Pelosi Touts Texas Rep. Chet Edwards For Veep

OK, so now we have a pretty good idea of who House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would like to see in the No. 2 slot on the 2008 Democratic presidential ticket.

Texas Rep. Chet Edwards
Rep. Chet Edwards (D-Texas)

"I do think in the list of considerations there should be somebody from the House of Representatives," Pelosi told Newsweek.com's TamCam blog. Specifically, she said, "Chet Edwards is a person that many of us think would be a good person to be in the mix."

Edwards is a nine-term centrist Democrat from Texas who, though he never served in the armed forces, has a solid military affairs background as chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.

If you ask us, it sounds like the Texan is tore down excited by the idea of running for veep.

He released a statement Tuesday afternoon saying he is "humbled" that Pelosi "and others" (note that he said "and others") would suggest him as a vice presidential running mate for Obama. "Given that I have not met with the Obama campaign regarding the vice presidential nomination, I would not want to speculate on the names being considered," Edwards said.

The congressman said his "focus" remains on serving his district and passing the VA-military construction appropriations bill. And he included a short bio of his accomplishments in Congress, just in case anyone -- especially, say, a guy whose last name is Obama -- wanted to read about his qualifications.

His statement said the following: "Edwards is the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs. In his first year as Chairman of the House Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee in 2007, Congressman Edwards authored a historic increase of $11.8 billion in veterans' health care and benefits, the largest increase in veterans funding in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration (VA). Today, the Appropriations Committee unanimously passed the fiscal year 2009 bill, which increases VA spending by $ 2.9 billion above the President's request and $4.6 billion more than the historic fiscal year 2008 level."

Edwards wouldn't be the craziest pick for Obama. Though it would be a real challenge for him to attract too many folks in his district -- he represents a majority Republican district -- to vote for Obama. The most powerful of Edwards' many GOP constituents also happens to be the most powerful Republican in the country: George W. Bush, whose home town of Crawford lies in Edwards' district.

Are you kidding me?! I've never heard of this guy. What the hell is Pelosi smoking? she has got to go - we don't need estrogen in the congress. It's f'ed up now, imagine what it would be like if women took over.

It really doesn't matter who is in Veep slot. To help Obama get elected, Obama will have to keep his mouth shut. So far Obama has backtracked on earlier statmeents he has made and uttered ones that he would like to have back. As the old saying goes, "It is better to be thought a fool and remain silent than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt."

No no no the VP for the Obama must be someone who has no substance, lest he (she)
show Obama up.

How about a media star-----or maybe they could be chosen on american idol or something.

don't confuse the democratic ticket with anything of substance.

The people want cake!

give us cake !

we want cake!

hahaha now I could see the repubs vp being picked on American Idol. Why not? The "Straight Talk Express" derailed long ago and has meandered through everything but reality and American Idol. Hit up American Idol for a VP then a cold slap of we-lost reality in November.

One of the top contenders for the presidential nomination could be Chet Edwards, but there are excellent choices without choosing someone of so little fame. e.g., John Edwards or Hillary Clinton. The need to reverse the sick course of our government is great that the best vote getter would be the best choice.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 25, 2008 12:01 PM

Hopefully, Obama will discount anything that repugnant woman has to say. Pelosi is nothing more than a bought and paid for democrat who constantly carries water for Dubya and his corpse loving republicans.

Posted by: Johann | June 25, 2008 12:02 PM

If Nancy Pelosi is for it, it has to be bad for the Democratic Party. I've lived in her district as long as she's been in Congress; I should know.

Posted by: Alan in SF | June 25, 2008 12:03 PM

The Waco Dem Chet Edwards is telegenic, but virtually unknown outside the Lone Star State.

This is a huge political gamble for Pelosi--trying to put Texas' huge electoral college vote count in the Democratic column. Guess if Obama lassoed Texas, he wouldn't have to campaign as much or spend as much dinero in the smaller swing states such as Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado.

Pelosi gets wilder and wackier by the day.

Posted by: Loomis | June 25, 2008 12:04 PM

Pelosi is nothing but a criminal enabler for Bush and Co. She has violated her oath of office and her duty to the american people and the constitution by taking impeachment off the table. She is the last person anyone should listen to about anything to do with government. The good people of California could do their country a great service by sending her back to the private sector in the next election.

Posted by: Hank | June 25, 2008 12:07 PM

On a more substantive note, Edwards has voted the wrong way on virtually every important bill recently, including the FISA revision, the military commissions act, and the war funding bill. He certainly does fit Pelosi's strategy of endorsing the worst aspects of Bush's surveillance state.

Posted by: Alan in SF | June 25, 2008 12:07 PM

Pelosi wants Obama to choose ANYONE but Hillary. Nancy can't deal with the thought of a woman being in a higher position than her in the legislative branch, seeing as the V.P is also the President of the Senate. MEOW! Also Pelosi wants the Clintons out of power positions to make way for her to build her own power base on the Obama bandwagon.

Posted by: Tommy J. | June 25, 2008 12:09 PM

what can he bring to the ticket? Texas. forget that. some southern states? i seriously doubt that. no, Obama needs the Rust Belt heartland and the Southwest and possibly Florida. Obama needs to look elsewhere. say Richardson. possible Webb, but his affinity with the Confederacy is spooky. even Rendell.

When are we getting rid of Pelosi anyway? I cheered when she was chosen as House Speaker and she's done nothing but damage the Democratic Party. A very poor leader.

Posted by: Lynn E | June 25, 2008 12:11 PM

Nobody's ever heard of this guy. But that's not his biggest disqualification.

No, his biggest disqualification is that he was one of a MINORITY of House Democrats to vote in favor of attacking Iraq.

Even if Obama were to pick a Veep from the House, why would anyone pick a Veep from this discredited group, when a majority of them got Iraq right?

I'm not usually one of those who says do everything my way or you lose my vote, but I will NEVER vote for a ticket that has anyone on it who voted to invade Iraq. Never.

So Chet Edwards = me staying home in Nov.

Pelosi really doesn't get it, does she?

Chet Edwards voted for the war.

Oh Nancy you crackpot! What you should be more concerned about is holding on to your spot! If this election goes to the Republicans that Nancy has the biggest hand in it! Every step of the primary Nancy opened her mouth, things got stupid. I believe she has a deep hatred for the Clinton's, Bill push none of her garbage earmarks through. If Obama keeps messing in Nancy's BUSHES, then his ear is a bad ear.

Obama needs to truly UNITE the party and stop giving all this lip service. Best person for this job of VP was the person who gave him a run for his money. The person who has won the Popular Vote hands down, and the person who can fight when the going gets tough! Lately he has been back peddling on his issues and it scares me deeply that the Democratic Party has made a bad choice. And hearing Nancy say another Texan should be a part of any administration is super scary! Guess I will vote for either two good people Hillary Clinton or myself! I can see using web as the Secretary of State or head the Defense Department, but as VP too Green for me!

Nancy Pelosi Please shut your trap!!!! You might be the reason that Democrats jump ship and if the numbers drop like the Republican Party has lost than the Independent Party will be strong in numbers, but more confused than anything! Good or should we say the best VP for the job would be someone out of politics may be someone who truly understands the American people try "LOU DOBBS" then may be Obama might get my vote! Because if I know Lou he'd snatch off the table and send the Illegal Aliens home packing!

After Pelosi took impeachment off the table and decided to vote with the treasonous neo-cons on the FISA deal, she really has no crediblity in the Democratic Party. She should remove herself from the limelight and let true patriotic Americans make the decisions.

Just about anyone who is half well-known has a slate of accomplishments and years of experience superior to Obama, that he would probably make an obscure pick, to be on the safe side.

The great Obama cannot afford to be out-shone by his Veep.

Posted by: Krishna | June 25, 2008 12:53 PM

I am very bitter and angry that Nancy Pelosi did not suggest a transgender as Obama Barack's running mate. Pelosi is quite aware that the far-left members of the Democratic Party -- angry, bitter leftists like me who read firedoglake and are secure in our gender identity -- are the ones who will make the difference in this fall's election. The reality-based-community is certainly a force to be reckoned with these days.

I haven't heard any noises from the "true patriotic American" Obama on impeachment. And he has signaled that he will vote with "the treasonous neo-cons on the FISA deal". So they will make an excellent matching pair.

And Pelosi is a charter member of the "Kill Hill" brigade, so that should endear her to Obama that much more.

Jim Webb would be the logical and best choice for a variety of reasons Some reasons explored in detail on http://newpoliticosblogspot.com

Nancy Pelosi is usually more intelligent. I wonder where she came up with Chet Rather odd choice

Posted by: Shafqat Khan | June 25, 2008 1:05 PM

Texas going liberal? NOT! Pelosi is still discrediting herself, like when she trucked off to Syria. What a joke!

If Obama is smart he would pick the calm Sam Nunn of Georgia, a former Chairman of the Armed Services Committee in the Senate and who has devoted himself to Nuclear Non-Proliferation concerns since then. This would represent a new potential alignment toward the South and possibly win Georgia to boot.

Jim Webb is also a good pick and may help win Virginia. Stop slandering him - all you who say he is pro-Confederacy; Jim Webb is Pro-American - he rightly loves the historic figures who had integrity in his own beloved Virginia. He has a historian's touch. But he is one of the most honest politicians around, and like Sam Nunn, he would really add alot to Obama. Thank God the Webb types are now running as Democrats.

If Obama picked Chuck Hagel, McCain could fold up his tent and go home because the election would be all over. Seriously.

Last but not least, Biden, Richardson, Sibelius and Feinstein, the Democrats have oodles of talent out there and are the most ready to govern after the bloody Neocons almost destroyed America and the world.

Posted by: Maj Worthington | June 25, 2008 1:08 PM

Nope, too boring. Picking this empty suit would dilute the excitement of Obama's ticket. While it might be a "safe" choice and be appealing to centrists, Obama's campaign is passionate and about making changes. We need a VP with passion equal to Obama's- that means no more politically expedient and safe choices and more choices that will mobilize people.

Not saying he should necessarily be the veep, just that he's somebody to keep in mind.

Posted by: Gil3 | June 25, 2008 3:28 PM

I admit I wouldn't have thought to put his name in, but why the hell not? He's got the conservative bona fides and has beaten Republicans in a heavily Republican district (he's one of those guys that redistricting was supposed to get rid of... but in his case it didn't).

Edwards would not help Obama carry Texas... let's not think I'm suggesting that. But as a supporter of the war and someone who has been on opposite sides of issues from Obama often, it would certainly show the the swing voters that Obama's not afraid to involve people with vastly different viewpoints... something Bush has run away from and something McCain seems to have forgotten how to do.

Plus having Edwards on the ticket might actually bring a handful of endorsements from credible (read not known partisan) military leaders.

Obama's not looking for ways to win the Dems over... he's done that. Now he needs to bring the independents and some disillusioned GOPers into the fold.

Who the hell would listen to Nancy Pelosi. The woman is an idiot and a disgrace. I'm actually ashamed for women when she is set up as an example.. For those of you who are supporting Edwards, forget it... He couldn't help Kerry a single bit. As for Jim Webb, yes, he would have been credible a few weeks ago, but the GOP is going to jump all over him. As for Wexler, he might get the Jewish vote, but that's about it. He has already shown his true colors when he deserted Clinton in favor of Obama.

I find that offensive. I am from Texas. Stop generalizing. You are insinuating that Texas is to blame for all of the country's problems, which is not true. I am Hispanic, I love my state, even if I do not always agree with the ideas supported by our politicians. I accept that G.W. Bush has made a lot of mistakes, but you can NOT say that this is because he is a texan. Texas is a beautiful state.. the only state to have been a country of its own.. which is why it is the only state that can have its state flag at the same level as the U.S. flag. We have great history and wonderful people.

We should be a united nation, not one divided by stereotypes and stupid ideas. We are all Americans. Stop being so selfish and dumb, Gil3.

Oh great, then Chet Edwards can spend the summer explaining to Republicans why he was "for the war before he was against it."

Webb's good, but the best choice IMO is Ted Strickland. Strong Hillary supporter; centrist credentials; popular governor of Ohio, the ultimate swing prize; and as a Congressman in 2002, he voted - unlike Chet Edwards - against the invasion of Iraq.

I think the state of texas has a lot to answer for. Molly Ivins and LBJ are both dead. We have had to suffer with this governor of the state (who presided over legislative meetings as governor how often - once every two years?) the most executions of any state - I mean, just looking at bush sidling up to the podium, "I'm the decider," gack! I am sorry Texas but I think we can blame you. Have you ever listened to Senator Patrick Leahy, who Dick Cheney said "go F-- yourself! on the senate floor...) Leahy is distinguished and generally terrific. To think Cheney said that to him, it's incredible. The yahoos have taken over the world, with this administration. Yes, I think blaming texas quite appropriate.

Aside from that, maybe because Pelosi is blinking 100 times a second, she can no longer see past her own eyelashes.

Just pick Hilary, for god's sake! She's beautiful, intelligent, and ARTICULATE, thank goodness. SAVE US FROM TEXAS! (and from Nancy Pelosi. She needs a good nickname, like turdblossom. Who has any ideas for nicknames for Pelosi...?)

Chet Edwards has been an outstanding State Senator and Congreeman. He is smart, hardworking, and is well respected on both sides of the aisle. Whether he would be the best possible choice for VP is a different question, but he deserves respect for the job he has done representing his district, which is immediately south of Dallas.

Chet Edwards is a smart hard working congressman who has worked tirelessly for veterans and the people of his district for 9 terms. He is nothing like George Bush in any shape form or fashion. By the way, I never thought of George Bush as a real Texan anyway. They were only here for the oil business. Chet Edwards may not be known well outside of his district by most people, but I'm betting that one of these days people will know who he is. He would make a great Vice President or President for that matter, but we would not want to give him up here in Texas.

Please take Chet Edwards - you can have him and btw when he runs his campaign here in his district, you can't tell he's a Democrat - what does that tell you about him. And, wasn't Jim Webb a Republican before becoming a Dem. You can have him too - with his peverted novels he fits in with the liberal lack of morals. I just moved to Baltimore from Edwards district in Texas. Edwards has won in a very predominately Republican district 9 times: he is a moderate, cares strongly about veterans, NOT war, and is a very decent man. He may not be in the national spotlight yet but he would be a solid choice for a vice president. Give him a chance and stop judging him by Pelosi's character.

I trhink he should go the opposite direction with someone like Russ Feingold who is no stranger to foreign policy or economic issues He is the only senator to have voted against the PATRIOT ACT and the Iraq war. The remarks lately by Obamma and his campaign may be a clue...though Feingold has not hesitated to criticize(rightly) Obamma lately Wisconsin by my estimates is not really a swing state except in a borderline sot of way and thus he could be consistant in saying he wants someone who will feel free to dissagree with him when appropriate and is not looking to win a state with his selection. he said he wants someone big on not jusrt foreign but economic issues. Russ fits the bill and what an irony to have fighting at his ide the coauthor of a bipartisan bill authored by M

whats with all the Texan bashing? Just because some have been less than impressive does not mean everyone in the state is an idiot. Some noteable Texas politicians - Sam Houston, Oveta Culp Hobby, Lloyd Bentsen, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Dwight Eisenhower, Barbara Jordan, George Bush (senior). Don't hate the state, hate the idiots!

Oh no. Pelosi has already picked the Democratic nominee for President now she wants to shove the VP down our throats as well. Back off lady and take care of the House of Representatives. Get to work. That's what you are there for. Not handpicking the candidates, micromanaging the campaign and doing press conferences about sexism.

First off, lay off Texas, everybody. As a native, life-long Californian, I have a lot of respect for any state that can produce the likes of Jim Hightower, Molly Ivins, Bill Moyers, Barbara Jordan, etc., etc. Blaming Texans for Bush's foul-ups is like blaming Californians for all of Reagan's blunders -- patently unfair.

Secondly, while I certainly have my issues with Nancy Pelosi, the idea that Cindy Sheehan would be a worthy replacement is ludicrous. With all due respect to the horrible loss Cindy has endured, I'm afraid she's become a little too fond of all the attention she gets, and it has affected her judgment, and her credibility. Using Cindy as a vehicle for trying to damage a Dem Speaker of the House, in a year where Dems should be doing everything possible to improve their gains in the House, is the kind of circular-firing-squad move the Dems are all too famous for.

Finally, as regards Rep. Edwards himself, he's certainly worth a look, but when was the last time a Representative was elected directly to the Vice-Presidency? Jerry Ford was appointed, so he doesn't count. You have to go back all the way to John Nance Garner, FDR's first Veep, who was the freakin' Speaker before his elevation in 1932.

No, if you're looking for the last guy to jump from the House to the Vice-Presidency, try James Sherman, who was elected William Taft's Veep in 1908 -- a hundred years ago!

That is not a promising historical trend for electing Veeps. Whatever Edward's qualities, he and the party would be better off if he stayed in Texas, and held down that seat.

BTW, all you right-wing fantasists who apparently live to slander Obama in particular, and liberals in general, while making no cogent, logical arguments to back up your blather, there is a place for you -- but it's not here.

Your fellow Flat-Earthers at Free Republic have a special padded playpen awaiting your return to where you belong. There, you can argue over which of you needs the stronger meds, while the rest of us can stay here, and have the grown-up conversations.

yes, lets have a lets blame texas column. Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Bush senior..I can't speak with weak-kneed horror that these would be on anybody's list for anything other than chief jackasses. How about Janis Joplin. There you go.

One thing I always admire about Texas is the abilitly to maintain the ironic humourous tone. NOT!! hee hee hee.C'mon, you freaking republicans, I DARE you to make a joke about TEXAS! Bush is the freaking stupidest president we have EVER had. Someone has to take the blame for this. Are you all glad you can keep your stupid guns, now! Do you realize the DIFFERENCE between gun violence in europe where guns are regulated, and here? Mexico smuggles gun INTO the country FROM the USof A, mostly from TEXAS!! Actually I don't know what state they smuggle guns from.

And thanks for letting Bush build a stupid fence in your backyards, so the few remaining jaguars in the world are suddenly cut off from their habitat. Morons!

Rep. Edwards from Texas, is all wrong. First and foremost is the fact he is not a Democrat. His district is mostly GOP including SRUB's home of Crawford. We don't need a Liberal, we don't need a moderate, we don't need a conservative Democrat!
What we need is a true Blue Democrat who believes in the principles of the Democratic Party.
Finally, when was the last Congressman elected,....an the operative word here is elected....... to the Executive Branch???
NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!! unless you go back to John Adams, Thomas Jefferson period of our history and you count the Continental Congress.
As far as Pelosi is concerned, she is trying to find a way to be relevant, poor thing never understood she was a pawn by the DNC to win women voters and to view the Party as historic, I'm afraid she never understood she was being used in that matter.
Happy Days may never come again.

I hope and pray that Obama does not take any advice from Pelosi. She has betrayed all of us who voted in 2006 for change. She has not made a difference and is a disgrace for women in leadership position. It is because of women like Pelosi that women are having a hard time convincing people they should be in leadership. She just goes along as long as it keeps her as the leader of the house. Let us hope the fruit cakes in her district drink some wine and come to there senses and vote for Cindy Sheehan.

Pelosi, shut up and do your job. California voters, did you hear what Pelosi said? She should be impeached by Democratic Party, Dean is stupid enough for the Party, Pelosi is nothing but a big mouth woman

Yuri Lipi, you're an idiot.

Webb is a total mysogynist...Biden is not "change"...Clinton is, well, Clinton...Edwards is not helpful in any way...Wesley Clark is a barely a Democrat.

The pick should either be Sherrod Brown (look him up...his credentials and sincerity are excellent) or it should be Kathleen Sebelius. I'd be extremely excited by both.

Posted by: Stephen C. | June 27, 2008 3:53 PM

Stephen C. Who is Sherrod Brown? Who is Kathleen Sebelius?
If you think so highly of them as to endorse them with your name, you should be giving their Bio's to us, rather than us looking them up.

I'm courious how many people on this forum think the DNC and its Rules governing its Primary is broken?

Caucus, is blantly unfair to its potential voters, it seems to be borderline illegal because not everyone can participate, due to e.g. say shift workers.
In some states you can vote twice in them such as Texas.
Other states you can even cross over to vote in the Democratic Primary, if you follow the rules to allow properly.
How can a candidate lose the state but obtain almost as many delegates as the winner.
Its even possible to lose yet get all the delegates.
Winner should take all!
Finally, What difference is it...What state votes earlier than another state?
Ego's maybe? Policitcal favors maybe?
Whatever, Why not just have one day where all states hold the primary.
let's have an exchange on this
We may even be able to change the DNC!

Pelosi needs to back off, we rejected Hillary and we rejected her. Go home and be a grandma and stop ruining politics with your bad advice and do nothing congress.

Nonsense-Nancy speaks....again.
Take her microphone away, paleeeeeeease.

Why not the original notion of the Dream-ticket: Obama/Clinton?

I think they'd work well together and besides, getting ahold of Bill on the phone would't be a problem.

Obama & Clinton
