Stokes Heading Out
Defender David Stokes's attempt to earn his way back onto United's roster is over.
Stokes, whose contract was not renewed following the 2006 season, will complete his tryout Sunday and won't be offered a new deal, team officials confirmed Saturday.
He is expected to pursue minor league opportunities. His agent, Craig Sharon, did not return a phone message. Stokes spent part of the offseason training with European clubs before joining United on an extended tryout.
Stokes, a Northern Virginia native who was the fifth overall pick in the 2003 draft from North Carolina, played in 24 regular season games and made seven starts in four seasons.

I like to think of my self as a great David Stokes supporter. I am always cheering for him when he gets placed in the game and everyone around me always says why do you like this guy, hes horrible. I just felt like he had the talent but never was comfortable on the field. I wish him the best of luck elsewhere, hopefully he will come back to the Red and Black soon and hush everyone up

Has all the tools - just can't put them all together.

It seems the Stokes' Army has been dealt its final setback.

Another failure for a DC draft pick.

Does DCU retain the MLS rights to David Stokes should he blossom on the fields of the USL?

What does United do if Boswell or Namoff or even Erpen rip up a knee in minute three against Olimpia?
They have NO depth anywhere, but especially backline.
And don't say John Wilson.

Sad to see, very talented guy who just never quite had the confidence and comfort it took to make it here. A fresh start is best for him....hope he comes back and haunts DC many, many times.

I think the USL will be a good place for Stokes. He's young and will have plenty of time to prove himself. Maybe Richmond will pick him up?

I just don't see the reserve team doing much this season now that they released Stokes. A key part to their 2005 title team. WHAT is KPayne thinking?

Well, I wish him the best in his career, but I'm grateful it won't be in the black and red.
