. I know plenty of educated fools and most of them do not originate from WV. I am proud to be a West Virginian, regardless of the countless jokes and jabs that come my way from outsiders or insiders for that matter. Having lived in various states and countries during 23 years of fatithful service to her, I can only say each state/country I've been to is no better/worse than WV.

What you all have been doing is something called "projection" - attributing one's own undesirable traits to other people. Used often by people who suppress deep-seated inferiority complexes and overcome it by heaping insults on people they think cannot defend themselves. Cowardice at its "finest."

Naw, we West-by-God-Virginians aren't mad at you - we pity you. I hope y'all can find the courage to overcome your insecurities. As an observant West Virginian who lived many years in DC, I heard many such remarks. It grew tiresome (like the ignorant posts here), but I wasn't particularly insulted. My grandma always told me that anyone who must put down other people to puff him-/herself up is to be pitied.

Yes, I was mortified by the 2004 election and the recent primary results in WV, but I wasn't especially surprised. The state has a sad history of being conned---first by the timber industry, then (and still now) by King Coal and chemical companies, and often by our own politicians--Republican and Democrat alike.

My Republican neighbor confided to me the other day that he has always mistrusted "colored people," but that he has decided to vote for Obama because "he seems like a good man who wants to do the right thing." He could have been describing himself. Here's a man brave enough to take a chance on something different because he realizes the old ways just aren't working. I hope many of our other neighbors come to the same conclusion.

How patronizing and insincere for the Vice President to make that disgusting remark only to have somebody else appologize for him. He needs to do that job himself. He is a crude, crass old curmudgen who should be put out to pasture. Not standing at a podium making sick jokes about the citizens of the country in which he is Vice President. Just because, as he said, he isn't running for office, doesn't make it appropriate for him to imply that people in West Virginia practice incest. He has shown time and time again that he has no respect for the American people or what they want. He thinks that he and Bush can do what ever they want and the will of the people be damned. This petty criminal thug has done irreparable damage to this country and should be in jail. Instead he gets invited to important places to spew his evil rhetoric.

This country is really going downhill, and fast. Jews are being shot and killed for being Jews (Seattle) and synagogues are being torched (Miami). The public unblinkingly accepts Obama's references to "typical white" people and his widespread associations with racist hate-mongers and domestic terrorists. And now it's permissible again to ridicule and humiliate the good people of West Virginia? I guess we're really behind the times here in the Mountain State: Hate isn't fashionable here (yet). All in all, I hope we in WV can remain remote, well removed from the "progress" that is polluting - and ruining - the rest of the country. And in the meantime, I'll see what I can do about changing those signs at entrances to the state, from "Wild and Wonderful West Virginia" to the more simple, good and old-fashioned "KEEP OUT."

His Family Tree???
Obviously one branch short of a twig! Idiot, he is not even funny. PLEASE, DO QUIT THE DAY JOB! Oh, you will be out of the day job, LOL! Many jokes could be made about your family... their sexuality, but nah, why waste anyone's time... you are not worth it!

Mr. Cheney, you were given a historical vote from the state of WV I'm sure in large part because of our military population. Being a military wife myself I am in disbelief you would be so ignorant to literally bite the hand that fed you. I guess past tense is key here, right? You no longer need our vote; however, the Republican party does and I'd like to personally thank you for blowing that. I've lived all over this great country and have encountered what is perceived to be backward, ignorant people in every state I've resided in. Unfortunately, we're hit with an undeserving stereotype. I'd like to believe what you've said will fade with time but I'm afraid people will remember this come November. You are obviously ignorant and ungrateful. I'm proud to say I'm a Mountaineer. I'm a military wife and proud of my military and my family who has served and today I'm very proud of the fact YOU are not from my home state of West Virginia. I'm sure Mr. Whittington is too.

I don't find the "joke" that offensive, but then again, I'm not a West Virginian. What I do find offensive is Cheney and Bush's hypocrisy. They tout family values yet Cheney makes light of incest, which often results in rape and/or birth defects.

As for Bush, the list goes on and on ... i.e. Bush telling Cheney that NY Times reporter Adam Clymer was "an *sshole" when he didn't realize the mike was on. BUsh refused to apologize. Then there was the video of him sticking his middle finger to reporters. And who can forget him giving an unsolicited massage to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during dinner? Hey Georgie, this was an diplomatic dinner among world leaders, not a hoedown with pals at your ranch. It's known as sexual harrassment. I won't even get into Bush's frat boy days where he had a C- average and majored in booze.

Then there was mom, Barbara Bush, who implied that vice-prez candidate Geraldine Ferraro was a b*tch ("it rhymes with witch"). And of course the Bush daughters with their false IDs, underage drinking and being rude to reporters. COmpare them to the maturity of Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton.

Has there ever been a first family so non-representative of Family Values??? It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't claim to promote it. But as things stand, they are the most hypocritcal First Family of my lifetime. The again, why should I be surprised by the contradiction? After all, Bush calls himself "the Education President" Hahahaha!!! What a joke. A sad sad joke.

Posted by: sdc | June 3, 2008 8:05 AM

RE: the above message about Bush sexually harrassing Germany's first female Chancellor, Angela Merkel, here's a link. Watch poor Merkel's face. Keep in mind that this is the G-8 Summit -- a meeting of the world's most powerful leaders. It is NOT an informal event. The world's press was watching. Furthermore, it was in Russia, not Bush's own country. God, Bush is such an embarrassment. The Europeans have known it for a long time (one German politician called him "an idiot"). Americans have finally realized it too.

Chreney's just doing his bit to normalize the politics of insult. He's pushing the envelope that future candidates will float in. I mean, we are talking about the author of "So?" and yet cruder epithets. This is just Cheney as Dennis Miller. Plenty of yucks in Freeperville. Dick: he's such a card.

It's been a successful right-wing fascist tactic for decades.

Posted by: JMarra | June 3, 2008 8:46 AM

Tasteless remarks under the guise of humor.? Hmm. I wonder if they are just as funny when they are turned on tricky Dick? I have lived in a mobile home, so I'll take his comment as full license to try completely inappropriate jokes that aren't funny, but hey I'm stupid, uneducated and don't known any better right? What's Dick's excuse other than the fact that he sprung from Satan's loins?

Say what you will about Dick Cheney but he has completed one important function as Vice-President: shooting lawyers.

The NRA should be quick to point out that guns don't shoot people. Dick Cheney shoots people.

Inbreeding jokes by elitists go together like Republicans and lesbian daughters.

Hey Dick-are you done raping America yet or do you intend to pay for her services with Halliburton stock at some point? Ha ha. That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.

Posted by: goober | June 3, 2008 8:58 AM

Strangely, if Cheney's comment would have been related to race, gender, or religion, this would have been a big deal. Truthfully, I find the comment offensive because it is generalizing a large group (in this case, a state). Why is it ok to poke fun at the expense of West Virginians?

Some of the abovementioned comments are baffling to me. For the record, this is a topic of conversation in West Virginia today. It may come as a shock to some people that a large portion of the state can: 1) read, 2) comprehend the same things people from other states can, and 3) go to college (and even...gasp...get doctorates). Did you know West Virginians have running water and high speed internet access? Did you know that not every part of the state drives pick up trucks with confederate flags and shops exculsively at Wal-Mart? Of course not, because many of you took the lazy way out and allowed yourself to fall for a stereotype that is not entirely accurate.

I am, in fact, a born-and-raised West Virginian. I went to college, studied abroad in Europe, and managed to obtain two bachelors degrees and a masters by the age of 25 (currently working on my doctorate). My parents are unrelated, highly educated individuals. I am not an anomaly or an isolated incident. Now, I have a job at a relatively prestigious institution on Capitol Hill. Shockingly, those who meet me cannot tell I'm from West Virginia until I point it out to them--which I proudly do. Why? Because while my state has done some stupid things (2000, 2004...) and may not think or act the same as others, they are kind, hardworking, humble people. I can't exactly say the same thing for those I am surrounded by in the DC area.

When you hear the same tired stereotype your entire life, it gets a very old. Put yourself in my shoes, you probably wouldn't find it funny if you were me.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family ..."

Just to make one thing clear: having members of the same family in both the mother's and father's families is much more likely due to the marriage of cousins than incest (which is the marriage of siblings).

Marriages between first cousins (people with the same grandparents) is legal in about 20 states. Marriages between 2nd cousins (people with the same great grandparents) is legal in all states.

Marriages between 2nd and 3rd (or 4th, 5th, etc.) cousins are very common, especially in rural areas and small towns. Especially if people don't have the opportunity to travel far from home and family. If families stay in one area for a long time, and if they are restricted to marrying people of the same race and religion, then it's very likely that cousins will get married.

Posted by: Ted | June 3, 2008 9:30 AM

Yes, it's a joke on WV. Wow, that's something new.

If everyone looks back in their family history, they will probably find an incident that is suspect (possible incest), as Dick found out here. Let alone that the most famous family in the world has been inbred for years - the royal family.

I am proud to be from West Virginia and I take all of your jokes to mean that you are envious not to take pride in your origins.

That is your problem not mine, you ignorant swines.

"West" Virginia isn't even a real state.

Posted by: duh | June 3, 2008 9:45 AM

Ok, I am from WV and I chuckled at the joke. In fact, the best incest jokes I have heard I heard in the used to be beautiful, strip mined mountain state.

Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and move on. The real threat to WV are comments like, "I didn't vote for him 'cuz he's from that other race that we have so much trouble with.", or, "He's a Muslim and I have a problem with that.", or " His name is Hussein and we've had enough of that." All comments from WV democratic voters after the primary.

Let's please get our priorities sorted out.

Get a sense of humor! You keep electing Byrd for office (is he still alive?) What's the West Virginia slogan now? Is it "Open for Business"? Sounds like a brothel! And the Democrats let something like a joke get them fired up? Get a new slogan. What was wrong with "Wild, Wonderful West Virginia"? It's a beautiful state. Lived there most of my life but I have opened by eyes regarding politics and do not just think what Byrd tells me to think.

i am from wv, from now on i believe everyone should identify which state they are from before they make their comments. This is a great way to evaluate where ignorance is festering. Also, I don't care about jokes, every state has jokes made about, people should to calm down. I would rather you take a shot at the entire state, than take shots at individuals. I just can't believe people do not have better things to do than comment on this website all day. I feel bad I sat hear and read this thread. Oh well, I guess people who make fun of WV are right, I am from WV and I was foolish enough to read and resond to this rubbage.

I cannot believe all the comments on this page. I am a West Virginian and am deeply offended that our VP would publicly make such a comment about the people from my state. I am a West Virginian who DID want change and did NOT vote for the Bush/Cheney duo. I think the comments made by several here, that found the joke humorous and "point-scoring", just prove that all the idiots are not from West Virginia, they are from all over this great nation. Ignorance is bliss for you fine folks that appreciate Cheney's rude comment.

WV rules.
The sleuth is a joke. They post an article about cheney's inappropriate comment directed toward an entire state, but when I write my oppinion about DICK cheney it gets censored.

"We encourage users to analyze, comment on and even challenge washingtonpost.com's articles, blogs, reviews and multimedia features.

User reviews and comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site."

Looks like the sleuth should step up on cheney's comments and remove them from the site.

Posted by: RJ | June 3, 2008 10:43 AM

The only reason that this is offensive is because the truth hurts.

Posted by: Denny | June 3, 2008 10:48 AM

First, i would like to start by saying that as the former Miss West Virginia National Teenager 2007,and as a regualr West Virginia resident, I am HIGHLY offended by the remarks made be Vice President Cheney and most of the others who have posted comments on here-- saying we, as West Virginians, are too stupid to even pick up on it, or "oh it was no joke". And you people wonnder what is wrong with today's world--LOOK AT YOU! You all sterotype bases on a REGION of the country?! Well guess what, I COULD NOT BE MORE PROUD TO BE FROM WEST VIRGINIA! And let me remind you that the men and women in this state are serving FOR YOU oversees. They HAVE served and will CONTINUE to serve everytime needed. It amazes me that people can be so immature, as ADULTS, to continue with these ridiculous comments and insults. You want to see a "hick", go to ANY state, out in the middle of nowhere, and you'll find one. And incase anyone forgot, West Virginia was Virginia at one time...I do not see anyone ragging on Virginia. Someone explain that one to me. I would just like to conclude by saying that some of the nicest, m ost generous people you would EVER meet live in this beautiful state. Some are not as fortunate as others, but even still they would give their last slice of bread to someone in need. I have traveled all through the state and my father's family is from the middle of the state. I have seen it all, and yes, it may be different, but who the hell is in ANY position to joke and make fun of our people's ways?! And the whole incest thing? Come on people, seriously, do you not have anything better to do with your time?
The next time before you go to rag on WV, stop and make sure your own state's clean.
This is the problem with today's world: everyone is so judgemental and we judge a book by its cover before actually reading into it. I pray that one day people are as open-minded and warm and friendly as they once were.

Guess the washington post doesn't have the guts to print my opinion -- not surprising.

I simply compared the conduct of WV people with that of a certain pseudo celebrity who has done nothing of value except show her ignorance on a reality tv show and her lack of class on a homemade naughty video. I guess that was enough to get me censored.

The difference is that you can make fun of WV because they are a poor state overall. You can't make fun of rich people. Even if their behavior warrants it. Oh well, so much for the first amendment at the washington post. Not that I actually expected they cared about free speech -- but it would have been nice to be pleasantly surprised. Perhaps one day ...

V.P. Cheney must feel absolutely humiliated to be chastized and lectured by Sen. Byrd, an admitted former member of the Ku Klux Klan unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter. Apparently the title was a precursor of the Senator's career long lack of depth perception. Time has rendered him even more humorless.

Did anyone bother to read the offensive quote? Here it is:

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney quipped.

Cheney is saying his own family is incestuous. He insults his own family and himself. How is that offensive to Mountaineers? The journalists totally twisted a self-deprecating joke into an insult of West Virginians. Sadly the Mountaineers accepted the press corps' version hook, line, and sinker. Now that's the joke.

It just proves that West Virginians are all a bunch of Homo sapiens.

Some of the comments I am reading on here just shows the ignorance of those who are posting them. West Virginians cant read, PLEASE! I received a first rate education because the teachers in WV actually CARE about the students they teach. I moved to Maryland a few years back and talk about people who cant read or write, or drive for that matter. As far as incest, I lived in WV for the first twenty years of my life and never once have I ever met anyone that was a product of incest. As a matter of fact, most of my relatives work for the federal government in DC. Yes parts of WV are that close. There is good clean living there and good people. I wonder if any one of you have ever even been to WV! If you had been, you certainly wouldnt have posted your ignorant remarks. Judging people simply by the state where they live is almost as bad as judging another person by the color of their skin. Have some class. As for the Cheney remark, it is completely inappropriate and insensitive and a man of his status should have more respect.

After reading the comment here it is obvious that most of you have the IQ of a snail and that is being generous. The fact that the "Vice President" of the United States made the joke at all is patently offensive. But again, it just goes to show you what kind of people we have running this country. Did you ever think that either of them gave one dame bit about the American People? NO, their only concern is Money and Power. Those of you that join in and make further jokes do nothing more then prove your own ignorance and stupidity. Leave it to the Repugnants.

Dearest Dick:

In light of your recent comments made during a recent National Press Club speech, I personally find your remarks utterly disgusting and downright unacceptable. And you know what, Mr. Richard "DICK" Cheney? Contrary to popular belief, not all people from West Virginia are inbred, and many in our state would and could intelligently mediate my sentiments. Yes, I have heard all the jokes before, and over the years, have even partaken in slinging a few myself. I am from West Virginia, and sometimes one is forced to laugh at oneself for fear of crying. West Virginia, at times, leaves much to be desired, but nonetheless, it is the place I call home. BUT here exists ONE BIG difference: I am NOT the VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Would I expect any more of you? No, but that is besides the point. As I stated, you are in a high position of power, this fact which you obviously and blatantly continue to take as a joke, your comments being completely deplorable. Your attempt at humor was ill-advised, and the fact that you had a "spokeswoman" issue an "apology" exposes the obvious truth that you are an unworldly, vile coward. Do you not have the the time, or more accurately, the courage, to come out and PERSONALLY admit that your comments were inappropriate at best? I didn't think so. I do understand that there exist matters at hand much more important than the issue I address, but your continuing insensitive actions speak volumes towards your incompetence as a public official. In lock-step with your previous response to a question posed by an interviewer regarding the heartfelt view of a majority of the American people, in reference to our severe opposition to the continuing, seemingly endless war in Iraq (Cheney responded, "So?"), that of which exists solely as a business decision for which you continue to be handsomely rewarded monetarily, I further call for your impeachment on the grounds that you, sir, are obviously yourself the direct product of inbreeding. Comments like the aforementioned could only possibly erupt from a human being with such inept social skills as yourself. You make me SICK. If you were looking to further push the buttons of the citizens of American, to symbolically SPIT in the faces of West Virginians, and to further display your complete and unmitigated inadequacies as a Vice President, you have done so. And to think I was so close in surrendering my own personal efforts in the fight to make you held accountable for crimes conducted while in office. You, in one fail swoop, with one more distasteful, revolting, unsophisticated comment, have drummed up an anger in me I have not experienced since yesterday. In response to my outrage, I could imagine you would probably, strike that, most definitely would, respond to my disdain with another insensitive, taunting comment such as "Touched a nerve, eh?", or some other asinine commentary along these lines. And I would continue to not be surprised. You have demonstrated, particularly prevalent over the course of the last few years, that you have no regard toward others and their feelings. There is so much more I could say, concerning the senseless deaths of our honorable soldiers in Iraq, the state of the economy that your administration so gleefully praises as "stronger than ever", and the repugnant, vile stream of propaganda that continues to pour from the encrusted lips of yourself and your minions, but I will leave it at that. We all know how bad the situation is, and we are exhausted. With all this, sir, I respectfully wish upon you one more severe and painful heart attack, only this time, I hope it squeezes the last bit of life force from that fat, bloated head of yours, the life energies which I severely doubt you possessed in the first place. In your defense, I do believe that you do possess a soul, and Lucifer is about to reclaim what is his. Good riddance, DICK, and I hope you enjoy an eternal life in Hell. May a swarm of a billion locusts gnaw the last bits of fat from your stubby, minute fingers as you attempt to pen the lies you will call your legacy in a book deal surely made in Hell.

Sincerely yours,
