Uniformity

D.C. United is on the way to Guadalajara.
The USA national team is in Tampa.
I'm in Dallas for women's basketball. (stop laughing...now!)

Sooooo, whatcha think of Toronto and L.A.'s new sponsored jerseys?

At the moment, four of 13 clubs have shirt sponsors: New York (Red Bull energy drink), Real Salt Lake (XanGo energy drink), Los Angeles (Herbalife health supplements) and Toronto (BMO banking).

I'm taking suggestions for the rest of the league. Have fun with it! (For New England, a smiling photo of Sunil Gulati in his USSF blazer, for instance)

Is LAG still rebranding? Maybe its kits, uh, jerseys, with the herb logo will look better with the dark blue that King Alexi suggested. The TFC unis look good; will its play match? Goff, you report the heck out of them ladies, ya hear!

I'm laughing just a bit at LAG. Very powerful jersey. *Snicker*

I would love to see DCU sponsored by a big local company, and even a company that could boost the appeal of soccer. I think BET would be an awesome sponsor. The sport of the world should appeal to more than middle class white guys, hispanics, and kids. It would raise awareness in the African American community of DCU and soccer in general. Then maybe in 15 years we could have another heroic movie where a motley group of lovable poor kids gets a team together that goes undefeated and secures a heartwarming come from behind victory over the spoiled suburban kids team. Think "Bad News United", or "Real Bad News."

Any word on training matches lined up in Guadalajara against the local sides, e.g.,
Atlas, Tecos, Tapatio ?

Posted by: golazo | March 24, 2007 12:01 PM

So Toronto has a Montreal sponsor. Does that make them Pepsi's? Good deal eh?

For DCU, I think El Pollo Loco is the best bet. We could even change our mascot. A crazy chicken and a Screaming Eagle are not all that different!

Posted by: madbelgian | March 24, 2007 12:03 PM

United will scrimmage against Tecos on Wednesday.

SG, Saying stop laughing about covering women's hoops is uncalled for. I am a season ticket holder and plenty of people laugh at me for paying money to watch MLS or following the MLS. We should not have to apologize for what sports we follow or get paid to cover. The MLS and women's sports have at least one thing in common... When I cannot go to a game I cannot even give the tickets away.

Posted by: The Kettle | March 24, 2007 12:21 PM

I like the three horizontal stripes on DCU's jersey...I think they should keep those! However, Sierra Mist on the back??? I know that they're a league sponsor, but please, Harley-Davidson would be much more suitable for the Black and Red;) Toronto's kits look very classy! In regards to LA...I always thought that they'd end up choosing 'Gold 'n' Soft' margarine as a sponsor. Herbalife should do a good job of stoking the flames in the local derby. The current kit is an eyesore though. Hopefully, they'll have a new design and colors before the Royal Family arrives.

"Saying stop laughing about covering women's hoops is uncalled for."

It...was...a...joke.

My point is that some of y'all might take pleasure in me being stuck in Dallas and not in Mexico or Florida.

The Crew should be sponsored by Hoover, due to the coninuous sucking sound coming from central Ohio.

The Fire ought to be sponsored by an insurance company (State Farm maybe).

The Rapids should be sponsored by Coors if only to set up the beer/soccer rivalry between Colorado and the new St. Louis Francise...

The new St. Louis team *must* be sponsored by Budweiser, whose new stadium will be called affectionately, "the Keg".

(Obviously, I was disappointed that Toronto couldn't link up with Molson, creating a beer trifecta--maybe the Revs can get in with Sam Adams).

Great, now I just offended everyone in Dallas. (sigh)

:-0

Posted by: Goff | March 24, 2007 12:41 PM

NE sponsored by Kraft Macaroni and Cheese

Posted by: none | March 24, 2007 12:53 PM

LAG kits look like ass - but I thought that before the quack products logo. Toronto looks great - like the new kits - better than Houston, better than RSL, better than Colorado - I do like the hoops in Dallas though.

Posted by: Hoser | March 24, 2007 1:17 PM

Steven, Everyone knows that Dallas sucks, who cares if you offend them?

Posted by: Who cares about Dallas? | March 24, 2007 1:21 PM

The chicas in dallas are just as hot as in florida n guadalajara. Ur fine goff! (no I'm not refering to the women basketball players)

Posted by: matt y | March 24, 2007 1:30 PM

Is that a pot leaf on the galaxy jersey? Good to see that lalas is really putting his mark on the team!

Posted by: matt y | March 24, 2007 1:35 PM

Any one of Verizon, Comcast, XM Radio, BET, or Jack Daniels would be good.

Posted by: Kinney | March 24, 2007 3:14 PM

Hey Steven,

Didn't you say that the Citibank deal fell through because of a potential conflict with Chase a league sponsor? If that is the case why was TFC allowed Bank of Montreal? They have branches in the USA so it can't be a territorial issue.

As for DC, our shirt should be United Airlines. Nothing else :)

Posted by: BlogBall | March 24, 2007 3:56 PM

My conspiracy theory was that MAYBE there was a Citibank-Chase-MLS conflict of interest, that's all.

Canadian teams can do what they want, I guess.
:-)

Plenty of teams pull off the sash and sponsor combo on the jerseys quite well, evidently LA didnt bother to have a gander at the River Plate or Dynamo Kiev jerseys before slappin' that bumper sticker on the front of the jersey. To their credit, I do recall the Xango on the RSL jersey looking bumper sticker-like in the first few pictures. Given the new jersey color rumors and the fact that its probably just their first draft at combining the jersey with sponsor (for media purposes), there is hope this ugly LA jersey won't see the pitch.

Laughing at Goff for being in Dallas covering women's basketball is completely called for...as was Goff's comment. Women's basketball is pathetic and, if it wasn't being shoved down our throats by ESPN...it'd be completely irrelevant.

Posted by: DE | March 24, 2007 4:46 PM

Oh, and the TFC kits look great...as pretty much everything else associated with TFC has been this off season (except the artificial turf).

The LAG shirts look awful - as if someone slapped a bumper sticker on the front. I bet they'll be making some adjustments to make it look better.

Posted by: DE | March 24, 2007 4:48 PM

Nothing other than Kokosing Construction or Caterpillar makes sense for Columbus. Could see United taking a page from Barca and "promoting" United Way rather than pushing for a sponsor at the moment.

As for Dallas, with UNC facing GW you should have a quick trip home.....leaving time to cover the possible Schelotto news. Keep up the good work SG.

Posted by: Crewcat | March 24, 2007 5:25 PM

I feel your pain Goff... I just finished reffing our girl's 7v7 tournament. The most unexciting soccer I've ever witnessed. Speed, hustle, and tactics simply aren't factors in Women's College soccer. It's all dumb luck and herd ball.

Posted by: AlecW81 | March 24, 2007 5:39 PM

The herbalife leaf kinda looks like the old adidas trefoil (a pot leaf has 5 fronds). Other than that, it's ugly. I mean, the diagonal line was ugly to start with, but breaking it up with the bumper sticker (as people have already written) lacks any sense of aesthetics.

My condolences on having to be in Dallas and not cover soccer.

Do you have any insight into the Ecuadorian lineup? Are they bringing its A, B or C squad? (Same for Guatemala.)

Posted by: 12th man | March 24, 2007 7:56 PM

Ecuador brought, I believe, 11 World Cup players. Not sure what Guatemala is bringing.

By the way, today in Dallas, the public was invited to watch the basketball practice sessions at Reunion Arena. No charge. I only saw the Georgia workouts, but I counted 13 fans there. I am not kidding -- 13.

Posted by: Goff | March 24, 2007 8:06 PM

And I bet all thirteen were either scouts or reporters. Anyone else had to be thinking their lives to be pathetic that they didn't have something better to do.

Posted by: 13 unlucky few | March 24, 2007 8:11 PM

That would mean that not even the players' families could be bothered to come out for more than the actual game. Sad.

Posted by: bbarrie | March 24, 2007 8:27 PM

Uniform.
Field.
Game.
All right, I feel better now.
Hanging up the boots and heading back to the telly.

Posted by: gringo | March 24, 2007 8:41 PM

There has got to be more than 13 lesbians in dallas. Now if the womens nat soccer team was practicing I'd be there. Any of u seen leslie O up close? Damn

Posted by: matt y | March 25, 2007 1:30 AM

Toronto -- nice looking
Galaxy -- Awful looking

Posted by: Steve | March 25, 2007 7:53 AM

FC Toronto has been doing everything right with both their front office and team and i have no doubt they will be a team to wreckon with. LAG on the other hand makes horrible picks for players and for coming from the city of celebrities and expensive fashions their colors and sponsor are horrendous. Herbalife? seriously? it's a joke.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 25, 2007 10:54 AM

Speaking of funky sponsorships, how about the Houston Dynamo and Houston Baptist Church deal?
