Champions' Cup Begins

Okay, so maybe it's cold and windy and icy and slushy and snowy here in the mid-Atlantic today, but down in Trinidad, it's in the mid-80s with a chance of thunderstorm. Why do we care? Because the Champions' Cup, that international tournament involving D.C. United, actually got under way last night in the Caribbean -- and there was a huge surprise.

W Connection upset Chivas of Guadalajara, 2-1, on two late goals after Dubya's star goalkeeper was sent off with a red card in the first half. Now the Dubs must go to Mexico in two weeks and get a tie (Um, I don't like their chances). The winner of the series gets DCU or Olimpia in the semifinals.

Here's the full match report from the Dub perspective...

The weather is also decent in Bradenton -- 73 and partly cloudy -- where United is playing New York in a preseason matchup. I'll pass along the details sometime after the noon hour.

I was up late last night to watch the game on FSC but didn't see it on at 11pm est like it was posted. Oh well, I'm glad to see that United may not have to face Chivas after all!?!? Looking forward to the match next Wed.

Boy, Morales, Medina and Bravo can't beat anybody, can they?

forget Euro-style names like Real Salt Lake, Colorado Arsenal, etc... what we need are some Trinidad and Tobago-style names. Western Connection, Defence Force, and the incomparable Joe Public!

by the way, I love the Trinidad and Tobago official song from World Cup 2006. Soca Warriors our world cup team!

Speaking of Euro-style names, I think we need a Racing soccer club. How about Racing Cleveland? Or Seattle Wednesday?

Yes!!! Love it...

Seattle Wednesday??? Ugh...whenever my hometown obtians an MLS franchise, I hope they choose a more appropriate name, such as "Sporting Seattle", but it'll probably be something strange...like being named after a character in Moby Dick: Starbucks FC!
