Notes From RFK
UPDATED at 2:45 pm -- see BELOW
Beautiful sunny day here at the RFK training grounds. A few early items to pass along:
-- Brazilian forward Welton Silva was not offered a contract and has departed. No new trialists in attendance.
-- Rod Dyachenko, who has a slight knee knock, is jogging on the side while the rest of the field players compete in a half-field scrimmage of sorts.
-- Troy Perkins, strained quad, is participating in regular goalkeeping drills. Still too early to say whether he'll be available for Thursday's Chivas match, but this is certainly a positive sign.
-- A Harrisburg, Pa., TV station is here for a feature on Ben Olsen.
-- Just before workouts began, three trucks from WWE pro wrestling passed by on Oklahhoma Avenue for tonight's "show" at Verizon Center. Why is this important? Because Bobby Boswell received tickets as a birthday present and will be in attendance. Apparently he's got REALLY good seats. (His 24th birthday is Thursday). He promises to chronicle his experience at his new Web site, www.bobbyboswell.com, starting next week. Christian Gomez is also taking in the rasslin' with his kids. (Poor kids).
More updates later...
*Troy Perkins participated in a competitive situation for the first time since getting injured and looked sharp. From all indications, he will play Thursday.
Said trainer Brian Goodstein: "He's progressed every day. Physcially, he should be ready."
Coach Tom Soehn: "We want him to ease into it. When you play in a competitive environment, your intensity picks up, so he made it through it today, which is important. Obviously he's going to be a key factor."
Everyone agrees that the biggest issue at this point is Perkins's ability -- or inability -- to kick the ball.
Perkins: "Kicking the ball is still up in the air right now, but everything else is fine -- sprinting and moving -- it's just the motion of hitting the ball that is what we're still waiting on. We've still got three days to let it fully mend and hopefully we'll get there."
Perkins might have to call on defenders to take goal kicks and he said he's been working on distribution with his hands. He's also been working on using his left foot. "If I have time to set the ball down, I can hit it with my left. I've been working on it all week. Worse comes to worse, sometimes that is what you've got to do. I've hit some balls with my left the last week or two. It was a little awkward, but I've worked on it the last couple years, so it's getting better."
Other observations:
*Boswell's assertiveness, intensity, vocal leadership and mean streak -- yes, mean streak -- stood out today. Reminded me a bit of Ryan Nelsen.
*I had a nice chat with Kasali Yinka Casal and am planning to write a feature on him in the next couple weeks. He's got a fascinating background.
*No Fred sightings yet, but I am hearing that the visa process has progressed nicely and, once he visits a consulate in Brazil or elsewhere, he should be set to join United. Maybe another week or so. We'll see.
*Soehn on Welton Silva: "I really liked the person. I thought he came and fit in. Unfortunately, the type of player we're looking for as a complement, he just didn't have what we needed. We wish him well. He's a good guy."

Lucha Libre!! Gomito "El Chupacabra" vs Bofo el Bozo payaso. Should be a good one.

Please tell me "really good seats" doesn't translate to "making a special appearance in the ring a la Kevin Federline".

Hey, what ever gets you pumped up for Chivas. We need this win.

People around the world are dying to know...Fred...when?
Posted by: London Dan | March 12, 2007 12:33 PM
Is it me, or does this Boswell kid like himself a little too much? He really ought to back up that ego on the field before he tauts it elsewhere.

MLS,Miami,Bundesliga...
What gives?
Please & Thank you!

I hope United "lays the smack down" on Chivas Thursday.
I hear that Trump will be there tonight for wrestling for some craziness they are doing. Maybe Boswell and Gomez can sweet talk him into being our t-shirt sponser.
Posted by: Kenny | March 12, 2007 12:54 PM
But Kenny, wouldn't that be some sort of copyright infringement on the Buffalo Sabres' new logo?
Posted by: Kim | March 12, 2007 12:57 PM
Yep, Donald Trump will be at WWE Raw tonight, for a contract signing.
Basically, here's how it will work. At Wrestlemania 23 in a few weeks, there will be a match between Donald Trump's chosen wrestler and Vince McMahon's chosen wrestler. The manager of the losing wrestler gets his head shaved.
Posted by: Mike | March 12, 2007 1:10 PM
Kim, forgive me, but that joke/comment went well over my head. Hockey isnt my strong suit.
And thats great about someone shaving someones head. Wrasslin stops at nothing for viewers.

I feel my IQ slipping by a healthy 30 points with this much talk about rasslin'. In a few minutes, I may even be dumb enough to work in the RSL front office...

To wrestling fans.. losing 30 IQ points takes out all of their IQ points in one quick swipe.

Good to hear Troy is on the mend. Also good to hear Boswell is taking command on the back line. We're going to need some nastiness on Thursday.
Steve, have they announced the refs for this game yet?
Posted by: Chico | March 12, 2007 2:20 PM
here's another way Bobby Boswell could remind us all of Ryan Nelsen: leaving United after a very successful season to move to England

Dang it! Thursday night is the night we want cold weather. With any luck, it'll rain.

Listening to Goff right now in my office in DC via Melbourne, AU!
Posted by: DE | March 12, 2007 2:51 PM
This is PROFESSIONAL wrestling, not the amateur stuff.
Hope Bozilla can sneak into the ring as a guest referee or something. I wonder what's his favorite move. The pedigree, mandible claw, kamikaze clothesline, spin-a-roonie, and Scorpion Death Drop have nothing on the Dreaded Trojan Left Footed Goal Kick.
Posted by: garbaggio | March 12, 2007 2:51 PM
I'm not sure, but I would hope that Bozilla's favorite move involved Mr. Socko.
Posted by: D | March 12, 2007 2:55 PM
Steve - great job on Sport 927! I can't believe that Australians are so skeptical about your report. You'd think that at some point the Melbourne Victory would have to concede that Fred is indeed moving on and announce as such...
I also find it funny that, given the relative infancy of the A League, many Aussies consider MLS to be a novelty league. You think it has something to do with the disdain that the bulk of American sportswriters, and many sports fans as well, harbor for soccer?
Posted by: DE | March 12, 2007 2:58 PM
DE, can you summarize what Goff said today? I didnt get to hear it.
Posted by: Kenny | March 12, 2007 3:04 PM
Poor Ryan Nelsen, being compard to Boswell is a slap.
Posted by: ron | March 12, 2007 3:05 PM
Sounds like those guys don't even read their hometown paper if they are skeptical about Fred leaving. The (Melbourne) Age has another story today quoting MV officials as conceding that Fred is as good as gone but they might try to get some cash for the transfer as they apparently own his contract until June 30. They may want something like 2 months worth of his salary. I can't imagine that would be an impediment. They also confirmed that Soccer Australia (or whatever they are calling it these days) has received the international transfer request.

Bozza is just another in a long line of great anchoring centerbacks DC produced:
Eddie Pope
Ryan Nelsen
Bozza.
I'd say Bozza is at the level or higher that nelsen was at his second year with us.

Good work, Goff.
Anybody else pleased that Soehn is not just taking guys because he needs the space? I mean the hardest pick for a good manager to make is to pass on those 'alomst but not quites'.
Posted by: DCAustinite | March 12, 2007 3:12 PM
Please tell me some 300-pound, muscle-headed ape isn't going to get himself literally thrown out of the ring -- and right into Boswell's lap. That could put a damper on birthday night.
And PLEASE confirm Ben Olsen isn't the chaperone...

I heard a rumor that Chivas was not planning on bringing or playing some of their top players Thursday vs DCU. Has anybody checked the Mexican newspapers or know anything more about this?
Posted by: sbgoldman | March 12, 2007 3:35 PM
I just heard that DCU has traded for Ronaldinho. Go team!!!!!!

You forgot Llamosa. I still think he is the best defender we have had. No one since has had a read on the game like he used to (which is what made up for him not being the fleetest of foot).

Steve- when trialists like Fearrington and Welton don't catch on at DCU, are there other MLS teams trying to snatch them up?

Steven, what's this on MLSnet's front page about an MLS/Bundesliga announcement in Miami tomorrow?

Posted by: gnat | March 12, 2007 4:28 PM
Have not heard anything about other MLS interest in Welton Silva or Fearrington. Welton is a good player, just didn't fill DCU's needs. Fearrington, from what I've heard, had a poor week in Florida.
Don't know anything about the MLS-Bundesliga announcement. I'm not holding my breath either.

Crap penalty call. 4 players going for the ball. One Swede and two yanks fall.
Crap yellow to Solo.
Why not card the shooter for adjusting the ball on the spot - twice.

Sorry if the video link didn't work. That Swedish PK. I didn't get it. The entire scene was strange. All those women falling around in the box...

My guess is that the Bundesliga announcement is another friendly, unless Columbus is changing their name to Ohio Mu"chengladbach.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 12, 2007 5:01 PM
My German is rusty, but it sounds like the US advances to the final against Denmark, which lost to Germany but won their group. If I'm correct, then we just need to hit loopy balls to the Danish 'keeper.
What happens to group C?
Posted by: I-270 Exit 1 | March 12, 2007 5:09 PM
is there any more elaboration on the "Welton Silva did not fit United's needs" assessment? As far as I can tell, we have 3 to 4 forwards (Moreno, Emilio, Walker, Fred). I guess perhaps his salary demands were too high for us to take him up as a back-up striker?
Posted by: Diego R. | March 12, 2007 10:55 PM
Who cares about the Women's Nats? And why do updates on their Algarve Cup game belong on Goff's blog? IMO, women's soccer takes up way too much soccer bandwidth in this country.
Posted by: Monroe (SF) | March 12, 2007 11:06 PM
It's called the Soccer Insider. Not the MLS Insider. Not the USA Men's Insider.
Posted by: Goff | March 13, 2007 8:05 AM
I appreciate the WNT updates . . . I take exception to the Monroe Doctrine above.
Posted by: gringo | March 13, 2007 11:23 AM
Also, it is Goff's blog. If you don't want to read about something he writes, go to another page. That is a simple, effective way to deal with such situations.
